“three layer” proposal - GESA as a part of it

typical section - extension of the park and connection between the different elements that shape and sew each level

rethinking GESA as part of a whole while as a unique piece to preserve and respect

Me tropiezo, “maldito escalón” Aquí no cabe El eco De pié, sentado o tumbado Hace frío

Habitamos. No dejan lugar a descubrir. Así, se propone un espacio que contradiga, una especie de antiespacio. Que cuestione el orden establecido para dar lugar a nuevas conductas sociales. Un espacio que suponga un lleno dentro de un vacío de libertad. Huir de lo construido dentro de lo construido.

Entro y respiro. Respiro hondo y bailo.

LONDON PUBLIC LIBRARY for ARCHMEDIUM COMPETITION

/September 2015

team: Ignacio Navarro and Ricardo Fernandez

We find ourselves in a new era in which the main protagonist is the Technological Revolution. This shares certain changing aspects with a historical fact that took place in London decades ago, the Industrial Revolution. We see this as an opportunity to think about the changes that are leading in our society when introducing the most advanced high-tech. London, as a driving force of change in the Industrial Revolution, had a hefty price tag in its society. This was reflected in Gustave Dore's engravings that show an overcrowded and expectant society of what seemed to be positive changes. The Industrial Revolution changed the perception of time, human development and public health among others. Industries were the driving force of this change during that time, and chimneys became the main background in London´s cityscape. Like this, those chimneys are seen as a way of representing the near-future change of learning and acquiring knowledge that technology is bringing to us. This is shaped in what we consider is going to be one of the most affected institutions by this change; the Library. We are experiencing a continuous dematerialization of the Library, now that books are disappearing because of this intangible technology. It is not that we consider this source negative, but in need to be used in a correct way. Technology should be a tool and not a substitute in the way of learning and performing. Today's technology, along with an overwhelming globalization, is changing the way of interaction among each other in a more radical way. If we think about how we are nowadays, we can predict that we will behave as completely passive human beings. We will have no longer relation among us when sharing knowledge and communicating. We will get to the point that being connected to a virtual reality will be the only way to perform. We are pursuing a society in which children will grow isolated from each other, always in need to be “plugged" into this virtual world that is not real. Based on this critical thinking, the LPL is represented in a way that the program is considered “timeless”, submerged in this technological revolution. The physical space itself will not have such an important role in the future library. It will even be unnecessary, since it will become a mere container of individuals performing as isolated bodies. Only what would determine the library spaces are the individuals who will be in it. The chimney represents secrecy, loneliness and isolation of individuals that hardly feel the need to be linked with others. We may be on time to remedy this future, using technology in the service of knowledge, not in detriment of this.
