Thank you readers On behalf of the Leukaemia Foundation in WA, I would like to thank your readers who participated in and supported the World’s Greatest Shave 2012. Tens of thousands of brave Aussies signed up to shave or colour their hair to help lessen the impact of blood cancer by taking part in this year’s campaign. As the Foundation receives no ongoing government funding, funds raised for the World’s Greatest Shave will help meet the increasing demand for our support services which sees one Australian diagnosed with a blood cancer or a related blood disorder every 46 minutes. Sadly, every two hours, someone loses their life to blood cancer. Each year, the Foundation supports thousands of people and their families by providing free services including: information, emotional support, transport and accommodation for regional families required to relocate closer to city hospitals. We also invest

millions of dollars each year into vital research to improve treatments and find cures for blood cancer. This year, we set our biggest fundraising target at $1.9 million. Thanks to all of our supporters, we have now raised a record-breaking amount in WA and have achieved our goal. Donations can still be made at www.worldsgreatestshave.com For the 11,500 Australians projected to be diagnosed with blood cancer or a related blood disorder this year, your readers’ support of the World’s Greatest Shave will make all the difference. On behalf of all the patients and families in Western Australia who will be helped as a direct result of you supporting the World’s Greatest Shave, thank you. Carolyn Turner General Manager Leukaemia Foundation WA

‘Remarkable’ Aboriginal elder dies One of the oldest and highly respected elders of the Yindjibarndi people, Ned Mayinbungu Cheedy, died aged 105 on Sunday, April 1. Federal Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin has paid tribute to Mr Cheedy, calling him a remarkable Australian who helped improve the lives of Aboriginal people in his Yindjibarndi homeland and beyond. Last year Mr Cheedy was awarded the prestigious NAIDOC Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to caring for Yindjibarndi law, culture, language and the future of his people. Born in 1907 at Hooley Station in the Pilbara, Mr Cheedy became a skilled

stockman and windmill man on the station before moving to Roebourne Reserve so his children could receive an education. He spent years teaching young people about his country and the importance of education, became a lay preacher at the Pilbara Aboriginal Church and travelled across WA helping families affected by alcoholism. Mr Cheedy was a cultural teacher, custodian and elder in his community for more than 20 years, teaching people about the land and its stories through books and films. Anthropologist Michael Robinson who worked with Mr Cheedy on the successful Yinjibarndi and Ngarluma

Corporation website Sunday night, saying: “We will carry on your work and your inspiration will always guide us.” At the time of print, the site was closed for respect. Mr Cheedy passed away peacefully in his home in Roebourne.

Pilbara families invited to enter digital age Only 47 per cent of financially disadvantaged families have access to a computer at home, compared with 89 per cent in higher income earning groups, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, but The Smith Family aims to bridge this digital divide by making computers more readily available to Pilbara families. The Smith Family, through partnerships with Royalties for Regions and BHP Billiton Iron Ore, is making 80 refurbished computers available to families in the regions of Karratha, Roebourne/Wickham, South Hedland and Port Hedland as part of its Tech Packs Project. Through Tech Packs, families are invited to register to receive refurbished computers at no cost and are provided with 12 months free internet connection and training in basic computer skills. Training will commence in April, but The Smith Family is urging members of the public to apply now so as not to miss out on a computer. Recruitment company WorkPac has generously provided The Smith Family with a large screen television which will be used to assist with training computer recipients to use and maintain their computers. WorkPac has demonstrated strong community-mindedness in recent months, working with The Smith Family to provide various facilities to local families. The Tech Pack Project aims to improve community digital literacy, equipping children and their families who may otherwise not be able to afford computers, with the technological skills that are now prerequisites for participation in lifelong learning and social inclusion. “Families shouldn’t be left behind just because they don’t have access to a computer at home and it’s increasingly important for students to be able to use a computer to complete their homework,” said Learning for Life Worker Daphne Trevurza. “We want local families to be as technologically advantaged as their city friends, have the facilities to apply for jobs, stay in touch with their families and log their children on to Mathletics to improve not only their digital literacy but their numeracy skills also.” Research shows that access to ICT (information, communication and technology) can increase study and employment opportunities for parents and young people, improve the capacity of parents to support children at school, increase the engagement of children at school, and improve individual’s self-esteem and overall wellbeing. To find out more about the Tech Packs Project, or to register for a computer, contact Daphne Trevurza on 9144 1854, Carol Warren on 9144 1854, or Nia Hadenfeldt on 9172 2408.

