Starting with the 50cc class Mitchell Bond was on the money until his engine blew and was unable to fight for first with Sammy Armstrong.

Darryl Collins will admit 2011 was patchy, but after winning race one of the Burrup Mountain Bike Club 2012 Race Series, he has set a high standard and earned new respect from the other elite riders. After being neck and neck all race, Collins broke away and won by 32 seconds in 57:31, when Tristan Wood-Hill slipped a gear on the last rocky, fire-trail climb of the course. Scary Spider Gary Myers proved he is not scared of spiders, unlike the rest of us, when he took this picture of a golden orb weaver in Dampier recently. “It was certainly larger than indicated on a spider web site,” he said. “I spend my free time taking photographs of the wonderful diversity of wild life around Karratha.” Gary used a Nikon L 810.

MUNICIPAL HERITAGE INVENTORY The Shire of Roebourne’s Municipal Heritage Inventory (MHI) was created in 1996 and lists all buildings and sites within the Shire that are of historical and heritage significance to the community. The MHI serves as a resource document reflecting the value placed by the community on our shared heritage, as well as providing information relevant to builders, planners and land developers in the Shire of Roebourne. During 2012 the MHI will be undergoing a major review process which will see current entries updated and new proposals assessed for inclusion. The public is invited to submit input to this review process. The existing MHI can be viewed at the Shire Libraries, at the Shire Offices Reception or at www.roebourne.wa.gov.au/planning. If you would like to propose a new site for inclusion into the MHI or submit any feedback, please contact history. officer@roebourne.wa.gov.au or call 9185 2553 by 5pm Thursday 31 May 2012. The tail is short and has a white fringe. In flight, the black flight feathers on the wings are easily seen from below. The large, hooked bill is grey with a darker tip, and the eye is dark brown. The legs and feet are cream-white, with long black talons (claws). The sexes are similar. Males (around 75cm in height) are slightly smaller than females (up to 85cm). The wingspan is about 2m. Young Sea Eagles are brown as juveniles then gradually acquire the complete adult plumage by their fourth year. White-bellied Sea Eagles are a common sight along coastal areas of Australia. They form permanent pairs that inhabit territories throughout the year.

Their loud, “goose-like” honking call is a familiar sound, particularly during the breeding season. Birds are normally seen, perched high in a tree, or soaring over waterways and adjacent land. The White-bellied Sea Eagle feeds mainly off aquatic animals, such as fish, turtles and sea snakes, but it takes birds and mammals as well. It is a skilled hunter, and will attack prey up to the size of a swan. They harass terns and ospreys, forcing them to drop any food that they are carrying. It nests from May to October, in large nests high above the water, in trees or on coastal cliffs. Normally two eggs are laid. In addition to Australia, the species is found in New Guinea, Indonesia, China, Southeast Asia and India. Sailfish hauled onto ships By Courtney Bertling Pilbara Echo have received photos of sailfish and other pelagic species being hauled onto large overseas ships off Dampier. Many local anglers are disappointed by the lack of monitoring of these ships. By law every fisherman is required to have a current WA Fishing License, stick to bag and size limits, put back any protected species and encouraged to fish for the future. Locals are hopeful that these rules apply to all International Foreign Ships entering our waters. When one Damiper local, who would like to remain anonymous, reported this to a Fisheries officer at the Dampier boat ramp last year, he told the local that there wasn't much they could do about it and 'didn't seem interested'. "Many other locals in Dampier have said they have had the same comment when they have reported fishing on these ships," they said. "Obviously nothing was done, as 12 months later it is still happening and a lot more ships fishing. "No-one has ever seen the Fisheries or Customs near these ships to monitor them.” The local told Pilbara Echo that many local anglers have witnessed the Iron Ore ships in Dampier fishing, while anchored to come into Dampier Port and they are angry nothing has been done about it for such a long time. "Up to 20 ships are anchored for days and many of us have witnessed and some even taken photos and reported them illegally pulling in sailfish and many undersized fish to Fisheries and nothing seems to be been done about it," they said. “We have never seen or heard that Fisheries are out there to monitor their bag limits, undersized fish or protected species. "This is also happening in Point Samson and Port Hedland and probably

Broome too." One photo taken last week, shows a ship pulling in a pelagic fish. It was reported that the ship had seven fishing lines in the water and about 10 or more crew leaning over the rails fishing. "One guy was pulling in about four to six bait fish on one line," the local said. Recfishwest CEO Andrew Rowland said that Recfishwest does not believe that any fishing should be allowed from a commercially registered vessel unless it is a designated fishing boat. “We urge the Government to take a coordinated approach to educating those on foreign vessels about local customs, rules

and law,” he said. “These large pelagic species hold a special place in the hearts of many local recreational fishers who take specific measures to ensure the survival of fish that are released. “We are concerned that the cumulative impacts of fishing activities from these vessels will be detrimental to local fish stocks.” Minister of Fisheries Norman Moore said that people fishing off overseas ships are required to hold a Recreational Fishing from Boat Licence and abide by the Recreational Fishing rules “The Fisheries Department has advised that it recently received a report of persons fishing from

No Recreational Fishing from Boat Licence equals a $100 infringement notice or penalty of up to $2000, if prosecuted before the courts. Bag or size limit offences equal up to $400 infringement notices or penalties of up to $5000, plus an additional mandatory penalty of 10 times the prescribed value of the fish subject to the offence, if prosecuted before the courts. Anyone that witnesses any overseas ships fishing off the WA coast, needs to report it by calling Fish Watch on 1800 815 507. "The more reported fishing from overseas ships will put them (Fisheries and Customs) under more pressure to protect our fish," the local said.

The classic dinner party jaw-dropper, when visiting distant friends, is good old north west surreal and Willy Wonka wacko housing prices. So, whether you’re FIFO or resident local, new to town or an old timer, one thing’s for sure, a bit of tactical planning’s a wise idea.

