To scrap $1 billion cap is irresponsible The recent call by Nationals leader Brendan Grylls for the State Government to scrap the current $1billion cap on the Royalties for Regions fund is irresponsible. There is no shortage of money with the current cap on the fund. The issue is where and how the money is being spent. Instead of spending money on Royalties for Regions advertising campaigns and other areas of waste – the money would be much more wisely spent on hard infrastructure assets that will help grow our economy, such as sealing the road from Wiluna to the Great Northern Highway and extending the State's rail network, among other things.
This can be done with the current $1billion cap; if it means cutting out some of the excesses related to the management of the fund – then so be it. It is taxpayers' money after all. And the extra money that Mr Grylls would like placed in the fund over and above the current $1billion limit should be directed towards cutting state taxes such as stamp duty and payroll tax – which will benefit all Western Australians by lowering the cost of buying a house and stimulating employment across the whole economy. Lower taxation and smaller government needs to be the theme – not the big government knows best, tax and spend mentality. Matt Eggleston

Nationwide call for businesses to boost Karratha LandCorp wants to hear from visionary development companies interested in helping deliver a new bulky goods retail precinct for Karratha. Lands Minister Brendon Grylls said LandCorp is calling for expressions of interest from the private sector Australia-wide to deliver a bulky goods retail precinct – a first for the town and an exciting opportunity for the community and businesses. “We are looking for a suitable partner, or consortia, with the capacity to join LandCorp and develop a major bulky goods complex which will be an enormous boost for the Pilbara,” Mr Grylls said. Mr Grylls said it would be a first for Karratha. “This new project will help attract new investment in the Pilbara and assist in meeting local demand in Karratha for businesses such as major white goods, hardware and electronics retail facilities as the town’s population grows. “It will also provide opportunities for existing businesses to relocate to this strategic location with great exposure.” The successful proponents will enter a partnering arrangement with LandCorp to undertake commercial land development which could include built form development. The Minister said the successful proponents would work with LandCorp for three months to progress project feasibility and initial development plans for the facility, prior to the finalisation of a commercial agreement. The EOI closes at 2pm Thursday, December 1.

The hotel owner, Venturex Resources, has temporarily closed the iconic pub whilst it carries out a feasibility study into reopening the historic Whim Creek mine nearby for a copper and zinc project. Halfway between Port Hedland and Karratha, the Whim Creek Hotel first opened its doors in 1886 and is the last-standing remnant of the original town of Whim Creek, which was founded at the time of the Pilbara’s first significant mineral discovery in 1872.

The manager of the Roebourne Visitors Centre, Ruth Ellis, says tourists have been encouraged to visit Whim Creek hotel and she hopes it reopens. “I hope it does, it would be a real shame if the company just mothballs it or it doesn’t do anything with it,” she said. “Even if they sold it and someone would pick it up,” she said. Head to pilbaraecho.com.au and have your say whether you believe it should be re-opened again and let us know what your favourite memories of the Whim Creek pub are.

POLICEWATCH By Senior Constable Newby General Information: Drink driving is a major issue for police in regional Western Australia; alcohol has contributed to several of our serious and fatal crashes here in the Pilbara. Due to this and many other reasons there have been amendments to the Road Traffic Act 1974 including higher penalties and fines for drink and drug driving offences. The amendments also include changing the Excess 0.05 limit for some drivers to zero blood alcohol content (BAC). These include drivers of heavy vehicles, drivers of buses carrying passengers, taxi
drivers and people that hold an extraordinary licence. If you would like any more details on this amendment please contact Karratha Police on 9143 7200. Community Information: Karratha Police attended over ten disturbances last week which involved domestic disputes or groups of people fighting. By the time police are called the aggression has usually escalated to a point that can no longer be controlled by the persons there. In situations like this, police try to calm everyone down and establish control of the situation and issue main aggressors with a move on notice or a 24 hour Police Order.
These disputes usually involve persons who are intoxicated and are acting in an aggressive manner towards all persons there and to police. Domestic violence occurs far too often in our town; if you are in need of help or just want to chat with someone about what steps can be taken there are services that can assist including Victim Support Service which is at the Court House phone 9185 2922, and Domestic Violence Counselling Services on 1800 812 511. If you want to talk to some one about alcohol abuse please call Alcoholics Anonymous on 9325 7528. If you need any more information on these topics please contact us at the Karratha Police Station.