The Pilbara Poet

The Parade I told Rex he should stop it. I told him he was mean. I said he should stop clonking me Or he’d be a “has been”. I told my teacher on him. She put him on a chair. I said he’d find it good to think about his mind right there.

The day the big parade was here we all lined up so proud. I wore my shiny vomit on my head and it was loud. It sparkled in the sunlight. It glistened green like grass And round and round we walked together; gosh, it was a blast.

And oh, oh, no, I tripped and fell right down, my vomit flying, Rex’s head it clipped. And sure enough, my vomit sat upon his head enormous I giggled then, that vomit there, thinking, oh gosh it’s gorgeous. I got it back and kept on walking Mum and Dad both cheered. to see the Easter vomit parade with their kindy girl that year.

POLICEWATCH By Senior Constable Newby General Information: Members of the public seem to be confused about when they can report loud parties or noisy neighbours to the police. The noise must be deemed unreasonable before police will attend. We will determine if a noise is unreasonable by doing one of the following three methods. Firstly we will park outside the residence and listen from our vehicle, or we will park 100 meters away or we will stand on the fence line of the property where the noise is being emitted. Common sense prevails, if the noise is deemed unreasonable for the time of day or night then we will attend

and tell the owner to stop whatever the noise is. If you believe the noise is unreasonable then please call the Police and if we agree we will enter the premises of where the noise is coming from and stop the noise. If we attend and we do not believe the noise is unreasonable then we will let the caller know. If we have asked the occupant to cease the noise and it continues then we will return and seize all the equipment that is making the noise. Karratha has a diverse population with a high number of shift workers therefore we need to all respect the community that we live in. Rio Tinto has begun a strategic review of its diamond business that will include exploring a range of options for potential divestment of its diamond interests.

Rio Tinto operates three diamond mines, Argyle in Australia (100 per cent interest), Diavik in Canada (60 per cent interest), and Murowa in Zimbabwe (78 per cent interest), as well as Bunder, an advanced diamonds project in India (100 per cent interest). Diamonds and Minerals chief executive Harry Kenyon-Slaney said they regularly review their businesses to ensure they remain aligned with Rio Tinto’s strategy of operating large, long-life,

expandable assets.

“The diamonds market outlook is very positive, with demand growing strongly and lack of new discoveries limiting supply. We have a valuable, high quality diamonds business, but given its scale we are reviewing whether we can create more value through a different ownership structure,” he said. “This process may take some time. We’re committed to keeping stakeholders informed about any key developments, and in the meantime are reassuring employees and the governments in the states and countries where we operate that it is very much business as usual.”

Chamber invites Kochie to Karratha The Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry needs your help to secure Sunrise presenter David Koch as a celebrity guest speaker at this year’s Pilbara Pulse Economic Summit. It is asking Pilbara-based community and business leaders to send a postcard to Kochie - one of TV’s most respected financial commentators - requesting his attendance at the highly-anticipated event. The Chamber has already flooded letterboxes at Chanel 7’s Sydney studios with more than 250 specially designed postcards featuring stunning Pilbara photography and a simple “wish you were here” message. But it wants to double that. “Five hundred postcards, all addressed directly to Kochie, should be pretty hard to ignore,” Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry CEO John Lally said. “We’ve also got local illustrator Hayley Welsh on board to create a “Most Wanted” poster that will be sent

to anyone who is anyone in Kochie’s circle of influence,” he said. Mr Lally said the campaign aimed to make it impossible for the self-confessed “finance nerd” to decline the Chamber’s invitation to visit the Pilbara. “We need to show Kochie what he’s missing out on - the Pilbara is the beating heart of Australia’s resources industry and the resources industry is what’s keeping the Australian economy alive and well,” he said. “If we can attract Kochie and Channel 7’s television cameras to Karratha for the Pilbara Pulse Economic Summit, we can capture the attention of the entire nation.” Mr Lally urged locals to keep an eye out in their letterbox for one of the special “wish you were here” postcards. “If you get a postcard, all you have to do is sign it and pop it in the post.” Extra postcards will be available from the Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry for locals interested in supporting the Chamber’s

campaign to get Kochie to Karratha. The Pilbara Pulse is a two-day economic forum held on June 6 and 7 in Karratha, which is expected to attract hundreds of important delegates representing business interests from across the country. On day one a conference-style format will see some of the biggest names and brightest minds in Australian business, politics and finance take the stage for a program of insightful presentations and thought provoking panel discussions.

