June 11th - 17th Disabled veteran receives keys to renovated, mortgage-free home Mayor Sherman Saunders welcomed a new resident – and homeowner – to Danville last week as U.S. Army veteran Makea Barton received keys to a renovated, mortgage- free home in the Schoolfield community. Bank of America, through the House a Vet program of the Veterans Association of Real Estate Professionals, donated the home. “I am happy,” said Barton, who has been living in Washington, D.C., but will be relocating to Danville with her son Lateef Barton. “I feel blessed and content. I am glad to be here.” Barton began in the Army Reserves and then was deployed after the 9/11 attacks in the United States. She was assigned to bases in San Antonia, Texas, and Owings Mills, Md., before being sent to the U.S. base in Romania. She served nine years. The path toward homeownership for disabled veteran Barton began when she attended a housing summit at Prince George Community College in Maryland. Three months later, she learned that she had been selected for the House a Vet program. “They are awesome,” Barton said. “They brought me through the whole process, starting from day one at the summit and all the way to today. They have been good to me.” In early May, she learned she was getting a home in Danville, but was not told the street address. Barton arrived in Danville on Thursday night, and then was welcomed to her home in patriotic style on Friday morning. American flags lined the street leading to the house. The procession included a motorcycle escort by Patriot Riders. Representatives of American Legion posts 29, 325 and 1097 greeted her. The USA Homeownership Foundation Inc., which does business as the Veterans Association of Real Estate Professionals (VAREP), conducts housing summits to educate veterans about VA loans and homeownership opportunities. “That is where we met her and learned about her story,” said Richard Mercado of VAREP. “As we got to know her, we said that „we have to do something for her.” The next step was to collaborate with Bank of America, which operates a home donation program in partnership with nonprofit organizations. “Without Bank of America, none of this today would come true for Makea Barton,” Mercado said. Bank of America representatives attended the ceremony. The home they donated on Friday was its first in Danville but not the first in Virginia. In 2012, Bank of America committed to donating 1,000 homes to nonprofit organizations and government agencies that help military families. The goal was surpassed ahead of schedule. Also recognized at Friday’s ceremony was Odie Keen, a local construction contractor who renovated the two-bedroom house.

EMAIL Clean up on aisle 7! Clean up... Aisle 7. A husband and wife are shopping in their local grocery store. The husband picks up a case of beer and puts it in the cart. “What do you think you’re doing!?!” asks the wife. “They’re on sale! Only $10 for 24 cans!” he replies. “Put them back! It’s a waste of money!” demands the wife. So... he does, and they carry on with their shopping. A few aisles further along, the woman picks up a $20 jar of face cream and puts it in the cart. “What do you think YOU are doing!?!” asks the husband. “It’s my face cream! It makes me look beautiful!” replies the wife. Her husband retorts, “So does 24 cans of beer that’s half price...” HUSBAND DOWN ON AISLE 7!!!

