Danville Police Major Chris Wiles Receives DCC Adjunct Faculty Honors DANVILLE, VA, September 10, 2015 – In his 22 years with the Danville Police Department, Major Christopher Wiles has captured many honors. But, most recently, after bringing his years of law enforcement experience to the classroom, Wiles has been named the 2015 Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Member of the Year at Danville Community College. He received a plaque and a monetary award from the DCC Educational Foundation. “I was very surprised and honored to receive the award. The other faculty members I work with in the Administration of Justice program are all exceptional. I have enjoyed interacting with the students and working with the faculty and staff here at DCC,” says Wiles, who has risen through the ranks in law enforcement, holding positions, such as Patrol Officer, Criminal Investigator, Patrol Supervisor and Major in the Services Division. A DCC committee selected Wiles for the honor, based on nominations from faculty, staff, and students. He has taught the three-credit Report Writing (ADJ 215) course for 10 years. He first taught the class as a traditional lecture class, but now he teaches the class in an online format, which offers greater flexibility for students who are unable to come to the DCC campus. Wiles says he gained considerable experience in report writing as a patrol officer early in his career. Today, he brings that knowledge to his students. His goal as an instructor is to provide the foundational knowledge students need to be successful, first in their academic program, and later, in a career in law enforcement. “It is very rewarding to see my students succeed,” Wiles adds. “Several of my students have gone on to work for the Danville Police Department.” According to John Wilt, Associate Professor of Administration of Justice, the Report Writing class is a required course in the Administration of Justice Associate of Applied Science Degree curriculum. “It provides students with a knowledge of accurate documentation, a component of the criminal justice system that is critically important,” Wilt says. Students also described their satisfaction with Wiles as an instructor. “Our instructor went beyond the call of duty to help us with any problem that we had. We all knew without a doubt that Mr. Wiles was always there to answer our questions,” notes one student in Wiles’ nomination letter. According to Wiles, writing reports is a behind-the-scenes law enforcement task that consumes a great deal of time and serves many purposes, from informing decisions in court cases to shaping criminal justice policy. He says common examples are incident reports, such as traffic citations, and pre-sentence reports, which investigate the history of a person convicted of a crime. “What you see on television and in movies is the exciting side of the criminal justice field. What you don’t see is what takes up a large percentage of a criminal justice employee’s time on the job: documenting those law enforcement actions,” Wiles explains. “It is critically important to accurately document and record actions and incidents. It can be months or years between the time an incident occurs and the time a case moves through the criminal justice system. The documentation of one single incident could be important for a decade or more.”

Some believed that the only cure was to dance day and night until the compulsion ended, so city leaders hired musicians and set aside guild halls for dancing. According to eyewitness documents, people so enthralled expressed their misery but were unable to stop dancing. Those with weak hearts actually died while under the compulsion. As inexplicably as the malady struck, it ended in early September, after affecting about 400 residents.

EMAIL

Wrong Email Address A husband and wife were going on vacation. The wife was on a business trip prior, so the husband went to the destination first and his wife would meet him the next day. When he reached his hotel, he decided to send his wife a quick email. Unfortunately, when typing her address, he mistyped a letter and his note was directed instead to the elderly wife of a preacher who had passed away only the day before. When the preacher’s grieving widow checked her email, she took one look at the monitor, let out a piercing scream, and fell to the floor in a cold faint. At the sound, her family rushed into the room and saw this note on the screen: Dearest Wife, Just got checked in. Everything prepared for your arrival tomorrow. P.S. Sure is hot down here.

