The Manly Man Issue Happy Father’s Day! Be Present on Father’s Day By Glenn Mollette
Sadly, too many Americans are growing up without the presence of a father. According to the U.S. Census Bureau 24 million children live in biological-absent father homes. The positive impacts of having dad around are numerous such as better social-emotional and academic functioning and fewer behavioral problems. Children in father-absent homes are almost four times more likely to be poor. In 2011, 12 percent of children in married-couple families were living in poverty, compared to 44 percent of children in mother-only families.* Youths in father-absent households had significantly higher odds of incarceration than those in mother-father families. Youths who never had a father in the household experienced the highest odds. A study using data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study revealed that in many cases the absence of a biological father contributes to increased risk of child maltreatment. The results suggest that Child Protective Services agencies have some justification in viewing the presence of a social father as increasing children’s risk of abuse and neglect. It is believed that in families with a non-biological father figure, there is a higher risk of abuse and neglect to children, despite the social father living in the household or only dating mother. * Other problems such as drug and alcohol abuse, childhood obesity and struggling with Education are also associated statistically with children who live in father-absent homes. Obviously there are cases where children have done very well. Statistically it has not been the norm. I’m glad mom and dad didn’t abort me and I’m glad they stayed together. Looking back I know it took both of them working very hard to raise five children. My dad was not perfect but there are many good things I can say about him. I wish he were still alive so I could say, “Happy Father’s Day.” I have had a lot of good mentors over the years. Mentors can do and be a lot. However, it’s tough to replace a father. One of my sons has been with me the last few days. We’ve been on the basketball court a few times. We’ve sat on the back porch and chatted late at night. As always we have shared a lot of meals and spent time hanging out. On Father’s Day he will head out to his next military assignment. We will stand in the airport and hug farewell. I will tell him I am so proud of him and love him. I will wave goodbye until he disappears on the other side of the security gate. I will then call my other military son to tell him essentially the same thing. Be quick on the visits and the telephone this Father’s Day. Regardless if you are the child or parent, the present is what we have and absence must be a thing of the past. Thanks to the National Fatherhood Initiative for providing statistics and data shared in this article. EMAIL You Caught My Eye At a hotel restaurant, a man sees an attractive woman sitting alone at the next table. Suddenly, she sneezes, and a glass eye comes flying out of her eye socket. It hurls by the man, and he snatches it from the air and hands it back to her. “This is so embarrassing,” the woman says, and she pops her eye back in place. “I’m sorry to have disturbed you. Let me buy dinner to make it up to you. May I join you?” He nods. The woman is a stimulating conversationalist, stunningly pretty, and the man finds they have a lot in common. He gets her phone number and asks, “You are the most charming woman I’ve ever encountered. Are you this nice to every guy you meet?” “No,” she replies. “You just happened to catch my eye.”

Moot point BY BILL DYER Special to the Piedmont Shopper The debate over a driver missing 11 races and still make the Chase may be a moot point after Kyle Busch finished dead last in Sunday’s rain-shortened Quicken Loans 400 at Michigan International Speedway. It was the second finish of 36th or worst since Busch returned to racing after suffering a broken right leg and a fractured left foot in the season-opening Xfinity Series race at Daytona in February. A controversial medical waiver by NASCAR allows Busch a chance to make the Chase if he wins a race and is ranked in the top 30 after the September cutoff race at Richmond. Busch needs a win, worth at least 37 points, and then average about a 13th-place finish in the other 10 races before the Chase. Sunday, Busch crashed following the third red-flag of the race on lap 53. He was heard over the team’s radio that rain was the culprit. Kevin Harvick also said the track was not completely dry at the time of the restart. “When you only have a handful of races to score all the points you need and get a win, you can’t squander them on the hook,” said Busch crew chief Adam Stevens. “You might get one mulligan in a 10race stretch, and we just used that today (Sunday).” While one Busch was complaining about the rain, older brother Kurt was celebrating in Victory Lane following some savvy pit strategy that put him in the lead before a heavy downpour caused officials to cut short the 400 mile race. More important than Busch winning for the second time this season, it keeps another driver from claiming a Chase spot. There have been 10 different winners in the season’s first 15 races. Last year, three drivers made their way into the Chase via points. Jamie McMurray, Kasey Kahne and Jeff Gordon are the top three winless drivers in points following Sunday’s race at MIS. When they were able to race once again, it was clear that clean air was still the king. News out of MIS says NASCAR is looking at a different aero package to debut at Kentucky Speedway next month. Apparently, the lower downforce rule change will apply only to that track, but it’s still a step in the right direction in a sport that’s buzzing over no side-byside racing. A new rule change will be costly for the owners, and this is where NASCAR and its team owners must address that issue. Secondly, will that change make racing any better? NASCAR pegged last month’s Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte as a beginning point for the newer package. But following team owners howling over the cost NASCAR backed off. While the issue is a testy one for the owners, drivers are calling for increased horsepower and less aerodynamics. “I’d be in favor of anything that makes the cars able to race around each other and to put more of the speed into the driver’s hands,” said Carl Edwards. “I know NASCAR is all for the same thing, and I don’t think NASCAR is scared to make changes. “I have a sense that something neat is coming.” Kentucky is a great start for a change since its 1.5-mile size is a good gauge for any potential aero change. A majority of the ovals on the Sprint Cup schedule are 1.5-mile in size, including five of the 10 tracks in the Chase. “It’s my understanding they’re looking at Kentucky, which is just for one race,” said Martin Truex Jr. “I have as many questions about it as everybody else. What’s it going to be like? Is it going to do what they think and what some of the drivers think it’s going to do? “We’ll have to see how that goes.” (Note: All quotes are from reliable NASCAR sources.)

