THE PIKE PRESS Letter from the Editors
Dear Pike:
Welcome to the first edition of the Pike Press. This year, we are really hoping that the Pike Press will become an important communication outlet for the comings and goings inside of Pike and of the world outside. These pages are aimed to be a little slice of what Pike is passionate about, what we care about and what dierences and impacts we would like to make on this world, no matter how small. Everything in this newspaper is something we believe in, and we would like to thank you for taking the time to read the Pike Press.

Flag Football Fundraiser By Ava Harrington
Last week, the students of ALBANE and Pike faculty got together after school for a game of flag football. The rain began to pour but students and teachers alike still pulled through for a casual game to raise money for charity. The game lasted an hour and with some decisive plays from Mr. Smith barreling past the defense. The final score was 63-21. Overall it was a wet, yet fantastic game for a great cause.

Sports Column
By Aidan Marzeotti
Perfect temperatures, a nice breeze, combined with the beautiful New England foliage creates the ideal time for competing in athletics. With the conclusion of fall sports at Pike this Wednesday, two-thirds of the fall teams had more wins than losses. Though every team was successful, the Girl’s Varsity Soccer Team had arguably the best record of them all. With nine wins and zero losses, they can pat themselves on the back. They even managed to beat Pike’s rival Shore six to zero.
From September to November, Pike Spirit was everywhere! If you attended any of the games, you definitely saw fellow Quills cheering on their peers. Even in school, athletes showed their pride everywhere. Though we have to say goodbye to the nice fall weather and hope for a pleasant winter, we can look forward to intramural and winter sports. Go Quills!
A New Sports Experience By Kayla Lang
This September was the first time I've played field hockey. I came into the sport new and clueless. Slowly, I began to learn the fundamentals like how to hold the stick, how to dribble, zig zag, etc. I basically learned how to play field hockey. But, I didn't realize that I learned a lot of other things too. Believe it or not, this was the first team sport that I have played. I swim and I play tennis but those are both solo sports. I've never had the feeling of people depending on me or me depending on others. For the first time in my life, I could pass to others, have other people cheering for me, and most importantly, I could celebrate with my team whether we won or not. I made friends that I haven't even thought of talking to, I've sang louder than I thought I could. And I realized, when you're on that bus, singing some random Katy Perry song at the top of your lungs with your team, or laughing with your new friends, or even making that perfect drive in the middle of the field, that is when you are truly the winner.
Fall Sports Stats: Boys Varsity Soccer: 5 wins, 3 losses
Boys JV Soccer: 3 wins, 3 losses
Boys Sixth Grade Soccer: 7 wins, 1 losses
Girls Varsity Soccer: 10 wins, 0 losses
Girls JV Soccer: 5 wins, 1 loss
Field Hockey: 1 win, 2 losses Pike News

7th Grade AMC Trip
October 27, 2015
FOOD The food was very good. The first night, we had homemade seasoned bread with salad, and homemade ranch dressing. And that was just the appetizer! For the main course, we had quesadillas, sweet potatoes, and chicken. There was so much food and it was all so good! I thought for sure we would all have tons of leftover food on our plates, but we had only one pound of O.R.T.! Then, right when we thought that the meal was over, the staff brought out VANILLA CAKE WITH FROSTING AND SPRINKLES! Everyone finished their slices in the first minute they were on the table, but then when we all reached for the last slice of cake at our tables, our group leaders said, "No more cake for you!" and so nobody had the last slices of cake.
For breakfast during both of the mornings there was a buffet. The night before, we had chosen one of three sandwiches to have before we went for our hikes. I had lettuce, provolone, tomato and mayonnaise on a bulky roll. It was delicious!
That evening, we had homemade whole wheat bread and salad with homemade ranch dressing, just like the last dinner. The main meal that night was chicken, along with mashed potatoes. After dinner, we checked how much O.R.T. we had, and it was more than last night's! We had 3 pounds of O.R.T.! Then, they turned the lights off and brought out another cake! We all sang happy birthday to Emily H., and then we got to eat the delicious cake. It was a marble cake with cinnamon on the vanilla frosting and it was even better than the first night's cake! But just like last night, the group leaders only let us have one piece.
The last meal we had at AMC was lunch: salad with italian and raspberry-something (ask Ms. Palmer) dressing. The main course was only pizza this time, but that doesn't mean it wasn't good! I only had the cheese pizza, but there was also a veggie pizza, and a gluten free pizza. For dessert, there were double chocolate chip cookies, and they were so good that I ended up having two! All of the previous meals had only water accompanying it, but this time, there was sweet tea! It had lots of flavor, and I found it lovely, though some people did not.
I believe that we will all miss AMC for different reasons, most of which being the hiking, obviously. But the reason I will miss it is because of the food! - Meera Kumar
A BIRTHDAY AT AMC Emily Huang's birthday was on October 15th. Usually, we celebrate birthdays at school by bringing in cookies or donuts during recess, but on Emily's birthday we were at AMC. There would be no locker decorating and cookies for Emily, but she did get to celebrate her birthday. After eating our dinner, the lights went out, and murmurs filled the dining room. Soon, a candle flickered in the hallway and the AMC staff started a familiar song. "Happy birthday to you," they sang. Students started to figure out what was happening and chimed in. "Happy birthday to you," the slices of cake were proceeding slowly to the tables. "Happy birthday dear Emily," (With many silent choruses of "oh it's Emily's birthday") "Happy birthday to you! " The candle was blown out and the lights flickered on. Many were smiling as they wolfed down the marble cake of cinnamon frosting. Stephanie Yang

