Memorial Day • May 25th, 2015 THANK YOU!!

The history of Memorial Day Though many people are quick to refer to Memorial Day as the unofficial beginning of summer, the day is much more than that. Initially known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day is a day to remember those military members who died in service of the country. The origins of Memorial Day remain a topic of debate. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, N.Y. as the official birthplace of Memorial Day. However, the roots of Memorial Day likely run much deeper, as researchers at Duke University note that during the Civil War, organized women’s groups in the south had begun to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers. Memorial Day as we know it today can likely be traced to Charleston, S.C., where teachers, missionaries and some members of the press gathered on May 1, 1865 to honor fallen soldiers. During the Civil War, captured Union soldiers were held at the Charleston Race Course and hundreds died during captivity. Upon their deaths, soldiers were buried in unmarked graves. When the Civil War ended, the May Day gathering was organized as a memorial to all the men who had died during captivity. The burial ground was landscaped, and those freed as a result of the Civil War played an integral role in the event at the Charleston Race Course. While the event in Charleston might have been the first Memorial Day-type celebration in the southern United States, General John A. Logan is often cited as inspiring similar events in the north. As commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, a veterans’ organization for men who served in the Civil War, General Logan issued a proclamation just five days after the Charleston event that called for Decoration Day to be observed annually across the country. Logan preferred the event not be held on the anniversary of any particular battle, and thus the day was observed for the first time on May 30. Celebrating the day in May also was significant to event organizers because May is a month when flowers are in bloom, making it easier for observers of the holiday to place flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers. n 1868, events were held at more than 180 cemeteries in 27 states, and those figures nearly doubled in 1869. By 1890, every northern state officially recognized Decoration Day as a state holiday. But southern states honored their dead on a different day until after World War I, when the holiday was changed to recognize Americans who died in any war and not just the Civil War. Nearly every state now celebrates Memorial Day, a name for the holiday first used in 1882, on the last Monday in May.

The Danville Museum of Fine Arts & History and BB&T hosted the Middle and High School Solo Festival on Friday, May 15, 2015, at 6:00 pm. Twelve students played a variety of classical pieces on their instrument of choice before awards were given out. Jonathan Lawton, a senior at Westover Christian Academy, was declared the first place winner in the high school division and was given high marks for his saxophone performance of Concerto for Eb Alto Saxophone and Piano by Creston. He was accompanied in his performance by Mr. Donnie Davis, Band Director for Westover. Jonathan is the son of Sandra Parker & Stan Lawton. He has been in band since fifth grade and has participated in Concert, Marching, Jazz, and Pep Band. He has also served as Drum Major for the past three years. In addition to his musical accomplishments, Jonathan has excelled in the classroom and plans to continue his education at Averett University in the fall. Congratulations to Jonathan and all of the students who participated in the solo festival!

A sweet grandmother telephoned St. Michael‘s Hospital. She timidly asked, “Is it possible to speak to someone who can tell me how a patient is doing?” The operator said, “I’ll be glad to help, dear. What’s the name and room number of the patient?” The grandmother in her weak, tremulous voice said, “Norma O’Riley, Room 302.” The operator replied, “Let me put you on hold while I check with the nurse’s station for that room.” After a few minutes, the operator returned to the phone and said , “I have good news. Her nurse just told me that Norma is doing well. Her blood pressure is fine; her blood work just came back normal, and her physician, Dr. Andrews, has scheduled her to be discharged tomorrow.” The grandmother said,”Thank you. That’s wonderful. I was so worried. God bless you for the good news.” The operator replied, “You’re more than welcome. Is Norma your daughter?” The grandmother said,”No, I’m Norma O’Riley in Room 302. No one tells me anything.”

