The Weight of Cold Meat: New Paintings by Caleb Reid 10 - 26 November 2016
Caleb Reid (b. 1988) is a Sydney based artist working primarily in painting. In 2013, Reid completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the National Art School, with a focus on drawing, ceramics and sculpture. Reid has held solo exhibitions in Sydney and Melbourne, and has also been involved in group exhibitions both nationally and internationally, including Berlin, Germany. Caleb Reid’s recent work is characterised by an experimentation with process and the exploration of the relationship between creative and emotional forces. Asked about his process Reid expressed; “My process is playful, it’s emotive and immediate. I understand that if I set out a few paintings tomorrow, and then complete those paintings, they can never, ever be replicated. Even if I set out the same canvas the day after. They are capturing a very specific moment in time.” Recently, Caleb Reid participated in the group exhibition Scalene at Piermarq Gallery, which was the opening show of Piermarq’s new gallery space, and formed part of Art Month Sydney and Paddington Art at Night. The Weight of Cold Meat: New Paintings by Caleb Reid is the artist’s first solo show at Piermarq and presents a diverse body of work, unified by a process of play, chance and intuition. The exhibition opens on 10 November 2016 and will run until 26 November 2016.

Caleb Reid’s first solo show at Piermarq presents a diverse body of work, unified by a process of play, chance and intuition. His visceral works are a sensuous response to form, exploring various subjects, from the nude to the artist’s own emotional state. In 2016, Reid was constantly moving, spending no more than a few weeks at any given location and creating work during intensive, isolated periods in make-shift studios across Australia. This body of work reflects this pace and movement, and explores the relationship between creative and emotional forces. The body of work is a product of Reid’s experimentation with process. For American gunfight (2016), Reid rolled out a long stretch of canvas in a field producing a series of violent, turbulent works in quick succession. Whereas the erotic, interlocked forms in Still life with amyl bottles (2016) are more compositionally considered, using visual references from vintage smut books found in op-shops. Asked about this body of work Reid expressed that; “These works come from me at a stage in my life where I am settled, and I just feel comfortable being playful with my art. These works are different as they aren’t coming from a depressive, adolescent mindset like some of my previous work.” However, within this contentedness Reid is still able to create emotionally charged works that confront the viewer with their primal, abstract imagery and sumptuous colour.

The Weight of Cold Meat: New Paintings by Caleb Reid is the culmination of a year on the move. It is the expression of an artist who has found new vigour in what it means to be unencumbered by the past. A provocative and ambitious exhibition from a young artist who has found his meaning through the process of painting.
