MOBILIZING HEALTHCARE IN OUR COMMUNITY “We don’t want you to have to leave your house for any aspect of your care...” states Micah Pacifico, RN, and CoFounder of GoDocs. “On the road” since November of last year, GoDocs has been filling a need known by many in this area by bringing the resources of a medical practice to the comfort of your own home. Within 24-36 hours of the first phone call, you can have a physician and a nurse visit you at your home, work, school, and most assisted living facilities and nursing homes. With their main goal being to provide their patients with all needed medical attention without leaving their home, GoDocs is capable of administering many medical services right in your home-primary care, X-rays, bloodwork with results in a couple of hours, flu swabs, EKG’s, RSVs, urine tests, IV therapy, you name it. The response from this service is already overwhelmingly positive, and there are so many stories to be heard of thankful patients and their families. There are many in this area who are homebound, or rely on transportation services to take them to and from doctor’s appointments. The transportation process can sometimes become difficult and expensive, and leaves many opting to not go to the doctor when they really should. These patients are the ones who Dr. Neil Lahurd and Micah had in mind when they originally formed the idea while working together in the ER. What they have come to find is that parents are also loving this service, and children are becoming about 40% of their patient population, which is why they have become credentialed with the majority of insurance providers. It’s great for the mom of multiple children, who dreads taking all of her children, only one of whom is actually sick, into a doctor’s office. With undeniable convenience, an extremely professional and caring staff, comparable pricing, and a determination to solve some tough situations faced by many in our community, it’s no wonder the GoDocs have so many raving reviews on their Facebook page. “You don’t run it, it runs you. We don’t drop the ball, we’ve never not shown up.” states Donald Fouts, GoDocs Business Manager and long time friend of Pacifico. As of right now, the GoDocs medical team consists of the above mentioned Dr.Neil Lahurd, Leslie Powell, PA-C, and Micah Pacifico, RN, ACLS, PALS. As of May 1st, GoDocs will welcome Dr. Kevin Lingle, an Interventional Cardiologist from Duke University. This will get the team one step closer to branching into every specialty that could be needed by their patients-meaning that from start to finish- original appointment to specialistpatients will not have to leave their home. “Most people can’t believe that they can have a doctor come to their house, and now they’ll be able to have a cardiologist come to their house.” says Micah “I think we’re able to eliminate all of the negative aspects of healthcare, for the average person.” Spending an estimated 30-50 minutes inside each home, the team has noted that patients seem to respond very well to having doctors come inside their home. “They’re in disbelief.” says Dr. Lahurd “We come in with our bags, and we talk to the patient, the relatives, and we all come together as a team. It’s a collaborative effort.” If a patient needs prescriptions, GoDocs can get those to them. If a patient has needs from a home health care agency, GoDocs can help them get that set up. If a patient shows signs that they need to be admitted to the hospital, GoDocs can get that started for them, as well. Which leads to the next issue they’re hoping to be able to help with, and that’s the hospital

This technician is the IT security oďŹƒcer for a health care organization, so his job has two main functions: beefing up security and keeping doctors happy.

2409 Franklin Tpke • Danville, VA 24540 (Beside Ruben’s on 41)

“We were increasing the level of security across the board to comply with government regulations,â€? he said. “And as with most health care organizations, all sta members cater to the doctors, no matter what they want.â€?

