Karratha Police are seeking information over a series of incidents in which alcohol was stolen from two Karratha premises on March 14. Police said alcohol was stolen from the Ibis Hotel Bottle Shop and Karratha Recreation and Sports Club, both on Searipple Rd, after they were broken into between 2am and 3am. Items were also stolen from several cars parked nearby, which were also broken into and damaged. It is believed the person pictured may be able to assist with this investigation.

Anyone with information about these incidents, or who recognises the person pictured, is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. In a separate incident, police said that a man threatened staff in a Karratha video store with a knife last Monday at 8.40pm. The man had entered the Balmoral Rd store and asked to buy a movie. But when he was told the movie was available for hire and not sale, it is alleged the man brandished a knife. The staff member fled

to the rear of the store and the man left the store after taking a drink from a fridge. Karratha Police reviewed CCTV footage and passed that information on to another Karratha Police unit, which was sent to search the area for the offender. A person matching the description of the offender was located and arrested. A 29-year-old man, of no fixed address, has been charged with being armed in a way that may cause fear and fronted Karratha Magistrates Court late last week.

Pilbara voters to help shape the Senate By Ben Leahy Pilbara voters will join Western Australians in choosing from 77 candidates as they go back to the polls on April 5 for a re-run of the Senate election. The election is being held again after last September’s Senate election results were declared void when 1370 votes went missing. The re-run has the chance to reshape the Senate and impact the amount of control the Coalition Government has in the house. The Liberal Party did well in the original count, picking up three seats. A strong performance in the re-run will ensure the Coalition is less reliant on the minor parties to control the house. Labor and the Greens picked up one seat apiece in the first count and Labor will be hoping to do better this time around. The minor parties were the surprise packet of last year’s election and they will again be hoping to use the preference system to win WA seats. Australian politics expert from Murdoch University Ian Cook said that each party will try to campaign according to a number of themes. Dr Cook said that while the Coalition Government will try to refocus on issues used in last year’s federal election campaign, such as the mining and carbon taxes, the Labor Party will try to move away from federal politics. He said Labor will instead try to paint Prime Minister Tony Abbott with the same brush as WA Premier Colin Barnett. “Labor doesn’t want to focus too much on federal Labor because it introduces the carbon and mining tax into voters’ minds and it plays out negatively for them – these policies are often seen as anti Western Australia,” Dr Cook said. “But at a state level Mark McGowan did a reasonable job against Colin Barnett. “There would have been a time where you would leave Colin Barnett alone because of his popularity with the voters in the state, but I don’t think that is true anymore.”

He said Labor have already been targeting Mr Barnett with a broken promises campaign that they hope will stick to Mr Abbott also. Dr Cook said he also expects the Greens and minor parties, such as the Palmer United Party, to target regional voters. He said he expected minor parties to campaign loudly in support of schemes such as Royalties for Regions and securing a larger slice of the GST pie for WA. And the Coalition Government is clearly taking

the challenge from minor parties seriously, with the Liberal Party’s Member for Durack Melissa Price issuing a statement aimed as much at them as at Labor. “Allowing the Senate to be controlled by minor parties who will wheel-and-deal with no clear directive for Australia’s prosperity should be a concern for all Australians,” Ms Price said. “We need strong leadership in the House of Representatives and strong leadership in the Senate, which will not be achieved if the Senate continues on its current chaotic path.” Either way, it should be a fascinating battle. Photography in the Pilbara can sometimes be a solitary affair. Friends and family are not always keen to travel for hours to catch that remote desert sunrise nor are they up for endless discussions about shutter speeds. So instead, snappers from Karratha’s Red Dirt Camera Club let out all their photography talk during monthly get-togethers at the Leisureplex. Club members share photos and stories at the meetings and learn more about the art of photography. They also show the best pictures from the group’s monthly competition, in which members take photos according to a theme. But you don’t have to be an expert to take part. Red Dirt member Cate Laviron joined the club more than a year ago because she didn’t know how to use her new camera. “Tutorials on the internet are OK,” she said. “But if I was only taking photos by myself when I go on holidays I would never improve. “(The club) is good for pushing myself to take photos more often.

