What building has the most stories? -A library, of course! DRMC Earns American College of Cardiology Platinum Award for Cardiac Care DRMC Earns American College of Cardiology Platinum Award for Cardiac Care NCDR ACTION Registry–GWTG Platinum award recognizes high standards Danville, Va. (July 21, 2015) –– Danville Regional Medical Center (DRMC) has received the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR ACTION Registry–GWTG Platinum Performance Achievement Award for 2015. DRMC is one of only 319 hospitals nationwide to receive the honor. The award recognizes DRMC’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients and signifies that DRMC has reached an aggressive goal of treating these patients to standard levels of care as outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations. To receive the ACTION Registry–GWTG Platinum Performance Achievement Award, DRMC consistently followed the treatment guidelines in the ACTION Registry–GWTG Premier for eight consecutive quarters and met a performance standard of 90 percent for specific performance measures. Full participation in the registry engages hospitals in a robust quality improvement process using data to drive improvements in adherence to guideline recommendations and overall quality of care provided to heart attack patients. “The American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association commend DRMC for its success in implementing standards of care and protocols. The full implementation of acute and secondary prevention guideline-recommended therapy is a critical step in saving the lives and improving outcomes of heart attack patients,” said James Jollis, MD, FACC, ACTION Registry-GWTG Chair and Professor of Medicine and Radiology at Duke University Hospital. The Center for Disease Control estimates that over 700,000 Americans suffer a heart attack each year. A heart attack occurs when a blood clot in a coronary artery partially or completely blocks blood flow to the heart muscle. Treatment guidelines include administering aspirin upon arrival and discharge, timely restoration of blood flow to the blocked artery, smoking cessation counseling and cardiac rehabilitation, among others. “This award is a proud achievement for DRMC. It reflects the hard work and dedication of the staff who care for some of our most seriously ill patients and their families,” said Spencer Thomas, Chief Operating Officer (COO). “The implementation of these guidelines requires successful coordination of the cardiovascular team and emergency personnel and is a critical step in saving the lives and improving outcomes of heart attack patients.” ACTION Registry–GWTG is a partnership between the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association with partnering support from the American College of Emergency Physicians and the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care. ACTION Registry-GWTG empowers health care provider teams to consistently treat heart attack patients according to the most current, science-based guidelines and establishes a national standard for understanding and improving the quality, safety and outcomes of care provided for patients with coronary artery disease, specifically high-risk heart attack patients. The American College of Cardiology is a 49,000-member medical society that is the professional home for the entire cardiovascular care team. The mission of the College is to transform cardiovascular care and to improve heart health. The ACC leads in the formation of health policy, standards and guidelines. The College operates national registries to measure and improve care, provides professional medical education, disseminates cardiovascular research and bestows credentials upon cardiovascular specialists who meet stringent qualifications. For more information, visit ACC.org. EMAIL Polly Want A ... So there’s this magician working on a small cruise ship. He’s been doing his routines every night for a year or two now. The audiences appreciate him, and they change over often enough that he doesn’t have to worry too much about new tricks. However, there’s this parrot who sits in the back row and watches him night after night, year after year. Finally, the parrot figures out how the tricks work and starts to give it away for the audience. For example, when the magician makes a bouquet of flowers disappear, the parrot squaks, “Behing his back! Behind his back!” Well, the magician gets really annoyed at this, but he doesn’t know what to do. The parrot belongs to the Captain, so he can’t just “make it disappear.” One day, the ship springs a leak and sinks. The magician manages to swim to a plank of wood floating by and grabs on. The parrot is sitting on the other end of the plank. They just stare at each other as they drift. They drift for 3 days and still don’t speak. On the morning of the fourth day, the parrot looks over at the magician and says, “OK, I give up. Where did you hide the ship?”

