echo top shots Pilbara photographer Geoff Ellis is clearly a red dust local. On a recent trip up the Kimberley’s Gibb River Rd, he was shocked to see vegetation. “I was absolutely amazed by how green the grass was! I pictured the Kimberley differently,” Geoff wrote on his Geoffrey Ellis Photography Facebook page. He was also attracted to the brooding quality of the Kimberley clouds. “I had to pull over to take this shot,” he wrote. “The clouds were so dramatic and the look of the windmill really made this image for me. The sunrays were definitely a bonus.” Fans of Geoff’s might also soon be seeing a new style of photos from him after he was given an old Swedish-made Hasselblad 500EL/M camera. But first he has to work out how to use it. “(Luckily) it came with a massive instruction manual, and there’s always the internet to lend a hand as well,” he wrote.

Rio Tinto expansion to create 760 new jobs “
Rio Tinto projects around the Pilbara. Photos by Christian Sprogoe Photography.
Rio Tinto is set to increase production at two of its Pilbara iron ore operations in an expansion that is expected to create more than 760 new jobs in the region. Premier and State Development Minister Colin Barnett said the expansion at the West Angelas mine from production of 29 million tonnes a year to up to 35 million was a sign of confidence in the Pilbara resources sector. “This expansion is expected to extend the mine’s life by approximately 13 years and will involve a $680 million capital investment by Rio Tinto and its Robe River joint venture partners,” Mr Barnett said. The West Angelas expansion is expected to create 290 jobs during construction and will increase the ongoing operations workforce at the mine by 200 workers to a total of 1300. Rio Tinto is also expected to spend about $200 million increasing production at their Western Turner Syncline mine from 25 million tonnes a year to 30 million. “This new development will create around 240 new jobs during construction, and an additional 30 workers will be required for the operations workforce,” the Premier said. “These projects are part of Rio Tinto’s plans to increase its annual iron ore production in the Pilbara towards 360 million tonnes and demonstrate the ongoing commitment of the company and its Robe River joint venture partners to their WA operations.” Both projects will also require the construction of infrastructure, including new haul and access roads, and communications and waste facilities. These developments come as continued strong demand from China and other existing markets saw iron ore retain its title as the state’s most valuable export, with sales of $68 billion last year.

“RELAX BY THE POOL”
When Wickham resident Ben McGuire fires up his 1973 Ford F100 in August, he’ll have an even bigger goal in mind than simply making it in one piece from Sydney to Perth in the Variety WA National Bash. He’ll also be aiming to have raised enough money for the children with disabilities and serious illnesses that Variety helps, to be ranked in the event’s top 10 fundraisers. Having raised $53,500 in his three previous Variety Bashes, Mr McGuire will again be holding a series of fundraisers in the Pilbara this year, including a concert by popular WA singer-songwriter Chris Matthews in Wickham next month. But taking part in the Bash from August 17-30, which goes through towns such as Broken Hill, Ceduna and Kalgoorlie, is not just about supporting a good cause for him. He also shows up year after year because he “absolutely loves” driving through the Outback. “We always take to the rough stuff and leave the bitumen for the caravaners,” he said. “We often end up on stations and going through parts of Australia which most people don’t see. It’s always an adventure!” The Bash is great way to get more involved in the Wickham community as well, he said. Having lived in the Pilbara for nine years and been a long-serving member of the Wickham volunteer fire brigade, he did his first Variety Bash in 2011 with fellow firefighters.
The fireys spent hours doing up an old 1968 Bedford fire truck to drive in the Bash and attracted plenty of support from Wickham residents and businesses along the way. The next year, Mr McGuire bought his F100 and continued to fundraise in Wickham under the Hot Wheels Racing team name. And amazingly, in the more than 7000km he has driven, he hasn’t had a flat tyre yet. “(Although) last year I had a wheel bearing let go, which was a bit of drama,” Mr McGuire said. “This year I’m going to make sure everything is Bash-worthy and spot on mechanically.” The final attraction that draws Mr McGuire to the Bash is the people and crazy cars that enter it. “There are some very colourful characters, absolutely,” he said. “That is what makes the Bash, the people that are on it. We all mix really well.” And it is the great socialising on offer that has us guessing that Mr McGuire is expecting to be worn out by more than just the driving. “It is gonna be a big one, stretching over 14 days, so I’m going to be well and truly buggered by the end of it,” he said. Mr McGuire is also planning another concert in Wickham in May. For more information on the fundraising gigs, visit facebook. com/Car302VarietyWaBash. Dogged musher pushes on By Ben Leahy If you’ve been having a tough fortnight, spare a thought for Karratha’s Christian Turner in Alaska. When the Echo went to print last week, he had spent the past 11 days on a dog sled competing in the Iditarod adventure race and was still more than 250km from the finish. Turner is only the second Australian to take part in the Iditarod, which is known as the Last Great Race because its competitors run 16-team dogsleds across 1600km of snow-covered wilderness. The catch this year is that parts of the trail have had no snow, leading even veteran competitors to describe the conditions as the worst they’ve ever seen. This left Turner lucky to escape serious injury on one particulary treacherous patch early in the race. “I was coming down (the trail) … and there was a stump right in the middle,” he said during a pit stop. “I was on the brake and it just ripped out the whole bottom of my sled. “And once your brake’s gone, you can’t really stop, so I hit a tree, and then the line (linking the dogs to the sled) just snapped.” The crash left Turner contemplating whether he should hit the button on his emergency help beacon and exit the race.
But with his dog team racing on down the trail without him, he soon set off in pursuit, catching them after about a mile when their lines became jumbled. Then with some running repairs made to the sled, he set off again. “I’m bruised and beaten but honestly it could be a lot worse than it is,” he said. “I went past many teams that scratched with broken legs – I think I went past three people with broken legs – it was carnage out there.” Turner’s partner and Karratha resident Sarah Dionne said she has been “pulling her hair out” with worry watching his progress via a GPS tracker on the race’s website. But given that Turner has spent five years preparing and $10,000 in entering the race, she is not surprised to see him continue on in the event. “He is so determined to get through it, he put so much effort into training for this,” she said. Turner is still hoping to finish in the Iditarod’s top 20. His mentor in the sport, Alaskan Dallas Seavey, has already crossed the line in first place. Visit iditarod.com to track Turner’s progress in the race. You can also see a video interview with him during the event via tinyurl.com/mjcw3y3 or learn more about his adventure by reading the Echo’s story on him from last year at pilbaraecho.com.au.

