DCC Sports Hall Of Fame By Marie R. Harris Danville Community College’s Alumni Association held its fifth annual Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony and reception June 19, bringing the number inducted into the Hall of Fame over five years to 23. The inductees’ pictures with their trophies are permanently displayed on the Sports Hall of Fame honorary wall for all visitors to see in the DCC Educational Foundation office in Foundation Hall. Inductees for 2015 include O. Bruce Burnett, Danville Technical Institute center basketball player for the 1965-66 and 1966-67 teams; Joseph M. Carr, regional, national and international duathlon competitor and former DCC Associate Professor of Biology; and Jean Styers Rogers, cheerleading squad coach and sponsor for Danville Technical Institute basketball for the 1965, 66, 67 era. As the fifth honorees for the DCC Alumni Association’s Sports Hall of Fame, composed of individuals associated with Danville Technical Institute, VPI-Danville Extension, and Danville Community College, each individual possesses extensive sports background related to college or personal sports activities. Dr. Ed White, chairperson of the Sports Hall of Fame selection committee, explains, “The honorees who are being recognized this year have been chosen from a very select group of athletes who may not have otherwise been recognized for their accomplishments.” The first inductee, O. Bruce Burnette was an outstanding center, being chosen during his sophomore year at DTI as the Most Valuable Player on the DTI basketball team. Playing against The College of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, Burnette scored 59 points, grabbed 34 rebounds (he said, “many were his own”) and hit 19 of 22 free throws. Burnette’s scoring average ranged in the upper 20’s. Scoring 41 and 49 points in two other games, he says he “took up lots of space on the floor,” meaning his bulk inside the paint made a natural defense. On offense, his size made him hard to guard and to stop from scoring. The second inductee, Joe Carr, had been a consistent runner in his youth. Then multisport emerged as a different challenge. “The switch to multisport, triathlon and duathlon was a great move for me,” explains Carr. The duathlon, involving two disciplines, running and biking, became the multisport that was more suitable for me. Over the years I have excelled.” Each year for the past 25, Carr has made the USA duathlon team. Being on Team USA provides the opportunity to represent the United States and participate in the Duathlon World Championships. Thus far Carr has participated in 20 Duathlon Worlds with an age group championship victory in 1999. Carr has qualified for every World Duathlon since the beginning in 1991 in Palm Springs, California, a total of 24 times. He is one of three individuals who qualified for all duathlon teams including the 2015 World Duathlon, scheduled for October 14 in Adelaide, Australia. Jean Styers Rogers served as cheerleading squad coach during the 1965, 66, 67 basketball era when Danville Technical Institute had a fully operational cheerleading group with both male and female members.

Evening news is where they begin with ‘Good evening’, and then proceed to tell you why it isn’t.
Bruce Burnette, Jean Styers Rogers, and Joe Carr were inducted in to the Danville Community College Sports Hall of Fame June 19. Picture By Richard Davis She solicited cheerleaders, especially those from area schools who had enrolled at DTI, making her a bridge between rivals who were not previous teammates. Not only a coach, she was mother, mentor, sponsor, handling all aspects of fund-raising, transportation planning, safety conditioning, and securing of uniforms. “Being able to recognize the athletes who have been associated with Danville Community College, or its predecessor institutions, Danville Technical Institute and VPI, is something that the DCC Alumni Association is very passionate about,” explains Dr. White. “We are most grateful to the DCC Foundation for making this opportunity possible.”

EMAIL Kids These Days A young boy enters a barber shop and the barber whispers to his customer, “This is the dumbest kid in the world. Watch while I prove it to you.” The barber puts a dollar bill in one hand and two quarters in the other, then calls the boy over and asks, “Which do you want, son?” The boy takes the quarters and leaves. “What did I tell you?” said the barber. “That kid never learns!” Later, when the customer leaves, he sees the same young boy coming out of the ice cream store. “Hey, son! May I ask you a question? Why did you take the quarters instead of the dollar bill?” The boy licked his cone and replied, “Because the day I take the dollar, the game is over!”

