HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!!!

Sunday, May 10th, 2015

Appreciate YO MAMA! Explore the ways to show you care this Mother’s Day Mother’s Day is the one day each year when men, women and children across the country gather to honor the mothers in their lives. Though it can be challenging to find new and unique ways to display your affection for Mom on Mother’s Day, rest assured that sometimes the simplest concepts are the ones mothers most appreciate. This year, look no further than the following ideas for some inspiration as you aim to make this Mother’s Day as special as possible for the mother or mothers in your life. • Give the gift of sweet treats. What better way to highlight mom’s sweetness than with some delicious treats made just for her? Whether you decide to whip up some homemade confections in the kitchen or visit a nearby store for something decadent, mom will no doubt appreciate the chance to indulge on her big day. Moms who prefer cookies and portable snacks will no doubt enjoy Pocky and Péjoy biscuit sticks. These tasty snacks from Gilco are dipped or filled with popular flavors, such as chocolate and strawberry, and are now available with green tea cream. Pair with a cup of tea, coffee or whichever beverage mom prefers to complement her favorite treat. Pocky is available in most grocery stores, and can typically be found in the Asian food section. • Make a meal to remember. Mom deserves a night off from dinner detail, and while dining out is an option, a homemade meal may come across as more intimate and heartfelt. Thanks to kitchen appliances that make it easier than ever to prepare gourmet meals at home, you can now make restaurant-style meals in your kitchen without sacrificing restaurant-quality taste. For example, new tacook Rice Cookers from Tiger Corporation do more than just perfectly steam rice. They also incorporate synchro-cooking to cook two different items at once. Present mom with her favorite Asian-inspired poultry-and-rice dish or use the cooker to easily bake bread or steam a side of vegetables. Pair the meal with her favorite wine and make sure you handle all the cleanup. While mom waits for dinner to be served, a soothing cup of tea can set the tone for a relaxing evening. The Tiger Hot Water Kettle boils water in seconds. With three temperature settings and a de-chlorination cycle for removing chemical tastes and odors, the kettle allows mom to quickly enjoy a cup of her favorite brew. These kitchen essentials are available at Bed, Bath and Beyond. • Plan a Mother’s Day picnic. Busy moms may look forward to a break from the bustle of daily routines. An afternoon picnicking outdoors can be the ideal way to enjoy a special Mother’s Day. Plan an easy menu of foods that have portability. It’s easy to transport hot or cold foods when you have Tiger Stainless Steel Thermal Wares on hand. A refreshing fruit salad can be kept cool for about 8 hours. If mom prefers pasta primavera, the thermal container can keep it warm and ready until it’s time to enjoy. Gifting is made easy when you tap into the things mom likes. Learn more about these gift ideas and more at www.pocky.com and http://usa.tiger-corporation. com.

And that’s how the fight got started. My wife and I were watching “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire while we were in bed. I turned to her and said, “Do you want to make love? “No, she answered. I then said, “Is that your final answer? She didn’t even look at me this time, and simply said, “Yes. So I said, “Then I’d like to phone a friend. And that’s how the fight got started.

434 ELITE BALLERS These young men are Awesome! Playing in their 4th tournament this year, the 434 Elite Ballers won the 2015 Advocate / Man-Up tournament on May 2, 2015. They played in an older division and they held their own. These young men are becoming winners on and o the court, which that make’s me proud to be their coach. All I can say is, let’s keep putting the 434 on the map.

