The word ‘warm’ took on a whole new meaning when Kane Otto captured this picture while heading out the Red Dog Gorge. “Family and friends around town have a Facebook page setup up for a sharing photos as we all like taking pictures, with a monthly theme,” he said. “The theme for the month was “Warm” so this it what I came up with; thinking outside the box. “You would be surprised, a fair few people thought I actually cooked the egg on the road.” Kane used a Nikon D7000 with a 14mm wideangle lens

Kmart thanks wishing tree donations

Dear Editor We are writing to thank the residents of the Pilbara for their support of our Wishing Tree Appeal launch at Kmart Karratha on November 9, 2011. The event was an opportunity to celebrate the commencement of the 24th annual Kmart Wishing Tree appeal, which collects gifts for people who would otherwise go without at Christmas. Gifts donated at our store are collected and distributed to people in need by our charity partner, The Salvation Army. We are thrilled with the response the Appeal has received so far and hopeful that we’ll be able to collect more than last year’s gift tally of 600 gifts between now and Christmas Eve. A big thank you to the staff at Retravision for their annual donations.

Who stole the Anchovy Flats sign? By Courtney Bertling Many people around the town have been asking lately, “Where is the Anchovy Flats sign?” Well we have an answer. After much speculation by locals thinking Main Roads and their contractors just “got rid of it” we can report that is not the case; it is however a mystery who stole the much-loved Anchovy Flats sign. The Dampier Highway construction began in April, and the works along the causeway, where the sign was located, commenced in early October. The sign was removed soon after by Main Roads contractor Highway-Works Albem Joint Venture. It was placed against a gas bund, adjacent to the original location but clear from the work area with the intention of reinstalling it not far from its original location. “Because of the salt environment the sign was not in a good condition and the poles were heavily corroded,” Main Roads project manager for the Dampier Highway Duplication Kugan Kugananthan said. “This was stolen in mid-October; around similar time period, the contractor lost two pumps dewatering the salt water along the alignment in the same vicinity.” Main Roads public affairs manager Dean Roberts said the sign was taken down by the contractor and was to be re-instated after the road works, but has been stolen. “If the sign is not found or returned, the contractor will replace it,” he said. However, rumour has it that the man behind the making of Anchovy Flats sign (from the very beginning) has a new sign ready to be put up after the road works are finished. So don’t worry, either way, Karratha and Dampier will get their sign back.

• Rock Santa and Dahne Dray’s plaque halfway between Karratha and Roebourne

Rock on Santa, it’s Christmas time By Courtney Bertling

Every year around this time Santa will appear on the North West Coastal Highway halfway between Karratha and Roebourne, freshly painted and ready to bring some cheer to drivers. Those who haven’t been living in the region long may not know the history of Rock Santa and how important he is to the community. It all started back in the 1970s when Dahne and Tony Dray were travelling and noticed a painted Santa in a paddock near Broken Hill. It was then that Dahne decided she was going to create her own Santa. So when the Drays moved to Wickham 13 years ago, they went searching for a perfect rock to paint a Santa. Dahne was a well-respected nurse at the Wickham Hospital at the time, and every year would paint the same rock with a Santa head, and decorate the surrounding trees with tinsel. However, when she became sick and wasn’t up to the drive and decorating, Tony would paint the rock. Unfortunately Dahne died after a fight with breast cancer about three years ago and since then Tony and close friends have continued the tradition, with a plaque dedicated to Dahne at the site. Tony also moved this August and this year the tradition has been passed onto close friends of the Dray family. “It is so nice to know that Rock Santa is appreciated by so many people,” Mr Dray said. “I had no idea it had an effect on people, and to know my wife’s memory is living on is so great.” Now Rock Santa is back for another year!