Brenda Elaine Goins Elliott Nov. 13, 1948 - June 16, 2014 Don’t think of her as gone away, her journey’s just begun, Life holds so many facets, This earth is only one. Just think of her as resting from the pain and tears in a place of comfort. Where there are no days or years. Think how she must be wishing that we could know today how nothing but our sadness and pain can really pass away. Think of her as living in the hearts of those she touched for nothing loved is ever lost and she was loved so much. ~ unknown ~ Love, Your Entire Family. congratulations to my granddaughter Maekayla Wells, Class of 2015, Galileo High School. Rule changes for 2016? BY BILL DYER Special to the Piedmont Shopper Following another hiccup in an abbreviated qualifying session on Friday and another boring race on Sunday at Pocono Raceway, NASCAR Chairman Brian France told Fox Sports 1 over the weekend at Pocono that the sanctioning body was “not done yet” with the 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup rule package. Despite what NASCAR officials were saying a month ago that the rule package would be similar in design to next year’s rule package, France hinted otherwise. “I realize it’s easy to say we’re done with next year’s rules. Things are pretty good but our job is to make it better and have closer, tighter racing, where some teams that don’t have the budget and size of some of the bigger teams have a better shot to win and compete. That’s what we are trying to do.” France said. And that came on the heels of the single-car, Denver-based operation of driver Martin Truex Jr., winning at Pocono Sunday for the first time since 2013. It was exhilaration to witness a race where one of the little guys beat the odds where emphasis on horsepower and aerodynamics belong to the strongest teams in the garage. However, France said he is still not happy with the current package; it needs to be more acceptable. “We’re never happy because whatever package we come with, the drivers and teams are trying to gain an advantage on that. That’s what they do. They’re great at it. But my sense of it is we’ll be coming with some things that keep us marching toward our goal of tighter, closer, lowercost racing.” France went from tweaking the rule package next year to the new driver’s council that met for the first time last weekend at Dover. “The first thing is we’ve had lots of meetings in the past four or five years anyway,” France told FS1. “We’ve got an OEM council. We meet with the car manufacturers, we have track meetings and we have car-owner meetings that we didn’t have before. So, needless to say, the most important stakeholder in our sport, besides our fans, are our drivers.” France frowned when asked what the driver’s wanted from NASCAR. “None of them seem to agree. More downforce, less downforce, more grip, and less grip are the things they may agree on while talking quietly among themselves, but once they get with us, it’s ‘Whoa don’t do that. Do this. Do that.’ We make the decision on what’s good for everybody but we need their input. That’s what the council and the better collaboration is for because whatever decision we make, we can’t get enough information.” The current rule package needs a major overhaul. Racing is boring. Cars can’t seem to pass when they get tucked behind someone else. It’s like a draft pulls a car right up to another car’s bumper and stalls. Clean air reigns supreme, and NASCAR needs to fix that. And the creation of a new council isn’t a new NASCAR, but if they are wise they’ll listen….for a change. “I’ve said from the beginning that we’re going to improve our communications across the board,” France said. “We’ll talk with the drivers about what is important to them and go from there.” France is good with words, but words won’t bring back the “beatin’ and bangin’” that we crave. Racing is a far cry from the past. Changes are needed from top to toe if racing returns to its roots, and I’m not the one that believes France or his loyal followers are capable of fixing that.

“Observing the Spirit of the Law” This was clearly not an act of willful disobedience. As such, it was a side-splitting moment of hilarity, not a cause for punishment, and the very wise mother handled it as such. I was preaching to a great group of young people, and afterward, we stayed around for a fellowship such as can only be found in good ‘ol church circles: barbeque chicken, homemade nanner (banana, for the grammatically rigid) pudding, biscuits, and, to top it off, a beautifully decorated cake. The cake itself was huge, enough to feed five times as many people as were in attendance. Everyone had already come around for a piece or two, and folks were just sitting around talking, enjoying sweet fellowship. We were seated about five feet from the cake. A little fellow, cute as a button, made his way to the cake, and the closer he got, the bigger his eyes got. Trembling with excitement, he reached out and stuck his finger in the cake, and then put his frosting-covered finger in his mouth. His mother immediately said, “No! Don’t put your finger in that cake!” Which is why, I suppose, the next “slow motion, this cannot be happening” moment occurred. The lad leaned over, and lovingly licked a huge swatch of
frosting off of the cake and up into his mouth. It has been a very, very, very long time since I have laughed that hard. Once again, it was abundantly evident that the child was not trying to disobey. He simply heard what he was not allowed to do, and wisely (to him) accomplished the exact same thing another way. If I was an employer when this child reaches adulthood, I would hire him in a minute; he will very likely be the kind of employee that, rather than making excuses, always finds a way to get things done. But I could not help but reflect on a valuable spiritual lesson derived from that cake licking incident. Unlike that innocent child, adults often willingly obey only the very letter of the law of God, not realizing that violating the spirit of it is just as egregious as any violation of the actual details.