Saturday morning I got up early, quietly dressed, made my lunch, and slipped quietly into the garage. I hooked up the boat up to the van and proceeded to back out into a torrential downpour. The wind was blowing 50 mph, so I pulled back into the garage, turned on the radio and discovered that the weather would be bad all day. I went back into the house, quietly undressed and slipped back into bed. I cuddled up to my wife’s back, now with a dierent anticipation and whispered, “The weather out there is terrible.â€? My loving wife of 5 years replied, “Can you believe my stupid husband is out fishing in that?â€? And that’s how the fight got started. I rear-ended a car this morning. So, there we were alongside the road and slowly the other driver got out of his car. You know how sometimes you just get so stressed and little things just seem funny? Well it struck me as funny that the other guy was a dwarf. He stormed over to my car, looked up at me and shouted, “I am not happy!â€? So, I looked down at him and said, “Well, then which one are you? Grumpy?â€? And that’s how the fight got started. My wife was hinting about what she wanted for our upcoming anniversary. She said, “I want something shiny that goes from 0 to 150 in about 3 seconds.â€? I bought her a bathroom scale. And that’s how the fight got started. When I got home last night, my wife demanded that I take her some place expensive. So, I took her to a Gas station. And that’s how the fight got started. My wife and I were sitting at a table at my school reunion and I kept staring at a drunken lady swigging her drink as she sat alone at a nearby table. My wife asked, “Do you know her?â€? “Yes,â€? I sighed, “She’s my old girlfriend. I understand she took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago and I hear she hasn’t been sober since.â€? “My Goodness!â€? says my wife, “Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?â€? And that’s how the fight got started. I took my wife to a restaurant. The waiter, for some reason took my order first. “I’ll have the steak, medium rare, please.â€? He said, “Aren’t you worried about the mad cow?â€? “Nah, she can order for herself.â€? And that’s how the fight got started. A woman was standing nude, looking in the bedroom mirror. She was not happy with what she saw and said to her husband, “I feel horrible; I look old, fat and ugly. I really need you to pay me a compliment.â€? The husband replied, “Your eyesight’s dang near perfect.â€? And that’s how the fight got started.

12 year old Jacob Korteum will travel with his family this week to Hawaii, thanks to the efforts of the Danville and Lynchburg Sun Tan City stores and the Make A Wish Foundation. Jacob has an incurable tumor disorder, Neurofibromatosis Type 1. This condition causes multiple tumors to form throughout the body. Jacob has undergone two neurosurgeries to remove tumors on his head and within his spine, so far all tumors have been non-cancerous. Jacob’s mom, Heather, expresses sincere gratitude towards those who have made this possible. “These people didn’t even know my babies, and they chose to do this for us.” There are currently over 200 children in Virgina waiting for a wish. If you want more information about how to grant these children their wishes, contact Chris Williams, Corporate Development Officer for Greater Virginia Make A Wish at 804-217-9474 or cwilliams@va.wish.org, or visit www.va.wish.org.

I awake each morning to start a new day but the pain of losing you never goes away. I go about the things I have to do and as the hours pass I think again of you. I want to call you and just hear your voice. Then I remember that I have no choice. For you are not there and now my heart cries just to see you again to tell you goodbye. To say Mama I love you and I always will and hope that much of you, in me you instilled. The day that you were going where I couldn’t go. And now all my memories of you are so dear. But gosh, how I miss you and wish you were here. Who now can hear me when I need to cry? It’s so hard to tell you “Mama goodbye. Someday I know all will be well, and I’ll see you again with stories to tell. Oh how you are missed. Until then my memories of you I’ll keep near and I’ll pass them on to those who are dear. Sadly Missing You Mama!