MOBILIZING HEALTHCARE IN OUR COMMUNITY readmission rate within 30 days. “The only way to do that is when that patient leaves the hospital to go back home, have someone like us get to that house, keep them ‘tuned upâ€? as long as we can, keep them healthy, so they don’t bounce back (to the hospital) in the next 30 days.â€? says Dr. Lahurd. In talking with Dr. Lahurd, Micah, and Donald, it was very obvious that their number one focus is on their patients. They didn’t have many business models to go on when developing this idea, there are only two other companies like them in the country, which is actually pretty ideal. No two locations are the same, so GoDocs is able to tailor their business to their community and it’s needs. Eventually, GoDocs plans to simplify healthcare for many more. “There’s no end in sight.â€? says Fouts. GoDocs spend most of their time on the road, but they do have a brick and mortar oďŹƒce where they store patient files, and where patients can call and schedule appointments, or reach the doctors afterhours. To schedule an appointment, or just get more information on how GoDocs can simplify healthcare for you, visit their website at www.godocsmed.com, or call 434-835-4876. You can also find testimonials from many of the families they have helped on their Facebook page, www.facebook.com/godocs. “What’s complex about medicine is delivering and rendering good care. What separates one good provider from another is being there when you say you’re going to be there. Being kind, friendly, and curteous. Answering all the questions, and getting all those treatments to them.â€? Dr. Neil Lahurd.

Q: Awhile back you wrote that “The Mortal Instrumentsâ€? was going to become a TV series, but I’ve seen nothing about that since. Is it still happening? -- Ellie R., via email A: Back when I reported that, everything was still in the beginning stages of development, so there weren’t a whole lot of details. Finally, I can say with certainty that “The Mortal Instrumentsâ€? book series will indeed be reimagined on the small screen as “Shadowhunters.â€? For those unfamiliar with the book series, “Shadowhuntersâ€? centers RQ &ODU\ )UD\ ZKR ÂżQGV out on her 18th birthday that she comes from a long line of human/angel hybrids who hunt down and kill demons. ABC Family will air the HSLVRGH ÂżUVW VHDVRQ with shooting expected to commence in May. There is no casting or premiere date news yet, but just knowing that showrunner and executive producer Ed Decter (“Helix,â€? “Unforgettable,â€? “The Client Listâ€?) is heading up the project makes me feel conÂżGHQW WKDW WKH 79 VHULHV will fare better than the not-so-great 2013 feature ÂżOP *** Q: I love the ABC series “Cristela.â€? Do you know if it will be back for a second season? -- Geena F. in West Virginia A: ABC will announce May 14 which series will be coming back, as well as the new series that will debut this fall. I spoke with “Cristelaâ€? co-star Maria Canals-Barerra recently, and she is keeping a positive outlook regarding the future of her show. “There’s a lot of thoughtful storytelling on ‘Cristela,’

Maria Canals- Barerra and I feel really good about it based on how I feel about the episodes, the writing and the fact that the ratings have been decent. I’m very optimistic. Just because I’m in it doesn’t mean I’ve been blinded to it. I really do think I have some perspective because I’ve been in the business so long.â€? As season one comes to an end, let’s hope we get a second season, because Maria promises we won’t be disappointed: “There are JRLQJ WR EH D ORW RI GL̆HUHQW dynamics to set up season two. I told the writers: “You guys are so good. The way you set up season two, everyone is going to be like, ‘I can’t wait to watch it.’â€? *** READERS: The folks at Fox have been teasing for months, even years, about the possible re-exploration of “The X-Files.â€? I am thrilled to report that it is ṘFLDO Âł7KH ; )LOHV´ ZLOO return to Fox as a sixepisode event series. Series creator, executive producer and head writer Chris Carter is on board, as are series stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. Mitch Pileggi will return as Skinner, as well as Annabeth Gish and Robert Patrick as Reyes and Doggett, respectively. Production begins this summer, with the series likely airing in 2016. Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475; or e-mail her at letters@cindyelavsky. com. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

