Governor McAuliffe Confirmed Speaker for IT Academy Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Governor Terry McAuliffe will provide the keynote address and participate in the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center’s IT Academy. The ceremony will take place on Tuesday, June 23rd at 3:00pm in the lobby of the SVHEC’s 820 Bruce Street Building. “The hands-on, intensive nature of the IT Academy allows students to quickly learn the skills they need to be successful in the workplace,” said Dr. Betty Adams, SVHEC Executive Director. “Initiatives like this are critical to closing the skills gap, and preparing the region with skilled workers needed for jobs available right here, right now,” she continued. SVHEC IT Manager and IT Academy Project Manager echoed Adams’ stating, “IT Academy is a collaboration with local industry to provide local workforce training, delivered in an affordable, hands-on condensed model, aligned with entry level IT jobs in southern Virginia.” The SVHEC IT Academy (ITA) is an authorized CompTIA educational training partner. Short-term, hands-on training leading to CompTIA credentials in A+, Network+ and Server+ will be offered to adult learners. Individuals who complete the entire core curriculum will have the skills necessary to work in Southern Virginia’s growing IT sector. Anyone interested in earning the identified CompTia credentials can sign up now. Classes for the first cohort will begin in August. ITA training will take place in the SVHEC’s new state-of-the-art lab. The renovated, 5,013 sq.ft. ITA lab has several learning environments including a data center, hardware repair center, computer based classroom, and conference area. The training space was designed to give program participants hands-on experience in an environment that replicates a datacenter. “Our goals are to prepare students to pass the CompTIA certification exams and to provide significant hands-on experience using practical lab exercises,” said ITA Project Manager/Trainer Kelly Shotwell. The IT Academy Ribbon Cutting Ceremony will take place on June 23rd at 3:00pm. Individuals planning to attend the ceremony should RSVP via email to HYPERLINK “mailto:events@svhec.org” events@svhec.org or call 434-5725566.

American Legion Post 1097’s Honor Guard was Honored May 27th 2015 with a breakfast and award presentation at Swicegood Barker Funeral Home.

1. Who had a hit with “It Hurts To Be in Love”? 2. Name the Bobby Lewis hit that was used in the 1978 “Animal House” soundtrack. 3. What song was released by all of these: Brian Hyland (1962), Gary Lewis and the Playboys (1968) and Bobby Vinton (1972). 4. Which rock group released the “Demons and Wizards” album? 5. Name the song that contains this lyric: “Goodbye, Norma Jean, Though I never knew you at all, You had the grace to hold yourself, While those around you crawled.” Answers 1. Gene Pitney, 1964. Neil Sedaka was supposed to record the song, and he did, but his record company wouldn’t let it be released because Sedaka hadn’t recorded it in their studio. 2. “Tossin’ and Turnin’,” recorded in 1961. 3. “Sealed With a Kiss,” Hyland re-released the song in 1975. 4. Uriah Heep, in 1972. Legend says the gatefold album cover contained an erotic image. 5. “Candle in the Wind” by Elton John and Bernie Taupin, in 1973, in honor of Marilyn Monroe. In 1997, John rewrote the song (called “Goodbye England’s Rose”) as a tribute to Diana, Princess of Wales, upon her death. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Remembering The First Date A woman awakes in the middle of the night to find her husband not in bed. She puts on her robe and goes downstairs to look for him. She finds him sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of hot cocoa in front of him. He appears to be deep in thought, just staring at the wall. She watches as he wipes away a tear from his eye. “What’s the matter dear?” she whispers as she steps into the room. “Why are you down here at this time of night!?” The husband looks up from his drink, “It’s the 20th anniversary of the day we met.” She can’t believe he has remembered. She starts to tear up. The husband continues solemnly, “Do you remember 20 years ago when we started dating? I was 18 and you were only 15.” Once again, the wife is touched to tears thinking that her husband is so caring and sensitive. “Yes, I do,” she replies. The husband pauses... the words were not coming easily. “Do you remember when your father caught us in the back seat of my car?” “Yes, I remember,” said the wife, lowering herself into a chair beside him. The husband continued. “Do you remember when he shoved the shotgun in my face and said, ‘Either you marry my daughter or I will make sure you spend the next 20 years in prison?’” “I remember that too,” she replied softly... He sighed as he wiped another tear away from his cheek and said, “I would have gotten out today.”