November has announced cyclone season by dumping rains (the plural of more than one drop) upon us! Now’s the time to sort your plan of attack for such further encounters with the wet stuff. One option is just to love it. A second would be to go all biblical and jump on a large ship, such as the one Captain Claus Anderson from Radiance of the Seas spends his days on. A third would be to, well, let’s just see…
Rain dancing It’s wet, yes. It’s raining. The heat it leaves me, draining my brain of its fever and boy I’m a believer in clouds grey and dopey (They do not make me mopey). But rather, I gather, my heart is in a lather. I’m giddy, I’m joyful. Look out and cop an oyeful of all that elation brought by precipitation.
which towers like Noah and this will be a goer. And on this ship, floaty, you’ll sail upon that boaty as cyclones rail thunder and you can rest in slumber
Oh welcome, November! Good folks out there, remember if you get too hot now and frazzled, wiping brows now, That this is our season -the weather with a reason
or dance, drink, and rainbake a cruise would be no mis-take. But if you are onshore life in our summer’s no bore and if you are new here Or too long here and glued here,
to say now, “Hooray now! The wild air’s here to stay now!” And if it ‘comes so wet the waters rise then, you bet, just hop on a boat now, a big one with a high bow
live large, yes? And if dressed and standing in the rain, bless, strip off and get nudey! And jump about all rudey. And shout, voices straining, “God bless my bits, it’s raining

New look for Karratha Bankwest
Government of Western Australia
WA Country Health Service
By Courtney Bertling Bankwest customers at Karratha were invited to the launch of the branch’s freshly renovated office and new business centre recently. Karratha Bankwest leading manager Donnell Ingram said the launch was to celebrate the refurbishment of the office, new opening hours, new business centre and regular visit from a financial advisor. “So we thought it would be a great time to combine it all together as we have now settled into the new look of the branch,” she said. “Refurbishments were completed over two weekends; it was a little bit hectic in between, however the customers had no idea what was going on behind the scenes. “The guys they would come in on a Friday night and work all over the weekend, but it was behind the scenes that we were stepping all over everything,” she laughed. The response the team is getting from customers shows that everyone is appreciating the new look. “Everyone likes the new look; it’s fresh, open and exciting,” Donnell Ingram said. “Instead of looking like a

He said the business centre was previously located in the bank office of the retail branch, however, now the new business centre is open, out the front with its own meeting rooms. “Before it was very difficult for us to expand,” he said. “The numbers were growing, we were getting more customers and more business, now we have to space to continue that growth.”

echofood 7g of dried yeast 10g of caster sugar 190ml of lukewarm water 3 tablespoons of olive oil 200g of oo tipo flour 150 of plain flour 1 teaspoon salt
By Aoife Conway
Homemade Pizza Method In the large bowl or a stand mixer mix together the flour and salt. Combine the water, yeast, sugar and oil, and pour into the flour mixture. Mix to combine, then knead until smooth and elastic, approximately five minutes in mixer. When dough has come together, transfer to a clean bowl and cover with a clean teatowel and leave at room temperature for 45 minutes approximately, until the mix has doubled in size.
“Knock back” or push down using your fists to release air and deflate dough. Divide the dough into two equal portions, shape into balls, rest covered with a damp cloth for 30 minutes. Roll dough to desired thickness to fit a round 10” pizza tin, top with your favorite toppings and bake in a preheated oven at 180 degrees oven for 10-15minutes. Baking directly on a stone is ideal and gives a perfect crust; if you do not have a pizza stone, place the dough onto a sheet pan, before adding your toppings

Recording breaking $250,000 worth of sales The Colours of our Country Aboriginal art exhibition in Perth has generated a record-breaking $250,000 worth of sales and commissions for Pilbara artists with 95 per cent of the works exhibited snapped up by buyers and collectors. Over 245 paintings and glass artworks were sold at the recent exhibition with the income going back to the artists, their art groups and broader communities. A highlight of the fortnight-long exhibition was the official opening event on Tuesday 20 September. Over 140 guests joined Rio Tinto Iron Ore and
Australia chief executive, Sam Walsh, to celebrate the achievements and outstanding talents of the exhibiting Pilbara Aboriginal artists. A heart-felt Welcome to Country by Noongar elder Noel Nannup commenced proceedings. Chairperson of Roebourne art group Josie Samson responded on behalf of the participating artists, telling the assembled crowd of the importance strong governance and cultural leadership has within Aboriginal communities. Following a formal welcome from Mr Walsh, Minister for Indigenous Affairs Hon Peter Collier
MLC officially opened the exhibition, praising the breadth and scope of the work on show, and the skills of the artists. As has become a tradition with the Colours of our Country event, Rio Tinto donated a piece from the exhibition to the Art Gallery of Western Australia. Director Dr Stefano Carboni accepted the gift from Mr Walsh on behalf of the Gallery; ‘Blue Bells’ by Yinjaa Barni art group member Aileen Sandy. Ms Sandy was one of twelve artists able to make the 1,500km journey to Perth to attend the opening event. Their

presence gave the ‘city slickers’ in the room a true sense of the story behind these artworks. “Colours of our Country is an unfolding story,” said Mr Walsh. “It is a rare chance to see the beauty of the Pilbara landscape interpreted with vibrancy and openness, and an insight in to cultural traditions, narratives and landscapes to the artists and his or her community.”

