Robert Luther Gammon
Robert Luther Gammon, 81, of Indianapolis, IN passed a w a y Tuesday August 1 8 t h , 2015. He was born on July 27, 1934 in Danville VA to the late Roy E. Gammon Sr and Essie Gammon Brown. Luther enjoyed Nascar and he was a veteran of the United States Army. Mr Gammon is survived by his loving wife for 60 years, Nora, three sons; Robert S. (Steve), Roger & his wife Sharon, and John (Mike) all of Indianapolis, along with seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Peggy B. Willard, one brother, Charlie K. (Pete) Gammon, both of Danville VA. In addition to this parents,he was predeceased by three brothers; Roy E. (Ree) Gammon Jr., Joe (Jimmy) Gammon, Carl V. Gammon, two sisters Nancy G. Owen, and Martha G. Ozmar. Visitation was held Thursday August 20th, 2015 from 4-8pm at G.H. Herrman Madison Avenue Funeral Home, 5141 Madison Avenue, Indianapolis, IN. His funeral service was conducted on Friday, August 21st at 10am by his son, Roger Gammon. He was laid to rest at Round Hill Cemetery. Edward Wayne Fisher, Sr.
Edward Wayne Fisher, Sr. 73, passed from this life 23 August 2015, at Duke University Medical Center. He was born in Gibson County, TN to the late Wayne and Opal Parsons Fisher. He was preceded in death by his brother, Derrill, and his wife of fifty years, Patricia Curtis Fisher. Dr. Fisher was professor of Biology at Averett University for four decades, and taught classes at Virginia Institute of Marine Science and Humboldt Field

Charles Thomas Newton, age 66 of 105 Wills St., Danville passed a w a y Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at the VA Medical Center in Durham, NC. He was born May 15, 1949 in Danville to Blanche Mays Newton and the late Leo Thomas Newton. Charles was a member of Victory Baptist church. He retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. after 28 years of service. Mr. Newton was a coin collector, loved to buy & sell on E Bay and loved cars. Charles proudly served his country as a member of the US Navy during the Vietnam era. Benjamin Dick “Ben” Emerson, 77, of 1396 C h e s t nut Level L a n e , Blairs, Va. died August 27, 2015 at the Veterans Hospital, Durham, N.C. He was born May 6, 1938 in Rockingham County, N.C. to the late Ruth Hyler Emerson and the late Edward Edgar Emerson. His wife Anna Emerson also preceded him in death on January 1, 2014. Mr. Emerson proudly served his country in the US Navy. He worked in construction for a number of years prior to retiring due to a decline in health. Mr. Emerson is survived by his daughters, Brandy Lee (Tim), Sandra Hudgins (Lenny), Brenda Byrd (Dennis), and Peggy Dove; his son Ronnie Dickens (Brook); his sister Virginia “Sissy” Hensley; nine grandchildren; five greatgrandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; as well as his special fourlegged friend, “Bo.” In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Emerson was predeceased by his son Benjamin Emerson, Jr. and his brother Charlie Emerson. Michael Eugene Perry, 57, formerly of 102 Woodhaven Drive, Danville, Va. passed away Friday, August 28, 2015 at Roman Eagle Rehab and Healthcare Center, where he had been a resi-
dent for the past five years. Mr. Perry was born January 24, 1958 in Fredericksburg, Va. to the late Shirley Reynolds Perry and the late Bob Lee Perry. He was an avid Washington Redskins fan. Mr. Perry was of the Baptist Faith. Debbie Hawker Scarce, 57, of 17613 Old Richm o n d R o a d , Keeling, Va., passed away Saturday, August 29, 2015 at Danville Regional Medical Center, Danville, Va. She was born in Danville, Va. on October 22, 1957 and was the daughter of Frances Redd Hawker and the late Robert Dudley Hawker, Sr. She was a member of Old Mill Primitive Baptist Church and she worked for eight years as an LPN for Green Rock Correctional Facility. Prior to that, she worked for Dr. Pradeep Pradhan. In addition to her mother, Debbie is survived by a daughter, Tiffany Grace Scarce of Chatham, Va.; three sons, Jared Logan Hays of Roanoke, Va., William Travis Hays of Denver, NC and Andrew Devin Hays of Danville; a sister, Robin Pruitt of Danville; two brothers, Glen Hawker of Blairs, Va. and Robert D. Hawker, Jr. of Charlotte, NC. In addition, she is survived by a niece, Kelley Ellington of Richmond, Va. and her best friend, Patricia Wiles of Sutherlin, Va. Ethel Mary Dowdy Williams