But he’s puzzled when he gets a call from a doctor’s assistant asking that the doctor’s digital signature be renewed. Being the security oďŹƒcer, he knew that they had not implemented any sort of digital signature technology, let alone rolled it out to the doctors. He asked how the signature was implemented, and of course the doctor didn’t know. So he asked who had originally set this up. Turns out it was a high-level systems analyst who’s been in the organization for years. So he calls her to ask about the digital signature. “Oh, yeah, I’ve set up about 30 doctors with digital signatures in their e-mail,â€? she tells him. “Using what technology?â€? he asks. “I have them sign a blank piece of paper, then I scan it and embed the bitmap in their e-mail signature file along with their name and phone number.â€? “Umm, how long has this been done?â€? “We’ve been using it for over a year,â€? analyst says. “The doctors love it!â€? “You realize that anyone you send that e-mail to now has an exact copy of the doctor’s signature?â€? he asks. “And then they can forge all kinds of communications, not only digital but printed, including prescriptions?â€? “Oh, I never thought of it that way.â€? “This needs to stop immediately,â€? he tells her. “Well, I’ve told three more doctors that I’ll set them up, so I have to do them, but I won’t sign up any more after that.â€? “No, you don’t understand,â€? he says. “You will have to remove this from everyone who is using it.â€? “They won’t like that.â€? “You think they want to find out that someone has forged documents using this ‘digital signature’?â€? he asks. “I don’t think they would like that either,â€? analyst admits. The technician later found out that this request for renewal of the signature was made because the doctor’s original “digital signatureâ€? was too legible. He wanted to do it over -- “better.â€?

WHERE TO FISH? Bobby Mitchell, Expert & Master Angler-offers some information on where the fish are biting. Not all of his secrets, of course, but this is a start! Lakes Smith Mountain Lake is about an hour’s drive from Danville. It offers fishing that is popular to folks all over the East Coast. The striper fishing can be very good, along with bass and crappie. I highly recommend hiring a guide for your first Smith Mt trip. Once you know the deal, have at it! Buggs Island, or Kerr Reservoir is an hour and a half to the east of Danville. Once best known for only crappie and bass fishing, this sprawling lake has recently become famous for having given up the VA State Record Arkansas Blue Catfish. That fish weighed 143lbs. Wow! If you are boat fishing, I recommend Occoneechee State Park boat ramp. Everything you need to go fishing is within sight of the ramp. If you need to bank fish, Staunton River State Park is the place to go. Take your bait and a strong rod, try your luck at another state record! Rivers I have spoken with a man in Bassett that has caught a 2lb Brown Trout in the Smith River. Trout fishing in the Smith requires additional licensure, and this can be purchased wherever VA State Fishing is sold. Be sure to follow state regulations. 6 fish per day, for instance. I’m going to make this trip, Lord willing. I’ll try 2lb test line, on an ultra light spinning reel on a 6ft light action Ugly Stik. Chartreuse power bait seems to be the most popular color. Our local K Mart provides what you need to catch a Smith River Trout. By the By, a pair of waders can be helpful. Trust me, that mountain water is C O L D. A good place to start is behind the Philpott Reservation Dam. There are pullover spots along the river in Bassett. Ponds There are plenty of ponds that can offer good fishing in the Danville/Pittsylvania Co area. Unless you have your own pond, the only way to fish a private pond is with the permission of the owner. If you are fortunate enough to have access to a private pond, be grateful. Never leave behind trash, always leave it like you found it. These simple courtesies, along with maybe offering a few bucks to the owner may help your chances of fishing at your favorite pond on a regular basis.

