A friend of mine was a philosophy major during his first semester in college. One day in a seminar class, they spent a great deal of time debating whether the glass was half full or half empty. After the class, my friend was feeling pretty good about himself and what he was learning at university, so when he went home, he tried to continue the discussion with his family. With maximum drama, he took a 12 ounce glass from the cupboard and poured in 6 ounces of water. Then took it into the dining room and placed it in the middle of the table. Emma Hughes White

Emma Hughes White, 88, of 16693 Old Richm o n d Road, Keeling, VA died on Monday, June 27, 2016 at her residence after a decline in health for the past year. Mrs. White was born in Pittsylvania County, VA on April 26, 1928, daughter of the late Robert Cuble Hughes and the late Mary Emma Chandler Hughes. She spent all of her life in the Pittsylvania County area where she was a farmer’s wife. She also worked at Dan River Mills and was a nurse’s aide until her retirement. She was a member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church for over 73 years. She enjoyed cooking and loved spending time with her family and friends. On June 21, 1947 she married the late Garland L. White who died on February 6, 1972. Survivors include, children, Garland L. White, Jr. of Keeling, VA, Don White and wife Terry of Zebulon, NC, Cynthia Bohannon and husband George of Mebane, NC, David White and wife Amy of Clayton, NC and Joey White and wife Pam of Java, VA; sisters, Annie Mae Hodnett of Danville, VA and Thelma Bane of Vernon Hill, VA; eleven grandchildren; five great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents she was predeceased by four brother and three sisters. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, June 30, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Reverend Carl Burger officiating. Interment will follow the service in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests that memorial donations be made to Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, PO Box 103 Keeling, VA 24566. The family would like to express a sincere thank you to Liberty Home Healthcare and Hospice for the love and care given to Mrs. White. Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is respectfully serving the White family.

Joe H. Asbury, 69, of 610 M o u n t C r o s s Road, Apt. B-1, Danville, VA died Sunday, July 3, 2016 at his residence after a decline in his health since January of 2016. Joe was born in Richlands, VA, on May 17, 1947, a son of the late Juanita Puckett Asbury and Sherman Ellis Asbury. He lived in Thompson Valley, VA and Tazewell, VA, and had been a resident of Danville since 1999. He retired from Walmart, after sixteen years, as manager of the Lawn and Garden Department. He was of the Methodist faith. On November 23, 1964 he married Barbara Yost Asbury, who survives.

In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by a son, Mark W. Asbury, and wife Cindy, of Charlotte, NC; a daughter, Jessica M. Asbury Bargoil, and husband Ryan, of Clemmons, NC; six grandchildren, Stella Bargoil, Hope Asbury, Charity Taylor and husband Jordan, Amber Asbury, Tyler Harris, and Joshua Asbury; two brothers, Sherman L. Asbury, of Louisville, KY; Herschel Asbury, and wife Bertha, of Check, VA; a sister, Eula A. Locker, of Locust Grove, GA; a sister-inlaw, Betty Asbury, of Jefferson, MD; a niece, Terry Asbury Ballard, and nine nephews, Keith, Joe, Benny, Clyde Jr., Tommy, Sherman L. Jr., Barry Gene, Kenneth, and Jeffery Asbury. He was predeceased by a son, Anthony Joseph Asbury, a brother, Clyde Asbury, a nephew, James C. Locker, Jr., and a brotherin-law, James C. Locker, Sr. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Reverend Farley Beavers and the Reverend J.C. Steele officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at the funeral home from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m. and at other times at the residence. Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is serving the Asbury family.

