OUT OF LINE HAYDEN JACKSON & JACOB SPOKES 28 MARCH - 14 APRIL 2018
OUT OF LINE HAYDEN JACKSON & JACOB SPOKES PREVIEW CATALOGUE Opening Night: Wednesday 28 March 2018, 6 - 8pm 28 March - 14 April 2018, Tue-Sat 10am-5pm 76 Paddington St Paddington NSW 2021 RSVP 02 9660 7799 Piermarq is proud to present Out Of Line, an exhibition of new work by two up-and-coming abstract artists – Hayden Jackson & Jacob Spokes. Hayden Jackson is an emerging practice-based artist and his canvases are an exploration of materiality; of paint in motion. Jackson uses litres of acrylic and enamel to create loosely painted portraits of immense presence and power. Across such a large surface Jackson is able to manipulate the movement of the paint; tilting and manoeuvring the large stretchers physically to convey line and depth. However, the manipulation of paint is never more than partially controlled, as the mark making instrument is not a brush, but gravity, chance and judgement. Through this process the elements of order and flux are brought into balance. Jacob Spokes’ vivid abstract paintings are an emotive and conceptual response to landscape and place, inspired by the contrast of built and unbuilt environment that forms the city of Sydney. His paintings are a product of a layered serendipitous process, whereby the landscapes reveal themselves overtime through layers of colour and form. Spokes’ on the paintings featured in Out Of Line; “In making these works I had the idea that I wanted to keep it open for interpretation; whether the viewer notices a literal or emotive facet to my works is up to them. I like the idea of not telling people what to see or look at, but have them create their own narratives for the work.” With While divergent in conceptual focus, the works of Hayden Jackson and Jacob Spokes are united in explorations of process, markmaking, and colour. Out Of Line is a vibrant, dynamic and energetic exhibition by two strong emerging artists on the rise. Out Of Line opens on Wednesday 28 March, 6 - 8pm and continuing until Saturday 14 April 2018.
HAYDEN JACKSON Hayden Jackson (b.1991) is an emerging artist living and working in the town of Seaspray, on the south-eastern coast of Victoria, Australia. Jackson uses litres of acrylic and enamel paint to create loosely painted portraits of immense presence and power. Across such a large surface Jackson is able to manipulate and control the movement of the paint, tilting and manoeuvring the large stretchers physically to convey line and depth. Hayden Jackson on his work;
 "The objective of my art is to explore the qualities of paint and its versatility as a medium. I aim to create a world within a world, to expose the viewer to a large array of pastel colours and bleeding varnishes. The paintings are highly reective of light. I want the viewer to be lost in the size and depth of the heavily layered works, the layering of paints and varnish will display 3 dimensionally on the 2 dimensional canvases. Through viewing the works the audience should feel somewhat engulfed by a sensory overload of colour."

JACOB SPOKES Jacob Spokes (b. 1994) is an emerging artist living and working in Sydney's inner west. In 2014, Spokes completed a Diploma of Fine Art St George College of Fine Art, Kogarah, with a focus on painting. Spokes' vivid abstract paintings are an emotive and conceptual response to landscape and place, inspired by the contrast of built and unbuilt environment that forms the city of Sydney. Jacob Spokes' on his process; "I have an idea of colour relationship before I start and that’s it. No preliminary sketches or anything. The works reveal themselves after a layered serendipitous process, whereby I apply layers of colour and form until I reach a point in which the work is compositionally sound."
