Coming Soon GoDocs Healthcare Center

GoDocs, local mobile healthcare service, has been growing by leaps and bounds since it’s beginning in 2014. Their service of taking care of patients from the comfort of their very own home has solidified them a place in the medical community. They now have patients who don’t necessarily require healthcare in the home, but prefer the provider relationship that GoDocs creates. “We’re changing the industry with service.” says GoDocs Business Manager Donald Fouts. “As a patient, you don’t understand how smart a doctor is. If they tried to explain brain surgery to us, we wouldn’t understand it. But the thing we do understand is being treated like a human being...being known by your first name and being catered to. It’s all about the relationship with the patient.” The community asked, and GoDocs has answered in the form of a medical office, where patients can be seen for primary care and any number of procedures, including colds, Diabetes, special injections, massage therapy, joint/back/knee problems, wound care, and more. At this point, they’re not ruling anything out as far as possibilities for the future, and it seems the sky is the limit when it comes to meeting the needs of their patients. Set to open October 1st, the almost 5,000 square ft building on Piney Forest Road that is now GoDocs Healthcare Center will do things a little differently with their atmosphere than we’re accustomed to seeing in medical clinics. At the “ultra modern and plush medical center”, comfort is a priority, leading them to offer a warm, inviting style for their waiting rooms, featuring contemporary colors, beautiful flooring, recliners sofas, televisions, and even someone to bring you coffee while you wait. The facility is even equipped with an anti microbial air filtration system that cleanses the air flowing through the office. The GoDocs team is growing with their practice, and have recently recruited Kelli Banner, FNP-C. They are also proud to welcome Wendy Rodriguez FNP-C, formerly of Dr. Ivan Lazo’s office, and her patients to the new GoDocs Healthcare Center. GoDocs will begin taking appointments at the new clinic upon their opening at 434-857-5644.

* Twerking may be a modern phenomenon, but in the 16th century, it was not unusual for a gentleman to be caught twirking (with an “i,” not an “e”) in public. Of course, twirling the hairs of one’s mustache generally didn’t raise an eyebrow in polite society. * It was 20th-century Hungarian author and psychiatrist Thomas Szasz who made the following sage observation: “The greatest analgesic, soporific, stimulant, tranquilizer, narcotic, and to some extent even antibiotic -- in short, the closest thing to a genuine panacea known to medical science -- is work.” * The story that’s been adapted to film more than any other is the fairy tale “Cinderella.” * While it’s true that paying to use transportation routes is nothing new, you might be surprised to learn the extent of some early pay-for-travel routes. In England in the early 1800s, there already were 30,000 miles of toll roads -- not to mention 8,000 toll gates. * During World War II, money was smuggled into German POW camps using Monopoly games -the real stuff was stashed in among the fake cash.

* If you see a group of ducks in the water, you can call them, collectively, a “paddling” of ducks. In the air, however, the correct collective term is a “team.” * Before he became famous in his eponymous sitcom, Jerry Seinfeld appeared on the TV show “Benson” -- he played the governor’s speechwriter. He didn’t last long, though; he was fired after just three episodes. *** Thought for the Day: “By the age of 6 the average child will have completed the basic American education. ... From television, the child will have learned how to pick a lock, commit a fairly elaborate bank holdup, prevent wetness all day long, get the laundry twice as white, and kill people with a variety of sophisticated armaments.” -- Russell Baker (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

EMAIL An 80 year-old man walks into a bar, sits down, and starts crying. The bartender asks, “What’s wrong?” The old man looks at the bartender through teary eyes and between sobs says, “I married a beautiful woman two days ago. She’s a natural blonde, twenty-five, intelligent, a marvelous cook, a meticulous housekeeper, extremely sensitive to my wants and needs, very giving, my best friend, and intensely passionate in bed.” The bartender stares at the old man for a brief moment and says, “But that sounds great! You have what every man wants in a woman, so why are you crying?” The old man looks at the bartender and says, “I can’t remember where I live!”