Councillor White-Hartig said. “After World War II the day was renamed Remembrance Day to commemorate those who were killed in both world wars and today we commemorate all those who were killed or suffered in wars and conflicts.” Cr White-Hartig said the service would commence at 10.45am, at the front of the Shire of Roebourne Administration Office. “Representatives from the Autumn Club will be selling poppies from 8.30am until 10.30am on the Friday, outside Kmart at Centro Karratha and later at the service,” she said. “They will also be accepting donations, which will go towards Legacy Australia.” Members of the public are invited to lay private wreaths at the end of the official ceremony. No post-service activities are planned.
O’Donnell Griffin, the contractor undertaking the works, is progressing in Bulgarra and Millars Well. The first changeover from overhead power to underground took place on 16 August in Viveash Way and to date 118 properties in Karratha have been undergrounded. This is a major electrical project that has four stages of work:
Impact on you The external cables between the front boundary to the meter box, and along the street verge will be installed using underground drilling or open trenching. The contractor will door knock before work on private property commences. You will be notified when access into your yard is required. Please ensure that gates are unlocked and dogs securely fastened. If your switchboard is inside your house, access into your house will be required. All verges and work areas are recorded before work commences so they can be repaired to a similar standard after the work takes place. Care will be taken at all times to minimise the impact of this work on your property. However, some disruptions to verges and front gardens will occur. At the different stages of work, there may be an interruption to your power supply for up to four hours. You will be notified at least three days prior. We assure you of our commitment to carry out work with as little impact on property owners and occupiers as possible. For any enquiries please contact Horizon Power on 9159 7250

Remembrance Day marks the anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I on 11 November 1918. Roebourne Shire Council President Fiona White-Hartig said the Shire of Roebourne, in conjunction with the Karratha and Districts RSL and Pilbara Regiment, will be conducting a Remembrance Day commemoration on Friday, November 11. “Remembrance Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, continues to be commemorated in Australia and other allied countries, including New Zealand, Canada and the United States,”
The Pilbara Underground Power Project (PUPP) is a partnership between the Government of Western Australia (through Pilbara Cities) and Local Government Authorities, delivered by Horizon Power. The project aims to provide cyclone affected Northwest towns with a safe and reliable power supply, replacing ageing overhead electricity infrastructure with underground networks.

Wildlife watch:
The Larger Carpenter Bee
For your perfect
By Jenny Fox
Queensland vacation
One could imagine my surprise at finding this rather large insect buzzing up and down on the inside of my lounge room window. At first I thought it was a wasp as I had never seen such a large bee, let alone realise we do indeed get native bees this size. At first I thought it may be a foreigner or a bumblebee but after a bit of research (thanks to Google) I found out what it was, a greater carpenter bee. These bees are the largest native bees in Australia measuring 15 to 24 mm long. Interestingly they are a solitary bee, not living in a colony. Most of our native bees live alone, unlike the introduced European honey bee.

The females have a glossy black abdomen and bright yellow fur on the thorax. Males are covered uniformly with yellowy brown or olive fur. They are called carpenter bees because they cut nest burrows in soft timber such as the dead limbs of mango trees. These carpenter bees like a warm climate, and in NSW and WA they are restricted to the northern areas. Like all bees, these guys are great pollinators of some crops as well as our native fauna. We don’t get bumble bees in Australia although these carpenter bees and the large teddy bear bee are often mistaken for them. Australia has over 1,500 species of native bees.
We also have 10 species of social stingless native bees. The difference between social and solitary is the social bees have a hive with a queen and make small amounts of honey while the solitary bees live alone (as the name suggests) mate and lay their own eggs in rotten timber. The common European bee was introduced in 1822 to produce honey and has since gone feral. More info can be found on the Aussie bee website www. aussiebee.com.au Australian Bee research centre.

