WELCOME TO THE FAMILY
THE PRAT T HOMES LEGACY
by
Todd Palmer
Pratt Homes is a legacy business that has been building homes of all shapes and sizes for everyone no matter what stage of the family life cycle they're in: from childhood to retirement years. The family's tradition of building in Barrie, Ontario started in 1890, and has continued for six generations.
Don Pratt is a Barrie boy, born and raised.
Barrie, Ontario is a thriving real estate market located 45 minutes north of Toronto. Much like the previous generations of his family, Don spent the majority of his life in construction in the Barrie area then passed the family building legacy on to his daughter Karen Pratt-Hansen and son-in law Heljar Hansen.
Don recounts a grade school memory of
being surrounded by peers as his teacher asked questions about career dreams. As the teacher went through the questions, Don didn’t raise his hand. The teacher asked him directly, “What do you want to do, Don?” He simply responded, “I want to build homes.”
The Pratt family has been building homes
in Barrie since 1890 but the company namesake Pratt Homes was founded by Don in the early 1970s. At the heart of the company is building attractive and affordable homes to help people achieve homeownership.

Coffee COCKTAILS by
Tamara Rossignol | photos Scott Cooper
Reaching for caffeine has slowly transitioned from a morning ritual to an adaptable solution for an afternoon pick-me-up, social excuse, and beverage experience worth perfecting. Many trends have come and gone when it comes to the classic 'hot cup of joe' but the following timeless tweaks to regular java are sure to be sticking around.
Maintaining traditional flavours is at the
heart of any coffee trend and nitrogen cold brew coffee is hitting its mark. With rising popularity, nitro cold brew is becoming the new summer go-to perk-up beverage and is available locally at Ashanti Coffee in Collingwood during the summer months. Infused with tasteless nitrogen gas, this iced coffee alternative is poured from a tapped keg creating the appearance of a Guinnessstyle stout with the creamy smoothness of a full fat cappucino, sans guilt.

COMFORTABLE LUXURY
A Guide to Luxe Living Decor
Home is the ultimate place to unwind, relax, and enjoy the company of family and friends. If you’re in the mood to add some style to your interior, local designer Caroline Harrison has compiled five well-loved luxe décor items to bring opulence to your home.
#1 Fine Bed Linens Irresistibly soft and cozy bed linens are a must in comfortable luxury. For the finest bed linens, we love to source from Restoration Hardware, Au Lit Fine Linens, and Elte. Blends with 100 per cent pure Egyptian cotton will offer the most quality of the extra-long fibers, offering strength, durability, and a soft hand. Feeling extra lavish? Opt for cashmere throws and pillows. For a subtle pattern and simple elegance, a Hermes blanket is the perfect stylish addition to the end of your bed.
#2 Tranquil Scents Introduce lavish scents into your home with linen spray, candles, and diffusers. With scents like Wood Sage and Sea Salt, you can’t go wrong with a Jo Malone candle. If room spray is more your style, take a peek at Diptyque’s woodsy and elegant Ambre room spray. We also love natural aromatherapy: check out Saje’s collections of essential oil blends. When placed in a diffuser, your home will fill with the delicately scented vapours – perfect for a busy home or those with young children or pets, as you can easily leave diffusers unattended
#3 Biophilic Décor Refresh your home with vibrant greenery. Your local greenhouse or florist will be able to help you select the perfect plant or tree. If you don’t have a green thumb, there are fabulous faux options for you, including the Grand Faux Cavendish Banana Tree from Restoration Hardware or the Fiddle Leaf Tree from Elte. Revive your study area or powder room with a gathering of succulents – add river rocks or decorative pebbles to the top of the soil to finish the look.
#4 Natural Fiber Rugs Walk on a cloud with hand knotted or woven rugs made from natural fibers such as silk, wool, and alpaca fleece. These plush and silky-soft rugs will feel like heaven under your feet while also grounding and defining your space. Weavers Art and Elte are our go-to suppliers for upscale area rugs. These luxury rugs have a higher initial cost but are worth the investment: these pieces will become an heirloom.
#5 Coffee Table Books Kick your feet up and snuggle into your sectional or favourite comfy chair: coffee table books are the ultimate key to divine relaxation or a great conversation piece. Whether you wish to read about your most adored public figures, explore the most fabulous places to travel, or imagine life as a sommelier – check out your favourite art gallery gift shop, Assouline, and other online bookstores. Filled with stunning photography and informative script, you’ll be cozied up and unwinding for hours.