Romans 6:17 says, “But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.” There are most certainly a great number of
“thou shalt” and “thou shalt not” commands given in Scripture. All should be obeyed. But the Bible is not simply a rigid list of behavioral expectations; it is also a framework in which heart obedience should grow and flourish. It is one thing to not commit adultery; quite another for a husband to love his own wife so fiercely that adultery is never even considered. It is one thing to obey the Great Commission and tell people of their need of salvation; quite another to love sinners so deeply that they cannot possibly deny that our evangelistic efforts toward them are motivated by genuine compassion. It is one thing to observe the commands to dress modestly; quite another to accompany that with a meek and quite spirit rather than an attitude of righteous superiority. It is one thing to observe the commands to be faithful to the house of God, quite another to spend the week ahead of Sunday praying and sometimes fasting in order to come in spiritually full and ready to give out rather than empty and having to be filled.

Q: I just watched “This Is Where I Leave You” on HBO, and I absolutely loved it. The story and the cast were superb. Can you tell me about the actress who played Quinn, Jason Bateman’s wife? I think I’ve seen her before. -DeeDee T., via email A: Abigail Spencer, who plays Jason Bateman’s philandering wife in the adult coming-of-age movie (from the book of the same name), has acted in tons of stuff. Most recently she co-starred in the Sundance drama “Rectify,” and starting June 21, she’s featured in the hit HBO series “True Detective.” I spoke with Abigail recently about both gigs, and she’s so excited for fans to see her in these roles. Regarding “True Detective”: “It was a really great experience. The acting is just wonderful. Colin Farrell is so amazing. I think people are going to be blown away, particularly by his performance on the show. I think everybody is great, but I work mostly with Colin.” And she’s super-psyched for “Rectify,” which begins its third season July 9. “We left off with Amantha’s brother, Daniel, having this very strange confession, or re-confession. And (my character) Amantha wanted to clear his name. When Daniel says, ‘I just want it to be done,’ that is heartbreaking for her. “I’m amazed with the actors and writers and the complexity of human beings lives and celebrating it. The show is about celebrating life. About living again and about living your life and understanding who you are.” *** Q: I read your column every week, and I need to ask you about my favorite matinee idol, Shirley Temple. My local newspaper ran something about an exhibit and an auction that I was hoping you could tell me more about.

Abigail Spencer -- Janice F., Louisville, Kentucky A: The traveling museum exhibition, entitled “Love, Shirley Temple,” has visited select cities from New York to California and will culminate with an auction of hundreds of her personal items at the historic Little Theatre in Kansas City, Missouri, on July 14. You can still catch the exhibition June 20-27 in Fort Worth, Texas, and July 3-8 at the Frazier Museum in your hometown of Louisville. You can order the commemorative hardbound auction book at theriaults.com. *** READERS: Here is the list of NBC shows that have been renewed and canceled, starting with the renewed shows: “The Blacklist,” “The Biggest Loser,” “The Celebrity Apprentice,” “Chicago Fire,” “Chicago P.D.,” “Grimm,” “Hannibal,” “Hollywood Game Night,” “Law and Order: SVU,” “The Mysteries of Laura,” “The Night Shift,” “Undateable” and “The Voice.” TV shows that have either ended their run or have been canceled include: “A to Z,” “About a Boy,” “Allegiance,” “Bad Judge,” “Constantine,” “Marry Me,” “One Big Happy,” “Parenthood,” “Parks and Recreation” and “State of Affairs.” As of this writing, the fates of “A.D.: The Bible Continues” and “American Odyssey” had not been decided, although both were leaning toward canceled. PICKS OF THE WEEK
“Timbuktu” (PG-13) -- In the rolling dunes of Mali, alongside centuries-old cultural artifacts, families face the threat of fundamentalism forcing its way into the rhythm of life. Kidane (Ibrahim Ahmed) lives simply, herding livestock with his wife, daughter and an adopted child who helps with the work. At the outset of the film, foreign jihadists are shown using priceless relics for target practice. The pastoral scene is infested with newly arrived clerics and heavily-armed young men enforcing rules against everything from music and clothing to soccer and socializing. Director Abderrahmane Sissako creates an enchanting portrayal of fully realized, authentic-feeling characters. Even with the jihadists, you feel like there are real humans under the monstrous deeds. It’s a movie that radiates importance and love for life, without burdening the audience with heavyhanded delivery.
