With the development of portrait painting since the earliest surviving examples, (the funeral portraits in Egypt’s Fayum district from the classical age), came the realisation that the subject itself is more important than the medium, the paint is the vehicle which to drive the artists particular point of view and their depiction of the subject.
At the core of the portrait painting genre, lies the desire to depict and capture the true inner‘essence’of the sitter.
Whether it be a commission for public or for private, a memorialisation of the rich and powerful or a homage to the sitter showing admiration or affection. The portrait is a remembrance. The portrait is forever.