Scientists hope to tag world’s most famous whale shark Perth-based scientists have launched a campaign to raise $25,000 for whale shark research as part of the Sculpture By the Sea exhibition running in the city this month. To support the researchers from Murdoch University, local artists Olivia Samec and James Moe created a solar-powered artwork replicating the unique spot pattern seen on Stumpy, the world’s most famous whale shark. “Stumpy is one of many whale sharks who make an annual trip to North West WA, much to the delight of tourists and locals,” said Murdoch University researcher Brad Norman, who is also the director of Fremantlebased whale shark conservation group ECOCEAN.
“Whale sharks are Western Australia’s official marine emblem, but as a threatened species, there’s still so much we don’t know about them.” Stumpy is named after his short tail and scientists hope to use the funds raised to tag him during his next annual visit to Ningaloo Reef. The cutting-edge technology will feed information back about his annual migration path, the depths he swims to and the ocean temperatures he experiences. “An on-animal video camera will allow us to see what Stumpy sees as he travels through the ocean,” Mr Norman said. “We may even be able to identify important breeding
habitats and learn how whale sharks attract a mate. “All of these things are still not known to science, but are crucial to conserving this threatened species.” The research will also help determine whether whale sharks change their natural behaviours when humans swim with them. “Anyone can make a difference to whale shark conservation, by giving as little as $5,” Mr Norman said. “Anyone who takes part (in the fundraising campaign) has a chance to win a swim with a whale shark at Ningaloo.” Those wishing to donate can learn more about the project at whaleshark.org.au.

By Ben Leahy You would expect that wearing your hair in a mohawk and goatee and sporting distinctive tattoos would make you an easy man to identify. Yet the identity of the man pictured here has remained a mystery after police put out a call to speak with him in January. They wish to talk to him because they believe he can help them in their inquiries into a series of burglaries in Karratha. The burglaries occurred at a transport company in Cowle Rd in the light industrial area between November 4 and December 10 during which numerous items were stolen. The man is described as being 25 to 35 years of age and of a medium build. He has a mohawk haircut, a goatee beard and tattoos on both arms and on one or both lower legs. Police would also like to speak to a second man, who is described as fair skinned, between 25 and 35 years old, of slim build with a short pony tail and an earring in his left ear.
Anyone who recognises the man or who has further information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Onslow major land release to create 220 housing lots By Ben Leahy Onslow’s first major land release in 20 years will result in 220 new housing lots going on sale in the town half way through this year. The development is expected to ease Onslow’s housing prices, which have been on the rise since Chevron began construction of the Wheatstone liquefied natural gas project 12km west of the town. The project is expected to drive the town’s population up from about 700 to 2200 in the next three years. WA Premier Colin Barnett said the new housing lots will give residents working outside the resources sector affordable housing options. “Chevron Australia and its joint venture participants are constructing one of Australia’s largest liquefied natural gas developments,” Mr Barnett said.
“Wheatstone and other resources projects are creating thousands of jobs in the area, but have also increased pressure on existing housing stock in Onslow. “This agreement will help ease pressure and ensure that small businesses and locals have access to suitable accommodation.” The state government was able to secure a site for the new development after Chevron agreed to sell some of the land it owned in Onslow. Chevron will also buy 50 lots and a 9ha site once land is released in the new housing estate. The Wheatstone project is expected to create more than 6500 direct and indirect jobs during its construction and operation phases. Lots in the new estate are expected to be released for sale by state government body LandCorp in the middle of the year.
Hedland harbour pilots and tug boat drivers can now use advanced simulators to practice guiding their vessels around the town’s port without leaving shore. The Port Hedland Port Authority last week announced an agreement to use engineering consultancy HR Wallingford’s marine simulator facility in Fremantle. HR Wallingford’s facility includes a vessel traffic services simulator as well as six simulators that mimic the bridge controls of different vessels. These simulators will enable port staff to rehearse day-to-day and emergency procedures as well as help them to practise managing the vast amount of traffic visiting the harbour daily. PHPA general manager of operations Captain John Finch said the simulators would improve staff training. “This facility will enable our marine operations team to train within a world-