A dead horse BY BILL DYER Special to the Piedmont Shopper Rob Kauffman, co-owner of Michael Waltrip Racing (MWR), said Friday at Bristol Motor Speedway he has had enough of pouring his own money into Michael Waltrip Racing without seeing results. Kauffman said MWR would cease operations after the current Sprint Cup season. “Michael Waltrip Racing wouldn’t have existed through today without substantial and continued financial support from me,” said Kauffman, a noted amateur racer and a successful businessman. “From a business standpoint, that didn’t make sense any longer. You can’t have a top-10 budget and top-10 resources and not be in the top-10 for a sustained period of time. “It’s a performance-related business,” he added. “It’s all about performance. It’s a great sport but a very difficult business model. From a business decision, it just made sense to not go forward with that organization, which is not commercially viable.” It would have been viable, Mr. Kauffman, if you would have been watching Waltrip running up and down pit road asking childless questions as a pre-race analyst for NASCAR on Fox. I suppose his appearances on “Dancing with the Stars” could also be called viable. MWR expanded its go nowhere organization from two cars to three in 2012 when Clint Bowyer was added to the roster. But that was short-lived after Bowyer and MWR were involved in the Richmond race-manipulation scandal in the final race of the 2013 season that to this day has left an everlasting scar not only on MWR but on NASCAR as a whole. “Certainly that was a pretty heavy blow to our organization,” Kauffman said. “It caused a big restructuring; 2014 was at some level a large reset for everybody, especially on the financial side. The performance of the company wasn’t where it needed to be, and that kind of forced some decisions.” Losing NAPA when MWR attempted to manipulate a race to get Martin Truex Jr. into the Chase cost the company at least a 15 million a year sponsorship, and from that point on MWR was a dead horse. “Rob Kauffman has invested a tremendous amount into MWR and into this sport,” said Bowyer. “That being said, he made a business decision to move forward and that direction as we all know from his previous statements is the Ganassi organization.” Despite speculation that Chip Ganassi Racing would add a third team for the Cup season next year and that team would be Bowyer and bring the 5-hour Energy sponsorship with him, Ganassi officials confirmed over the weekend that they will remain a two-car operation next year. Ganassi currently fields cars for Jamie McMurray and Kyle Larson, and despite the addition of Kauffman as an investor that wouldn’t change. I’m no expert on a driver’s expertise, but if Kauffman thinks McMurray, Larson and Bowyer are championship material then I’d like to know why. “My crystal ball, unfortunately, is not clear,” said Kauffman. “In a parallel universe, I’m not sure what would happen.” Kauffman has always had an interest in all things related to racing. He’s also comfortable behind the wheel of a race car, having raced modern and vintage sports cars in races around the globe, including the prestigious 24 Hours of LeMans and the Rolex 24 at Daytona. That’s good credentials. But racing vintage sports cars around the world and having bundles of money doesn’t necessarily assure a co-owner of a partner in a NASCAR team a championship. Time will tell.

Sugar Alcohols Aren’t Sugars or Alcohol

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently was diagnosed as being prediabetic and told to watch my sugar intake. So I now read the nutrition facts on packages. However, I am confused about the listed sugars. Sometimes the label includes both “sugar” and “sugar alcohols.” For instance, a package can read “sugars 1 g” and “sugar alcohols 11 g.” Would my sugar intake be 1 g or 12 g? What is the difference, and what should I avoid/limit? -- B.D.