• Kochie’s wanted poster, Illustration by Hayley Welsh

Handpicked from across the country, the speakers will provide expert advice and opinion on how the Pilbara can create a rich regional legacy for future generations. While on day two local businesses will be invited to register for a series of free business development workshops. For more information about the 2012 Pilbara Pulse Economic Summit please contact the Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry on (08) 9144 1999.

Works continue on sporting precinct Final works are now underway at Bulgarra Oval to complete the multi-million dollar transformation of the popular sporting precinct. Roebourne Shire Council President Fiona White-Hartig said with the multi-purpose storage shed, electrical and lighting upgrade and softball diamond now complete the Shire has turned its attention to upgrading the tennis courts. “The lighting upgrade has been completed and works have now commenced to resurface the courts,” Councillor WhiteHartig said. “As such, the tennis courts at Bulgarra Oval will be off limits until mid-April. The co-operation and understanding from the Karratha Tennis Club during this time is greatly appreciated.” Upgrade work at the tennis courts also includes the relocation of the hit-up wall. “The hit-up wall was previously situated in the middle of the tennis pavilion, meaning it could not be used while games were taking place on the courts,” Cr White-Hartig said. “Previously only accessible through the tennis club, the new hit-up wall is located at the edge of the southern netball courts providing easy-access for the public. “We hope this decision encourages the community to

utilise this facility more often.” The newly constructed hit-up wall was completed last week and is now available for the public to access. The decision to move the hit-up wall was made in close consultation with the Karratha Tennis Club. Meanwhile work to construct the Frank Butler Community Centre is nearing completion ready for the majority of the winter sporting season. “The spectacular public artwork created by Rhino Designs will be installed on site in mid-April as the final finishing touches are put on the new Centre,” Cr White-Hartig said. “Once the project reaches completion in April work will accelerate to complete the interior fit-out with plans for the new Centre will be ready to open by June.” Works will commence next month to construct a new children’s playground, located between the netball and tennis precincts. “This exciting new children’s playground will complete the transformation of Bulgarra Oval, making it a fun recreational space for all ages,” Councillor White-Hartig said. “Construction of the playground is due to be completed by the end of June.”

The Pilbara through a different lens

• Photographer Bharat Sikka and curator Devika Daulet-Singh in Marble Bar

REQUEST FOR TENDER

For a week during March, FORM hosted iconic Indian photographers on a trip to the Pilbara, part of a long term, multi-year engagement that takes The Pilbara Project and spins it into a trans-continental collaboration, and exchanges with Asia. The photographers, Bharat Sikka, Ketaki Sheth and Sohrab Hura, along with Curator, Devika Daulet Singh of the renowned gallery, Photoink New Delhi, landed in Karratha on March 20 and immediately commented on the intense quality of the Pilbara light, and the vast expanse of the landscape. Bharat Sikka commented that it felt as though he were in an entirely different country after arriving from Perth. In the evening, the photographers took images on the Harding Dam Road, musing about the romantic qualities of the fading light, as a sunset of pink, violet and crimson gently descended over the Spinifex and hills. Compared to the bustling metropolis of New Delhi and Mumbai, with populations above twenty million

people, the space of the Pilbara awed the visitors. However, a nighttime visit to Roebourne, where they witnessed a crowd of enthusiastic basketball players revealed to them the vibrant community life enjoyed by Pilbara residents. Meeting, and photographing, senior Pilbara community leaders, Violet Samson, Pansy Hicks, and Jill Churnside in their homes also provided a unique insight into life in the region. Following visits to Cossack and Point Samson, the troupe headed to Port Hedland, but not before a stop to Mingullatharndo (5 Mile) community to see the Indigenous Nursery, developed and led by Marshall Smith. Whim Creek hotel was disappointingly closed, but it was poignant and touching to see the carefully tended grave stones of fallen war veterans from the Aboriginal community. Upon reaching Hedland, the group visited the Nelson Point BHP Billiton site, where the human scale is dwarfed by