leading simulation facility and to safely enhance our operational performance,” Captain Finch said. “The facility will also allow the PHPA to undertake more thorough assessments of towage requirements and the designs of future marine facilities at the port.” The agreement with HR Wallingford comes as the port continues to increase the quantity of goods it exports. The PHPA’s latest statistics show a 39 per cent increase in goods being exported and
imported through the port for the month of February, compared to the previous year. The February imports and exports totalled 28.4 million tonnes, compared to 20.4 million tonnes last February. The PHPA’s multiuser export docks also recorded increased usage, with a total February throughput of 1.3 million tonnes, a 69 per cent increase on the previous year. Figures for this financial year so far show total throughput at 230.7 million tonnes, a 29 per cent increase.

Retail and services workers have begun moving into South Hedland following the completion of the first stage of the Osprey Key Workers Village affordable housing development. The village was designed to provide cheaper housing options for workers who are not employed in the resources industry and who are generally unable to afford the high rents charged in Hedland. Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said the 12ha site will eventually include 293 dwellings and will help to bring more small businesses and services to town. “The availability of affordable
housing options at the key workers village enables employers to attract and retain the staff they need and helps build and maintain a sustainable community,” Mr Redman said. “There are a lot of workers in the Pilbara who provide an invaluable service and they deserve an opportunity to remain in their local community if they wish.” The key workers village is located inside the larger Osprey Estate development that will also boost South Hedland housing stocks. The 165ha Osprey Estate is being constructed in stages but will eventually include 366 residential lots, public spaces and a primary school.

High-use loos in need of a scrub By Ben Leahy We are not sure if Karratha and Dampier residents have been eating more curries lately, but the Dampier and Tambrey ovals public toilets are due to be renovated in the coming weeks as a result of “high use”. Both public toilets will be temporarily closed as the Shire of Roebourne adds new taps, doors and toilets and generally upgrades the facilities. “Our public toilets are well utilised by community and sporting groups across the Shire, and it’s important that we have facilities that appropriately cater for their high use,” shire president Peter Long said. The works are expected to be finished by the end of the month, with people wanting to use the Dampier toilets directed to the nearby Dampier Pavillion toilets in the meantime. One toilet will remain operational throughout the works at Tambrey Oval. “We know improving some of the basic facilities around our towns is a high priority for the community, so we’re working hard this year to deliver a higher level of grass-roots services and improved community infrastructure like public toilets,” Cr Long said. “We’ll (soon) be looking at other public toilets across the shire including Dodd Court Park, Hearson’s Cove, Karratha Cemetery, Roebourne and Wickham Cemetery, John’s Creek, Point Samson foreshore and Honeymoon Cove.” This announcement is sure to bowl voters over.

We like to think that we breed them tough in Outback Australia and Karratha lad Jack McEwan is no exception. The 24-year-old recently completed his Australian Army recruit training at the Army Recruit Training Centre Kapooka in NSW. And after a march out performance in which 100 new recruits paraded past their proud parents and friends, Jack was recognised as an elite graduate when he was presented with the Fittest Soldier award. Parents Abner and Shelley were on hand at last December’s ceremony to see the mayor of Wagga Wagga present Jack with his award. “(We) were very thrilled and
“
surprised to see that Jack stepped forward to be one of the three recruits to receive an award,” mum Shelly said. “He has always wanted to join the army to follow in his father Abner’s footsteps.” Abner had been conscripted into the army on National Service duty during the Vietnam War and found himself in Singapore in 1972 with his bags packed and just three days away from flying off to join the war. It was then the Whitlam Government was elected and brought Abner and the rest of Australia’s troops home. Son Jack is now aiming to join his dad’s former unit, the Sixth Battalion of The Royal Australian Regiment, and eventually become a member of the Army’s elite Commando Regiment.