Willingness to listen BY BILL DYER Special to the Piedmont Shopper Autocracy is a word I’m not familiar with, and when I read a piece this week that NASCAR always functioned as an autocracy, I was curious. The word means: the unlimited political power of a single ruler. What better way to describe NASCAR than that, which forever has been a monopolizing dictatorship. Yet, while operating as such, television ratings soared and track attendance was growing and NASCAR continued in its stubbornness ways. Then the meltdown. NASCAR was in trouble, and a break from the past was in the works. The hot button for this year was to energize a sport that had a stagnant on-track product that was producing dwindling attendance and shrinking television ratings. NASCAR needed not to be an ironfisted ruler as in the past, but a body that reached out to its peers to foster new ideas in order for the ship not to sink. And NASCAR did just that, listened for a change and announced a new rule package for next month’s Sprint Cup race at Kentucky Speedway. The rule is designed to reduce downforce on the cars. The goal is to induce more passing, especially in the corners where speeds have increased upward to 20 mph at some tracks. Ideally, if cars lose downforce that helps corner grip and cars are forced to slow down. As conceived, the slower speeds would increase passing by requiring drivers to throttle down. Through the first 15 races this year, only three times have winning passes occurred with 10 laps or less remaining. And at the same point in the season as last year, there have been 94 fewer lead changes…. and that needs a fix. While applauding NASCAR’s willingness to listen to drivers and fans who have been loudly criticizing their displeasure of this year’s product, the single-race ruling is a risky one, especially given how teams now qualify for the Chase. Points were the biggest factor in the old Chase format. Now teams in the top 30 in points earn a Chase spot with a win. What is scary is this: a struggling team far from championship material could immediately master the new rule change at Kentucky and earn a spot in the Chase. And that happens even if they struggle the final 20 races of the season. Winning a spot in the playoffs in a one-anddone environment is not fair. I’m bothered by the single-race rule change. There are a numbers of factors, including a rainshortened event, a race filled with cautions flags and no long green-flag runs that would make the rule change indefinable. But, it is a breakthrough from NASCAR’s long standing operating procedures that if changes were to be made it would come on their terms and no one else’s. Previously, drivers aired their grievances not collectively but individually inside a NASCAR hauler. The new driver’s council changed all of that. Walking on the hallowed grounds of NASCAR will be something new for its competitors. Whether a shorter rear spoiler and wider splitter will enhance competition remains to be seen. Drivers are still howling; wanting the same horsepower as last year and softer tires. Regardless of how Kentucky and the rest of the season play out, NASCAR is listening. And that’s the good news. Harvick on a roll: The numbers for Kevin Harvick just keep growing. Figures released last week by NASCAR revealed that Harvick has led 1,225 laps in the season’s first 15 races. In addition, the defending champion leads in several other categories including average running position (7.3), number of fastest laps (755) and a driver rating of a whooping 126.0. Teammate Kurt Busch, despite running in three fewer races due to a NASCAR suspension, is second in most-number of laps led with 665 and fastest laps 277. Harvick is the first driver since 2001 to lead more than 1,200 laps after 15 races.

Richard Rueben Moore was born September 11, 1933 in Danville, VA. He died June 13, 2015 at the VA hospital in Augusta, GA. He was the son of Howard Russell Moore and Dora Soyars Moore, who are both deceased. He was one of ten children. He was the youngest of six boys. He had five brothers and one sister who preceded him in death. They were Nelson Paige Moore, Hiram Wayland Moore, Stephen Alexander Moore, Kenneth Soyars Moore, Wallace Carroll Moore, and Addie Moore Spangler. He has three surviving sisters: Rachel Moore of Athens, GA; Patricia Hammond of Duluth, GA; and Irma Harrelson of Kentwood, LA. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and many cousins. He loved his family, music, and hotdogs. He loved to write poetry, and when he was growing up, he had one of his poems printed in the Danville Register and Bee. He graduated from George Washington High School in Danville, VA, and soon thereafter entered military service. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. After four years of service, he received an honorable discharge. He then moved to Atlanta,GA, where he worked for the U.S. government and attended Georgia Institute of Technology. He struggled with many health problems, and after becoming disabled, he spent many years being cared for by his mother, his brother Hiram, and finally by his sister Pat, with the invaluable assistance of many caring men and women who worked for the Veteran’s Administration. He spent the greatest portion of his adult life living with his brother Hiram, and then ultimately lived out the remainder of his days at Five Ponds Personal Care Home, in Hephzibah, GA. There he was cared for by the family of Billy Carroll and Fernando Peeples. He was diagnosed with lung cancer in June 2015 and spent only a few days in a Veteran’s Administration hospice facility before going home to Jesus, excited about being reunited with his family who had gone before him and meeting His Savior face to face. What people remember most about Richard was his sweet spirit and his grateful heart. He was truly thankful for all that he had, for every act of kindness, and for the people who cared for and loved him. Richard had the rare gift of focusing on the good, regardless of his circumstances. Funeral Services will be