the large-scale machinery and bustling life of this huge industrial landscape. Sohrab Hura bravely took a helicopter flight, care of The Port Hedland Port Authority, across the port, swooping over outgoing ships, laden with minerals. Over the following two days, the photographers visited FORM’s Spinifex Hill Artists, the Well Women’s Centre and got to know the people who make up Port Hedland. They were staggered by the multicultural nature of the community, which, is composed of 52 different nationalities. The trip ended with an excursion to Marble Bar, a fitting finale to the Pilbara experience, revelling in stories of gold discovery and enjoying a drive under the arching blue Pilbara sky and the sweeping Pindan ranges. The photographers all agreed that this was a unique and memorable experience and certainly a dive into a lesser -known Australia. The photographs will be part of an exhibition and publication, to tour Australia and India. For more information contact Sharmila Wood, Curator Sharmila@form.net.au’ or by telephone on, 08 9226 2799. Green light for Dampier Highway A major make-over of Dampier Highway will get underway next month after the Roebourne Shire Council adopted the final Masterplan design at its March meeting. The $2-million project will transform a major stretch of Dampier Highway with a rich tapestry of native landscaping and vibrant public art. Roebourne Shire Council President Fiona White-Hartig said the project design took inspiration from the City Centre Masterplan. “Once complete, the upgraded stretch of Dampier Highway will provide a welcoming entrance into Karratha’s revitalised city centre,” Councillor White-Hartig said. The upgrade project will extend from Balmoral Road East to

Balmoral Road West and will include beautification of six roundabouts, prominent public artwork and waterwise landscaping as well as streetlight banners, subject to approval from Horizon Power. “An open community meeting was held in November last year to seek feedback and comments on the proposed design,’ Cr White-Hartig said. “The project was well-received and all comments and feedback from the consultation meeting were considered in the final design adopted by Council.” Works on the upgrade project are scheduled to commence next month, subject to approval from Main Road WA, with the project due for

completion by August 2012. “Disruptions to traffic flow will be minimised during construction, particularly during peak times. The community’s co-operation and understanding during this time is greatly appreciated,” Cr White-Hartig said. “The Masterplan has taken future potential upgrades into consideration and will guide proposed developments such as bus stops, walking tracks and further landscaping.” The final Masterplan, prepared by appointed architects CODA, is available to download from the Shire of Roebourne website www. roebourne.wa.gov.au. The images contained in the Masterplan document are indicative only.

Combined efforts help protect turtle hatchlings Visitors to Cleaverville and Wickham beaches on the Pilbara coast are being asked to avoid driving vehicles on the beaches during the next few weeks to protect hatching turtles. New turtle conservation signs to alert people about the impacts of driving on turtle nesting beaches have been developed by the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC), funded by Rio Tinto, installed by the Shire of Roebourne and supported by the West Pilbara Turtle Program. DEC marine conservation officer Marissa Speirs said turtle hatchlings emerged from their nests to make their way to the water between December and April. “Vehicle tyres, including those of quad and dirt bikes, can crush nests and compact sand

which makes it difficult for hatchlings to break through,” she said. “Hatchlings can also get trapped in deep wheel ruts and become vulnerable to predators, dehydration and exhaustion, or even another vehicle on the beach.” Shire of Roebourne chief executive officer Collene Longmore said turtles nested in dry sand and dunes above the high tide mark. “Driving on the hard, wet sand below the high tide mark will have less of an impact but the preferred option is to keep vehicles off turtle rookeries during this time,” Ms Longmore said. “If we can reduce traffic on local beaches at this time of year we can increase turtles’ chances of survival.”

Not only will you secure your chance to win Apple’s latest gadget but you will also be making an important contribution to Roebourne Shire Council’s decisionmaking process. Roebourne Shire Council President Fiona White-Hartig said the results of last year’s survey had since been referred to by Councillors on a number of occasions when making important decisions directly affecting our communities.

“This particular survey result was considered when making the decision to install lighting at the skate park and is a great example of how having your say can really make a difference.” This year, the survey will include specific questions relating to new community facilities recently opened and under construction, as well as a question about the Shire’s traditional public holiday on the Monday, which follows the annual FeNaClNG festival and whether it should stay or fall back into line with the rest of the State. The survey will soon be made available online via the Shire’s public website www.roebourne. wa.gov.au and a link to the survey will be posted on its Facebook page called Roebourne Shire.

“These include the decision to install lighting at Nickol West Skate Park using funding from the Australian Government’s Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program,” Councillor White-Hartig said.

Manned survey booths will hosted throughout the Shire during the survey period, including at Karratha Airport, and both online and hard-copy surveys will be available from local libraries in Dampier, Wickham and Roebourne.

“As an example, the level of satisfaction with our parks, gardens and open spaces, as represented in the results of the last survey, was average at best.

It is anticipated the survey will get underway in late April and more information will be provided to the community closer to this time.