Q: My favorite show of last season was “Legends,” starring Sean Bean. Will it be back for another season? I thought it would be back over the summer. -- Patrick K., via email A: Season two of the hit TNT spy thriller -- based on the award-winning book by master spy-novelist Robert Littell -- returns Monday, Nov. 2, at 10 p.m. ET/PT. The show has been completely revamped, with a new supporting cast, locations and more. Sean Bean (“Game of Thrones,” “The Lord of the Rings”) returns as an undercover FBI agent whose world is turned upside down when he discovers that the life he knew -- including his name -- has all been a lie. Now on the run for a murder he didn’t commit, he searches for his true identity, following a trail that takes him to London and the European continent, where he discovers a dark and violent past that holds the key to his future survival. The new 10-epsisode season stars Winter Ave Zoli, Steve Kazee, Aisling Franciosi, Kelly Overton, Klara Issova and Ralph Brown. In addition, Morris Chestnut will guest-star in several episodes, reprising his role from the first season. In case you’re interested, just before the premiere of “Legends,” at 9 p.m., is the fall premiere of the second half of season four of “Major Crimes,” which has been on hiatus since Aug. 10. Mary McDonnell is back as Los Angeles police captain Sharon Raydor, along with G.W. Bailey, Tony Denison, Michael Paul Chan, Raymond Cruz, Kearran Giovanni, Phillip P. Keene, Robert Gossett, Jonathan Del Arco and Graham Patrick Martin. *** Q: Is “Wayward Pines” coming back next season? -- Martin B., Palm Springs, California A: Fox decided not to renew the sci-fi/mystery/thriller, which starred Matt Dillon and Terrence Howard, and was executive-produced by M. Night Shyamalan.

Sean Bean Photo Cred: TNT Originally intended as a stand-alone event miniseries, the head honchos at Fox teased that there might be a season two in the works, if the ratings were there. Apparently they weren’t, because the show was not renewed. At least it wasn’t the type of show to leave viewers hanging: Much like how each season of “American Horror Story” and “True Crime” are set up, “Wayward Pines” was a self-contained close-ended series. *** Q: Is it true that Danny Boyle is going to make a “Trainspotting” sequel? -Samuel R., via email A: God willing and the creek don’t rise! Director Danny Boyle revealed recently that next on his agenda is adapting Irving Welsh’s 2002 novel “Porno” -- the sequel to “Trainspotting,” which picks up a decade later -- for the big screen. Danny told deadline.com: “All the four main actors (Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller and Robert Carlyle) want to come back and do it. Now it is only a matter of getting all their schedules together, which is complicated by two of them doing American TV series.” Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803; or e-mail her at letters@cindyelavsky.com. Special to the Piedmont Shopper Nobody was going to beat Matt Kenseth at Richmond Saturday night. However, there are rules whether you are winning or losing. NASCAR car owner Roger Penske was quite upset when NASCAR officials fail to penalize Kenseth on the final restart of Saturday night’s race Sprint Cup race at Richmond International Speedway. “You just can’t have that kind of officiating,” said Penske, who owns the Fords of Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski. The race was 18 laps from the finish when Kenseth, who was leading the field to green, accelerated quickly and pulled away. Logano, who was second at that time, was either taking a nap or wasn’t ready for the quick restart, failed to mount a challenge and wound up finishing third. Restarts have been a thorn in NASCAR’s back for the most part of the season. Both drivers and car owners have questioned the restart zone, and as usual with NASCAR they seemly never have the same playing field race after race. And if Penske questions the restarts, it’s something in the way that NASCAR is dealing with these issues -- or better still not dealing with the way drivers are making restarts a mockery. “I think that last restart, the guy must have closed the window and pulled the blind down,” Penske said. “That’s how bad it was. I think they’ve got to come up with some way to say what’s right or what’s wrong. To me, this is a perfect example of inconsistencies. When you’re racing as tight as we are and everything that is on the line, you just can’t have that kind of officiating.” Kenseth was clearly the guy to beat. His car was a monster, but on that last restart TV replays clearly showed that he jumped. Kenseth said he was focused on getting a quick restart. “I knew for sure I wasn’t going to be late. “Joey and Brad are just so good on restarts. They just launch so good. I don’t know what they do. I wish I did. Of all the restarts I had tonight (Saturday), Joey would typically beat me. When we got that debris caution I knew that I had to have a good pit stop, and I had to have a good restart and get some distance and hold on because our short run wasn’t the strongest part of our car. “I knew it was going to be important to make sure we were clear when we got to Turn 1,” he added. NASCAR will penalize a guy four laps down for speeding on pit road, but for some reason they are rather lenient on restarts. But there’s one thing for certain following Kenseth’s fourth win of the season Saturday night at Richmond: The road to the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup championship goes squarely through Joe Gibbs Racing, which drubbed the entire field Saturday night. JGR has now won seven of the last nine races and 11 overall. “Certainly, right now the company is on a roll,” said Kenseth, who led 352 of the 400-lap race. “They’ve given me some fast cars over the last two months. It’s really cool to come here and do everything right.” Did someone mention restarts? Chase seedings: . First place (three-way tie): Jimmie Johnson, Kyle Busch and Matt Kenseth (2012 points each). . Fourth place: Joey Logano (2009 Points). . Fifth place: (four-way tie): Kevin Harvick, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kurt Busch and Carl Edwards (2006 points each). . Ninth place (three-way tie): Brad Keselowski, Martin Truex Jr., and Denny Hamlin (2003 points each). . 12th place: (five-way tie): Jamie McMurray, Jeff Gordon, Ryan Newman, Paul Menard and Clint Boyer (2000 points each). She loved her return to city life when Jeanette, Jack and Amy lived in Raleigh for eight years. Jeanette was a supportive wife and homemaker, a caring and compassionate mother, a wonderful grandmother, and a loyal and trusted friend. In Loving Memory of my Precious Brother:

Carroll Wayne Ayers 1-20-64 ~ 9-17-11

Brother, I think about you all the time as Corey does too. And wonderful memories you left behind. Your great intentions and precious heart. And know at the end of the day, we are very close and not far apart. Brother, although we are separated through time and space, our souls will connect in another place. You will be there along with Mama, Dad and Robert to guide me in and to comfort me in the end. With your souls progression and high level of spirituality, your goodness and kindness will be my reality. Brother, I saw a vision that was revealed to me. With God’s permission you were soaring with Angels and protected by the almighty hand. This opened up to me an unfamiliar land. Brother the spirit world is a glorious place and I see you filled with joy, love, happiness and grace. Corey misses you so much. He speaks of you often. He says he loves you so much and he’ll remember all the time he had with you. Memories are locked away in my heart and will use what you taught me with grace. Sadly missing you Uncle Carroll Wayne. Crystal Ball at the VA An interesting story played out recently in Philadelphia involving an assistant director, a manager and a psychic. In the past year, the Department of Veterans Affairs office in Philadelphia has been looked at by the Office of the Inspector General for claims processing inaccuracy, manipulating claim dates, canceling pending claims and more. The new story: An assistant director threw a party at her home so a subordinate’s wife could do psychic readings for employees. The subordinate was a manager. Each private reading cost $35, with a minimum of six people. After the assistant director had another subordinate make all the arrangements, three employees agreed to attend the party. An email (that contained the assistant director’s VA position title) went out to solicit the participation of other employees to reach the six-person minimum. Eight employees ended up going. Rule: An employee can’t use her position to endorse a service for friends. The Inspector General got involved and did an

investigation. The assistant director claimed that the attendees were her friends, thereby breaking another rule: Bosses can’t give preferential treatment to subordinates. However, all the subordinates in attendance for a psychic reading complained about how long it was taking, and all left immediately after their reading, not staying to socialize despite the availability of “munchies, wine/beer/vodka.” These were friends? The VAOIG additionally made a criminal referral to the Department of Justice for the manager’s failure to report his wife’s psychic income on his Office of Government Ethics forms for two years running. The VAOIG also discovered a number of fun facts, among them that the manager had failed to claim his psychic wife’s income on his tax returns. The VAOIG helpfully reported that failure to the Internal Revenue Service as well as to the Pennsylvania State Department of Revenue. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

“The Ties That Bind” He was two pounds or so, the lovely bass that I reeled in on Labor Day. He put up a great fight against my little ultra light rod; really a blast. I unhooked him, held him up and admired him for a while, then released him back into the river. My son was in a kayak thirty yards or so upstream from mine, oohing and ahhing over my catch. My father-in-law, I just call him dad, was thirty yards or so downstream doing the same. A three pound bass, at least, he really was nice! We fished on for a while, I snagged a nice little bream, and dad caught a nice bass of his own. It didn’t match mine, which was probably four pounds or so, but it was okay. My son did not catch a thing, and we have been sure to remind him of that for the last couple of days. Finally the ladies signaled that the meat was ready to come off of the grill, so we paddled our way to shore. If you have never been in a kayak, then you may be tempted to think that they are easy and simple to enter and exit. You would be wrong. Dad did not do so well on the entire “exit thing.” He exited, yes, falling completely backwards into the water. Seeing more than six feet and 230 pounds of man do an unplanned Nestea Plunge is an unforgettable sight. Fortunately, chicken and corn and pasta salad have a mollifying effect on injuries and embarrassments. By now I can almost hear the grumblings. “That does it, Martha, when I read a faith column I expect something spiritual, not fish stories and details of a cookout! I am going to dash off an angry letter. In the love of the Lord, of course.” Settle down, please, there is in fact a spiritual point to all of this. There were three