ANSWER: First, congratulations on reading labels. There is a lot of good information to be found that can help you decide whether something is a healthy food for you. That being said, sugar alcohols are confusing. Sugar alcohols have nothing to do with the type of alcohol in beer, wine or spirits, and they aren’t sugars either. A sugar alcohol, such as sorbitol or xylitol, is an incompletely absorbed carbohydrate. Since they are incompletely absorbed, you get only some of the calories, and your blood sugar goes up less than if you had had the same amount of sweetness with regular sugar. A rough but reasonable rule of thumb is to count about half the grams of sugar alcohol as sugar, for the purposes of counting sugar grams. So in your example, it would be about 6.5 grams of sugar. You might wonder what happens to the unabsorbed sugar alcohol. It continues through your GI tract and acts as a laxative. Some people are very sensitive and will have diarrhea with just a little sugar alcohol; others tolerate more. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been suffering for many years from miserable episodes of perineal pain related to my benign, enlarged prostate. My urologist’s recommendation of NSAIDs and sitz baths has afforded very limited relief. I would appreciate any suggestions you have to offer. -- J.S.K. ANSWER: I see a lot of people with benign enlargement of the prostate, and the most common symptoms are inability to empty the bladder easily and having to urinate frequently. Persistent pain would make me concerned that the prostate enlargement is not the cause, or not the only cause, of the pain. I would think carefully about a bladder stone, chronic inflammation of the prostate and interstitial cystitis as a short list. Chronic pelvic pain is a condition much more frequently encountered in women, and there are specialists in evaluating just that complex problem. Men can get chronic pelvic pain too, and I am concerned that it often is assumed to be due to the prostate, when there are many other possibilities. It’s time for you to be reevaluated. The booklet on the prostate gland discusses treatments for enlargement as well as cancer. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 1001, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Keep Your Heart Running Strong Into Your Golden Years Heart health should be a concern for people of all ages, but especially so for men and women over 50. That’s because, according to the American Heart Association, even men and women who are free of cardiovascular disease at age 50 are at a significant lifetime risk of developing the disease. But heart disease does not have to be an accepted byproduct of aging. For example, a 2014 study published in the AHA journal Circulation found that maintaining or increasing physical activity after age 65 can improve the heart’s well-being and lower risk of heart attack. In addition to increasing physical activity as they age, older men and women who understand heart disease and learn to recognize its symptoms have a greater chance of minimizing its affects and lowering their risk of having a heart attack. What are the symptoms of heart disease? Heart disease is a blanket term used to describe a host of conditions, so symptoms vary depending on each individual condition. The following are some of the more widely known conditions and their symptoms: • Hypertension: Also known as high blood pressure, hypertension is a largely symptomless form of heart disease. The AHA notes that the idea that hypertension produces symptoms such as difficulty sleeping, facial flushing, nervousness, and sweating is a misconception. Symptoms typically do not alert men and women to the presence of hypertension, highlighting the emphasis men and women should place on routine visits to the doctor’s office, where their blood pressure can be taken. • Heart attack: The symptoms of a heart attack are different than the symptoms of heart disease that may lead to heart attack. The former can be found by visiting www. heart.org. Signs that you may be heading toward a heart attack include undue fatigue, palpitations (the sensation that your heart is skipping a beat or beating too rapidly), dyspnea (difficulty or labored breathing), chest pain or discomfort from increased activity. • Arrhythmia: Arrhythmia means your heartbeat is irregular, and men and women often mistakenly believe arrhythmia only afflicts those who already have been diagnosed with heart disease or have had a heart attack. But arrhythmia can affect even those men and women who have healthy hearts and no history of cardiovascular disease. Symptoms of arrhythmia can vary greatly, from a single premature beat to a series of premature beats that occur in rapid succession. Arrhythmia that lasts long enough to affect heart function may include symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, fatigue, dizziness, lightheadedness, shortness of breath, and chest pain. How can I protect my heart? Heart healthy habits take some effort, but men and women can protect their hearts regardless of their ages. • Get sufficient exercise. At least 30 minutes of exercise per day can protect against disease. • Quit smoking. Smoking increases your risk for a host of ailments, including heart disease. Quitting is a great way to start getting your heart and other parts of your body back on track. • Include heart-healthy foods in your diet. A diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables and low in cholesterol, salt and saturated fat promotes heart health. • Don’t drink alcohol to excess. Like smoking, drinking alcohol to excess can lead to a host of problems, such as high blood pressure, arrhythmia and high cholesterol, each of which increases your risk of heart disease. • Lose weight. Being overweight or obese is a major risk factor for heart disease. If you have already started to exercise daily and eat a more heart-healthy diet, then you’re on your way to losing weight. Consult your physician if diet and exercise don’t seem to be helping you to shed pounds. Heart disease kills millions of people across the globe each year, many of whom are over 50. But men and women who learn about heart disease and how to reduce their risk stand a far greater chance of fighting the disease.

HOW CAN YOU GIVE BACK?

PEEP TALK ! You don’t ever have to worry about anyone ceasing to read the Piedmont Shopper. My uncle, Henry D. Hopkins, is 87 years old & he goes somewhere to get a stack of them each week. He delivers them to the nursing home, and to his friends in his neighborhood. He makes sure everyone gets a copy every week! He and his wife Shirley love to share it and laugh at the jokes and stories. That paper is the heartbeat for a lot of people! My daughter, Ruby, sells Scentsy and she has used your paper for many occasions. She knows that is the one paper that everyone reads! Our church, Central Boulevard Church of God, just used your paper for our Vendor Spring Fling on 4/11/15, and I am sure half or more of the people came because of the Shopper!” -Deborah Severt “I feel our business has grown every year by advertising in the Piedmont Shopper. Judy Bryant is my advertising consultant.”- Bert Sellers Owner • Seller Brothers, Inc. “We moved here over 5 years ago and LOVE your paper. It was our first time selling items through your ads. Thank you so very much for all you do in giving of yourselves to help others. God bless!” Howard and Lynda Richardson

