IN KANSAS, VIRGINIA AND PENNSYLVANIA

Three new chapters added were officially initiated on Friday evening and Saturday morning at the Heinz Memorial Chapel on the Pittsburgh campus. The ritual was conducted under the leadership of Brother Travis Julian, Alabama, who had flown in from Chicago for that purpose.

It had been 44 years,9 months, and 5 days since Pi Kappa Phi added a chapter in Pennsylvania. But all of that changed on February 25, 1978. This day saw the Fraternity add its third chapter in the state of Pennsyvania, Delta Upsilon at the University of Pittsburgh. Brother David Lane, Purdue, left his official role as legal advisor to Pi

The second chartering for Pi Kappa Phi in 1978 occured on April 1, 1978 when Delta Phi Chapter was officially made a part of the Fraternity. The chapter of 35 members is located at Radford College in Radford, Virginia. This is but 20 miles from VPI and 35 miles from Roanoke, both having chapters of Pi Kappa Phi. Radford, formerly for women only, became co-ed in 1972, and now has approximately 6000 students. The advisor from inception has been Brother Fred Thayer, Northern Illinois. He has been aided by Brother U.S. Judge James Turk, Roanoke, who has been instrumental in this chapter's success and was the speaker for the chartering banquet. The ritual of initiation was conducted by student members from VPI and James Madison University, under the leadership of Brother Ted Scharfenstein, Florida Southern, the Past National President of Pi Kappa Phi. The chartering officer

was Dr. Lonnie Strickland, Alabama, the National Vice President of Pi Kappa Phi. The charter members of this new chapter are: John D. Westberg, John Payne, Kevin W. Roche,Raymond L. Scott, Gary T. With the help of alumni members Mike Wamsley, Jacksonville, an associate chapter of Pi Kappa Phi was started by Mark Ashley, UNCC, at Kansas State University in early 1977. Finally, Pi Kappa Phi was to be represented in the state of Kansas. And a good one it was, to be chartered on April 15, 1978. The chartering of this new chapter, Delta Chi, was conducted by

Brother Fred Diulus, Florida State, as chartering officer, and Robert Mitchell, East Texas State, as his assistant. All present for the chartering banquet were privileged to hear Brother Mel Metcalf, Oklahoma, as the speaker. Traveling to Manhattan, Kansas for the purpose of serving as the initiating team were students from the University of Missouri - Rolla and N. E. Missouri State. Going then from his home in St. Paul, Minnesota, was the founder of this group, Mark Ashley.

In the early morning hours of Sunday, June 11, the Gamma Gamma Chapter house of Troy State University suffered extensive fire damage. The fire started in a back bedroom and proceeded out of the room and spread through the hallways. The three occupants of the house at the time of the fire were not injured, although personal belongings were lost. At present, the Gamma Gamma Housing Corporation and the members of the board of Pi Kappa Phi Properties (which owned the house) are working together to assist Gamma Gamma in finding future housing.

"Truth, caring and southern hospitali

So much of it comes back when you visit Charleston: the sense of pride, the feeling of brotherhood, the desire to shake your brothers hand. A warm feeling for your fellow man seems to fill your heart as it fills the air of this old city. A walk down Broad Street quietens any remorse you may have had about the hard times your chapter may have had or the inner questioning as to whether you are still welcome at your chapter. Did someone fail to speak to you the last time you visited your chapter? Did you receive a request for a donation from the "National" that seemed like the "umpteenth" request you've gotten? Did the trend of long hair and beards of a few years ago turn you off? Did you see a young man in a Pi Kappa Phi jersey drinking too much at a ball game and wonder if your chapter had gone to the dogs? Perhaps you, like me, long for the days when fraternity meant "spiffy" kids in blazers with a Pi Kappa Phi coat of arms, rep ties and weejuns and a fire in the fire place of the trophy laden, oak-paneled meeting room. Where are the kids with manners and enough maturity to know when to use them? If any of these thoughts or questions have crossed your mind in recent years, they may have lingered long enough to make you say "I guess I've outgrown my interest in fraternities." That was probably the last time you really made a contribution of time or money. I can understand — or as the kids of today say,"I know where you're comin'from." The truth is all there, in Charleston. It's not long hair, requests for money, manners, weejuns, booze or blazer patches that makes your Fraternity what it is, or isn't. It's the solidarity of caring and happiness of sharing. Charleston bubbles over with the feeling of solidarity. Saint Michaels Church, the Dock Street Theatre, the historic Nathaniel Russell house and Middleton Place Plantation was there then and will be there hundreds of years from now. When I asked the owner for a building tour of an insurance company which now occupies 90 Broad Street, the site of the founding of our great Fraternity, he couldn't have been more hospitable. Caring is a way of life in Charleston. I'm glad that it was in this historic city that our Fraternity was born. Caring and sharing, love and friendliness are a great commodity here. I hope you too will find this truth when we celebrate our 75th Anniversary in what I believe to be the most beautiful city that I have ever seen. Why not write in "truth, caring and southern hospitality" on your 1979 calendar under august 19-23? It'll be a great time and I'd love for you to be there. So much of it comes back when you visit Charleston. (Phil Tappy)