BY BILL DYER Special to the Piedmont Shopper Not that I’m a Jimmie Johnson fan, but how can NASCAR hold what they call a Sprint Cup driver’s council -- in which high-ranking NASCAR officials met with drivers on Saturday at Dover International Speedway to discuss the betterment of the sport -- and exclude a sixth-time champion. Not having been invited is like having a birthday party without the cake. Steve O’Donnel, executive vice president and chief racing development officer of NASCAR, said the initial session of the council was something that has been in the making for some time. “It’s something we’ve always done in terms of meeting with the drivers,” O’Donnel said. “We certainly meet with them individually, and we have met during the preseason more formally. It has gone really well in terms of opening the dialogue among the drivers and track owners. It’s something the drivers had talked about, and we have looked at it as a potential formation of a driver’s council. “It was the first formal, if you want to call it that, of bringing the drivers together.” Well said Mr. O’Donnel, but how can you leave out a driver with the credentials that Johnson possesses and call a meeting among a handful of drivers that spend most of their Sunday afternoons chasing Johnson. And you can add Matt Kenseth’s name to the uninvited list. Denny Hamlin, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kevin Harvick were among the eight or nine drivers that got the call to attend the meeting. O’Donnel said NASCAR had asked the drivers to select a panel that represented all of the manufactures and a wide range of teams ranked throughout the point standings, as well as a mix of youth and experience. Except for the youth part of the selection, Johnson and Kenseth fit the mold. Some sources said the creation of a council meeting was formed because of the persisting rumors of a driver’s union, which NASCAR unfalteringly refuses to discuss. “Everyone had a voice,” O’Donnel said. “The drivers are the first line when talking about the sport. They need to feel good about where we’re going as a sport and what they are driving. We’re not always going to agree. That’s not the purpose of the meeting.” Have all the meetings you want, but its still “my way or the highway” when it comes to what and how things will be in the future of the sport. And that’s rather sad. Tough road for Busch: In two point races since returning from an injury, Kyle Busch has been running well late in the race only to be thwarted by fuel mileage or a lapped car. With an average finish of 23.5, Busch needs much better results if he’s to make the Chase. Here’s what Busch faces after finishing 36th at Dover on Sunday: • Busch has scored only 42 points in two races back. • Busch needs 378 points to rank 30th and be Chase eligible (a win would provide the tiebreaker as long as that driver also hasn’t won). • Because Busch needs a win, worth at least 47 points, he must score 331 points in the other 12 races before the Chase. • Busch must average 27.6 points a race – about a 17th-place finish – in those 12 final races before the Chase to meet the requirement. (All quotes are from reliable NASCAR sources.)

“The High Cost of Salvation” The most precious thing in all of time and eternity is at once both entirely free and the most expensive thing ever purchased. Salvation costs nothing to the one who receives it, but only because the amazingly, incomprehensibly high price was paid in full by another. The apostle Peter said “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.”

Better Health in 15 Minutes

age of 65 for 13 years. The results were as follows: Those who did the 150 minutes a week of moderate exercise (for example, brisk walking) had a 57 percent lower risk of death. That’s significantly more than the 30 percent previously calculated for that level of exercise. The big news, however, for those of us who aren’t fans of exercise, is that 15 minutes a day, five days a week, is a good target for seniors. That can include swimming, riding a bike, brisk walking, dancing, ping-pong, badminton -- anything that gets you moving for 15 minutes. Granted, that 15 minutes a day (or 75 minutes per week) only gets you a 22 percent lower risk for mortality, but it’s a start. My theory: Once we start with that 15 minutes, we’re likely to increase it a little at a time. Bump that up a few minutes per day, and we can raise that to a 51 percent lower risk.

--Now this is one piece of research I can really get behind: Exercising less than the recommended 30 minutes a day still has benefits. Until now, 30 minutes a day (or 150 minutes a week) of moderate exercise has been the gold standard. It was shown to reduce the average risk of death by 30 percent. However, new research has shown that the recommended level of exercise didn’t consider the needs and health of seniors -- more than 60 percent of whom weren’t up to doing that much exercise (and were therefore likely to be discouraged from trying at all). A French study monitored the health and activity (c) 2015 King Features levels of seniors over the Synd., Inc.

