Pietro Cedone portfolio
jan. 2018
a short introduction
My name is Pietro Cedone and I am a young communication designer currently based in Milan, I recently finished my studies at Polytechnic of Milan where I received both Bachelor and Master degree in Communication Design. I have realized a Master Degree thesis about the actual phenomenon of the so-called “independent magazines” in which I have investigated about the ways, potentialities and motivations of grassroots paper printing in the present age. You can read it entirely here. Until now I have discovered that I can work in several areas of communication design. Despite of that, I am particularly interested in editorial design, branding and – from a few time – I really got fascinated by motion graphics. I learnt how to use AfterEffects and I am currently learning how to use Cinema 4D following an online training course by Grayscalegorilla. For me, studying design has always been something beyond things like “I have to become a great designer, I have to improve all my technical skills”. I perceive communication design as a way to help someone in solving a problem in (possibly) unexpected ways. So, I think a designer is someone who must focus both on his skills and on the needs of the people around him in order to learn more and more to interpret people needs and desires. For this reason, during my university years I tried not to care only about my projects: for example, I became a students spokesperson in the Degree Course Council where I worked together with professors and students in order to improve the didactics of the course. For the same reason, I planned and held a short AfterEffects training course first-year-students oriented. Anyway: you can also take a look to my curriculum vitae (you find it on the back cover of this portfolio). y in Milan. ctor working at FUD Fa tly en rr cu I’m : te Last upda as UX, e design process th in ed lv vo in y nl I’m mai gner. d re-branding desi an ng di an br al ic phys

BA thesis - Poesie by Gregory Corso
jan. 2014
This is a reinterpretation of an existing book titled “Poesie. It was originally published in 1971 by Guanda Editore and it was a collection of poems written by the italoamerican poet Gregory Corso. It is a visual book: I designed a visual language which is above (both literally and metaphorically) the written content. This language aims to give a visual shape of what the poet thought about writing poems: he considered it as a way to elevate himself above his wretched life.

contest Cersaie manifesto
july 2014
A manifesto proposal realized for a contest launched by CERSAIE – Salone internazionale della ceramica per l’architettura e dell’arredobagno. The concept of the images we produced is the khôra: a coarse surface from which everything can be generated. We wanted to underline a core property of ceramic: to be liquid and solid at the same time. From this liquid material everything solid can emerge.

Mexican migrant generator
jan. 2016
This is a project I realized working in team during the Final Synthesis Course (by Density Design) during the Master Degree course at Politecnico di Milano (A.Y. 2015-2016). In this course, we worked on the migration topic. In particular, during the last phase of the course we decided to investigate in which way cinema helps in transmitting stereotypes about migrants (both positive and negative ones). We discovered that the migratory flux which is told the most in the film industry is from Mexico to USA, so we decided to focus on mexican migrants who go toward the United States. We collected the features of 72 characters of movies about this particular topic. In the online experience we designed we propose the user to create what he thinks is “the standard mexican migrant presented in movies by using an interactive dashboard. Once the user’s character is born, it is possible to discover if and in how many movies a similar character is presented, so the user can find out how much his personal character is part of cinema stereotypes. In the last part of the website there is a visualization in which it is presented the gap between how a movie character actually is (good o r evil) and how he is perceived by the people watching the movie. This kind of data has been obtained by plotting the keywords the users write about each movie in IMDB). Anyway, it is easier done than said: try it yourself (https:// goo.gl/zUK3O1). Use exclusively arrow keys to navigate.

MA thesis Grassroots magazine
apr. 2017
This is the thesis I wrote for my Master Degree in Communication Design at Politecnico di Milano. It is an investigation about the so-called “independent magazines”, an actual phenomenon characterized from blurred boundaries. Indeed, one of the attempts of my research is to better define this phenomenon. I also wanted to focus on the ways, motivations and potentialities of grassroots paper printing in the present age, which was defined as “Liquid modernity” by Zygmunt Bauman and “Convergence culture” by Henry Jenkins. I also paid particular attention in the behavior of these grassroots publishing experiences online. Indeed, I think that one of the more interesting features of these publications is their particular way of realizing a trans-medial storytelling.