Fan voting open BY BILL DYER Special to the Piedmont Shopper Fan voting for the NASCAR Hall of Fame Class of 2016 opened on March 31st on NASCAR.com and UXQV WKURXJK 0RQGD\ 0D\ 7KH ÂżYH QRPLQHHV receiving the highest percentage of votes will makeup the Fan Vote ballot. Following are the 20 nominees for induction into the NASCAR Hall of Fame, listed alphabetically: Buddy Baker, Red Bryon, Richard Childress, Jerry Cook, Ray Evernham, Ray Fox, Ray Hendrick, Harry Hyde, Bobby Isaac, Alan Kulwicki, Terry Labonte, 0DUN 0DUWLQ +HUVKHO 0F*UL̆ 5D\PRQG 3DUNV %HQQ\ 3DUVRQV /DUU\ 3KLOOLSV 2 %UXWRQ 6PLWK 0LNH Stefanik, Curtis Turner and Robert Yates. The 2016 Class will be voted on and announced at the NASCAR Hall of Fame on May 20. Could care less ,I \RX OLYH RQ 3ODQHW 2QH FHUWDLQO\ by now you’ve heard of NASCAR lowering the boom on the Richard Childress-owned No. 31 Chevrolet team driven by Ryan Newman on the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit. $ ÂżQH RI ZDV OHYLHG RQ 1HZPDQÂśV crew chief, Luke Lambert, plus a suspension from the next six Sprint Cup races and placed on probation through December 31. James Bender, a team tire WHFKQLFLDQ DQG 3KLOLS 6XUJHQ D WHDP HQJLQHHU DOVR have been suspended for the next six races. Wait, there’s more. Newman along with &KLOGUHVV KDV EHHQ GRFNHG ZLWK WKH ORVV RI championship driver and championship car owner points. All penalties have been appealed. The fuss centers on tire manipulation. And once again NASCAR has made its point that The Big Three -- tires, engines and fuel – are not to be tampered with. But in this case of tires, it’s ludicrous to think the Childress team, if guilty, was stepping over the line by drilling tiny holes in a tire. Let’s face it: Why would any team drill a hole in a tire? The answer is simple if you are an engineer. There is a point in the life of a tire when the tire will perform at its best and durability will be at its best when air pressure reaches a certain point. At each race, Goodyear supplies teams with a graph that includes a performance and durability line. Somewhere in the graph the lines cross, and that means the tire is performing at its best. But there is no way to maintain the perfect air pressure. Teams always begin a run on low air pressure. Then they wait until that pressure grows over a run. The pressure continues to grow over a long run and that’s where the tire drilling kicks in. It helps to reduce the pressure gradually which keeps the tires closer to the performance line. When we speak of holes we’re speaking of tiny holes – about 10,000th of an inch in size. That’s not even visible, and how NASCAR can police that is beyond me. But the infractions levied on Childress, regardless of the outcome of the appeal, a strong message is being sent to the garage area about tire “bleeding.â€? In summation, if the issue is not one of safety, then why bother. If the inspectors are spending all their time policing tires it only opens the door for cheating elsewhere. When NASCAR closes the door on the tire debacle, the Newman team will have their work cut out for them to make the Chase. Aside from the monetary impact at RCR, the tire penalty isn’t WKDW FULSSOLQJ 1HZPDQÂśV VHDVRQ LVQÂśW RYHU :KLOH SRLQWV LV KXJH WR DQ\ GULYHU 1HZPDQ FDQ VWLOO ÂżQG KLV way and earn a spot in the Chase by simply winning one of the remaining 20 races before the Chase begins, something he hasn’t done since July 2013. And that may be too much for Newman.

Happy

14th Birthday

To Our Son -

Mullin Anticipation

--Basketball legend Chris Mullin has been named the head coach of the St. Johns Red Storm. He’s a rookie coach, so this column is for all the young recruits out there who don’t know about Chris Mullin, and all of the naysayers who may have forgotten. See, a long, long time ago, probably in the same room you’re sitting in now, RQO\ GL̆HUHQW EHFDXVH WKH rugs were a bit shaggier and probably the color of burnt sienna, there was TV. And it was good. The 2-inch-thick glass screen was set in an attractive wood cabinet that smelled vaguely of lemon-scented furniture polish, and there were two GLDOV VHW R̆ WR WKH ULJKW The top dial was the one for the human race. When you turned it, you could tune in to these selections: 2 (there was no 1), 4, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13. The bottom dial was apparently for the Druids, because nobody knew what that dial was for. Then one day, the rabbit ears on top of the TV disappeared, replaced by a little brown box with three rows of buttons and a long brown cable. With great anticipation, we all settled in to see what was on the other side of channel 13. For my group of friends, WKH DIWHUQRRQV ZHUH ÂżOOHG with wrestling. Jimmy Âł6XSHUĂ€\´ 6QXND $QGUH the Giant, Sgt. Slaughter and the pesky Iron Sheik became staples of our enjoyment. At night the WWF gave way to another league: The Big East. That little brown box DQG WKDW Ă€HGJOLQJ VSRUWV network (third button from the left on the second row) changed everything. All of those phony wrestling story lines were replaced by an even more colorful cast of the most implausible group you can

