Herbert Lester McDowell Jr, “Jerry”, 74 of Providence, NC passed away on May 24th, 2015 after a decline in health over the past year. Mr. McDowell was born on November 15th, 1940. He was the son of the late Herbert Lester McDowell Sr. and Louise Ware McDowell. He lived all his life in Providence, N.C., where he farmed and also retired from Corning Glass Works in Danville, VA. He loved bass fishing and spending time at the Outer Banks of N.C. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Mark McDowell. Mr. McDowell is survived by his wife Janet McDowell of the home; and three sons, Herbert McDowell III of Pelham NC, John McDowell(Kimberly) of Rowland NC, Scott McDowell(Christina) of Pelham NC; five grandchildren, Elliott McDowell, Houston McDowell, Scotlyn McDowell, William McDowell and Peyton Barber. Ray S. Lambert

Ray S. Lambert, age 85, of Brookwood Assistant Living, died on May 22, 2015 at Danville Regional Medical Center. He was born on October 17, 1929, in Alabama, to the late Robert Fanton Lambert Sr. and Effie Jones Lambert. Mr. Lambert was a retired postal worker, and he was a member of the Tabernacle Church in Alabama. He was a veteran of the United States Army where he served during the Koran War. He is survived by his wife, Joy Nell Lambert of Brookwood Assistant Living and daughter, Jennifer Owens and husband Mark of Ringgold, VA; grandchildren, Channon Marie Owens Loubriel of Danville and Sondra LeAnn Owens of Ringgold; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents Mr. Lambert was predeceased by his brother, Robert Fanton Lambert Jr. and sister, Gladys Lambert Gray. A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at Swicegood Funeral Home. Jesse Wilson Hammack

Jesse Wilson Hammack, 73, of 3084 R & L Smith R o a d , Danville, Va., died Sunday, May 24, 2015 at his residence. He was born June 5, 1941 in Pittsylvania County, Va. to the late Emma Towler Hammack and the late James Russell Hammack. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Jane Jordan Hammack. Mr. Hammack proudly served his country for six years in the Army National Guard. He retired from Hickson Dan Chemical. Mr. Hammack also worked as a beekeeper for 47 years. He was a member of Faith Memorial Baptist Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter Kim Welborn and husband, Matt; his sons: Glen Hammack and wife, Rebecca, Russell Hammack and wife, Jacqueline, and James Hammack and wife, Carolyn; his sisters: Emma “Peggy” Welborn, and late husband, Larry, and Shelby Strange and husband, Tommy; his brother Clyde Hammack and wife, Marilyn; as well as 15 grandchildren. Jeffrey Daniel Bell, 52, of Northside Martinsville, VA passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2015 at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County, VA. He was born on April 16, 1963 in Martinsville, VA to the late Daniel Washington Bell, and Marie Vaughn Bell. In addition to his parents he is predeceased by his sister Deborah Bell Cox. Mr. Bell graduated from Martinsville High School and attended Danville Community College. He worked as a manager at SmurfitStone Container Company. Mr. Bell was a long time member of the Elks Lodge #1752 and of the N.R.A. Jeffrey also served in the United States Army. He is survived by his daughter Brittany Bell Haney and husband, Michael of Reidsville, NC; his son, Matthew Daniel Bell and wife, Carmella of Cannon Air Force Base, NM; one sister, Carolyn Bell Davis and husband, Michael of Martinsville, VA; one nephew, Andrew Davis and wife, Gretchen of San Diego, CA and one niece, Ashley Cox Greenway and husband, Richard of Madison, NC. Russell Hayward Robertson, 71, of Martinsville, VA passed away at his home on Tuesday, May 26, 2015. He was born on April 14, 1944 in Martinsville, VA to the late Luther James Robertson and Susie Morris Robertson. In addition to his parents he is predeceased by his three brothers, Gerald Lee Robertson, James Clarence Robertson, and Donnie Ray Robertson and one daughter, Susan Annette Robertson. Mr. Robertson was an employee of Prillaman and Pace. He also worked for James Clark Construction. Mazie Joyce Campbell Wilson, 85, of Amherst passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at Lynchburg General Hospital. Born in Nelson County, April 6, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Viola Rae Campbell. Rachel Janney Crumpton

Rachel Janney Crumpton, age 76 of Caswell House, Y a n c eyville, NC went to be with her Lord and Savior Thursday, May 28, 2015. She was born June 4, 1938 in Rockingham, NC to the late Jessie James Janney and the late Christine Wright Janney. Rachel married Eli Loyd Crumpton, Jr. in 1956 who preceded her in death in 2002. She was a member of Community Baptist Church in Yanceyville, NC where she was active in the Nursery Ministry. Mrs. Crumpton retired from Dan River Mills, Inc. after 42 years of service. Mrs. Crumpton is survived by a daughter, Betty Crumpton Helm (Josh) of Providence, NC; a brother, Bobby Janney of Newport News, VA; a biological grandson, Cameron Eli Helm; two chosen grandchildren, Daniel Myers and Jason Myers. Patricia Curtis “Pat” Fisher