“The Natives Are Restless” The moon was full on the island of Ecclesiastica, and a hot breeze was blowing, an unnaturally hot breeze emanating from the massive fire everyone was dancing around. Chief Reficul had on his best ceremonial garments, and an evil glint in his eye. The evil of that glint, though, was imperceptible to all but a few who knew him best, for he had managed through the years to pass himself off as a wise and beneficent leader of the varied groups of the faithful. “My people,” he thundered as the drums came to an abrupt halt, “It is time to begin preparing the meal. For too many years you have suffered at the hands of your enemies. We will now make things better, much better. A return to cannibalism will ensure your victory and success!” The assembled crowd roared with almost unanimous approval. Almost unanimous... “My chief,” came a timid voice from the front, “I am still not certain. I do not mean to question your wisdom, but how can devouring one another bring us victory? Would it not be better for us to stand shoulder to shoulder in the face of the enemy? True, we have our differences one with the other, we may not be able to agree on everything, but a return to cannibalism seems like such a drastic step, and one that will weaken us before our enemies.” “Silence!” the chief screamed in anger. “Do you not see how dangerous you are to each other, and how necessary it is for you to devour those with whom you have the slightest disagreement? Those who would destroy you are growing stronger by the day, we must take this step at once to avert disaster!” The multitude shouted their approval. They danced, they drummed, they celebrated. All reason was gone, all sensibility drowned in a cacophonous flood of self destruction. And
so it was that the people of Ecclesiastica had a feast; a cannibalistic, murderous buffet of their own brothers and sisters. And all the while their enemies, the real people of chief Reficul, sat back and watched in amazement as those whom they had fought for so long self destructed. Galatians 5:14-15 says “For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.” Paul was reminding the church at Galatia that they were capable of doing what the enemy could not do, they were capable of destroying themselves. Jesus said that the very gates of hell would not prevail against the church, but He never said that the church itself would not prevail against the church. I am blessed both to pastor, and to preach evangelistic meetings in a great many churches around the country. I have a fairly wide perspective to see the damage churches often do to themselves. That being the case, here are some simple rules for making sure that churches do not become restless natives, destroying themselves. One, never split a church to start a church. Doing so does not create another body of believers, it saws one body in half and unrealistically expects both bloody halves to live and thrive. Two, if you have a problem with someone in the body, deal with it privately, not publically, and certainly not on social media. Three, be mature. No pastor should ever have to chase people with perpetually hurt feelings. Four, have roots on your feet, not springs. Be so steady and faithful that your children learn by watching you. Church hoppers beget church hoppers. Five, forgive, and do so quickly. Fast forgiveness cures 99.99% of all church conflicts before they ever get big enough to do damage.

Q: Can you tell me if we’ll get another season of “The Hot Wives of Orlando”? I loved that show! -- Patty P., via email A: We will get more “Hot Wives,” but this time they are based in Vegas. “The Hot Wives of Las Vegas” will premiere Tuesday, Aug. 18, on Hulu (with episodes streaming weekly, not all at once like on Netflix). This go-round will see returning stars take on new roles, with Casey Wilson as Jenfer Beudon, who is “cocky, Southern, white trash and very pregnant”; Tymberlee Hill as Phe Phe Reed, Esq., who is “smart, outspoken, always juggling several jobs, and newly relocated to Las Vegas from Orlando.” Andrea Savage plays Ivanka Silversan, “a European exmodel, who believes she is the standard of beauty and perfection”; Danielle Schneider as Denise Funt, who is “neurotic, needy and recently divorced”; and Dannah Phirman as Leona Carpeze, a “tough, straight-talking broad, she’s the matriarch of the group and self-appointed peace keeper.” Series newcomer Erinn Hayes plays Callie Silversan, a “sensuous, mysterious, raven-haired witch.” *** Q: I know “Bates Motel” just finished its third season, but I already miss it. Can you tell when/if it will be back? Please tell me it has been renewed for another season! -- Frankie T., via email A: I can do you one better: “Bates Motel” has been renewed for TWO more seasons. Production for season four begins later this year, and it is slated to return in spring 2016. A&E is pairing this chilling series based on a hit scary movie with another chilling series based on a hit scary movie: “Damien.” “Damien” is based on “The Omen,” and stars Bradley James as Damien Thorn and