Here is what some locals have had to say about Rock Santa and the tradition. Wendy Page – “It’s important to keep the tradition alive because besides it being a remembrance for a lovely lady, it’s also a reminder to us all that we do live in a different and harsh environment that is unique to the rest of Australia and Rock Santa expresses that uniqueness. In my opinion it’s not officially Christmas until he makes his appearance.” Stacey Oliver – “I love that rock Santa! We had to stop there the other day cause Rylan had to say hello to him. Who ever does him and the tinsel in the tree make the festivities even more special.” Amber O’Niell – “I have him marked on my GPS... He is special because he shows the true spirit of Christmas... To do something selflessly and without recognition to bring pleasure to others... Kind of like the sharks and monster in the salt flats... It’s just pure community spirit.” Teghan Palmer – “Rock Santa has been around since before I was born. When my sister and I were kids our parents would take us to add an ornament on the tree and leave some treats for Santa and his reindeer for when they come to visit rock Santa. It’s kind of cool that someone makes the effort to keep the tradition going all this time.” Alice Vincent – “That Santa unites the Pilbara at Christmas time. Whether you live in Dampier, Karratha, Roebourne, Wickham etc., we all shared that Santa and that sense of humour when we drive past.” Fran Cavasin – “All I know is it doesn’t feel like Christmas is near until the tinsel is in that tree and the little Santa is watching everyone drive past. We love it as it is in the true character of the Pilbara uniqueness.”

Baynton West estate is looking much cleaner after the combined efforts of 47 builders and community volunteers and the Karratha Amateur Swim Club is $4,200 richer. Just short of two hours last Saturday, the team collected around 30 cubic metres of litter from drains, vacant lots and adjacent bushland. A team from local building contractor SMC Building, plus a bobcat and 8-tonne truck, also helped out by cleaning up five separate illegal dumping sites from the bush behind Baynton. An estimated two tonnes of waste was removed; among this was a box full of used needles. Through the Shire of Roebourne’s Bucks for Bags program ($6.00 per bag) and additional contribution from Pindan ($1.00 per bag), CARE raised $4,200 for the Karratha Amateur Swim Club. This will go a long way to helping the club travel to and participate in a swim meet at Collie, in southwest WA, next year. CARE member Dan Pedersen said the builders who were involved in the day’s clean up got a clear picture of the volume and extent of the litter let loose from construction sites around the estate. “It is not until you have your nose buried down a drainage channel or in the bush that you really see just how much litter is hidden amongst the undergrowth,” he said. “We also hope the clean-up has inspired some of the builders to change their current waste management practice simple things like covering skip bins when not in use, daily housekeeping and removing loose packaging from deliveries. “In the meantime, we will be working with the Shire and our Council early in the New Year to ensure the local laws that govern waste management on building sites are tightened up.” Mr Pedersen said that in regards to the tough new laws recently been passed through State Parliament, increasing fines for those who commit an illegal dumping offense now being a maximum penalty of $62,000, Karratha CARE Group welcomes these tough new penalties. “And we hope that it is effective in deterring potential offenders,” he said. In 12 months, CARE has collected a grand total of 2,700 bags of rubbish from 21 separate cleanup locations in the Shire, generating more than $20,000.

The Pilbara Poet

by Elise Batchelor

No matter how many times I tell my three year old that the Pilbara is only likely to get snow during the next ice age, or in a parallel universe, or when the proverbial freezes over, she continues to ask when it’s going to arrive. Maybe you’ve got the answer. I mean, if anywhere in the world can make crazy stuff happen, surely it’s here?!

Frosty Whatdya mean Karratha? Or…grrr… not Newman too?! Not getting’ me to Panna Or Para-what? Paraburdoo! Get stuffed, have to pay me, An awful lot for sure, Cause you’re not getting me to Wickham Or Samson or Roebourne, what’s more. I’m on the tightest schedule, You know I am the man? I’m sure that you do realise That heat’s not in my plan. So nup. That’s a no to Hedo. A no to Port South. A no to outback Warralong And Jigalong – read my mouth! So… that’s what happened at Christmas, When Santa outsourced himself And subcontracted all his talents, Reindeer, wife and elf. You see, he’d had a big night out At an early Christmas party And done his back with a big fair whack And boompf! Weren’t feeling hearty.

