Nursing Trends Show A Profession In Transition The healthcare industry is changing rapidly, and nurses, the largest group of healthcare professionals in the nation, are at the forefront of these changes. Despite the difficult economic conditions of recent years, nursing as a profession has thrived -particularly when compared to other professions. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that job growth for nurses will continue to be more rapid than the national average, making the profession among the best career choices available today. So what can nurses and those considering entering the field expect over the next decade? The demand for nurses will continue. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there will be nearly 712,000 new nursing positions by 2020, making this profession the fastest growing occupation. One of the factors fueling the growth is the aging population, and there will be great demand for nurses who are trained in geriatrics and who are able to work in ambulatory (i.e., outpatient) settings. More nurses will work in outpatient settings, home healthcare, and nursing homes. The Bureau of Labor Statistics also projects that hospital nursing jobs will grow much more slowly than jobs in outpatient facilities and home health care. This is due both to the growth of the aging population and the increase in the number of medical procedures done on an outpatient basis or in homes. Hospitals will increasingly require RNs to have four-year degrees. Many hospitals have begun hiring only those nurses with BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) degrees or providing incentives for their employees with two-year associate degrees to return to school to earn their BSNs. Similarly, many nurses with BSNs are heading back to the classroom to become master’s degree-level nurse practitioners. Nurses are getting younger and older. During the last decade, a variety of efforts were made to make nursing more attractive to younger people. As a result, the number of younger nurses (ages 23 to 26) has grown significantly. This is expected to help offset the mass retirement of nurses that is expected to occur between now and 2020. At the same time, more people are entering the profession later in their careers as a result of the proliferation of two-year and accelerated nursing programs that were developed largely to attract people from other fields. Nursing educators will be in demand as well. Nursing program faculty will be among the retirees who will leave the profession over the next decade and there is expected to be a shortage of nurse educators to take their places. Technology will continue to alter how nurses operate and learn. Come 2014, all medical records will be electronic, so nurses will be saying a final good-bye to their black pens and a big hello to keyboards and tablets. In hospitals, nurses will continue to rely on texting to relay messages or provide information to doctors. Technology, in the form of digital textbooks, mobile phone applications that access drug information and simulated online clinics, will continue to alter how nursing students learn.

EMAIL Everyone Loves A Johnny Joke

Little Johnny is always being teased by the other neighborhood boys who say he’s not smart. Their favorite joke is to offer Johnny his choice between a nickel and a dime -- Little Johnny always takes the nickel. One day, after Johnny takes the nickel, a neighbor takes him aside and says, “Johnny, those boys are making fun of you. Don’t you know that a dime is worth more than a nickel, even though the nickel’s bigger?” Johnny grins and says, “Well, if I took the dime, they’d stop doing it, and so far I’ve made $20!”

Veterans Day Vacations Fighting in World War I ceased between the Allies and Germany at 11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month: Nov. 11, 1918. Congress eventually passed an act to commemorate the occasion, calling it Armistice Day, a legal holiday. Eventually it got around to doing it right and renamed it Veterans Day. Unlike Memorial Day, which floats around the calendar as a three-day holiday at the end of May, Veterans Day is always on Nov. 11. Here’s an idea to celebrate our day this year: Take a vacation. It’s after the summer (higher) pricing and crowds, and it’s before the holiday (higher) pricing and crowds. Consider one of the resorts in the Sunday River area in Maine. If Mother Nature has provided snow, go skiing. If not, enjoy the pool, restaurants, hiking, fishing, golf and tennis ... and peace and quiet.