H2ome Smart Program ends but lessons live on The equivalent of 83 Olympic sized swimming pools of drinking water have been saved by 5000 householders across the North West through their participation in H2ome Smart, the largest personalised water saving program yet undertaken in WA. Water Corporation North West Regional Manager, Kerrie Chapman said residents who took part in the H2ome Smart program deserved a big pat on the back for their excellent water saving efforts. “By the end of the program participating households had received more than 3,130 water efficient showerheads and 184 dual flush toilets - all supplied and installed free of charge,” she said. “H2ome Smart also included personalised one-onone coaching to encourage waterwise behaviour, water saving workshops and sustainable gardening sessions hosted by ABC TV’s Josh Byrne, as well as the creation of a ‘best practice’ waterwise demonstration garden in South Hedland.” “During the program the Water Corporation also endorsed four new Waterwise Specialists for landscaping and irrigation installation.” Mrs Chapman said water use by some residents in the Pilbara and Kimberley was alarmingly high. “It was fantastic therefore that the community pulled together

throughout this program and really made an effort to reduce water consumption.” Residents in eligible North West towns still have the opportunity to take advantage of one final H2ome Smart offer. Mrs Chapman said eligible residents could register to have a Waterwise Garden Irrigation Specialist visit their property for free, to program their irrigation controller to ensure it was set to best suit the needs of their lawn and to ensure it complied with the current sprinkler roster. If the irrigation controller could not be programmed to comply with the sprinkler roster it would be replaced free of charge. Households can register by calling (08) 9241 1030 before April 31, 2012, but be quick as the offer is limited to the first 600 controller replacements. Businesses have also been reducing their water use by participating in a similar program called H20 Smart. By the completion of this program 262 water audits had been undertaken and all businesses identified to receive water efficient showerheads, tap aerators and dual flush toilets, had them supplied and installed for free, thanks to the H2o Smart program. The $6 million H2ome Smart program was jointly funded by the Water Corporation and the Australian Government’s Water for the Future initiative.

West Pilbara Water Supply Scheme switched to Millstream aquifer

These developments are all about creating a diverse community, where people have a range of options for living, working and recreation.

The Water Corporation has switched its water source for the West Pilbara Water Supply Scheme from Harding Dam to the Millstream aquifer.

The Mulataga community will deliver up to 2,000 residential homes in a range of residential villages, and activate the coastal node connecting Karratha and Nickol Bay.

North West Regional Manager Kerrie Chapman said the switch to the scheme’s alternative source was necessary because sustained hot weather throughout the wet season and minimal inflow had impacted water quality in Harding Dam.

Mirvac and LandCorp will be hosting a Planning Design Forum for Mulataga from 11-13 April, which will include representatives from government, the Shire of Roebourne, key consultants and community representatives integral to developing a robust masterplan for Mulataga. Mirvac and LandCorp invite the local community to attend key sessions of the Mulataga Planning Design Forum to have input into this important phase of the project. Mulataga Community Representatives Forum Thursday 12 April 2012 6.00-7.30pm All Seasons Hotel, Searipple Road Karratha

Mulataga Planning Design Closing Presentation Friday 13 April 2012 4.00-5.30pm All Seasons Hotel, Searipple Road Karratha

If you would like further information please contact Kelly Dyball from Mirvac on 08 9424 9900 or 0478 324 360

The move to the groundwater aquifer would allow the Corporation to make operational changes at Harding Dam. Mrs Chapman said residents who wanted to know more about Millstream water could visit www.watercorporation.com.au. Fact sheets were also available from the Water Corporation office in Karratha. “Water from the Millstream aquifer is very clean, free of organic matter and requires lower levels of chlorine dosing,” said Mrs Chapman. The West Pilbara water supply scheme covers Karratha, Dampier, Roebourne, Cape Lambert, Wickham and Point Sampson.

There was a car boot sale out the front and inside was filled with exciting stalls for clothes, craft and even henna tattoos. In the KidZone there was a whole lot of children’s crafts and activities. Including face painting, a quiz, drawing and so much more. But what was the most fun was the Easter egg hunt, which had children running all over the backyard trying to find plastic eggs, which they could then cash in for a chocolate egg.

