Supporting local businesses

As part of our Buy Local campaign, we hit the streets to see why you think is it important to buy local and support local businesses. CHRIS MAS It is important to keep local businesses afloat when there are so many huge companies out there. Our prices are the same as Perth, and when people buy online, they have to pay for freight so it ends up costing more. Plus buying locally, you can try things out and make sure the product is right for you.

FRAN MCCOMBE It is important because you are supporting small local businesses that don’t work in the big industries and who supply goods and services to the residents of the town.

BELINDA MCFARLAND It is important to support the small business industry as you can touch and feel before you buy. It is right there in the shop so you don’t have to order it in.

ASH DOHERTY You don’t have to wait for transport. If you don’t support local businesses, they won’t be able to afford to stay open.

MATILDA RUSSEL Most people who own local businesses have lived in the town for many years, and they need people’s service to be able to provide for their family.

CARROL DARGIE It is important to keep local people employed and it gives the kids who are finishing school a stepping stone into the workforce.

Corey to perform new album at free sunset session Local Corey Colum will be performing live at the Karratha Visitors’ Centre next Sunday to celebrate the release of his new album. KVC Manager Barry ‘Bazz’ Harris said that he thought it would be a nice sunset gig and also to see if the centre is capable of holding this type of event in the future. “Sort of like testing the waters,” Bazz said.

“Because we are seen by some locals as not offering anything of use to the local community and right from day one of taking over the management of the centre. “I believe the KVC should be for everyone in and out of tourist season and it shouldn’t matter if you are classed as local, FIFO or tourist. “There should be something for everyone.”

Corey will be performing in the afternoon on Sunday, April 28 at sunset from 5.30-7.30pm. Bring your own picnic basket and deck chairs as Corey plays his new album, which is available at the centre for $25. This is a free event, but you must RSVP as numbers are limited, so call the Karratha Visitor Centre on 9144 4600.

School holiday program ends with a big hit The second week of the Karratha Entertainment Centre’s April school holiday program finished with a bang at the superhero disco. In week two, children were able to play teeball and tennis at the super sports day, have a splash in the pool at the excursion to the Karratha Aquatic Centre and enjoy a slip and slide and other water games on the Wet ‘n’ Wild Day. Towards the end of the week, children were able to relax a bit, wearing their pyjamas while watching The Muppets. On the Friday, the school holiday program ended and kids were able to dress up as their favourite superhero and dance the day away. The Karratha Entertainment Centre hold a school holiday program during every school break, so keep your eyes out for more fun at the KEC during the July school holidays. For more information contact the KEC on 9186 8556.

All things ‘fish’! • Riley Mel and Ben Kievit

The Department of Fisheries staff were at Centro Karratha to answer all the community’s fishing needs last week as part of their Easter school holiday program. Each day, different activities were held including fishy crafts, where children were able to attend with their most creative ‘fishy’ ideas and walk away with some bright, colourful marine friends. Last Tuesday, they were able to learn the in’s and out’s of a fish… literally, when they dissected a barramundi at

Free Weekly 21 - 22 April 2012 Dampier beach. Participants were able to find out what the fish ate for lunch and discover how to determine the age of a fish, just like a real marine biologist. “I really like learning about fish and this sounded interesting so I decide to join in,” Ben Kievit said about the fish dissection. “I can now tell how old a fish is, what body parts there are and how to cut one open. “Plus you get to find out what it had for lunch.

“We all like to learn, so this is really good.” On Wednesday, kids were able to take a mangrove walk along the Back Beach, where a guided walk was undertaken along the lands edge to discover the plants and animals that rely on the mangroves and mudflats to survive. On the last day of the program, a sand castle competition was held at Dampier Beach, where kids got a team together and made some creative ideas come to life.

