EMAIL A Personal Testimony For The Piedmont Shopper “You don’t ever have to worry about anyone ceasing to read the Piedmont Shopper. My uncle, Henry D. Hopkins, is 87 years old & he goes somewhere to get a stack of them each week. He delivers them to the nursing home, and to his friends in his neighborhood. He makes sure everyone gets a copy every week! He and his wife Shirley love to share it and laugh at the jokes and stories. That paper is the heartbeat for a lot of people! My daughter, Ruby, sells Scentsy and she has used your paper for many occasions. She knows that is the one paper that everyone reads! Our church, Central Boulevard Church of God, just used your paper for our Vendor Spring Fling on 4/11/15, and I am sure half or more of the people came because of the Shopper!” -Deborah Severt

Price Is Not Right ---

Believe it or not, most reporters do not like confrontation. Be it a city beat reporter, restaurant critic or sports writer, most of the time reporters just want to do their job and go home just like everyone else. Yes, there are people who lay in wait for the “big storyâ€? that will make their career, and there are times when the “newsâ€? tramples over peoples lives and leaves only smoldering remains as the news crews move on to the next story. Most of the time, however, the complaints you hear about “the mediaâ€? are from people who are just frustrated that they can’t control or manipulate the media. Reporters did not go to school to learn, say, the engineering that goes into the building of a dam. But they are trained to ask questions about it, and with experience they know when they’re not getting straight answers. Sometimes reporters are asked if they can go ÂłR̆ WKH UHFRUG ´ 7KLV D gentleman’s agreement. Since most reporters will go to jail rather than give up a source, this is taken very serious. Other times the reporter gets D ZDJJLQJ LQGH[ ÂżQJHU attached to a red-faced person saying, “Don’t go putting this in your paper now!â€? which, of course, signals to the reporter that he or she will have a story for the paper. And then there’s professional sports. Grown men, making millions of dollars playing little boys’ games. Putting the players aside for a moment -- much has been written over the years about events like Reggie -DFNVRQ GLVVLQJ 7KXUPDQ Munson to a reporter (“the straw that stirs the drinkâ€?), Marshawn Lynch’s strategy to avoid

JHWWLQJ ÂżQHG IRU PLVVLQJ press conferences, and Allen Iverson’s repetitive use of the word “practiceâ€? when discussing practice -let’s focus on the guys that coach them for a moment. A few weeks ago, soonWR EH ÂżUHG &LQFLQQDWL Reds manager Bryan Price launched into a tirade for the ages, joining the pantheon of epic breakdowns by coaches who couldn’t handle the mean ol’ media asking TXHVWLRQV DQG VWX̆ %DUULQJ an epic run to the World Series, which would seem unlikely given Price’s temperment, he can count on his 77 f-bomb tirade to reporters to be cherished for the ages, up there alongside the famous rants of Dennis Green, Jim Mora, Bobby Knight, Hal McRae and Mike Gundy. Big-time sports do bring a lot of big-time pressure, so I’m not entirely making light of the situation here. When you’re getting paid millions, or in the case of a manager, hundreds of thousands of dollars, to participate in the league, you want to keep the money train rolling because the window of opportunity closes quick. The program began with an orientation at the Chamber’s Blairs office in September 2014. Monthly sessions included speakers and panelists who provided a holistic approach to leadership orientation and development. During the graduation ceremony, participants used their own creative voices to explain which one component of the program will best help them to achieve their goals and dreams. This year, 3 students from past Junior Leadership Southside classes were awarded the Averett University Junior Leadership Southside Scholarship. Congratulations to Lanie Davis, Elizabeth McBride, and Jaclyn Williams who will all be attending Averett University in the fall of 2015. The Averett University Junior Leadership Southside Scholarship is a $5,000 renewable scholarship available to every high school student who completes the Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce’s Junior Leadership Southside Program and attends Averett University. The scholarship can be utilized for up to four years for a total award of $20,000 and is awarded over and above any merit scholarships for which the student may be eligible. “We want to recognize these students’ accomplishments and to make it possible for these emerging leaders to remain here in our region,” said Averett President Dr. Tiffany Franks. “These students represent some of our area’s best and brightest talents. They are our future leaders. We are pleased to be able to offer these students Averett scholarships and the opportunity to experience the benefits of an Averett education.” Junior Leadership Southside is currently accepting applications for its seventh program year. Participants will be selected based on applications and references submitted. Applications are due on May 20th, 2015. A tuition of $195 will be used to defray the expense of monthly sessions. Financial assistance may be available upon request. Sponsorship information, program information, and program application packets are available on the Chamber’s website (www.dpchamber.org) or by contacting the Chamber at 434.836.6990 or llawson@dpchamber.org. Healthy Quesadillas Quesadillas Get a Healthy Makeover --Quesadilla is a Spanish word for “little cheese thing.” The recipe typically calls for mounds of cheese and pork chorizo between two corn tortillas. Although there’s just a small amount of cheese in this recipe, it’s the lean ground chicken, the spices and the delicious salsa that are the stars of this healthy dish. The substitution of lean ground chicken breast for pork chorizo cuts down on the calories without sacrificing any of the flavor. Chorizo sausage is usually made with ground pork and combined with fat, wine, paprika and salt and stuffed into a casing made of tripe. Paprika and red chilies are the primary spices in Mexican chorizo and infuse it with a deep reddish color. This recipe uses the same spices as the pungent Mexican sausage to marinate the ground chicken, allowing you to mimic the flavor of chorizo while cutting out the fat. Small, diced potatoes add a distinctive texture and also absorb the spices. The avocado salsa completes the dish and adds a burst of fresh citrus with the addition of the lime juice. Try one of these healthy quesadillas, accompanied by a dab of fat-free sour cream, if desired, for breakfast, lunch or dinner. You’ll never miss the original recipe! “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.”