Special to the Piedmont Shopper What used to be an event that represented something special is now no different than any other race on the NASCAR schedule. And that’s a shame. NASCAR’s All-Star Race has long been advertised as an event where winning is all that matters, but Saturday night’s race at Charlotte Motor Speedway was a reminder that something needs to be fixed. It was boring from start to finish. Now days each and every race is a must-win affair and a win during the regular season guarantees a driver a spot in the Chase. The lagging question is how does one go about a fix? The answer is not simple. The All-Star Race has become rather sedate. Fireworks have been added to spice up the drama that once was the trademark of an All-Star Race. NASCAR’s aerodynamic package where cars easily and quickly spread out have made passing unlimited. Clean air is everything, and whichever driver gets the jump on restarts has an overwhelming advantage on the field. Over the past five All-Star events only once has there been a lead change in the final segment. You would think that racing for a million dollars lead changes and three-wide racing would be the order of the night. Not so anymore. Every driver in Saturday night’s 20-car field is a multi-millionaire, some many times over. When the one-car, mom-and-pop operations were around, money mattered, and a driver would run over his own grandmother to win a million dollars. To NASCAR’s credit, they’ve attempted to fix the slide of the All-Star Race with a new format in the final segment, which is based on the average finish in each of the first four segments of the race. And a new qualifying format which allowed drivers to race down pit road wide open without a penalty was added, but those wrinkles have failed to restore the race to its glory of past years. And barring something that similar to a miracle, it will continue to be the same. The Chase, the lucky dog, wave-a-rounds, green-white checker finishes, debris cautions with five laps to go, update every five minutes on Danica Patrick and the boogity boogity boogity starts have turned once what was an exciting sport into an afternoon soap opera. Denny Hamlin played the chess game to perfection Saturday night and easily won the $1 million prize. Once he got the jump on the field in the final 10-lap segment and took the advantage of clean air, the prize was his. Not to be critical of Hamlin, but clean air is king in NASCAR. In the new era of NASCAR racing that’s the case. When the lead car seizes the lead and has clean air on its nose, it had a tremendous advantage in downforce, and the secondplace car doesn’t have enough downforce to pass. “Aero means so much with these cars nowadays that the person out front just has a huge advantage,” Hamlin said in a NASCAR news release. And that was the case Saturday night. When Kevin Harvick got to Hamlin’s bumper in Turn One with three laps to go he hit a wall of dirty air and couldn’t complete the pass, thanks to a rule package that tilts the advantage heavily towards whomever is leading. One fix is to move the event away from Charlotte Motor Speedway. One-and-a-half-mile tracks do not produce close, side-by-side, lap-afterlap racing which everyone expects from an event that matches the best of the best in NASCAR racing. Rotate the event each year between the three short tracks currently on the NASCAR schedule – Bristol, Martinsville and Richmond. Secondly, eliminate some of the rules that have ruined the sport rather than help. Put racing back in the hands of the crew chiefs and let them call the shots rather than computers, and that way racing may have a chance.

“The Impossible Quest” I get angry at him, oh, so frequently. I have worked on him; punishing, lecturing, praying, cajoling, encouraging, and yet I can never seem to fully achieve my desired results with him. No, he is not a monster, but he certainly is imperfect. And that imperfection gnaws at me, kidnaps my thoughts; I take it intensely personal. I suppose I should, for he is me. Growing up I always assumed that men of God had everything together, and thus were free to spend all their time straightening out others. They were the perfect husbands, the perfect fathers, the perfect preachers, the perfect friends. I suppose I should have paid more attention as I read my Bible; men like Peter and Elijah and Moses were certainly not perfect, so how could I expect lesser men to be so? It may sound unrealistic, but I really do want to be perfect. I simply hate it when my words do not come out right, or when I forget something I was supposed to be doing for someone, or when I unintentionally hurt someone. Yes, I know that absolutely everyone does every single one of those things, but I want to be the one who doesn’t. I want every column to be perfectly thought out, with both the right facts and the right spirit. I want every

message I preach to be accurate, powerful, and compassionate. I want to always be everything my family and my church members need me to be. And yet, despite my desire and my best efforts, logic and a good study of Scripture tell me that I will never fully achieve my desires. The great apostle Paul said, “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.” For all of us, man of God or man of factory or woman of politics or whatever gender and whatever roll, there will somehow have to be a balance struck if we are going to survive. Yes, we surely must do our best at absolutely all times. 1 Corinthians 10:31 says, “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” Ecclesiastes 9:10 says, “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might.” Anything less than our best effort dishonors the Lord. The other side of that equation, the thing that gives the balance we need, is a realization of what we are, and also an understanding of the opportunity it affords

us. By what we are, I am hearkening back to the truth of Psalm 103:14, which says, “For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.” As creatures of dust, and fallen creatures at that, we will not be perfect, it is impossible. Strive for it, yes, but only because the higher you aim, the better you do. If God knows our frame, if he does not expect perfection from us, then we are free to not pressure ourselves by demanding more of us that he does. By the opportunity it affords us, I am thinking of what our imperfection allows us to do that perfection never could; lean on the Lord, make things right, and try again. Our imperfections allow us to say words like “I am sorry” and “I was wrong” and “Would you please forgive me?” It makes us accessible. It shows humility. It turns a negative into a positive.

