VARIANTS MAXIMILIAN DANIELS 15 - 25 MARCH 2017
VARIANTS MAXIMILIAN DANIELS Opening Night: Wednesday 15 March 2017, 6-8pm 15 - 25 March 2017, Tue-Sat 10am-5pm 76 Paddington St Paddington NSW 2021 RSVP 02 9660 7799 or via Eventbrite Piermarq is proud to present to you the catalogue of Maximilian Daniel’s second solo exhibition, Variants, opening on 15 March 2017. Of all colours black is the most complex. Often regarded as a pigment devoid of colour, black is rather a conglomeration of all colours across the spectrum of light. Artist Maximilian Daniels uses this statement as an entry point to investigate the variants in the spectrum of black and the artistic processes of painting, gesture, form and colour. The act of mixing paint is an intrinsic part of the painting process. To mix black; warm and cool primary pigments; blue, red and yellow, are combined in exact quantities. Hidden by its dark saturated pigment, spectral variations in hand-mixed black are not perceived as easily as in other colours. The paintings in Variants are composed of layers of black paint at various stages of the mixing process that have been tinted with white to test their spectral variation. Uncorrected after testing, each black layer holds a tint towards the strongest colour present. The gestural application of each transparent layer creates an undulating surface that has both depth and flatness. Maximilian Daniels forged each component of the process-based paintings from scratch. He selected and primed the canvas by hand, and hand-made all of the individual stretchers and frames to precision. The resulting body of work has a dramatic presence and a delicate, tactile quality. Variants is an ambitious and challenging exhibition that brings the process of painting back to its essence. Variants opens on 15 March 2017, and forms part of Art Month Sydney’s Paddington Art at Night. The exhibition runs until 25 March 2017.
MAXIMILIAN DANIELS (b. 1991) Maximilian Daniels (b. 1991) is an emerging Australian artist living and working in Sydney, NSW. Daniels’ completed his artistic training at UNSW ART & Design in Sydney, where he finalised a double degree, one being his Bachelor of Arts in painting and drawing. His practice is an ongoing investigation into abstract painting and techniques used to construct an abstract image. His practice involves and interrogates traditional notions of observation, representation and technique. Maximilian Daniels’ work draws upon the repeated processes and materiality of painting; mixing of colour, composition of the painting ground, layering of surface, and the application of the mark to develop visual observations of the action of painting itself. Through repeating techniques used in his practice Daniels creates work that examines colour and its relation to gesture and materiality in painting. By sequentially layering colour, Daniels creates delicate complex surfaces that emerge over time and examine the subtleties of colour. Each layer of material, primer and paint is visible as part of the superficial surface of the final image. The result is an image that holds both depth and flatness, and its own form of “temporal perspective”. The inherent materiality of Maximilian Daniels’ work challenges and deconstructs commonly accepted notions of what constitutes an image. Although very much informed by the process of observation and representation, the final image is devoid of all figurative imagery. Through using each process and material as both subject and substance for creating the image, Daniels elucidates a novel approach to the ‘image’ and the painting process.
