The Pearly Gates A minister dies and is waiting in line at the Pearly Gates. Ahead of him is a guy who’s dressed in sunglasses, a loud shirt, leather jacket, and jeans. Saint Peter addresses this guy: “Who are you, so that I may know whether or not to admit you to the Kingdom of Heaven?” The guy replies: “I’m Joe Cohen, taxi driver, of Noo Yawk City.”
Jam on The Dan Returns July 16th! DANVILLE – Music lovers can rock on the river Saturday, July 16 when Danville Harvest Jubilee’s Jam on the Dan returns to the Carrington Pavilion. This year’s tribute show will feature Head Games, A Tribute to Foreigner; Hysteria, a Greatest Hits Tribute to Def Leppard, and Bad Inc., A Bad Company/ Paul Rodgers Tribute. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. and the show starts at 5 p.m. Tickets cost $12 and can be purchased online at DanvilleHarvestJubilee.org, at the Danville Welcome Center or by calling 434-793-4636. All seating is general admission. Tickets available at the gate while supplies last. Lawn chairs permitted in designated areas. No umbrellas. Jam on the Dan is sponsored by Budweiser, CocaCola, Centra Medical Group, Danville Toyota Scion, The Homeplace Vineyard, URW Community Federal Credit Union, Big Sky Rents and Events, the City of Danville and Texas Steakhouse and Saloon.
St. Peter consults his list. He smiles and says to the taxi driver, “Take this silken robe and golden staff and enter the Kingdom of Heaven.” The taxi driver goes into Heaven with his robe and staff, and it’s the minister’s turn. He stands erect and booms out, “I am Joseph Snow, pastor of my church for the last forty-three years.” St. Peter consults his list. He says to the minister, “Take this cotton robe and wooden staff and enter the Kingdom of Heaven.” “Just a minute,” says the minister. “That man was a taxi driver, and he gets a silken robe and golden staff. How can this be?” “Up here, we work by results,” says Saint Peter. “While you preached, people slept; while he drove, people prayed.”

While he might have been a normal child in June of 1947, that was about the end of it. At some point he realized he was too smart for his own good, and was admitted to the University of Virginia. While it is entirely possible he learned course content, this was never mentioned in lieu of speaking about fraternity houses shooting flaming arrows at each other’s roofs and how he had to “walk 15 miles uphill in winter” to get to class. He enlisted into the Army at the height of the Vietnam War, which in his words, “sucked muy much.” Despite his terrible eyesight, he was only one target away from qualifying as a sharpshooter. “Shall We Gather At The River” I suppose most pastors do not have cigarettes in their office. I currently do. I do not apologize for that, in fact, I am thrilled by it. Please allow me to explain. For several years now our church has been fulfilling a burden to reach the homeless with the gospel of Jesus Christ and the hope that he can give them both in eternity and in this life as well. It has been one of the most rewarding things we have ever done. We have seen men saved, baptized, and joining the church. We have also seen some of them get back on their feet and, where we were giving them a ride to church, they now drive to church each and every service on their own. One in particular is now returning the favor; he himself goes out and picks up homeless folks and brings them to church in his own vehicle.
I have left is the cigarettes, and I’m down to just a few a day on them.” Smiling from ear to ear, he capped it off with, “Pastor, will you baptize me in the river? I want to be baptized just like Jesus was.” The old hymn began to flow through my heart. “Shall we gather at the river, where bright angel feet have trod, with its crystal tide forever, flowing by the throne of God...” I explained to this excited gentleman that the waters of the river were not in any way “spiritually superior” to the waters of a baptistery. He was well aware of that, he assured me, but he still wanted to be baptized in a river if it was possible. It just so happens I have access to a river.
He and I hugged and laughed and rejoiced over what God has done in his At an activity recently, he brought two gentlemen that life. We made plans for him have been coming to church to join the church, and to be baptized in the river near here for several months now. One of those wonderful my house. You know, when God allowed us to move men told me how God has changed his life dramatically there, this possibility never since he got saved just nine occurred to me. It was my oldest daughter, on the months ago. way home, who laughingly “He took it all from me!” he said, “Baptist pastor. River. What exactly did you expect, said excitedly. “The drugs, the liquor, even the hooch!” dad?” Then he said, “the only vice
The hymn continued in my thoughts. “Soon we’ll reach the shining river, soon our pilgrimage will cease; soon our happy hearts will quiver with the melody of peace...” And so we shall soon gather at the river. We will do as millions before us have done, and symbolize the fact that an old life has died and a new one in Christ has begun. Old things have passed away, behold, all things have become new. And how new? What does salvation do for a person? Make your way back with me momentarily to a pack of cigarettes in my office... Near the end of the night our dear saved brother who is now eagerly awaiting baptism came to me holding his hand out and smiling as he did. “Take them, preacher. I don’t want them anymore.” “Yes we’ll gather at the river, the beautiful, the beautiful river, gather with the Saints at the river that flows by the throne of God.” And so I have cigarettes in my office. And for all I know they may be here for quite a while. Each time I look at them they bring a smile to my face thinking of just how drastically being saved by the blood of Christ can change a life.