1. What singersongwriter wrote his 1977 “Jeans On after its initial success as a television commercial for Brutus Jeans? 2. Who wrote and recorded “Next Door to an Angel, “Love Will Keep Us Together and “Bad Blood? 3. Who released “Whispers (Gettin’ Louder)? 4. In 1963, “I Want to Hold Your Hand was the a-side single. What was on the b-side? Who cut the record? 5. Name the song that contains this lyric: “When we met I was sure out to lunch, Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch. Answers: 1. British musician David Dundas. The song was his biggest hit. 2. Neil Sedaka. It was “Bad Blood that revived his career in 1975. 3. Jackie Wilson, in 1966. 4. “This Boy, by the Beatles. 5. “Along Comes Mary, by the Association in 1966. The song was written by Tandyn Almer and is about marijuana, not a girl named Mary. No one-hit wonder, Almer wrote volumes of music with sophisticated lyrics, a fact that has been discovered since his death two years ago. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Lemon Chicken With Asparagus KITCHEN DIVA By Angela Shelf Medearis and Gina Harlow Asparagus Is Perfect for Spring Recipes --Nothing says spring is here like a beautiful bunch of crisp asparagus. While asparagus is available year-round, it’s much better when purchased locally. Asparagus is easy to select and prepare, and comes in a variety of vibrant colors, including green, violet, purple and white. It is commercially available fresh, frozen and canned. The stalks range in size from colossal to small. Different types and colors of asparagus can be used without any noticeable difference in taste, so mix and match colors and sizes for visual interest. Asparagus should be crisp and firm, not limp or wrinkled, with tightly closed tips. Dull colors and ridges in the stems are an indication of a lack of freshness. The stalks should not be limp or dry at the cut and be of uniform thickness. If you’re planning to use the asparagus on the same day, rinse the stalks under cool water and pat dry with a paper towel. Smaller stalks can be broken or cut at the point where the stem naturally snaps. Peeling the end of thicker stalks with a paring knife or a vegetable peeler removes any woody stems and can be done up to 2 hours before cooking. Place the prepared asparagus in a plastic bag in the refrigerator to stay crisp until ready to cook. Never wash or soak fresh asparagus before storing. If the asparagus is bound with a rubber band, remove it, as it will pinch and bruise the stalks. Asparagus can be stored for up to two days if the stalks are trimmed and placed upright in a jar with about an inch of water in the bottom. Cover the asparagus with a plastic bag and store in the refrigerator. Asparagus cooks in minutes and can be prepared steamed or boiled in the microwave or oven. It tastes delicious hot or cold, and it also freezes well if blanched first in hot water. Asparagus is a nutritional powerhouse. One-half cup of cooked asparagus contains significant amounts of folic acid, vitamin C, potassium and beta-carotene. It’s also a hearthealthy food, and a natural diuretic. This versatile vegetable works well as a room-temperature appetizer, blended into a soup, as a flavorful side dish, the main ingredient in a colorful salad or as part of a main course like my recipe for Lemon Chicken With Asparagus. Preparing asparagus is a delicious and nutritious way to celebrate spring. LEMON CHICKEN WITH ASPARAGUS 4 chicken breasts, about 3 pounds, washed and fat trimmed and removed 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon pepper 1 1/2 teaspoons poultry seasoning 4 garlic cloves, chopped 1 red bell pepper, chopped 1/2 pound asparagus, stalks trimmed and cut into 1 inch pieces 1 teaspoon lemon zest 1/2 cup chicken stock 3 cups cooked rice 1. In a large non-stick skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat. Season chicken pieces with salt, pepper and poultry seasoning. Place the chicken, skin-side down, and cook for 5 to 7 minutes. Turn the pieces skin-side up, and cook until golden brown and done, about 5 minutes. 2. Stir in garlic and red bell pepper. Add asparagus and cook for 1 minute. Stir in zest and chicken stock and bring to a simmer. Cover and cook for 3 minutes. Serve immediately over hot rice. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children’s author, culinary historian and author of seven cookbooks. This jargon isn’t difficult to master, but there is real danger of hearing and using words you don’t fully understand. Following are some basic terms that are often misunderstood:

CMA Comparative Market Analysis. A CMA is a report that shows prices of properties that are comparable to a subject property and that were recently sold, are currently on the market or were on the market, but not sold within the listing period. Closing Costs The entire package of miscellaneous expenses paid by the buyer and seller when the transaction closes. These costs include the brokerage commission, mortgage-related fees, escrow or attorney’s charges, recording fees, title insurance, etc. Closing costs generally are paid through escrow.

If you are involved in buying or selling real estate. Or, just for your general knowledge. There are numerous terms, commonly used jargon, in the real estate industry that make up a peculiar language all its own, which would be beneficial for you to learn.