1/2 pound ground all-natural chicken breast 2 tablespoons chili powder 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon pepper 1 small bay leaf, ground in a spice grinder 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves 1 tablespoon cider vinegar 1 cup diced and peeled potato 2 teaspoons canola oil 1/2 cup diced, purple onion 1/2 cup shredded reduced-fat Cheddar cheese 8 corn or whole-wheat tortillas The Salsa: 1/2 ripe avocado 1/2 cup chopped tomato 1/2 cup diced purple onion 1 large garlic clove, minced 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro leaves 1/2 Serrano chili, minced 2 teaspoons fresh lime juice 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon pepper To prepare the Quesadillas: 1. Combine the chicken, chili powder, salt, pepper, bay leaf, cinnamon, Italian seasoning, cloves and vinegar in a bowl, mix well. Set aside. 2. Boil the potato in lightly salted water in a saucepan until tender, drain. Heat 1 teaspoon canola oil in a nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Saute the chicken mixture, stirring to break up the pieces, until the chicken is almost cooked through. 3. Add the potato, onion and remaining canola oil, cook until the potatoes begin to brown. Remove from heat and mash mixture. Top each of 4 tortillas with an equal amount of chicken mixture. Top with shredded Cheddar cheese, then another tortilla. Spray a griddle or nonstick skillet with non-stick cooking spray. 4. Cook the Quesadillas over medium heat until both sides are crisp, turning once. To prepare the Salsa: In a small bowl, mix together the avocado, tomato, onion, garlic, cilantro, chili, lime juice, salt and pepper until well-combined. Cut Quesadillas into wedges and serve with the salsa. Makes 4 servings. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children’s author, culinary historian and author of seven cookbooks. HOW HOMEOWNERS CAN REDUCE THEIR MONTHLY EXPENSES Saving money is a priority for many people. But reducing monthly expenses is typically a bigger concern for homeowners, especially new homeowners adjusting to life with a mortgage, higher energy bills than they likely had while renting and other costs associated with owning their own homes. Home ownership is a dream for many people, but the realization of just how expensive owning a home can be is often eye-opening once you get the keys and move in. Once the initial sticker shock has worn off, homeowners should know that the cost of home ownership need not be so steep. In fact, there are several ways homeowners can cut costs without drastically changing their lifestyle. * Combine your insurance coverages. Many lenders mandate that borrowers carry homeowners insurance for their homes. The cost of coverage varies from company to company, and one of the ways homeowners can reduce the cost of their homeowners insurance is to bundle their homeowners coverage with their auto insurance. Some companies provide discounted premiums as high as 15 percent for policy holders who combine their homeowners and auto insurance coverage. Speak with your current provider to determine if combining your coverage could save you money. If the savings are not significant, shop around for an insurance company that can offer you the lower price you desire. Just be sure the company is accessible and reputable. * Refinance your mortgage. Refinancing your mortgage is another great way homeowners can save a substantial amount of money. Even if you only recently purchased your home, your lender might be willing to refinance your mortgage with a lower interest rate. Depending on the amount of time and money left on your loan, reducing your interest rate by 2 percent can save you a substantial amount of money on your monthly mortgage payment, which can add up to considerable savings on the total interest you will pay over the life of the loan. If you think your interest rate is a tad too high, consult your lender and discuss refinancing at a lower rate. * Bundle your services. More and more consumers have decided to bundle their Internet, phone and television packages. Consumer Reports found that bundling just two of those services instead of buying them from separate providers can save consumers between 40 to 60 percent depending on where they live. Rates for bundling packages often come with an expiration date, but a Consumer Reports survey found that even those packages come with some wiggle room. In their 2011 Annual Telecom Survey, Consumer Reports found that one-third of survey participants attempted to negotiate a lower rate for their bundled services, and 90 percent of those efforts were successful. When negotiating, discuss lower prices for bundling as well as extending the package beyond the current expiration date. It never hurts to ask, and one study has already shown that it actually helps to ask. * Go green. Going green benefits the environment, and it’s almost certain to benefit homeowners’ wallets. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, toilets account for more water usage in the home than any other appliance or fixture. But the EPA also notes that a family of four can save thousands of dollars by switching to a high-efficiency toilet over that toilet’s lifetime. And installing eco-friendly appliances or fixtures around your home might even make you eligible for certain tax breaks while also updating your home, something that will make the home more attractive to prospective buyers when you sell down the road. There are many ways to make a home more environmentally friendly, and nearly all of them can save you money over the long run.