When Jesus died on Calvary, He paid a price that human minds have difficulty comprehending. Many years ago, a lawyer named Earl Wingo examined the trial of Jesus, examined the laws of the Jews and the Romans, and determined that 18 laws were broken in order to put Jesus to death. Yet Isaiah said that he “opened not his mouth.” Matthew 27:26 tells us that he was scourged. A thousand years or so before it happened, Psalm 129:3 prophetically described it as plowers plowing on his back. Isaiah tells us that his beard was physically yanked off of his face, and that people spit in his face, beat him in the face, and yet he did not hide his face from any of it. The result was that his face became “marred more than

any man.” Mark tells us that a crown of thorns was placed on his head; inch long, pliable thorns that pierced the skin, hit the skull bone, and turned like a fishhook to exit somewhere else. Mark further says that they smote him on the head with a reed, and the tense used indicates that they did it over and over again. A concussion was inevitable, perhaps even multiple concussions. Judas, a man he regarded as a friend, betrayed him. The disciples in general fled in fear. Peter denied he even knew him, going so far as to curse when he did so. They took his clothing before crucifying him, leading the writer of Hebrews to say that he “despised the shame.” His hands and feet were pierced. There are around 7,800 nerve endings in each foot. The hands are even worse, with around 2,500 nerve endings per square centimeter in the hands. Having those nails driven through any part of the hands or feet, even the wrist or ankles, was absolute agony with every blow. When the cross was lifted up and then dropped into the hole with him already attached to it, Psalm 22:14 tells us that his bones came out of joint. He experienced severe dehydration, which normally leads to extreme headache, muscle cramps, and swelling of the tongue. Each of the

seven statements he made on the cross was an act of grace, spoken through the cracked lips of a dehydrated man. He had trouble breathing. When a person was crucified they usually drowned, as their lungs filled with fluid, or else their heart stopped beating when the pressure of the fluid around it got too great. The only way that a crucified person could breathe was to push up with his legs, thus putting his back in agony as the splinters from the cross dug into the open wounds. He had to watch his own mother weep in agony below his cross, breaking his own heart. He was, in his own words, forsaken by God, as our sins were poured out on Him. This was his own Father! He lived a sinless life, yet Paul told the Corinthians that he “became sin for us.” It is for all of this that the aged apostle John said that Jesus was the propitiation, the satisfaction for our sin. Simply put, no one else did this for you, no one else could have ever done this for you, so nothing and no one else will satisfy God the Father.

As you go about your day today, remember the cross, remember the cost.

Danville Science Center Demonstrates How People Make Things June 13, 2015 – January 10, 2016 On Saturday, June 13, Danville Science Center opens How People Make Things – unveiling how everyday objects are produced and manufactured. Guests will be able to get hands-on with activities using real factory tools and machines that demonstrate manufacturing processes in a fun and safe way. Inspired by segments from Mister Roger’s Neighborhood television series, the featured exhibition explores behind-the-scenes processes of how items are created inside of factories. “How People Make Things demonstrates four main manufacturing processes: cutting, molding, deforming and reassembling,” explains Adam Goebel, Executive Director of Danville Science Center. “Not only will guests be able to try out tools like rolling mills and die cutters, but they will be able to learn the science behind creating common household items like soda bottles and baseball bats.” Find out how wax and plastic are used in molding materials as you operate a three-axis mill to carve a block of wax. Learn about cutting tools like the computerized cutting machine, assemble a trolley replica or use your own hands to put together a real golf cart. This summer guests can also step into the Science Center’s digital dome theater for breathtaking presentations on a 40-foot screen. Migrate with millions of butterflies, tumble with pandas in bamboo forests and take a wild ride through the solar system. The possibilities are endless! Tickets to Danville Science Center and a feature in the digital dome theater are $10 with $1 discounts for children 4-12 and 60+. For more information, visit dsc.smv.org or call 434.791.5160. Danville Science Center Demonstrates How People Make Things. Danville Science Center, 677 Craghead Street, Danville, Virginia.

20 for 20th Underway at Gateway Health Danville, Va. – In honor of its 20th Anniversary, Gateway Health employees are giving back to the community by donating “20” hours of community service this year. The first major community contribution was a booth at Danville’s annual Festival in the Park. Gateway Health set up a “Well Check Station” for festival goers to get their blood pressure checked completely free of charge by Gateway Health Registered Nurses. Over 225 blood pressure checks were given. Wellness Nurse Team Leader, Kelly Owen, RN, stated, “With the weather being so warm, we definitely saw some people with elevated blood pressures, which is a concern. We informed the festival attendees to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight, and not overexert themselves. We provided educational materials on blood pressure and tips for maintaining a healthy blood pressure.” Gateway nurses also encouraged those with elevated blood pressures to follow up with their Primary Care Physician to ensure that any blood pressure issues are being monitored and addressed appropriately. Untreated high blood pressure can lead to many serious complications such as, heart, lungs, kidney, and/or vision disorders or diseases. Founded in 1995, Gateway Health is a Danville-based medical benefits management company dedicated to providing employers with affordable, well-managed health plans and comprehensive worksite wellness services. Gateway Health’s innovative and unique approach to valued healthcare delivery serves the needs of employers, employees and providers.