Miners see WA as best investment By Ben Leahy
Most of us view our home as our most valuable asset. However, our most valuable asset is actually our ability to continue to earn an income into the future. This is why it is a good idea for most people to take out income protection insurance. For instance, think about what would happen if you get seriously injured or ill tomorrow. How long would you be able to continue paying the mortgage, putting food on the table or funding your children’s education? n how much cover is enough? This depends on your personal circumstances. Income protection insurance is a back-up plan and kicks in when something happens to you and you are unable to work for several months or years. Insurance companies will then pay you a percentage of your income. The recommended maximum level of income protection insurance is generally around 75 per cent of your gross income. However, you should be sure you take out enough cover to protect the amount it costs to maintain your lifestyle and your future financial goals, minus the potential income your partner can earn. You should also factor in your current savings. n is cover through my superannuation adequate? Many of us now have income protection through our superannuation funds. However, these often have a number of limitations, including: They only cover base salaries and do not cover bonuses, allowances and entitlements. They have 90 day waiting periods and will only start paying you benefits once you have been off work for more than 90 days. They have a two-year limit so that the benefits payments they provide will end after two-years even if you cannot return to work. n income protection premiums are tax deductible All premiums are fully tax deductible so if you are on the highest marginal tax rate then the government will effectively pay 45 per cent of the cost for you. Global mining companies have rated WA as the world’s most attractive investment destination ahead of provinces and states in Canada and the US, according to a new survey. With a score of 85.3 out of a possible 100 in the Investment Attractiveness Index in the Fraser Institute Survey of Mining Companies, WA ranked number one in the world over Nevada (84.2) and Newfoundland and Labrador (81.3). WA’s Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Marmion said he was keen to keep WA at the top of the survey results. “These positive results reinforce that WA has what it takes to be globally competitive, but we know our work is far from done, and it is important not to be complacent,” Mr Marmion said. “Increasing competition for global capital means that without the right policies, companies will simply look elsewhere to develop resource projects. “For this reason I am particularly pleased to see comments by an exploration company president identifying the state’s
new Mining Rehabilitation Fund as ‘exemplary policy’. “The state also received encouraging comments in regard to managing native title approvals.” WA also ranked second in the world in the Best Practices Mineral Potential Index and sixth in the Policy Perception Index. It was WA’s results in these two categories that led to it topping the Investment Attractiveness Index. WA and Nevada (0.82) also finished equal second behind Alaska (0.83) in the Best Practices Mineral Potential Index, which ranks a region’s mineral potential with exploration investment potential, independent of policy restrictions. The Northern Territory was the next best ranked Australian state or territory in the Investment Attractiveness Index, coming in at 17th with a score of 74.7, followed by South Australia in 20th (73.8) and Queensland in 21st (73.5). South Australia was also ranked 11th in the world (82.9) in the Policy Perception Index with the Northern Territory coming 13th (81.8).

Roy Hill mine now under construction
Construction has started on the NPI facility. Photo by Darryl Peroni.
By Ben Leahy Construction firm Brookfield Multiplex has begun work on a $73 million maintenance and support facility at the Roy Hill mine. The non-processing infrastructure (NPI) facility is being built to service a fleet of up to 142 pieces of equipment that will be used on the mine site, located approximately 115km north of Newman. It will include boilermaker and vehicle workshops and a waste water treatment facility. Brookfield Multiplex WA regional managing director Chris Palandri said the precinct will be the “engine room” providing essential services to the mine. “Because the mine is situated in such a remote region – about 100km

from the nearest town – it’s imperative that provisions for the maintenance of vehicles … is readily available on site,” he said. “The fleet service and repair facilities will ensure efficient transport of product and personnel across the mine, while the administration buildings include training rooms, medical services and storage to help staff safely complete their work.” Brookfield Multiplex will complete the project in three stages with the first stage expected to be finished by the second quarter of this year. “Roy Hill is focused (on exporting) its first ore in September 2015, so it’s all hands on deck from our team to complete all of our contracted work by early next year,” Mr Palandri said.

Neomad comic creator sets AG EXTREME LASERE T YOUTH SHED!!
wife Chynna are set to leave the Pilbara – or at least, that is the plan. Stu will fly from Perth’s Comic-Con at the end of this month to Switzerland to exhibit original artworks from his solo series called Nawlz before taking up an artist’s residency in Greenland. Yet, Roebourne won’t be too far from his mind. “We’ll probably keep coming back for the rest of our lives to catch up with
everyone and to see how all the young people grow up,” Stu said. After three years living in the town and working on multiple projects, it will be hard for Stu to permanently walk away from his legacy in the region. As part of the team behind non-profit group Big hART’s Yijala Yala Project he has worked with Roebourne kids and adults to create video games, music videos and comics.

