echonews echonews Karratha pool expert calls for health check Swimming pool expert Ernest Petersen of Karratha is calling for a ‘spring-clean’ of local backyard pools after a study found 86 per cent of Australian pools are unhealthy. The study, which analysed over 1500 PoolWerx customer pool water samples, found an alarming lack of maintenance over the winter months had left most Aussie pools with unsafe pH or chlorine levels. Mr Petersen said pools left dormant during winter experienced a build-up of nasty bacteria, which could have drastic health consequences for swimmers. “The fact that only 14 per cent of backyard pools across the country are “swimmable” at the end of winter really emphasises the need for pool owners to be vigilant with their servicing over the cooler months,” he said. Mr Petersen said many pool owners might believe their pool is healthy due to water clarity. “Your pool may look clean and crystal clear but if it hasn’t been maintained with the correct chemicals regularly over winter the chlorine content will be low and there will be ‘bugs’ lurking in the water,” he said. “A clean pool isn’t necessarily a healthy pool, in fact it can be a very dangerous one.” Twenty-three per cent of pool water tests indicated unhealthily low levels of chlorine and 36 per cent indicated extremely high pH levels. “The variety of bacteria and algae that can breed in these conditions can present serious health risks for swimmers including diarrhoea, eye and ear infections as well as skin irritations,” he said. Mr Petersen recommended pool owners keep a detailed schedule of how often to test and maintain pool water or call a professional to ensure their pool is safe, healthy and clean for the busy summer period. “While there are over two million residential pools in Australia many people have no idea which chemicals to use, in what quantities or how often,” he said. “That’s why we’re calling on pool owners to talk to a professional this swimming season.” Mr Petersen also called for the Karratha community to check the safety of their pool environments. “Pool gates need to be checked to ensure the latch is still in working order, any gaps in or under the fence should be secured and objects that could be used to climb over the fence must be removed,” he said. “We want to start the swimming season with healthy pools in risk-free and secure environments.”

Deadly jellyfish Whipping up a storm visits waters By Courtney Bertling By Courtney Bertling Irukandji Jellyfish have been reported in Pilbara coastal waters and people considering oceanbased activities including swimming, snorkeling, fishing and even launching boats should take care. Local fisherman Beau Cartledge reported seeing the jellyfish on January 20 to the Department of Fisheries. “On Friday morning, just after seven, a mate of mine and I were at the Back Beach boat ramp when my mate first saw all these little jellyfish,” he said. “I’ve never seen anything like it before, it looked like a blanket of jellyfish that kept on going. “I’ve lived up here for so long, so I knew what kind of jellyfish they were and how dangerous they can be. “We decided to ring the fisheries immediately and post a status on Facebook to make as many people aware as possible.” Mr Cartledge said that because of the school holidays he was aware that a higher number of people would be visiting the area and would hate for anyone to be stung. “To an untrained eye, people may not be aware just how dangerous the Irukandji Jellyfish can be,” he said. “A kid may have jumped straight in and that could be it. Shire of Roebourne Chief Executive Officer Collene Longmore said the Irukandji Jellyfish was very small, not much bigger than a match head, but its sting could be extremely unpleasant and painful, even deadly. “They are related to the larger box jellyfish, which are also found in the coastal waters of the North West,” Ms Longmore said. “Irukandji stings may be barely noticeable at first, however symptoms gradually become apparent and then more and more intense in the following five to 120 minutes (30 minutes on average).” Irukandji syndrome includes an array of systemic symptoms including severe headache, backache, muscle pains, chest and abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, sweating, anxiety, hypertension, tachycardia and pulmonary edema. Irukandji are present in the North West all year round, although they are more predominant from November through to April.
A dust storm with winds reaching 102 km per hour took residents in the Shire of Roebourne by surprise last Sunday. FESA issued a warning for people to take action within an area bounded by Roebourne to Millstream to Pannawonica to Cape Preston “This is typical weather for this time of year but could damage homes and make travel dangerous,” a FESA representative said. On Sunday, January 22, 1pm, the temperature in Karratha was at 39.8 degrees, however, in just 20 minutes, it dropped to 31.7 degrees when the 102kph winds were recorded. At 2pm the Bureau of Meteorology advised there was a severe thunderstorm warning out for heavy rainfall and damaging winds. At this time the temperature dropped again to 27.1. People in the warning area were advised that there was a risk of severe thunderstorms during Sunday afternoon. “At 1.38pm a line of storms was located near Roebourne to Millstream, moving west at around 55 kilometres per hour,” FESA said. “The line is expected to reach Karratha around 2.30 to 2.45pm. “These thunderstorms may be accompanied by damaging winds and flash flooding that could cause damage to homes and property.” What to do during a thunderstorm FESA’s State Emergency Service has these tips to help you and your family stay safe:
25%
• Close curtains and blinds, and stay inside away from windows. • If caught outside find safe shelter away from trees, powerlines, storm water drains and streams. • If boating, swimming or surfing leave the water. • If there is flooding, create your own sandbags by using pillow cases filled with sand and place them around doorways to protect your home. If driving: • Slow down, turn your lights on and keep a safe distance from other drivers. • If it is raining heavily and you cannot see, pull over and park with your hazard lights on until the rain clears. • Do not drive into water of unknown depth and current. • If you are in the country be careful driving on gravel roads as surfaces will be slippery and muddy and vehicles could become bogged. Important numbers to remember • If the storm has damaged your home call the SES on 132 500. • In a life threatening situation call 000. • For the latest weather information visit www.bom.gov. au or call 1300 659 213. • After a storm SES volunteers make temporary repairs to homes that have been badly damaged, such as roofs that have been ripped off or large fallen trees on homes and cars. You should contact your insurance company to organise permanent repairs. • Call 1300 657 209, visit www.fesa.wa.gov.au or listen to news bulletins.