Taffy, a nine year old dog and kittens Milly and Molly, three pets from SAFE (Saving Animals From Euthanasia Inc), recently visited Crawford Realty’s Karratha office to promote its support of this voluntary organisation. Crawford Realty general manager Mark Pages-Oliver said the office was now assisting the administration work of SAFE in Karratha as part of its ongoing support for the organisation. “Paul Schajermann, our trust accountant, will now be providing SAFE with free support in the area of accounts and MYOB,” he said. “Many of the staff of Crawford Realty own pets and we believe SAFE is doing wonderful work in our local community to save the lives of unwanted pets and finding caring homes for them. “As a real estate company we believe it is important to support the local community and I would urge other local businesses in our community
to assist SAFE in whatever way they can.” Sue Hedley established SAFE in the Pilbara in 2003 and it now has branches throughout the state including Port Hedland, Tom Price and Kalgoorlie. Ms Heldey said SAFE currently has over 60 pets needing homes and these can be viewed at www.safe.asn.au. “One of the first pets I rescued was Taffy and he has been my personal pet for nine years,” Ms Hedley said. “Unfortunately, many other pets are not as lucky as Taffy and are in urgent need of good homes. “As a voluntary group, we exist on the support of the community and we are delighted that Crawford Realty is now providing our Karratha branch with administrative support. “This assistance will prove invaluable to SAFE.” Anyone wishing to assist the work of SAFE can contact Sue Hedley on karratha@safe.asn. au or 08 9185 4634.

Apprentice’s passion fuels success Aprel Clough is set to accomplish many great things in her career in hairdressing. Currently enrolled in Certificate III in Hairdressing at Pilbara Institute, the motivated nineteen-year-old is about to finish her qualification in only two short years. “I knew I wanted to be a hairdresser even as a child,” Aprel said. “I started colouring my hair at a very young age and my passion for hair has only increased!” Originally from NSW, Aprel, who’s a Port Hedland resident is doing her apprenticeship at the Health and Beauty Shed and is the second in command at her place of work. “I have a lot of integrity as a hairdresser,” she said. “I want to be proud of my hair creations and my goal has always been client satisfaction when I’m working at the salon.” She also added that her career in hairdressing takes first priority. “I’m a very driven individual,” she said. “And my approach to my apprenticeship is the same. “I did my best to get through it in the quickest amount of time possible, giving my utmost

We have had a busy start to our final term of the year. Swimming lessons began last week along with a wonderful incursion called “Ghana Beat My Drum”. The children enjoyed listening to stories and music from Ghana. Throughout this African journey students learnt new words, songs and dances. They also learnt of a language in which clicks are used as part of the speech and of people who still hunt and gather as part of their way of life. Jonas, the presenter, also took
time to tell, in simple terms, why he left and why he now thinks of Australia as his home. The incursion was a great addition to our cultural learning programs. The awesome Millars Well P&C organised a frightening Friday school disco last week with many of our students coming back to school dressed as all kinds of ghoulish and garish fiends. DJ Ren Ten got everyone dancing and the children participated in dancing games, the limbo and trying to compete with Miss Short’s, Mr Wheal’s and Ms Corcoran’s dance moves!

‘Bloody excellent’ Melbourne Cup Race By Courtney Bertling
• Leonie and Taylor Palmer, Mel Johnston and Viv Adams.
• Some of the members from Apex placing bets.
Melbourne Cup Day is no stranger to Australians, being titled ‘the race that stops a nation’. Each year, it is a day for bigger and better things, be it the frocks, fascinators, high heels or the separation between Dunaden and Redecaux last Tuesday. By the barest of margins, just the bob of a head or the twitch of a nostril, either one of these horses could have won. However, Dunaden took the title winning $6.2M along with the closest finish in the 151 years of the great race. Back in the Pilbara, at The Icon and the All Seasons Hotel, the crowds were quiet, patiently waiting for the judges’ decision, replaying photos of the finish waiting to see which horse had taken first place. Once the news was out there were cheers and moans coming from everyone. Locals Steve Connelly and Donna McIntosh were just few of the
people who earned a bit of cash on the day. “I thought from the way he [Dunaden] was running, I knew he would win the race,” Steve said. “It was bloody excellent! He won by a hair of a nostril.” And when asked what he would spend his winnings on, his sister Donna laughed saying he was going to be spending it on her. Another winner on the day, David Barry said he put money on Dunaden to win at the TAB and drew Americain at the work sweep so he was going for both during the race. “But when the race finished I didn’t know what to think because it was so close, but luckily the horse I backed come out on top,” he said. “The money that I won, I will be taking my wonderful fiancée out for a lovely dinner.” The All Seasons also held a fashion show after the race with Kris Moore and Marcele Jones taking out best dressed for the women and Justin Bracey and Brad Scott for the blokes.