Gordon Ingram, 79, of 789 Oak Grove Road, Keeling, VA, went home to be with his Lord on July 3, 2016 at his residence after being in declining health for the past six years. He is currently on the chase with his hounds in Heaven. Mr. Ingram was born in Keeling, VA on November 8, 1936, son of the late Robert Wade Ingram and the late Doris Hardy Ingram. He spent all of his life in the Keeling community where he worked for Dan River Mills. He was a fox hunter and served as judge of numerous hunts. He also enjoyed coaching Little League Baseball. On December 10, 1959 he married Nancy Jean Ingram who passed away on September 3, 2015. Mr. Ingram is survived by daughter, Bonnie I. Mr. Landon Reynolds, age 79, of 340 Hickory Forest R o a d , Danville, VA, died on June 29, 2016 at his home. Robert Dean Reynolds, age 75, of 908 Daisy Payne Lane, Dry Fork, VA, passed away on Thursday, June 30, 2016 at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro, NC. Born in Dry Fork on May 11, 1941, he was the son of the late Olidean Reynolds and Doris Herndon Reynolds. He was married to Louise Doss Reynolds, who predeceased him on April 19, 2015. He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church. He served his country in the US Army during the Viet Nam War. In addition, he worked as a laborer in the furniture industry and was a farmer. After retiring, he was an avid gardener, hunter, and fisherman. Mr. Reynolds is survived by two sons, Ronald Dean Reynolds (Cheryl) of Dry Fork and Kenneth Wayne Reynolds (Jane) of Cascade, VA; three daughters, Patricia Bolling (Jeff) of Climax, VA, Sandra Bolling (Johnny) of Gretna, VA, and Angela Marie Reynolds of Danville. “A Column Full Of (Helpful) Microaggressions” I am, quite bluntly, worried that America is losing her collective mind.

The latest news story to confirm my suspicion is one in which groups at major universities apparently have issued guidelines on “microaggressions.” Among the verbiage now considered offensive are things such as Christmas vacation, golf outing, husband, boyfriend, American, melting pot, and land of opportunity. Vision Loss May Cause Hallucinations ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: When I lost the vision in my eye in an accident, I had Charles Bonnet syndrome hallucinations. I am 80 years old, and I went completely blind in one eye. There were patterns that I saw whenever my eye was unfocused, which pretty much obscured everything. I saw complicated figures like very bright TV. I have read Oliver Sacks’ explanation in his latest book, called “Hallucinations.” What I viewed is exactly how he described CBS. Seven months later, I am still having hallucinations, but they are much subdued and not very interesting. I think it is gradually disappearing. What concerns me is that none of the hospital personnel knew of the syndrome. The best that was offered was that it was from a bladder infection, which I did not think I had. I imagine that there are a lot of old blind folks who think they are crazy, and there is no one to tell them otherwise. I am hoping you might write an explanation for all of us who have failing eyesight and no explanation for what ails us. I had so many interesting visions, and since I knew it was not real, I rather enjoyed it. -- L.R. ANSWER: I can’t criticize the doctors at your hospital too much, since I had never heard about this type of hallucination before your letter. In fact, a brief survey of some colleagues, with hundreds of years’ worth of clinical experience, showed me that many of us, unlike Dr. Sacks, had never heard of this syndrome, so I am glad to be able to bring it up. Charles Bonnet syndrome, also called visual release

hallucinations, occur in people who are losing or have lost vision. It does seem to be more common in the elderly, but it has been reported in children. Most people who have had these hallucinations do not bring it up to their doctor, probably because they fear being labeled as having a psychiatric disease. It is thought to happen due to the firing of nerve cells in areas of the brain that process vision when they are deprived of visual input from the optic nerve. There are treatments available, including moving the eyes rapidly back and forth, which often can stop the hallucinations if they are bothersome. There are also medications to stop them in people who don’t enjoy them the way you have. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: A dear friend of mine has been diagnosed with polymyalgia rheumatica and is being treated with prednisone. Can you give me any information about this illness? -- G.O. ANSWER: Polymyalgia rheumatica is a common illness, almost always found in people over 50. It causes pain and stiffness, especially in the arms and shoulders, and especially in the morning. It responds very well to low to moderate doses (10-20 mg) of prednisone. The prednisone is continued usually for one to two years. PMR often is associated with a more serious condition, temporal (or giant cell) arteritis. Catching The Crooks Thanks to the Office of the Inspector General, the U.S. Attorney General, the Department of Justice and others, those who try to steal from veterans or hurt them are eventually caught and sent to prison. A fiduciary in Oregon was convicted of multiple counts of criminal mistreatment, aggravated theft, money laundering and tax evasion after she stole money from 26 disabled veterans. As a fiduciary, she was responsible for the management of the veterans’ money. Instead she snagged checks meant for others and deposited them, and when a client died, she took all the remaining money. She even used $30,000 belonging to one veteran to pay off court-ordered restitution after she defrauded two other clients. For this she was sentenced to only 48 months in prison. In Maine, a UPS customer-service rep grabbed packages containing narcotic prescriptions that had been sent from the VA medical center in Togus, Maine. For this she could

