mmmmmmmmm

Paul Hartigan, best known for his pop infused imagery and striking neon light installations, has been a lover of polaroid since the 1970s. His Powerflowers suite of works are the enlarged results from a vivid series of excursions into the Auckland Domain’s lush Wintergardens. Multiple exposures onto the Polaroid’s emulsive surface convey a mellow and dreamy world. Golden hues evoke a nostalgia; the enigma of the multiple exposure, a sense of time-lapse. Stuart Mackenzie, originally from Scotland, has, since his teens, singlemindedly pursued this medium and has been a professional practitioner for 25 years. An award-winning photographer and regular exhibitor based in Raglan with a diverse oeuvre, this suite of black and white photographs are compelling and sensitive responses to the Waikato, and often characterised by mystery. A recent finalist in the NZ Painting & Printmaking Awards 2012, his entry Waterfront, Napier exemplifies the immaculate pictorial construction, subtlety of colour and sense of quietude Mackenzie exels at. Martin Horspool is a social documentary style photographer, originally from Wales, whose preoccupation with bike culture stems from his teens, his series, ‘Mods and Rockers’, continues his ongoing interest in conveying the verve and singularity of New Zealand’s sub-cultures. These black and white shots are random and discreet; through Horspool’s lens, the present and a nostalgic past co-exist.