Feteful day for Dampier Primary School By Amanada MacNich

Dampier Primary School will again host the fete of all fetes on Saturday, November 12 in an afternoon filled with fun, food, music and entertainment. There will be lots of activities for kids, including face painting and art and craft activities and there will be plenty for the bigger kids too! Fete coordinator, Gwen Stirling, said the P&C Committee was mindful of including activities for everyone this year, especially dads. There will be a car and bike display, V8 nitro racing, ropeclimbing course, heaps of sideshow activities including the giant slide and a massive auction. “We want it to be a day out with the kids,” Mrs Stirling said. “One of the things we, as a school, pride ourselves on is the community’s involvement with the school and for us this is about the larger community too.
“It is really just about having a fun family day out.” The school plans to do big things with the money raised from the day. Mrs Stirling said funds will be directed towards providing facilities for physical activities for all students by way of a “space net” and fitness track; current health and education department priorities aim to encourage children of all ages to participate in regular exercise and physical activity. Drinking water fountains, upgraded speakers for the school’s interactive whiteboards and aluminium bike racks are also on the list. The Dampier Primary School Fete starts at 4pm on Saturday, November 12 and entertainment in the evening includes Dampier Idol finalists concert as well as music by Garry Booth. There will also be an auction with a huge array of items available for bidding.

Christmas is coming, and so are the lights There’s no denying it, Christmas is coming, and with just seven weeks to go until the big fella lands on your roof looking for the chimney, it’s time to shake the tangles out of your Christmas lights and start decorating the house. Here at the Echo, home of the Karratha Christmas Lights competition, we have our own Christmas Queen, Mel Jonsson, who starts sparkling when she talks about Christmas lights. With this year’s prize money a dazzling $10,000, Mel said the 2011 sponsors have been wonderful in their generosity to the community. “We couldn’t do it without our sponsors Woodside , Shire of Roebourne, Horizon Power, Centro and Coral Coast Print and Design,” she said. “All the money that’s donated from sponsors, one hundred per cent goes back to the community. An excited Mel has declared the Christmas Lights competition open and said it is starting to roll now, with entry forms in this next week’s Echo. “Every one in Karratha and Dampier is on notice that they can enter, and we get some from Point Samson, Wickham and Roebourne, they are eligible to join in,” she said. “December is the month when things really start to happen, starting day one, when ‘lights on’ is official. “Each year it’s grown bigger and bigger… this year we anticipate 50 or so.” Mel said people put a lot of time and effort into their displays and last year’s winner has spent his prize money on new lights for this year. “It’s fierce competition out there; last year one of the entrants said that they were going to be getting Christmas lights in from the States, the ones that chime to the music,” she said.
“If they actually pull that off this year I will be really proud.” Entries close on December 7 and the judging will be done on December 10 and 11. An enthusiastic judge herself, Mel said it’s a busy time. “We try and get sponsors and staff members to come out and judge, they go to each house and rank it, then we bring all the votes together and whoever’s scored the highest is the winner,” she said. Pilbara Echo head honcho and Mel’s dearly beloved, Al Richardson, said judging is fun. “The kids will stand out on the road when they know the judging night is on and put on an extra effort to impress the judges, it really is a big affair,” he said. Mel confirmed that judging has a particular bright side. “Bribery, there’s bribery. They follow us; we’re up for bribery again this year, lollies, bring them on.” While the main judging is done by sponsors and Echo staff who want most of the lollies, the rest of the community have their say in the People’s Choice category, and people can vote on-line. “We publish the streets and encourage everybody to lodge their vote on-line. People’s Choice can win $2000,” she said. Intently planning her own decorations on their newly acquired “limited street exposure,” Mel said she’s started building her own collection of lights and decorations, but said she’s got a long way to go. “It takes years to build up those collections; mine’s tiny and I’ve already got four boxes,” she said with a sparkle in her eye. Watch this space – she’ll have a lot more than four by this time next year, it’s just as well she can’t enter the competition.

Kylah Morrison has definitely earned her spot as a hard working woman, after studying engineering at university for five years, now, as of November 1, 2011, Kylah has had her work published in a book with other writers, including authors from the internationally acclaimed book, The Secret. Kylah finished school at the end of 2001, left home three months later and headed to university where she studied engineering. “At the end of my degree I did a Masters of Engineering Management which was the best year I had a university,” she said. “Everything started to fall into place; I learnt about commercialisation of products, marketing and sales, business strategy and other fundamentals like accounting and economics. “Basically I learnt why engineers design and make products, and why some companies are more successful than others.” Since completing her studies, Kylah has worked as an engineer in the oil and gas industry offshore and onshore for Woodside, for five years. “For a long time I questioned whether doing engineering was really what I wanted to do,” she said. “Having done the Masters in