Dear Brother Owen: "During the past two years, Alpha Omicron of Pi Kappa Phi has been participating in a CAR program and has found it a particularly effective mechanism for communicating information to Alpha Omicron alumni. During this period of time, the undergraduate chapter has been going through a rebuilding process and on a number of occasions has relied upon alumni to provide assistance and help. Because of the reorganizational effort and, at one point, very low membership, without the type of organizational effort provided by CAR, I'm sure we would not have had the support and involvement of our alumni. The development of a newsletter or information to alumni is a time-consuming process. At least in the case of Alpha Omicron and the individuals associated with it at Iowa State, most of us are heavily involved in other activities, particularly with other demands in terms of supporting the chapter, and we found it almost impossible to devote the necessary effort to generate any alumni support. Being able to utilize CAR and rely upon some professional expertise and experience that the program had encountered in other chapters, I am sure that we benefited from it locally. Obviously the program does not relieve either the local undergraduate or alumni from providing information that can be used to effectively communicate with alumni, but it certainly helps to have

Although the financial obligations associated with this program require a payment to CAR out of the funds raised through the program, in the case of Iowa State, we have been able to cover the distribution expenses and a balance of funds available for use by the local corporation. In any case, our intention in entering in this program was not primarily a. fund-raising effort but to provide continued communication to alumni and continue to gain their support for the efforts at Iowa State. I personally can endorse the CAR Program and feel that it has been very helpful for Iowa State. If there are any shortcomings, I believe they rest on the local chapters in terms of having to provide adequate information for use in the information dissemination program." Warren R. Madden Alpha Omicron—Iowa State

A SAFE INVESTMENT WITH A GOOD DIVIDEND

Have you ever invested in a young man's college education? It is an investment in which you can take pride. Here is your opportunity. The Pi Kappa Phi Scholarship Foundation is dedicated to providing financial assistance and encouragement to young men who desire an education but are without sufficient funds. The Foundation is a tax exempt organization operated by a volunteer Board of Trustees who are members of your Fraternity. The young men who will be leaders in our nation in the future are on the campuses of our colleges right now;some of them need our assistance and support. An investment in a young man's college education will help to prepare him better, both for good citizenship and for tomorrow's responsibilities. The inclusion of the following clause in your will (or your desination of the Pi Kappa Phi Scholarship Foundation in your life insurance policy as a beneficiary) will insure that you will be a part of some youn man's future: "I give, devise, and bequeath to the Pi Kappa Phi Scholarship Foundation the sum of Dollars." (or otherwise describe the gift if it consists of real estate, securities, or personal property.)

DO IT TODAY For additional information regarding the Foundation, write the Pi Kappa Phi Scholarship Foundation, P. 0. Box 240295, Charlotte, NC 28224.

The great movie director D. W. Griffith, filmed "The Birth of a Nation" with the utmost sincere motives. He wanted to portray a segment of American history, one not wished to be remember by the black population. His classic is still marvelled as an epic of motion picture history. Harriet Beecher Stowe probably wrote "Uncle Tom's Cabin" with a similar innocent intent; however, blacks have been alienated by the novel. And yet the general response made to blacks regarding their estrangement is that they should accept it because the degradation of their forefathers was a part of their history. A segment of their "roots" to be respected but not forgotten. Now I know why many blacks react to such works with alienation. A recent production of the popular television show "Happy Days" brought the same reaction from me. We don't like to see ourselves as we were in less complimentary eras. This particular "Happy Days" segment featured Richie, Potsie and Ralph pledging a fraternity at the local college. The trio underwent the mental and physical hazing typical to the late 1950's in which the show is set. They were paddled they scrubbed floors with toothbrushes, they were covered with syrup and feathers, and they were made to perform various embarrassing stunts in public. Such behavior is a segment of collegiate fraternity history, one not wished to be remembered by the Greek population. We are insulted to view such acts, but mainly we are afraid that parents and their