Ok mums, dads, kids. School’s starting. Bright, fresh, clean, neat, shiny and hopefully nit free! My advice - if in doubt, never try getting rid of those nitty nasties with peanut butter. Might taste yum to lick off, but boy is that stuff sticky!
Icky sticky nit wit blitz I hate nits. If you wanna be quite picky They are absolutely icky. Nits which are the pits. With their sticky little eggies And their tricky little leggies. No comb fits. As those itty bitty bities Stay up biting through the nighties. Give me the…grrr As I get all itchy scratchy And I want to light a matchy. Nits are twits As they reproduce in millions, Make that billions, trillions zillions. Not quite hits In this house they spell disaster, Super FAIL I cannot master. Worse than zits With your head all read and bumpy Wanna get that shoe, go thumpy! Scratching is the pits As I yell and shriek and tangle And yet one more comb I mangle.
Small fine slits In the head lice comb of metal Grimacing my evil petal Chop in bits With my fingernails I squish ‘em Bloody plot like a John Grisham.
Or a stronger, lethal quotient
I loathe nits And so now I’m pouring poison Thinking I have got no choice an’ I vote nits Right away but first try fly spray Maybe then they’ll suffocate, hey? Off one flits, But, heck no that’s just some dust Maybe toothpaste, squirt, or bust! Such nit wits But conditioner has no power Nor does bleach poured in the shower. Ten Brad Pitts Could not possibly distract them, Unless maybe he just whacked them. This nit blitz Might well take stuff that’s more potent
It’s a battle of wits. Maybe herbicide…a farmer? I don’t advocate nit karma! Nits do splits Sliding underneath one hair Maybe peanut butter, yeah! Sticks to bits I’ve got peanuts now, they’re worse In this sticky icky verse Yes, I hate nits So long hair you are now gone And no nits will still live on. Chop nit wits Now my hair is short and neat Tidy clean and hard to beat Call it quits. But this white stuff, what’s that guff? What the heck…oh no…DANDRUFF?!