We personally cannot thank Beth Collins enough for all of the time and hard work she has contributed to Danville Toyota. She is one of a kind, and we feel so blessed to have been able to share these moments with her for 9 ½ years. She will be sorely missed and impossible to replace. One class act BY BILL DYER Special to the Piedmont Shopper Jeff Gordon is one class act. The four-time NASCAR Cup Series champion announced earlier this year the 2015 season would be his last as a full-time NASCAR driver. And that’s rather sad. “Jeff Gordon transcends NASCAR and will be celebrated as one of the greatest drivers to ever race,” NASCAR CEO Brian France said in a news release. “We have all enjoyed watching his legend grow for more than two decades, and will continue to do so during his final full-time season. His prolonged excellence and unmatched class continue to earn him the admiration of fans across the globe.” Gordon’s 92 career Cup wins puts him in the Top 5 most-decorated NASCAR drivers of all-time. He’s fourth behind Dale Earnhardt, Jimmie Johnson and Richard Petty, and third in all-time wins behind Petty and David Pearson. Since entering the sport full-time in 1993, Gordon has a near-record setting consecutive starts (784) to his credit, and it’s a sure bet he’ll break the record held by Ricky Rudd (788) if he continues on pace. Gordon has often said when he was younger that he wouldn’t race past age 40, but now at age 43 his final laps as a full-time NASCAR driver are here. Although he didn’t single out family as his primary reason for retiring as a full-time driver, his wife, Ingrid, and daughter Ella, and son Leo, are his life. “When I get home from racing the kids are excited to see me for about five minutes,” Gordon said. “But then it’s, ‘Okay, time to play,’ or ‘let’s go hit the ball.’ With my daughter, its play dolls play make-believe. That the tough part of a full schedule. It breaks my heart when I have to leave them. “But as a race car driver, much of what I’ve done all my life has been based on trying to make good decisions,” he added. “I thought long and hard about my future this past year and during the off season, and I decided 2015 will be the last time I compete for a championship.” However, he didn’t close the door on never driving in the Series again. “I don’t see a day when I’ll ever step away from racing. I’m a fan of all forms of motorsports, but particularly NASCAR. We have a tremendous product, and I’m passionate about the business and its future success. “As an equity owner in Hendrick Motorsports, I’m a partner with Rick (Hendrick) and will remain heavily involved with the company for many years to come. It means so much to have a chance to continue working with the owner who took a chance on me and the incredible team that’s stood behind me every step of the way.” Gordon’s talent as a race car driver has been well documented. However, there’s another side of Gordon, too. His charitable work in supporting pediatric cancer research, treatment and patient support through the Jeff Gordon Children’s Foundation is noteworthy. The vision of the Foundation is that there will be a day when no child will face the uncertainty of cancer. The Jeff Gordon Children’s Hospital in Concord, N.C., is another Gordon passion. The hospital serves children in the community by providing a high level of primary specialty pediatric care to all children, regardless of their ability to pay. Over the past 15 years, the organization has raised more than $14 million for children’s health. I find it rather tough to see Gordon go. Love him or hate him he’s the main guy that brought NASCAR to the forefront, and most certain one of the most respected and greatest drivers of my time. This one’s for you….Faye.

Q: I was so shocked to read that Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton are divorcing. Please say it ain’t so! -- Mara W., West Palm Beach, Fla. A: I am sorry to report that the couple has indeed called it quits. Apparently it had been coming for a while, because just hours after announcing their split, their divorce was finalized. Rumors will always abound as to why celebrity couples part ways, and I won’t get into the innuendo and tabloid fodder. All I have to say is that I wish the country couple the best. It seems to be the summer of supercouple splits. Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck announced their intent to divorce after 10 years of marriage; Gwen Stefani filed for divorce from husband Gavin Rossdale after 13 years; and Reba McEntire and Narvel Blackstock are divorcing after 26 years. Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez apparently are set to divorce after two years of marriage; however, as of this writing, the couple hadn’t made an official announcement. Meanwhile, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith are facing yet another round of divorce rumors -- this seems to happen once a year -- however, Jada denies their validity, telling “American Way” magazine: “Every year there’s a new [rumor], and I’m like, ‘Here we go. Get ready. Are ya holdin’ on tight?’ “Marriages go through shifts. And relationships go through shifts because in life, things shift. So people are automatically like, ‘What’s going on? They must be getting a divorce.’ Well, no. But when people feel those shifts and there’s a mystery, they have to fill it with something.” *** Q: I noticed during some of last season’s “New Girl” that Zooey Deschanel wore baggier clothes than