Shire seeks government funding to get Wickham hub off the ground

By Ben Leahy Shire of Roebourne councillors have voted to endorse an $18.5 million plan for a new community hub in Wickham. The new hub would include office and clinical space for GPs, a community hall and youth space, skate park, library, childcare centre and multipurpose space. The site would also be developed in a way that will allow future additions to be added to the hub if needed. The shire will now submit the project model to the state government and seek around $5 million in funding. It is proposed that Rio Tinto will also put $11.5 million towards the project, with the shire to contribute an additional $1.5 million and Lotterywest $1 million. Shire of Roebourne president Peter Long said the hub project would provide Wickham with important new community spaces and youth facilities. “We are currently in the process of detailed design for a similar hub in Dampier, also in partnership with Rio Tinto, and it’s clear to see how these multi-use facilities are really needed in these towns,” Cr Long said. “Building a hub allows us to create a space that is a bustling centre of activity for the community where people can meet, mingle and access important community services. “I’m hopeful that we will receive funding from the state government for this critical project for our eastern towns which, along with our partnership with Rio Tinto, will allow us to get this project off the ground.” The scope changes came about through continued design work and consultation with the eastern corridor communities. The shire chose a slightly cheaper design for the Wickham hub that cut out plans to build a ten-pin bowling centre at the hub.

Medical scheme brings more doctors to town Local medical practitioner Dr Archana Ratna recently celebrated five years’ service to the community under an initiative that aims to improve access to health services. Dr Ratna is the fifth doctor under the Medical Services Equalisation Scheme to provide five years of local service since the program began in 2006. The scheme focuses on lowering the barriers for private GPs to service the local community.

Shire of Roebourne president Peter Long said this has helped bring more doctors to the Pilbara. “Through this program we’ve seen an increase of GPs servicing our community, which has meant participating practices have been able to offer more flexible consultation services and reduce waiting times for patients,” Cr Long said. “We want to make sure we’re doing everything we can to ensure residents

have access to the same high quality health services they would expect in the metropolitan areas.” Thanks to the greater availability of doctors, the Karratha Medical Centre now provides after-hours GP appointments on weekdays until 7pm and Saturdays from noon to 4pm. Kinetic Health also provides after-hours services on Wednesdays and Thursdays until 8pm and Saturdays until 1pm.

15-year wait for Banjima native title win By Ben Leahy The Banjima people from the Central Pilbara had their native title rights recognised by the Federal Court on March 11 after first lodging their claim more than 15 years ago. The delay in reaching a negotiated outcome on the 1998 native title claim led the WA Government and Banjima people to enter into litigation in 2011.

But now with the successful Federal Court decision, the Banjima native title rights cover a 10,200 sq km area extending west towards Tom Price and east towards Newman. It also includes areas around Karijini National Park and the asbestos mining town of Wittenoom. “We have fought for this for a long time, so … (it) is very rewarding,” said Banjima elder Maitland Parker.

“Our elders have taught us all of the things we needed to get our determination. They have taught us our law, language and culture, which we will pass on (to) our young people.” Banjima country is home to many sacred sites, including ancient stone engravings. Gorges, such as Wittenoom Gorge, also have spiritual significance and form part of Banjima cultural storylines.

It is also at the heart of BHP Billiton’s Pilbara iron ore operations, while major projects by Rio Tinto, Hancock Prospecting and Fortescue Metals Group are also in Banjima country. Banjima people are in the final stages of negotiating land use agreements with BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto over the iron ore projects. Banjima elders and community members gathered at Karijini on

March 11 to mark the Federal Court decision. Federal Court judge Justice Michael Barker said he regretted how long it took for the Banjima people to secure their claim. “A number of senior members of the Banjima claim group have not lived to see (today) … but I am sure the memory of these elders … and their spirit is very much with all Banjima people present here,” Justice Barker said.