Get your skin checked regularly By Courtney Bertling Doctors say getting your skin checked should be a regular thing in the Pilbara, due to the high UV radiation and covering up with clothing is the most effective way of protecting your skin. Melanoma is less common than other skin cancers, however, it is much more dangerous and causes the majority (75 per cent) of deaths related to skin cancer. Worldwide, doctors diagnose about 160,000 new cases of melanoma annually. The diagnosis is more frequent in women than in men and is particularly common among Caucasians living in sunny climates, with high rates of incidence in Australia, including Karratha. Local doctor Andrew Enyvary said Australia has one of the highest incidences of skin cancer in the world, at
nearly six times the rates in Canada, the US and the UK.
hundreds of basal cell carcinoma cancers and a number of melanomas.
“When you look at lung cancer, it may take 30 years of smoking to get lung cancer,” he said.
“People in this region, getting your skin checked should be a regularly thing because of the high UV radiation that we get,” he said.
“But in the sun, if you get a bad sunburn then you get develop melanoma at a young age.” However, he said if you don’t get UV radiation damage to your skin, it is not as likely to develop melanoma. “People who burn frequently, that is who we worry about, there is a lot of damage to their skin, resulting in skin cancer down the track,” he said. “Genetics do have a lot to do with it as well, say if someone has a lot of moles, that is a sign for a higher melanoma risk. “Or if you have a family history of melanoma, that can increase your risk.” In the last year Dr Enyvary has treated
“The biggest thing is to avoid the sun exposure, that is hard up here, but people need to cover up. “Covering up is better then putting on sunscreen, so if you had to choose between the two, choose clothing because it actually blocks the sun. “People need to get checks regularly, especially in you have a lot of moles, if you have a family history, people in high risk occupation like welders as they get a lot of UV radiation and people who are constantly outdoors and in the sun like exercise or fishing.” Dr. Enyvary works at Kinetic Health, Karratha on De Grey place.

• Vanessa Wyder and Tayhla Cheep will be travelling through Karratha in three months
Cruisin’ through Karratha to help cure cancer By Courtney Bertling Last year we saw a number of people, either by car, bike and even camel pass through Karratha while traveling around Australia for many different reasons. Now, in 2012, the community have Tayhla Cheep and Vanessa Wyder to look forward to when they pass through in approximately three months’ time while they travel Australia to raise money for cancer. Both women dream of one day living in a world where cancer is a thing of the past, so Ms Cheep is helping her friend and two-time Hodgkin’s survivor Ms Wyder raise money for Cancer Council. The pair started their journey ‘Cruisin’ 4 a Cure’ from Melbourne last Wednesday and plan to raise $1 million during a 12 month trip around this great country. Ms Wyder was first diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease in November 2006. By March 2007 she reached remission, only to relapse with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in July 2010.
However, she has been cancer free since July and said she is so grateful to have been given a new lease on life. “When I was sick I actually got offered a motor home by Jayco for 12 months,” she said. “I was so overwhelmed by their generosity that I decided to turn the trip into a fundraiser. “We’ll be holding fundraising events in the various places we visit, shaking tins and we’ve also got can coolers we’re going to sell. “We’ll be asking people in the big cities to donate money toward the cause.” Ms Cheep said she will be joining Ms Wyder for three months, ending her trip when they reach Karratha. “Everyone in the community has experienced cancer at some stage in one way or another, so this is really a tribute to all the survivors,” she said. Already the two women have raised $13,400 for the cause. For information, or to donate, visit www.cruisin4acure.org.au

FIFO dies in boating accident A Newman fly-in fly-out worker was killed in a freak boating accident in Perth on January 18. The worker, Mr Tim Zandbergen, who worked with explosives at a mine in Newman, was being towed on a ski biscuit on the Swan River when the biscuit hit the boat’s wake, became airborne and struck a navigation marker. Western Australia police Inspector Barry Mann said Mr Zandbergen was rushed to hospital but pronounced dead on arrival. “What happened is they were travelling roughly in a western direction, and unfortunately the biscuit has swung out and hit
the marker,” Insp Mann said. “There were a few witnesses and people on another boat, plus the people in the boat which was involved, obviously tried to resuscitate the person that was deceased. “They were unsuccessful, but at least they gave it a good attempt.” A 21-year-old man who was also on the biscuit was being treated at Royal Perth Hospital with serious injuries. The crash is being investigated by police. Witnesses are also being interviewed, including the 28-year-old driver of the boat.