SACO LAKE TESTING My first day, we headed down to Saco lake to test the acidity and dissolved oxygen level of the water. As we walked down the path, everyone began chattering excitedly as fog drifted across the mountains. Soon enough, it started to rain. Many of us learned that we had underestimated the cold New Hampshire air. Once at the lake, we split into partners and started testing. As cars whistled by, we figured the acidity and PH of the lake was about a 6. As the rain soaked the ground around us, we decided that the dissolved oxygen level was about an 8. After writing all this down in our journals, we headed indoors to discuss how good the lake was for living. After we concluded that the lake had just barely made the cut, we decided that the rain may have impacted our results and resolved to go back on a sunny day and test this again.- Stephanie Yang

Popping the Pike Bubble
October 27, 2015
By Olivia Lai
Many of us are familiar with the phrase, ‘the Pike Bubble’. For those of you that aren’t, the Pike Bubble is a side effect of the sheltered environment created by Pike that allows many of us students to become ignorant of the outside world. It is possible to have a close knit community without this bubble. This bubble may be used jokingly in hallways and in classrooms, but it has serious implications. The Pike Bubble fosters an environment where people treat serious topics as a joke, it allows us to make insensitive and offensive comments without even realizing it, and it allows us to be unaware of our changing world.
The Pike Bubble is a problem when I hear someone say, “Feminism doesn’t make sense because girls aren’t oppressed at Pike.” Feminism is not just about us; it’s about the 15 million girls that will become child brides in the coming year; it’s about the fact that in the United States, a woman is raped every 6 seconds; and it’s about the fact that men can’t express their feelings because they are afraid of seeming weak. We at Pike are not the center of everything.
The Pike Bubble is a problem when I say something about the Syrian refugee crisis and I still get blank looks. How can we expect to become responsible citizens, which is part of Pike’s mission statement, if we don’t even know what’s going on in the world?
The Pike Bubble is a problem when Caitlyn Jenner is used as a joke around campus. Transgender people are actual people that have problems and lives too, and their purpose is not to be used for feeble attempts at making friends laugh.
The Pike Bubble is a problem when I am automatically assumed to be in math club because I am asian. I more than just a stereotype and I am not the image that you’ve projected upon me.
The problem of the Pike Bubble can be easily solved. All we have to do is to be aware. Be aware of events going on in the world. Be aware of what you’re saying. Be aware of your own faults and try to correct them. Perhaps we could make it a habit to periodically check the news. We can remind people respectfully if they say something unintentionally offensive or ignorant, because we can all learn from each other. We can start conversations and discuss current events and issues, and this newspaper is a place in which we can do so. This problem is ours to fix. Teachers can only do so much to change the environment and mindset of Pike and nothing is going to change if we don’t do anything, no matter how many assemblies or meetings we have about it. The power to end the Pike Bubble is in our hands. So I challenge you, my fellow students at Pike, to affect change in our community and in yourself.