I don’t recall which station it was on, but it dared to be different, and my husband and I really enjoyed it. -- Tricia L., via email A: The original USA network drama -- which centers on Neil, who discovers that his wife, Grace, has been seeing a male escort, and then ends up becoming one himself -- started filming season two in April. While no premiere date has yet been given, I am going to guess that it will premiere later this summer or early fall, with 10 new episodes. Season one is now available on DVD, if you need to catch up, or refresh your memory. *** Q: Can you tell me what filmmaker Morgan Spurlock has coming up next? -- Neda F., West Palm Beach, Florida A: The “Super Size Me” and “Inside Man” documentarian directed and produced a new short film called “Crafted,” where Morgan captures remarkable artisans who have mastered their trades. Through these documentary subjects (the chefs behind Bar Tartine in San Francisco, Bloodroot Blades in Georgia and Nagatani-en in Iga, Japan), he explores how modern cultural influences and technology have allowed artisans to exceed previous expectations and attain the “perfect” product. PEEP TALK ! You don’t ever have to worry about anyone ceasing to read the Piedmont Shopper. My uncle, Henry D. Hopkins, is 87 years old & he goes somewhere to get a stack of them each week. He delivers them to the nursing home, and to his friends in his neighborhood. He makes sure everyone gets a copy every week! He and his wife Shirley love to share it and laugh at the jokes and stories. That paper is the heartbeat for a lot of people! My daughter, Ruby, sells Scentsy and she has used your paper for many occasions. She knows that is the one paper that everyone reads! Our church, Central Boulevard Church of God, just used your paper for our Vendor Spring Fling on 4/11/15, and I am sure half or more of the people came because of the Shopper!” -Deborah Severt “I feel our business has grown every year by advertising in the Piedmont Shopper. Judy Bryant is my advertising consultant.”- Bert Sellers Owner • Seller Brothers, Inc. “We moved here over 5 years ago and LOVE your paper. It was our first time selling items through your ads. Thank you so very much for all you do in giving of yourselves to help others. God bless!” Howard and Lynda Richardson
“Thank you for your free service, had a great yard sale.” -Terri Lovell
“You sold a walker for me, thank you!” -C.C. Moore, Danville

My reason to them is I spend all my advertising dollars I can with the Piedmont Shopper. We get the most results from them due to their loyal readers and awesome staff. Lesley Tucker took us from a non existent business to a successful well know business in less than a year. Her insightful ad designs pop off the page and have the customers walking through the door. “ Dustin Pierce - Owner - C&D Family Pawn “My experience with Judy Bryant at the Piedmont Shopper: I have worked with Judy for over 7 years and she is always willing to do whatever I ask of her. Sometimes I send an ad in late and she manages to get it in for me. I receive many applicants from my advertisements in the Piedmont Shopperit reaches so many people in our area each week. Thank you, Judy, for your hard work!” Vicky Miller - HR Piney Forest Health & Rehab Center

* Having a yard sale? Here’s a great way to put out extra signs when you don’t have a way to stake them into the ground: “Write your sign advertising your yard sale on the sides of a big box. Place it where you want it, and add a large rock to the inside, then tape shut. We did this when we had no poles to tape signs to or any other way to get them to stand up. It worked really well!” -- D.R. in Georgia * Avoid calling the pediatrician’s office on Monday mornings for routine business. Wait until the afternoon. When grilling, create two heat zones: start with high, direct heat over the coals, and then move the food away from the coals to cook all the way through without burning.

