Rare Nerve Problem Causes Chronic Cough

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had a chronic cough for over 30 years. As you can imagine, I have seen numerous specialists through the years, and none of the prescribed treatments has worked. A friend suggested I might have laryngeal neuropathy. My doctor didn’t know anything about it. What is the solution for this condition? -- A.B. ANSWER: I can’t blame your doctor for not knowing anything about it. I’ve never recognized a case of it, though I wonder now, having researched it, whether it might be more common than we think. The word “neuropathy” just means “a nerve problem,” and in this case, it’s one of the nerves in the throat, the superior laryngeal nerve or recurrent laryngeal nerve. It’s a sensory neuropathy, meaning that the nerve is sending the brain incorrect information, which the brain misinterprets as a need to cough or clear the throat. Most people diagnosed with this condition have sudden onset of cough, often after surgery or viral illness. The condition is diagnosed by an expert ENT doctor via a nerve conduction test or a video test of the larynx. In the largest paper on this syndrome, about two-thirds of study participants were relieved by gabapentin (Neurontin), a medication used for many types of neuropathy. Some physicians choose to try this medication without doing the testing. This approach sometimes makes sense, especially when diagnostic testing is difficult or expensive. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 47-year-old male in generally good health. In 1999, I was

involved in a nasty car accident, ending up in a trauma center. I needed abdominal surgery to repair a ruptured small intestine. Today, 15 years after the fact, is it possible to have issues with the scar tissue from that surgery? I have some of the symptoms of scar tissue problems, but a doc has told me I have diverticulitis. Can you help me? -- M.F. ANSWER: Well, I can’t tell you what you have, but I certainly can confirm that scar tissue, called adhesions, can cause problems even years after the original trauma that caused them. Adhesions are bands of scar tissue that can envelop the intestine, causing an obstruction. Most of the time the obstruction is partial, and with time and bowel rest, the problem resolves itself. However, sometimes it doesn’t, or the obstruction is complete, and in those cases it will require another trip to the operating room. Diverticula are small outpouchings in the intestinal wall, most commonly in the sigmoid colon. The condition is called diverticulosis and is very common, with about 20 percent of people at age 40 and 60 percent of people age 60 having them. When they get inflamed, that is called diverticulitis, and symptoms include abdominal pain, fever, nausea and vomiting, or bowel changes. A CT scan usually can diagnose both conditions. It’s possible to have both problems at the same time, which makes determining the cause of current symptoms difficult. Still, the CT scan would be the next step if you are having symptoms. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. CREDIT Solutions

with Suzie Bohannon Financial Counselor

Using Credit Paying off Cards creditWisely cards…. 2014 statistics show that the average credit card debt in America is over $15,000.00. Many people that I counsel want to know how to pay off credit card debt. Here are a couple of steps that will help you to get started. First work toward paying off you balances that have the highest interest rates. These will usually be department store cards. You want to make sure that you are making your minimum payments on the other cards and do not incur more fees. Also resist the temptation to keep using the cards…but do not close them. Closing them can lower your credit score. Once you have paid one credit card off then start with the next one. Set up your payments to come out of your account automatically thru your billpay. This will insure that payments will be made on time and with very little effort. Remember just because it is a monthly payment doesn’t mean that you can’t make a weekly payment thru billpay. If you have a monthly payment of $25 then pay $10 or $15 dollars a week and you will get this paid off in no time.

Answers 1. Al Stewart, in 1976. The album version was 6 minutes 40 seconds long, of which 4 minutes is instrumental. 2. “I Feel Fine.” John Lennon kept playing with a guitar riff while the group recorded another song, and he eventually wrote this song just so he could use that particular riff. 3. Club Nouveau, in 1987. Their biggest hit, however, was Bill Withers’ “Lean on Me” the same year. 4. Del Shannon, of “Runaway” fame. 5. “Careless Whisper,” by George Michael in 1984, although he was still performing with Wham!. Co-writer Michael later said that although the song has meant so much to so many people, it didn’t mean anything to him when he wrote it. Released as a b-side, the song topped charts around the world. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Attorney General Herring Coming to Lynchburg to Screen Documentary on Heroin and Prescription Opioid Drug Abuse Lynchburg, VA- On Tuesday, May 3, 2016, Virginia Attorney General Mark R. Herring will present Heroin: The Hardest Hit, a powerful documentary about the danger of heroin and prescription opioid drugs and their impact on Virginia families and communities. This free program will be held at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital’s First Colony Conference Center, 1901 Tate Springs Road, Lynchburg 24501. The event will begin with a 6:30 pm reception featuring area resources and light refreshments followed by Attorney General Herring introducing the film at 7:00 pm. The 45-minute documentary will then be shown, with Herring discussing the movie afterwards. Two local people in recovery will also briefly tell their stories. The evening will culminate with a call to action to community members. This special event is co-sponsored by Centra Addiction & Recovery Services and the UP (Unlimited Potential) Foundation, a youth oriented recovery organization, located in Lynchburg. Heroin: The Hardest Hit was produced late last year by the Office of Attorney General and features Virginians sharing personal stories of addiction, overdose and recovery, as well as moving testimony from parents who have lost their children to overdoses. Additionally, it contains insights from law enforcement and public health professionals who are working to address the crisis. Heroin overdose fatalities in Virginia have more than doubled from 100 deaths in 2011 to 239 deaths in 2014, while an additional 547 Virginians died from prescription drug overdose in 2014. Between 2011 and 2013, every region of the state experienced an increase in heroin overdose fatalities. In 2014, more Virginians were killed by heroin and prescription opioid drug overdoses than automobile crashes. To view a trailer of the movie, visit: https://youtu.be/EWvOR-h-PsE

