Piermarq is proud to present New Paintings from South West Tasmania, a solo exhibition of new works by prominent landscape painter Geoff Dyer. Renowned for his brooding, atmospheric canvases, Dyer’s art is infused by the power and majesty of the natural world. His latest body of work is inspired by the rugged Tasmanian landscape that Dyer, and six generations before him, have called home. Geoff Dyer revisits Ocean Beach, a strip of wild coastline that he describes as “a muse for the ever vulnerable.” He also visits unfamiliar landscapes, such as Strathgordon and Lake Pedder, set deep within the Tasmanian wilderness. Dyer’s Rock face, Strathgordon series are a new direction for the artist. His bold gestural mark-making lends itself to capturing the lush, mossy hillside and the texture of the eroding cliff faces. The influence of J.M.W Turner is ever-present in Geoff Dyer’s oils. With an eye for vivid colour and a concern for light, he skilfully evokes the the heady purples and rich, golden light of dusk. New Paintings from South West Tasmania is an impressive body of work that takes us on an intimate journey through the wilds of the island state. New Paintings from South West Tasmania opens on Thursday 8 June 2017, 6 - 8pm, and runs until Saturday 24 June 2017.
GEOFF DYER Geoff Dyer (b. 1947) has forged a career spanning five decades as one of Australia’s most respected landscape painters. He came to fame in 2003 winning the Archibald Prize with his portrait of Tasmanian environmentalist and author Richard Flanagan. Despite this achievement in a portrait prize, Dyer predominantly explores the landscape in his paintings. Dyer's expressive landscapes reflect Tasmania's unique environment and have become an important part of the cultural landscape of the island state. Geoff Dyer's art is infused by the power and majesty of the natural world. Dyer works from photographs and memory, sculpting the movement of the landscape with a palette knife and blending with a large brush. His landscapes encapsulate an abstraction that is achieved through the physicality of his painting style. His art practice places emphasis on the treatment of the medium as the subject matter itself - ultimately achieving powerful and dynamic compositions. Geoff Dyer consistently exhibits in Australia and Asia, with demand proving an appetite for his work not limited to the domestic market. With a lengthy CV featuring inclusion as regular finalist in both the prestigious Archibald and Wynne Prizes, Geoff Dyer presents as highly collectible toward the coming decade, given his profile and the academic reference to his work.