If you have a security freeze or fraud alert on your Experian credit report, you cannot create a My Account. Here’s why: When you sign up for an account, it looks at items in your credit file and asks you questions about them as a means of identifying you. For example, it might ask the price range of your auto payment, or the last five digits of your credit card, or the amount of your mortgage payment -- all information that’s on your credit report. If you want to receive a paper copy of your Social Security Statement without doing it online, you can print out the “Request for Social Security Statement” (Form SSA-7004) and mail it in. You’ll get your paper copy in four to six weeks. The general number to call for Social Security questions is 1-800-7721213. To learn more about the Social Security My Account, go online to www.socialsecurity.gov/ myaccount.
If you’ve lost or misplaced your Medicare card, you now can get a replacement online -- at the Social Security My Account site. My Account is a place where you can sign up to track earnings, change your address and much more, and Social Security encourages you to use this online feature. At the bottom of the page where you can create a new My Account is a tiny note about blocking electronic access. If you wish to block access to your online Social Security account (for example, if you’ve been the victim of domestic violence or the victim of identity theft), you can do that online as well. If you later decide you want access, you (c) 2015 King Features can contact Social Security Synd., Inc. to unblock it.

PEEP TALK ! You don’t ever have to worry about anyone ceasing to read the Piedmont Shopper. My uncle, Henry D. Hopkins, is 87 years old & he goes somewhere to get a stack of them each week. He delivers them to the nursing home, and to his friends in his neighborhood. He makes sure everyone gets a copy every week! He and his wife Shirley love to share it and laugh at the jokes and stories. That paper is the heartbeat for a lot of people! My daughter, Ruby, sells Scentsy and she has used your paper for many occasions. She knows that is the one paper that everyone reads! Our church, Central Boulevard Church of God, just used your paper for our Vendor Spring Fling on 4/11/15, and I am sure half or more of the people came because of the Shopper!” -Deborah Severt

PICKS OF THE WEEK
“Get Hard” (R) -- A hapless, filthy-rich financial type, James (Will Ferrell), is headed to prison for some whitecollar crimes, so he enlists a hardened criminal to help him prepare for the joint. Except that the “hardened criminal” isn’t anything of the sort. Darnell (Kevin Hart) has actually never been in trouble; James just assumes he knows about prison because he’s black. Darnell gladly accepts money from a rich idiot asking for prison lessons, and a series of unfunny exploits unfold. Directed by Ethan Cohen (“Tropic Thunder”), the movie abandons all hope of parody, and really doubles-down on the butt jokes and racial humor. The butt jokes are thin from the start and end up spread across the entire film. Dumb jokes can be used in a smart way, but don’t expect that here.
Sean Peen in “The Gunman” •••••••••••• “The Gunman” (R) -- It’s Sean Penn’s turn to conduct the Over-50 Pain Train, as the wellestablished dramatic actor takes a dip into the action genre. Penn plays Jim, a former international operative who was set up by his jealous friend, Felix (Javier Bardem). Baddies start coming for Jim, so he starts investigating -- mostly with his fists and guns. Pierre Morel, director of “Taken” -- the crash that started this fivelane pile-up of samey oldguy action-flicks -- does not make lightning strike a second time. The dialog is terse but not interesting, the fights are brutal but not exciting.
“Treading Water” -- Born with a disorder that gives him a permanent perfume of fishiness, awkward teenager Mica (Douglas Smith) has always had trouble connecting with people. He lives in a “While We’re Young” gaudy house-museum (R) -- Josh and Cornelia dedicated to the famed (Ben Stiller and Naomi Mexican singer Guillermo Watts) are a 40-something Garibai. The History of ‘APRONS’ I don’t think our kids know what an apron is. The principle use of Grandma’s apron was to protect the dress underneath because she only had a few. It was also because it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and aprons used less material. But along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children’s tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears. From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes halfhatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven. When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.. And when the weather was cold, Grandma wrapped it around her arms. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls. In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees. When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men folk knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner. It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that ‘old-time apron’ that served so many purposes. REMEMBER: Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw. They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron. I don’t think I ever caught anything from an apron - but love

