How Bulk Cooking Can Make Meals Easier Healthy family meals can get lost in the shuffle of busy schedules. Convenience may win out when parents are short on time, and it’s hard not to be enticed by the ease of fast food or the lure of frozen foods. While these options are certainly fine on occasion, there is a more nutritious solution for time-crunched families. Planning is a big part of enjoying a homecooked meal, and cooking in bulk can help families enjoy more homecooked meals. By thinking ahead about meals, you can more easily enjoy homecooked dinners than if you were to wait until the last minute to think about what’s for dinner. If bulk cooking is a foreign concept, the following are some resources to help you along. • Get started by browsing cookbooks, online recipes or speaking with friends and family members about their favorite meals, especially those that may be popular with younger eaters. Concentrate on a specific meal each day. Dinner is the meal many families hope to share, as breakfast and lunch are often eaten outside of the home. Make a list of the ingredients that go into your family’s favorite meals, selecting recipes that use many of the same ingredients. • Wait until you have a free schedule and ample time to go to the store to shop for all of your supplies. Have a list on hand and check off each item as you find it. Cooking in bulk also means you can buy in bulk. Very often bulk-size foods are discounted, saving you both time and money. Shop for the staples that are needed for most meals, including fresh herbs, cheese, spices, oil, and whatever flavorings your family finds most appealing. Large bags of rice and potatoes also are handy to have available. • Take advantage of warehouse club membership fees or manufacturer or store coupon deals on multiple buy specials. Buying jumbo-sized packages of food makes more sense when you intend to cook in bulk. • Clean out the refrigerator and freezer, as you will need plenty of room to store your ingredients, and later, your prepared meals. Figure out when you will be doing the cooking so you know what will need to be refrigerated or frozen once you return from the supermarket. • Establish a dedicated cooking day. Many bulk cookers cook on the weekend. You may be able to have a spouse or friend take the children for the day so there will be no interruptions. • Gather all items that need to be chopped or sliced and set them aside. Leave ample time to chop or slice, which can take a lot of time. Use all of your available cooking resources, such as the grill, stovetop, oven, and slow cooker, at once. Then just drop the ingredients in as necessary. • Have plenty of freezer-safe storage containers on hand. Divvy up the meals into containers and label clearly. Now each day of the week you have a fast meal that can be heated up in no time. Fresh bread and a salad may be the only other components you need.

EMAIL Kevin had shingles. Those of us who spend much time in a doctor’s office should appreciate this! Doesn’t it seem more and more that physicians are running their practices like an assembly line? Here’s what happened to Kevin: Kevin walked into a doctor’s office and the receptionist asked him what he had. Kevin said: ‘Shingles.’ So she wrote down his name, address, medical insurance number and told him to have a seat. Fifteen minutes later a nurse’s aide came out and asked Kevin what he had…. Kevin said, ‘Shingles.’ So she wrote down his height, weight, a complete medical history and told Kevin to wait in the examining room. A half hour later a nurse came in and asked Kevin what he had. Kevin said, ‘Shingles..’ So the nurse gave Kevin a blood test, a blood pressure test, an electrocardiogram, and told Kevin to take off all his clothes and wait for the doctor. An hour later the doctor came in and found Kevin sitting patiently in the nude and asked Kevin what he had. Kevin said, ‘Shingles.’ The doctor asked, ‘Where?’ Kevin said, ‘Outside on the truck. Where do you want me to unload ’em??’