* It was Henry Brooks Adams, American historian and descendant of two U.S. presidents, who made the following sage observation: “They know enough who know how to learn.” * In show business, a name can make or break you, and many aspiring stars have tried to make themselves more appealing by getting rid of the name they were born with. Take famed film noir actor Peter Lorre: He was born Laszlo Lowenstein. Beloved cowboy actor Roy Rogers was named Leonard Slye; Doris Day was originally Doris Kappelhoff; and Natasha Gurdin changed her name to Natalie Wood. And would Boris Karloff have been so well-known as a villain if he’d used his given name, William Henry Pratt? * Edgar Rice Burroughs, the author of “Tarzan of the Apes” and its 25 sequels, never actually visited Africa. * If you’re of a certain age and facing up to wrinkles, you might be interested to learn that, according to

the American Academy of Dermatology, one of the top causes of skin wrinkles is your habitual sleeping position. Rounding out the top five contributing factors are sun exposure, gravity, smoking and facial expressions. * An anteater can grow to be 6 feet long, yet its mouth is only 1 inch wide. * Reportedly, anyone caught in the jaws of a crocodile can release himor herself instantly by pressing on the animal’s eyeballs (though I cannot personally attest to the veracity of this claim). * In a recent survey of nearly 1,500 American adults, only 36 percent of respondents could correctly name all three branches of the United States government. Even more disturbing, a full 35 percent couldn’t name even one branch. *** Thought for the Day: “It is better to have a permanent income than to be fascinating.” -- Oscar Wilde (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

JGR has hot hand BY BILL DYER Special to the Piedmont Shopper It’s good to be driving a Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing these days. Hendrick Motorsports and Stewart-Haas Racing combined to win 10 of 18 races during the first half of the season, but a change appears to be happening at Joe Gibbs Racing as the Sprint Cup Series begins the second half of the season. JGR has noticeably closed the gap following Kyle Busch’s third win of the season at New Hampshire Motor Speedway Sunday. The speed that the JGR cars showed at the 1.5-mile Kentucky Speedway a week ago carried over this week to the flat 1-mile New Hampshire oval. “Right now everything is clicking and it just feels right,” said Carl Edwards, who captured his first pole position since November 2013. “At the beginning of practice, Matt (Kenseth) was on top of the sheet and then I got up there and then Kyle got up there. I leaned on Denny (Hamlin’s) data sheet a bunch coming here.” The recovery follows a sluggish start of the season. With the organization expanding to four cars with the addition of Edwards, the expectations were much higher than the results from the four cars. Engines were not up to snuff, and it was tough to match the horsepower of the Hendrick and StewartHaas cars. JGR started the season in a hole following the Busch accident at Daytona which sidelined their ace driver until Memorial Day weekend at Charlotte. But the return of Busch ignited the organization; the issues that confronted JGR had been resolved and their presences on the intermediate tracks was obvious after finding the missing element they needed to keep up with Hendrick Motorsports and Stewart-Haas Racing. “It’s tough to keep up in this day and age in the Sprint Cup Series,” Busch explained. “We kind of saw that a little bit last year and somewhat the year before that we were falling behind. “Certainly over the last few weeks we’ve done a decent job of being able to run up front, contend for wins and obviously that momentum is just kind of starting to build.” The Chase for the Sprint Cup championship is just seven races away, and the resurgence at JGR comes at an opportune time. All of the team’s four drivers are of championship caliber, and that number is what David Wilson, president of Toyota Racing Development, was thinking when he hinted over the weekend at New Hampshire that Toyota officials were talking with the No. 78 team of Furniture Row to switch to their brand next year. “We are definitely open to adding that team,” Wilson said. “I’ve said consistently with the new Chase format, we could use a couple more quality cars. We could expand as early as next year if the circumstances present themselves.” That alone excited Edwards, who was pumped over Toyota’s recent success. “It’s feels like we’re in the sweet spot that I’ve only been in a couple times in this sport where all of us are fast and we’re all pushing one another, but we’re sharing information and it’s really neat,” Edwards said. “It’s fun to have teammates like I have to motivate me and push me and challenge me. It’s really cool and I think there will be a lot of good things to come.” Well said, but don’t count your chickens before they hatch. The Chevrolet and Ford teams are not dead, and they are far from being out of competition with the Toyota’s. The competition shows no sign of deterioration, and while the gap has closed, scientifically, it’s like the old saying, “it aint over ‘till the fat lady sings.” And to coin another phrase: “If you want success, then don’t rely on other people to do what YOU CAN DO.” Makes sense to me.

