MARGARET ANN PAYNE RUNION Margaret Ann Payne Runion, 83, passed on April 4, 2015 surrounded by her family. Margaret Ann was born January 28, 1932 in Chattanooga, TN, the daughter of the late Margaret “Hughey” Bray and William Woodward. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education from University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Mrs. Payne Runion was a Physical Education teacher with the Frederick County School system from 1963 until her retirement in 1988. She was a sponsor of the James Wood High School Class of 1965, as well as the coach for the JV Cheerleading Team. She remarried Richard Runion on April 3, 2009 in Winchester, VA. Although she fought Alzheimer’s for a number of years, her loving husband was able to take wonderful care of her in their home in Winchester. She also attended the Adult Day Care assisted by their caring staff, whom she loved dearly. Surviving with her husband are four children she raised, Wanda Payne Jacquis of CA, Stephen H. Payne (Elaine) of Martinsburg, WV, Phyllis Payne Cooke (Matthew) of Gainesville, VA, and Marissa Jacquis Sheffield (Shane) of Winchester, VA. Also surviving are step-sons Richard L. Runion, II of NV, Kevin P. Runion of Harrisonburg, VA, Phillip S. Runion (Jodi) of Martinsburg, WV, Damon A. Runion of TX, and John V. Runion of Reston, VA; brother, Ralph Woodward of Soddy Daisy, TN; thirteen grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren. REVEREND EDWIN GAYLE BURCH Reverend Edwin Gayle Burch, 76, of Staunton, VA passed a w a y Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at Augusta Health, Fishersville, VA. Mr. Burch was born on June 13, 1938 in Martinsville, VA to the late Edwin Fuller Burch and Vinney Cox Burch. He was preceded in death by his first wife Virginia Louise Via Burch. Reverend Burch graduated from Martinsville High School in 1956 and Virginia Tech in 1961 where he was in the Corp of Cadets. He worked for DuPont, Boeing Aerospace and Sperry Rand Computers until 1977, when he entered seminary at Emory University in Atlanta. He received his Masters in Divinity in 1980. He served various United Methodist churches in the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church and retired in 2001; however, he then served Chatham Heights UMC, Martinsville, VA and re-retired in 2010. Reverend Burch enjoyed traveling (especially via cruise ships), gardening, and spending time with his family. He had a love for scifi movies and Hokie football and would often pair watching either with his favorite snack of either popcorn or
ROBERT F. DAUGHTRIDGE Robert F. Daughtridge, age 80, of the Mt. Hermon Community, passed away on April 2, 2015 at his residence after a brief illness. He was born March 17, 1935 in Rocky Mount, NC, the son of the late Irene B. Daughtridge and the late John E. Daughtridge of Rocky Mount, NC. He was preceded in death by three sisters; Madge T. Martin and Irene E. Winstead of Rocky Mount, NC, and Mavis B. Bennett of Dobson, NC; two brothers, Richard L. Daughtridge of Rocky Mount, NC, and CDR Gerald R. Daughtridge, USN (Ret.) of Raleigh, NC. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Nancy M. Daughtridge and two daughters: Angela Lynne Daughtridge of Hanover, PA and Kimberly Ann Daughtridge of Hampstead, MD. He is also survived by his grandson, Charles Emory Myers and wife Dr. Anna D. As a civil servant, he graduated from the U.S. Border Patrol Academy, as an expert marksman, serving as a uniformed patrol officer on the Texas and California Mexican border. He attended numerous training classes at the Federal Law Enforcement Center, Glenco, GA, the University of Maryland and Catonsville Community College in Maryland. He served as Officer-in-Charge of U.S. Immigration in Bermuda for 7 years retiring in 1990 from the Department of Justice and Naturalization Service, in Baltimore, MD as a Criminal Investigator. One of Mr. Daughtridge’s proudest achievements was becoming an Eagle Scout at a very young age. His other hobbies included flying, diving, amateur photography, clock collecting, and fishing. WILLIAM “PETE” HORACE BOSWELL Your work on this earth is done, William Horace “Pete” Boswell departed his earthly home for his heavenly home on Friday, April 3, 2015. Born September 25, 1930 in Danville, Virginia to the late George Everett and Esther Boswell. On July 22, 1951 Pete married his high school sweetheart Gay Hardy Boswell. After serving in the Air Force (1951 – 1955) at the Pentagon in Washington DC, Pete and Gay returned to Danville where he co-owned and operated his family business White Swan Laundry & Dry Cleaners. Pete was a member of the Danville Evening Lions Club. He enjoyed working on the planning committees of Green Street Reunions and the GWHS Class of 1950 reunions. Pete leaves behind two children, Steven (Cindy) Boswell of Midlothian, VA, Laura (Ricky) Davis of Ringgold, VA, three grandchildren, Andy Watts of Midlothian, VA, Steven “Buck” Boswell, Jr. of Roanoke, VA, Emily Hope Davis of Ringgold, VA, three great-grandchildren, Gracelin, Annaston and Andrew Watts, Jr. of Powhatan, VA. Born March 18, 1954 in Danville, VA, he was the son of the late Herman P. Holt, Sr. and the late Dorothy Hundley Holt. He was married to Blanche Womack Holt, who survives. In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Gary A. Holt, Jr. (Allison) of Lexington, KY and Roger D. Holt (Christina) of Knoxville, TN; five grandchildren, Sydney Holt, Gabrielle Holt, Heidi Holt, Nevaeh Holt and Jacob Holt; three sisters, Stacy Stewart of Leander, TX, Evelyn Miles (Franklin) of Alexandria, VA and Novella Cabin (Alfred) of Austin, TX; two brothers, Herman Holt, Jr. and Marvin Holt, Sr., (Shirley) both of Danville, VA and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Jean Young and Helene Harris. The family will receive friends at the residence. JUDY ANN HARRIS Judy Ann Harris, 65, of 670 Foster Road, Yanceyville, NC passed away Saturday, April 4, 2015 at the residence following a decline in health for several years. Harris was a member of Christ Community Church in Greensboro, NC. Mrs. Harris is survived by her husband, Philip Colin Harris of the residence, three daughters Tyla Schoeppner (Gary) of Stokesdale, NC, Michelle Lyman (Jimmy) of High Point, NC, Miranda Peascoe (Joey) of Greensboro, NC, one son Todd Kaufman of Stokesdale, NC, nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother Ronnie Corwin. The family will receive friends at the home, 670 Foster Road, Yanceyville, NC 27379. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. DAVID CLIFFORD DISTAD David Cliord Distad, age 70, of Danville, VA, passed away on Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born on March 16, 1945, in Hayfield, MN, to the late Cliord T. Distad and Evelyn Bauman Distad. Mr. Distad worked at Owens-Illinois and as a consultant for Emhart Glass. He was an active member of Ascension Lutheran Church where he served as Praise and Worship leader and a council member. He was a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. Most of his life was spent in the Danville area. Mr. Distad had been in declining health for the past 6 months. Also, he was a devoted father, grandfather, and husband to his high school sweetheart for 52 years. He is survived by his wife, Karen K. Distad of the residence, son: Joe Distad and his wife Robin; daughter: Dawn Wells and her husband Tommy; grandchildren: David Distad, Morgan Distad, Thomas Wells, and Hunter Wells; and sisters: Janice Moore, Mary Trom, and Judith Perala.