“Thank you for your free service, had a great yard sale.” -Terri Lovell

“You sold a walker for me, thank you!” -C.C. Moore, Danville

“The Piedmont Shopper is the BEST route to go for advertising your business. They’re professional, fun & truly take care of their clients. I use them for ALL of my advertising & will continue to do so.” Tammy Wiles Owner • Perfect Body Fitness Center & Sports Complex “People ask me all the time to advertise in their media and my answer is always no. My reason to them is I spend all my advertising dollars I can with the Piedmont Shopper. We get the most results from them due to their loyal readers and awesome staff. Lesley Tucker took us from a non existent business to a successful well know business in less than a year. Her insightful ad designs pop off the page and have the customers walking through the door. “ Dustin Pierce - Owner - C&D Family Pawn “My experience with Judy Bryant at the Piedmont Shopper: I have worked with Judy for over 7 years and she is always willing to do whatever I ask of her. Sometimes I send an ad in late and she manages to get it in for me. I receive many applicants from my advertisements in the Piedmont Shopperit reaches so many people in our area each week. Thank you, Judy, for your hard work!” Vicky Miller - HR Piney Forest Health & Rehab Center

“I mainly run classifieds in the Piedmont Shopper several times throughout the year. I ALWAYS sell what I’ve listed and sell it FAST! I’m very PLEASED with the Piedmont Shopper and will CONTINUE to use them in the future.” Hubert Inman • Piedmont Shopper Classifieds User • Danville, VA

“The Piedmont Shopper is a GREAT way for us to advertise. All I need is an idea and they take care of the rest. Judy Bryant is the BEST! Her expertise, professionalism and personality make it a pleasure to advertise in the Piedmont Shopper.” Ed Whitlow • Owner Danville Appliance We at Gina’s Family Restaurant LOVE the Piedmont Shopper. Advertising is easy, convenient, price friendly and effective! The new layout is awesome and the coupons have been a great asset to our business! 1. Who wrote and recorded “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry”? 2. Name the one big hit by James & Bobby Purify. 3. Who were Fred Hellerman, Pete Seeger, Ronnie Gilbert and Lee Hays? 4. How did Ernie K-Doe (of “Mother-in-Law” fame) get his name? 5. Name the song that contains this lyric: “She had a place in his life. He never made her think twice. As he rises to her apology, anybody else would surely know he’s watching her go.” Answers 1. Country legend Hank Williams. He wrote the song to be spoken instead of sung, until he discovered it was due to be released. 2. “I’m Your Puppet,” in 1966. After Robert retired in 1971, James paired up with Ben Moore, who also took the stage name Bobby Purify. 3. The Weavers, a folk group that started in 1948. 4. He was born Ernest Kador, Jr. The 1961 song was his only No. 1 hit. 5. “What a Fool Believes,” written by Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins, in 1979, and recorded by The Doobie Brothers. We were told on June 3, 2015, that the love of my life had breast cancer. The strength and power of Jesus has not let up since that day. Though I feel as a child, only good will come from this fight, for my God is the Creator of all; the Being that has breathed life into all that is in existence. His words are unchanged and are power; His grace will sustain us. I am excited to see His powerful hand work throughout this next year. I never fully grasped the words of Paul telling me to glorify and praise the Lord no matter my circumstances. But, how I’ve had such a revelation over the last couple of months and can say that I have, at no other time in my life, felt like praising God more.

To each individual, to each business in the Southside area, to each church, to every hand involved and to our home church Swansonville Pentecostal Holiness Church, we are eternally indebted to you all. Words are not sufficient, nor could we ever repay you all for the overwhelming support. As a husband and father of three I THANK YOU for your selflessness. The grace and power of God has surely been bestowed upon us over the past two months. We are unworthy but certainly extremely grateful. Thank you is unfortunately not sufficient for your generosity. May God return it to you multiplied many times over.