Roebourne’s Love Punks and Satellite Sisters are heading to Perth’s ComicCon this month to launch Book 3 of the Neomad comic series that has attracted attention around Australia and even the globe. The Neomad books follow the Love Punks and Satellite Sisters as they attempt to act as guardians for the country around
Roebourne by following clues and advice from their Elders. With characters based on real-life 7 to 14-year-old Roebourne youngsters, the comics, which originally appeared as iPad apps but have now been launched in print, also include cultural stories from local indigenous groups. However, with the series now finished, award-winning artist Stu Campbell and his

off to draw new adventures appearing in a music video to confidently acting in a theatre production in front of thousands of people. They have even gone to Canberra to meet former Prime Minister Julia Gillard and to South Korea for a comic convention. But perhaps the biggest stage is still coming, with Stu in talks with the ABC to create an animated TV series
about the Love Punks and Satellite Sisters. With 24-episode animated series costing up to $7 million, discussions are still only in their early days, but should the series go ahead Stu said he would like to return to the Pilbara to work on it. In the meantime, there is his exhibition in Switzerland to attend, then a trip to Greenland, where he will create a comic about a world poisoned by radiation. After that he has a project in Kenya to plan, and the last two episodes of his Nawlz comic series to complete – a series that he is famous for within comic circles. Even so, it seems likely that he will be drawn back to the Pilbara sooner or later.

Heritage award nominations Dampier resident Dr Ken Mulvaney and Roebourne local Tyson Mowarin have been nominated in the finals of this year’s Western Australian Heritage awards. Since the 1980s, Dr Mulvaney has been working to protect the estimated one million pieces of rock art on the Burrup Peninsula and Dampier Archipelago, which many people believe should be World
Heritage-listed because of their unique value. He has also worked as a cultural specialist for Rio Tinto for the past 10 years and was consequently nominated in “outstanding contribution to heritage by a professional in the heritage industry” category. Ngarluma man Tyson Mowarin, and his company Weeriana Street Media, was nominated for The Professor
David Dolan Award, which recognises new businesses, organisations or individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to conservation, promotion and understanding of cultural heritage. Tyson has completed many projects often focused around transferring indigenous knowledge and culture onto digital formats, such as iPad and iPhone apps.

Marine wildlife guide updated
A handy guide to identifying North West marine wildlife has been expanded to include details about sea turtles and other key species. Launching the latest edition of the guide last week, Environment Minister Albert Jacob said it was available as a durable, waterproof booklet for boaters and as an online download. “This is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in Western Australia’s remarkable marine wildlife,” Mr Jacob said. “The new publication includes added pages about nesting and hatching turtles, estuarine crocodiles and the red-tailed tropicbird. “This adds to existing material on whales, dolphins, fish and birdlife found in marine waters from Shark Bay Marine Park to the Northern Territory border. “A map of WA’s marine parks
and reserves has also been updated to reflect new and proposed marine park areas being created as part of the state government’s $81.5 million Kimberley Science and Conservation Strategy.” Produced by the Department of Parks and Wildlife, with financial support from ExxonMobil Australia, the identification guide replaces a popular version published in 2011. The Minister said the booklet provided important information about significant or threatened marine fauna and ways the public could help conserve marine life. “Visitation to our North West continues to increase with a broader understanding of the region’s beauty and unique natural environment,” he said. “The guide helps raise awareness of the North West’s marine values and wildlife and appropriate behaviour by boaters and fishers.”

“
(Yoga) can help improve mental health, creativity and happiness and just generally make people feel better about the world around them.
”
Pilbara Dental Care By Courtney Zohs Why do I teach yoga? Because it makes you feel incredible from the inside out. Yoga means union in Sanskrit, and it is an ancient method for developing awareness and control of the mind and body. It can help improve mental health, creativity and happiness and just generally make people feel better about the world around them. Many people feel that by practising yoga they can connect with their “true selves”. Your true self is a non-judging part of you that is not concerned with what you look like, how much money you earn
or what possessions you own. Nor does it judge those around you. When you are connected to your true self, you feel a deep knowing – a feeling of contentment with the world around you. To help participants in yoga classes connect with their inner selves, I not only teach the stretching poses, but also focus on breathing so that you can become aware of the present moment. This makes yoga a great way to help people get past emotional pain or the mental judgments that their minds carry around with them. Yoga does this by teaching us to let go of these mental blocks
that do not serve our purpose in life. If we don’t let go of these outlooks or judgments, they can take over our lives until our minds are constantly racing, and we forget the stillness and joy that lies deep inside. Having a calm mind and healthy body also helps us perform better in all our other daily activities. It doesn’t matter if you are into fitness and sports, reading and writing, arts and music or pursuing a demanding career, the benefits of yoga can help you maintain optimum performance and focus. This is highly noticeable in physical sports where the
increased flexibility and healthy muscles produced by yoga enables the body to perform better and recover faster. In my next two columns, I’ll talk about how yoga helps during pregnancy and then I will dig deeper into the benefits of meditation. If you are interested in trying yoga for yourself, I teach classes every day of the week except Saturday. These include general yoga classes, meditation for individuals and businesses and prenatal and mums and bubs courses. This month, my sixweek beginner yoga class and new mums and bubs courses kick off, with bookings
essential for both classes. Karratha Yoga and Walkabout Yoga also offer great classes in Karratha, if you find my timings do not suit. If you’d like more information or details of class times, call Courtney Zohs on 0427 133 307 or email courtneyzohs@ hotmail.com.