* It was U.S. Vice President Hubert Humphrey who made the following sage observation: “Compassion is not weakness and concern for the unfortunate is not socialism.” * Chop suey is not actually a Chinese dish; it was invented in California. * Dick Simon, one of the founders of the Simon and Schuster publishing company, was struggling in his business when he visited his aunt in 1924. She had been looking for a book of crossword puzzles to give to her daughter, but the puzzles being relatively new (first appearing in newspapers in 1913), there was no compilation available. Seeing an opportunity for his fledgling business, Simon and his partner, Lincoln Schuster, published a book of puzzles right away. The puzzle book was an instant best seller, and its revenues supported Simon and Schuster while the

When booking vacations, many families find vacation rentals to be a more affordable lodging option than hotels. Though it’s still entirely possible to find a great deal at a hotel or resort, vacation rentals have become a popular option for families looking to save some money and spread out a little more. Vacation rentals are often homes located in popular tourist destinations. The rental owner may spend just a few weeks living in the property, then rent it out to vacationers when he or she is not occupying it. Vacation rentals are advantageous for many reasons, but there are still a few things rental shoppers should know before signing on the dotted line. * Know what you’re getting and get it in writing. Vacation rentals often advertise that everything is included, but that is not always what it seems. Unless you want to completely escape from society, you will likely want some Internet access and cable television. If the rental agreement says Internet is included, make sure the home has WiFi and high-speed Internet. You likely won’t want to pack your own wireless router or buy one upon your arrival, so make sure the amenities included in your rental are spelled out in significant detail. If the agreement says utilities are included, make sure that means regardless of usage. Some might only extend to a certain dollar amount, in which case you might receive a utility bill long after your vacation has ended. * Choose the right destination. Vacation rentals are often most affordable when they’re located in popular destinations where rental owners must compete with one another for tenants. That competition keeps the prices down and makes rentals more feasible for cost-conscious vacationers. Less popular vacation destinations may still boast vacation rentals, but they are likely to cost more because there are fewer of them and the owners will be looking to make as much as possible. * Find a rental with a full kitchen. Another benefit vacation rentals have over traditional hotels or resorts is they typically provide renters the ability to cook their own meals. That can lead to substantial savings over the course of a typical vacation, especially for families. When choosing a vacation rental, look for one with a full kitchen and, if you’re vacationing during the warmer months, inquire about the availability of a barbecue that allows you to spend a few nights enjoying dinner under the stars with your family. * Find a rental that’s accessible to local nightlife and entertainment. Even the most affordable vacation rental might not work if it’s not close enough to local nightlife, entertainment and restaurants. Unless you’re looking for complete seclusion, you will likely grow to dislike driving a long distance before you can reach civilization. Isolated vacation rentals may waste valuable time during your vacation and make you less likely to book activities or go out at night. * Make sure the rental is safe. Adult vacationers won’t have to focus as much on a vacation rentals safety. But adults traveling with children should examine photos of the property closely to ensure there aren’t any safety hazards that might put kids at risk of injury. The home’s exterior should be safe as well. Avoid cliffside rentals that aren’t fenced in or heavily wooded areas where kids can easily wander off and get lost. If the property has a pool, make sure that pool is fenced in so youngsters can’t fall in when their parents aren’t looking. * Don’t send money before signing a lease. A vacation rental should come with a leasing agreement similar to a traditional apartment rental. Many vacation rentals are handled by reputable real estate agencies that are well equipped to answer any questions you have and make sure everything is being done legally. That said, research the real estate company before signing a lease and sending any money, and ask for references on the property from past tenants. Once you’re satisfied with the rental and the real estate agency and/or landlord, make a copy of the rental agreement for yourself before sending the agreement and payment to the realtor. Vacation rentals are often a great option for vacationing families. By employing a few tricks of the trade, families can find rentals that meet all their needs without breaking the bank.

