E M POWE R ING B E L E N T HROUGH NE TWO R KE D INFR AST R UC TURE EXPANDING THE RHIZOME

For a long time native communities have been living in sparse, often isolated, settlements. Adapting to the mutable conditions of the river, they created a system based on mobility, economic diversification and ‘multisited territorial appropriation’. Such use and production of space was and still is disarticulated from any single master principle of spatial organization and from usual dichotomies such as rural/urban and public/private. The lower area of Belen has been considered high risk and not suitable for urban development, which is why this settlement has been labeled as marginal, and their population has been classified as poor. This classification of urban poverty and marginality is based on traditional measurement methodologies and development discourses, which rarely take into account the environmental and socio-cultural context of non-traditional communities like those located in the Amazonia. The relocation site of New Belen is located at the edge of the future expansion of the city of Iquitos, next to the conservation area of Allpahuayo-Mishana, and approximately 25 kilometers from the current site. The choice of the new site location was driven by factors related to land value and cost, ownership and size. The land was privately owned and sold to the government for that purpose. It is surrounded by the rainforest, relatively isolated from other settlements, and has poorly involved the local community. With this project I will explore and empower the existing Belen network by using the Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) design method resulting in new opportunities for remain in place.

RIVER MOVEMENT AND CITY EVOLUTION The Amazon River is traditionally known as “The water snake”, due to the way it moves. In this sense, its meaning comes to life. That is, the river is a living being and its presence is very important to the collective imagination of the rainforest populations. Amazonian towns express in their oral traditions the importance and duality between forest and river, thus showing the close interdependence of their asymmetric elements. If this ancestral knowledge that reflects the flooding and dry seasons is considered, the importance of the forest´s seasonal flooding would be understood. Thanks to this phenomenon, fluvial systems are originated. Moreover, it is the main mechanism

that

changes in the Amazonian environment, as well as the development of aquatic and terrestrial organisms intrinsic to the area.

AMAZONIA

IQUITOS

In the rainforest, the river and its serpentine movement has always been the most important linking element of

Through the connections that occur naturally through the river to supply the population’s daily needs, the system extends to the city creating new permanent and complementary nodes for existing networks.

the Amazonian reality. Through it life flows, food comes, and hunters and merchants navigate. This vehicle has enabled exchange, and has favored the creation of small cities in the dense forest.

NANAY RIVER

IQUITOS

The development of human culture in the Amazonian territory originated from their productive management, in which they recognized the diversity of species, and recorded the climate and seasonal cycles of the river in the surroundings.

PADRE COCHA

In this way, an internal and hierarchical network is created so that the productive and commercial system works at different levels inside and outside the city.

BELLAVISTA MANACAMIRI

ITAYA RIVER

The understanding of the cyclic dynamics in constant movement of the rainforest territory pushed its dwellers not to have a fixed place of residence but stationary occupations as they searched for resources and productive land.

This is where the network system behaves like a “rhizome”, a descriptive model in which the organization of the elements does not follow lines of hierarchical subordination, giving rise to multiple branches, in which any element can affect or influence any other to improve it.

BELEN NETWORK EXPANDING THE RHIZOME

VIEW PLATFORM / MIRADOR

Considering the existing Belen network as the rhizome, all the nodes make the structure better at the same time. Every network is part of a bigger system of nodes and connections that resist chronology and organization, instead favoring a nomadic system of growth and propagation.

- Strategic viewpoints with the natural environment and Belen area.

If we think about the rhizome as a map, it could be something that is always open and can be interveined in any point. Moreover, we can also say that it doesn’t need a start and end point, because everything is happening in the middle, between things. There is no logical pattern for its growth or central route.

- Walkability - Make the experience of the river more attractive. - Pedestrian and cyclist friendly area is created. - Green atmosphere gives the city a different look. - Increase the value of real estate activating the edge of the river.

The rhizome can be broken off at any point and will start over again with new connections making a resilient network or system.

- Buildings’ plinth contribute to the activity of the public space. - Cultural, commercial and leisure activities make the street the place to be, giving the feeling of a safe space.

PERMANENT INFRASTRUCTURE

- Upgrade existing infrastructure making them part of the daily street life and adaptable for dry and wet season. - Reinforce Belenials unique character by making it permanent.

NEW ROUTES

- Complete the network for pedestrians with secondary access to/from the nodes. (River level and formal streets level) - Activate new areas. - As a flexible structure, users can experience different type of activities along the corridor. - Creation of a new public corridor that integrates other areas of Belen. - People closer to the water level, especially in these areas where they can be expected to make use of the public space.

GAL APAGO S ISL AND S TOURISM AND CONSERVATION

Mapping the Galapagos extends design research into the real of geography and critical cartography. Maps and the act of mapmaking are understood as spatial representations of geo-spacial conccerns as well as an exercise in design as an extra large scale enterprise. The maps that were created describe aspects of the galapagos pertinent to tourism and conservation. The studio project address interventions and proposals at differing territorial scales, which include the entire territory of the Galapagos Islands and surrounding marine environment. The Galapagos Islands possess an extraordinary range of ecological, environmental, geological, oceanographic, social, and infrastructural elements that were expressed visually through maps.