Green Nail Syndrome Is Not Easy to Treat ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: For the past four months, I have had an infection around the cuticle of my right index finger. There is green coloration under the nail near the cuticle, and the nail grew rather deformed. I am a gardener and a homemaker, so I tend to wash my hands often. The urgent-care doctor I saw prescribed clindamycin and mupirocin cream. I also was told to soak my finger twice a day. My family doctor took a culture and, because she did not know if I had a fungus or an infection, prescribed Lamisil and levofloxacin. She also recommended saltwater or peroxide soaks twice daily. The culture showed pseudomonas as the cause of the infection. With no improvement, I saw an orthopedic doctor. He told me to continue the soaking and the mupirocin cream. On my second visit, he lanced the area between the cuticle and the nail bed. There was improvement, but the symptoms soon return. The orthopedic doctor spoke of removing the nail as a possible solution to clearing up the infection. Is this my next step, or is there something else I can do? -- P.B. ANSWER: It sounds as though you have the aptly named “green nail syndrome,” which is caused by the bacteria you mention, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and which often is complicated by a paronychia, an infection along the side of the nail. Your orthopedic surgeon is quite right that sometimes the nail needs to be removed; however, many people can avoid that unpleasant procedure (I had to perform it once) with ciprofloxacin (the best oral antibiotic
against pseudomonas), antiseptic soaks and by keeping the hands meticulously dry, using gloves and even using a hairdryer to dry the nails after soaking or cleaning. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 67-year-old male who has had mild to moderate psoriasis for the past seven years or so. I have been avoiding the very effective biological drugs because of the scary possible side effects. Instead, I use anti-itch topical creams and lotions, some with cortisone. In researching the topic, I ran across a treatment called Fumaderm that is available in Germany, but I have never heard of it being used in the U.S. -- C.S. ANSWER: Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin condition that can range from annoying to life-threatening in severity. Psoriasis and its common complication, psoriatic arthritis, together are a highly destructive arthritis that often requires powerful treatment: biologic agents, like adalimumab (Humira) or etanercept (Enbrel). These do have the possibility of serious side effects, such as reactivation of tuberculosis. Fumaderm has been used in Germany for 19 years with a generally good safety record. There have been reports of a disease, PML, caused by brain virus, associated with Fumaderm, although it isn’t clear whether the Fumaderm predisposed the individuals to develop this infection. No medicine is free of the possibility of side effects, and treatment for psoriasis should be appropriate for the degree of severity of the illness. If you are doing well enough with your current treatment, I wouldn’t recommend trying a treatment with a higher risk of serious side effects. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. keep repeating answers to the question about why we’re still working, and try to explain the sense of accomplishment we get from continuing to work. This can be wearing. Instead, when the friendships no longer fit, look for socializing opportunities in new areas where you don’t have to justify what you’re doing. There is one bonus to continuing to work, despite the push to retire. Studies have shown that retiring early can shorten one’s life, especially if we’ve worked for years. Another study of 6,000 participants showed that we’ll have a 15 percent lower risk of death if we maintain a purpose in our life and keep working. Anxiety and depression can be a result of retiring when we really don’t want to. If you’re considering retiring, take a look at this book before you do. Go online to Amazon.com and you’ll find it in paperback, hard copy and for Kindle.
--What happens when your friends all retire and you don’t? “Women Still at Work: Professionals Over Sixty and On the Job,” by Elizabeth F. Fideler, explores why senior women are still working and what happens when we do. Fideler gathered her research from both surveys and in-depth interviews, comparing generations, economic climates and preferences. Why are senior women still working? We enjoy what we’re doing. We’re making contributions. We need the money or the health insurance that comes with (c) 2016 King Features the job. We’re trying to beef Synd., Inc. up our retirement nest egg. We get more out of being engaged on a daily basis with real challenges. What happens when our friends retire and we don’t? We miss opportunities for socializing, unless we take matters in hand and Red Bird Times organize time together Sponsored when we are available. We sometimes have to Column