“Woman in Gold” (PG13) -- Helen Mirren stars as Maria Altman in this real-life story about an Austrian-born woman mounting a legal battle to reclaim an iconic painting that was seized when the Nazis took Vienna, and was claimed by the Austrian government after the war. Fighting at her side is young lawyer Randal Schoenal (Ryan Reynolds, doing something a little different), who develops his own personal attachment to the case. It all depends on how engaged you can be with Altman’s struggle to recover the painting, “Portrait of Adele BlochBauer I” by Gustav Klimt (you’ve probably seen a poster of it if you’ve ever been near a college dorm). To raise the stakes, the movie endeavors to make you feel for Altman not as somebody fighting for an ineffably valuable painting, but somebody trying to reclaim part of her lost family.
Diane Keaton & Morgan Freeman in “5 Flights Up” •••••••••••• private, Gary Hook (Jack O’Connell) is left stranded and struggling to survive in hostile Northern Ireland in 1971 during the full swing of the bloody, decades-long conflict known as the Troubles. Based on real accounts of what happened one night in Belfast, Hook is left wounded after a riot separates him from his unit. In one long night, Hook faces threats from all sides, doesn’t know where to go or whom to trust. The film works both as an examination of modern conflict where lines are blurry, and as expertly crafted action. “The Slow West” (R) -Here’s a killer Western with a brain, great acting and a Gatling-gun soundtrack. A baby-faced, upper-crust Scottish 16-year-old named Jay Cavendish (Kodi SmitMcPhee) should last about as long as a snowball in this version of the Old West, if it weren’t for his wry, gunslinging travelbuddy, Silas (Michael Fassbender, impeccable as always). Jay’s on a mission to find his lost love and experience the West, while all manner of scum and savagery close in. With this first feature film, writerdirector John Maclean makes his entrance like a desperado tearing through the saloon doors.
“5 Flights Up” (PG-13) -- A couple of retired lovebirds have nested in the same Brooklyn apartment since they bought it in the 1970s. Alex (Morgan Freeman) is a stubborn-but-loveable painter, and Ruth (Diane Keaton) is a neurotic-butloveable ex-teacher. The neighborhood has changed a lot, and property values have pierced the sky, so the endearing couple puts their place on the market and start shopping for a new home. An alleged terrorist threat snarls traffic in the city, and there’s an even lessrelevant story about a sick dog. TV RELEASES The movie only functions “House of Cards: Season on the charm of Keaton 3” and Freeman, while the “Married With Children -plot -- especially those The Complete Series” little subplots -- are like “The Brokenwood roads to nowhere. It’s a Mysteries, Series 1” common pitfall for book- “Witches of East End: The to-movie adaptations. Still, Complete Season 2” it’s a sweet and smart look “Barney Miller: The Final at the far end of long-term Season” love. (c) 2015 King Features “71” (R) -- A young British Synd., Inc.

No Opt Outs in the Ad Game
--As any watcher of sports on television can tell you, commercials are unavoidable. Not only are they pervasive, they are repetitious -- sometimes, I would argue, to a fault. We understand that people need to hear a message more than once to get the point. I’m pretty sure that’s Merchandising and Advertising 101. But when is it enough? The major brands out there -- the soft drinks, phone companies and financiers -- change it up every once in a while, introducing new characters and songs. And they pretty much know when people aren’t into the ad anymore. For instance, when seeing a certain brand of luxury car reminds you of Jim Carrey imitating Matthew McConaughey’s creepy ad, you know it’s time to retire that commercial. When the only people on Twitter taking the time to type #sirloin are the people telling you they hate the commercial where they’re told to type #sirloin, it may be time for change. At one point or another, all of us have lent a hand or given to a charity of some sort. Maybe you canvassed the neighborhood for Easter Seals, threw a few extra bucks into the second collection at church, volunteered your time or work for a non-profit. We appreciate the efforts of all the non-smokers’ alliances and the antitrans-fat corps and all of

the other groups out there with noble causes, spending their money on precious advertising time. The networks thank them, too. And so do the ad firms and all the people that are in the industry. But I gotta tell ya, it’s getting to the point where you’re praying for the players to play in perpetuity because you know if they stop for any reason -- a pitching change, a technical foul, multiple penalties to sort out -- it means you’re going to have to watch the guy pop out his eyeball, tear off his legs and rip out his jaw again during the station break. As a fan, you should not have to hope that Don Mattingly blows Clayton Kershaw’s arm out because you’re afraid that if he stops pitching for even a second, it means you have to be subjected to a colonic camera view and thrust on another journey through the fat layers surrounding the liver of the guy who wanted to have a Fanta. Watching a full seven-game series or a Stanley Cup win on home ice should be exciting, but there’s a difference between the exhilaration of having witnessed a nail biter for the ages as opposed to being left a complete neurotic with borderline PTSD because of the public service announcements. Whatever happened to frying an egg and just saying no? #I’mJustSayin Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in Kansas City. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