POLICEWATCH By Senior Constable Newby General Information:

“I do not want to give this up, My duty to mankind, But alas, I’ve sent out forms for Application, if you mind.” Just like one bloke he’d wrangled For, well, double the overtime rates A friend of a cousin who had a friend Who was friends with someone’s mate, So, the north west heat of WA Got stuck with a bloke named Frosty Who was, funnily enough, with a carrot nose stuck And in scarves looked rather bossy I know, a snowman really sucks For delivering to the desert So up in the greatest north north west They prayed for, (what else?) a blizzard. And lordy be on Christmas Eve With Santa workers compo The god or gods or angels or stars Must have thought they’d just gone bonkers, that 30 000 hot sweaty folk

Who all loved cyclones and sun Were still praying hard on the 24th For a fierce snow storm to come. And lo and behold on Christmas Day It was snowing in the Pilbara skies And Frosty did his job for Santa Claus And we all ate hot mince pies.

Christmas holidays are approaching and if you have chosen to go away over this period then please read on and take some steps to keep burglars away from your home. We all know to lock our doors and windows when we leave our house but if you are going for a long period of time there are some other precautions you can take to keep your house safe. Ensure all doors and windows are securely locked, preferably with deadlocks and keyed window locks; Let your neighbours know you will be away and ask them to watch out for visitors and collect all your mail; Cancel all deliveries such as newspapers; Consider installing automatic timing devices for lights and electrical appliances such as radios and televisions; Give your house keys to a trusted friend or neighbour rather than hiding them outside your home; Be sure to notify the key holder when you return. This is especially important if you return home early; Give your neighbour or friend your contact address and telephone number; Consider asking your neighbour to park a car in your driveway; Your answering machine message should simply say that you are unable to come to the phone; Consider leaving a pair of old work boots by the front door to give the impression that someone is home. Lock up garden tools and ladders which might be used to enter your home. Turn down the ringing volume on your telephone. Go to www.nhw.wa.gov.au or visit Karratha Police Station and fill out the Going Away Form.

100m tonnes Stay indoors during red alert and they’re halfway there

This cyclone season, the Shire of Roebourne and FESA are together calling on the community to stay indoors during a Red Alert. Roebourne Shire Council President Fiona White-Hartig said each year it is common to see people outside their homes and often driving during a Red Alert. “During a Red Alert you need to go to shelter immediately and stay there until the All Clear with Caution is given,” Councillor White-Hartig said. “An All Clear with Caution is issued as soon as emergency crews have had the opportunity to inspect the community and take care of any hazards. FESA Regional Director John Newman said it was vital that people stayed indoors until local authorities have had the opportunity to make our communities safe. “The sooner we can do the rounds and clear any dangers, the sooner the All Clear with Caution can be given,” Mr Newman said. “However, this message seems to fall on deaf ears. All too often we encounter people on the roads and this only serves to slow us down.” “If you live in a low-lying area near the coast, you need to plan where you will go if you are advised to evacuate due to a storm surge threat,” he said. For more information about cyclone preparedness visit www.fesa.wa.gov.au or www. roebourne.wa.gov.au.

Rio Tinto first sold iron ore to China way back in 1973, and the Bao-HI joint venture is one of two such partnerships we have forged since then, delivering hundreds of millions of tonnes into the world’s fastest growing and largest steel industry.”

Family centre opening soon Karratha’s $10.1 million Pam Buchanan Family Centre reached a significant milestone last week with a ceremony to mark the practical completion of the facility. Roebourne Shire President Fiona White-Hartig said the flagship project was just weeks away from opening to the public. “Practical completion means the building is structurally complete, work will now accelerate to fit-out the centre with equipment and furniture ready for opening next month,” Cr White-Hartig said. “It’s been amazing to see this facility come to life, from a concept on paper to a spectacular building that will provide such important services for families. “It is a credit to Pindan, who have constructed the building, CODA, the appointed architects, and the project management team from the Shire who together have delivered this project on time and under budget. “The Pam Buchanan Family Centre has been uniquely designed with vibrant colour and artwork that will appeal to young children. Draw ‘n’ Learn about Christmas By Courtney Bertling

K

Draw ‘n’ Learn helps children learn and write through its well planned drawing lessons in a creative as well as fun-filled atmosphere. Each lesson has a bit of educational information about the topic it covers and that increases general awareness. The lesson plan includes different titles kids love to draw and learn about. Lately, the group have been learning and drawing characters of Christmas like a snowman, Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer and most recently, Santa Claus. Jordi Perry has been drawing with Draw ‘n’ Learn since she was four and said her favourite thing about Christmas is when she goes to sleep and when she wakes up there are presents under the tree. “I really want a locket for Christmas so I can put a picture and Santa and me in there,” Jordi