PEEP TALK ! You don’t ever have to worry about anyone ceasing to read the Piedmont Shopper. My uncle, Henry D. Hopkins, is 87 years old & he goes somewhere to get a stack of them each week. He delivers them to the nursing home, and to his friends in his neighborhood. He makes sure everyone gets a copy every week! He and his wife Shirley love to share it and laugh at the jokes and stories. That paper is the heartbeat for a lot of people! My daughter, Ruby, sells Scentsy and she has used your paper for many occasions. She knows that is the one paper that everyone reads! Our church, Central Boulevard Church of God, just used your paper for our Vendor Spring Fling on 4/11/15, and I am sure half or more of the people came because of the Shopper!” -Deborah Severt

Renovations for Senior Safety As adults approach their golden years, the homes they once thought of as sanctuaries can become unsafe. Families wrestle with the decision to keep parents and grandparents in their homes or move them into assisted living facilities or other senior residences. Modifying seniors’ homes to make them safer is another option. The National Institute on Aging says that families may be able to have a senior stay at home by helping older relatives remain independent but safe. The following are a few ways to do just that. • Remove fall hazards. The NIA reports that six out of 10 falls happen at home, where people spend the most time and fail to think about their safety. Seniors who want to be independent may overestimate their physical abilities. Because falls can be so dangerous, leading to cuts, abrasions, broken bones, and more, seniors and their families must take steps to prevent falls in homes. Improve lighting, especially at night when sight may become diminished. Install hand rails and grab bars where possible. Pick up clutter and remove tripping hazards, such as slippery rugs or electric cords. Install an electric stair climbing seat to make traversing stairs less risky. • Improve visibility and ability to communicate. Vision loss may accompany aging, but technology can help mitigate such losses. Use big-button phones, remote controls and even keyboards so seniors can keep in touch. Voice-activated thermostats or smart home technology also can make it easier for seniors to voice their needs. • Modify fixtures and other features. Dexterity may wane with age, and arthritis can make grasping or turning doorknobs and faucets more challenging. Take inventory of areas of the home that present the biggest obstacles to seniors. Replace knobs in the shower or on faucets with lever handles, which are easier to maneuver. Install new cabinets and doors that freely glide open and self-close. Replace toggle light switches with easier paddle-type switches that can be pushed with a hand or even arm. Motion-sensor lights also can be handy. Push-button oven controls may make cooking easier. • Prepare for medical emergencies. Invest in medical alert systems, such as necklaces or bracelets, that can be used to contact police or emergency medical personnel directly. Make phones available in commonly used rooms in the home, such as bedrooms, the living room, bathrooms, and the kitchen. • Install ramps and nonslip flooring. Ramps can make it easier to reach the front door or cross over elevated doorway thresholds. Nonslip flooring also can prevent falls around the house, offering more traction for feet, walkers or canes. • Repair cracks in walkways and driveways. Safety should also extend to the outdoors. Be sure to repair cracks or uneven pavement. Replace loose patio blocks or bricks with a more stable design or with concrete or asphalt. While outdoors, trim back bushes and make sure there are no tripping hazards outside as well. A few modifications can make it possible for seniors to live comfortably in their homes for many years.