$12,000 raised by Pannawonica By Blathnaid Ward and Eilish McNulty The Pannawonica community showed just how supportive and generous they are when the town hosted the 2012 Worlds Greatest Shave and Crazy Hair Day. The wonderful effort kicked off at the Pannawonica Primary School on Friday March 23, with all students and teachers donating a gold coin to have their hair sprayed crazy funky colours and styles. The school was a blaze of colour and raised $220 for the cause. The “Shave Off” event on March 24 at The Sports Club was one to remember with five brave volunteers putting their heads on the block or in some cases their legs, chest and back as the town got ready to lose some hair. The event kicked off with the wonderfully hairy Kerry Sweetman from VDM who shaved off some amazing facial hair raising nearly $2,000 with his new look. Kerry hadn’t shaved for over three years and the last time he did was also a brave shave for cancer. Our waxers were kept very busy with two of our very own Pannawonicans. Next up for the chop was our very own Health and Wellness Consultant, Bee Ward. This little Irish lass informed the crowd

that she would begin with a story from a member of the community on their experience of having cancer. She surprised everyone by explaining it was in fact her own story. Bee is over five-and-a-half years in remission from Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Her story managed to silence the crowd and even had them laughing she described some very funny incidents regarding her wig! Her story helped to drive home the need for these kinds of events and highlight how valuable they are to those living with cancer and their respective families. The privilege to cut her pigtails was auctioned off and two generous spectators raised over $1,000 for the honour to have the first cut at her hair. Peter Boyd was next up to lose his locks, who raised over $1,000 for his efforts and left the stage with a nice bald head remembering his “slip slop slap” for the next few months. His effort was soon to set a fashion with many others volunteering for a similar look. Another two brave men, Rob and Eoin volunteered to wax for this wonderful cause. Eoin, following Bee’s story, which hit home for him, spontaneously decided that if he could raise $500 he would wax his very hairy chest. His friends were very happy to make

sure he hit his mark and raised $520 in a matter of minutes once people saw the chest in question. The BBQ was in full swing with Rachel Jordan and Rob Brownlee cooking up a storm and by the end of the night everyone left with a full belly, a little less hair and / or a funky new hair style. The Pannawonica event has raised over $12,316 for The Leukaemia Foundation with trickles of funds still coming through. The Kinetic HWCs would like to thank all who helped to make this such a successful event, including our hairdresser for the night Deb Ferguson and all our waxers, our volunteers who put forward their heads, backs, legs and chest for such a wonderful cause, The Sports Club for allowing us to host the event and for all their support on the night, RioTinto who sponsored our barbeque, our cooks, Rob Brownlee our wonderful MC for the event and our very own Katie Stringer from Kinetic who was there from Perth to offer her help and support on the night. Finally, the biggest thanks must go to all those who sponsored, donated and supported the event and those who were there at the event to share in the atmosphere and magic of the night. It was a massive community effort and the funds raised will soon be joined to the Australian total to be used and appreciated by someone dealing with cancer and their families.

St Paul’s swimming carnival Students from St Paul’s Primary School, year’s four to seven participated in a fabulous faction swimming carnival on Friday, March 30. Principal Santino Giancono said it was fantastic to see students having so much fun and displaying such commendable sportsmanship. “A huge thank you goes to Mrs Smith for organising and coordinating the day and to all the staff and parent helpers that made

the day such a success due to their efforts,” he said. “The students were all wonderful and really got into the day and their sportsmanship shone through.” The winning faction team went to Nagle, second was Horton, third was Warner and fourth was McCarthy. The Spirit Shield was awarded to Warner for their team support during the day.

Masters genius By Chris ‘Polly’ Ryan A huge crowd of people, a bike rider and a red dog were treated to some high quality performances in the ‘clash of the round’ AFL 9’s Masters game played down in Bulgarra on Thursday, March 29. With both teams undefeated going into this round, the game between the ‘Shirts’ and the ‘Reds’ was everything and more it was promised to be, with the armchair critics prediction of a close affair being proved right; a margin of one goal separating the teams at the end. The game started at a frantic pace with ‘Shirts’ midfielder Shane Katauskas getting plenty of early touches, setting up his forwards with many scoring opportunities. Supporting him in the Ruck and forwardline, were father and son combination Mick and Brodie Newman, with Mick putting his name on the ‘Mark of the year’ early and Brodie showing signs of brilliance with three first quarter goals - showing up his much older opponents. The ‘Reds’ ever reliable players in Stan Begg and Shane White combined well, counter attacking the ‘Shirts’ forward moves, but their hard work efforts were not being rewarded by the ‘Reds’ forwards, who were fumbling marks and missing some easy set shot goals. By quarter time the ‘Shirts’ were up by two. During the break the ‘Reds’ made some much needed changes, putting Marty Shepherd in the backline, and adding Wayne Sharpe into the middle. They also appeared to have employed a two-pronged attack in Santino Giancono and first gamer Martin Richards.