So do yourself a favor; lighten up. Do your best, yes. But when you fail, rather than beating yourself to death over it, make it right, brush yourself off, and try again. And it may just be that one day you are able to return the favor by reminding me of the exact same thing!

Local Law Enforcement Heroes Remembered The Annual Peace Officers Memorial Service was Held On Tuesday May 12th at the Chatham Baptist Church. It concluded with a candle Light vigil at the Police Memorial Beside the Court House in Chatham. The special Guest Speaker was Retired Roanoke Police Officer, Bryan Lawrence who was attacked by a suspect in 2008 while he was trying to aprehend him. Bryan was left paralyzed from the attack. He is now a minister in a church in Roanoke. Fallen Officers honored during the service were from : Danville Police Dept., Danville Sheriff’s Office, Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office and the Virginia State Police. Photo Credits: Jeffery Gunnell

Lee Barker holds a candle during the vigil. Lee is the son of Fallen Officer Terry Barker of the PCSO.

Show Your Appreciation To The Law Enforcement Community

Special Guest Speaker and Former Roanoke Police Officer, Bryan Lawrence Thank You To The Local Law Enforcement Agencies As Well As All Other Public Service Officials Throughout Our Community!

When private citizens come into contact with law enforcement, that contact is not always made under ideal circumstances. While keeping order, law enforcement personnel must write citations or take action when anyone violates the law. However, enforcing the law involves much more than simply writing tickets or making arrests. Officers and agents are on the side of the public and are often the first people men, women and children look to when they need help. Law enforcement professionals are often taken for granted. But it’s never too late to thank a police officer for his or her efforts. The following are several ways to express appreciation to local law enforcement in your community. · Wear and display blue. Many law enforcement workers are known for their blue uniforms. Blue usually represents police and other upholders of the law. Proudly display blue ribbons, blue lights or flags on homes and businesses. Wear blue shirts or law enforcement-inspired insignia to public or high-profile events as a token of appreciation for local law enforcement. · Thank an officer. Approach an officer in person and offer some words of thanks. Law enforcement is often a thankless job, and many officers do not get the recognition they deserve. A few kind words of support may be all that is needed to brighten their day. · Schedule a tour. Many police departments are more than willing to offer tours to youth groups, such as schools, scouting organizations and clubs. Giving children an insider look at the daily operations of a police department or other law enforcement office can be a positive moment in their lives. Children can learn at an early age how law enforcement works and what it means to be a good citizen. · Obey the law. One of the best ways to show respect for law enforcement officers is to obey the law. Should you be called out for an infraction, treat the officer or agent politely and comply with his or her requests. · Share a positive story. Use social media or your networking connections to share a story of how law enforcement helped you or did something worth noting. · Help out an officer. Oftentimes local businesses will provide discounted costs to officers or other law enforcement workers as a means of thanking them for their efforts. Such gestures may seem simple, but they are much appreciated. Anyone can do their part to show appreciation to the men and women who wear the uniform and keep our communities safe.

