Add Health Screenings To Back-To-School Checklist As summer vacation winds down, thoughts turn from jaunts to the beach to readying for a new school year. To-do lists include many of the typical tasks that precede going back to the classroom, including shopping for new clothes, purchasing school supplies and finishing summer reading assignments. Another essential requirement parents must find time for is completing their children’s health screenings and immunizations so youngsters can return to school. Health screenings may include, but may not be limited to, routine physical exams, eye exams and dental cleanings. Each school district may have its own set of health requirements that must be met in order for children to attend school. Many schools require that children are up-to-date with all immunizations before they can begin a new school year. While the issue of vaccinations has inspired debate in recent years, parents should recognize that many schools will only exempt students from receiving certain vaccinations due to religious reasons. For a list of state vaccination requirements and possible exemptions for schools in the United States, visit www2a.cdc.gov/nip/ schoolsurv/schImmRqmt.asp. Students who have specific learning disabilities or medical conditions that require classroom modification should obtain recent documentation from any therapists or specialists prior to beginning a new school year. Doing so facilitates the process of setting up procedures within the school while ensuring children have what they need to excel in the classroom. All parents may want to ask doctors to provide copies of medical and immunization records so that schools will have the most recent copies on file. Parents should schedule eye examinations well in advance of the first day of school so they have ample time to fill new prescriptions for youngsters before school begins. This ensures kids won’t be starting off on the wrong foot because of vision problems that could already have been addressed. Parents of adolescents or students on the verge of adolescence may want to address the subject of bodily changes before the school year begins anew. Address which changes can be expected, including the start of menstruation for girls. This will help children better understand what is happening when they witness changes in themselves and fellow classmates and give them a chance to receive accurate information rather than gossip from their peers. Keep in mind that health screenings conducted in advance of the school year may not preclude students from school-sponsored screenings. Schools may offer their own vision and hearing screenings and may take physical measurements to ensure students are growing on schedules in line with normal development.

EMAIL What’s That Noise?
A guy is walking down the street and passes a hardware store advertising a sale on a chain saw that is capable of cutting seven hundred trees in seven hours. The guy thinks thats a great deal and decides to buy one. The next day, he comes back with the saw and complains to the salesman that the thing didn’t come close to chopping down the seven hundred trees the ad said it would. “Well,” said the salesman, “let’s test it out back.” Finding a log, the salesman pulls the starter cord and the saw makes a great roaring sound. “What’s that noise?” asks the guy.

Could see this coming BY BILL DYER Special to the Piedmont Shopper You could see this one coming. Drivers asked for a lower downforce package and NASCAR responded by giving them the opposite. The high-drag package used in Sunday’s Brickyard 400 proved frustrating for drivers. And as soon as engines had cooled down, drivers were steaming over a package that was intended to create a draft that hopefully would improve passing. Wrong again NASCAR. “When you got back in traffic….you was horrible,” said race-winner Kyle Busch. “It was so hard to handle in traffic. You don’t want to feel like you’re going off into a corner and you’re going to crash every time. You want to have some sort of security. I think there’s something be too learned from Indy. I’m not sure it’s the right combination, but I think there are some benefits.” Teammate Matt Kenseth said the package was the worst thing he had ever driven on a big track. “It’s terrible. I like the low-downforce stuff because we actually have to drive the car.” And yet another disgruntled teammate. “It was really bad,” said Denny Hamlin, who finished fifth. “I think the package was really more intended for a track like Michigan than what it was here at Indy.” The package stunk. Not only did the rear bumper extension seal the bottom of the car that trapped in hot air, a larger spoiler that was designed to create draft made it nearly impossible to pass. Before the Indy race, cars would tighten up when they got behind another car, but the new package created a loose issue when they got behind another car. Yes, a flat track like Indy is noted as one that makes passing quite a task. It’s not designed for heavy stock cars. Long straightaways and relatively flat corners make Indy-style racing a hit at the 2.5mile oval….but that’s not what NASCAR brings to the table. NASCAR was mum following yet another disaster Sunday. Their attention is more about how to remove the Confederate flag from NASCAR events than creating a package that’s more about racing than strategy. From the opening gun until the finish, NBC’s coverage of the race was all about fuel mileage, track position and clean air. We get another look at the Indy package in three weeks at Michigan while the low downforce package used at Kentucky Speedway makes its second appearance in the September Southern 500 at Darlington. The standard rule package used at the beginning of the season will return for Sunday’s race at Pocono. And here’s another killer that was unforeseen in Sunday’s race. The nine-inch spoiler, six inches higher than the Kentucky package and three inches taller than the standard package – heightened the blade to a point that it limited the visibility of the drivers, especially on restarts when drivers struggled to see their marks. Another angle to the ever changing rule package is cost. A lot of wasted money with no proven results, and that doesn’t sit well with the car owners. Kevin Harvick, who led most of the race, said the package at Indy was a “science experiment.” “I think everybody put a lot of effort to really try to make everything a lot better, spent a lot of money but I don’t know that we accomplished everything that we were looking to accomplish. But everybody tried real hard, and in the end our goal is more drafting and more pack racing, so we’ll see if we can do that.” Series officials said following the race Sunday they needed more time to examine the race. It’s a dead horse….NASCAR! What’s there to examine? (All quotes are from reliable NASCAR sources.)