Patricia Curtis “Pat” Fisher, 73, of 833 Robertson Lane, Danville, Va., died Friday, May 29, 2015 at her residence. She was born December 18, 1941 in Pittsylvania County, Va. to the late Martha Arnold Curtis and the late Carl Burton Curtis, Jr. She is survived by her loving husband, Edward W. Fisher of the residence. Mrs. Fisher obtained her Master’s Degree and worked as an infection control nurse for Danville Regional Medical Center for many years. She proudly supported her community by serving as an officer or held various board positions with several civic organizations, and was a former Chapter Chairman of the local American Red Cross. She was a member of Tuscarora Golf Club and enjoyed playing golf with Edward and the Ladies Golf Association. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter Robyn F. Owen who lives in Germany, and her son, Edward W. Fisher, Jr. of South Carolina, as well as three grandchildren. Private memorial services will be held at a later date. Eva Toney Witt, 87, of Roman E a g l e Health and Rehab Center, Danville, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, May 31, 2015. She was born March 17, 1928 in Amelia County, Va. to the late Ada Lee Lewis Toney and the late Emmett Walker Toney, Sr. On January 31, 1948, she married her loving husband, John M. Witt, Sr, who predeceased her. Mrs. Witt proudly served as a homemaker all her life in support of her family. She was of the Baptist faith. She is survived by her daughters Cora Hanks and husband Gary of Keeling, Janet Godwin and husband, James “Bimbo” of Keeling, Nola Bentley and husband David of Halifax, and Brenda A. Witt of Keeling. Surviving sons include Raymond and wife Brenda of Danville and Ernest and wife Jane of Ringgold. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 13 greatgrandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Witt was predeceased by three brothers, two sisters and a son, Johnny. Leo Edward “Beaver” Hollingsworth, 64, of 399 Jeffries Rd., Pelham, NC, died, Thursday, May 28, 2015 at this residence. Born January 17, 1951 in Bramwell, WVA, he was the son of the late Edward and Evalena Mitchell Hollingsworth. He was married to Evelyn Bazemore Hollingsworth, who survives. Warner Pritchett, 79, of 124 Davis Street, Danville, VA died Friday, May 29, 2015 at A n n i e Penn Hospital in Reidsville, NC. He was born June 21, 1935 in Pittsylvania County, VA a son of the late Ralph McLaughlin and the late Frances Pritchett Hereford. He was married to Eloise Blackwell Pritchett, who survives. In addition to his wife, survivors include one sister, Sherby P. Freeman of Danville, VA; one brother, Isadore “Bobby” Pritchett of Danville, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, Larry Hereford. The family will receive friends at the residence. Alice Mae Chaney

Alice Mae Chaney, 85, of 233 Belmeade Ct., Danville, VA, died, Saturday, May 30 2015 at the Danville Regional Medical Center. Born August 11, 1929 in Pittsylvania County, VA, she was the daughter of the late James Oliver Turner and the late Nettie Mae Martin Ferrell. She was married to the late James Chaney, Jr. Survivors include one daughter, Jackie Witcher of Danville, VA; three sons, Larry D. Chaney of St. Louis, MO, Steward J. Chaney of Salem, VA and Ricky M. Chaney of Danville, VA; two sisters, Ruby Pritchett of Danville, VA and Ella Fallen of Alexandria, VA; one brother, Robert H. Turner of Danville, VA; one stepbrother, Harvey Ferrell of Danville, VA and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Derrick Wayne Smith, 58, of 213 Northm o n t B l v d . , Danville, VA, died, Saturday, May 30, 2015 at the Danville Regional Medical Center. Born December 11, 1956 in Danville, VA, he was the son of the late Donald Wainwright Smith and Kay Williams Smith, who survives. He was married to Marguerite Lee McCampbell Smith, who survives. In addition to his wife of the residence and his mother of Danville, VA, survivors include two daughters, Deena Marie Smith of New York, NY and Danielle Kay Smith of Sterling, VA; three sons, Donald Joseph Smith of Richmond, VA, David Bruce Smith and Darrell Smith, both of Danville, VA; one sister, Janice Harris of Danville, VA; two brothers, Darrell Smith and Kelvin Smith, both of Danville, VA and a host of other relatives and friends. Carroll Winford Elliott, 73, of 325 Turpin Street, Danville, VA died on Monday, June 1, 2015 in the Hospice of Rockingham County after being in declining health for the past eighteen months. Carroll was born in Danville, VA on June 28, 1941 a son of the late Luther Herman Elliott and Belva Wells Elliott. He was a graduate of the former Whitmell Farm Life High School and he graduated from Broadcasting School in Atlanta, GA. Carroll, known as (Don Carroll) on the radio, worked in Broadcasting his entire life having worked in radio with stations WDVA, WAKG Bluegrass Hall of Fame on