Ibrahim Ahmed in “Timbuktu” •••••••••••• “The Forger” (R) -- John Travolta’s performance in this heist flick/family drama is unbelievable. As tough-guy art forger Ray Cutter, his sensitive painting talent, his hard-boiled fighting skills, and especially his Boston accent, are thoroughly unconvincing. Ray cuts a deal with Keegan the crime boss (Anson Mount). Keegan will help get Ray an early release from prison, and Ray will forge a Monet painting and swap it with the real-deal in the museum. Ray makes the deal so he can spend some time with his teenage son who has a terminal brain tumor, which doesn’t make much sense, because forging a masterpiece typically takes a while.
“If You Build It” -- This documentary traces an innovative educational program that puts students in charge of increasingly challenging and meaningful building projects. Architects Emily Pilloton “Survivor” (PG-13) -and Matthew Miller run Milla Jovovich stars as a “Studio H,” the hands-on London-based American program that teaches kids security agent. Throw Paint at Cancer Participants Exhibit at the Sutherlin Art and Wine Show – New Fall Program Planned Throw Paint at Cancer is a free, exciting peer to peer support program for cancer patients and survivors to express themselves through art, brought to the community by The Cancer Research and Resource Center of Southern Virginia, an outreach initiative of VCU Massey Cancer Center. The series consists of continuing eight week sessions meeting Thursdays, from 3:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. at the Danville Museum of Fine Arts & History Swanson Studio. No previous art experience is required. There is no cost to sign up and all supplies are provided. The first exciting Throw Paint at Cancer group exhibit was Saturday, May 16 as part of the Sutherlin Art and Wine Show on the Museum grounds. There were close to 30 paintings shown and many of the program participants were thrilled to attend with friends and family members to view their work and all the art on display. Laughter and happy tears flowed. A new version of the program targeted to start in the fall will be geared toward young people. Are you a teen or young adult living with cancer—your own cancer or that of a loved one—or know children who are coping with adult cancer in the home? If so, we would like to tell you about the opportunity to enjoy a creative, uplifting environment offering peer-to-peer support through Throw Paint at Cancer. Sometimes it is difficult to verbally articulate the complex ways cancer affects people’s hearts, minds and lives. The arts have a way of tapping into feelings that often can be more cathartic than words. We want to be sure that younger folks who have been touched by cancer have this same opportunity. If you are interested, or know someone who could benefit, please call the number below. Throw Paint at Cancer is made possible with the generous support of Danville Regional Medical Center partnering with the Cancer Research & Resource Center of Southern Virginia/Danville and the Danville Museum of fine Arts & History. The Cancer Research & Resource Center is funded by VCU Massey Cancer Center and the Virginia Tobacco Regional Revitalization Commission.
Pictured are from left, program participants Pat Clark, Sandy Williams, Bryan Morris, son of Terry Morris, center, Terry’s daughter, Ashley Morris Mitchell, Melanie Vaughan, staff member, the Cancer Research and Resource Center of Southern Virginia and Cynthia Hubbard, MFA, the talented and dynamic instructor for Throw Paint at Cancer who is an artist, preservationist and cancer survivor. For more information about the program and future sessions, please call the Cancer Resource Center, 421-3060 or email cllitzenberg@vcu.edu.