“The Custodian On The Cabinet” Our church is not exactly “normal.” I get that, and I am okay with it. No, actually, I am more than okay with it, I actually like it. How can you not like a church where the custodian hides on top of the supply cabinets in the office wing hallway? Perhaps I should explain... My wife and I came in recently to find the wife and the son of our custodian looking for her husband/his father. They had finished cleaning the church for the day and had enough time for one of their favorite past times: a 10,000 square foot game of hide and seek. Upon inquiry, I found that this is actually a fairly regular thing they do. It seems they have been hide and seek afficionados for years, and salivate at the thought of playing in a building with a foyer, six Sunday school rooms, two nurseries, two offices, a break room, two storage rooms, a music supply room, a sound booth, a broadcast booth, four bathrooms, a janitor’s closet, and three hallways. On the day in question, his hiding place of choice was on top of the supply cabinets. His family passed right by him multiple times and never found him. It seems that looking up is something people do not normally do in a game of hide and seek. Mind you, these folks are not in any way being disrespectful to the House of God. Their games have “off limits” areas. To me, there is nothing “holy of holies” about the top of a supply cabinet or the underside of a nursery sink. Furthermore, as good of a job as they do on all things custodial, I am more than willing to allow fringe benefits that cost the church absolutely nothing. Most people would ask for regular raises, these folks just count to 100 and then shout “Ready or not, here I come!” I wonder, though, how
many church goers there are across the land who play a far more serious game of hide and seek in church? In Revelation chapters two and three, Jesus delivered seven messages to seven churches through the pastors of each. When it came to the Church of Sardis he said “thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.” The church of Sardis was engaging in the worst kind of church hide and seek: they were maintaining a reputation of spirituality that they no longer deserved. Everyone is concerned about reputation. But reality is far more important than reputation. If your reputation for being a voracious reader of Scripture or a real prayer warrior is no longer deserved, do not take care to hide the failure; fix the failure. If your reputation for purity and holiness is still intact but would be in tatters if your sin were exposed, do not think of more elaborate ways to hide what you have become; repent and become what you once were. If you are sitting together looking like the ideal family, carefully masking the fact that you are coming apart at the seams, lay aside your pride and get some help from your pastor or a trusted church counselor. Ben Franklin once said, “What you would seem to be, be really.” Wise words, Ben, and words that mirror the teaching of the Bible. In Matthew twenty-three, Jesus eight times ripped the Pharisees as hypocrites. In verse twenty-seven he said that they were “like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.” You cannot hide what you are forever, not even if you are lying on a supply cabinet in a hallway.