Casting in England BY BILL DYER Special to the Piedmont Shopper The one thing that most NASCAR stockers are concerned most about centers on and in around engines and blocks and their longevity. Most blocks now used by Ford and Chevrolet in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series are born at Grainger & Worrall (G&W), a family-owned company nestled in the British West Midlands in the county of Shropshire, England. And it doesn’t stop there. Every Ford, Chevrolet and Dodge that run in NHRA Pro Stock drag racing events use the blocks that are cast by this small company. Due to a confidentiality agreement with Formula racers, G&W is hush about what they do for that type of racing, but several teams, including the dominant Mercedes-AMG use G&W blocks. The company also supplies castings to teams in WRC, LeMans, and FIA Touring Car racing. “Motorsports gets all the headlines,” executive director Edward Grainger told Car & Driver. “But that is only about 20 percent of our business.” The company’s 500-plus employees are kept busy casting blocks and other components for the Bugatti Veyron, Bentley Mulsanne and Koenigsegg Agera. This is all new to me, and the huge part they played in the development of Ford’s 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine. “Our foundries are very modern and new,” explains Keith Denholm, G&W’s head of engineering. “It’s not unusual to go out on the floor and see laser scanning being used to make a mold. It’s closer to a laboratory than a coal-fired, dusty, and dirty environment.” G&W made its case in NASCAR’s business in the early 2000s, casting the wildly successful GM R07 block with exceptionally thin cylinder walls. It’s a tough casting, and the evidence is clear. Chevrolet has won the NASCAR manufacturers’ championship every year since the R07 was machined and introduced into NASCAR racing. “Instead of number of races, its number of championships we’ve won,” says Grainger. In summation, I suppose you don’t need, although it helps, a household name to come in and dominate NASCAR. •• Engine changes coming: NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France told SiriusXM Radio that ‘significant’ engine changes, which most likely bring a reduction in horsepower, for its premier series is on the way. Appears to be just another costly step NASCAR is using that hopefully will enhance its race track product. “We’re going to make that happen,” France said. That’s part of the overall rules packages that we design and hopefully control costs. The engine is an integral part of that. We also have to be in step as much as possible with the car manufacturers and where they’re going with technology and different things. The engine will get a significant change. I’m not going to say for ’15, but we are certainly sizing that up. It’s very important for us to get it right.” Sprint Cup engines generate 850 horsepower, and are built by TRD and Triad Racing Technologies (Toyota), Roush-Yates Engines (Ford) and ERC Engines, and Hendrick Motorsports (Chevrolet). The constant changes of rules, including engines are costly…..to the owners and not NASCAR. Doug Yates, for an example, said he has already spent $4 million on engine cost ahead of 2014, and there was no end in sight. Engine changes are like a pendulum; a change in its direction is regular. NASCAR needs to stop the pendulum, and fix it. These $20 million year sponsorship fees for each team are getting rather rare. The sport needs to settle down if it’s to survive.

Service- Related Hearing Loss Hearing loss is one of the most common disabilities for military personnel. It can come from all types of experiences and sources: aircraft engines, firearms, trucks, artillery and helicopters. Once the fragile nerve cells in the ear are damaged, you have hearing loss or tinnitus (ringing or buzzing in the ears). If you ever served in a combat zone, hearing loss can be even greater. If you’ve had hearing loss that you’ve tried to ignore, don’t. It’s not going to get better on its own. If you’ve missed out on some of the words in conversations, or if you keep asking people to repeat what they’ve said, or even if the music you used to listen to doesn’t sound the same anymore, you likely have hearing loss. In most cases, it can be fixed with hearing aids or implants. Depending on your rate of loss, getting your hearing back could open up a whole world. The Department of Veterans Affairs even

has a Progressive Tinnitus Management program. The first step is to call the VA audiology clinic to schedule a full audiology workup for service-related hearing loss or tinnitus. Even if you think you don’t have hearing loss, go anyway and get a baseline workup for future comparison. Another option, if you can’t get a fast appointment at a VA facility, is to check your community. Often audiologists and hearingaid providers will offer free hearing tests. Tell them you need both the “speech discrimination” and “puretone” tests. If you show any hearing loss, that’s your first document in submitting a claim to the VA. If your hearing loss is determined to be servicerelated, a hearing aid will provided free of charge, and batteries under certain circumstances. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Memories of Edwine “Ed” Cofflin 9/11/45 8/4/15 As the smoke swirls around my head, from the cigar that h a n g s d o w n from his mouth, I watch closely as he ties my shoes, a routine for us every morning, before our day. The gentle and quiet man, of few words, made quite an impression on me and my brother. His presence in our lives made us feel secure, comforted and safe. My memories of him as a loyal and good man, that with a gentle way about him, let us know his love, even if the words weren’t easy to say. GOD’s love with you, Father of mine. I will see you again.