Tater Tot Casserole Ingredients: 1 1/2 lb ground round 1/2 cup chopped onion 1 cup frozen peas, thawed (or 14.5 oz can French-style green beans, drained) whichever you prefer 1 1/2 tablespoons gluten-free Worcestershire sauce 1 tablespoon chili powder 2 teaspoons sugar 2 teaspoons cornstarch 3/4 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon pepper 32 oz package frozen potato tots *Ore-Ida Tater Tots are a gluten free brand (but always double check in case ingredient lists change!) 8 oz package of shredded cheese (any kind you prefer) Directions: 1. Brown ground round and onion in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat 8 to 10 minutes, stirring to crumble; drain well. 2. Stir in peas, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, sugar, cornstarch, salt and pepper. 3. Pour mixture into a lightly greased 13×9-inch baking dish. 4. Add a layer of cheese and then top evenly with tots. 5. Bake in preheated oven, at 350 degrees for 45 minutes, to 1 hour or until thoroughly heated and tots are golden. 6. Serve and enjoy! This is an excellent make ahead and freeze meal. If you’re making one or 2 extra pans to freeze for later, use these instructions. 1. Follow instructions 1 and 2 above. 2. Then, line a 13×9-inch baking dish with heavy-duty nonstick aluminum foil, allowing several inches of foil to extend over sides. 3. Pour mixture into prepared dish; add a layer of cheese and then top evenly with tots. 4. Cover and freeze 2 to 3 hours or until firm 5. Remove from baking dish by holding edges of foil; fold foil over casserole. 6. Wrap in additional foil, making sure it is tightly sealed. 7. Freeze up to 1 month. 8. To serve, thaw in refrigerator overnight. 9. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 10. Place foil-wrapped casserole in a lightly greased 13×9-inch baking dish. 11. Uncover top, and bake 45 minutes to 1 hour or until thoroughly heated and tots are golden.

They wrote the disco hit with the intention of performing it, but owners of their record company tried to insist they give the song to a more established artist and that M&W hang back as house songwriters instead. They refused. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Some insulations can lose performance over time, sustain damage or simply no longer meet updated building codes. It’s an issue that can be costly, because if your home’s insulation isn’t doing its job, you could be wasting money and resources. You don’t have to be a trained professional to know you have a problem. Here are several signs that your insulation is lacking: 1. Energy bills — High energy bills are the biggest red flag, especially relative to the size, age or condition of the home. If you have a run-away energy bill, your insulation may need to be upgraded. This can be the case, even in a newer home. 2. Drafts — Do you need to put on a sweater even with the heat on, or does your air conditioner run incessantly without making enough of a difference? That’s a sign of a deficiency in your building envelope. 3. Inconsistent temperatures — Is it warm in one room, but cold in another? Are your walls or interior closets cold to the touch? It’s possible that while your whole home may not need attention, certain rooms may need to be addressed. 4. Condition of insulating materials — Consider the age of your insulation. Would it stand up to today’s building codes? Is it in good shape or is it crumbly? If your insulation has degraded or isn’t performing, it’s time for an upgrade. But be careful, as certain types of older insulation, such as Vermiculite insulation, may contain asbestos. If you’re unsure, do not disturb it and hire a professional to conduct testing and/or removal. This should not be a do-it-yourself job. 5. You detect pests and/or moisture — Insulation — and your building envelope — can be compromised by the presence of pests. Moisture is an even bigger obstacle to optimal thermal performance, as some types of insulation can sag or collapse when damp, leaving voids and causing air to flow in and out of the building envelope. While some solutions may be more complicated, requiring the opening of the existing wall cavities, others can be addressed more easily. The best way to improve thermal performance and increase energy efficiency is to upgrade attic insulation. Laying Comfortbatt insulation over existing material to achieve a minimum depth of 16 inches, or an R-value of R50, is a simple DIY project that can generate immediate results. To fully assess your home and explore remediation solutions, consider hiring a professional home energy auditor to evaluate your home’s energy performance. Even in a new home, the results may be surprising.