REACTIVATION OF THE CENTRAL STATE HOSPITAL Analysis of the former Central State Hospital in Milledgeville, Georgia. Design a plan that will re-activate and re-connect the site to the town center of Milledgeville. Assess the potential for the site based on historic and current survey information. Historic resources used- Sanborn maps, images and information from a site visit. To understand the potential for the site, a diachronic survey was undertaken. This gave an understanding of the development of the city of Milledgeville and the subject site. The master plan focuses on reinvigorating the southern, former hospital campus, section of Milledgeville and aims to provide a resilient part of the city that can connect to the historic downtown: a focus on a new educational/college facility, a mixture of single dwelling housing and multi-family blocks, adaptive preservation of some of the historic buildings within the campus to integrate in to the new educational facilities, and newly constructed road to connect to highways running to the east and west of Milledgeville.

- Milledgeville is a city located 30 miles to the northeast of Macon. - Formerly the Capital of Georgia (1804-1868) until after the American Civil War. - The new planned town, modeled after Savannah and Washington, D.C., stood on the edge of the frontier, where the Upper Coastal Plain gives rise to the foothills and plateau of the Piedmont.

RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS DIACHRONIC SURVEY

The diachronic survey focused on the development of the town of Milledgeville from its inception in 1804 with the four public spaces, and how these are used currently. This understanding of how the urban pattern developed is important in understanding how the subject site developed alongside the town.

The development of the town grid and subsequent road network in Milledgeville was considered important as it illustrated a disconnect, both intentional and unintentional where a creek divided the town to the north and the south. RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS DIACHRONIC SURVEY

The Synchronic survey documented five aspects of Milledgeville: - Through analysis of Google maps, GIS data and plans from a field trip to Milledgeville the existing building footprints and green spaces were detailed. - A traffic hierarchy is represented, including the road network, railroads and water traffic. - Existing land uses were illustrated to outline the current pattern of land uses in the town. - A figure ground diagram was developed to understand the density across the town center and the subject site at the CSH. - Following a meeting with the town planning department a zoning diagram was produced.

SAVANNAH

HISTORIC EVOLUTION AND URBAN FORM This studio introduces to urban design concepts, strategies and representational tools through design research, documentation, analysis and projects based in the city of Savannah. Commencing with research and analysis to the historic district and its present situation in the 21st century, the project engaged with a range of issues central to the study and practice of urban design. The project will address the physical structure of Savannah’s historic district and its immediate surrounds, as well as human and experiential factors that are not easily understood using conventional maps and plans. In addition, it explores the city’s continuing ability to accommodate and adapt to a diverse mix of buildings, uses, public spaces, and infrastructures while considering the related concept of “urban design by adaptive reuse.” The project also focus attention at the street level to gain an understanding of how these essential urban elements effect the everyday world.

SAVANNAH HISTORIC EVOLUTION AND URBAN LAYERS SAVANNAH, GA

Portions of Savannah’s urban fabric have undergone radical, seemingly irreversible transformations during the twentieth century, and, as in all built environments, the continuity of change is inevitable, sometimes slow and subtle but often cataclysmic and dramatic. Nonetheless, the essential urban structure (the streets and open spaces) of the historic district remains intact. the structure has proven resilent and adaptable over the course of nearly three centuries, as buildings come and go, new

districts and uses emerge, and popular uses of public spaces shift and evolve. The historic development and transformation of the city, from 1733 through the present, was analized and representerd through maps, plans and views of the city. The goal was to capture and visualiza essential information about the city’s form and structure. Various levels of abstraction and reduction are to be used to achieve drawings that speak to the complexity of the urban fabric.

SAVANNAH URBAN TYPOLOGIES STREETS & SQUARES, BUILDINGS & BLOCKS SAVANNAH, GA JASPER WARD - MADISON SQUARE This assigment focuses on visual interpretation of essential urban elements - the streets and squares, buildings and blocks which could be considered irreducible parts of the city. students are asked to explore an Oglothorpe ward in comprenhensive detail and describe its built environment. In our understanding of how streets and squares together establish the public realm of the ward, of how buildings and blocks create the architectural fabric, what can be observe about about the relationships between these elements? Are there additional urban elements that bring architecture, infraestructure and open spaces into an interrelated whole?

M IX USE _HO USING BACHELOR´S DEGREE THESIS PROJECT

In response to the lack of order, chaos and informality, which is born spontaneously a high density metropolitan area of commerce such as the Gamarra area in the district of La Victoria (Lima, Peru), is that this thesis seeks to support the development of an architectural project of Housing- Workshop and services, in order to strengthen the relationships that currently exist in the place between its inhabitants and the dynamics that occur in the place. The main objective of the project is to satisfy and improve the living conditions of those living in the workplace, as is the case of the vast majority of emerging merchants of Gamarra. In this way, the architectural project seeks to be a complement to what already happens in the place, satisfying infrastructure needs and lack of local equipment dedicated to cultural, commercial, and diffusion activities at the metropolitan level.