Good Times Entertainment brought a whole new meaning to ‘Old School’ when they presented Pacifik Beatz at the All Seasons Hotel last weekend. You might remember the guys from Good Times Entertainment as the party starting guys who brought Brisbane DJ Owe to Karratha for another Pacifik Beatz showdown in March. The dance floor was pumping with island reggae, old school, hip-hop and New Zealand sounds from Perth’s finest DJ, Stylz Ali. People left the All Seasons still wanting the party to continue with comments like a ‘fudging good night out at the All Seasons with the DJ from NZ’ and ‘hearing all the old NZ music was choice’.

Night of laughs at Apex state convention Apexians travelled from all over the state last weekend to Karratha for the 2012 Apex state convention. The Icon played host to the convention treating them to delicious food and customer service from owner Sean Throssel. The state convention is held every year to recognize the contributions to each of the Apex group’s local communities. Karratha Apex was able to showcase the Pilbara’s unique beauty to their Apexian counterparts. On the night, Geraldton Apexian, Bruce Sherwood was congratulated on his 12 years of service with Apex,

and given a life membership award. Mr Sherwood stood out on the night with his bright gold vest and said the vest had travelled all over WA, as far down as Esperance, since he first joined. Both him and Karratha Apexian Guy Shepard had a laugh over the vest, as it has been ‘borrowed’ at state conventions over the years, travelling between the different Apex groups. “One year, one of the Apex group’s took photos of the vest travelling through Esperance and sent photos around to everyone,” Mr Sherwood laughed.

Another stand out on the night was the Geraldton group with their ‘cyclone preparation’ get up, with high-vis vests, beer hard hats and when they lined up in a row their hats spelt Geraldton! Local band Snatch broke down into a duo on the night to form Impact Matter, who entertained the hard working men and women. Apex meet twice a month at the RSL. If you would like to know more about Apex, or just like to contribute to your local community, you can call 0428 711 956 or follow them on Facebook.

Tint-a-Car and Novus Autoglass Karratha join forces On Monday, April 16, Tint-a-Car and Novus Autoglass officially opened up their new showroom and workshop in the Karratha Industrial Area. Business owners Nigel and Kathii Richards have run local business Novus Autoglass for a number of years. They identified a need for an automotive glass tinting service in Karratha. Nigel and Kathii’s Marketing Manager, Jamie Nelmes said that with side and rear glass being replaced at Novus Autoglass on a regular basis, it was becoming increasingly difficult to have these glasses tinted locally, in a timely manner and at a reasonable price, so it made sense to partner both companies to bring and integrate the best quality products to the Pilbara. “Prior to the opening, no official advertising of the opening had been done and numerous bookings and enquires were flooding in,” he said. “We believe that this is an excellent

indication and we are delighted to be open and ready as there is a significant demand for this service and to satisfy our customers’ needs. “We want to give people in the Pilbara a fair deal and Karratha has one of the highest rates of Internet shopping in Australia based on population. “This information motivated us to adopt the same advertised retail prices as the Tint-a-Car stores in Perth. “

“We want to give people in the Pilbara a fair deal” - Jamie Nelmes Along with Perth prices they have set themselves apart from most remote area businesses by designing a unique customer friendly showroom. “We designed our fully air-conditioned showroom with business people and families in mind,” he said. “We have free Wi-Fi so business people can keep working if they like and mums and dads can connect to the internet on their iPad, mobile phone or wireless device to browse or keep the kids busy. “The showroom also has a large screen television and a comfy lounge to allow customers to sit back and relax while their vehicle is being worked on.”

• Chatting with locals about Tint a Car and Novus Karratha joining forces

Tint-a-Car is the industry leader in the supply and application of tint films with over 100 stores internationally and has been a household name in WA since 1972.

• State manager Ian Lee with regional managers Kathii and Nigel Richards Tint-a-Car will provide a reliable and necessary service to the local community - they live and breathe customer satisfaction.

Tint-a-Car or Novus Autoglass please contact Tint-a-Car on (08) 9185 6669 and Novus Autoglass on (08) 9144 1160.