Perry said. Ashliegh Richardson started drawing with Draw ‘n’ Learn last term and said she enjoys the classes as she gets to learn how to draw different animals. “My favourite thing we have learnt to draw since learning about Christmas would be the snowman,” she said. “My favourite thing about Christmas is opening presents and the Christmas spirit.” Hari Manikandan has been a part of Draw ‘n’ Learn for the past three terms and said he loves everything about the classes. “My favourite things to draw for Christmas is Rudolph,” he said. “And my favourite thing about Christmas is decorating the Christmas tree; I really hope I get Play Dough for Christmas.” All enquiries, phone the Karratha Family Centre on 9144 1740 or email admin@ karrathafamilycentre.com.au

Local students explore uni life Fifty-five year nine students from the Pilbara have been exploring university life at The University of Western Australia this week. During the Year 9 immersion experience, a three-day camp organised by Aspire UWA, students from Hedland Senior High School, Karratha SHS, Newman SHS, St Luke’s College and Tom Price SHS will take part in activities across a variety of subjects. The students were selected by their schools to be involved in the camp based on their

desire and potential to go to university. Pilbara schools currently have one of WA’s lowest transfer rates (14.2 per cent) from school to university. All five secondary schools have partnered with Aspire UWA to raise aspirations for higher education. The program encourages students to consider university as an option and allows them to discover the benefits and opportunities life can offer when you go to university. Aspire

through a Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations grant and in-kind support from the University. The students have been participating in a study skills session, examine rumen fluid under a microscope, learn how rocks and minerals are used in everyday life and act on a Shakespearean stage. They have also experienced some of Perth’s attractions with a trip to Perth Zoo, ten-pin bowling, a shopping excursion and participating in theatre sports.

After a sell out show at the Karratha Tavern earlier this year, Timmy Trumpet was set to return for an even bigger show, and he did. Last weekend, Timmy was back with all new mixes and his trumpet. He is not just a horn-blowing computer DJ, Timmy set out and blew his audience away yet again. Timmy had the crowd screaming before he even stepped on stage. “I haven’t even had an Emu Export yet, I don’t feel right,” he laughed before going on stage. He was hoping he wouldn’t have to be escorted by security after the gig like the last time he played in Karratha.

“The response last time was amazing, I never expected people to go that crazy,” he said. “I had never heard of Karratha, it was a small venue but being an entertainer we feed off the response of the crowd and they were chanting ‘play one more’ for ten minutes, that doesn’t happen every show, and I even had to be escorted out by security which has never happened before.” For Timmy, he loves his trumpet and loves how hard his parents pushed him to play as a child, even bribing him most of the time. “My Dad and Granddad played the trumpet and they actually bribed me to play the trumpet from a very young age of four,” he laughed. “There was no Nintendo 64 until I had practiced the

Students help at Seniors Party By Courtney Bertling Santa called in to the Shire of Roebourne Seniors Christmas Party and Dampier Primary School students were there to check whether Santa thought the elderly folk had been good all year. Two parties were held, one for the Roebourne, Wickham and Point Samson senior residents and the other for Karratha and Dampier seniors and shire councillors were invited to join in. During the Karratha and Dampier party, Shire of Roebourne councillor John Lally said the parties are all about young people joining in with the seniors of the community. “It is really important for the younger generation to mingle with the older generation, especially up here where so many children do not have grandparents living in the town,” he said. “Children need older people around them, and the seniors love the children putting on a show for them. “The students of Dampier Primary

School made Christmas decorations, the choir sang songs for the seniors and other students helped out on the day with food and drinks.” Another special quest on the day was Santa Claus. “Santa battled North winds coming down from the North Pole,” Mr Lally laughed. “He then gave out lollies and wished everyone a merry Christmas.” Cr Lally said Christmas is all about joy, and holding the Senior’s Christmas Party gives a sense of Christmas spirit which comes from a real sense of community effort. Autumn Club vice president Alan Green said that he and his wife Kathy have been coming to the Seniors Christmas Party for nine years. “We have a wonderful time, it is absolutely fabulous and it keeps on getting bigger and better every year,” he said. “Thank you so much to everyone involved that makes this possible.”