Madison Taylor utilizes a combi-
nation of architecture and engineering and then takes it a step further by adding interior design to create a truly collaborative concept that allows the form of a building to be dictated by its required function. Madison, the founder of Madison Taylor, now ensures that all designs conceptualized and implemented at the studio are created from the inside out so that all the functions and requirements of the building or home are met while the structure takes form.
When you enter the studios of
Madison Taylor, you can instantly see the welcoming combination of practicality and modern grit that have now become the MT trademark.
A style that can only be achieved
through the direct experience of being a business woman, a wife and a mother. The firm follows suit by creating both commercial and residential designs that are inspired by function, practicality and a simple, streamlined edge that makes every design unique in its own right.
But why are builders, developers,
home-owners, small businesses, hotels and restaurants flocking to work with Madison Taylor? The world-class designs certainly help, but the real reason lies within the firms combined experience in hospitality design, construction management, and both commercial and residential architecture.
PIE DIGEST 113
114 PIE DIGEST
This experience has allowed Mad-
ison Taylor to develop a complete design system that integrates interior design and architecture into one service followed by a construction drawing package that is so detailed that it removes all assumptions from the construction process, creating projects that can be easily tendered and easily managed.
One of Madison Taylor’s preferred
custom home builders has said it the best, “I don’t understand why anybody building a home wouldn’t have Madison Taylor create an integrated design package. I didn’t need to be on site as often, my build was completed 30% quicker and because everything from grout, windows, faucets and shingles were specified by make, model, colour and price, it was near impossible NOT to come in on budget. And everybody loves Madison’s designs.”
PIE DIGEST 115
116 PIE DIGEST
What is the natural progression of
a design firm? Along with a team of current architectural technologists, Madison Taylor has recently partnered with architect Erin Hoffman to create the architecture firm, Hoffman Taylor, a division now poised to take on larger commercial projects and making Madison Taylor one of the few interior design firms in the region with the ability to collaborate and integrate design and architecture without having to leave the office.
Through a synchronized design approach, The Madison Taylor team looks to the future and embraces entrepreneurship, social consciousness, new technologies and how can we forget; the decision making process of a fighter pilot.

CREATING REMARKABLE COMMUNITIES By David Silverberg
Gas-fired lanterns. A pumpkin patch. A Christmas tree farm. A baseball diamond encircled by corn stalks à la Field of Dreams. These idyllic features complement the farmhouse-style homes that make up the Braestone estate community, two hours north of the GTA in Horseshoe Valley. Developed by multi-faceted company Georgian International, the 229 homes sit on 556 acres in the Oro-Medonte township where these ingredients, known as “remarkables”, further entice prospective buyers. Bringing a unique approach to Ontario real estate is a hallmark of the company’s mission. “What we’re doing is not what other developers are doing,” says Mike Parker, Vice President, Sales & Marketing for Georgian International’s Real Estate Division. “In the planning process, we came up with community features that will enhance people’s lives, which will be part of their active lifestyles.” Besides successful sales, Braestone’s eyecatching offerings and impressive amenities are getting noticed by the industry. It was recognized as Best New Home Community of the Year in 2016 by the Canadian Home Builders Association, and its Discovery Centre (aka sales HQ) was named 2016 Best Low Rise Homes Sales Office in Canada by the CHBA. But Braestone is not the only development Georgian International is known for in Ontario. Windfall is a 609-home project at the base of Blue Mountain, which attracts buyers who want “comfort, character, culture and community with a relaxed way of life,” says Parker.
He notes that, “it’s a place where nature and neighbourhood are in perfect balance… with community trails, Georgian Bay on one side, and the Niagara Escarpment on the other the beauty of the natural landscape is simply amazing.” Plans are also underway to release the first units of the highly-anticipated Mountain House, adjacent to Windfall. The 230-unit Mountain House will be built in two-, three-, and four-story buildings. The terrace suites will boast a chaletstyle and be complemented by a community building, a bike repair station, a sauna and relaxation room, hot and cold pools and an picturesque setting. “We will be releasing our initial units this year and, like all our projects, the standard features, such as full, glass-walled showers and exterior gas lanterns, go above and beyond expectations,” says Parker. With Toronto home prices skyrocketing and other communities such as Hamilton seeing similar jumps, you can imagine why some Ontarians might look at living in pastoral communities such as Georgian Bay or Oro-Medonte. To be closer to nature, and farther from the concrete jungles of metro cities, can harken us back to a simpler time. And for a company like Georgian International, they want to give people that sense of a home ensconced among mountains, lakes, Christmas tree parks, skating ponds. And if that isn’t being Canadian at its most grassroots, we don’t know what is.