“What If?” The guidance found in the Bible does not work. Not because it is flawed, but because it is no longer even known. Society seems to have latched on to exactly two words from the Bible, “judge not,” and appears fairly oblivious to everything else within its pages. That is a shame, because the counsel of Scripture actually does work when it is known and applied. And that brings my mind to an intriguing question: what if everyone knew about and applied the actual words of Scripture?

verified: Scammers had hit the area. Things to know: If people show up at your door offering to lower your utility rates, ask for a brochure and number you can call. No brochure, no business. If they ask to see your latest utility bill, what you’re giving them is your name and account number. Before you know it, you’ll be signed up under their company, likely at a much higher rate, with a hefty (over $100) cancellation fee. If you made a mistake and have signed up, call your utility immediately so they can lock your account and not let anyone switch you to another provider. If you signed up, your state might have a rescission provision where you can cancel within a few days without penalty. Call your state’s consumer line or attorney general office and ask for advice. Best bet: If you don’t know who’s outside, don’t open the door.

When a pair of young girls came to my door, both wearing plastic badges on chains around their necks, I knew they would try to sell me something. When I opened the door, one of them launched into a prepared speech. She specifically stated that they represented our local electric company and that they were doing energy audits to be sure we’re all getting the lowest rate. She said she’d need to see my latest electric bill. I said “no thanks” and shut the door. I’ve seen this before ... third-party power companies trying to sign people up. Within minutes I’d checked them out online and learned that the company is all over the country, with different (c) 2015 King Features scams for each state. Synd., Inc. To be sure, I called the power company and they

WE FINANACE METAL ROOFS ON YOUR HOME Q: I saw previews for the new “Supergirl” series, and the lead actress looks so familiar to me. Who is she, and what can you tell me about her? — Katie K., Naples, Fla. A: Melissa Benoist is the star of “Supergirl,” and she is best known, so far, for her work on “Glee,” where she played sweet ingénue Marley from 201214. The multitalented 27-year-old was dating her “Glee” co-star, Blake Jenner (who played Ryder), until March of this year — which is when the couple secretly tied the knot and then jetted off to Europe for an even-more-secret honeymoon. The news of the nuptials came to light mid-July, when Melissa was spotted at Comic-Con in San Diego, where she was promoting “Supergirl,” with a wedding band on her finger. “Supergirl,” which premieres Oct. 26 on CBS, centers on Melissa’s character, Kara Zor-El, cousin of Superman, who was taken in by the Danvers family when she was 12 after being sent away from Krypton, and must learn to embrace her powers after previously hiding them. The series also features Calista Flockhart, Dean Cain (of “Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman”), Helen Slater (who played Supergirl in the 1984 film), Peter Facinelli, Mehcad Brooks and David Harewood. Q: Can you tell me when Adam Sandler’s “Ridiculous Six” will be in theaters? — Leonard F., via email A: It won’t be in theaters, Leonard. And that’s not because of recent uproar over some featured politically incorrect humor in the movie. The film is the first of four Netflix-only comedies that the actor is developing exclusively

Melissa Benoist for the online-streaming network. The film, which is a sendup up Westerns, will hit the streaming service on Dec. 11. Some more Netflix-original films include Judd Apatow and Paul Ruebens’ “Pee-wee’s Big Holiday,” which is currently filming and will air on Netflix in March 2016, and “Beasts of No Nation,” which is being released concurrently on Netflix and in theaters on Oct. 16. “Beasts” is based on Uzodinma Iweala’s 2005 novel about a child soldier conscripted by mercenaries in an unnamed West African country, and stars Idris Elba. Q: I heard that Rosie Perez is leaving “The View.” Is that true? — Gigi T., via email A: Rosie will be leaving the daytime talkfest after only one season as co-host, with her last original airdate being Aug. 6, which is also the final original show of the series’ 18th season. According to executive producer Bill Wolff, Rosie wants to return to acting full time. When “The View” returns in September for its 19th season, comedian/comedy journalist Michelle Collins will be filling Rosie’s vacant seat. Returning to dissect and discuss the latest news are Whoopi Goldberg and Raven-Symoné. As of this writing there was no news about whether Nicolle Wallace would be returning. The show is said to be tinkering with the idea of making a rotation of guest co-hosts a more permanent feature of the show. Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Live For The Moments You Can’t Put Into Words