Tint-a-Car Group State Manager Ian Lee attended the official opening of the newest store in Australia and said it would be the most modern and impressive tinting facility in WA possibly the country. He was excited that Karratha would now have the same opportunity for quality tinting as people living in the city. Brian’s gift By Courtney Bertling Earlier this year, the Red Dog 4WD Club held a car boot sale to raise money for one of their members, Brian Swavely, who had been diagnosed with motor neurone disease in March 2010. After all of the fundraising, the club had raised a whopping $18,000 to go towards medical bills, equipment, services and much more to make Brian’s life a bit more comfortable. However, Brian was a giver, not a taker, so at first he did not want the money. He wanted the money to go back into the community to help other people suffering from the same disease. Well, Brian got that wish. A week after the car boot sale was held, Brian passed away on March 5th, with his family and friends by his side. And in keeping with the memory of Brian and what he wanted, his wife, Peggy Swavely and the Red Dog 4WD Club, decided to donate the remainder of the money ($12,500) to the Motor Neurone Disease Association of WA. So, on Wednesday, April 18, care advisor’s Carly Davies and Cherylyn Vickery flew into town to accept the cheque on behalf of the association and to thank everyone for all their hard work. “The cheque will be used to help

Free Weekly 21 - 22 April 2012

other people with motor neurone disease, helping them provide external services, equipment, any costs that incur during their process. So this is a great benefit for them,” Ms Davies said. “So we would just like to thank Peggy, the Palliative Care Service, Fuzzy and all of the community who have been involved with the raising of money and awareness for motor neurone disease.” “Motor neurone disease is such a devastating condition and it affects individuals and families in the communities. “It re-enforces your faith in human nature when you see something like this can bring a community together to do something like this and raise money to help somebody else and the carers,” Ms Vickery said. “The funding will go straight into patient services, equipment, whatever we can do to make their time a bit more comfortable.” Peggy would like to say a big thank you to the supporters and to the community. “We couldn’t have done it without them,” she said. “The hospital bed has been donated back to Palliative Care at the Nickol Bay Hospital, which has a donation plaque on it.

• Carly Davies from the Motor Neurone Disease Association of WA and Peggy Swavely “And hopefully the money we have raised will help other people, and get the Motor Neurone Disease Association out there so they can do what they do best and support the carers and people affected by the disease.” Peggy would like to thank the Palliative Care Service for all their support through Brian’s journey, the Red Dog 4WD Club for showing that friends are the family members that people choose, all of the community members who supported the fundraising and the Motor Neurone Disease Association of WA for continually supporting people through the disease.

Community comes together to help the homeless By Courtney Bertling Priscilla Luffman is 37-weeks pregnant with no where to live. But with the help of some supportive and understanding locals and the Pilbara Community Legal Service, Priscilla and her soon-to-be born daughter Nevaeh, will be able to survive in this world. The Pilbara Community Legal Service is a not-for-profit organisation that supports all community members regarding tenancy and financial assistance. They also have the Homelessness Program, which is a national partnership in assistance housing, where so many houses can be allocated per financial year, which is funded through the

Department of Child Protection and works with the Department of Housing. Margaret Gordon from the Pilbara Community Legal Service said that Priscilla walked into the office one day with nowhere to stay and heavily pregnant. “Priscilla presented that she desperately needed assistance and that is when we got her into the Karratha Women’s Refuge and we are now working with her quite closely to give her the support that she needs,” she said. But it’s not just a house that is needed for this small family, items that most people take for granted like baby clothes, accessories and household items have been donated to Priscilla from the community.

Priscilla said that before she felt like she was walking around with her head down, she didn’t have any baby clothes or accessories and she was worried. “I was feeling lost and thinking that I was bad mum, not having a place to stay and anything for my baby,” she said. “But this week, I’m walking around with my head up, I feel a lot lighter and I have got a lot of support from everybody. “I would like to say thank you, to everybody, I am so grateful. “The other day I was in tears because it has made me so happy. “I thought I was going to be alone on this but Fran and Julie (locals who helped with donations) have been amazing.