Water Corp funds community garden at local school The Water Corporation has provided $2,000 to fund a community garden project for students at Millars Well Primary School in recognition of the school’s effort to promote waterwise garden practices.
Mrs Chapman said the site would also be used as a waterwise demonstration garden when the ‘Beyond Gardens’ team, visited the Pilbara for a series of workshops mid-2012.
Water Corporation North West Regional Manger, Kerrie Chapman said students would grow their own vegetables, fruit and bush-tucker, and the garden would also serve as a centre for use in learning activities across the curriculum.
Deputy Principal Nicole Cocoran said students were invited to submit their own designs and features for the garden in a school-wide competition, which generated a huge amount of enthusiasm and interest within the school and local community.
“The garden is being developed with the help of a dedicated team of volunteers, including Amber McCallum from Garden Design & Maintenance,” Mrs Chapman said. “Amber has provided a detailed reticulation design for the site, including drip irrigation, mulch and a submeter, so students can monitor their water use.”
“By teaching students the value of recycling, water efficiency and sustainability we can provide an understanding of the issues affecting our planets future, while equipping them with the skills to live more economical and environmentally friendly lives,” Ms Cocoran said. It is anticipated the garden will be ready for the students to begin planting in March 2012.
• The Shire and SAFE signed a MOU last year to benefit both parties
MOU between Shire and SAFE The Shire of Roebourne and Saving Animals From Euthanasia have signed a memorandum of understanding which will guide the way the two organisations work together. Roebourne Shire President Fiona White-Hartig said the two organisations had worked together since SAFE’s inception nine years ago but the MOU meant each party now had clearly-defined roles and responsibilities. “This MOU means we can better support SAFE in its endeavours to re-home dogs and SAFE can better support our rangers in their day-to-day work,” Cr White-Hartig said. SAFE Founder and Karratha Coordinator Sue Hedley said

“The signing of the MOU between SAFE and the Shire is very important in maintaining clarity regarding the role of the Shire’s rangers and the volunteer work that SAFE provides to our local community,” Ms Hedley said.
“This is a track record SAFE is proud of and it must be wonderful for the rangers as well,” she said.
“This MOU is testament to the nine-year relationship that SAFE has had with Shire rangers since its inception. “It also sets a precedent for other SAFE branches, who may look to replicate this MOU in other areas of the Western Australia.” Ms Hedley said by working with the Shire, SAFE was able to re-home all healthy and

Cr White-Hartig said rangers should be the first point-ofcontact for those seeking assistance with lost and found dogs but SAFE could help with other animals. “According to the MOU, Ranger Services will provide SAFE with any homeless dogs in its pound, which can be rehomed,” she said. “Ranger Services will also allow special needs dogs and very young puppies to spend time with SAFE rather than in the pound.”