Bosom buddies By Ben Leahy Karratha ladies at the International Women’s Day dinner last weekend really did come from all corners of the globe.
Yet, despite being born in more than 20 countries, they were still able to find common ground in three issues of great concern to women everywhere – yummy food, bras and breast cancer. Tackling the issue of tasty food first, the night kicked off with a buffet featuring everything from curries to pavlova as the ladies cooked authentic Thai, Filipino, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Pakistani and Croatian dishes. The women then set about raising awareness for breast cancer by decorating bras in colourful and perky patterns that would make Madonna blush. Judy Wright from the Pilbara Multicultural Association, which organised the night, said it was a chance to honour the achievements of women and make a difference in a fun way.
“Women around the world want peace, equal opportunity and empowerment and this day reminds us to continue to take on leadership roles and show the way,” she said. “And as Karratha is such a melting pot, with women from 20 different countries here tonight, it is also a great chance to introduce the women to other cultures and show them that we are all here for each other.” To help share their cultures, some of the women spoke about the traditional costumes they came dressed in, including an African robe called a bubu, salwar kameez from India and cheong sam from China. Towards the end of the Shire of Roebourne-sponsored night, prizes were also awarded to the best-decorated bras. It was a tough decision for the judges, given the artistic ways they were adorned with smiley faces, condoms and moustaches. Ms Wright hopes the bras gain a second lease of life when they are worn by walkers and joggers taking part in Karratha’s Mother’s Day Classic fun run

held later this year to support breast cancer research. With 60 women from diverse backgrounds attending the Women’s Day dinner, it continued what has been a busy start to the year for the Pilbara Multicultural Association. In February, the group held a Chinese New Year event featuring performances by traditional Chinese dancers and kung fu martial artists that was watched by around 400 locals. A similar crowd is expected for the association’s free Harmony Day event on March 22 at St Luke’s College gym. Harmony Day will again feature authentic food from around the world as well as traditional dances and performances by multicultural groups. The association is also holding cooking classes, with a class in Thai cooking held last Friday and an Indian cooking class planned for the next fortnight. Need help with Immigration? Free visa assessment
Many people don’t realize that they have options to stay in Australia – often as a permanent resident. Being a migrant myself, I understand the difficulties involved in moving to a new country. I have been living and working in WA as an Australian registered migration agent for over 10 years and have assisted several thousand people to obtain temporary and permanent residence visas. My commitment to you is that I will give you a clear assessment of your visa options and whether you have a good chance of success. If I don’t think your application will succeed I will tell you this up-front. My firm specializes in Permanent Residence visas such as Employer Nomination (186), Regional Sponsored Migration (187), General Skilled (189/190) as well as Temporary work (457) and Partner Visas. If you are interested in understanding your visa options, please give me a call

Bluewater Tackle Exmouth Fishing Report By Jenni Gates We’ve been having great weather lately, but the forecast for the next short while is not so flash. Hopefully, the weather will revert to light winds and calm seas soon, because we are expecting more than 100 boats on the water for Exmouth’s two major fishing tournaments in the next fortnight. This includes Gamex, Western Australia’s premier tournament, which in recent years has become recognised world-wide and is building up a reputation as an event that should not be missed by any avid angler travelling the world to take part in fishing tournaments. The fishing on offer during Gamex can be diverse, exciting, intense, challenging, rewarding and frustrating. We are very lucky, though, to have such a large range of options so close to shore. We are also very lucky to have had such amazing results over the years. When you compare the event to other tournaments around the globe in terms of the numbers of fish tagged and records broken, it really does shine. Other events in Australia and overseas have hundreds of boats enter and see just a few fish tagged for the whole event. But in one year, the Exmouth Game Fishing Club had 40 boats targeting billfish, and they tagged 446 fish during the event.
Ben Knight caught a long-nosed emperor off Long Island last week.
The majority of the fish that year were small black marlin, but you can also get large blacks, blues, striped marlin, sailfish and broadbill swordfish. The other interesting thing to note is that all the species targeted during Gamex can also be caught year-round. The statistics about how many fish are caught in events like Gamex are also really useful in showing how healthy the marine life is off our coast. Next week’s fishing report will have all the results from the Australian International Billfish Tournament, which is the three-day tag and release event before Gamex. If you want to learn more about this event and Gamex, which begins the following week, drop in to the clubhouse at the marina.
Speaking of catching great fish, skipper Ross Newton from Reel Teaser has added another to his boat’s tally when he last week tagged two broadbill in one night. For regular fishers, the reef fishing has also been relatively good of late with good catches of mixed species, including reds in the mid-water depths, spanglies in the shallows and rubys in the deep. Squid has been the preferred bait option, while some anglers have had success using jigs instead. Jigs have certainly been working well on trout in the gulf. Many local fishers have also been catching squid lately, especially off Bundegi. This squid action has been a bonus for people fishing from small dinghies out from the ramp.