I do not know much of what the future holds, but I do know, that at every crossroad, at every turn, at every fork in the road, at every mountain, at every valley, at every good, and at every bad, Jesus will already be there standing and waiting. And, I do know, that with every rising and setting of the sun, as each day comes, I will be there holding her hand. I will carry her as she has carried so many, and when I don’t have the strength, HE will carry us both. Glory… glory… glory… glory to the King of Kings, Lord of Lords… our Savior Jesus Christ. Four Easy Tips For A Basement Makeover (MS) — By Scott McGillivray The start of a new season is the perfect time to check some tasks off of your “to-do” list — whether it’s to get in shape or tackle at-home projects. If you’re planning on making some simple but effective changes at home, here are some tips on how to give your basement a total 180-degree makeover. Soundproof it Installing acoustic insulation is the perfect excuse to crank up the subwoofer, host a get-together or let the kids run wild. Soundproofing is the ultimate solution to maximize your basement’s peace, quiet and privacy. Industry experts suggest using Roxul Safe n’ Sound, which effectively absorbs sound and is easy to work with. Out with the old, in with a floor Installing a new floor or updating the existing one can improve the overall comfort level and look of your basement. Many unfinished basements have basic concrete flooring, which is cold year-round. Flooring options are endless — hardwood, laminate, cork and Berber flooring all add warmth to a basement bedroom or TV room; play mats are great for kids’ playrooms; and carpets are perfect to make any room feel more comfy and welcoming. Get creative with a fresh coat of paint Transform the dull and boring space into an inviting entertainment oasis or a colorful playroom with a simple coat of paint. When considering the paint, think about what color will compliment your existing furniture. To add some drama, consider adding depth and visual interest to your space with a different colored accent wall. Accessorize it Throw pillows, rugs, lighting, and artwork are simple additions that can immediately enhance or change your basement’s look and feel. Pot lights can modernize, while art work and throw pillows can add a splash of color. Decide on a theme and color scheme for your room and keep your eye out for staple pieces that will make it feel like an entirely new space. Scott McGillivray is the award-winning TV host, a full-time real estate investor, contractor, author, and educator. Follow him on Twitter @smcgillivray.

Q: Is it true that “Twin Peaks” is coming back on the air? Where and when? Will David Lynch be involved? -- Justin D., via email A: In order, your answers are: yes, Showtime, hopefully sometime next year, and yes. Showtime’s head honcho David Nevins spilled the beans recently about the reboot, and one of those beans is that David Lynch will be there to direct season three, which will have at least nine episodes, with some sources reporting as many as 18 episodes. Nevins revealed at the Television Critics Association panel this summer: “I never had any doubts we were going to get [David Lynch] back. This was a huge priority project to me. It became clear that it was going to take more than nine episodes, which was the originally planned for and budgeted length of the series. I really wanted to get David to direct the whole thing, and he wanted to direct the whole thing. We had to work out the details.” He also teased about whether former series stars will be back (as you’ll recall, the series starred Kyle MacLachlan, Lara Flynn Boyle, Richard Beymer, Sherilyn Fenn and Madchen Amick, and featured a young David Duchovny): “You should be optimistic that the people that you want will be there, and there will be some surprises in addition. I’m hoping we make 2016. It’s not clear. It’s ultimately going to be in their control. They’re going to shoot the whole thing and then they’ll start posting ... but I’m hoping sooner rather than later.” *** Q: Can you give me any “Arrow” news? -- Kylie F., Baltimore A: There’s lots of casting news for season four, most recently that Rutina Welsey of “True Blood” and Parker Young of “Suburgatory” are joining the cast as Liza Warner and Alex Davis, respectively. Liza is a cop and a mem-

Kyle MacLachlan Photo Credit: Jojo Whilden - CBS ber of an anti-vigilante task force, while Alex will be a love interest for Thea. And finally, after much teasing throughout season three, we’ll finally meet the mysterious Damien Darhk, who’ll be played by Neal McDonough. Season four of “Arrow” premieres Oct. 7 at 8/7c on the CW. *** Q: I love Tommy Dewey, especially his role of Josh Daniels on “The Mindy Project.” Can you tell me what else I can see him in? -- Ginger D., via email A: Coming in October, you can watch Tommy in Jason Reitman’s latest project called “Casual,” which will air exclusively on Hulu. The story centers on divorced mom Valerie (played by Michaela Watkins) as she rediscovers herself while living with her brother, Alex (Tommy), and her teenage daughter, Laura (Tara Lynne Barr). The dry, sometimes-dark, dysfunctional-family comedy will have a 10-episode first season, with a new episode released each week (not all at once like Netflix tends to do). The series will follow the same approach as Hulu-exclusive series like “Difficult People” and the newly acquired “The Mindy Project.” Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803; or e-mail her at letters@ cindyelavsky.com. Heating & A/C Equipment

Cinnamon Roasted Butternut Squash 1 large butternut squash, peeled/seeded and cut into 1-inch cubes 3 TB olive oil 2 TB packed brown sugar 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp kosher salt 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 425F with rack on upper middle position. Line baking sheet with heavy duty foil. In a large bowl, toss the squash with remaining ingredients until thoroughly coated. Transfer to foillined baking sheet, in a single layer, without overcrowding the pieces. Roast about 40 minutes, rotating pan midway during baking. When edges are browned and cubes are forktender, remove from oven immediately. You may want to start checking squash around 35 minutes, just to ensure that they don’t become overcooked.