Do you provide education or health services to Aboriginal people in the Pilbara? Are you a teacher, teacher’s aide, principal, doctor, nurse or allied health provider? If the answer is yes, then we want your opinion about Aboriginal education or health issues.
Following in the footsteps of Sam Shepherd’s trip to New York and participation in the 2011 race, Indigenous men aged between 18 and 30 have the opportunity to tackle the 2012 New York marathon. The New York City Marathon is one of the toughest and biggest running events in the world, with 48,000 runners, two million cheering spectators and 315 million worldwide television viewers. In preparation for her run, local woman Sam trained with Australia’s best ever marathon runner, Rob de Castella and his Indigenous Marathon Project which annually trains young men and women to participate
Community Update The Pilbara Underground Power Project (PUPP) is a partnership between the Government of Western Australia (through Pilbara Cities) and Local Government Authorities, delivered by Horizon Power. The project aims to provide cyclone affected Northwest towns with a safe and reliable power supply, replacing ageing overhead electricity infrastructure with underground networks. O’Donnell Griffin, the contractor undertaking the works, is progressing in Bulgarra and Millars Well. The first changeover from overhead power to underground took place on 16 August in Viveash Way and to date 118 properties in Karratha have been undergrounded.
Impact on you The external cables between the front boundary to the meter box, and along the street verge will be installed using underground drilling or open trenching. The contractor will door knock before work on private property commences. You will be notified when access into your yard is required. If your switchboard is inside your house, access into your house will be required. All verges and work areas are recorded before work commences so they can be repaired to a similar standard after the work takes place. Care will be taken at all times to minimise the impact of this work on your property. However, some disruptions to verges and front gardens will occur. At the different stages of work, there may be an interruption to your power supply for up to four hours. You will be notified at least three days prior. In the event of a yellow cyclone alert all open excavations are backfilled.

They will be coached and supervised by Australian marathon champion, Rob de Castella, be required to attend a number of training camps around Australia during the year, and undertake a special Certificate III in Community Recreation – Indigenous Health. As any one of the 15 Indigenous Marathon Project runners will attest, crossing the finish line in Central Park is one of the thrills of a lifetime. Applicants should be willing to inspire other Indigenous men and women, and have an interest in wanting to make a difference by promoting a healthy lifestyle. If this is you or someone you know, visit www.imp.org.au.

This is a major electrical project that has four stages of work:
in the marathon, inspiring their families and communities in the process. A major part of the project is to promote healthy lifestyles and create role models within the runners’ communities. “I have never competed in fun runs or marathons before, and I thought why not?” she said. “It’s a great experience, you meet new people so I thought I would give it a go” Now, the Indigenous Marathon Project is seeking outstanding Indigenous men and women aged between 18 and 30, who have the commitment and ability to train for this endurance running event for 2012.

Aurora Algae set to raise $100M Aurora Algae began operations in Karratha mid last year and now has its sights on raising $100 million after hitting the $22 million mark a few months ago. The $22 million has left the company fully funded until its next expansion phase of harvesting algae-based biomass for products in the nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, aquaculture and renewable energy markets. The company’s Karratha operation is planned to be increased from the initial 100 hectares of commercial operation to 400 hectares in the next stage, and then 1000 hectares. The company is looking to raise $100 million from existing and new private investors by mid-year, and is aligning at an IPO later in the year. Founder and managing director, Matthew Caspari said the next phase will get Aurora Algae into profits. “It’s highly scalable,” he said. Mr Caspari said that existing investors such as Gabriel
Venture Partners are expected to return in this round, plus an un-named strategic investor. The venture uses a large amount of marginal land, but being in Karratha enables it to take advantage of the improving infrastructure, thanks to the resources boom. ‘’It is easy to get things in and out, thanks to the resources industry,’’ Mr Caspari said. ‘’The downside is labour is amazingly expensive and housing is amazingly expensive.” The company has not provided any indication of likely production volumes as it scales up, but it will produce ‘’hundreds of tonnes of material a month; thousands of tonnes a year’’. Karratha has been the perfect place for Aurora Algae to make profit within a few months. The abundant sunlight means the algae grow quickly – doubling in volume in a day – ensuring plentiful product for processing.