• Priscilla Luffman and all her donated baby items with Margaret Gordon from the Pilbara Legal Community Service “I wrote a text to Julie and said that God gifted me with three angels and those are Margaret, Julie and Fran.” Priscilla is due to give birth to Nevaeh Kymarley AmandaMerwess in a few weeks. But it is not the only heart-felt story coming from the Pilbara Community Legal Service; Ms Gordon is also currently working with a homeless elderly man who is terminally ill with cancer.

Mother’s Day Fun Run The Mother’s Day Classic Fun Run and walk is being held in Karratha on Sunday May 13. This follows the success of last year’s inaugural event, giving the community another chance to participate at the Bulgarra Ovals at the Karratha Entertainment Centre. Entrants can choose the 4km walk or run, or an 8km run for those of us who are more energetic. There will be lots of prizes on offer and will include entertainment and activities for the kids; so it will be a great morning out for the whole family. Karratha Committee Co-Chair Jen Hill, says the Committee expects the

event to be a huge success with planning already well underway. “Last year’s event was so successful, with the nation’s highest fundraising individual and group being from Karratha,” she said. “This highlights the generosity of our community.” Like last year’s event, the Committee will be seeking volunteers and corporate sponsorship. Committee Co-Chair Kelly Case, said volunteers and sponsorship are critical to the success of the day. “We are overwhelmed with the support and interest already being shown by both the

“It is very hard because we have nothing for men up here,” she said. “There is no emergency accommodation, so that is a real issue, and it is vey hard with my position to be able to support people like that as there is no other avenues other then telling them to couch surf with relatives. “Which most of these houses are already over crowded as it is.”

Battle of the wits for much-needed funds By Courtney Bertling Karratha United Community staff is putting the fun into fundraising for charity with a trivia night at the All Seasons Sports Bar on April 28. So, if you like a fun night out with your friends, then gather the crew and your wits and join the United Community team for a fun evening. In support of Pilbara and Kimberley Care Inc., United Community Credit Union Karratha Branch is proudly sponsoring the trivia night to help raise much-needed funds for this great organisation, so they can continue to provide vital services to the Pilbara communities. Pilbara and Kimberley Care Inc. provide a variety of services to the community including domestic assistance, social support, home nursing, transportation and respite care. Karratha United Community branch manager Amanda Letcher said that every United Community branch is given the opportunity to choose a local not-for-profit organisation to help raise needed funds for their community partner. “By raising funds for PKC we are able to improve their service they provide to the community,” she said.

“Example of this is to upgrade their equipment used to transport their meals on wheels to keep food warm or cold, also to provide better showering facilities for those that require assistance in day to day activities. “These are just a few of the examples we hope to achieve with this one event. ” Ms Letcher said this event will be one fundraising night to remember with amazing prizes donated by the local businesses of Karratha. “This is truly a selfless night to help our community to come together and help those in need and raise awareness,” she said. “Over the coming months we are aiming to raise $10,000.” There will also be a silent auction, raffles and games on during the evening. The venue for the event has been kindly donated by the All Seasons Hotel where the event will start at 6.30pm. Tickets are available at Karratha United Community Branch at Karratha Centro and cost $10 each, or a table of 10 for $100. If you have any further questions please contact Amanda, Jessica or Rachael on 9185 3466 or email karratha@ unitedcommunity.com.au.