Want to sell your property quickly? Certainly! When you decide to sell it, you want it done as soon and as painlessly as possible, but at the same time, you want to receive as much cash equity from the sale of your property as you think it’s worth. You bought your property at its base price. You added some things immediately to provide the comforts that you were looking for; items such as blinds and custom drapes, paddle fans, a microwave and a garage door opener. These all add to the value. How about that swimming pool the family convinced you to put in? How much was it: $15,000…or was it $16,000 when you added that extra decking? Did that wallpaper in the bedrooms and kitchen cost $1,300, or did that include the blinds? Other improvements include upgraded landscaping, more trees, shrubbery and flowers, a sprinkler system, fence and a unique mailbox up front. Now that you’ve itemized all of your improvements, you’re thinking, “How much is a new home like mine selling for now on the current market? Well, I’ll take what I paid and add in all of the above improvements, include appreciation for each year and that’s what I’ll ask for my price.” Unfortunately, pricing your property in this manner may give it an inflated value. Your property that you’re so proud of and which is worth so much to you, may just sit with a “For Sale” sign for a long period of time, with a lot of lookers but no buyers. Then, by the time seven or eight months go by, you realize that your price is too high and drop it accordingly. But now the buyers that may have been interested have bought elsewhere, the agents stop bringing prospects, it has been on the market so long it has lost its appeal, there must be something wrong with it for it not to have sold by now. You then get to the point where you’re going to have to price it for less than it should sell for just to move it and get on with your life at your new location. This can all be eliminated by logical thinking as opposed to emotional thinking. You’ve put blood, sweat and tears into your property. You’ve treated it with TLC (tender loving care) and it’s been great for you and your family. Logical thoughts include: 1) The benefits and pleasures your family has already derived from these improvements for which you will not recover full value. 2) Check out the properties presently on the market in your area that you’re going to compete with for sale, and their price. 3) Check the price of properties comparable to yours that sold within the last six months and determine how long they were on the market. 4) Remember, we may not have been enjoying the appreciation rate you expected over the entire period that you’ve owned the property. This logical, statistical approach is used by appraisers and agents when arriving at a fair market value price for your home. Your agent should prepare the Competitive Market Analysis (CMA) using this logical approach. In doing so, you’ll receive a professional estimate of value to help price your property in a sale range that will best meet your overall objectives.

* Here’s a grill tip just in time for summer: When you need to cook something that needs covering (say, chicken) alongside something that does not (like hot dogs), simply invert an aluminum roaster/cake pan over the needs-covering item. You can purchase smaller size pans that can be reused. -- JoAnn * “I have a tip about taking medicine. Regardless of the size of the pill, I always feel as if it is stuck in my throat. I have started to have a chunk of banana after taking a pill. I don’t get that stuck feeling anymore. -- T.B. in New Hampshire

* “The sticky residue from price tags can be really annoying. I use WD-40 to get it off. Works every time for me! -- J.K. in Alabama

* “Painting stairs? This tip will save your life! Paint every other step to start with. When they are dry, go back and paint the others. This way, you can use the staircase anytime during your project. This is particularly important if the stairs are the only way to get to bed after a long day of painting! -- I.L. in Nevada * Mix a quarter cup of salt in with two tablespoons of bath wash for a sudsy, refreshing, skin-soothing salt scrub. * To travel with pleated skirts, use this packing trick: Turn the skirt inside out, and straighten all the pleats. Then tape the bottom so that all the pleats are held together. Next, feed the skirt into a leg of pantyhose with the foot cut off. You’ll end up with a nice tube, which you can tuck into the side of your luggage. Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475. Buddy Lee Doll ---