imagine -- a bunch of kids and the coaches that loved them shooting hoops for the Tri-State area’s local Catholic colleges, colleges that most of the nation west of I-95 had never heard of. What’s a Hoya? Which exit for Seton Hall? You play games at Rhode Island? What’s with that guy’s sweater? Let’s stop there for a moment. The guy wearing the sweater was Lou Carnesecca. He was the coach of St. Johns. His shooting guard was Chris Mullin, and the kid was lights out. He’s the guy that’s going to be recruiting you, the guy who’s going to be coaching you, and dealing with the boosters and the press. Real quick, here’s his resume: Education: McDonald’s High School All-American, three-time Big East player of the year, three-time All-American and winner of both the Oscar Robertson and John Wooden Awards, which is basically the basketball Heisman. Professional experience: Five-time NBA All-Star, averaged 20 points per game, GM of the Golden State Warriors, VP of the Sacramento Kings. Volunteer work: Twotime Olympic Gold Medal winner, original member of WKH Âł'UHDP 7HDP ´ Awards: Yeah. He’s in the Hall of Fame. All of them. To the detractors, let’s reason this out. The kids may not know who he is, but the parents sure do, and he knows the academic part of the equation because he’s already done that ... he went there. Boosters? You’re welcome. All that’s left for Mullin is our anticipation of what’s on next. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in Kansas City. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

COREY TILLER - April 8th

To Our Son, We hope you know how much we love you so. We might embarrass you from time to time giving lots of love and needless kisses, but you need to know Mom & Dad love you so. Before you were born we didn’t know just how much we would love you, but when we looked into your eyes for the Òrst time, we felt our heart grow and grow. A parents love is hard to explain, not everyone will feel the same. Now that you are getting older, we felt the need to tell you just how much we love you. Time may pass day after day or year after year, but the love we have for you grows nearer and dearer to our hearts each day and to you our son. We love you so much. You are our shining star and our sunshine even on a cloudy day. Enjoy your special day. We Love You!

Living With a Purpose

--Seniors who have a purpose in life are less likely to develop damage in the areas in the brain that can cause stroke, according to a recent study from the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center in Chicago. Damage in the same areas also can cause disability, death and dementia. In this study, more than 450 seniors with an average age of 84 were tested until death. Those with purpose were 44 percent less likely to have larger areas of damage in the brain. In another study of some 1,000 seniors at the Rush Center, those who scored high on having purpose to their lives were 2.4 times more likely to avoid Alzheimer’s and cognitive (c) 2015 King Features impairment. Attending the 2015 Virginia State Beta Convention in Richmond from Galileo were (back row, left to right) Caleb Koch, Alexandra Reddy, Nakia Stephens, Trysten Wiggins, Edmond Fitzgerald, Gabriela Blair, Heather Toone, Scott Machado, Wil McLaughlin, Sponsor Dannie Mills (front row, left to right) Erick Eusebio, Katie O’Daniel, Melissa Throckmorton, Skyler Tuggle, Kate Adcock, Chrisha Llana, Abby Schleifer, Michelle Holt, Nicholas Matherly, and Jonathan McCain.