Ethel Mary Dowdy Williams was born May 22, 1925, to the late Fletcher and Lessie Turrentine Dowdy. She was c a l l e d home by our Heavenly Father on Monday morning at 7:00 AM with her family at her bedside. Ethel was married to the late L. C. Williams. She was the mother of the late James Lee Toomer. Ethel was a virtuous woman. She was very loving and dedicated to serving God. She was a member of Clover Apostolic Holiness Church and she attended faithfully until her health failed her. There she served on the Pastor’s Aide Committee, Kitchen Committee, and served as a Sunday School Teacher. Her favorite song was “Don’t Worry Bout Me.” And her favorite scripture was Psalm 91 and she loved to say “I know the man, you’ve got to know the man for yourself.” Ethel was the last of her generation, but she leaves to cherish a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, September 5, 2015 at Norris Funeral Services, West End Chapel officiated by Rev. Jermaine Parker. Lambert of 339 H a m p ton Drive died in her home on Tuesday, August 25, 2015 after experiencing declining health for a num-
ber of months. She was born in Fort Valley,
Georgia on September 19, 1924, a daughter of the late Alton Hartley and Eva Mae Jones Hartley. Mrs. Lambert was married to the late Henry Lambert who died in 1997. She was secretary at People’s Auto Supply, West Main Baptist Church and Coca Cola Bottling Company. Mrs. Lambert attended school in Rome, GA and graduated from Carrol Lynn Business College. She had served as secretary/president of the Danville Civitan Club from 1988 to 1990. Mrs. Lambert was member of the Garden Club and a dedicated volunteer at Schoolfield Elementary School. She was a faithful member of West Main Baptist Church since 1958. Besides her parents and husband she was predeceased by a sister, Betty Jane Austin. Mrs. Lambert is survived by two daughters; Nancy Davis (Carlton) of Garden City, SC and Melodie Williams (W.H.) of Danville. Also surviving are five grandchildren; Kim Hensley (Harold), Alex Houston (Katherine), Wendy Price (David), Shannon Baker (Kent) and Susan Kline (Bob) and eight great-grandchildren. A special thanks to care givers Vivian Watkins, Kenisha Hubbard, Denise Wells, and Gloria James for their loving care and support during her illness. Thanks also to the nurses and staff of Commonwealth Home Nursing and Hospice Staff for their guidance and concern. Martin Nuckols passed away in her home on August 26, 2015, of natural causes. She was born in West Virginia, a daughter of the late Alvah and Geneva Martin and was a beloved mother, sister, and teacher. She is survived by her daughter Andrea and her husband R. Bud Harris of Lynchburg, VA; her son Bryan Nuckols and his wife Kate of Dallas, TX; her sister Marsha and her husband C. Bruce Williams of Wilmington, NC; and her former husband Ralph Nuckols of Greensboro, NC. Pat graduated from Big Creek High School in 1968 attended college at Bluefield College and then graduated from Averett College with a Bachelor’s Degree in 1972. She taught for 30 years in Pittsylvania County schools, including Union Hall El-
ementary, Mt. Hermon Elementary, Central Middle, and Tunstall Middle. Throughout her career, Pat sponsored and taught many student activities including Beta Club, Drama Club, Piedmont Regional Summer Governors School, Gifted and Talented Classes, and tutored many students. She was awarded Teacher of the year in 1994 and was recognized for being Virginia State Beta Sponsor from 1997-1999. Pat retired in 2010 and has since enjoyed reading, spending time with family, traveling, and volunteering. She also loved children and animals. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 2nd from 6 to 7 pm at Townes Funeral Home. A memorial service will also be held at Townes Funeral Home, on Thursday, September 3rd at 2pm. Raymond Hodge Mann, Jr.