generations of Christians fishing and falling and laughing and eating this past Labor Day. It is my goal, if the Lord tarries His coming, for there one day to be four. You see, we three generations have the purely spiritual to bind us, yes. We are all saved, we are all part of the same church, we all at times read the Bible and pray together. But if those are the only ties that bind us, they will likely prove to be very weak ties. I know some may never have experienced the “utter joy” of being around what I call The Super Saints, but those who have, will be furiously nodding in agreement as they read this. The Super Saints believe that every moment of our lives must be spent in purely spiritual pursuits. I was accosted by a cadre of these while working for my undergraduate degree. They did not believe in vacations, or frivolity, or rest, or humor, or hobbies. “The world is going to hell,” they shouted, “and we must spend every moment reaching them!” But you see, it was God Himself who gave us a day of rest, it was Jesus who told His disciples to come apart and rest for a while, and it was Jesus again who actually told His men to go fishing on more than one occasion. Years have a way of clearing the fog and revealing the truth. My encounter with The Super Saints was some twenty years ago, and my family and I are all still serving faithfully in the ministry to this day. The Super Saints have not fared so well; most have had their families fall apart. I do not rejoice in that; I mourn at the fact that it was not necessary. Do you hear that, parents? It is the sound of a fish calling for you and your kids to come and get it. It probably wont be as nice as my monstrous ten pounder, but still...

Melissa McCarthy gets back on her feet after some flopular turns in less-funny movies like “Tammy.” The laughs in this movie show that she hasn’t hit the edges of what she’s capable of. It’s also another gold star for director Paul Feig, who worked with McCarthy on “Bridesmaids” and has my hopes up for the new “Ghostbusters” movie he’s directing.

Centra Psychiatric Emergency Center A public/private partnership Lynchburg, VA---Centra Mental Health Services is opening a new Psychiatric Emergency Center that has been developed in collaboration with Horizon Behavioral Health and the Lynchburg Police Department. The Center offers a safe, private and therapeutic space, apart from the main emergency room, which is open 24 hours a day. It provides one convenient and accessible location for area citizens experiencing a mental health or substance abuse crisis. The Center is the only one of its kind in the region. Patients experiencing a mental health crisis will be assessed in the Lynchburg General Hospital Emergency Department, have their medical needs treated and then moved with dignity to the Psychiatric Emergency Center. Once there, they will receive timely and appropriate direct care by providers that are trained in treating mental health crises. The Center houses Centra and Horizon clinicians who provide psychiatric assessments, treatment and referral for clients transported to the Center by Lynchburg-Central Virginia’s Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) and others who are voluntarily seeking help. The CIT is composed of specially trained police officers who are able to identify people in mental health crisis and divert them from incarceration into appropriate treatment. CIT is advantageous to all community members because law enforcement officers have more time to tend to other public safety needs. Lynchburg Police Chief Parks Snead said Centra and Horizon Behavioral Health have worked closely to provide better care for mental health patients. “These aren’t criminals, said Snead. “They are people in need of special attention. This emergency center allows patients to receive care from mental health professionals instead of talking to a police officer at 2 a.m. This is a way for us to get the type of help people in crisis need. This is simply the right thing to do.” In addition to the initial assessment, collaborative care is provided by a team of professionals from all three partners and includes psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, licensed clinicians, psychiatric nurses, mental health professionals, CIT trained officers, peer counselors and an intake team. Horizon has received $387,000 in grant funding from the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services to provide CIT services at the Emergency Center, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Last fiscal year, that service was only offered 12 hours a day. “Horizon is thrilled to have the opportunity to collaborate with the LPD and Centra to ensure that underlying issues, such as mental illness and substance abuse, are being addressed to avoid unnecessary incarceration or hospitalization,” says Horizon CEO Damien Cabezas. The Center manages referrals to Horizon Behavioral Health and Centra’s mental health services including the acute inpatient programs for children/adolescents, adults and geriatric patients at Virginia Baptist Hospital, Piedmont Psychiatric Center and Centra’s Addiction & Recovery Services. “Mental illness is highly prevalent and fewer than half of people receive treatment, said Ted Stryker, Vice President of Centra Mental Health Services. “The psychiatric emergency center will remove one more barrier to people getting help.” The center will also use telepsych capabilities to provide mental health evaluations for patients in the Bedford, Farmville and Gretna emergency departments. “We are already using technology to provide these much needed services to outlying areas, and we will continue to do so in the new center,” said Stryker. The new Center was developed partially in response to the Community Health Needs Assessment conducted in 2012, which identified access to mental health care as one of its priorities. The Center is set to open the last quarter of 2015. For more information, please call the Centra Mental Health Intake & Resource Center at 434.200.4444 or Horizon Behavioral Health at 434.477.5000. Information about CIT can be found at: HYPERLINK "http://lynchburg.granicus.com/MediaPlayer. php?publish_id=f70a02eb-1f3d-11e5-b5ce-00219ba2f017" http://lynchburg.granicus. com/MediaPlayer.php?publish_id=f70a02eb-1f3d-11e5-b5ce-00219ba2f017 An open house will be held on Thursday, September 24 from 1-3 pm at the Dillard Building adjacent to Lynchburg General Hospital’s Emergency Department. The formal program/ribbon cutting will begin at 1:30 pm. This event is not open to the public, but the media are invited.