Santino was wreaking havoc up forward close to goal having many scoring shots, whilst Martin Richards was chipping in across the half forward line with important marks. Paul Nolan stood tall for the ‘Shirts’ backline and did well to reduce the number of goals kicked by the ‘Reds’ for the quarter, but a complete lack of support for him from the ‘Shirts’ midfielders allowed the ‘Reds’ to go in at half time with the ascendancy. The third quarter was tense, with both teams trying to gain some momentum. Jack for the ‘Shirts’ started to get some touches as did Bomber for the ‘Reds’, but every forward move by the ‘Shirts’ seemed to hit a brick wall in Big Jason Ashworth whilst the marking ability of the ‘Reds’ forwards once again being their stumbling point. Fatigue started to set in on both sides and it was going to take something special for a team to win. The ‘Shirts’ placed their reliance in the hands of the youth and the combination of Jesse Whittel and Brodie Newman up forward for the ‘Shirts’ became too much for the older, weary ‘Reds’ backline; the Shirts taking the points, and Brodie finishing off with seven goals comfortable winning the ‘man of the match’ award. Whilst there were no kids running out with footy records and asking for signatures from the stars of yesteryear, or no paparazzi to capture the mixed emotions of celebrations and disappointments, there was some definitely some memories for all to take home, and the added incentive to come back next week and do it again.

• Martin Willison (#20) , Brad Manuel (#25) and Ryan Escott(#222) vie for the holeshot in the seniors

Inter club MX Challenge in TP By Peter Coope Round two of the Tom Price/Paraburdoo inter club MX challenge was held in Tom Price last weekend. The practice was an exciting affair with a couple of bikes in the seniors colliding in their second practice lap to have the ambulance out there straight up. Both riders walked away with minor scratches and bruises. The day was non-stop with juniors, seniors and even the ladies getting in on the action. The 50cc class saw William Wall take out the points for the day in the junior Division 1 class, with John Manuel coming a close second. Division 2 saw Kaj Radcliffe on the podium and Jaykim Wall bringing in second place. Zantasia Bryers-Shelley showed great form getting out there and mixing it up with the boys to show that the girls can go just as hard, unfortunately mechanical issues saw her chances disappear. The 65cc class was a fast affair with Jayden Cooper taking out first place in the senior class and Lachlan Hood getting the glory in the junior 65cc class. All eyes were on the track for the 85cc class with Levi Widnall, Trent Markich and Connor Cooper putting their all in to have the crowd holding their breath till the very end. Throttles were twisted full open from the moment the gate dropped till the wave of the chequered flag, with all four of the races being neck and neck from go to whoa. The end result saw Connor Cooper and Levi Widnall even points for first place with Trent Markich coming in second. Trent won the holeshot title for the day with all four of his starts setting the pace. Jayden Cooper has made an impressive effort to his 85cc junior career, coming in first in the junior division. Racing both 65cc and 85cc for the day had the boy under the pump, but he did well to complete all 8 of his races. Levi Widnall also ran two classes, which saw

him putting in a great effort in the 85cc, and the Junior Lites division on his Suzuki 250. Jonathon Escott from Paraburdoo was too strong for him and took the win for the class. The seniors threw the dust and rocks in a lineup that had Martin Willison from Para out front and TP Club president, Brad Manuel hunting him down. Martin had the speed in the end and saw him take the win. Ryan Escott from Paraburdoo was putting in the hard work until his bike threw its chain on the last lap. Ross Oreo from TP took out the quads senior division with no competition and James Markich the Vets division, even after he went down in the practice laps. With the introduction of the ladies class, three took to the track to get amongst it. Tracie Hazell, Naomi Bryers-Shelley and Casey Arrowsmith showed they had what it takes to race .All classes in the seniors were racing together, and the ladies went just as hard if not harder than some of the guys. Casey Arrowsmith took the win for the class. None of these motox events would be possible without help from local volunteers who man the canteen, do the scoring and also the flaggies, so a big thanks out to those people. Also a huge thank you to the St. John Ambo volunteers and cadets who make the racing possible and patch us up when we need it, top effort Ladies and Gents. The next round of the inter club challenge is in Paraburdoo on April 22, so get your bikes ready and get to the track and sign up, just come down and have a go. Keep a close watch on those calenders folks, with the Tom Price club holding the first round of the North West Championships on the weekend of May 5 and 6. Practice will be held on the Saturday with racing starting early Sunday morning, so keep your calendar clear for that weekend and get your backsides trackside for heart pounding action, here at Tom Price the mecca for motocross.