Roebourne based multimedia company Weerianna Street Media launched an exciting new indigenous digital communications initiative called iCampfire.tv last week. iCampfire.tv is part of WSM’s Digital Dreamtime Project, a series of multimedia projects all designed and created with the sole objective of exploring and exploiting digital technologies that will assist in the identification, preservation and documentation of Australian indigenous culture. WSM’s Creative Director and founder Tyson Mowarin (and a proud Ngarluma man from Roebourne, Western Australia) said that the campfire is an integral part of Australian indigenous culture. “It’s a special place where aboriginal culture, knowledge, history and governance is discussed and exchanged,” he said. “And it’s a place where stories are told, songs are sung, dance is performed and meals are prepared, cooked and shared. “iCampfire.tv is a place to broadcast, share and preserve Australian indigenous culture. It’s a place for everyone.” In mid 2012, WSM will launch a dramatic overhaul of the current website and will roll out Version 2.0 featuring powerful social networking software loaded with technology rich features, all designed to encourage sharing and cultural knowledge exchange. Mr. Mowarin is passionate about making the channel available for everyone, not just indigenous Australians. “iCampfire.tv is a special destination where everyday people from all over the world can experience and learn about Australian indigenous culture and history,” he said. “It’s a keeping place, a sharing place and an inspirational, educational digital gallery. “We welcome content contributions from everyone – especially filmmakers and photographers. “My dream for iCampfire.tv is to make a place for everyone to share indigenous culture. “To make this dream possible we’re working really hard on a brand new iCampfire.tv member experience that will provide visitors and members with their own social profile and channel, a

If you enjoy motorbikes you will understand what I mean.” The first round this year is being held in Tom Price, with the following rounds being held by Karratha on June 16 and 17, Wickham on June 30 and July 1 , Paraburdoo on July 28 and 29, Port Hedland on August 25 and 26, and the final round plus the trophy presentations night will be in Newman on September 22 and 23.

Last game of hockey for the season It was all action this week at the Bulgarra Tennis Courts for the last hockey game of the season. We had a great turnout of new faces and it made for a high scoring, fast paced, action packed game. Newcomer Shane and veteran Tom Gouke made a formidable duo in the centre for the red team, both scoring highly and quickly distributing the ball throughout the field. The yellow team hit back with fast paced James and Joe working hard in attack to score quickly.

Both players were also dominant in defence and strongly supported by newcomer Ben. The final score was down to the pinch with yellow the victors at 9-8. Hockey will resume on May 2 with ‘Have a go day’ and registration for the Men’s Elite 6’s and Women’s Super 7’s competition. The women’s games will start every Wednesday at 6.30pm, while the men take to the courts at 7.30pm at the Bulgarra tennis courts. The junior hockey season

Inclusion WA included lawn bowls to finish their school holiday sporting activities on Tuesday, with the biggest numbers ever seen in the town. Inclusion WA is a notfor-profit organisation open to people aged seven-30 of all abilities. However it was targeted at people with disabilities and their siblings in particular. Inclusion WA works with community groups and sporting clubs in Karratha and surrounding areas providing a multi-sport holiday program to those of all abilities living in and around Karratha. This time around, kids were able to learn how to swim, play lawn bowls, basketball and Aussie rules football. Denver De Cruz, who is just one of the people behind the organisation, said that the reason why they were up here was to better connect the community and offer more inclusive sport direct during the school holiday period. “The response we have gotten is really positive; it has been our most successful, since we started this time last year with numbers of up to 40,” he said. In the past, Inclusion WA has offered a range of sports including, tee ball, netball, cricket, badminton and much more.

“Our expertise is to work with what already exist in the community, so we don’t run sports ourselves but we facilitate that through sporting groups in the community,” he said. Mr De Cruz said that the most important benefit of the Inclusion WA program is that more and more kids are getting involved. “Not just kids with disabilities, but mainstream kids, everyone is joining in and having fun,” he said. “It’s a really powerful tool to see mainstream kids mixing in with kids with disabilities. “It’s not just about teaching kids with disabilities that they can participate in mainstream sports, but also about educating the mainstream kids that just because some people may have a disability, it doesn’t mean that they have to be isolated. “It is all about adapting, and I think small communities like Karratha do that really well. “Most of these kids are really well known in the community and I think that is a really powerful message for mainstream kids to take out of it as well.” For more information about getting involved with Inclusion WA contact Denver De Cruz on 0404 033 683 or Matt Shaw on 0419 725 168.