Is she pregnant? -- Julie T., via email A: Zooey was indeed pregnant while shooting quite a bit of season four of her Fox sitcom, however the writers decided not to write her pregnancy into the storyline. The actress gave birth to a girl Aug. 3. When the birth was announced, it was also revealed that she and fiance Jacob Pechenik had secretly wed June 21 in Texas. *** Q: Can you give me any “Game of Thrones” news? I’m going through some serious withdrawals. -Donnie W., via email A: Legendary actor Max von Sydow, who can be seen in December in “Star Wars: Episode VII -- The Force Awakens,” is slated to take over the role of the Three-Eyed Raven (played in season four by Struan Rodger) for season six. His character will teach Bran Stark how to use his supernatural gifts. In more “GoT” casting news, “Deadwood” alumnus Ian McShane will play an undisclosed role in the new season, and it’s been reported that it will be a key role, although, like Max, he won’t get a lot of screen time. Fight Like A Girl!

Sheriff Mike Mondul Named BIG of the Year!

Congratulations to our Big of the Year, Sheriff Mike Mondul! He was recently awarded Big Brother of the Year at the Annual Back To School Picnic. He has been an outstanding Big Brother to his little, ZyQuan McCollum for four years. Mike Mondul says, “We have grown up together.” Way to go Mike!

"It just washed over me. This is coming. This is cancer, and it is coming," said Cortney Herndon, local 35 year old wife and mother of three, of the day she became convinced that the tiny knot she had been watching for about 6 months was breast cancer. Cortney has been doing self breast exams since she was about 23, because she has vivid memories of seeing her grandmother suffer through breast cancer that was caught too late. So when she first discovered the knot that she compares to have been about the size of a bb pellet in October 2014, she immediately made an appointment to have it checked out. At the time, all signs pointed to the spot being a cyst. She'd had them before, so her doctor told her to keep an eye on it, and watch for changes that might indicate a malignant tumor- including growth in size, becoming "fixed" in its' location, feeling "rough" (cysts generally have a smooth texture) or dimpling of the skin on that area (to look like the skin of an orange). So Cortney continued to watch for changes that she seemed to know were coming. In March of 2015, she noticed that it had grown, then in April she was able to see it while doing her self examination with her arm raised in front of the mirror. Even without a diagnosis, she felt confirmation that she had cancer; "I really feel like that was prompting from the Lord to take action." So she called and made an appointment with her primary care physician. By mid May, the skin was starting to dimple, and the lump was in a fixed position, and Cortney's doctor agreed it needed to be checked. The mammogram, at first glance, didn't raise any red flags and still pointed towards a cyst, but Cortney's instincts told her otherwise. An ultrasound was ordered, and the mass still didn't have the appearance of a tumor, so the decision was made to take a biopsy. To the doctor's surprise (because of the cyst-like characteristics of the mass) the mass was cancerous. Cortney's cancer would not have been caught with a mammogram alone, and she urges every woman with concerns to not push them aside. "My advice would be to be persistent and listen to your instincts. If you feel something is wrong, it could be. The first thing everyone wanted to tell me was that 80% of these things are nothing, but in my mind I'm thinking that 20% ARE something, and you can't say for sure that I'm not in that 20%. Women in their 20's can get breast cancer. Men can get breast cancer. It wasn't that I was desiring to have it, but I felt such a confirmation that I had it, that I knew I had to be persistent." Cortney's specific type of cancer is Her2 positive, which basically means that hormones that are naturally produced in her body feed the growth of the cancer. It's a more aggressive form of cancer, in that it recurs more frequently and metastasizes. She has had a double mastectomy, which thankfully removed the cancer. The fight now is to keep it from recurring, so she will begin chemotherapy around the end of August for a three month treatment, followed by the drug Herceptin for a full year. "It's just going to be a fighting year." she says. To look at Cortney, you wouldn't know she's fighting. She carries herself calmly, home schools her three children, (whom she and her husband Neal are very careful to protect from the stresses that come from fighting a battle like this) and is just a picture of strength after receiving such a shocking diagnosis for a young mother to receive. She accredits it all to her faith in the Lord, saying this journey so far has been very "spiritually liberating" and has really taught her to trust God with this battle. "It was no surprise to me when I found out. It was almost like this divine appointment. This moment in time has just been waiting on me to get here for whatever reason. I have no doubt this is where I am supposed to be. It's not what I would have chosen for myself, but God's plans are always perfect, and I've just got to trust in Him to provide for me." And He has been, through her family, her church family, and even people she's never met. "I'm just so in awe of people and their generosity, and them being willing to pray for me." To attest to the support rallied by the community, a fundraiser created for Cortney and her family to be held on August 22 at Swansonville Pentecostal Holiness Church from 4-7pm has already completely sold out of meal tickets-but the Facebook page urges people to still come, there will still be an auction and bake sale! Should you want to donate to Cortney Herndon's Fundraiser, you may do so by sending donations to the church at 16300 Mount Cross Road, Dry Fork VA 24549.