Rain doesn’t stop the Karratha celebrations By Courtney Bertling The Shire Roebourne held their annual Australia Day celebrations incorporating the Citizenship Ceremony and Australia Day awards. Federal Member for Durack, Barry Haase flew into Karratha for the special celebrations and didn’t mind getting wet from the rain at all. “How lucky are we to be able to celebrate as Australians and very shortly 20 more people will be able to say that ‘we are Australian’,” he said. “On the difference between being born in Australia and automatically being an Australia citizen and the act of choosing to become an Australia citizen.” Roebourne Shire Council President, Fiona White-Hartig said she is pleased to see so many citizen applicants at the ceremony. “I would like to congratulate each one of you for choosing to become an Australian citizen, a decision not only welcomed by me but all of Australia. “Citizenship is a common bond that unites us all Australians where they are Australia’s traditional inhabitants, first generations migrants or the descendants of earlier settlers. “Our rich heritage stands by the contributions made by all of us.” Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, the Honorary Chris Bowen said that the day is where the new citizens pledge their commitment to Australia and its people.

Respond to SBC survey for a chance to win iPad If the prospect of assisting in the study for a major economic project wasn’t enough, the Small Business Centre West Pilbara says all respondents to the Karratha Business Park feasibility study survey will go into a draw to win an Apple iPad. Chairman of SBCWP Grant Cucel said it is important the survey results are an accurate reflection of the potential future users of a business park in Karratha. “There are just three weeks left to participate in this survey and we are excited to announce that all respondents will be entered in a draw to win an iPad 2,” Mr Cucel said.
“So far we have had overwhelming interest and support for the project from government and industry as well as the general business community, however we have only received a handful of completed surveys. “In addition to going into the draw to win an iPad 2, survey participants will be helping to shape the West Pilbara’s future economic prospects.” SBCWP Manager Rachel Whiting said completing the Karratha Business Park survey was neither a commitment nor an application for the facility. “The survey should be completed by individuals interested in starting-up or
expanding a business in or to Karratha, Tom Price or Onslow,” Mrs Whiting said. “The Karratha Business Park will assist in reducing the failure rate of startup businesses by providing affordable commercial space as well as office administrative support and business advice. “By supporting start-up businesses the project aims to enhance the sustainability of Karratha’s economy through job creation and improved services,” she said. Conditions apply for the 16G Apple iPad 2 giveaway and are available to view on the SBCWP website www.sbcwp.com.au

New rules for hire businesses New rules contained in the new Personal Property Securities Act are due to start on 31 January 2012 and Pilbara hire businesses will be forced to register the assets they own and have hired to their clients. Karratha Small Business Centre manager Rachel Whiting said businesses operating in the equipment hire industry or who rely on Retention of Title clauses need to evaluate how the new PPSA will impact their business. From 31 January 2012, should a hire business have a piece of equipment out on hire, and their client falls into an insolvency position and an administrator is appointed, the piece of equipment can be claimed by the administrator and used to repay part of the insolvent business’ debt, unless the equipment is recorded on the PPS Register.
Perth Based Accountants Crowe Horwath principal Chris Peterson said previously if people owned an item of equipment and hired it to a client, and their client went into administration, they could get it back from the administrator. “From 31 January 2012 you will only be able to do this if you have registered the equipment,” he said. The PPSA will also affect businesses who sell goods on a Retention of Title basis. ROT clauses commonly appear on the bottom of invoices as “title to the goods supplied does not pass to the purchase until payment in full has been made”. From 31 January 2012 these ROT clauses will not be enforceable unless they are registered.