Outstanding feature race The Karratha Enduro and Motocross Club held their second club round of the season last weekend. Terry Eastwell said as usual, Karratha put on a fine warm day, which attracted about 80 riders across 14 classes ranging from 50cc littlies to the open class. “Outstanding riders on the day would have to be the three place getters in the feature race

at the end of the day,” he said. “This was a spectacular event with some very close racing by all, but eventually seeing Tyson Lind victorious with Dave Alexander second and Nicholas Putland rounding out the top three. “Another stand out rider was young Grant Eastwell who rode two classes for the day in 85cc and his first year in the 250cc junior lites class, taking

the win in both.” Mr Eastwell said that it has to be said that all the riders on the day put on a great spectacle and the juniors in particular. “They showed their bravery and a huge amount of courage as they put their developing skills to the test to negotiate the track and be first to the checkered flag,” he said.

Invites you to join them for a social get together at Bulgarra oval on Saturday the 28th of April at 3:00pm Everyone is invited to come down and get involved andto meet all the teams.

Thommo takes out second Skid Saturday for the year By Chantelle Dalgarno

to escape the 150C coolant explosion.

Last weekend’s Skid Saturday turned into a survival of the fittest, with competitors pushing their cars beyond their limits to take home their piece of the $500 Rhamp Mechanical and United Oils prize pool.

With trophies supplied by Karratha Suburu, prize money donated by Rhamp Mechanical and oils donated to first and second by United Oils, local businesses are showing their support in force to help Nickol Bay Speedway provide a venue to motivate revheads to prove it on the pad, instead of being an a** on the asphalt.

While six regular “club cars” were missing from the field due to mechanical issues, eleven competitors proved it on the pad, with plenty of spills and thrills throughout the night to keep the 500+ strong crowd entertained. For the second Skid Saturday in a row, Brad “Thommo” Thompson took home first place, while Russell Casey improved on his previous third position to sneak into second place and secondtime competitor Brett Dohnt took home third in his Ford. The unexpected excitement for the night came from Darren Mackenzie, of Cobra Marine in his familiar black HT ute, with a sudden three-four metre high geyser erupting from his radiator, causing Darren, his passenger, the Infield Marshals and Racing Official to take a not-so-graceful leap backwards

• FIFO vs the Community

FIFO and community battle

The intermission entertainment proved to be a success, with two-dozen spectators joining in on the Casting Competition.

On Wednesday, April 11, a team of FIFO workers from Gap Ridge Village and some members of the community, Karratha Indoor Cricket Association and West Pilbara Cricket Association locked horns in an indoor cricket match.

Each took home a prize pack valued at $50, which included a shirt, stubby cooler, free entry into the next Club Meet and a free slushie drink from Bec’s Brainfreeze. The overall winner made the family very happy with a Family Season Pass, giving them free entry to all Nickol Bay Speedway events for 2012. Next weekend, Saturday, April 28, will be the first race meet of the season with all racers taking to the track to start accumulating points for the season long Club Meet competition.

• Lining up, ready to go starting at 7pm. Adults $10, 7-16yrs $5, kids under seven free. No BYO alcohol as NBSC is a licensed venue and bar and canteen facilities are supplied at the track.

Spectators are invited to bring their BMX bikes to compete in the intermission entertainment: a Run & Ride Relay Race!

• Brad ‘Thommo’ Thompson takes out first place... again

Thirty lucky spectators will win prize packs for participating with the overall winner taking home a Custom Built Scott Cycles Performance Scooter, valued at over $300 and proudly donated by Scott Cycles. Gates open at 6pm with racing

Gap Ridge Village hosted the match at their facilities having just completed an in house competition. The night was a great success with both sides playing some good cricket in a close contest. The Gap Ridge Village team batted first scoring 59 runs, which the community team chased down, finishing up with a total of 69 runs. The match was the first of what will hopefully be a series of sporting contests throughout the year to encourage participation opportunities in local sport.

• The smell of rubber lingered around the track

Thanks to the Gap Ridge Symmetry by Sodexo Health and Lifestyle Coordinators and local community members for organising the contest.