GALILEO BETA CLUB The weekend of March 20-22 will stick out in the minds of Galileo Magnet High School Beta Members for a long time to come as their hard work earned them a third place overall win at the Virginia State Convention in Richmond, the first time the club has placed at the prestigious event. Leading amongst the memorable moments is Junior Alexandra Reddy’s win as President of the Virginia State Beta Club after a tough race against Skyler Campbell from Smithfield High School. “When I heard my name called out as the new president, I felt like I was on Cloud 9. It really didn’t feel real. I walked up there in shock. It was an incredible feeling that I had never felt before,” Reddy said. “Getting ready for convention I felt overwhelmed and stressed until I got there and I saw everyone supporting me and there by my side, then it became fun getting ready to meet everyone and less stressful.” Reddy said her favorite part of the campaign was meeting new people and listening to why they joined Beta and what they wanted to get out of the Beta experience. “I am excited about the next step. I want to make it a new year, planned with new activities for Beta that are different than we have done in before,” Reddy said. “I want our Beta Club and all of the Beta Clubs across the nation to come together and work in unison. Service projects and outreach projects should involve everyone and I want all of the clubs to be involved. The Beta motto is “Let us lead by serving others” and coming together will help us accomplish so much more in this mission.” Also treasuring the awards announcement during the third general session held March 21 was Senior Skyler Tuggle as the performance of his original song “Bad Blood Blues” won him first place overall in the special talent competition. “I wasn’t really sure how to feel when they announced I had won; I was kind of in shock. I heard the second and third place called and I was nervous to walk up there but I was excited too that I had won,” Tuggle said. “I really didn’t have to practice all that much for convention because it was a song my band and I played regularly so I knew it well. I went through it the day before, kind of like cramming for a test but I knew that I was ready.” Additional awards included a first place win in spelling for Nakia Stephens, a first place win in math for Caleb Koch, a second place win in social studies for Wil McLaughlin, a third place win in French for Eddie Fitzgerald, a first place win in division 1 Spanish for Gabriella Blair, a third place win in division 2 Spanish for Trysten Wiggins, a second place win in textiles for Alex Reddy, a third place win in single color photography for Kate Adcock, and an overall third place finish for Galileo’s Quiz Bowl Team which consisted of Jon McCain, Caleb Koch, Wil McLaughlin, and Melissa Throckmorton. “I was so pleased. I knew we would do well but I didn’t expect us to do as well as we did,” Galileo Beta Club President Katie O’Daniel said. “The best part was winning third place overall because we had never placed before and it was completely unexpected. It made me feel good to be a president of a club with so much success at competition.” Having run for state officer the previous year, O’Daniel knew what Reddy could expect going into convention and was excited to be able to help her prepare for the event. “When you run for president not only do you have to do a lot to prepare for convention, coming up with and finding people for your campaign skit, creating an eye-catching tri-fold poster, and writing an entertaining speech that will capture the hearts of each club member in attendance, but you also have to make sure you stand out from others running against you by really putting yourself out there,” O’Daniel said. “Alex really tried to reach each member while she was campaigning, speaking with different groups and introducing herself to every person she came upon that she did not know. It really paid off for her and I am thrilled by her success in this endeavor.” While you would think running for office would be O’Daniel’s most stressful year at convention, on the contrary, she said being president and ensuring everyone was where they needed to be for each competition required much more of her. “It was my responsibility to make sure everyone and everything was where they were supposed to be including academic testing rooms, turning in the artwork, banner, and scrapbook when it was time, and collecting everything when judging was done. It was a lot to handle but it was all worth it in the end,” O’Daniel said. “When we leave for convention on Friday we are just a group of students but when we come back after it is all over we are a family, having built memories that will last a lifetime and relationships we will never forget.” The Galileo Beta Club is hoping to travel to the National Beta Convention in Nashville, Tenn., from June 29 – July 2, to give their state winners a chance to earn national recognition. “It was a really nice experience and to be able to win against such intelligent opponents was an honor,” Captain of the Quiz Bowl Team Jon McCain said. “I think we would be very competitive at Nationals. The original members of the quiz bowl team are from our school’s ACE Team which finished first in the Conference 44 Tournament and third at the Region 1A Tournament. Caleb is really strong in math and Will, Melissa, and I are strong in historical facts and other trivia so we really make a great team.” Sponsor of the Galileo Beta Club Dannie Mills said he was pleased that the group’s hard work paid off as they worked hard to have representation in each category, only missing someone to complete agriculture in the academic tests as well as participants in two categories of on-site art. “I was elated with the outcome. This is the best we have done at convention plus we haven’t had a state officer since I have been here,” Mills said. “It was long overdue because we worked very hard to get these awards and everything seemed to turn out so well. When students are successful it makes them want to continue. They represented our school well and I am so proud of our accomplishments.”

