DANVILLE – A tradition for 41 years, Festival in the Park, presented by Pepsi, makes its return May 15, 16 and 17 and this year, tradition will have a few new twists! “We wanted to breathe new life into Festival,” said board president Anna Pickeral. “This is a long-standing tradition in Danville and many people look forward to coming every year. This year we really focused on ways to keep the event fresh while keeping the traditions going.” Festival will feature, of course, craft vendors, tasty foods, children’s activities, business exhibitors, community service organizations and rides, and some great music while boasting a new layout and some brand new events and exhibits. “Festival in the Park started in 1974 as a small community event,” Pickeral said. “We are proud to continue showcasing the amazing talents of our community while adding some exciting activities and entertainment for the whole family to enjoy.” Some of the new highlights this year include a color run, sand sculpting, an aquatic dog competition, human foosball and more. Festival will run from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 15, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 16 and from 1 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 17. Festival in the Park would not be possible without the involvement of community sponsorships and volunteers. Sponsors include Pepsi, URW Community Federal Credit Union, Danville Distributing, Norhurst Professional Services, Danville Regional Medical Center, Danville Toyota Scion, Danville Dental Associates, Danville Parks and Recreation, Comfort Inn, Trophy and Sign Center, Burrell Bonding Company, Piedmont Security Insurance Agency, Inc., Negril, Big Sky Rents and Events, Chandler Concrete Company, Thunder Road Harley Davidson, Virginia Bank and Trust, Thunder Road Harley Davidson and Fire Safe Safety Services. Check out some of the great special events coming to this year’s Festival in the Park:

Two women met for lunch and the topic soon came around to their love lives. “Same old thing, you know.” said the married one. “How about you, Pam?” With a shy smile, Pam confessed that she’d been seeing a really attractive man. “He’s gorgeous, honestly-really well built and six feet two, with this thick blond hair-and he has his own computer consulting business, a beautiful apartment, a nice car, but the best thing about him is that he’s totally honest and sincere and straightforward with me.” “Wow!” exclaimed her friend. “How come I haven’t heard about this dreamboat until now?” “There’s one small snag,” admitted Pam with a grimace. “Ted also makes all his own dresses.”

Special to the Piedmont Shopper It’s hard for me to say nice things about Denny Hamlin because of his constant bellyaching over what NASCAR should do or not do. And such was the case Saturday night in the SpongeBob Squarepants 400 at Kansas Speedway when two separate incidents ended his night. “I think we blew a tire or something and we crashed,â€? Hamlin told SpeedwayMedia. “We got in an incident with the 88 (Dale Earnhardt Jr.) and the 9 (Sam Hornish Jr.) We were in the middle of them and the 88 came up and squeezed me into the 9. We cut a tire and were forced to pit, but we only changed left-side tires. I told Dave (Rogers, crew chief) that I thought the right sides were the only ones hurt. He didn’t see the left-side damage and we had a tire run and blew a left rear. “Then we wrecked again,â€? he added. “But we ZUHFNHG R̆ RI WXUQ IRXU DQG WKH FDXWLRQ ZDVQÂśW thrown until I nearly stopped in turn one. Just unbelievably disappointed with how long it took for that caution to come out because I was sitting dead in the middle of the race track and everyone is coming full bore because their spotters are telling them that the track is green. Luckily nobody hit us. They’ll (NASCAR) continue to monitor the situation. We’ve got to be a little more up on the switch on that one. I’m guessing what NASCAR will say.â€? Guess no longer. NASCAR stated to NBC Sports that “as soon as we saw the incident on the race track, the caution light was illuminated.â€? It was the second straight week that a Joe Gibbs driver has questioned NASCAR on how it reacts to an accident. Last week at Talladega, NASCAR did not throw a yellow when Carl Edwards got out of shape on the last lap and he expressed his frustration. Its NASCAR’s game, and if you want to play do so‌. and shut up when you’re not running good and the game is not played to your contentment. Some things never change: Jimmie Johnson’s victory in Saturday night’s rain-delayed 400-mile race at Kansas Speedway marked the seventh consecutive 1.5-mile Sprint Cup race that he or Kevin Harvick has won. Despite not having the fastest car in the race, Johnson, who won for the third time this season, used pit strategy to record his latest win. It was the same pit strategy that cost Martin Truex Jr. a potential win. Having led a race high 95 laps, Truex’s race turned into a bummer when Ricky Stenhouse Jr. crashed to bring out the yellow with 11 laps remaining in the UDFH 7UXH[ -U ZDV VLJQLÂżFDQWO\ FORVLQJ WKH JDS RQ race-leader Kevin Harvick and was faced with the decision to pit or not to pit. Pit was the decision‌and it was costly. “We should have either stayed out or took new tires,â€? said Truex Jr. “We probably did the worst thing you could have done with just getting gas only, because we ended up being the last guy with no tires. Everybody behind us had two and they ate us up on the restart. If we’d taken two, we would have been in a good position for the win. “But hindsight if 20/20,â€? he added. “Cole (Peran, FUHZ FKLHI KDV GRQH D JUHDW MRE LQ KLV ÂżUVW \HDU DV D crew chief and calling races. I just want to make sure WKDW KH GRHVQÂśW JHW KLV FRQÂżGHQFH GRZQ EHFDXVH KHÂśV been so good at it. Live and learn. He’ll learn from this race and get better next time around.â€? Live and learn dropped Truex Jr., who was poised to snap a winless streak dating back to June 2013, to a QLQWK SODFH ÂżQLVK But Truex has been a frontrunner through the VHDVRQÂśV ÂżUVW UDFHV ZLWK WRS ÂżQLVKHV LQ DOO EXW one race and sitting a career-best second in the standings. Good news for a single-car operation. It was a “could’ve, should’ve, would’veâ€? weekend for Truex Jr.