Christmas carols come and glow for the year By Courtney Bertling The Karratha and Dampier communities celebrated the joy of Christmas as they gathered on Hampton Oval by the palms in Dampier to watch the Carols by Glowlight concert recently. About 450 people turned up to the annual event, entertained by combined church choir and bands, singers and dancers. The choir, assembled from the churches of Karratha and the Red Earth Choir, sang a variety of traditional Christmas carols including Silent Night, Away in a Manger and O Come, All Ye Faithful. St Paul’s Primary school provided the ‘Living Nativity Scene’ as the story was narrated throughout the carols. Father and daughter Tai and Kristy Tehinni sang a duet ‘This is Christmas’ by Kutless. Local dance school, Dance FX gave two dance performances and the Three Wise Men gave out bag of lollies to the children throughout the night. Organiser Kaylene Puzey said the carols have been part of the history of Karratha for many years. “It provides a place where we can come together as a community and reflect on the true meaning of Christmas and the

Christian heritage which we highly value as a nation,” she said. “Traditions are important and it’s imperative that we hold tight to some, remembering that those traditions are what have shaped us. “It’s a great opportunity to be able to stop from the busyness of life, spend time with family and friends and as we can see from the volunteers a great way to give something back to the community, after all Christmas is about giving.” Approximately $800 was raised on the night; this goes to Youth Care, which supports local Karratha Senior High School Chaplain Nathan Baxter. “Thank you everyone for your generosity; school chaplaincy plays a vital role providing our teens with mentoring and assistance at a challenging time in their life,” Ms Puzey said. “Our sincerest thanks to everyone who volunteered in any way to make this event such a success again this year. “Without your participation events like this could not happen.” Ms Puzey would like to thank the sponsors Rio Tinto, 2K Plastics, Golden Hiabs, Onsite Rentals, Signature Music, Karratha Contracting, Pilbara Echo, Coral Coast Print, Lions, Apex, Rotary, YMCA and St John Ambulance.

A number of departments of the Nickol Bay Hospital have been transformed into a winter wonderland to bring joy during Christmas time. The decorating idea started four years ago, when clinical nurse manager at the time, Kylie Bosich thought of holding a competition for the best decorated department. Each year has had a different theme, this year’s is a winter wonderland. Clinical nurse manager Amanda St Clair said it encourages a friendly rivalry between departments, builds morale amongst staff and encourages teamwork with all of the staff involved encouraged to join in. “Last year’s theme was Aussie Christmas; a winter wonderland just seems like the perfect choice and thoughts of freezing cold snow during these hot months seems appealing,” she said. “A lot of effort is put in from the

different departments, some people have spent hours of their own time organising the decorations and have spent their own funds. “There are some amazing sights – the North Pole in the Clinical Nurse Managers office, Silver Fantasy Christmas in Records department, Snow Man and Snowflakes Extravaganza on the ward.” Ms St Clair said it is extremely important to encourage joy during the Christmas holidays. “People are often alone at this time of year and working away from home and families, especially with the huge contingent of fly in fly out workers,” she said. “We also have medical and nursing staff who travel to assist with our staffing during this period. “The Christmas spirit is evident for all who visit the hospital including out patients, in patients, children and visitors. “We have found lots of little children fascinated and getting so excited when they see the decorations – it is a pleasure to hear

• Looking cosy by the fire place at reception

• Snuggling up in the physio department their little voices squealing with delight.” The competition winners will be announced this Wednesday, December 21 at the hospital’s staff Christmas lunch. “This is a yearly lunch where the doctor’s donate the funds and the different departments provide the food,” she said. “Corporate Services clean up and do the dishes – thus giving our hard working Support Services staff a well earned break.”