Ngarla people win landmark native title case By Ben Leahy The Pilbara’s Ngarla people have won a landmark High Court case that found their native title rights are not extinguished by mining leases. This means that the Ngarla people will now be able to exercise their native title rights over all areas of their traditional lands, including the Mt Goldsworthy mining leases, once all mining projects are finished. The Mt Goldsworthy leases had originally been excluded from a 2007 Ngarla native title agreement, despite being located on traditional lands 150km east of Port Hedland. This was due to the state government arguing that mining leases permanently extinguished native title rights. The Yamatji Marlpa Aboriginal Corporation represented the Ngarla people and its chief executive Simon Hawkins said native title rights did not interfere with mining leases. “The courts had been clear all along that the native title rights did not prevent mining companies from doing anything they were

lawfully allowed to do under their mineral leases,” Mr Hawkins said. “(So) we are uncertain as to why the WA government asked the court to rule that the native title must be permanently extinguished, even though this makes no difference to mining leases in that country.” The rights recognised under the 2007 Ngarla native title agreement include the right to access and camp on Ngarla lands, to take flora, fauna and other non-mineral resources, to engage in ritual and to care for sites of significance. The Ngarla people went back to court in 2009 to extend these rights to include the Mt Goldsworthy leases once all mining projects are finished. These rights were granted under the March 12 High Court ruling, which could now have ramifications for other native title claims in the Pilbara. “(With this ruling), after mining has finished, the Ngarla people can fully exercise all their native title rights through the whole area again,” Mr Hawkins said. “It was very disappointing that the WA government challenged that position.”

Murdoch University researchers who calculated the carbon footprint of a typical WA mine site village have found they can be made significantly greener without any effect on the bottom line. Lead researcher and PhD candidate David Goodfield conducted a detailed examination of a mining camp in WA’s mid-west. He found that the overall carbon footprint varied according to the potential life of the camp. For a camp with a lifespan of five years, it amounted to about 2600 tonnes of CO2-e (carbon dioxide equivalent). “That includes the carbon emissions from constructing the camp and buildings, the electricity to run the camp, deliver goods, pump water, deal with waste and so on,” Mr Goodfield said “It equates to at least 16 tonnes per camp resident, which is on top of the carbon they are responsible for while at home. “If you extrapolate that across the nation, the carbon saving is worth thinking about, considering the number of fly-in fly-out workers there are (in) remote camps such as this one.” The study, funded by the Australian Research Council’s Linkage program, found that applying energy efficiency and behaviour-change measures was only likely to reduce the carbon footprint by 6 per cent. Mr Goodfield found that a much greater reduction could be made by switching the village’s energy supply to renewable sources. “The camp I examined is powered by the generator at the mine itself, with an 8km spur line running the electricity between the two points,” he said. “That spur line cost approximately $2 million to construct. For the same cost, they could have installed a renewable energy system, which could have paid for itself in as little as three-anda-half years.” Mr Goodfield said any excess power could be redirected to the town’s power supply, possibly offsetting costs further, while making a positive contribution to the community. “At the end of the village’s life, solar panels and wind turbines can simply be packed up for use at the next location,” he said. “Or a company could choose to leave a lasting legacy in the town by leaving the infrastructure there.” While this one particular method may not make a mine site village completely carbon neutral, with some good planning, Mr Goodfield said it can be achieved. “These initiatives need to be implemented at the design level, which can be very costeffective,” he said. Mr Goodfield said mine site camps frequently have a short lifespan due to the volatility of the resource markets. “This means that ways to reduce the carbon footprint are usually overlooked in the early planning and design stage,” he said “However, the continually falling price of solar and rise of gas and diesel costs means that further investigation is warranted. “What company could argue with attractive payback periods and return on investment while reducing their impact on the environment?”