Why the Keystone XL Pipeline Doesn't Matter By Anna Lang
The Keystone XL Pipeline is a proposed project to create a pipeline from the Canadian oil sands to the United States for better access to the oils in Canada, and to potentially lower gas prices around the United States. This proposition has raised many social, ecological and economic controversies within this country. It has ballooned into such a prominent deal that political parties include the pipeline into their platforms, and multiple protests have happened as well. I consider the news and freedom of speech a privilege that many in the world could not even dream of having. Instead of listening to others opinions on the matter, I went ahead and did my own research.
The Keystone XL Pipeline ( source: http://blog.sfgate.com/ morford/wp-content/ blogs.dir/2467/files/ oiler-than-thouobama-wtf/keystonexl-pipeline.jpg)
For one, I found that the name of this entire project is misleading. The word "keystone" usually refers to something essential in the grand scheme of things. It makes it sound that this pipe will tip the global oil economy. Although it will have definite change on both Canada and the Pike News

ISSUE I

United States, the pipe will not produce any major impact on the world. By having XL follow the word Keystone, the pipe is automatically perceived to be huge. When I first heard of this topic, I immediately thought of a five foot diameter pipe. In reality, it is only 36 inches in diameter.
Another twisted part of this dispute is that about half of the pipe has already been built and is currently transporting 550,000 gallons of oil per day. It has proven itself effective and safe at preventing leaks for over five years now. It has weaned the United States off of Middle Eastern oil in exchange for something more localized.
I am not saying the Keystone pipeline is perfect. Many say that the readily available supply of fossil fuels with curve the attempt of switching to the more expensive, alternative energy. Others say that the pipe poses a danger to wildlife and even the surrounding towns. But at the end of the day, this article isn't about my opinion on whether it should or should not be built. This article is about using the Congress's, the media's and our time effectively. This pipe isn't a big enough deal to be in the limelight for five years. Over the course of those five years, major issues could have been resolved instead bickering over a pipe.
As talked about in the previous article ('The Pike Bubble'), an American bubble exists too. The double standards between our own livelihood within this country and outside of it are too drastically different. Although everything that has happened with the police this summer is a real eye-opener for everyone in the states, things far worse have been happening in countries like El Salvador for years, and not a single one of the thousands of police deaths per year are ever reported. Illegal immigration is less of a humanitarian issue to us, and more of how it could damage our own lives. It is not a made up tale- kids our own ages are dying from trying to cross in ocean in an inflatable raft, or being sent away from their families to only be robbed or killed by smugglers. Is it not so selfish and one sided that we are only looking at the job market?
There are so many examples like these, of these whispered deaths that slip through the cracks of the American stage. One may ask why our country must care about other's plights, and the answer is one that President Monroe had decided ever since 1823 with his famous doctrine (thanks Mr. Lynch!). As Americans, it is our responsibility to care for other countries. It is our responsibility as the country with so many resources to use our surplus for the better. And lastly, all of the problems will eventually affect us directly too, whether we choose to ignore it now or later.
The Keystone pipe is a pipe. It is not a life. Let us be mindful on what is important, and what is not. Let us not be lost in the stage clever politicians and the media have planned for us, and instead find in our own human compassion and empathy what issues truly matter to us.

The Vlogbrothers By Ava Harrington
Before John Green was a world renowned author, and before Hank Green was, well, still not very famous, the pair began a Youtube vlog known as the Vlogbrothers. It all began with a challenge: two brothers could not communicate for an entire year except through Youtube videos. From there, a community of over two million followers and fans -- known as “Nerdfighters” -- have tuned in to watch their weekly videos about a variety of subjects, as the brothers discuss anything from the refugee crisis in Syria to how to apologize without being a fart-bag to fiery race car disasters. The two are informative, yet witty and humorous at the same time. Both know how to strongly carry an argument and sway an audience while keeping viewers attentive and engaged. While Hank is more involved in math and sciences, being a part of other Youtube channels such as SciShow and Crash Course Psychology, John is more of a philosophical author, who has now published many well known books including The Fault in Our Stars, An Abundance of Katherines, and Paper Towns. In addition, he's also a familiar face to many Upper Schoolers, as he stars in Crash Course History.
The real draw to the Nerdfighter community, however, is just that. A community. Nerdfighters have regular meet-ups, create and sell fan merchandise on the Vlogbrother website, have serious or light hearted debates (anything from gender in society to who has better hair [it’s Hank*]), and most importantly, welcome others. While many Youtube comments are either rude, offensive, or just plain stupid, the comments on the vlogbrother channel are almost always insightful, funny, and respectful. Horoscope of the Month by Alfie
Aries ♈ ️
(March 21 - April 19)
Aries, you have been keeping yourself physically busy. Although, this quality is a good thing, remember not to overdo it. This month you will face many tasks, and you will have an urge to take responsibility of taking on more than you can handle. Remember to take time out of your day and relax.
Taurus ♉ ️
(April 20 - May 20)
This month ideas and opportunities will be given to you. You will find that you may not want to take advantage of these new ideas. You may want to cling on to your own ideas. It is important that you understand that while tenacity and a stable temperament yield reward in many endeavors, tolerance and flexibility are the best assets when it comes to personal relationships.
Gemini ♊ ️
(May 21 - June 20)
A good habit you have is to adapt to any situation they encounter. However, this month, you will face a situation where you must learn to speak with candor instead of simply repeating what others want to hear. It is also important that you keep your focus this month, Gemini. Don't let your imaginative chatter distract you from what's important.