We are working to collect clean, gently used warm coats to support our coat drive program, between now and October 15th at all URW Branches. The process is simple: you drop off your extra coat(s) and URW takes care of the rest. All donated coats will be given to a local agency for distribution to local children in need. If you are a teacher and know of a child in your school that does not have a coat, please let us know. Our goal is that no child will be left out in the cold in the URW Community.

PEEP TALK ! You don’t ever have to worry about anyone ceasing to read the Piedmont Shopper. My uncle, Henry D. Hopkins, is 87 years old & he goes somewhere to get a stack of them each week. He delivers them to the nursing home, and to his friends in his neighborhood. He makes sure everyone gets a copy every week! He and his wife Shirley love to share it and laugh at the jokes and stories. That paper is the heartbeat for a lot of people! My daughter, Ruby, sells Scentsy and she has used your paper for many occasions. She knows that is the one paper that everyone reads! Our church, Central Boulevard Church of God, just used your paper for our Vendor Spring Fling on 4/11/15, and I am sure half or more of the people came because of the Shopper!” -Deborah Severt “I feel our business has grown every year by advertising in the Piedmont Shopper. Judy Bryant is my advertising consultant.”- Bert Sellers Owner • Seller Brothers, Inc. “We moved here over 5 years ago and LOVE your paper. It was our first time selling items through your ads. Thank you so very much for all you do in giving of yourselves to help others. God bless!” Howard and Lynda Richardson

“Thank you for your free service, had a great yard sale.” -Terri Lovell

“You sold a walker for me, thank you!” -C.C. Moore, Danville

“The Piedmont Shopper is the BEST route to go for advertising your business. They’re professional, fun & truly take care of their clients. I use them for ALL of my advertising & will continue to do so.” Tammy Wiles Owner • Perfect Body Fitness Center & Sports Complex “People ask me all the time to advertise in their media and my answer is always no. My reason to them is I spend all my advertising dollars I can with the Piedmont Shopper. We get the most results from them due to their loyal readers and awesome staff. Lesley Tucker took us from a non existent business to a successful well know business in less than a year. Her insightful ad designs pop off the page and have the customers walking through the door. “ Dustin Pierce - Owner - C&D Family Pawn “My experience with Judy Bryant at the Piedmont Shopper: I have worked with Judy for over 7 years and she is always willing to do whatever I ask of her. Sometimes I send an ad in late and she manages to get it in for me. I receive many applicants from my advertisements in the Piedmont Shopperit reaches so many people in our area each week. Thank you, Judy, for your hard work!” Vicky Miller - HR Piney Forest Health & Rehab Center