Operation Gratitude Operation Gratitude needs our help. Carolyn Blashek, founder of OpGrat, recently sent out a request for funds to ship 3,272 more care packages to troops currently deployed in dangerous areas. It costs $15 to send one box, so you can do the math. It needs a lot of dollars. Since its founding in 2003, Operation Gratitude has sent 1.5 million care packages to our activeduty men and women who are deployed overseas. Donations of items for the boxes are given by large corporations and small companies, individuals and groups. The boxes always contain excellent treats valued at nearly $100, and might include videos, flash drives, candy, books, toiletries, games and more. Each one contains letters from home. Sometimes there might be a key to a brand-new vehicle that will be waiting when the soldier, sailor, airman or Marine gets home. Additionally, OpGrat now sends packages to first responders, wounded heroes, new recruits and

more. But the postage ... that’s the big problem. There are no government handouts, no discounts from the Post Office. It’s all on us to help with that. OpGrat always does a big push at the holidays, and the goal this year is to send out 250,000 packages as they close in on the 2 million mark. If you can help out with the cost of mailing a couple of boxes, or even just a few dollars, send a check to: Operation Gratitude PO Box 260257 Encino, CA 91426-0257 Or visit www. operationgratitude. com for ways to donate online. Your donation is tax deductible. If you like to check out things out in advance (good for you, if you do), go online to CharityNavigator.com and hunt for Operation Gratitude. * You can calm flyaways by washing and conditioning your hairbrush. Wash all types in soap and water, and if your brush has natural bristles, dip it in a cup of water with a little conditioner added. Let it dry, and brush away with no more static. * Use plastic wrap to help out on paint jobs. It can protect odd-shaped items, like unremovable lighting fixtures. You also can give your paintbrush an overnight break when you wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and stick it in your fridge -- no washing required if you’re just pausing!
* Staple removers aren’t just for the office. Need to load a key ring? A staple remover will open those rings right up. * Coffee filters and used dryer sheets are both fantastic dusters for the dashboard of your car. Throw a few in the glove box for when the dash needs a quick dusting. * “You can get your shower liner clean in no time at all by throwing it in the washing machine. I do mine once a month in a load of towels for extra scrubbing.” -- R.R. in Washington

Using Cards Wisely WhyCredit are you still paying fees?
I am totally in favor of getting all I can get for free. I am puzzled by the fact so many people are still paying for things they can get for free. My question is why are you staying at a bank that is charging you fees for services that you do not have to pay for? In my research of bank fees these are just a few of the fees I discovered: • Fee to mail a paper statement instead of opting for an online statement • Fee to speak to a live person • Maintenance fee (A monthly fee that I found for savings and checking accounts) • Excessive activity fee • Inactivity fee If you are paying fees for services at your bank close that account and move to a financial institution that wants your business!

Ingredients: 1/3 cup honey 1/4 cup soy sauce (I use reduced sodium) 1 Tablespoon minced garlic optional: 1 teaspoon minced fresh ginger 1 lb medium uncooked shrimp, peeled & deveined1 2 teaspoons olive oil optional: chopped green onion for garnish Directions: Whisk the honey, soy sauce, garlic, and ginger (if using) together in a medium bowl. Place shrimp in a large zipped-top bag or tupperware. Pour 1/2 of the marinade mixture on top, give it all a shake or stir, then allow shrimp to marinate in the refrigerator for 15 minutes or for up to 8-12 hours. Cover and refrigerate the rest of the marinade for step 3. (Time-saving tip: while the shrimp is marinating, I steamed broccoli and microwaved some quick brown rice.) Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Place shrimp in the skillet. (Discard used marinade.) Cook shrimp on one side until no longer pink-- about 45 seconds-- then flip shrimp over. Pour in remaining marinade and cook it all until shrimp is cooked through, about 1 minute more. Serve shrimp with cooked marinade sauce and a garnish of green onion. The sauce is excellent on brown rice and steamed veggies on the side.