VA Could Suspend Choice Referrals In letters to Congress, the Department of Veterans Affairs has asked that $3 billion be diverted to other areas in the VA’s Care in the Community program. That money (originally $10 billion spread out over three years) was specifically earmarked for Choice, which allows veterans who live more than 40 miles from a VA medical center to seek referrals to civilian care close to home. If the $3 billion isn’t forthcoming, says the VA, it might need start closing VA facilities in August and shut down community-care referrals until October. It blames, in part, the cost of treatment for hepatitis C. Shots for that can run to $1,000 each, and many are needed over the course of treatment. Inquiring minds want to know: Is there suddenly a massive outbreak of hepatitis among veterans? Did this happen overnight? Because if it didn’t, the VA is using the expense of treating it as

an excuse for needing an infusion of cash to keep operating. If hepatitis C is truly a growing problem, someone at the VA should have noticed the pattern before it reached this critical level. At this writing, Congress is hesitant to give permission to use that money in other ways, especially given the VA’s other problems. Meanwhile, a leaked statistical document from a former whistle blower shows that of 847,822 veterans who’ve applied for VA care over the years, as many as 238,657 passed away before getting it. Exactly when they died, however, isn’t known, as the VA says it has no way of deleting names. It accepts only certain forms of proof of death, and the ones you’d expect (Social Security notification, for example) aren’t accepted. Meanwhile, the new VA facility being built in Denver is $1 billion over budget. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Q: I used to love that show “Lie to Me,” and I wonder what happened to the actress who played the lead, opposite Tim Roth. Can you fill me in? -- Daniel D., via email A: Kelli Williams is the talented actress in question, and aside from “Lie to Me,” she’s also known for her work in “The Practice,” “Army Wives,” “Men in Trees” and a whole bunch of other stuff. Beginning Wednesday, Aug. 12, at 9 p.m. ET, you can catch Kelli in “Ties That Bind,” the Up network’s first original series. The 10-episode season centers on Kelli’s character, police detective Allison McLean, who is balancing a demanding and dangerous job, and a family. Kelli assures me that “Ties” isn’t like other police procedurals, explaining: “I was curious about this being a hybrid cop drama/family drama, and how the two would work or not work in everyday terms of managing career and family. I know from experience -- I have three kids and I have a job. We all try to do the best we can with being the best mom we can be, and also doing the best we can do in our work. “I liked the idea of the family story that’s maintained throughout all of the episodes. And I feel like they are doing a really nice job of that, by taking these crazy cases that we have and then my character is home with her family, trying not to bring work home with her, and yet she can’t stop thinking about it. It feels really like a perfect show.” ***
Kelli Williams Q: I was disappointed not to see the character of Bran Stark this past season in “Game of Thrones.” Will he be in season six? -- Holly R., via email A: Bran indeed will be back, with Isaac Hempstead Wright reprising his role of the paralyzed vision-seer. He was benched this past season to give the TV series a chance to catch up with where his character is in the book series, and also to give his character time to develop his warg skills with the Three-Eyed Raven. Isaac revealed to the Irish Examiner: “I can’t say a lot, but I am back this [next] season, and it’s going to get particularly interesting with Bran. He has some interesting visions.” *** Q: I’m going through some serious “Walking Dead” withdrawal! -- Kallie D., via Twitter A: Keep steady, Kallie. The sixth season of the hit zombie series begins Oct. 11 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC, with a 90-minute episode to get the fun started. This season will be 16 episodes, delivered in two batches -- the first eight episodes in October and the second eight picking up in February 2016. Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. DRMS FFA Has Officially Started a Dan River Area FFA Alumni & Friends Group The Dan River FFA Alumni and Friends group will be holding its first meeting of the 2015-2016 school year on Monday, August 17, 2015 at 7:00pm. The meeting will be held in the Dan River Middle School library. At this meeting we will be discussing plans for the upcoming school year and membership recruitment. The purpose of the alumni and friends group is to provide support to our agriculture students and FFA members at the middle and high school level. You do NOT need to have been a member of the FFA to participate. Anyone in any location can be a member they simply have to have the desire to support our youth. A member can be as active as they desire. The FFA is the largest youth organization in the world. “Future Farmers of America” was founded by a group of young farmers back in 1928. Their mission was to prepare future generations for the challenges of feeding a growing population. They taught us that agriculture is more than planting and harvesting-- it’s a science, it’s a business and it’s an art. FFA continues to help the next generation rise up to meet those challenges by helping its members to develop their own unique talents and explore their interests in a broad range of career pathways. If you have questions or concerns or would like to join but can’t attend the meeting please contact Lesley Bassett, DRMS Agriculture teacher and FFA Advisor. She can be reached at Lesley.bassett@pcs.k12.va.us or at 434-822-6027. You can also submit comments on our Dan River FFA Facebook group page.
How Shopping Locally Can Help You And Your Community Today’s consumers have more shopping options at their disposal than they did in years past. Though the Internet may put the world at one’s fingertips, more and more shoppers are discovering that buying locally makes for a superior shopping experience. The benefits associated with shopping locally are many, and the following are just a few reasons why shoppers may want to look no further than their own communities when planning their next shopping excursions. Keeps money in the local economy Locally-owned businesses often put a larger share of their revenue back into their communities. Small business owners may be more inclined to employ local residents, giving more people in the community solid employment. Business owners may reach out and support other neighborhood efforts, such as fundraising initiatives for charities and schools. By shopping at local stores, you have a hand in supporting these efforts as well. Save money When factoring in travel time and the cost of fuel, shopping locally makes more sense than driving to a faraway mall. In addition, repeat customers who establish a rapport with a local business owner may find that such owners are more inclined to price match or work with loyal customers to find lower prices through suppliers. Diversify your home and lifestyle Shoppers who prefer more unique styles may find local businesses cater to their needs better than large chain stores. Larger retailers offer the same products to customers regardless of where those customers live, so a person in California may be decorating his or her home with the same furnishings as a person in North Carolina. But local shops tend to produce more unique items that are not available nationwide. Promote entrepreneurship Small businesses are an essential element to the country’s economic growth. By shopping locally, consumers are showing their support for this important segment of the national economy. Help establish local pride Independent shops contribute to the fabric of a community and what makes it special and unique. Tourists and other visitors will be much more inclined to remember a local shop rather than a big chain in a particular neighborhood. When travelers want to get a feel for a community, they seek out small, local stores that are much more likely to stock a high percentage of locally-sourced goods. Attract other businesses Private and public sector businesses tend to gravitate around anchor stores. Should a local store be successful, banks, restaurants, salons, and other businesses may move in as well. Shopping locally benefits consumers in various ways, many of which contribute to a healthy local economy.