RED VELVET BROWNIES Ingredients: 2 large eggs 1/2 cup (1 stick or 115g) unsalted butter 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1/4 cup (21g) unsweetened cocoa powder 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 Tablespoon liquid or gel red food coloring 3/4 teaspoon white vinegar 3/4 cup (95g) all-purpose flour CHEESECAKE SWIRL 8 ounces (224g) cream cheese, softened 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar 1 egg yolk 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract Directions: Preheat the oven to 350F degrees. Spray 8x8 baking pan with nonstick spray. Set aside.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!! PROVIDENCE SPRING FLING APRIL 25TH & 26TH, 2015 A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold the bird froze and fell to the ground in a large field. While he was lying there, a cow came by and used the bathroom, covering him in poop. As the frozen bird lay there in the piled of cow dung, he began to realize how warm he was. The dung was actually thawing him out! He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy. A passing cat heard the bird singing and came to investigate. Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of cow dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him. Morals of the story? 1) Not everyone who craps on you is your enemy. 2) Not everyone who gets you out of crap is your friend. 3) And if you’re in DEEP crap, it’s best to keep your mouth shut.

Make the brownie layer first. In a small bowl, beat the 2 eggs together. Set aside. Melt the butter in a large microwave safe bowl in 30 second increments until melted. Stir in 1 cup sugar, 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, cocoa powder, salt, food coloring, and vinegar. Mix each of those ingredients into the batter in that order. Whisk in the eggs, then fold in the flour until completely incorporated. Do not overmix. Pour the brownie batter into prepared baking pan, leaving about 3-4 Tablespoons for the top. Make the cheesecake swirl. With a hand-held mixer on medium speed, beat the softened cream cheese, 1/4 cup sugar, egg yolk, and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla in a medium bowl until completely smooth - about 1 minute. Dollop spoonfuls of the cream cheese mixture on top of the prepared brownie batter. Cover with the last few Tablespoons of brownie batter. Glide a knife through the layers, creating a swirl pattern. Bake the brownies for 28-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean. Allow the brownies to cool completely before cutting into squares. Cover brownies and store at room temperature for 3 days or in the refrigerator for up to 6 days. Brownies will freeze well, up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator.

NATIONAL HEALTHCARE DECISION DAY

April 16, 2015 is National Healthcare Decision Day, a national health observance designed to emphasize the importance of planning for health emergencies and end-oflife care. National Healthcare Decision Day encourages the public to make their wishes and expectations about medical care and end-of-life care known to loved ones and then to solidify these wishes in an advance directive. It’s about having a conversation about important decisions that need to be discussed before it’s too late. Who will speak for you when you can’t speak for yourself? Does your family know your wishes? Does your family know your decision as far as life support? What is meaningful to you? Talk to your family and friends to make sure your voice is heard and then have it solidified with an advance directive, which is a living will and trust document. National Healthcare Decision day starts with a conversation between you and your loved ones. The conversation should include your end-of-life expectations and all pertinent and relevant documentary information that needs to be shared. Let your loved ones know your life decisions. An educational table will be set up at Centra Southside Community Hospital, Centra Bedford Memorial Hospital, Centra Virginia Baptist Hospital and Centra Lynchburg General Hospital from 11am – 1pm, Centra Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center from 9am -4pm. For more information about National Healthcare Decision Day, please visit HYPERLINK “http://www.nationalhealthcaredecisionsday.org/”www. nationalhealthcaredecisionsday.org or HYPERLINK “http://www.centrahealth. com/”www.centrahealth.com.