“I mainly run classifieds in the Piedmont Shopper several times throughout the year. I ALWAYS sell what I’ve listed and sell it FAST! I’m very PLEASED with the Piedmont Shopper and will CONTINUE to use them in the future.” Hubert Inman • Piedmont Shopper Classifieds User • Danville, VA

“The Piedmont Shopper is a GREAT way for us to advertise. All I need is an idea and they take care of the rest. Judy Bryant is the BEST! Her expertise, professionalism and personality make it a pleasure to advertise in the Piedmont Shopper.” Ed Whitlow • Owner Danville Appliance We at Gina’s Family Restaurant LOVE the Piedmont Shopper. Advertising is easy, convenient, price friendly and effective! The new layout is awesome and the coupons have been a great asset to our business! Lesley Tucker always goes ABOVE AND BEYOND to squeeze a last minute ad in for us. She is always friendly and professional. Lesley’s ideas and designs are always exactly what we are looking for. She is hands down our “Go to Girl” for advertising, we absolutely love her! Nikki Fouts • Owner Gina’s Family Restaurant & Nikki’s Family Restaurant

Pumpkin French Toast Ingredients 3/4 cup milk 1/2 cup pumpkin puree 4 eggs 2 Tbsp packed light-brown sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg 1/4 tsp ground ginger 9 slices Texas toast (or other white bread such as Challah or French bread) Butter, for griddle Directions Get a Sausage & Spinach Quiche Recipe. Preheat an electric griddle to 350 degrees (a non-stick skillet set over medium heat also works fine). In a mixing bowl whisk together milk, pumpkin puree, eggs, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger until well combined. Pour into a shallow dish. Butter griddle and dip bread into egg mixture (allowing a few seconds for it to absorb mixture. I also squeeze gently to soak the mixture to center), then rotate and coat opposite side. Transfer to griddle and cook until golden brown on bottom, then lift, butter griddle once more and flip french toast to opposite side and cook until golden brown. Serve warm with butter and maple syrup. Recipe Source: Cooking Classy

Tuberculosis Concerns Put to Rest With Test

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 22, and I am a security guard at a local store. Just recently, I detained a suspect for shoplifting. We were in a room no bigger than a small office, and she was coughing up a storm. I was in and out of the room for a half-hour or so. When the local police department showed up, she revealed that she has active tuberculosis. I did my research, and it is contagious when it’s airborne. How much exposure is necessary to catch it? What are the symptoms of TB? Is it curable? Please, I’m in need of answers. -- E.A.M. ANSWER: Tuberculosis is an infection caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The most common body location is the lungs, but tuberculosis can infect the kidneys, lining of the brain, bones and lining of the heart, among others. It is contagious by air only when in the lungs, as you said. The major symptom is cough, but weight loss also is frequent in advanced stages, giving TB its old name, consumption. The likelihood of getting infected after exposure depends on many factors, including some things we don’t know in this case, such as whether she is being treated and whether she has cavities in her lungs. The good news is that you would be considered a low-risk contact, having been in a room with her only for a relatively short period. The bad news is that it is possible to have acquired an infection. Your doctor or a public health official should evaluate you for evidence of prior infection with a skin test, which should

be repeated in eight to 10 weeks. Tuberculosis is almost 100 percent curable. People with active infection usually are treated with several medications for six months. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife drinks in excess of 3 liters of diet soda a day, sometimes even more. She has colitis, for which she takes Lialda, and on her last visit to her primary care physician, her blood work revealed borderline bad levels in her liver. The doctor seems to think she needs to stop “drinking alcohol,” but I have been married to her for more than 30 years, and I know it’s not drinking that is causing this. We both consume only moderate amounts of alcohol. Could it be the chemicals in diet soda? -- F.J.R. ANSWER: Three liters a day is a lot of diet soda, and that much caffeine probably isn’t good for her. However, I don’t think it is likely to be affecting her liver. Mesalamine (Lialda and others) rarely can cause abnormal liver tests -- specifically, high levels of the same enzymes that might lead a doctor to suspect alcohol use. You didn’t tell me what kind of colitis your wife has, but ulcerative colitis, a form of inflammatory bowel disease, is associated with several kinds of liver problems, including fatty liver and primary sclerosing cholangitis, which is potentially severe. I don’t think either alcohol or diet soda should be blamed until she has had a more careful workup. I think a visit with her gastroenterologist would be wise. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible.