get up to three years in prison. In Boston, a crook tried to cash in on the special benefits of the Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business Program by recruiting a disabled veteran to act as straw man on all the paperwork and pose as the owner. He managed to get over $110 million in federal contracts. But the worst by far was the male nurse in the VA medical center in Albany, N.Y. He was accused and found guilty of stealing painkillers from veterans on the hospice ward. Instead of administering the prescribed oxycodone hydrochloride (a serious painkiller), he gave them Haloperidol (aka Haldol), which is an anti-psychotic drug for mood disorders. To feed his own addiction, he replaced the painkillers in the syringes with the other medication, which gave the patients no relief from pain whatsoever. For his horrible crime, he was only given a prison sentence of 82 months. Not nearly enough, in my opinion. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Renovating An Historic Home Living in an historic home can be a labor of love. The history and the distinct architecture of historic homes draw buyers to such properties, but what historic homes have in regard to history they often lack in the conveniences of modern life, forcing many historic-home owners to make renovations to bring their homes into the 21st century. Historic-home renovations differ from other types of modifications. According to the Victorian Preservation Association, renovation is getting a home back to where it may have been when originally built, but making concessions for today’s lifestyle. Preservation is the act of maintaining a structure in its current historic state, and restoration is returning a home to its original state. Unless a homeowner plans to use an outhouse or live without electricity, the majority of work done on historic properties is likely to fall into the category of a renovation. Renovating an aging structure can be fulfilling and help to make a home more functional. But make no mistake, such a renovation is a major undertaking. Before beginning, it pays to hire a professional consultant with expertise in renovating historic properties. He or she can inspect the property to determine which areas of the home are safe and which will need to be upgraded. A professional inspection also can determine if any deficiencies lie hidden in the structure. Potential concerns can be toxic paints and other substances, building code issues, rotting, and structural settling. Professionals will know what to

look for and guide homeowners accordingly. Homeowners also may want to consult with a preservation association, community restoration group or general owner-builder group. These people can refer homeowners to the craftspeople and materials that will be needed for a job. Homeowners can request to see other historic properties in the area and learn what those owners did to maintain the integrity of a home when using newer materials. Before any work is started, homeowners should find out if their home is listed with the National Register of Historic Places. According to the United States National Parks Service, property owners can do whatever they want with their property so long as there are no federal monies attached to the property. However, the property owner should also contact his or her state’s historic preservation office, or SHPO. The SHPO is the state agency that oversees historic preservation efforts in each state, and there may be state or local preservation laws that the owner should be aware of before renovating a historic property. Craftspeople should have experience with historic homes and a sensitivity and appreciation of renovating older properties. Homeowners always should see examples of a craftsperson’s work and verify references from each contractor before hiring anyone to work on the property. Homeowners who want to include traditional hardware and other period details in their homes may be able to find quality replicas of historic milling materials, while others may want to scour antique shops or salvage yards for era-appropriate materials. Historic renovations can be costly and have a tendency to go over budget because of unforseen damage and hazards that have to be repaired so the building is up to code. Going into the project with this in mind can help soften the blow of extra costs down the road. Historic homes can be beautiful and appeal to buyers who appreciate the one-of-a-kind nature of older properties. Renovating historic homes may take time and money, but the results may be well worth the effort.

Instructions Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Season pork chops with salt and pepper, to taste. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium high heat. Add pork chops and sear both sides until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes. Place into oven and roast until completely cooked through, reaching an internal temperature of 140 degrees F, about 8-10 minutes.* To make the sweet and sour glaze, combine balsamic vinegar, honey, garlic, oregano, basil, thyme and red pepper flakes in a small saucepan over medium heat; season with salt and pepper, to taste.