Photography Studio Locates to the River District Danville, Va. – Bobby Carlsen Photography today announced its plans to locate to the Atrium Building at 312 Main St. in the River District. Carlsen, an international awardwinning photographer, has served the Southern Virginia and greater Piedmont regions for over 10 years and offers comprehensive photography and design services for businesses, and portraiture for newborns, children, high school seniors, and families. “Relocating to the River District has been a key component of our longterm plans for the past few years,” said Carlsen. “It strategically positions our company in the heart of Danville’s rapidly growing professional area and will help us foster stronger relationships within our community, especially for clients of our commercial photography division. Our portrait clients will also enjoy enhanced services and experiences due to both the location and unique characteristics of the space.” Corrie Teague, assistant director for the Office of Economic Development, explained that the City’s development plan was to fill not only street level storefronts, but all floors of buildings in the River District, noting the positive outcomes they can have on lower floor tenants. “We are thrilled that Bobby decided to locate his studio to the River District,” said Teague. “This project will bring clients into the River District that might not have frequented this area before. We anticipate that the street level restaurants and retailers will directly benefit from the traffic that this studio and other upper floor businesses will generate.” The new 3,500 square-foot, multi-level studio has a Main Street entrance and will include a reception area, galleries, a traditional strobe-light photography room, offices, a cathedral skylight atrium, and a large floor-to-ceiling natural light photography room on the building’s third floor. “We are especially excited about our renovations of the Atrium building,” added Carlsen. “Its architecture, design and beautiful arching Main Street windows are an exceptional fit for our studio, which will feature several gallery areas including one showcasing the history of the building and lower Main Street. We have taken great care to retain the character and charm of the space and now residents will be able to better appreciate one of Main Street’s most beautiful buildings.” In addition to operating his studio full time, Carlsen is an educator and popular speaker regularly contracted to address other professional photographers at conventions and meetings around the nation. He is actively involved in several professional organizations, and is an area coordinator for the non-profit organization Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep. Carlsen plans to open the studio this summer. Details of the ribbon cutting ceremony will soon follow. For more information about Bobby Carlsen Photography visit www.bobbycarlsen.com or contact the studio at studio@bobbycarlsen.com or (434) 836-6042.

LUNCH TO FEATURE VIRGINIA’s SECRETARY OF COMMERCE & TRADE Secretary Jones to Kick off Business Appreciation Week for Region The Honorable Maurice Jones, Virginia’s Secretary of Commerce and Trade, will speak at a lunch meeting on Monday, June 1, at 11:30 a.m. at the Institute for Advanced Learning & Research (150 Slayton Avenue, Danville). The event, which is sponsored by the Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce, is open to the community. In his role as Secretary, Jones oversees the economic, community, and workforce development of the Commonwealth. Each of the 13 commerce and trade agencies actively contributes to Virginia’s economic health and high quality of life. Jones’ remarks will kick off Business Appreciation Week in Danville and Pittsylvania County. The cost of the lunch is $25 for Chamber members and $30 for non-members. Reservations are required and should be made by calling the Chamber at (434) 836-6990, by emailing the Chamber at chamber@dpchamber.org, or by registering online at www.dpchamber.org. Jones was appointed Secretary of Commerce and Trade by Governor Terry McAuliffe in January 2014. Previously, he served as Deputy Secretary for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development from April 2012 through January 2014. As the second most senior official at HUD, Jones managed the Department’s day-to-day operations, the annual operating budget, and the agency’s 8,900 employees. Prior to HUD, Jones was President of Pilot Media, the largest print and digital organization in Hampton Roads, Virginia. Jones joined Landmark Media Enterprises, owner of Pilot Media, in 2005, serving as Vice President of the Landmark Publishing Group, consisting of multiple newspapers, including the News & Record in Greensboro, NC; The Roanoke Times; The Capital Gazette in Annapolis, MD; and Landmark Community Newspapers, Inc., based in Shelbyville, KY. In 2006, Jones became the Vice President and General Manager of Pilot Media, and in 2008 he became President and Publisher of The Virginian-Pilot, the locally owned and managed newspaper founded in 1865. A Kenbridge, Virginia native, Jones also served as Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Social Services and Deputy Chief of Staff to then-Virginia Governor Mark Warner. At the U.S. Treasury Department, Jones was Special Assistant to the General Counsel and he also served as Legal Counsel to the Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI) Fund and as Director of the Fund during the Clinton Administration. Jones also worked for the law firm of Hunton & Williams in Richmond, Virginia and he was a Partner at Venture Philanthropy Partners, a firm that invests millions in the Washington, DC metropolitan area to assist lowincome children. Jones received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Hampden-Sydney College and attended Oxford University in England on a Rhodes scholarship, where he received a Master of Philosophy in International Relations. He later received a Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia. Business Appreciation Week is being celebrated in Danville and Pittsylvania County from May 31 – June 6, 2016. With a tagline of “Thank you for choosing to grow here,” the region is planning events to show appreciation to businesses that have chosen to locate, invest, and grow in the region. During Business Appreciation Week we acknowledge the companies that diversify and enhance the industry of Danville and Pittsylvania County. Business Appreciation Week is being sponsored by the City of Danville Economic Development, Pittsylvania County, and the Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce.