Q: I have a Buddy Lee doll that I received in the late 1940s. It is still dressed in its original Lee overalls and cap. I rarely played with this doll, so although it is not mint, it is in excellent condition. I have been offered $150 for it, but thought I would check with you first. -- Barbara, Laguna Beach, California A: Buddy Lee dolls have molded hair, painted eyes and are jointed at the shoulder, with stiff hips and legs. They are dressed in Lee clothes. Most of the Buddy Lee dolls I have seen do not have their original clothes, so this makes the one you have especially desirable. Ones with composition heads were made during the 1920-1948 period, and the later ones with heads of hard plastic from 1949-1962. There were other variations, too. For example, Buddy Lee dressed in a Coca-Cola uniform, John Deere clothing and as a gasstation attendant also were manufactured. According to “Blue Book Dolls & Values” by Jan Foulke and published by Hobby House Press, your doll is valued in the $450 to $550 range, so my advice is explore more options before you accept the offer you have. *** Q: I have about a dozen perfume bottles that originally belong to my grandmother. Most of

the bottles seem to be from the 1930s and ‘40s. How can I find out more about them? -- Steve, Rye, New York A: One of the better organizations for collectors is the International Perfume Bottle Association. Contact is www.perfumebottles. org, and 732-4922003. There are several excellent references. One of my favorites is “The Wonderful World of Collecting Perfume Bottles: Identification & Value Guide” by Jane Flanagan and published by Collector Books. *** Q: I have a large-size book of Norman Rockwell illustrations, suitable for framing. How much are they worth, and how can I find a buyer? -- Eva, Olney, Illinois A: Your question is impossible for me to answer. You did not provide me with the edition and publisher. Without that information, I cannot establish a value. Most Norman Rockwell collections I’ve seen have generally sold in the $25 to $75 range, again, depending on condition, edition and publisher. Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. Due to the large volume of mail he receives, Mr. Cox cannot personally answer all reader questions, nor does he do appraisals. Do not send any materials requiring return mail. Q: My sister told me that Bradley Cooper is going to star in a network TV show, but I told her that can’t be true, because he has a huge movie career. -- Bobby S., Fresno, California A: That’s mostly true. CBS has picked up the drama series “Limitless,” which is a continuation of the hit 2001 movie that starred Bradley in the lead role of Eddie Mora. Bradley does appear in the pilot episode, reprising his movie role, and will recur throughout the season as his schedule permits. This is a new show I definitely plan to keep an eye on. *** Q: Nooo! I read that Fox canceled “The Mindy Project.” Please tell me this isn’t true. -- Nina D., via email A: It’s true, however, it isn’t the end for “Mindy.” Hulu announce in midMay that it has ordered a 26-episode season four of the critically acclaimed series, to air exclusively on hulu.com. A premiere date for the fourth season has yet to be announced. Following the premiere, Hulu will have the option to order subsequent seasons. “I am thrilled that ‘The Mindy Project’ has found a new home on Hulu, where so many of our fans are already watching the show. It’s such an exciting place to be,” said series star and creator, Mindy Kaling. *** Q: I have never written to a reporter in my 77 years on Earth. I simply enjoy your column each and every Sunday in our local Florida paper. I felt compelled to write you because my new favorite guilty pleasure is “Battle Creek,” which I hear is already canceled. Every character had a unique role, and the way Russ (played by Dean Winters) and Milt (Josh Duhamel) interact is hilarious.

Bradley Cooper Thank you for reading this. -- Rosemarie C., via email A: You’d think that with the likes of Kal Penn, Candice Bergen and Patton Oswalt also involved, the show would be a shooin for a second-season pickup. The renewal gods are a strange lot, and it sometimes just comes down to timing. Perhaps if “Battle Creek” had premiered in the summer on a network like TNT or FX -- networks that are known for nurturing and taking time with their new shows -- it would have had more of a chance. *** READERS: Here are the Fox shows that have been renewed and canceled, starting with the renewed shows: “Bob’s Burgers,” “Bones,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Empire,” “Family Guy,” “Gotham,” “Hell’s Kitchen,” “MasterChef,” “MasterChef Junior,” “New Girl,” “The Last Man on Earth,” “The Simpsons,” “Sleepy Hollow,” “So You Think You Can Dance” and “World’s Funniest Fails.” TV shows that have either ended their run or been canceled include: “American Idol” (after season 15, which begins January 2016), “Backstrom,” “The Following” (although it is being shopped elsewhere), “Gang Related,” “Glee,” “Gracepoint,” “Kitchen Nightmares,” “The Mindy Project” (see Hulu announcement above), “Mulaney,” “Red Band Society,” “Utopia” and “Weird Loners.” Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475; or e-mail her at letters@cindyelavsky.com. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