• Baggers and Taggers masters 35s team

AFL Masters and AFL 9’s here to stay Jazanorts end well played season in top spot • The Jazanorts who won the Ladies grand final for the Karratha Touch Association

By V Swans regional development manager Clint Degebrodt

While the AFL 9’s has been put to bed for the season, the requests for more of this style of sport program is very strong. The Masters wrapped up their AFL 9’s season last Thursday with a quiet celebration and some more of the camaraderie that has become a feature of the over 35’s group, and they plan for more of this type of footy in 2012. While the score was kept in each match and games were competitive; they were always friendly and the importance of who was winning ended as soon as the relieving siren blast rang out over Kevin Richards. The teams were diverse in playing stocks including a wide range of participants from the younger player after a social game, the first time player, the retired superstar, time poor family men and FIFO workers who all found the format good fun. All skill levels were able to successfully participate. The team names were as diverse as the players with Ishmal taking the eventual honours which in this case winning nothing. Ishmal was a mixed bunch of players coming together to form a strong team with players including teachers, primary school students, Water Corporation office and depot staff, as well as Rio Tinto and Worley workers. Ishmal boasted a quality contingent of Indigenous players from within these and other companies and included residents of Dampier, Karratha, Wickham and Roebourne.

Also winning nothing was Baggers and Taggers. Predominantly Shire employees with some Telstra, Rio Tinto, Woodside and NWTIS staff, this was the team to beat with their work place honed communication skills seeing their ball movement was the best in the competition. Mud Crabs came in third and took the third share of nothing. The Crabs are almost exclusively Whelan’s and Elks Surveys staff. The large New Zealand contingent was fantastic to have in the AFL based competition with their Union skills transferring nicely. There was also several first time footy players who proved handy and remarkably they are looking for a Division 1 spot in 2012. The only team that took a prize was the Hacks who won a choice of fabulous cooking spoons for their home culinary exploits. This was the most diverse team with employees from a wide variety of companies including Monadelphous, Allmine, KJV, Rio Tinto and Woodside. This team provided playing opportunities to a large number of FIFO workers who came in and out of the team according to their swings, proving how valuable FIFO workers are to community sport participation. Next year looks bigger with a Water Corporation team coming online under the playing name of “Crocs” while the four original teams will go around the block again. Other social teams are welcome of course. The Swans V Swans Medal for the MVP went to Darryl Wright, a player famous for his longevity and

The grand final for the Karratha Touch Association was played recently with the Jazanorts taking the top spot against the Cyclones scoring 8-3. The Jazanorts were the top team all season, only losing one game to the Cyclones, which happened in the last round before the finals three weeks ago. The most valuable player on the court during the grand final was Pip Browne. In the Men’s A Grade final, Tap It and Gap It defeated the Stallions 8-4. After already representing (and winning) Karratha in the WA State Titles held in Perth towards the end of November, Tap It and staying power. Not only is he still playing NPFL footy, but at 49 is one of the older blokes running around in the Pilbara Masters. Wright is a deserving winner and the only player in the whole competition to poll more than once, polling four times. Huge thanks go once again to the Harris family who are outstanding supporters of the 9‘s program. They ran the Kats Club, set things up and kept things open. Shane Harris provided a steady stream of ice bags particularly to Ishmal’s namesake Captain. Thanks very much to Steele and Riley Barham for their hard work, Chase Rye, Chris Ryan, Giselle Hasen Ashley and Jaxon Degebrodt, and a big thanks to Jesse Turner and Phil Khongjaroen who umpired, set up and assisted both the female and male comps. Masters AFL 9’s will be back again in March 2012, and will be joined by the Female, Men’s Division 1 programs as well as the mixed version of the game for the first time in the Pilbara.

The Falcons and Sharks played very different but attractive brands of footy with the Sharks throwing the ball around fast and running hard while the Falcons played a controlled tempo style based on a strong marking game. The Swans Boys was a team made up of participants in the Swan Districts Pilbara Talent Development squad and used the opportunity to hone their skills and put their wits against senior players. Their improvement was outstanding and they will be well placed come February when they will be called to return to the V Swans Talent Program.

The other teams played fast and hard footy and it was the Falcons in second place followed by the Sharks, Swans Boys and the Bush Crabs.