Local Church Raises Money To Send 81 Bibles To Missionary In The Philippines

Bethel Baptist Church on Mt Cross Road held Vacation Bible School during the week of July 13th-17th. When Pastor Joe Kendrick gave the VBS report on the following Sunday, he was able to report that 9 young people were led to Jesus during the week! Lessons, crafts, and recreation filled the week, and the good news doesn’t stop there! All offerings taken up during VBS will be donated to BEAMS (Bibe Education and Missionary Services), which provides Bibles for missionaries to distribute to believers in their native language. It costs $8 to send one Bible; and after the VBS total and a spontaneous offering after the Pastor’s report on Sunday, the funds collected will provide 81 Bibles to Missionary Rick Martin in the Philippines!

Little Americans By Glenn Mollette I just became a grandfather! My new grandson was born early in the morning on July 16. Wow, did you hear me? This is all amazing stuff. This cuddly little seven and a half pound sleeping burrito does amazing stuff like yawning and occasionally even opens his eyes! This little guy fits my arms like a tailor made glove. Surely God blessed his beautiful mom and dad and our entire family. Thank you God.

of the past and will anybody in thirty years be able to afford to go to the doctor? Will he see World War III? Could he even live to see the end of the world as we know it today? Sigh...I know this sounds like such fear and gloom.

I know, I know. People become grandparents every day. I thought I never would and of course that would have been okay. However, it’s really super good that I have. I already have pictures galore just in case you want to see them.

We owe all of our new little Americans a chance to enjoy America. America is no longer Mayberry. With this new generation, we still have a lot of hard work to do in this country. We cannot give up preserving our freedom. We must not surrender our boundaries and let evil flood over the walls of our nation to engulf us. The opportunities for education, good health, to pursue happiness and live in a free society must be preserved and even re-won by each generation. Today all of us adults must do all we can to make America great and number one again. We cannot live at ease and surrender ourselves to becoming a third world country. We owe it to ourselves, our forefathers and to all of our little Americans who are being born every day.

My little grandboy reminds me of my son who, a few years back, I held just like I held my grandson yesterday. My two sons were beautiful and were blessings to me. Grandchildren are one more big blessing and one more opportunity. I am thankful.

We pass on a lot of junk to family and friends as we leave this life. The best we can pass on to our little Americans is a country where they can grow up with love, faith, equality, security, life, liberty and the opportunity to pursue happiness.

Okay, Okay. I know I’m usually writing about current American issues, politics, religion and Mid-East stuff. The last 24 hours my attitude about all that is who cares? However, I do care because we now have a new little American. I have to wonder and worry just a bit about what he will have to face in this world. What kind of school system will he face? Will college even be affordable? Will there be any jobs in America? Is America going to be a safe place for people to live twenty years from now? Social Security will likely be a thing

1. Sad letters, a photograph and a rose are all mentioned in which Connie Francis song? 2. Which song do Bessie Banks and The Moody Blues have in common? 3. Name the Boston song that was used in the “October Road” television pilot. 4. Who wrote and recorded “Sundown” in 1974? (Hint: He’s Canadian.) 5. Name the song that contains this lyric: “The problem is all inside your head, she said to me, The answer is easy if you take it logically, I’d like to help you in your struggle to be free.” Answers 1. “Among My Souvenirs,” 1959. The song originally had been released in 1928 by Paul Whiteman. 2. “Go Now!” in 1965. Banks’ husband had written the song for her to record, but The Moody Blues beat her to the charts. 3. “Don’t Look Back,” 1978. The song was used shortly after the death of band member Brad Delp in 2007. 4. Gordon Lightfoot. 5. “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover,” by Paul Simon, 1975, on his “Still Crazy After All These Years” album. Simon wrote and recorded the song just after his divorce. The song went to No. 1 and stayed at the top for three weeks. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