In verses giving dates 1,010 years apart, the song laments all that man has lost due to technology and by taking everything that Earth has -- and whether God is going to be pleased. LIFEPOINT HOSPITALS BECOMES LIFEPOINT HEALTH New name reflects company’s evolution from hospital operator to provider of comprehensive healthcare services Brentwood, Tenn., May 11, 2015 – LifePoint Hospitals® (NASDAQ: LPNT), a leading company focused on providing quality healthcare close to home, today announced that it is changing its name to LifePoint Health to reflect its evolution from a community hospital operator to a healthcare company addressing comprehensive needs across the continuum of care. This change coincides with the company’s 16th anniversary. “LifePoint was founded in 1999 with the mission of Making Communities Healthier,” said William F. Carpenter III, chairman and chief executive officer of LifePoint Health. “In the 16 years since our founding, we have focused on providing quality care close to home. As the needs of our communities have grown and evolved, so has our company. We began by operating community hospitals and, today, our operations have expanded to include physician practices, post-acute services, outpatient services, and wellness and prevention programs that enhance the health and wellbeing of those we serve. Our new name is a fitting reflection of our strategic direction for the future.” LifePoint Health operates facilities in more than 60 communities in 20 states, including several regional health systems. In addition to its more than 60 hospitals, it owns and operates: • More than 1,100 physician practices; • Nearly 40 post-acute service providers and facilities, including home health and hospice services, long-term care services, nursing homes and assisted living facilities; • More than 30 outpatient centers, including urgent care centers, diagnostic imaging centers, ambulatory surgery centers, and radiation oncology programs. The company also maintains relationships with more than 4,100 physicians in its communities. Additionally, LifePoint Health collaborates with and supports community organizations, employers and educational institutions that share its dedication to making communities healthier. This includes partnerships with regional employers to create wellness and occupational health programs, and regional prevention and outreach programs to engage and educate members of its communities. The company’s Tennessee headquarters, known as the LifePoint Health Support Center to reflect its support of providers and partners across many healthcare and community settings, is home to more than 500 professionals with expertise in every aspect of healthcare operations, including quality care and patient safety, clinical operations, regulatory compliance, government relations and information technology. This multidisciplinary team provides support and resources to LifePoint system providers, allowing them to navigate the changing healthcare environment, strengthen their services and operations, and prosper. As its name changes, LifePoint’s mission, vision, values and guiding principles remain the same. The company’s commitment to delivering quality care, growing in both existing and new communities, operating efficiently and cost-effectively, and setting standards of excellence in every facet of leadership and operations will not waver. LifePoint Health will continue to be listed on NASDAQ under its current ticker symbol, LPNT. About LifePoint Health LifePoint Health (NASDAQ: LPNT) is a leading healthcare company dedicated to Making Communities Healthier®. Through its subsidiaries, it provides quality inpatient, outpatient and post-acute services close to home. LifePoint owns and operates community hospitals, regional health systems, physician practices, outpatient centers, and post-acute facilities in 20 states. How To Choose A Builder Whether the kids have all grown up and moved out or if the kids are on the way and it’s time to expand a living area, building a new home is an exciting, yet often agonizing, experience. The reasons for building a new home are many, but regardless of the reason, the process of choosing a builder should remain the same. Andrew Nadalin, president of Pace 2000 Inc. and a fourth generation builder and craftsmen, offers the following advice to prospective homeowners with their eyes set on building a dream home to call their own. * Look for a builder with a solid reputation. A builder’s reputation speaks volumes, but it doesn’t have to speak for istself. That’s because a builder who has spent years providing personal service, innovative design and quality workmanship will no doubt have a host of happy former customers ready and willing to offer their input. If during the interview process a builder appears reticent to share his work or experiences with previous customers, this should be a red flag. Reputable builders will be proud of their work and more than willing to show it off. * Find a builder who is flexible. You will be paying to build your home, not the builder’s home. A builder should be flexible and ready and willing to meet your needs, no matter how unique they might be. * Look for a builder who does more than build. A good builder should do more than just build. A builder should provide a network of qualified professionals to make the process go more smoothly. This network should include real estate and building consultants, interior designers, architects and engineers. Such connections can provide peace of mind and will also illustrate that a builder is both respected in the community and is intent on ensuring your home becomes the dream home you envision it to be. * Don’t build on the cheap. Buyers who plan to build their own home are in the unique position to ensure their home is as safe and high-quality as possible. This isn’t always the case when buying a resale, so make the most of your opportunity and use only top-of-the-line construction materials and features and choose a builder with experience in working with such materials and features. Building on the cheap could prove disastrous in the not too distant future, so don’t sacrifice on quality when building a new home.