HOW CAN YOU GIVE BACK?

PEEP TALK ! You don’t ever have to worry about anyone ceasing to read the Piedmont Shopper. My uncle, Henry D. Hopkins, is 87 years old & he goes somewhere to get a stack of them each week. He delivers them to the nursing home, and to his friends in his neighborhood. He makes sure everyone gets a copy every week! He and his wife Shirley love to share it and laugh at the jokes and stories. That paper is the heartbeat for a lot of people! My daughter, Ruby, sells Scentsy and she has used your paper for many occasions. She knows that is the one paper that everyone reads! Our church, Central Boulevard Church of God, just used your paper for our Vendor Spring Fling on 4/11/15, and I am sure half or more of the people came because of the Shopper!” -Deborah Severt “I feel our business has grown every year by advertising in the Piedmont Shopper. Judy Bryant is my advertising consultant.”- Bert Sellers Owner • Seller Brothers, Inc. “We moved here over 5 years ago and LOVE your paper. It was our first time selling items through your ads. Thank you so very much for all you do in giving of yourselves to help others. God bless!” Howard and Lynda Richardson

5 Tips For Relocating The Family Did you know the average person moves 11.4 times in his or her lifetime? So says the most recent information from the U.S. Census Bureau. Various factors prompt people to move, from job opportunities to the desire to be closer to family members to wanting to live in a nicer climate. Moving is seldom an easy task, and is often ranked among the most stressful events in a person’s life. The Employee Relocation Council cites it as the third most stressful event in life, following only death and divorce. That stress is only heightened when an entire family is making the move and an adult is starting a new job simultaneously. Despite the potential headaches involved with moving, an estimated 43 million Americans move each year. Those moving are often married couples between the ages of 25 and 44 with one or two children between the ages of 2 and 11. To make the process go more smoothly, consider the following tips. 1. Gradually introduce the concept of moving. Moving is a decision to be discussed with the whole family, even with young children who may not fully understand the process. Kids who are involved in looking at new homes or voicing opinions about which amenities they desire in a new neighborhood will feel empowered and in control. 2. Research potential new neighborhoods carefully. Finding a new residence is not entirely about buying a home that fits the family and its needs. It also is about finding a desirable neighborhood and community. A good school district is an important factor, as is proximity to recreation, local culture and transportation. Drive around a neighborhood during different times of the day to gauge how active it is. Investigating businesses in the area can also help gauge the personality of a given neighborhood. 3. Work with an experienced agent. A real estate agent who is familiar with a variety of communities is a great asset. A buyer’s agent will find homes and negotiate on the part of the buyer, having your best interests in mind. Because the agent will be paid a commission on a portion of the sale price, which doesn’t come out of your pocket, it is in the real estate agent’s best interest to help you find a home you can call your own. In addition, the agent will handle many of the tasks that may be overwhelming if you were doing them on your own, such as scouring available listings, waiting for inspections or filling out pertinent paperwork. With a real estate agent handling these tasks, families can remove some of the stress from the moving process. 4. Pack children’s rooms last. Young children who see favorite items disappearing into bubble wrapping and boxes may start to feel anxious. It’s not uncommon for preschoolers to act out or experience nightmares during the moving process. Maintain a sense of normalcy in the home as long as possible. Begin by packing nonessential items, only packing kids’ items when your moving date is right around the corner. Let children say good-bye to familiar haunts and even to their old home. 5. Plan a school orientation. Take advantage of any programs schools offer to acclimate kids to their new environment. Kids often leave friends behind when moving to a new home. The faster they get back to a normal routine, the better it will be for them. Schools are where children will make new friends and participate in social occasions, so tour their new schools before the school year begins, and meet with a few residents and current students to learn about special programs that may make a move less stressful for youngsters. Relocating a family can be stressful. But involving kids in the process and anticipating an adjustment period can help families adjust more easily.