PITI Principle, interest, taxes and insurance (PITI) are the four components of a monthly mortgage payment. Principal refers to the part of the monthly payment that reduces the remaining balance of the mortgage. Interest is the fee charged for borrowing the money. Taxes and insurance refer to the amounts that are paid into an escrow account each month for property taxes and mortgage and hazard insurance.

Flow Blue China ---

Q: I have about two dozen pieces of Flow Blue in the Melbourne and Normandy patterns. I am downsizing, but when I contacted antique dealers in my area there didn’t seem to be much interest. The few R̆HUV , JRW ZHUH OHVV WKDQ what I originally paid. -Peggy, Austin, Texas A: Flow Blue was introduced by 6WD̆RUGVKLUH (QJODQG potters in about 1825 and remained popular for a century. The name describes the blurred RU ÀRZLQJ H̆HFW RI WKH cobalt decoration achieved through the introduction of a chemical vapor into the kiln. Oriental patterns were especially favored by collectors. Flow Blue still is collected, of course, but prices have slumped. A platter in the Regent pattern that might have sold for $400 a few years ago sells today for only half that. The antique and collectible market is always changing. I suggest you hold on to your pieces until if and when the market rebounds. A good source is the Flow Blue International Collectors’ Club, P.O. Rise of the Machines ---

Sport, being competitive in nature, lends itself to the act of comparison. This is, of course, by design. In fact, it -- sports -- is nothing more than a vast and giant conspiracy that has been foisted upon the teeming masses in order to distract us from whatever it is we are supposed to really be paying attention to (and I have a hunch it has something to do with numbers) by bickering over nonsense like Hack Wilson’s slugging percentage and Pie Traynor’s wins above replacement. Who cares about what happened to the economic surplus. It’s the man keeping us down, keeping us bickering with one another so we won’t get our act together. They tell us it’s all about comradery, teamwork and sportsmanship, but put a guy from Michigan and one from Ohio in the same room and shut the door. They’ll come out looking OLNH EHWD ¿VK \RXœOO VHH They’ll tear each other to shreds. And don’t let the Internet fool you. Sure, you can go to Sports-Reference. com and glean all sorts of numbers. You can compare and contrast your favorite players from every era and act like you know it all. There are a million blog sites out there that promise to make you the next Joe Posnanski, where everyone is on a OHYHO SOD\LQJ ¿HOG DQG 'DQ Quisenberry can be in the +DOO RI )DPH 'RQœW NLG yourself. Time was, in order to glean various statistics you would go to a news stand and purchase a daily newspaper or specialty publication dedicated to the sporting event of your choice. In order to support that industry, you needed statisticians, writers, editors, umpires, judges, referees, linesmen,

scorekeepers, equipment managers, groundskeepers and various other gofers. One by one, they’re getting SLFNHG R̆ WKRVH MREV EXW we don’t say anything because Mulberry U. got a play-in game against Hooterville Tech in the tournament. That will shut us up for a few. Soon WKH\ÂśOO LQVWDOO WKH '+ in the National League and provide bathrooms and municipal sewer connections at Wrigley Field. They’ll take the guesswork out of the games, and we won’t say anything ... until it’s too late. Next they’ll get rid of the fans’ physical presence (see the Baltimore Orioles). It’ll save on stadium overhead, and it’s good for the environment. The athletes will be the last to go ... they’re always the last to know when it’s over. Boxing will be banned, and then they’ll come for football. The rankings are already being turned over to some faceless computer, and Madden Football correctly predicted the exact score of the Super Bowl this year. Soon the games will be just another simulation -- regulated, of course, so we can still gamble on the games and pay taxes. Think Skynet in “The Terminatorâ€? ... one day soon, the computers will be self-aware. Augusta National, KXPDQLW\ÂśV ÂżQDO EHDFRQ RI hope, will be the last to fall as cyborgs overtake Amen Corner, screaming, “Get in the hole!â€? after every shot. Yet somewhere out there, despite all of the devastation and destruction, at a corner bar somewhere in Schenectady, to a chorus of derisive jeers, a Yankee fan will insist that Jeter was still a better shortstop than Nomar in his prime, and another round will be ordered.