PEEP TALK ! You don’t ever have to worry about anyone ceasing to read the Piedmont Shopper. My uncle, Henry D. Hopkins, is 87 years old & he goes somewhere to get a stack of them each week. He delivers them to the nursing home, and to his friends in his neighborhood. He makes sure everyone gets a copy every week! He and his wife Shirley love to share it and laugh at the jokes and stories. That paper is the heartbeat for a lot of people! My daughter, Ruby, sells Scentsy and she has used your paper for many occasions. She knows that is the one paper that everyone reads! Our church, Central Boulevard Church of God, just used your paper for our Vendor Spring Fling on 4/11/15, and I am sure half or more of the people came because of the Shopper!” -Deborah Severt

The acting principal deputy undersecretary for benefits at the Department of Veterans Affairs has been suspended for 15 days for letting two of his underlings work the system. The two had forced others to move and transfer to different jobs and then grabbed the newly vacated posts for themselves. For this he only gets a 15day wrist slap?! Adding to the debacle was that the VA’s Office of the Inspector General had unearthed over 20 hefty relocation-scam cases wherein senior executives were relocated to new positions and given fat raises during a time when others were blocked from salary increases. The new deputy replaced the one who’d had to retire after all the allegations came out, so he should have known exactly what was going on and stopped it. The official bio for the new acting deputy says that he’s in charge of 20,000 employees across the 56 regional offices and is

responsible for $90 billion in benefits to veterans and their dependents. These involve the whole list of benefits, including compensation, home loan guaranty, vocational rehab, education ... all of it. And what of those two regional directors who abused their authority and pushed others out of their jobs? They were demoted ... not fired, not sent to jail, just demoted. And now they’ve apparently been reinstated, although with a 10 percent cut in pay. The Merit Systems Protection Board gave them their jobs back because their bosses at the time had allowed all the mischief. Nowhere is there any talk of their having to pay back the $400,000 in moving expenses they received, even though one of them only moved 140 miles and netted $300,000 in travel expenses, which included reimbursement for $76 for alcoholic beverages. * “Spring sports are in full swing for us, and we definitely still use the slow cooker. I often double recipes to freeze when I cook. When the recipe allows, I thaw the dinners for the week in the fridge. After school but before sports, I put the thawed meal in the slow cooker to heat up while we’re out. It works great for spaghetti sauce with meatballs, cooked chicken, meatloaf or cube steak and stews, etc. Coming home to a warm, almost-ready meal is a blessing after being out on the field. We’re usually starved.” -- E.I. in New York * Things from the kitchen you can add to your vegetable garden: leftover chamomile tea, black tea leaves, coffee grounds, banana skins, the water left behind when cooking vegetables, etc. Also, look up how to make your own compost pile. It does not have to be big! You can find information on the Internet or at the library. * If you’re chopping a lot of tomatoes and need to remove the seeds, this tip will leave you spinning. Then my grandma saw it rolling around my vanity, dropping on the floor (gross). She gave me an egg cup to use. (MS) — Thinking green throughout the year can offer some significant benefits. Here are some easy ways you can go green in your own home and lower your energy bills: Invest in a programmable thermostat. It will automatically adjust the temperature in your house, saving you energy while you’re out for the day, away on vacation or sleeping. Switch all of your lightbulbs to CFLs (compact fluorescent light) or LED bulbs. They last longer and use up to 75 percent less energy than standard incandescent bulbs, saving you money on your electric bills. Insulate well. Use insulation with a high Rvalue, such as Roxul Comfortbatt, to top up insulation in your attic. Aim for an R-value of 50 or a depth of 16 inches. For whole home efficiency, ensure other areas of your home are well insulated, such as crawl spaces, basement headers, walls and ceilings. It will keep your house cool in the warm weather and take the stress off your air conditioning unit. Stop air leaks around your home by sealing existing gaps and cracks. Use caulking or weather stripping around doors and windows. Installing a door sweep is also a good idea. Replace old appliances with energy-efficient models. Only do laundry or run the dishwasher when you have full loads. Remember that many little improvements can add up — providing valuable monthly savings for you, while protecting our environment for the future.