See ya Later!!! 1100 Piney Forest Road Danville, VA The Danville United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Youth Bowling Committee would like to congreatutale two of our Youth Bowlers that participated in the 2015 State Games of America in Lincoln, Nebraska. These bowlers medaled in the Commonwealth Games of Virginia, allowing them to then compete in the national tournament representing the state of Virginia. Those bowlers were Emma and Hannah Hale of Axton, VA. Besides competing in the games, the girls were selected as the flag bearers for the state of Virginia. This honor allowed them to lead the contingent of athletes from the state of Virginia into Memorial stadium for the opening ceremonies of the 2015 State Games of America on Friday July 31, 2015. On August 1, 2015, the twins competed in youth doubles, youth U15 girls division and in female singles 150 and over average. Emma had success in the U15 division by defeating both the third seed, Hannah Hale and the first seed, Kathryn Stuckenschmidt of Omaha, NE leaving Emma to bring home the Gold medal and Hannah the Bronze medal. The playoff match between the girls was intense and both brought their “A” game. Both girls bowled well during the event, and were proud to represent the Virginia USBC. The Hale sisters will be at Riverside Lanes at 3215 Riverside Drive in Danville, VA. on August 6, 2015 from 7:00pm until 8:30pm if you would like to conduct a personal interview. Pictured above, Emma Hale (center), Hannah Hale (right) and Kathryn Stuckenschmidt (left). For more information please contact: Gary W. * Soaking window decals with baby wipes will soften the adhesive, allowing you to remove a decal from glass more easily. * “Potty training can be stressful for both child and parent. We tried many things, but in the end, you have to wait for the child to want to train. One thing that helped keep our daughter motivated was a sticker chart. Be bought all kinds of stickers, and whenever she used the potty, she would get to choose a sticker to put on the chart. We would remark on how many stickers she had and the variety, which made her feel successful!” -- D.R. in Iowa * “Last week, we found my son’s favorite sippy cup half-filled with sour milk under the couch. I washed it very well with hot, soapy water, but it still smelled bad. I stuffed the cup with newspaper pieces and screwed the top back on. The newspaper absorbed the smell. It took about a week, but it’s back in use.” -- T.L. in Texas

Seems like it’s impossible to get the hair out! A vacuum didn’t work, so my neighbor suggested I use dish gloves. Just put a latex rubber glove on your hand and wipe over seats. A very lightly damped sponge can work as well.” -- P.I. in Washington * Lotion scent too strong? Purchase a pump bottle of unscented lotion, and remove about a third to a small bottle or even a plastic zipper-top bag. Add your scented lotion, and mix well by shaking the bottle or stirring with a long stick. The scent will be diluted, and you can always add more scented lotion or top off with the excess unscented lotion.