Karratha BMX rides a wave of success By Ben Leahy There were plenty of thrills and – luckily – few spills as about 50 Karratha kids took the chance to give BMX a go at a come-and-try day last weekend. With the new riders ranging from tiny tots in Disney-themed stack hats to older kids on handme-down bikes, Karratha BMX Club president Ian Glover was delighted with the turnout. He now hopes that the excitement of whizzing around the berms and jumps on what is one of Western Australia’s most technical tracks will lead to at least 30 of the new riders joining up for the regular season races, which begin this weekend. “BMX racing is one of the most exciting and fastest growing sports in Australia,” Mr Glover said. “It is a very exhilarating feeling for the girls and boys lining up at the top of the ramp,

knowing they are going to race and pedal as hard they can. “It is a great social atmosphere too. The average race only takes around a minute and so that means they have time to interact and chat with their friends.” The come-and-try day followed on from a successful few years for BMX riding and the club. BMX has been growing thanks to its reputation as a fast and exciting family sport that is open to boys, girls and their parents. It is also riding on a high due to its inclusion in the Olympics since 2008 and the success of Australian world champion riders Sam Willoughby and Caroline Buchanan. The international success is even flowing to the grassroots Karratha juniors. With the help of elite riders, such as Daniel Sprague and

ex-Olympian Luke Madill, who travel to Karratha three to four times a year to train local juniors, the club has grown to be a force in the Western Australia state titles. “We have one of the largest clubs in Australia, with more than 100 active riders each year,” Mr Glover said. “At the 2013 state titles, we had 27 riders travel 1700km down to Kalgoorlie, and we ended up with 18 (top-three finishes) and a couple of number one riders in the state.” “We’ve got some very highly skilled junior riders here that I think will (one day) be on the world stage.” For 12-year-old club member Jackson Tatham, that world stage might not be far away. He is heading to the National Championships in Victoria in May and hopes to earn a place in the world titles, which will be held in Rotterdam in the Netherlands this July.

Mr Glover said this success and the atmosphere of the club had also helped bring strong corporate support, with Rio Tinto sponsoring rider training courses and Onsite and Titan donating equipment to maintain the track. He hopes the club will continue to grow. New members wishing to join up need to buy a club membership, full-face helmet and protective gear to cover the whole body, as well as do a few modifications to their bikes. And it is not just for kids – there are several parents also signed up for club races. But the older folks need to be prepared for the humiliation that comes with trying 100 times to learn a trick that their kids can often pick up in one go, Mr Glover warned. “It’s fair to say that lot of mums and dads are letting their kids do the riding for them out there,” he said.

leSS meat, more PlantS It’s Meat Free Week from March 24-30, so this is the best time to discuss the alwayscontroversial topic of meat consumption. I want to start off by saying yes, meat is rich in a highly absorbable form of key nutrients, such as iron and B12, and also that I am not 100 per cent vegetarian. I am OK with meat consumption, but I also support vegetarianism or veganism for certain people, depending on their health status. As with anything I condone nutritionally, it is about quantity and quality, and this is a major issue as far as meat is concerned. Let’s discuss quantity first. Meat consumption is on the increase globally. It is projected that production will sky rocket from 275 million tonnes in 2008 to 465 million tonnes by 2050. But it is not just an increase in the world’s population that is driving greater meat consumption. We are also eating more per person. In 1961 each person consumed about 22kg of meat a year, but this had risen to 40kg a person by 2007. And there are direct links between this increase in meat consumption and an increase in rates of chronic disease. For example, excess meat consumption can increase the

risk of prostate or breast cancer by as much as 40 per cent. Bowel Cancer Australia also states that changes in diet, largely due to the reduction of meat, could reduce the incidence of bowel cancer by 75 per cent. So it’s clear to see a simple change such as reducing the amount of meat you eat can greatly impact on you and your family’s health. So how do you eat less meat? Vegetarian day I am a big believer in having one meat-free day each week. This is taking off around the world with one initiative called Meatless Mondays – get recipe ideas and tips at meatlessmonday.com. SerVing Size It’s clear that serving sizes of meat have increased in recent years. But a safe and practical serving of meat is a portion the size of your palm (fingers not included) and a serving size of seafood is a portion the size of your palm and fingers. red meat It has the strongest link to bowel cancer of any meat. Bowel Cancer Australia states that people should eat a maximum of three serves a week and if