Cancer ♋ ️
(June 21 - July 22)
Cancer, one of your good traits is that you are able to get things done through the power of emotional commitment. Not only do you aggressively work to accomplish the goals inspired by your own feelings, but you also know how to appeal to the emotions of others. Your presence has a great impact on the people surrounding you. You may feel pressure due to the amount of people that follow you, but don't be afraid when you aren't able to accomplish a goal. You are human too, and it's unhealthy to keep your emotions bottled up.
Leo ♌ ️
(July 23 - August 22)
This month, focus on what you'd like to give, rather than what you'd like to receive. You will feel the need to cling onto your pride. If you do so, use your pride to guide others. You will receive a great reward in return only if you are truly doing it for the sake of others.
Virgo ♍ ️
(August 23 - September 22)
You may feel the need to hide your vulnerability this month. To deflect attention away from yourself, you might focus on other people by praising their talents and virtues, or by criticizing faulty behavior or personal imperfection. Virgo, never be afraid to show your true colors. Imperfections are natural.
Libra ♎ ️
(September 23 - October 22)
You are someone who is fully engaged in life. You can be very literal and emotionally present. This can be a good thing, Libra, but it may be wise to pay attention to your nocturnal images this month. You might want to keep a notepad and a pen by your bed and write down whatever you may visualize. There might be an important lesson to learn from your dreams.

You may have been holding a grudge lately, or perhaps you will hold a grudge later this month. It is important to let go of that negative energy. Negative energy won't benefit you.
Sagittarius ♐ ️
(November 22 - December 21)
This month you will have the strong urge and desire to break free of the confinements of responsibility and work. However, it's not fun and games yet. You still have requirements to fulfill, Sagittarius. Don't put it off and procrastinate while you do other activities.
Capricorn ♑ ️
(December 22 - January 18)
You have been doing brilliant things Capricorn. You may have been handling more than enough tasks and situations. It's a good trait to set and fulfill goals. However, you must remember that the ends never justifies the means.
Aquarius ♒ ️
(January 20 - February 18)
You may see yourself in a bystander position this month, Aquarius. The issue doesn't involve you, but that doesn't mean you can't get involved with the issue. You must learn that society will greatly benefit when you are present in a situation.

Healthy Halloween Candy Alternatives By Emilia Sanz-Rios
Most people like halloween for the candy but get home with many stomach complaints! Here are some recipes to have a healthier Halloween (I found this somewhere else, so therefore I can't take credit for the recipes. You also don't have to read the large paragraphs to make these treats!).
Also remember this: not all of these are healthy- they are just better than store bought candies. Most of these candies are better for you than the ones you would find in supermarkets or in a candy shop.
Snickers no bake, low sugar, high protein, gluten free, vegan makes 16 bars We all love those famous candy bars. You know, the ones with peanuts, caramel and chocolate? Basically, the synonyms of pure bliss. These are made of good ingredients like protein and an option of non artificial ingredients, but you could choose to add the artificial ingredients in here as well. When you combine Homemade Candy Bars + Healthy Ingredients + Protein you get these amazingly delicious healthy Snickers bars! With a soft and chewy interior, some crunchy peanuts in every bite you take, and then a rich chocolatey shell, you know that these are some treats that you can sink your teeth into, free of guilt.

Scoop the mixture over the protein bar base and spread the super sticky matter to the edges of the pan. Refrigerate uncovered for 30 minutes to an hour.
Slice into 16 bars and place the bars on a cookie sheet. Press peanuts over the caramel (I made a single row of halved peanuts). Refrigerate while you prepare the chocolate.
Afterwards, break up the chocolate and place into a double boiler for the chocolate coating. When chocolate is melted, dip the protein bars into the chocolate with two forks. Drip o excess chocolate, then place onto the cookie sheet.
Refrigerate for ~2 hours, or until firm.