“The Lady in White” is an original horror film that takes place during a police interrogation of Dan, a man accused of murdering his family. Dan maintains his innocence claiming it to be the work of the mysterious entity known as the Lady in White. Initially skeptical, the detective soon learns the man might be telling the truth as the Lady In White comes to the
“The story actually started as a small short film project for Sam Knapp’s class at the SVHEC while I was a Digital Art & Design student,” Guthrie said. “For my senior thesis, I wanted to expand on it and make the story more in-depth.” During “The Lady in White” casting call Guthrie is looking to cast the main character Dan, the detective, the police chief, guard and a number of extras as police officers. Individuals attending the casting call should bring their acting resume and be prepared to screen test with provided dialogue. “I want to deliver a high quality, professional film, so I prefer people with prior acting experience but newcomers will be considered. I also welcome any retired law enforcement officers who would like to assist as technical advisors,” Guthrie said. “The Lady in White” will be shot in mid-to-late October for 7-10 days. “The majority of shooting will take place in Halifax County, and Dr. Betty Adams and I have met with County Administrator Jim Halasz to discuss possible locations,” Guthrie stated. “Certain characters will need to travel to Liberty University for a couple of days of shooting, and there will be at least one night shoot,” Guthrie continued. After shooting, Guthrie will spend the fall and early spring editing and finalizing the film for a spring 2016 release. The film will not only be his senior thesis, but he also plans to submit it to film festivals in Virginia and across the country. “Being a student at Liberty and apart of the cinematography program, we’re privileged to work with industry standard professional equipment. I want to emphasize that we’re not a bunch of kids running around with cameras. This is a professional experience,” Guthrie said. Guthrie has started a Kickstarter campaign to raise $1,000 to assist with film costs and to help the actors with travel expenses. The campaign has raised $380 and has 13 days to go. If Guthrie doesn’t raise the whole $1,000 then he won’t receive any of the money that’s been pledged. Guthrie encourages anyone who would like to support his campaign to visit the Kickstarter site at HYPERLINK “https://www.kickstarter. com/projects/633764710/lady-in-white” \t “_blank” https://www.kickstarter.com/ projects/633764710/lady-in-white. Lewis Guthrie is a graduate of Danville Community College’s Digital Art & Design program at the SVHEC. “The Lady in White” will be Guthrie’s second film. His first, a full-length remake of the Night of the Living Dead, was shot in Halifax County and premiered on Halloween 2013. Here’s to the Losers
--There used to be a baseball player and manager named Leo Durocher. He was a tough guy -- small in size, but large and skilled in matters involving the fist -- and he had the mouth to match. They called him “The Lip,” because that’s what he was always giving people he interacted with. He was a member of the Yankees’ World Serieswinning “Murderer’s Row” and the Cardinals’ “Gashouse Gang,” and he managed “Dem Bums” out of Brooklyn and the Giants out of the Polo Grounds. He’s one of the winningest managers in baseball history, and there’s a plaque with his name on it in Cooperstown. Chances are you never heard of the guy ... but you’ve heard hiscatchphrase: “Nice guys finish last.” It has been said that Durocher made that remark in a passive, casual way and not the sneering, cutting way the phrase has often been presented over the years. Talking to one of his ballplayers, he pointed at the Giants taking batting practice, being courteous and nice to people, and he made the observation that they were in last place. “Nice guys. Finish last.” Over the years, like anyone with a catchphrase, he attempted to build off it ... how he would trip his own mother if she was rounding third in a tie ball game in order to win. Sixty ears later, Leo’s phrase remains for those who believe in winning at all costs. A guy named Connie Mack made a living out of baseball, too. Unlike Durocher, he had a pretty unremarkable career as a player. He was a nice guy who famously wore suits in the dugout as

manager. He didn’t have a catchphrase, he had a “Code of Conduct” that he passed out to his players. It read as such: 1. I will always play the game to the best of my ability. 2. I will always play to win, but if I lose, I will not look for an excuse to detract from my opponent’s victory. 3. I will never take an unfair advantage in order to win. 4. I will always abide by the rules of the game -- on the diamond and in my daily life. 5. I will always conduct myself as a true sportsman -- on and off the playing field. 6. I will always strive for the good of the entire team rather than for my own glory. 7. I will never gloat in victory or pity myself in defeat. 8. I will always do my utmost to keep myself clean -- physically, mentally and morally. 