you have a family history of this cancer, you need to take this guideline seriously. Plan ProteinS Believe it or not, you can get protein from plants. Some plants, such as quinoa, tofu and tempeh, are even complete proteins, meaning that they contain all of the amino acids. Other great options include legumes (beans, lentils and chickpeas), nuts, seeds and whole grains. There are plenty of recipes using these foods on the internet. meet half way If going completely vegetarian freaks you out, then begin by halving the amount of meat in a dish and topping it up with some of the options above. I am researching why only a small number of women are employed in the Western Australian mining industry. I am seeking women who are currently working in the Western Australian iron ore mining industry who are willing to participate in a survey. Participants may be working under residential, fly-in-fly-out (FIFO), drive-in-drive-out (DIDO), remote or other working arrangements, in any role. Triathletes go off road this weekend By Ben Leahy The Nickol Bay Triathlon Club is holding its first off road triathlon based out of the Karratha Leisureplex tomorrow morning. Registrations open at 6.30am, with the race kicking off at 7.30am

and raced over three distances. These include the long course, consisting of a 600m pool swim, 9.6km mountain bike ride and 6km trail run, and a short course over a 300m swim, 9.6km mountain bike ride and 3km trail run. Kids will tackle a 100m

swim as well as a short trail ride and run. The club asks that competitors have their membership band or money as they will be required to pay an entry fee into the Leisureplex pool of $5.50 for adults, $3.90 for kids $3.90 and $1 for spectators.

Mountain bikers get set for new season the club will be enforcing strict registration times. Day members must have completed their registration 30 minutes before the race start and members must be registered 15 minutes before the start. The club committee is also looking for more event organisers, with four rounds of the season still without a race organiser. Indoor sports kick off in Newman It may be still be hot outside but that hasn’t stopped Newman sports lovers from jumping into team sports – indoors, that is. East Pilbara residents have been flocking to the new indoor program at the Newman Recreation Centre with more than 120 people signed up to be a part of one of the different sports’ competition. The sports on offer include men’s and mixed basketball and indoor soccer. Ten basketball teams – six men’s and four mixed – have been created with the first games kicking off last Monday. The five-a-side Futsal competition got under way last Wednesday. “It’s fantastic to see such overwhelming support for the new indoor sporting competitions at Newman Recreation Centre,” Shire of East Pilbara chief executive officer Allen Cooper said. “We are pleased that fitness and team participation is alive and well in our community.” If you would like to participate in the indoor sporting competitions at the Newman Recreation Centre call 9177 8075 for more information.

Kids roll up for skate clinics By Ben Leahy More than 300 Karratha and Dampier kids climbed onto skateboards earlier this month at a series of clinics in schools and skate parks in the two towns. Skateboarding Australia and the Shire of Roebourne ran four skate park clinics and visited seven primary and secondary schools to promote active living. Perth skater James Whineray ran the clinics and said the turnout of kids was one of the best he had seen in regional Western Australia. “We are trying to get the kids out on the skateboards, get them active, get them social and showing respect to each other,” he said. “Skateboarding is a very inclusive and easy sport to get involved in. “Our main idea in doing these clinics is to reach out to kids who

have never skated before to give them a chance to (it) try out.” “And so it is exciting that we had probably 150 kids to our (four skate park) clinics and 300400 throughout the week once the schools are included.” Whineray also said while his main goal was to work with newcomers to the sport, he was still impressed by the local talent. “There are a couple of great kids in the Pilbara, but what they are missing here are the older skaters, around 19 years of age, who they can look up to. “Those older kids tend to have left (the Pilbara) for the city. “So it is often inspirational for the talented kids when we show up because they don’t normally have anyone new to skate with apart from a few mates. “So we show them some moves or advise them on how to do this or that and it is motivating for them to want to skate more.”

Whineray said because the shire and in particular The Youth Shed staff did such a good job promoting the clinics, he is confident Skateboarding Australia will gain more funding from the federal government. “The more kids we pull to the clinics, the more funding we get to go to regions and because this has been such a success, we’ll definitely be back,” he said. That not only gives youngsters the chance to brush up on their skills ahead of the next clinics – some teachers might also want to hone their techniques. “Every school has got that cool schoolteacher who is like, ‘Watch this kids, I used to skate, I used to do this’,” Whineray said with a laugh. “We had one phys-ed teacher at the high school claiming he used to skate and trying a kick flip. But I think he might be full of it.”