sons and daughters will see the productions and assume the behavior is still in existence. With the advent of the movies "Fraternity Row","Animal House", and "Hazing", our fear increased, and the national Greek offices along with their professional affiliates adopted a premature paranoia and scrambled to attempt counterattacks to the movies. Although many of the productions are not factual in their portrayals, there is nothing we can do to thwart the Hollywood game of making money at all costs with no end barred. Our response as professionals should be one of appreciation for those productions which are accurately predict our heritage. It was one for which we should not be embarrassed because it should not be our duty to review the past and apologize for occurrences not to our liking. It was needed to encourage and even force innovation for the future. "Fraternity Row" writer-producer Gary Allison commented recently that it is not his job to promote or degrade fraternities and sororities. His job, he said, is to make movies. And that is what he did. Allison added that it is the responsibility of the nationals to sell their system. We must concur, and time spend developing counterpoints to Allison is time wasted. There is a lesson to be learned from "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and the "Happy Days". Such productions will continue, new and old. In fact, "Happy Days" producer Garry Marshall, an Alpha Tau Omega, has made arrangements with Alpha Tau Omega's National Office to use the fraternity's name in upcoming shows. Richie, Potsie, and Ralph pledged ATO at the conclusion of the first show dealing with fraternities, and future segments are expected to have the three experience other fraternity rites of passage. All forms of media are capable of insulting some aspect of each of our heritages when they delve into the annals and make quasi-factual reproductions. Undobtedly some are contumelious; however, it is best that we not participate in debate of any nature and continue to pursue innovative progress. Perhaps Harper Lee said it best in "To Kill a Mockingbird" when she wrote that the best way to know a man is to stand in his shoes and look out on his world. These media affronts give us the opportunity to do just that. — Larry Lunsford, Advisor to Fraternities (University of Pittsburgh)

Alumni Recommendations There have been many different approaches that have made recruitment easier and more enjoyable to chapters and rushees. Social events, athletic activities, and a session of film presentations all occupy their importance in recruitment. But there is still another way in which you, the alumnus, can aid a chapter in this area. We call it alumni recommendations. Having an alumni recommendation on a prospective rushee can be extremely valuable to a chapter's rushing efforts. An alumni recommendation not only allows the chapter, in its rushing effort, the advan-

tage of being able to acknowledge to a rushee that a Pi Kappa Phi alumnus has recommended him. The location of prospective recommendations is easier than you may expect. A neighborhood friend, golfing partner, and a friend of a friend all qualify. Also, local newspapers list the names of high school graduates and their future plans for study. If you have a particular recommendation, please use the form below. Anytime you hear of someone interested and don't have a form, write us at the Administrative Office and the information will be passed on.

The 1977-78 Voluntary Dues program was financially successful. Over 3300 alumni contributed $55,769 to the on going of their Fraternity. Some gave more than the $15 requested. They are identified by an asterisk (*) appearing after their name as an indication of the Fraternity's appreciation.

This represents 25% of the cost of operating Pi Kappa Phi. Without these alumni, the Fraternity could not survive year after year. In recognition of the 75th Anniversary, the National Council has establis hed a goal of $75,000 for the 1978-79 year. Your participation in these special financial activities is essential.

The alumni and student members of Alpha Xi have announced plans to celebrate its 50th Anniversary on the weekend of November 11,1978. Extensive plans are being made which should result in a very exciting and memorable weekend for all that attend. The weekend will begin on Friday evening with a cocktail party hosted by the undergraduate brothers at the chapter house. A full agenda is slated for Saturday with the culminating event being a formal dinner at one of New York City's finest hotel ballrooms. We congratulate Alpha Xi on their 50th Anniversary and urge all alumni to mark this date on their calendars. If there are any further questions, write John Plunkett, 33 Sidney Place, Brooklyn, NY 11201.

Let us know before you move

Let us know before you move. By doing so you will be sure not to miss communications concerning information about our Fraternity and your chapter. Letting us know before you move saves money. If mail is returned from an old address, Pi Kappa Phi pays 25 cents for the return, plus 15 cents to remail to the new address. Help us keep up with you by sending new address information to the Pi Kappa Phi Administrative Office, P. 0. Box 240295, Charlotte, NC 28224.

