VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Many of us still remember parts of our associate member education. I still have my White Diamond from 1972. That was the basis for my member education. It has the signatures of Durward Owen, Mark Timmes and now Jake Henderson inscribed on the first page. Back then, it was the primary way you learned the history and the traditions of our national Fraternity. Today is much different.

Today, associate member education is a multi-week program that includes not only our history and culture, but leadership and personal development. As a former chapter advisor, it can be overwhelming to manage the amount of material and requirements needed to conduct a complete member education program. Also, many schools, like Indiana University, are mandating the associate member period between accepting a bid and becoming a full member through initiation last only four to six weeks. So how do wardens in our undergraduate chapters handle this challenge? Pi Kappa Phi, with support from the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation developed a solution.

In January of this year, National Headquarters staff devised a four-day program to be held over two weekends to train every chapter’s warden on the model associate member education program. Alpha Psi was selected to host this inaugural program for the first two weekends in August. We are centrally located and have a facility that can house 80 participants each weekend, thereby allowing every chapter to participate. Our facility will be used for both housing and education sessions. Alpha Psi alumni and undergraduates fully supported this event. Housing everyone will not be easy, given the annual work on our facility needs to be completed a month earlier than in a normal year, but we are working hard to complete the task on time.
