“There is a Right Way for a Child to Go” It was my second job, the position as stocker/cashier at a big box retailer. My first job was on a farm, so I felt like I had moved up the comfort scale just a bit as a sixteen year old. Apparently, I soon realized, I had also moved up the hilarity scale just a bit as well. There is not much funny about bailing hay, cleaning up after one thousand rabbits, and mucking stalls. But a Gumby child throwing a tantrum over a toy? Oh yes...

result, and the screams had not subsided. People were coming out of stores to watch in fascinated horror. The mother ended up wrapping herself around his appendages, crawling into the back seat with him, locking the door behind her, strapping him in, and exiting out the other side, locking that door behind her.

He was about six or seven, and I happen to know that he was not in any way impaired. But he did have a temper, and soon every employee and customer in the store heard him screaming for a particular toy he saw and wanted. The young mother tried to distract him and keep going, but his bellowing screams only grew to Biblically epic proportions. Finally the mother, utterly humiliated, tried to leave the store with him. Notice that word “tried.”

One thing this re-affirmed for me is that children are born with a sin nature, and they demonstrate it early and often. Proverbs 29:15 says, “A child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.”

As she got him to the front door, the boy extended both arms and legs and snagged either side of the door frame like Spider Man. The mother pushed, and he “sproinged!” right back into place each time. Finally she pried each finger off, “Ploink! Ploink!” until at the tenth “ploink!” she had him out the door. Trying to get him into the car produced the same

Twenty-nine years ago, and I remember that kid like it was yesterday.

Modern parenting gurus often espouse letting children decide their own way, but that is a recipe for an embarrassed parent at some point. Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” I am struck in that verse by the fact that there is a way that a child should go, emphasis on “should.” Parents should never buy into the incredibly flawed notion that children should decide for themselves what is right and what is wrong and how to behave. There are ways that children want to go, and then there is the way that they should go. God gave them parents to

train them up in the “should” rather than to cater to the “want.” This applies to every area, including the great many areas where modern parents seem to fear to even tread. Clothing, anyone? We saw three girls in a mall in Georgia, they could not have been more than twelve or thirteen, dressed in less than the average fast food item wears. Dating? Those same girls had boys that looked to be ten years older than them literally pawing all over them in public. Parents, there are “wants” and then there is “should!” It is your job to train them up in the should. Is it possible that you will make them angry? No, it is more like virtually certain that you will make them angry at some point. But if your goal as a parent is to avoid making your children angry, then you do not understand what it means to be an actual parent, and your children will be all the worse for it.

The “want” is not what is important. The “should” is what is important.

Praise to God for a Living Hope “3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade-kept in heaven for you, 5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.”