To have seven men’s and four women’s teams compete in this inaugural season has been fantastic ... It’s been great to see the community really get behind this competition.
Men’s MVP Dougie Wally.
The Regulators and MADS teams took out the men’s and women’s Roebourne basketball titles in front of a crowd of cheering locals last week. In the women’s division, MADS (mothers, aunties, daughters, sisters) took top honours at the Roebourne Basketball Centre with a comfortable 50-36 victory over the Snooks. MADS were strong contenders throughout the season and came into the final full of confidence after a tough semi against Muraguga. Snooks, by contrast, had surged into the final after finishing fourth during the regular season. But they couldn’t quite bring that lateseason form all the way and despite trying hard, were unable to match it with MADS. Courtney McKay was named most valuable player for the women’s competition. In the men’s division, consistent performers the Regulators defeated Villagers 38-35 in a tight battle that remained in the balance until the final siren. The Regulators had entered the final as favourites after beating Roebourne in the semi-final, but were surprised by the fight shown by the experienced Villagers team. Dougie Wally was MVP for the men’s competition. V Swans regional manager Angela Doyle said she was overwhelmed by the positive response from Roebourne residents, with up to 250 people players and spectators taking part each week. “To have seven men’s and four women’s teams compete in this inaugural season has been fantastic,” Doyle said. “There’s been no shortage of volunteers either, with all games being refereed and scored by community members. “It’s been great to see the community really get behind this competition.” Support from V Swans and the Department of Communities played a key role in this year’s competition, and it is hoped that further support will enable it to be held again next year.

Pilbara boys make finals at Winmar Carnival By Ben Leahy Indigenous Aussie Rules footballers from the Pilbara fell just of short of making the grand final against the state’s best juniors in the Nicky Winmar Carnival in Perth from March1-2. After two wins and one loss in the early rounds, the Pilbara V Swans team played Claremont in the carnival’s preliminary final for the chance to make the decider. But despite the Pilbara boys putting their opponents under great pressure with hard chases and tackles, Claremont eventually claimed the victory in a hard-fought match. The result is a great achievement for the Pilbara boys, who are all 15 and under. They were up against high-quality opposition, with 13 Western Australian city and country teams and more than 300 indigenous boys and girls taking part in the tournament. The carnival is also an important part of the elite programs that can help young indigenous boys follow their dreams of one day playing in the AFL. Mitchell Jones is one such Pilbara boy to put his name forward as a future star after being named the team’s best player at the carnival, while Chase Rye was also a standout as runnerup best player. In addition to kicking the Sherrin around, the boys also had free medical screenings and health check-ups and took part in educational workshops about better nutrition and career paths.
Try out new sports in Karratha and Hedland By Ben Leahy Karratha and Hedland kids have the chance to try out new sports for free at exhibition nights to be held in both towns in the coming fortnight. The Karratha Sports Expo will be held at Bulgarra Oval on March 21, with children able to take part in eight sports, including Aussie Rules, basketball, golf, tee ball, hockey, netball, rugby league and soccer. During the three-hour event, kids will spend 15 minutes per sport playing games and doing drills.
Hedland’s Have a Try Night will take place at the Marie Marland Reserve on March 28 with mini clinics being run in Aussie Rules, squash, netball, golf, softball, soccer and rugby league. Parents are required to register their children before both events. The Karratha’s Futureclubs Junior Community Sports Expo is at Bulgarra Oval from 4.307.30pm. Please contact Sam King on 9186 8555 for more information. Hedland’s Have a Try Night is at Marie Marland Reserve on March 28 from 5-7pm, call 9158 9686 for more details.

Referees needed! Karratha’s junior basketball competition urgently needs more referees to call its Thursday night games. Referees are paid $20 a game with training and support provided. New refs will be asked to pick up the whistle for games from Under-14s to Under-18s games starting from 5pm each Thursday. Sens an email to juniorkarratha basketball@ gmail.com for more detailstails.

Competition to reward netball volunteers By Ben Leahy
Australian Diamonds netball player Kimberlee Green and her mum.
K 23
North West netballers have the chance to give back to local volunteers by nominating them for the Telstra Netball Hero award. The national award recognises people who dedicate their time to support netball at a community level, such as coaches, score keepers, ankle-strappers and other volunteers. If a WA person wins the national award, they receive a $1000 grant for their local team as well as a VIP trip to Perth to attend the State Team Gala Dinner, which includes two nights’ accommodation and a day spa voucher. The best entry from WA will win a $500
grant for their local team as well as a Samsung Galaxy Tab and signed netball. Telstra National Hero ambassador and Australian Diamonds player Kimberlee Green nominated her mum for the award because she had given her the mental belief to make it in the sport. “Mum’s success as an Olympic swimmer gave me the inspiration and drive to succeed in my sporting endeavours and she was always there to provide emotional support which is so important,” she said. To nominate a Telstra National Hero or to read more about Kimberlee and her mum, go to facebook.com/telstranetball. Entries close on June 9 with the winner to be revealed August 21.