If we may help! Many alumni have expressed support to the Pi Kappa Phi Scholarship Foundation through their many contributions in the past years. In an effort to expand the capital base of the Foundation, we offer some alternative ways in which alumni may participate in the building of that base. One method of contribution that is as practical as it is simple is the use of an insurance policy to satisfy one's charitable goal. And in this method there are again two alternatives. One is to purchase an insurance policy in which the Pi Kappa Phi Scholarship Foundation, Inc. is named beneficiary. A second alternative is to transfer the beneficiary of a policy from one that is obsolete to a more practical one. Is that insurance policy you bought for your daughter's wedding, or the one on your mortgage still needed? The Foundation could easily be named as the substitute beneficiary of this policy, and this alternative may be very appropriate for some alumni to take advantage of optional settlement provisions of the policy. Another method of contribution is the use of a will to provide a bequest. In the form of a general bequest the specific amount of cash to a specific beneficiary will be met on a "firstcall" which means that taxes will be satisfied on the estate first. A special bequest, which states that a certain item of property go to Pi Kappa Phi Scholarship Foundation will be honored only if that property is on the estate at the time of death. And finally, there is the residuary bequest, which states that after all financial obligations to the estate have been met, a payment of all which is left will be made to the Pi Kappa Phi Scholarship Foundation as the beneficiary of this bequest. A third method of contribution is in the area of gifts of appreciated property (stocks, personal and real property). A move in this direction should not be made before consulting your personal attorney and contacting the Administrative Office.

While the Pi Kappa Phi Scholarship Foundation is not organized to operate ongoing businesses in the form of gifts, we do have personel who could lend valuable insight with respect to any appreciated property. We welcome any discussion you may have in this area. In certain cases, an alumnus may wish to contribute cash or real property while at the same time enjoy a present and future income from that property. In a case of this nature, the property may be placed under a trust arrangement to meet a donors needs as well as make a contribution to the Foundation. The Pi Kappa Phi Scholarship Foundation is already managing one such trust of significant size. And finally, there is still the simple method of an outright contribution of gifts of cash to the Foundation. Marketable securities are also easy to exchange and these two methods may be the most attractive devices of all for joining in the building of a capital base. If we can be of any help in answering questions, please contact: Stuart Hicks, Pi Kappa Phi Scholarship Foundation, Inc., P.0.Box 240295, Charlotte, NC 28224.

This house was originally built in 1794. Recognize it? Following an earthquake it was repaired in 1886. In December of 1904 it was occupied by the Fogarty family and from then on it has become well known in the history of Pi Kappa Phi. Yes! This is where it all began. We invite you to Charleston for the 75th Anniversary Supreme Chapter in 1979 where you too can enjoy this historically marked location.

Again, Pi Kappa Phi is honored to recognize the accomplishments of yet another brother serving the public and their interests. On July 5 of this year brother Brian R. Connelly of Ann Arbor, Michigan, was installed as the International Civitan President at the International Convention in Albuquerque, New Mexico. As a leader of the world's greatest service organization, Brian has packed imcomparable activity into the 14 years since he became a charter member of the Ann Arbor, Michigan Club. He has personally sponsored 90 new civitans and has helped charter nine Senior and two Junior clubs, while at the same time climbed the Civitan leadership ladder and greatly contributed to district and international operations. At 42, Brian is a reflection of a new wave of youthful participation underway among the world's service clubs. Brian was the initiator of Civitan's highly successful IMG program, which has been used by clubs across the continent to promote bigtime sports events for profit and publicity. An advertising executive, he is president of his own agency. He has lent his professional expertise to Civitan in writing materials for the Seek Kit in 1969, along with numerous Civitan promotions, slide presentations, and club magazine articles. Not limiting his energies and talents to Civitan, he has served on the Ann Arbor City Council and other civic, service, and political committees. Among these activities are City Councilman of Ann Arbor (1967-69), Outstanding Young Man of Ann Arbor (1971), Republican Silver Elephant Award (1968), and President of Michigan Special Olympics 1976-77. A graduate of Michigan State University, Alpha Theta (1958), Brother Connelly currently resides in Ann Arbor with his wife, Jan, and their children, Pat, Mike, and Kelly. We offer our congratulations to Brother Connelly, a man who is indicative of that fresh spirit of participation, and wish him well as he accepts this new and challenging position.