But you’re not them anymore. You are starting from the bottom again. Which means (just like the younger years do to you), you respect your elders, that includes students and teachers. Get Oriented The first day of school is your first chance to find your way around a new school, or learn the pathways to new classes in your old school. It’s a lot to learn in one day, so don’t be surprised if you need a reminder or two. • Get ready for school kids
Back to school kids It’s school time again! You’re probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and maybe even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around for a little while. The First Day Most teachers kick off the school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the stuff you’ll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over classroom rules so you’ll know what’s allowed and what’s not. Pay close attention so you’ll know if you need to raise your hand to ask a question and what the rules are
about visiting the restroom. You might already know a lot of kids in your classes on the first day. But it’s a great day to make a new friend, so try to say hello to kids you know and new ones that you don’t. Make the first move and you’ll be glad you did and so will your new friend. Moving to High School? When you drive past the school, it looks huge! But really it isn’t. You’re probably thinking, ‘how will I remember where my classes are?’, ‘what if I forgot my locker combination?’ or ‘what will people think of me?’ The secret is, don’t stress about anything. Take each day as it comes. Your teachers know that this is a big change from primary to secondary school and will help you adjust. Most year 7s have gotten used to being the ‘big’ kids of the school.
It might help to write a few notes to yourself, so you’ll remember the important stuff, like your locker combination and that lunch starts at 12:30, not 12:10. Before you know it, your fingers will fly as you open your locker and you won’t have to check your notes to know what time lunch starts. A Bad Start? What if you hate school by the end of day one? Teachers recommend giving things some time to sort themselves out — once you know your way around the building and get adjusted to the new routine, you’ll probably feel better. If those feelings don’t fade, talk to your mum, dad, teacher, or school counselor. Here are a few final tips for a great school year: Get enough sleep. Eat a healthy breakfast. Try your best. Use good work habits, like writing down your assignments and turning in your homework on time. Take your time with schoolwork. If you don’t understand something, ask the teacher.

Packing a healthy lunch box More than at other meals, kids have a lot of control over what they eat for lunch at school. A kid can choose to eat the green beans or throw them out. A kid also can choose to eat an apple instead of an ice cream sandwich. When choosing what to eat for lunch, making a healthy choice is really important. Here’s why: eating a variety of healthy foods gives you energy to do stuff, helps you grow the way you should, and can even keep you from getting sick. Think of your school lunch as the fuel you put in your tank. If you choose the wrong kind of fuel, you might run out of energy before the day is over. So what is the right kind of fuel? What does a healthy lunch look like? Wholegrain for energy The first thing that needs to be considered when packing a lunch is a good source of carbohydrate for energy. For most children, this will be a sandwich but may also be a wrap made from flatbread such as Lavash or Lebanese bread, or from cracker biscuits or rice and corn cakes. It is known that wholegrain varieties of breads and cereals are digested more slowly than more processed white varieties and are likely to keep children fuller for longer, so choose wholegrain wherever possible. Protein and vegies Aim for your child’s sandwich to contain a good source of lean protein such as 97 per cent fat-free turkey, chicken or ham, tinned tuna or salmon or low-fat cheese. The protein portion will keep your child full, help to maintain concentration levels through the afternoon lessons and help prevent the four o’clock rush to the fridge when they get home. Also try to add some sort of salad to the sandwich. Salad and vegetables add fibre and bulk, which also helps to keep him or her full. Some options that will not make sandwiches too soggy include lettuce, grated carrot, celery or capsicum and cucumber circles. Fruit for fibre Always add one piece of fresh or dried fruit to your child’s lunch box. Children will eat fruit if they are hungry and there are no other more appealing “junk type” options available. Water to drink Water should be the drink of choice. Fruit juices, cordials, flavoured waters and full strength soft drinks are very high in sugar and should not be consumed on a daily basis. Small snack Failing to include a snack in your child’s lunch box runs the risk of them swapping their fruit for more appealing packaged options.

Give it a ‘tri’ in 2012 The Nickol Bay Triathlon Club is holding their first event for 2012 next weekend, February 5 at the Dampier Palms. President Matthew Brierley said the club had a great four events to the lead up to Christmas with two of those being at the new Dampier Palms location. “After a lot of discussion and review of options the committee finally put in to place two club events based out of the Dampier Palms,” he said. “Competitors swam parallel to the beach around two buoys 100 metres apart, then cycled around Dampier (down Parker Point Road, thanks to Rio Tinto) and then the run was along the footpath in front of the Dampier Harbour.