The Kats took the final match 13 goals to nine which was a remarkable feat considering they were down five to one at half time after the Sharks played irresistible

9A Crane Circle

The Kats defensive pressure limited the Sharks effectiveness with the breeze and were filled with confidence as the match turned to give them their shot with the 30 knot gale. Mick Smith staked his claim as the most dominant forward in the competition with a six goal haul highlighted by long range shots and clever use of the breeze. It was hard to identify the best for the Kats as they all contributed all over the ground, overlapping, linking up handball and some outstanding and desperate marking. Goal of the series was definitely Doug Roberts’ beauty off hands off the back of a pack, struck from mid air deep in the pocket it curled for a major. In a great show of spirit the Kats rushed to congratulate Roberts on the remarkable strike. Huge thanks go to Shane Harris and his family, the Kats Club and LJ Hooker for their assistance and hospitality throughout the program. To put it simply; no Shane Harris, no AFL 9’s. The AFL 9’s program goes into hibernation for the Christmas break and work is underway to get an A Grade pre-season competition up and going for NPFL clubs and keen challengers for February 2012.

A field of 61 golfers turned out to test their skills in this week’s Stableford event and battle it out against the strong winds which played havoc and sent balls in all directions. Half of the field played the front nine holes with Wayne (Happy Feet) Martin taking out the honours, second place went to Dave (Macca) McLaren and Deb McKenzie came in third. The rest of us headed to the back nine holes and Bruce Livingstone had a fantastic day out coming in first. Second place went to Tim Sullivan and Peter Kettlewell came in third. • Karratha Heat took out first place with 24 points

‘Karratha Heat’ winners of MWAFL By Brianna French and Hayley Neil During this term Clint ‘Deggers’ Degebrodt from the V Swans Development program came to Millars Well Primary School to develop the students’ skills in TA 7 and 8 with the help of our Physical Education teacher Mr Bayden Wheals. Not only did we work on football skills, we also focused on our inter-personal and self management skills. As the students became proficient with handballing we started to add kicking to our games. We also enlarged the field, so we extended our running distances from 5 to 10m.

This enabled the students to kick more goals and develop better tactics. In round six the Western Tanks defeated the Leopards 6-2 and the Leavers defeated the Titans 6-5. In round seven, the Karratha Heat defeated the Western Tanks 2-0 and the Leavers defeated the Leopards 4-1. In round six, the Titans defeated the Leopards 10-9 and the Karratha Heat defeated the Leavers 4-2. In round nine, the Leavers defeated the Western Tanks 5-4 and the Titans defeated the Karratha Heat 12-4. And in round 10, the Titans defeated the Western Tanks 6-0 and the Karratha Heat

defeated the Leopards 1-0. On November 9, the inaugural Millars Well Australian Football League season concluded. First place was Karratha Heat with 24 points, second place was Titans with 22 points, third place was Leavers with 20 points, fourth place was Western Tanks with eight points and fifth place was Leopards with six points. All the students had lots of fun running, kicking and handballing the ball around to each other during this term. All the students believe that they have improved their football and teamwork skills because of the AFL Sports Education program and the MWAFL competition.

• Karratha and Hedland triathletes catch their breath after the event

Final 2011 triathlon attracts new faces By Elise Batchelor A record 18 participants completed the final triathlon for Hedland Tri Sports Association’s 2011 segment on Saturday, December 10, including Karratha talent up in Port Hedland for the challenge. Participants opted to take on the short course challenge individually or in teams, with everyone given the added pressure of wind and heat in the late afternoon. Mike Gilbert completed the course, which included a 300 metre swim, 10 kilometre ride and 3 kilometre run, in 35:54, with Doug on 38:12 and visiting Karratha triathlete Steve Bertling coming in at 38:36. Hedland Tri Sports Association’s Jacque Rykers offered a big thanks to everyone

who came down and she was very excited about the turnout. She said several people who took part in this last tri of the year were new faces, which was a fantastic thing to see. “A special mention goes to Liz and Caroline who completed the very windy ride on mountain bikes. “Hard core girls – well done!” Rykers said. The Hedland Tri Sports Association will be starting up again in early February. Participation and a desire for personal achievement are the two benchmarks for success. Anyone who’d like to give it a go and join the database for a new year’s resolution fitness challenge should contact Jacque Rykers on 0419 959 347.