9. I will always judge a teammate or an opponent as an individual, and never on the basis of race or religion. I give Connie Mack credit for stopping at nine. Also, give credit to Connie for having the guts to say those things during a time when the game was a sloppy, tobacco-spitting, drunken circus rife with segregation. Maybe Durocher was onto something though ... after all, Connie Mack lost more games than any other manager, finished last more than any other manager. Ah, but Mack also won the most games. He managed 53 years, won nine pennants and five World Series. He’s in the same Hall as the other guy. Alas, he has no catchphrase ... you decide who was wise. The Launch Place invests $250,000 in Panacea BioMatx, a precision medicine manufacturer, to expand its new operation in the River District of Danville DANVILLE, Va. (Thursday, June 4, 2015) – The Launch Place announced today that it is investing $250,000 in Panacea BioMatx, Inc., to position the company to expand its new personalized medicine technology. This patent-pending technology is a combination of robotic manufacturing and software designed to replace the need for a person to take multiple pills daily. According to the National Institute of Health, precision medicine is an emerging approach for long-term disease management and prevention that takes into account individual variability in genes, environment, and lifestyle for each person. While significant advances in precision medicine have been made for select cancers, the practice is not currently in use for most chronic diseases. Many efforts are underway to help make precision medicine the norm rather than the exception. To accelerate the pace, President Obama unveiled the Precision Medicine Initiative (PMI) earlier this year - a bold new enterprise to revolutionize medicine and generate the scientific evidence needed to move the concept of precision medicine into every day clinical practice. In return of this investment, Panacea will expand this new operation to Danville’s River District and access The Launch Place’s wrap around entrepreneurship and business consulting services. Panacea is headquartered in the Research Triangle Park, N.C. “Panacea combines peer-reviewed scientific research, with easy to navigate online surveys and a patent pending robotic platform to create truly personalized dietary supplement formulations in a single easy to swallow pouch,” said The Launch Place President & CEO Eva Doss. “This solution uses great tasting whole foods versus a handfuls of pills to tailor nutritional supplements
Panacea CEO Edison Hudson said the company’s mission is simple: “People are very different genetically and metabolically so there is a clear case for personalization based on profile data and medical condition. Panacea has created a platform that allows integration of personal data with cost effective use of robotics to produce truly customized healthcare solutions.” Co-founders Hudson and L. Staton Noel III are motivated by the challenges associated with nutritional deficiencies and poor compliance due to “pill burden,” and felt there should be a way to enable not only healthy people, but also those with chronic disease and swallowing difficulties to receive the nutrition they need. Noel’s career in biotech and pharmaceutical research focused on the chronic diseases associated with aging, the biology of aging and the underlying genetic mechanisms. Hudson has extensive experience in creating and delivering highly sophisticated robotics and manufacturing automation. The two talents combined to create Panacea in 2013. Hudson indicated, “Panacea’s custom-made formulas can be adapted or changed as we age and enter different stages of life. Potential drug or medical condition interactions may be identified up front to allow the consumer to make their best possible educated decision about the amounts and types of supplements they consume,” he said. “This is a game changer for the industry.” Hudson noted that Danville has great resources for a young company to enable rapid expansion. The region’s emphasis on manufacturing, and the Launch Place’s strong support for entrepreneurship, made an agreement logical for the company. The Launch Place assists with entrepreneurship and business development, and job creation and retention through its business consulting, mentoring and training, residential and office subsidies, and two seed investment funds in the Dan River region of Virginia.

* Fans of the long-running sitcom “Scrubs” will be familiar with the main character, Dr. John “J.D.” Dorian, and his best friend, Dr. Christopher Turk. You might not realize, though, that the actors who played those roles -- Zach Braff and Donald Faison -- also are best friends in real life. * It was Alice Roosevelt, prominent socialite and daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt, who declared that her purpose in life was to “empty what’s full, fill what’s empty, and scratch where it itches.” * King James VI of Scotland was also, after the crowns of England and Scotland were united in 1603, King James I of England. He may have been doubly noble, but those who study such things say that his personal habits would not have been out of place in a commoner of the time period. He reportedly never bathed, claiming that baths were an unhealthy practice, and he would wear the same clothes for months on end. * Three of the first five presidents of the United States -- John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe -- died on July 4.
* The game of tag may seem like an innocent children’s pastime, but in some countries it has a sinister undertone. In Italy, players pretend that anyone getting tagged has caught the black plague. In Madagascar, leprosy is the contagion that is being supposedly spread by the game, while in Spain, it’s relatively harmless fleas. * Taking the stairs may be good for your cardiovascular health, but there are dangers you might not know of. In an average year, approximately 27 people are killed while using an elevator, while 1,600 die while taking the stairs. *** Thought for the Day: “Learning is what most adults will do for a living in the 21st century.” -Lewis Perelman (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