“It was great to be able to hold events that felt and looked a lot more like a traditional triathlon, and to be able to show that such an event can be done successfully means that the club events are not contingent on the availability of the aquatic centre and its resources. “There was a large turn out for both of the events, as well as the two other events we held at the Karratha Aquatic Centre, showing that all ages and fitness levels also enjoy the new location.” Another highlight for 2011, Mr Brierley said, was the large and very successful fundraising campaign, focused fully on purchasing a new

timing system for the club. “The system costs more than $10,000 and will be a system that is similar to that used by other triathlon clubs around the state,” he said. “Rather than having two or three volunteers tied up each event managing the current timer, logging numbers as competitors pass through the transition area and then having to reconcile the data for hours afterwards, the club will now have a system that will automatically track each competitor with remote transponders attached to their ankles. “There are many advantages with the new system and its hoped that it will be in place for the first event.” Mr Brierley noted the fantastic support provided by Scott Cycles. “At each event so far they have provided prizes to give away to competitors, with a pair of $370 Carnac cycle shoes donated as a spot prize for the last event held in early December,” he said. “The club is very appreciative of this support from Scott Cycles.” The only lowlight for 2011 was fareweling their Treasurer, Dave Harrison. “As well as being a great sportsman he also made a big contribution to the club behind the scenes,” he said.
“We will miss him and wish him and his family well in Perth.” The Nickol Bay Tri Club continues to cater for all competitors, regardless of age - whether you are seven or 70, and for all fitness levels. The nature of the routes we use and the staggered starts means that all competitors in all races are competing alongside each other, having fun and supporting each other. “There is a wonderful inviting feel to the club and we openly welcome all new and old members to come and take part,” Mr Brierley said. “Perhaps the club motto could be “Dead last is greater than did not finish which trumps did not start”,” he said. The club’s annual Dampier triathlon is on April 1, 2012 and it will be the 30th anniversary of the triathlon, making it the longest running triathlon in WA. “This is always a special event, attracting competitors from around the state,” Mr Brierley said. “In 2012, it promises to be bigger and better than previously given the significant milestone.” More details of the event can be found on the club’s web site, www. nickolbaytriclub.com, along with the details of all upcoming club events and how to register.

Western Desert softballers show raw talent A team of softballers has travelled to Perth from the Western Desert to today compete in exhibition games as part of the U19 Women’s Australian Fastpitch Championships at the Mirrabooka International Softball Centre.
Accustomed to a pitch of red dust, the trip to Perth was a first for a majority of the Western Desert team, who were given the opportunity through Softball WA and Newcrest Mining. The woman regarded as the world’s best batter, Stacey Porter, was on hand to coach the team and lead them through some training before the game. Stacey is Captain of the Australian Team, NAIDOC Sportsperson of the Year and Australian Softballer of the Year. “I’ve definitely seen some raw talent here,” Stacey said. “I heard before I got here that these girls only play around three times a year
but they have such a love of the game, it’s been great to be around them.
“I’ve seen such a huge improvement in just two hours.” Through the Indigenous Sports Program, the Department of Sport and Recreation provides funding for Softball WA to run programs that increase participation rates of Indigenous youth. “We are trying to encourage more women’s participation in the sport and one way of achieving that is to have the girls come down to Perth to see a higher standard of play and how regular training can make a difference on game day,” said Western Desert Indigenous Sports Development Officer Stephen Anthony. Softball WA’s association with the Western Desert softballers goes back many years. Each year the state sporting association heads up to the remote
Aboriginal community of Punmu to help run softball for the women as part of one of four annual sports carnival run by Newcrest Mining and supported by DSR.
The Western Desert League attracts teams from communities including Parnngurr, Warralong, Jigalong, Kiwirrkurra, Nullagine and Punmu. “Softball is the number one sport for Indigenous women in Australia, not many people know that, and people in remote regions have been missing out for a long time,” said Softball WA’s Trevor Schorr. “This is really about increasing participation in the sport, we want these girls to learn so they can go back to their communities and teach the kids.” Anyone interested in playing softball can contact their local softball association or Softball WA on 9349 9911.
