Hayden Jackson, Flux #8 (2017), Acrylic & enamel on canvas, 150 x 135cm
FLUX HAYDEN JACKSON 17 AUGUST - 2 SEPTEMBER 2017
FLUX HAYDEN JACKSON Opening Night: Thursday 17 August 2017, 6 - 8pm 17 August - 2 September 2017, Tue-Sat 10am-5pm 76 Paddington St Paddington NSW 2021 RSVP 02 9660 7799 or via Eventbrite Flux is Hayden Jackson’s first solo exhibition with Piermarq in Paddington. Jackson is an emerging practice-based artist and his canvases are an exploration of materiality; of paint in motion. Jackson uses litres of acrylic and enamel to create loosely painted portraits of immense presence and power. Across such a large surface Jackson is able to manipulate the movement of the paint; tilting and manoeuvring the large stretchers physically to convey line and depth. However, the manipulation of paint is never more than partially controlled, as the mark making instrument is not a brush, but gravity, chance and judgement. Through this process the elements of order and flux are brought into balance. Regarding thematic concerns, of particular interest to Jackson are discourses of gender. His paintings are a meditation on the expectations and stereotypes around masculinity, that are at once overtly and covertly part of the culture that surrounds us. In material form Jackson’s work reflects the shifting sands of gender that have been at play in the past half century and will continue for the future. This is achieved through subtle changes in materiality, movement and contradictions on the canvas; contrasting cool pastels with dominating colours to achieve a counter reaction of subject matter and aesthetic. Flux is a powerful body of work by a strong emerging artist who has already seen his works taken up with vigour by savvy collectors interested in the forefront of new material forms. Flux opens on Thursday 17 August 2017, and runs until Saturday 2 September 2017.
HAYDEN JACKSON Hayden Jackson (b.1991) is an emerging artist living and working in the town of Seaspray, on the south-eastern coast of Victoria, Australia. Jackson uses litres of acrylic and enamel paint to create loosely painted portraits of immense presence and power. Across such a large surface Jackson is able to manipulate and control the movement of the paint, tilting and manoeuvring the large stretchers physically to convey line and depth. Hayden Jackson was the recent winner of the Richard (Dick) Bishop Emerging Art Prize at the Latrobe Regional Gallery. Part of his award Jackson was able to utilise one of the Morwell Galleries to present a selection of new work titled Politics of Paint. "The objective of my art is to explore the qualities of paint and its versatility as a medium. I aim to create a world within a world, to expose the viewer to a large array of pastel colours and bleeding varnishes. The paintings are highly reective of light. I want the viewer to be lost in the size and depth of the heavily layered works, the layering of paints and varnish will display 3 dimensionally on the 2 dimensional canvases. Through viewing the works the audience should feel somewhat engulfed by a sensory overload of colour. Artist Hayden jackson in the studio