REAP THE BENEFITS OF A WELL-INSULATED HOME By Scott McGillivray Many of us know that insulation plays a key role in keeping our homes warm in the winter and cool in the summer. But did you know the benefits can go well beyond achieving basic R-value requirements? Quality insulation can provide a number of added benefits that contributes to the comfort, safety and efficiency of a home, including: Sound absorbency - Life is loud, but the right choice of insulation can help reduce noise transfer throughout your home. Insulating between floors and interior walls can help create a peaceful sanctuary in areas of your home, even when life is chaotic. A safe indoor environment - Good indoor air quality goes a long way toward ensuring personal comfort. Choosing insulation that is water repellant and resistant to mold, mildew, fungi, bacterial growth and rot can help to prevent common issues behind your walls that may pose serious health and safety concerns and lead to costly repairs. Look to products that will not off-gas or emit harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds). Savings - A properly insulated building will be more energy efficient, a benefit that will continue to provide return on investment long after the insulation install is complete. The result is reduced heating and cooling costs, less stress on your furnace and air conditioner (potentially leading to a longer equipment lifespan) and, at the end of day, more money in your pocket. Fire-resistance - Certain insulations, particularly stone wool insulation products such as Roxul Comfortbatt and Safe ‘n’ Sound, can help buy valuable minutes in the event of a fire, withstanding temperatures of up to 1,177°C. Non-combustible, this insulation exceeds the limits of most other insulating materials, and it won’t produce smoke or encourage the spread of flames.

Performance - It’s important to remember that not all insulations are created equal. Some insulations can sag or contract over time, leaving gaps that can let outdoor air in and conditioned air out. Choosing insulation that is dimensionally stable, durable and that offers long-term thermal performance will ensure your home can stand up in even the most challenging conditions. Stone wool products are proven to perform in even the most extreme conditions, making them ideal for use in the United States. Ultimately, you can purchase insulation as many do, based on basic R-values. But when it comes to quality, comfort, safety and efficiency, is basic really the best choice? Quality counts when it comes to all building materials. Always look for products that will deliver benefits well beyond the status quo. They spent two hours in Washington D.C. at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum. After that was all said and done, everyone enjoyed dinner and arrived back to Danville at 10:00 pm. This event was sponsored by The Hughes Foundation.

Board Games

--Q: Although I don’t consider myself a collector, I buy occasional board games and puzzles when I find good ones at flea markets or garage sales. I currently have almost 50, including “Pollyanna,” “Bomb the Navy,” “Car 54,” “Get Smart” and a 1930s edition of “Monopoly.” How can I find out if any of my games are worth keeping? -Steve, Dayton, Ohio A: Games create a feeling of nostalgia with many collectors, which has, of course, led to an increase in values. For example, your “Car 54” game, issued in 1951, currently is worth about $300, up at least tenfold from just a decade ago. There are several factors to consider when purchasing older board games. Make certain the game is complete and in good condition. Games that were issued to promote hit TV series are always popular with collectors. Consider “The Beverly Hillbillies,” “The Man from UNCLE,” “Lost in Space” and “The Waltons,” all retailing in the $25-$50 range. Bruce Whitehill is one of the foremost authorities in this field of collecting. His book, “Games: American Board Games and Their Makers 1822-1992” is considered one of the better references. Published by Wallace-Homestead, it also has current values. Whitehill buys, sells and appraises games. There is a charge for appraisals. Contact is Big Game Hunter, 11 South

Angell Street, No. 116, Providence, RI 02906; games@ thebiggamehunter. com; and www. thebiggamehunter. com. *** Q: In 1971, my wife and I purchased some items from the RMS Queen Mary. They include a ship’s clock plaque, telescope and survival kit whistle. All have certificates of authenticity. I must sell these items and would like to know current values. -- George, Sun City West, Arizona A: You might get a sinking feeling when I tell you what I discovered when I contacted several collectors who specialize in ocean liner collectibles. The items you purchased at the gift shop of the Queen Mary might not be worth much more than what you originally paid. To determine present values, you could monitor eBay to see if similar items are being offered for sale, or contact an expert. Sara Conklin is a member of the International Society of Appraisers, and she is knowledgeable about ocean liner collectibles. Her address is P.O. Box 20203, Cromberg, CA 96103. Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. Due to the large volume of mail he receives, Mr. Cox cannot personally answer all reader questions, nor do appraisals. Do not send any materials requiring return mail.