Jeff Bridges in “Seventh Son PICKS OF THE WEEK

“Seventh Son (PG-13) -- An ancient order of mystical knights once kept the world safe from evil CGI monstrosities, until their numbers dwindled to one. Jeff Bridges stars as the last of the “Spooks, monster slayers who are all the seventh sons of seventh sons. Bridges rambles his way to a little farm, where he recruits Tom, youngest of seven brothers (a bland teenage protagonist played by Ben Barnes, who is well into his 30s). Together, they set out on a formulaic adventure to battle a superwitch (Julianne Moore) and her menagerie of monsters. Much like Moore’s archvillain character, this fantasy adventure was sealed away, locked in a purgatory by production wizards, until it stirred within its cage and found its way into our realm. The special effects are impressive, but aging in the barrel has not helped this film ripen.

“Cut Bank (R) -- Tucked away in rural Montana, Dwayne (Liam Hemsworth) wants to get himself and his peppy blond girlfriend (Teresa Palmer) out of town, but witnesses a murder instead. By total coincidence, he had his video camera rolling and pointed in the right direction when the town’s first murder takes place in a canola field. Well, maybe it wasn’t a coincidence, and maybe it wasn’t a murder -- the plot twists itself into knots, but it’s not a tight fit. The movie owes a lot to the Coen brothers, mostly an apology for doing such a poor job of copying “Fargo. “See You in Valhalla (R) -- A death in the family reunites a bunch of dysfunctional siblings. At first it’s awkward, then they bicker, fight, laugh, hug and cry. This should sound familiar by now -- it’s been the drama-trope of choice for the past year or so. This time, it’s “Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland playing the prodigal daughter, returning home for the funeral of her troubled brother. Her father and two living brothers are waiting with their own bundles of issues, and she also must deal with the latent drama of an old boyfriend she left behind. It’s supposed to be a tearjerker drama, so it’s a bad sign that the only laudable bit is the cartoonish comic relief (Stevie Howey), but kudos to him.

“The Loft (R) -- Five wealthy urban professionals share a luxurious loft apartment as their secret clubhouse, available whenever one of them has a rendezvous with a mistress or fling. One day, the guys open the loft to find the handcuffed body of a murdered blonde, totally killing the mood. The story is told in flashbacks, as the guys (Karl Urban, James Marsden, Eric Stonestreet, Matthias SchoenTV RELEASES aerts and Wentworth Miller) recount what happened -- in “The Nanny: The Complete Series sleazy detail -- to a pair of “Major Crimes: Season 3 detectives. “Ray Donovan: Season 2 Nothing tests the patience “The Wonder Years: Season more than a movie full of 3 tedious plot twists and setups all building to a tragically “The Rockford Files: Movie Collection -- Volume 2 predictable conclusion. The five dudes are so greasy and unlikable that it’s a struggle to (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc. feel for their struggles.

Congratulations!!!

Congratulations to Jasmyne Warren for receiving the Defensive Player of the Year trophy from the George Washington High School Girls JV Basketball Team during the school banquet.

The 434 Elite Ballers played in the 5th Annual Mothers Day Madness tournament held in High Point NC this weekend on May 10, 2015. They did a remarkable job as they won first place. This makes it their 4th Tournament Championship this year out of 5 tournaments played. This is a great accomplishment for these young men and the 434. Once again I’m proud to be apart of a team of hard working young men. To my team I say keep that chip on your shoulder and show everyone you are real. Especially the ones who don’t believe in you and the ones who mistreated you - Also the ones who didn’t give you a chance.