PEEP TALK ! You don’t ever have to worry about anyone ceasing to read the Piedmont Shopper. My uncle, Henry D. Hopkins, is 87 years old & he goes somewhere to get a stack of them each week. He delivers them to the nursing home, and to his friends in his neighborhood. He makes sure everyone gets a copy every week! He and his wife Shirley love to share it and laugh at the jokes and stories. That paper is the heartbeat for a lot of people! My daughter, Ruby, sells Scentsy and she has used your paper for many occasions. She knows that is the one paper that everyone reads! Our church, Central Boulevard Church of God, just used your paper for our Vendor Spring Fling on 4/11/15, and I am sure half or more of the people came because of the Shopper!” -Deborah Severt “I feel our business has grown every year by advertising in the Piedmont Shopper. The Problem With Hard Water Home ownership opens people’s eyes to many new experiences, even requiring homeowners to familiarize themselves with certain things they never encountered as renters. Homeowners become novice plumbers, electricians, horticulturists, and even chemists as they wade through the projects and repairs involved with owning a home. Outside of high school chemistry class, you may never have given thought to water composition and how it changes. However, once you become a homeowner, you may have to pay special attention to the type of water bubbling out of your faucets. Hard water is a common concern, and it can affect appliances and other parts of the home.

What is hard water? Hard water affects about 85 percent of the United States, according to the Water Quality Association. Although not harmful to human health, hard water can impact one’s daily life in other ways. Hard water is formed when water moves through soil and rock. It dissolves very small amounts of minerals and holds them in a solution. Calcium and magnesium are the most common minerals to turn water “hard.” The more magnesium and calcium water dissolves, the harder it becomes. From nuisance to damaging Hard water can not only be a minor headache, but also something more serious. Hard water can interfere with various cleaning tasks and also personal grooming. Clothes washed in hard water may not be fully clean and may appear dingy. Hard water can cause a film on surfaces, such as bath tiles and tubs. Some people find that their hair and skin can appear dull and sticky due to hard water. Hard water can have other effects, too. Over time, the water can deposit minerals on the inside of pipes, reducing water flow. If these deposits grow thick, you may have a plumbing issue on your hands. Furthermore, mineral deposits can harm appliances, such as water heaters, washing machines and dishwashers. Eventually, hard water may render these appliances ineffective, and they will need to be replaced. Treatment options Considering hard water is such a common concern, a number of treatment options exist. The main types of water-softening systems use either a packaged water softener or a mechanical water-softening unit. Packaged water softeners are chemicals that bond with the calcium and magnesium ions in the water so that they cannot interfere with cleaning efficiency. These chemicals fall into two categories: precipitating and nonprecipitating. Precipitating softeners are borax and washing soda and can affect pH levels of water and make water cloudy. Nonprecipitating softeners use phosphates. Alkalinity won’t be increased, and usually there is no cloudiness or buildup. These products are typically added to laundry loads and the like and are not recommended for drinking water. Mechanical water-softening systems are hooked up directly to the plumbing of the house. They are ion-exchange systems that will add salt to the water. Although it can be safe to drink, softened water may not be recommended for those who are on low-sodium diets. Hard water is a problem many homeowners have to face. It can affect a home’s appliances’ performance and cleaning abilities. Water hardness can be managed, and it is best to consult with an expert water-softening system manufacturer about your options.

* I have a pair of pants I wear while gardening. The knees wore out, naturally, and I went to sew patches on the knees. I left the top of the patch open, and when needed, I slip in a piece of foam rubber. Magical knee pads! -- R.E. in Oregon * Are you great behind the lens of your camera and love animals? Consider donating your time to your local animal shelter as a pet photographer. Showing Mittens and Fido off to their best advantage can mean the difference in their finding a forever home. Check with your local rescue organizations, too! * To clean your tarnished silver jewelry, simply line a tray or shallow bowl with aluminum foil, lay the pieces on the foil and fill with a hot water and detergent solution (NOT bleach-containing). You also can use baking soda and hot water. Swish and allow the tarnish to transfer to the foil. Use a soft cloth to dry.

JERK PORK Jerk marinades typically use Scotch bonnet peppers, one of the hottest peppers in the world. Remember to always wear gloves when preparing fresh peppers. It’s best to remove the stems and seeds with your gloved fingers or paring knife. Removing the seeds doesn’t affect the flavor, but greatly decreases the heat. Afterward, always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and cold water and clean any utensils or surfaces you have used. 1/3 cup vegetable oil 1/3 cup distilled white vinegar 4 green onions, chopped 2 cloves garlic, chopped 2 to 5 Scotch Bonnet peppers, seeded and minced, to taste 3 bay leaves 3 peppercorns 1 tablespoon dried ground cinnamon 3 to 4 whole allspice berries, lightly crushed 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 3 pounds pork chops, about 1 inch thick 1. Combine oil and vinegar in a small bowl. Stir in green onions, garlic, peppers, bay leaves, peppercorns, cinnamon, allspice, pepper and nutmeg. 2. Trim any excess fat from pork chops. Place pork chops in a re-sealable plastic bag. Pour spice mixture over them, coating each chop well. Place bag of pork chops in a baking pan and refrigerate to marinate up to 24 hours, turning once or twice every four hours. 3. Allow chops to come to room temperature before grilling. Heat grill until coals are somewhat white with ash; the flame should be low. Place chops on grill and cover with lid. Grill 5 to 10 minutes per side, until the chops are no longer pink in center. Serves 4 to 6. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children’s author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks.