I still remember the sound of your last breath, I can still hear words that you said before your death, I can still feel your hands entangled warmly in mine, I can still envision your smile, faint but still so ne.Although I do remember the last promise I made to you, stopping my ow of tears, I haven’t been able to. Me and Corey miss you so much. We only wanted you. They say memories are golden, well maybe that’s true but we never wanted memories, we only wanted you. A million times we needed you, a million times we’ve cried. If Love alone could have saved you, you never would have died. In life we loved you dearly. In death we Love you still. In our hearts you hold a place no one can ever ll. If tears could build a stairway and heartache make a lane, we’d walk the path to heaven to bring you back. Again, our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same. But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again. We miss you so Mom. We’ll meet one day at the Pearly Gates of Heaven. Until then be our Guardian Angel. Heart Broken, Missing you Love, Carolyn, Corey, Jerry, Nosey was two sons: John Thomas Barbour, of Lexington, Kentucky, and Brian Scott Barbour (fiancé, Lilly Huskett), of Wythville, Virginia. These boys were his greatest love and the main focus of his life. Also left to cherish his memory, are his favorite (and only) sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Tommy Moore, which he gave the nicknames of “Jute” and “Mo” of Danville, Virginia. Of course their son, Michael Moore, of Roanoke, was his favorite (and only) nephew, whom he nicknamed “Mi”. An adorable granddaughter, Nico Barbour, whom he cherished and will not get to see grow up, definitely left some precious little footprints on his heart. He was her “Grams”! A very special lady in his life was Jackie Walker, of Danville. She was his soulmate and best friend. She stayed by his side, providing heartfelt care, and that hand to hold to the very end. He is also survived by his father-in-law, William Mumpower of Calhoun, GA, husband of his loving mother-in-law, Rebecca Herndon Mumpower who passed in January of 2014. Two aunts, Eleanor Bogart, of Danville, and his aunt, Nancy H. Keaton, who lived next door will hold dear his memories. He also leaves behind several cousins with memories of fun times gone by. Lyn served as Danville’s City Treasurer from 2008 until his death. He was eternally grateful to the overwhelming number of citizens who voted to allow him to serve in this capacity. He also worked as the City Tax Assessor for several years. He served on the Board of Directors for Roman Eagle Health and Rehabilitation
Center and also kept an interest in the Boy Scouts of America. Lyn was proud of his Schoolfield Heritage. He was a Mason for over 40 years and mentored many “Brothers”. He served as District Deputy Grand Master for the 38th Masonic District, and Worshipful Master and Secretary for Morotock Lodge 210. If there was any question about Masons, he was the man who could answer it. He was a member of Unity Presbyterian Church, after it merged with Burton Memorial Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder. Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. There will be a graveside service at Mountain View Cemetery on Tuesday, August 18, 2015 at 11 am with Masonic Rites. The funeral will be led by Rev. John Losee, of Unity Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Monday, August 17, 2015 from 6pm until 8:30pm. At other times part of the family will be at the home of his sister, 651 Dover Place, Danville, VA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite charity. Swicegood Funeral Service is respectfully serving the Barbour family.

“The Day I Told My Church I Was Moving” I stood before my church at the end of a Sunday morning service, and in my most solemn voice said, “And now, I have a rather serious announcement to make.” I let a hush fall across the auditorium, and said, “My family and I are going to be moving,” then I let a few seconds pass and said, “from where we live now to right here in Moorseboro.” I expected a few nervous chuckles, and a “you got us” kind of reaction. Instead, the entire church body broke out into spontaneous and lengthy applause. That I was not expecting. We had lived in our old house since before we started the church. The tiny house of 960 square feet served Dana and I well for a while, but when kids started coming along, it quickly got cramped. Several months ago the Lord let us come across an incredibly unique opportunity; a large house in one of our favorite locations in the county that could be bought for pennies on the dollar. It had been severely damaged, so much so, that no one else really wanted it and no bank would finance it. We took enough money out of our personal retirement account to buy it and to get the materials needed to fix it. Thanks to the work we had done through the years in the old church building, and what we did while building the new one, I knew how

to repair all of the damage. And our sweet members, once we told them about it, let it be known that they were anxious to help with the labor as well. The repairs, then, did not cause us trouble in the least. God gave us exactly what we needed, and we are beyond grateful. We have lived in the house for a few months now, and have almost forgotten what it was like to trip all over each other trying to move around in a tiny house. But one thing I will never forget, not even should I live to be a thousand, is that lovely and unexpected sound of clapping as my church found out I would not be leaving. I have always loved my church family, but that moment they became more dear to me than I could ever have imagined. There is something powerful about a gesture, even a simple one, that says, “We love you and want to be with you.” And if it means that much to me in a church setting, imagine how much it can mean and how powerful it can be in other settings. What about a husband and wife who consistently communicate that message to each other? It is easy to let a lot of time slip by without doing so. But things taken for granted are often things that can be taken away. Plants wither and die without water and fertilizer, marriages wither and die

without verbal and visible affirmation. What about a church and pastor? Love is not enough. Communicated love is enough. Let it be seen and said from pulpit to pew and pew to pulpit, this message that you love and need one another. What about parents and children? There has never been a harder age in which to parent or a harder age in which to be a child. Temptations and torments abound. Children, let your parents know how much you appreciate them and need them. Parents, communicate to your children every single day how very much they are worth to you. And how about our relationship to the Lord? If it blesses us to have people communicate to us how much we are loved, how much more will it bless our Creator when we give that message to Him?
HE has already done so for us in the simplest yet most profound way possible: with two pieces of wood and three nails.