You’ll soon be able to stop carrying a foldedup, faded copy of your DD-214 in your wallet in order to identify yourself as a veteran. The Veterans Identification Card Act of 2015 (H.R.91) has passed the House and Senate. Soon you’ll be able to get a Veterans ID card, if you don’t already have one from being signed up for health care or for having served for at least 20 years. A card that clearly identifies you as a veteran will be helpful in a number of ways when you need to verify your veterans status: a reduced rate on your property taxes, veteran car tags and discounts in restaurants, travel, hotels and car rental, Amtrak, movie theaters, national parks and lots of retailers and services. (If you didn’t know you can get so many discounts, dig around on the Internet.) It won’t, however, get you any veterans benefits you don’t already have. And

you might have to pay a small fee to cover costs. (That’s because it took years to get the legislation this far as there were a few naysayers who decried the cost of producing something they say you don’t need.) One big benefit of having the new ID card is that if your paper DD-214 is lost, it contains too much personal information — like your date of birth, place of birth, service number – and worse in this day and age, your Social Security number. Wanna-be phonies can make use of a lost DD-214 to create an authenticlooking paper copy, using your info and their name. The new cards will have your photo and name, as well as a number that is not your Social Security number. Now the bill for the ID card goes to the president for his signature. Surely he’ll sign it, right? (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

In the United States, renovation spending has more than doubled since the late 1990s, reaching nearly $65 billion last year alone. Oftentimes the investment a homeowner makes is substantial, both financially and emotionally. The stakes are high. That’s why it’s imperative that the job is done well from start to finish. There are a number of steps a homeowner can take to ensure a positive experience and a successful outcome, including: 1. Know your goal. Ask the question, “What is this renovation designed to accomplish? More functionality? Storage? Living space?” If a homeowner doesn’t know where they’re going with the renovation, chances are they’ll never get there. 2. Do your research. In most things, knowledge is power, and knowing what to expect, in advance, can keep expectations in check. Investigate options, budgets and timelines, and arrange financing in advance. 3. Hire professionals. Be sure that they are happy to work with you to meet your budget and achieve your vision. Communicate clearly and often to ensure understanding on both sides. 4. Opt for a general contractor and trades that are experienced, licensed and insured. Don’t hesitate to check credentials and references. Get recommendations from family, friends and colleagues who have had work done and were satisfied with the results. 5. Start with quality building materials. When it comes to home renovation and construction, the adage, “it’s what’s on the inside that counts” seems apt. While homeowners tend to get caught up in the aesthetics of a project, such as finishings and paint colors, the key to a successful renovation often lies in what you won’t see. Investing in quality behind your walls will ensure durability, comfort and safety for years to come. 6. Focus on the basics. This includes quality electrical, plumbing, HVAC, framing and drywall. Don’t underestimate the importance of insulation — especially in a basement renovation. Not all insulation is created equal. Opt for insulation that is fire-resistant, sound absorbent and resistant to mold, mildew, bacterial growth, and rot. In my renovations, I like to use products like Roxul’s Comfortbatt and Comfortboard IS to help achieve a more energy efficient home, buy you valuable time in the event of a fire and prevent moisture issues that can pose health risks and lead to costly repairs. 7. Develop a good plan. This includes preparing for the unexpected. Setting aside a 20 percent contingency fund will help bring you to the finish line when unanticipated issues creep up. Lastly, the key to a successful renovation includes patience. Living in a construction zone — or alternately moving out while the work is done — can be stressful and trying. Keep your eyes on the prize. There’s nothing more rewarding than the end result, which can bring years of enjoyment and ultimately add to your home’s bottom line.
