ZOE YOUNG

Space Between Hours

is artist Zoe Young’s first solo exhibition with Piermarq in Paddington. Her latest series of

paintings are a collage of time; coalesced with childhood memories, everyday interactions and accidental fascinations - a book, an heirloom, a ripe plum from the garden. Zoe Young is ever inspired by her surroundings in the Southern Highlands, NSW. Through her rich and evocative use of colour, she celebrates the seasonal changes, the light and forms that envelope her life and practice. This body of work reveals the significance that objects, both collected and inherited, hold for the artist. For instance, Young incorporates studies of artworks that have resonated with her since childhood, such as Benjamin Edwin Minns' etching Aboriginal mother & child (1925) which features in Ode to Minns (2017). In this way, she pays homage to her Grandfather’s art collection and enters into a dialogue with these artists across time and space. Zoe Young’s still life compositions are unashamedly feminine, and are an intimate reflection of her environment and lifestyle, as a mother of two working from a countryside studio. Since having children Young has become wary of the accelerated pace of modern life. Her paintings are an attempt to slow down and grasp time, by capturing unique, tranquil moments and distilling them on canvas. Space Between Hours is a retreat and a space to meditate, away from the noise and chaos of modern life. It is the expression of an artist whose life and artistic practice are harmoniously intertwined. Space Between Hours opens on Thursday 30 March, 6 - 8pm at Piermarq, Paddington, and runs until Saturday 22 April 2017

ZOE YOUNG (b. 1978) Zoe Young (b.1978) is a rising talent within the Sydney art scene. She is currently based in Bowral, Southern Highlands, NSW with her husband and two young children. Young’s paintings are marked by her eclectic use of colour and sharp eye for unique landscape and still-life compositions. Despite having graduated from the National Art School, Zoe Young is self-taught in the areas of illustrating, photography, sewing and her passion – painting. Through her use of pastel tones and dramatic shadow, her still life compositions reflect an emotive response to her environment. Young adapts her eccentric colour palate to evoke the characteristics of her subject matter – as displayed in her wonderful Archibald Finalist Portrait (2014) of Torah Bright. Zoe Young is a seasoned finalist in the Archibald Portraiture Prize, selected in 2014 with her portrait of Olympic Snowboarder Torah Bright and again in 2016 with her portrait of Indigenous Australian model Sam Harris. Within her portraiture and still life works, Young has truly excelled and established herself as one of the forefront painters within a new generation of Australian artists. As one of Australia’s rising talents, Young received the 2013 John Briscoe Memorial Prize judged by Lucy Culliton and runner up of the 2014 Yen Young Female Artist of the Year Award with her portrait of Winter Olympian Frank Prihoda. In one of Zoe Young’s landmark exhibitions, Home (2015) at The Art Society, Southern Highlands, the body of work reflected her childhood of seasonal changes – Bowral in spring, Thredbo in winter and summer in Sydney. In the last stages of pregnancy at the time of this exhibition, Young’s art making methods had “turned her eye to the more natural and slower things in life.” Most recently, Young has been exploring landscape and still-life inspired by her surroundings in the Southern Highlands.