* On July 4, 1826, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the second and third presidents of the United States, respectively, die on the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Both men had been central in drafting the historic document. * On June 30, 1859, Frenchman Emile Blondin becomes the first daredevil to walk across Niagara Falls on a tightrope. Wearing pink tights and a yellow tunic, Blondin crossed a cable about 2 inches in diameter and 1,100-feet long using only a balancing pole. * On July 5, 1865, in London, revivalist preacher William Booth and his wife Catherine establish the Christian Mission, modeled after the British army, with women given ranks equal with men. In 1878, the organization was renamed the Salvation Army, and two years later the first U.S. branch opened in Pennsylvania.
* On July 2, 1881, President James A. Garfield is shot as he walks through a railroad waiting room in Washington, D.C. His assailant, Charles J. Guiteau, was a disgruntled and perhaps insane office seeker. Garfield died 80 days later of blood poisoning. * On July 1, 1951, Cleveland Indians ace Bob Feller pitches the third no-hit game of his career, making him the first modern pitcher ever to throw three no-hitters. Feller made his first start in 1936, when he was just 17. * On July 3, 1985, the blockbuster action-comedy “Back to the Future,” in which the iconic DeLorean concept car is transformed into a time-travel device, premieres. * On June 29, 1995, the American space shuttle Atlantis docks with the Russian space station Mir to form the largest manmade satellite ever to orbit the Earth. It was the 100th human space mission in U.S. history. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

The Diamond Fever 18U team is gearing up for another great season! This weekend (June 13-14), Diamond Fever players were the champions of the blue bracket in the Dads and Diva’s Got Game tournament in Summerfield, NC. Diamond Fever’s connection with DICK’S Sporting Goods and their Sports Matter program just keeps getting better. After joining the Sports Matter program last summer, Diamond Fever was able to earn the matching grant that enabled them to purchase their 10-acre facility that houses a large indoor practice building and three softball fields. Now that they are owners of the fields, they have huge plans! Currently, they are working to upgrade the fields after adding turf to the practice building. A person who travels by the facility on Kentuck Road will soon see new fencing and a road sign. In the works are plans to build dugouts and retaining walls. All of these improvements will make the facility ready to house tournaments and offer unlimited opportunities for the teams and the community. Diamond Fever has also added an 8U team and hopes to have an incredibly successful try-out season at the end of the summer. But this weekend is one of their most exciting opportunities yet. The DICK’S Sporting Goods Sports Matter program has chosen Diamond Fever once again for their nationwide marketing campaign. As part of this feature, DICK’S is sending a team onsite to learn and observe firsthand how the Sports Matter grant has impacted the Diamond Fever team. The organization’s journey will be documented in the Sports Matter communications, including print, photography, and video. An ESPN sportswriter, Tim Struby, and a film crew from Doubleday & Carnwright will visit the facility on behalf of the Sports Matter program Thursday evening, June 18, and then follow the 18U and 14U teams to Salem, VA for the ASA VA State Championship tournament. There, the crew will film the girls in action and capture what makes Diamond Fever the organization that teaches their players about determination, hard work, collaboration, and the importance of putting faith, family, and fortitude first! Diamond Fever is an organization that is growing and giving back to the community. And even though they have been a part of the community since 1998, their plans are just getting started. Diamond Fever is an organization to believe in and to support—an organization that molds our young athletes into the adults that know the value of hard work, teamwork, and integrity.

1. Who wrote and sang the theme song to the television show “Welcome Back, Kotter”? 2. Name the band that released “Never Say Die” in 1978. 3. In which song does Ray Charles speak the words, “Sing the song, children”? 4. Which group wrote and released “It’s Wonderful” in 1967? 5. Name the song that contains this lyric: “An only child alone and wild, A cabinet maker’s son, His hands were meant for different work And his heart was known to none.” Answers 1. John Sebastian, formerly of the Lovin’ Spoonful. The name of the show had to be changed from just “Kotter” because Sebastian couldn’t find a rhyme for the name. 2. Black Sabbath. It was their first charted single since 1970. 3. “I Can’t Stop Loving You,” in 1962. Numerous others have covered the song, but Charles is the only one who took the song to the top of the charts. 4. The Young Rascals on their “Once Upon a Dream” album. 5. “Leader of the Band,” by Dan Fogelberg in 1981. He wrote the song as a tribute to his musician father, who was still alive when the song came out. His father died the following year. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