Engineering Management, I’d been given a taste of business and I loved it. “Gradually I’ve come to realise that there are always opportunities at work to get involved with things not always specific to your role. “These opportunities have really helped me better understand what aspects I do really enjoy in engineering and how I can link them in with the business needs as a whole.” Now, Kylah has started up her own business called Zest e-Biz which provides coaching for businesses wanting support with business planning, getting the most from employees and systemising processes in the workplace leading to business excellence. “Probably the hardest thing I struggled with was starting up coaching small to medium businesses in the areas of business planning and value creation,” she said. “I’ve only been going a couple of months with the majority of it being pro-bono until I get some runs on the board. “I was afraid of people questioning why I was doing something completely different to my day job. “However, after talking to a number of people in the coaching industry and people at work, I realised with the beauty of the internet I’m able
to do everything I need to do outside of work hours.” Another opportunity that has helped Kylah overcome the fear of trying something new was writing a chapter in a book launched on November 1, 2011 called Adventures in Manifesting – Success & Spirituality. “In writing my chapter, now published alongside authors from The Secret, I gained perspective of where I was at and where I want to be heading,” she said. “The book contains 30 stories from authors who describe their experiences with the art of manifesting success and spirituality. “My chapter is more about becoming aware of this and my journey towards manifesting success. “The authors come from all walks of life sharing wisdom and insight of how they each achieved their greatest desires. “The book was designed for people to find personal resonance within every chapter.” Copies can be purchased from Angus & Robertson in the Karratha Centro, or from www. zestebiz.com. There will be a book signing at Angus & Robertson on November 12 and 13 and she will also be at the markets in Millars Well this month and next.

Karratha doctor fine fellow By Courtney Bertling Karratha based GP, Dr Andrew Jamieson has earned the title of Fellow of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (FACRRM). This qualification requires three years of additional training and is renowned for the difficulty of its exams. Dr Jamieson achieved this milestone without having to leave town, thanks to the Australian Governmentfunded Remote Vocational Training Scheme. The RVTS delivers support to rural doctors so they don’t have to leave their communities to undertake professional development. “I am happy to have completed the program, which was quite academically challenging at times,” he said. “Addressing and dealing with wide ranging problems such as aeromedical retrievals, snake bites,
Indigenous health, eye injuries and mental health problems has definitely made me a better doctor.” Last year approximately 35 people Australia-wide completed the program with Dr Jamieson saying it is a relatively new thing. “I moved from South Africa six-and-a-halfyears ago and I decided to complete the program as it is uniquely Australian at this time. “No one else in the world has this qualification.” He said that he is excited to provide a medical service in remote areas like Karratha. “This qualification gives people a form of specialisation and recognition to work as an expert in medicine rural and remote areas,” he said. RVTS CEO Dr Patrick Giddings said not only does the community retain their doctor, but also they benefit from a GP who is connected to a nationwide support
network and exposed to the latest advances in rural medicine. The RVTS assists doctors practicing in some of Australia’s remotest locations, from rural farming communities to remote outstations and everything in between. The program’s annual intake is just 22 doctors, so competition for selection is spirited and only the most capable are selected.
Participation in the RVTS requires a large commitment from each doctor outside of day-to-day consulting. “Weekly after-hours teleconferences, regular peer review and travel to practical workshops are just the beginning,” Dr Giddings said. “Passing final exams is tough and requires many hours of arduous study. “I congratulate Dr Jamieson on his achievement.”
StandBy shows impact on community wellbeing By Courtney Bertling The StandBy Response Service measurably improves the health and wellbeing of people bereaved by suicide, which in turn reduces the economic burden on the Australian health system, a recent economic evaluation of the national bereaved program has revealed. The StandBy Response Service has been working in the Pilbara for the last two and a half years and coordinator for the Pilbara region, Peter Cohen said that in the last five weeks, there have been four cases of suicide in the region. The StandBy Response Service is a communitybased postvention program that provides 24-hour coordinated crisis response to assist people bereaved by suicide. The Science of Knowing, a Queensland based consultancy firm, and Griffith University were commissioned by United Synergies and the
Commonwealth Department if Health and Ageing to undertake an economic evaluation of StandBy, to identify the costs and benefits of operating the program and to determine its overall cost-effectiveness. StandBy National Manager Libby Wherrett said the results overwhelmingly confirmed StandBy was a cost-effective way to support people bereaved by suicide and actually provided a direct cost saving to society of approximately $800 per person per year, even taking into consideration the costs of operating the program. Pilbara Health Network CEO Chris Pickett said the evaluation was important to demonstrate to the Government, which funds the program, that StandBy is worth putting money into. “The Government needs to understand the cost and value that StandBy has,” he said. “Mental health is extremely difficult especially in this region as it is