The girls Under-12s 200m medley relay team of Micah Rogers, Grace Keogh, Isobel Norris and Aariane Apletree then continued the good work with a bronze medal. Jed Norris, 8, won two medals at his first Country Pennants meet, including silver for the 50m backstroke and bronze in the 50m breaststroke. Bella Dew, 8, also swam extremely well at her first major competition clocking an impressive time of 55.99sec for the 50m freestyle. Darcy Gray, 9, smashed his 50m butterfly personal best out of the water, recording a 53.39. He also knocked 3.66 seconds off his 50m freestyle, going under 40 seconds for the first time with a 39.36. Karratha Swim Club members have come home with a bag of medals after taking on the best country swimmers in the state during the Labour Day long weekend earlier this month. The club took 21 swimmers aged 8 to 46 to the annual Country Pennants Championships, held this year in wheatbelt town York from March 1-2. Karratha Swim Club competed in A-Division against much larger teams from Albany, Bunbury, Mandurah, Narrogin and Peel. Just making A-Division was a big achievement, as 30 swim clubs, competing in five divisions, attend the meet each year. Karratha Swim Club got off to a great start right from the word go when Isabella Bennett, 13, Caitlyn Marshall, 16, Aariane Apletree, 11, and Macie Bennetts, 14, came fourth in the women’s open 200m medley relay.
second in the 50m freestyle and butterfly and third in the 50m breaststroke. Johnson Murray, 12, won gold in the 50m backstroke posting a new personal best time of 36.82. He also took silver in the 50m butterfly and bronze in the 50m freestyle. Breaststroker Grace Keogh swam extraordinarily well in the 50m breaststroke, clocking a new personal best of 40.66sec and posting the sixth fastest 50m breaststroke time of the meet. Isabella Bennet clocked a new 100m freestyle PB, shaving 1.59 seconds off her previous time. Brooke Rogers took 1.72 seconds off her 50m backstroke to clock a new time of 41.40. Micah Rogers also took an awesome 3.79 seconds off her 100m butterfly to record a personal best of 1min35.90sec. Eight-year-old Emma Wooldridge impressed with
massive PBs in her backstroke and freestyle races, taking 4.84 seconds off her 50m backstroke and 5.63 off her 50m freestyle. Mark Wooldridge was not to be outdone by his sister, posting a 3.49sec PB for 100m freestyle and an impressive 33.47 for 50m butterfly. Veteran swimmer Tony Aleckson competed in the 50m freestyle event, posting a sub-30second time of 29.92. Ty Aleckson won a bronze medal in the 50m breaststroke to go under 50 seconds for the first time, touching the wall in 49.50sec. Kyle Aleckson took 3.49 seconds off his 100m breaststroke to record a new personal best of 1.37.94. Kyle also took 3.28 seconds off his 100m freestyle, stopping the clock at 1min16.35sec. Isobel Norris took 0.83 seconds off her 50m freestyle time.
Senior swimmer Asher Johnson also swam well, with a PB for 50 butterfly. Jacynta Felix swam fantastically, doing a new time of 35.72 in her 50m butterfly and taking 2.54 seconds off her 100m freestyle, coming in at 1min11.80sec. Senior swimmer Macie Bennetts continued her good form in the 50m and 100m butterfly events, clocking one of the fastest times of the meet in both events. The boys Under-14s freestyle relay team of Johnson Murray, Kyle Aleckson, Matthew Boyko and Mark Wooldridge took centre stage to claim a medal in their event and have the entire Karratha team up on their feet cheering. It was a brilliant effort from the boys, with Mark bringing it home and only just pipping Bunbury for third place in a time of 2min8.50sec.

Triathlon action from last year.
By Ben Leahy A big field of 24 Karratha triathletes set out from the Dampier Palms last Sunday to tackle race five of the Nickol Bay Triathlon Club series. With 11 athletes lining up in the club’s long-course distance, John Robertson and Tania Neeson set fast times across the 600m swim, 18km bike leg and 6km run course to be the first men and women home. John was more than a minute faster than second-placed Paul Vernon with race four winner Peter O’Neil finishing third. Tania was extremely fast over the course as she built a fourminute gap over race four winner Gail Greensill, who came home in second place. In the short course, raced over a 400m swim, 12km ride and 3km run, Nick Muller used a strong bike leg
to peg back time lost in the swim leg and be first man across the finish line ahead of second-placed Kenny McGonnell. Holly Vernon backed up from a win in race four to again be the first woman home in the short course ahead of Janyce Crawford. Amelia Greensill was the first home in the shorter distance Enticer race, designed for newcomers to triathlon, with juniors Blair Stedman and Nathaniel Greensill finishing close behind after stepping up from the junior division. Sophia Stedman took out the junior division for Under-12s. Race six is up next, on March 23, and it will be an off-road event with competitors trading their road bikes in for mountain bikes as they hit the dirt.