1. Name the male artist who had a 1964 hit with “Right or Wrong.” 2. The Strawberry Alarm Clock was the result of the merging of which two bands? 3. Who was the first to release “Let’s Hang On”? 4. Name the group that released “Listen to What the Man Said.” 5. Name the song that contains this lyric: “Well those drifters days are past me now, I’ve got so much more to think about, Deadlines and commitments, What to leave in, what to leave out.” Answers 1. Ronnie Dove. The song launched his career, and most of his early releases reached the Top 20 charts. Dove still performs on the East Coast, and is still in top form. 2. Thee Sixpence and Waterfyrd Traene. “Incense and Peppermints” (1967) was their only No. 1 hit. 3. The Four Seasons in 1965, followed quickly by Jan and Dean in 1966. 4. Wings, in 1975. 5. “Against the Wind,” by Bob Seger in 1980. Seger said that the idea came from his days as a crosscountry runner. One line bothered him for a long time -- “Wish I didn’t know now what I didn’t know then” -- but he left it in because others liked it. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Cancer Terms To Know
someone they love is diagnosed with cancer.
Receiving a cancer diagnosis can be a lifechanging event, and the impacts are both immediate and long-term. Upon being diagnosed with cancer, men and women may find themselves perusing their dictionaries to learn the meanings of certain terms related to their disease and treatments. The following are a handful of terms that men and women may encounter when they or
• Acute: When cancer symptoms are acute, they begin and worsen quickly but do not last over an extended period of time. • Benign: Describes tumors that are not cancerous. • Carcinoma: A cancer that starts in the epithelial tissue of the skin or a cancer of the lining of the internal organs. • Chemotherapy: The use of drugs to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy drugs are often used in combination to fight cancer. • In situ: Also called “noninvasive cancer,” “in situ” refers to cancer that has not spread to nearby tissue. • Invasive cancer: Cancer that has spread outside the layer of tissue in which it started. Such cancer may grow into other tissues or parts of the body. • Malignant: A term that describes tumors that are cancerous and capable of invading nearby tissue or spreading to other parts of the body. • Metastasis: The development of secondary malignant growths away from the primary site of the cancer. When cancer has metastasized, that means it has begun to spread to others part of the body. • Oncologist: Doctors who specialize in treating patients with cancer. • Pathologist: Doctors who specialize in interpreting lab tests and evaluating cells, tissues and organs to diagnose disease. • Sarcoma: A type of cancer that develops in the tissues that support and connect the body, including fat and muscle. • Stage: A term used to describe how advanced a cancer is. Stages differ for each type of cancer, and the stage may shed light on where in the body the cancer is, whether or not is has spread and its effects on the body at the time of diagnosis. • Tumor: Masses that form when cells start to change and grow uncontrollably.
Your fences need to be horse-high, pig-tight and bull-strong. Keep skunks and bankers at a distance. Life is simpler when you plow around the stump. A bumble bee is considerably faster than a John Deere tractor. Words that soak into your ears are whispered… not yelled. Meanness don’t jes’ happen overnight. Forgive your enemies; it messes up their heads. Do not corner something that you know is meaner than you. It don’t take a very big person to carry a grudge. You cannot unsay a cruel word. Every path has a few puddles. When you wallow with pigs, expect to get dirty. The best sermons are lived, not preached. Most of the stuff people worry about ain’t never gonna happen anyway. Don’t judge folks by their relatives. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer. Live a good, honorable life… Then when you get older and think back, you’ll enjoy it a second time. Don ‘t interfere with somethin’ that ain’t bothering you none. Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a Rain dance. If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin’. Sometimes you get, and sometimes you get got. The biggest troublemaker you’ll probably ever have to deal with, watches you from the mirror every mornin’. Always drink upstream from the herd. Good judgment comes from experience, and a lotta that comes from bad judgment. Lettin’ the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier than puttin’ it back in. If you get to thinkin’ you’re a person of some influence, try orderin’ somebody else’s dog around.. Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Leave the rest to God. Don’t pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he’ll just kill you. Most times, it just gets down to common sense.

