J O H N B A D C O C K Sculpting with paint... John Badcock creates rich, texturally luscious portraits and landscapes... The immense skill of John’s painterly ability is demonstrated in these stunning self portraits which are so thickly built up, yet the oil paint is still controlled, molded and carved into capturing the particulars of individual human expression and the depths of emotion. John has become renowned for portraiture and he is a published portraitist in his first book, “Passing People – 100 portraits”. This book provides an in depth look at his latest series of 100 Portraits, which was exhibited at the Waikato Museum at the end of 2015. John Badcock has exhibited since 1985, and achieved many accolades, including many art awards over his career and in 2007 he was selected for the Archibald Salon des Refuses exhibition in Sydney, Australia. In 2008 he was elected to the South Canterbury Hall of Fame, Timaru. Badcock’s series ‘The Last Supper’ , was recently exhibited at the Christchurch Cathedral. Early in 2015 John was included in the top 10 Great Artists from New Zealand list, compiled by theculturetrip.com and joins the other great artists such as Bill Hammond, Jason Greig and Kushana Bush. Badcock’s works are held extensively in major public collections throughout New Zealand including Christchurch Art Gallery, The Hocken Library, Dunedin, New Zealand Portrait Gallery, Wellington, Aigantighe Art Gallery, Timaru, Andersons Park, Invercargill and internationally in various private collections and at the Sackman Corporation in New York. John Badcock’s creamy evocactive landscape paintings illustrate his mastery of the medium, the layers of oil paint spread and carved to form fields of grass lands and seeding flowers, to the changing of seasons and Autumnal colours spreading across the landscape, to the first of the Winter snow with Magpies dotted across the plains. Badcock is the subject of two New Zealand Art Films, John Badcock - a Film by Brian High, and in a film by Simon Pattison & Cowboy Productions titled A Changing Landscape. Coming from a well known artistic family in New Zealand art history, John Badcock’s expressionist painting style could not be further removed from that of his famous father Douglas, whose painting depicting the same area, are traditional and romanticised landscapes. John first began painting with his father, Douglas Badcock, in the Queenstown, South Canterbury area over 45 years ago. Father and son preferred to paint en plein-air together. John’s two other brothers, Brian and David also paint landscapes. John Badcock has now been working as a professional artist for more than three decades and has had over 25 public gallery/museum solo exhibitions and over 40 dealer solo exhibitions.