Raymond Hodge Mann Jr. passed away on August 28, 2015 in Danville. He was born on May 27, 1937 to the late Raymond H o d g e Deuteronomy Mann Sr. and Dymple Marie Lewis Mann. He grew up in Danville and graduated from George Washington High School in 1955. Mr. Mann worked at his father’s grocery store, Mann’s Grocery before going to the University of Virginia where he majored in geology. After college Mr. Mann moved back to Danville until 1967 when he moved to Williamsburg, VA where he worked at The College of William and Mary until his retirement in 1994. After retiring Mr. Mann returned to Danville where he lived in his childhood home, 129 Girard Street and in 2000 he moved to 403 Girard Street and lived there until his death. Mr. Mann was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He will be deeply missed by his lifelong friend Harry Smith. A graveside funeral service will be held on Monday, August 31, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Highland Burial Park with Reverend Jeffrey Wright officiating. Harold Malloy Reynolds
Harold Malloy Reynolds, 82, returned home to his Father in Heaven early Monday morning, August 31, 2015, following a recent battle with cancer. He leaves his wife of 62 years, Edith, three children, Donnie Reynolds (Debbie) of Winston-Salem, NC, Terry Reynolds (Cheryl) of Danville, VA, and Toni Bridges (Richard) of Stoneville, NC. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Amber Sykes (Kenny) of Richmond, VA, Brandon Reynolds (Mande) of Garner, NC, Devyn Bayes of Emory, VA, and Bryce Reynolds of Danville, VA. He has two great-grandchildren, Ellie and Luke Sykes, and one more on the way. He also has numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Rosa
and John Reynolds, two sisters Mamie Harris and Laura Dowdy, and three brothers, James, Richard, and John. He was born in Caswell County, North Carolina, but spent most of his life in Danville, VA with his beloved wife and family. In 1998, he retired from Dan River Mills after a long career in the instrument shop. Harold proudly served his country from 1953-1955 in the United States Army as a Military Policeman. His status as a veteran defined much of his retirement age as he was an active member of American Legion Post 1097, where he took great pride in serving as Honor Guard Captain. Harold was honored there as the Honor Guard Member of the Year in 2002 and Legionnaire of the Year for 2006. Finally, he received the honor of being the Grand Marshall at the Danville Veteran’s Day Parade in 2013. Upon his wishes, a graveside service will be held at Danville Memorial Gardens on Wednesday, September 2nd at 4pm. Military honors will be conducted. A visitation will precede the graveside service at Townes Funeral Home starting at 2:30pm. At other times the family will receive friends at the home.
Donna Kaye Watson Adams
Donna Kaye Watson Adams, 57, of 460 Adams Trail, Keeling, VA, passed away on August 31, 2015 at Danville Regional Medical Center. She was born on May 23, 1958 in Danville to Elmer and Patsy Watson who survive of Sutherlin, VA. On March 24, 1989 she married Charles “Tommy” Adams who survives of the home, and they were happily married for 26 years. Mrs. Adams was employed by Watson Equipment Sales until the business closed. In addition to her husband and parents she is survived by a daughter, Jacqueline Arnold and husband Mike, a grandson Jeremy Falls, a niece Jillian Jones, and her dogs Sam and Luna. She was predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law Wanda and Johnny Jones and her best friend and pet Brutis. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 3, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Arbor Baptist Church with the Reverend Jerry Flanagan and Reverend Larry Davis officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Arbor Baptist Church and at other times will be at the residence, 460 Adams Trail, Keeling, VA. Born April 15, 1949 in Pittsylvania County, VA, he was the son of the late Silas Calloway, Sr. and the late Vernell Glass Calloway. He was married to Terresia Guy Calloway, who survives. was the daughter of the late Roy and Elizabeth Powell Wilson. She was married to Helbert White. She was the last survivor of her generation. Survivors include a devoted guardian niece, Annette Oliver of Yanceyville, NC and a host of grandchildren, other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a daughter, Elizabeth Jeffress; two sisters, Nettie Williams and Emma Ingram; four brothers, St. Clair Wilson, Charlie Wilson, Ottoway Wilson and Robert Wilson. Virginia Ellen Law-Belcher, 100, of Cascade, Virginia, passed away Saturday, August 29, 2015. Born April 11, 1915 to George Cooper Law and Willie Mae Campbell-Law in Franklin County, Virginia. She was married to Charlie Howell Belcher, who predeceased her in October 1962. She lived most of her life in Franklin County before relocating to Roanoke, VA. She worked as a seamstress for Made Best Uniforms in Salem, VA, before her retirement. After her retirement she moved to Cascade where she made her home until her death. Thomas Gainewell Wells
Thomas Gainewell Wells, 88, of 159 Capri Ct., Danville, VA, died Sunday, August 30, 2015 at Riverside Health and Rehabilitation Center where he had been a resident for the past few years. He had been in declining health for the past three months. Mr. Wells was born in Bassett, VA on September 2, 1926 to the late Louis Woodson Wells and Princess Wilson Wells Evans. He lived most of his life in Danville, VA where he worked for thirty-three years as the produce manager for A&P Grocery. He also worked for thirteen years at Eddies Supermarket in Chatham, VA. Mr. Wells served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II during which he served on a destroyer in the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans. He was a member of the Fairview United Methodist Church where he served as Captain of the Ushers, served on the Church Board, and served on the Pastor Parrish Committee. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing. On December 4, 1948 he married Mildred Horsley Wells, who passed away on February 24, 2007. Mr. Wells is survived by a daughter, Linda Fitzgerald, and husband Gary, of Danville, VA; and a grandson, Chase Fitzgerald, and wife Kelly, also of Danville. In addition to his wife and parents he was predeceased by two sisters, Virginia Wells Horsley Collins and Sadie Wells Ferrell. A Funeral Service will be