Home improvements are typically made to improve the functionality and look of a home, but renovations also can increase the value of a home. Certain changes to a home can make it more attractive to prospective buyers, while other renovations may make a home less appealing. For example, a complete overhaul of an outdated kitchen is often a smart financial move, while installing a pool or hot tub may not be worth the cost to homeowners. Separating the good from the bad renovations makes smart financial sense, and homeowners looking to improve their homes’ resale values may want to avoid the following projects. * Bedroom and garage conversions: Changing a room’s traditional function often turns off buyers. For example, turning a garage into a home gym might seem like a great idea for you, but it may not be so appealing to prospective buyers. Buyers can certainly reconvert the space, but they would consider the costs of such a conversion when making their offers on the home. * Stylized colors on trims and rooms: Painting over unappealing colors is a project many homeowners can handle. However, some may be discouraged by a home that has too many bright colors or textures on the walls and trims. Buyers often want homes that are move-in ready, meaning they can get settled in before undertaking large projects. A living room painted in purple or zebra print may not fit the design scheme of many buyers. Dark colors do not easily disappear, and taping off and painting trimwork or changing it entirely can be equally time-consuming. Stick with neutral colors when selling a home, even if this means giving rooms a new coat of paint before putting your house on the market. * Outdoor hot tubs and indoor spa tubs: Many people find soaking in a bubbling brew of hot water quite inviting. But buyers often do not want to inherit a used hot tub. Although hot tubs are cleaned and maintained with sanitizing chemicals, some people may view them as unsanitary. Removing a hot tub can be labor-intensive. And much like a pool, a hot tub may not be appealing to buyers with young children. * Removing closets: Closet space is often high on buyers’ priority lists. Turning closet space into an office or removing a closet to make a room bigger may be fine for those who are staying put. But these modifications can be a turn-off to prospective buyers. * Too many features: In an effort to “keep up with the Joneses,” some homeowners will over-improve their home to the point that it outshines all others on the street. There is a case for having nice things, but homeowners may struggle to sell a home that is disproportionate to other homes in the area. Practice moderation when making improvements to attract more buyers. These suggestions are merely guidelines and should not replace the advice of a reputable real estate agent when marketing a home. Housing features and what buyers are interested in vary across the country. Some items may be desireable in specific areas but undesireable elsewhere. Making informed choices before renovating can help homeowners recoup the largest share of their investments.

LBJ Autograph
--Q: I have a signed photo of President Lyndon B. Johnson. Can you help me establish a value for it? -Conrad, McAllen, Texas A: Authentic signatures of Lyndon Johnson are illusive, since many of his letters and photos were signed by auto-pen when he occupied the White House. Prices vary depending on desirability and historic value. A check of the Internet revealed dozens of specimens for sale, including a letter from 1969, $199; signed color photo, $195; signed index card, $500; and even an auto-pen signed 1964 Election Day postcard for $55. Other signatures were offered for as little as $20. You need the services of an established autograph dealer who can both authenticate and appraise your photo. *** Q: What do you know about California Dresden dishes. -- Suzi, Minneapolis A: Each time I get a question about older china, I grab two books from my collection: Kovel’s New Dictionary of Marks: Pottery & Porcelain 1850 to the Present, by Ralph and Terry Kovel. It is published by Crown and offers hundreds of company marks, making it fairly easy to identify various pieces. For more detailed information, there’s nothing quite like Lehner’s Encyclopedia
of U.S. Marks on Pottery, Porcelain & Clay by Louis Lehner. With more than 8,000 marks, logos and symbols, this hefty book is invaluable. *** Q: I have just inherited a set of sterling flatware in the Pendant of Fruit pattern. I have been told the silverware is more than a century old and quite scarce. -- Polly, Boston A: According to “Warman’s Sterling Silver Flatware: Value & Identification” by Phil Dries, your sterling set was manufactured by Lunt in 1939. Lunt silversmiths was established in 1901 in Greenfield, Mass., as Roger, Lunt & Bowlen Company. *** Q: I have a Singer sewing machine that is the Model 15-30. It is in an oak cabinet that has been damaged by dampness. A neighbor has offered me $600 for it. Should I sell? -- Bill, Indianapolis, Ind. A: Take the money and run. According to several dealers I consulted, your machine is probably worth about $300, and perhaps even less with the cabinet damage you described.