Wickham and Rec Club go into round four undefeated
Round two of the Pilbara AFL Women’s 9s competition saw the Emergency Ward consolidate top sport on the ladder with a solid 30 to 18 win in a high skilled and spirited clash with the Panthers. The Ward trailed at half time and had to dig deep to catch and overhaul the Panthers unit with an attacking running final half. Tracey Ward was once again adjudged best afield while Queva Mills took out the two votes after her controlled kicking brought her team home. The Panthers were once again wonderfully led by Delores Brockman with Rhi Ware climbing high to take mark of the night and converting the goal from a tough angle. Jenna Copper was solid
throughout the match and took the final vote. The Panthers earlier dispatched Dunham’s Destroyers with Captain Daneele Dunham the standout of the match. In a sensational running and marking display Dunham pushed her team as close as she could but the Panthers were too strong holding on to take the game 60 to 36. Rhi Ware was dynamic for the two votes and Shirely Gosper once again attracted attention for her solid aerial display. The Angels fielded some bright new talent in Donna Stott and Kath O’Donnell in their match, which saw them develop a good game style and held there structures well. They were outclassed 54 to 6 by an outstanding Hard Luck and Trouble team, with Tracey Ward helping out the undermanned team and helping herself to a half dozen goals.
Tracey took out the three votes for this match as well with Storm Ferrier taking two in her first match in the shortened form, and O’Donnell in her first AFL match ever took out one vote for the Angels. Hard Luck and Trouble followed up their win with a narrow loss against Dunham’s Destroyers. Hard Luck’s captain Kyla Thomas showed why she is considered one of the highest skilled players in the Pilbara with her slick hands and clever feet combining exceptionally well with Char Joseph to move the ball forward. The two took out two votes and one vote respectively. The player of this match was once again Dunham who provided the run and drive to get here team up for this one 30 to 18. Holly Vernon was solid up front for the Destroyers and handy contributions were made by some Angels players.

• John Wheelahan, last years winner for overall heaviest mackerel with $1000 Auslec cheque • Wayne and Tom Bingham
Red, Rock and Race By Courtney Bertling Recently, Nickol Bay Speedway held their first ever Red Rock and Race event over two nights and one day, with a huge turn out to watch the drags, races and burnouts. This year the club thought they would add something else to their Bikes Night which they have had going for the past few years to help raise much needed funds for the Nickol Bay Speedway and to help continue bringing racing to the Pilbara. This certainly gave a positive response from the audience and riders, with many people travelling as far as Perth for the weekend. Nickol Bay Speedway, Dannielle Peaker said the rider’s numbers were good over the entire weekend. “We will definitely be doing it again next year, we will nut out the teething problems we had this year so next year will be even better,” she said. Kawaski bike rider, Wayne Bingham and his son Tom travelled from Perth for the weekend with their Kawaski 450 and 500, with Wayne winning all of his heats, finals and finishing top in his class. Eighteen months ago the guys moved to Perth after living in Karratha for 13 years and attending all the dirt drag events, which have been seen in
Karratha since 2005. So they were not going to miss out on the first Red Rock and Race for the Nickol bay Speedway Club. “I first started off riding in MotorX, but I got too old so I started dirt drag racing,” Wayne laughed. “Once the day got going everything went really well and everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves. “I will definitely be back next year, and hopefully the 500 that Tom rode won’t break down in the first round. “I have been to a lot of tracks over the years around Australia and this is definitely one of the best tracks.” Also travelling from Perth were some of the members of the Gypsy Joker Motorcycle Club. Gypsy Joker member and rider on the weekend, Shep won his rounds with his Harley sponsored by North West Star, scoring about eight seconds over the 200m distance. “We decided to travel up for the event to help promote the bikes and the event for the Nickol Bay Speedway Club,” he said. “It’s a family race/weekend and everyone had a lot of fun, we will definitely come back next year to see everyone and what people have to show when it comes to bikes.”