Social rides take off Local mountain biking enthusiasts Damien Muller and Tristan Wood-Hill have initiated a social riding scene, meeting weekly to share their increasing knowledge of the Pilbara landscape experience. Both men are members of the Burrup Mountain Bike Club (BMBC) and have established Karratha Mountain Bikers (MTBERS) as a separate social group to increase riding opportunities. Damien has many years experience in mountain biking, recreational riding and road racing in the Pilbara and surrounds and across several locations Australia wide. Tristan has also bashed around for years and has more recently attended several fundamental and advanced riding clinics in Perth. “Our passion is to ride with others and show them how it can be done adventurously, but also safely,” Tristan said. Riders meet every Wednesday evening at 7.30pm and depart from either the BMX track off Rosemary Road or the Karratha Tourist Centre. Each session alternates between a starter ride, for anyone interested in giving it a go, and an advanced ride offering a more technical and longer challenge. “Our rides include experience in track management, riding techniques and general knowledge about mountain biking and we’ve been really encouraged by the strong growth in such a short timeframe as well as the number of ladies who are keen to try it out,”

Tristan said. Occasional Sunday rides are also offered and could be anywhere from 10 to 80km. Most rides feature experiences in cross country, downhill and free ride runs, maximizing the landscape and elevation available. Preparation in this sport is essential. Riders need to make sure their bikes have been serviced and are in good working order with disc brakes, high quality tyres and a night-light fitted to the bike. Another light on the helmet is also recommended. Riders also need to bring along about two litres of water, a helmet (apparently some people forget these!), gloves and a kit for repairing chains and punctures on the go. “Eddie at Scott Cycles will be more than happy to help you prepare and is offering a 10% discount if you mention we sent you,” Tristan said. Karratha MTBERS has been informally running since December. They set up a Facebook page in March and have 50 members and between six-10 riders turn up every week. Information about their rides are posted regularly. Damien and Tristan encourage you to check out their Facebook page, KarrathaMTBers and give mountain biking a go. For those more experienced, “we would love to meet you and share the passion!”

Calling all Karratha dancers Tuesday, April 10, St Luke’s College gymnasium will be the venue for a series of four dance workshops – two tap and two intensive jazz – taught by a highly experienced teacher and ex-competitive dancer from Perth’s top dance company. The workshops will be open to any enthusiastic dance students in the Karratha community who are looking to broaden their experience, develop skills and indulge in a day of school holiday dancing fun with a mix of students from all schools. With dancing schools closing their doors for the holiday period, these workshops hope to attract those tap and jazz students who can’t bear the thought of taking off their dancing shoes for two weeks! The tap workshops will involve a basic skill and joint flexibility warm-up (including correct theory), centre footwork, across the floor tapping combinations and some fun choreography. The jazz workshops – designed to push students to their limits - will involve an intensive warm-up, stretching and floor work (including

• Competitors take to the water for the first event

Annual Dampier Triathlon turns 30 The Nickol Bay Triathlon Club held their 30th anniversary annual Dampier Triathlon last weekend held at the Hampton Harbour Yacht Club with 35 entries. The ‘Rio Tinto’ long course entailed a 1km swim, 24km bike ride and a 7.4km run, while the ‘Horizon Power’ Short Course entailed a 500m swim, 12km bike ride and a 3.7km run. Eighteen people took to the long course, 22 in the short, including two juniors and five teams. During the race, some of the ladies were on brand new road bikes, racing on them for the first time, including short course winner, Tania Neeson.

The NBTC would like to thank all their sponsors and prize contributors including: Rio Tinto, Horizon Power, Shire of Roebourne, Woodside, Liftmec, BGC, Scotts Cycles, Harvey Norman, Water Corporation, DPA, Retravison, Life and Soul Gym, Kayeni Health and Fitness, Tee Wai Manufacturing, Hampton Harbour Boat Club, Sea Rescue, Dampier Mankini Kayak Club and the Dampier Camp School. They would also like to thank all of the individual volunteers that gave up their Sunday morning to come out and stand in the heat, direct racers, hand out water and cheer the competitors on.

A tyre blow out before the race even started saw Les Oakley look like he would be missing out on his first race of the season. However, a mad dash around fellow racers found that another competitor had a spare bike for him to use. Other competitors, Karis Wilson and Wayne Harden used the race as preparation for the Cairns Long Course Triathlon (part of the Cairns Adventure Festival) they are training for in June. The overall long course male winner went to Bevan Stirling and the female winner went to Kate Shyrock.