A field of 61 golfers turned out with those lucky enough to have won during the year and playing off for the cup. The rest of us had a casual hit playing Stableford. The day belonged to Casey Gray who took the honours with an awesome score of net 65. Coming in second place was Kevin Diamond net 67, in third place with a net 69 was Gary Broun, fourth with net 69 also was Bill Saw and rounding out the count in fifth with a net 70 was Wayne Martyn. For those of us that weren’t in the Monthly Mug Final the top score on the day went to Dieter Sohns with 46, Robert Ford came in second with 43. Third place went to Robert Smith with 40 and fourth went to Chris Witt who also had 40. Best gross score went to Casey Gray with a fantastic 74. Best Lady on the day was Tania Willcocks with a net 72 and the Best Veteran was Wayne Martyn. Novelties: Nearest the Pin No.3 Kevin Clark, No.8 Jo Cooper, No.11 Dot Abbott and No.16 Bill Saw. Best third shot No.4 Phil Kennedy, No.12 Bodie Broun and No.14 John Magerl. Longest put on No.18 Susanne Byrne and Longest Drive on No.1 was June Worsley and John Magerl.
We had a dead heat for the highly contested NAGA between Laurel Chadwick and Jo Cooper although there was some good footage videoed during the day, which kept us all entertained. This week’s golf event was the Monthly Mug Final, which was proudly sponsored by Coates Hire. From now on will be the Summer Competition with a fun game of Ambrose, so get together with some friends and make a team. Names in by 2pm for 2.30pm hit off. • The start of the swim leg
Start of the season underway for NBTC By Sam Griffths The first race of the Nickol Bay Triathlon Club season was held on Sunday, October 23 in near perfect conditions at the Karratha pool with 59 eager competitors in attendance. Four course lengths were on offer; a long course (600m swim, 18km cycle and 6km run), short course (300m swim, 9km cycle and 3km run), enticer course (200m swim, 6km cycle and 1.5km run) and junior event (100m swim, 3km cycle and 750m run). Spot prizes were available, including cycling gloves, biddons and power gels kindly donated by Eddie from Scott Cycles. Macie
Bennetts
led
an
impressive junior field of 20, the largest in recent times, from the gun.
Jan Gallatly pushed hard to win the veteran females long course.
Macie was not challenged, although younger brother Dylan always kept her in sight, finishing 23 seconds back.
Tania Neeson easily took the honours in the short course event suggesting a tilt at the long course is just round the corner.
Congratulations to all junior competitors and special thanks to the parents who volunteered as marshals on the day. Reigning Dampier Triathlon champion Ben Leishman displayed impressive early season form taking out the open long course male event whilst Kate Shyrock won the female open long course event after a dominant swim leg. Bevan Stirling relied on his strong run leg to win the veteran males long course and
Newcomers Rachel Leong and Brett Lasnick won the female and male open short course events respectively with Paul Vernon winning the veteran male event. A performance of note was by junior competitor Matthew Orrance who performed admirably amongst his older competitors. Full results are available on the website, nickolbaytriclub. com.
Last Friday, Karratha Amateur Swimming Club held its second time trial event of the season. Unfortunately, due to lack of lighting facilities this season, the program for each time trial night has been cut a lot shorter than previous seasons. However, with last season commencing late due to pool renovations and then being disrupted enormously by the devastating tornado that hit Karratha, this season is looking a lot more promising already. With more than 50 competitors participating in the week before’s time trials, swimmers are already displaying fantastic improvements with some enormous personal best times being achieved. This week the Machado family dominated the pool in personal best improvements, taking over a minute of their combined times, with young swimmers Erika and Yannick making enormous improvements in all strokes and more seasoned swimmer Rebecca taking almost four seconds off her 100m breaststroke time. Joining the Machado family with huge improvements, Nino Antonucci, Laken Wain, Mikaela Wilson, Finlay Moore and Keldon Wain all took more than 10 seconds off their 100m breaststroke time. Benjamin Waddington, Ross Rann, Marni Taylor, Lili Moore, Ben Collins and Allanah Baxter also showed significant improvements in the 100m event. Other promising rising stars are Jellyfish swimmers Jed Norris and Thomas Hastings, both
• Rebecca Machado and Ross Rann neck and neck in 100m breaststroke showing vast improvements, taking over 10 seconds of their personal best times. Sharks newcomer Ziggi Mccarthy shaved almost three seconds off her 50m breastroke time from last week, with Barra swimmer Sophie Waddington also doing a three second P.B. In the 50m freestyle event, Alyssa Taylor was another standout on the night, managing to slash a whopping 9.54 seconds off her time. Personal Best times were also achieved in the freestyle event by Marni Taylor, Laken Wain, Tedd Stanley, Sophie Waddington, Jacynta Felix, Isobel Norris and Georgia Munro. Training is now in full speed, with many swimmers training hard for the upcoming Pilbara Championships in Exmouth at the end of this month. With the Dolphins squad swimming 3.8km last Tuesday in less than an hour and a half and most of the Barra squad completing 3km in their Tuesday training session, more personal best times are sure to be achieved in the coming weeks.