HYPNOTHERAPIST WILLIAM JOHN FOX

The man with the plan

Or maybe buy me a shack and never ever ever go back, even if it’s green, I know, sounds obscene, to go the pricey fibro track. Wait, no, I’ll stay with a mate; that’s the plan and the plan sounds great. Except I snore a bit. And he likes to knit. It’s a combo I wouldn’t call fate.

But, Kaching! I know a bloke named Fred selling his fancy million dollar tin shed. The thing for which Iust, so grab my tuba and busk and save at least the deposit for…my bed.

But a tent, that’s not for me, pitched on the sand down by the sea. I hear the croc patrol might eat my tuba whole and then, mid snore, I’d have to flee. So, a treehouse, that’s the one, above tsnuamis, protected from the sun, just like a worker bird, fly in fly out, my word, all light and airy, sounds like fun.

Stuff that, think I’ll live with mum and be her much missed prodigal son. Because she used her clout, threatened to chuck me out. “You and that tuba, boy, we’re done!” I think I’ll live in a tent, my tuba by my side, no rent. We’ll make a life together in this freaky fine weather and in a cyclone, expect a dent.

So I yell, “Hey mum, I’ve made my plan!” (She’ll bring me food ‘cause I’m her favourite fan) “I’m moving all of my room into our treehouse, zoom!” I might be eight, but this is REAL estate man.

POLICEWATCH By Senior Constable Newby General Information: Members of the public seem to be confused about when they can report loud parties or noisy neighbours to the police. The noise must be deemed unreasonable before police will attend. We will determine if a noise is unreasonable by using one of the following three methods. Firstly we will park outside the residence and listen from our vehicle, or we will park 100 meters away or we will stand on the fence line of the property where the

noise is being emitted. Common sense prevails; if the noise is deemed unreasonable for the time of day or night then we will attend and tell the owner to stop whatever the noise is. If you believe the noise is unreasonable then please call the Police and if we agree we will enter the premises where the noise is coming from and stop the noise. I If we attend and we do not believe the noise is unreasonable then we will let the caller know. If we have asked the occupant to cease the noise and it continues then we

HUNT WAY CAR PARK WORKS UNDERWAY Works to redevelop Hunt Way car park in Bulgarra commenced this week, completing the multi-million dollar transformation of the Bulgarra Sporting Precinct. The redevelopment will improve traffic management at the busy car park with the introduction of a one-way system. Diagonal parking bays will be marked to assist with the new system. This will make parking simple and hassle-free when using the correct entrance. Solar lighting will also be installed as part of the project to illuminate the car park in front of the under-construction Frank Butler Community Centre. Access to the Hunt Way car park is currently unavailable. Users of Bulgarra Oval are asked to use the lower car park at the western end of Hunt Way or the Searipple Road car park during this time. Work is scheduled for completion on Monday 14th May. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

If you are the driver of the vehicle you are also held responsible for your passengers, they must wear their seatbelts or else you could be issued a larger fine. Overcoming crowding in Roebourne Prison Roebourne Regional Prison, which was originally built in the 1960’s, is reaching breaking point because of overcrowding. The WA Prison Officers’ Union (WAPOU) has called on the Barnett Government to act immediately to address the chronic overcrowding. WAPOU Secretary John Welch said new facilities were urgently needed. “While the Government’s recent announcement to open a new minimum-security facility in Roebourne in welcomed, it’s about time the government acted to update

the archaic main facility because frankly it’s well past its use by date. “Roebourne Prison currently holds over 162 inmates in a prison designed for 116 – that is more than 46 prisoners over the design capacity or almost 40 per cent more than the prison is designed for. “WA’s prison system is bursting at the seams with 13 out of 14 WA prisons overcrowded and Roebourne Regional Prison is no different. “A report released late last year by Western Australia’s Inspector of Custodial Services highlights the

knock on effects overcrowding has on our prisons causing tension amongst prisoners which leads to more assaults on fellow prisoners and can lead to assaults on staff. “If the State Government wants to be tough on law and order it must match its talk with increased investment in prisons and delivery of appropriate new facilities. “Every day prison officers deal with the effects of serious overcrowding. The Barnett Government must act now to stop putting Roebourne Prison staff further at risk,” said Mr Welch.

Underground power contractor pulls out The contractor appointed to carry out the works on the Pilbara Underground Power Project has pulled out. However, Horizon Power says it is working to minimise disruptions to the project, which is moving powerlines underground in Karratha, South Hedland, Onslow and Roebourne. Recently, Horizon Power was advised by the contractor appointed to carry out work in Karratha, that they were ‘demobilising’ from the project. Horizon Power’s management team in Karratha, led by Regional Manager Nick Lockwood, has formed a team of specialists and engaged the services of experienced Western Power personnel and other contractors to work collaboratively to minimise the disruption to customers. “Horizon Power has inspected all open work sites and will recommence the project in Millars Well next week,” he said. “Discussions with a second contractor to recommence work in Bulgarra are ongoing. “Horizon Power is very excited about this Project and what it means for the cyclone-prone town of Karratha; that is, the delivery

of safer and more reliable power supplies. “We apologise to customers for any inconvenience this change of contractor may cause but we assure customers that we remain committed to delivering underground power to the Pilbara.” Horizon Power advises there are no disruptions to works already commenced in South Hedland. Horizon Power is in partnership with the Government of Western Australia (through the Royalties for Regions Pilbara Cities Program) and Local Government Authorities. The partners are committed to delivering underground power to improve safety and reliability of power supplies to thousands of customers in cyclone prone areas in the Pilbara. The Project is a significant infrastructure project that will take several years to complete and as with any project this size, some challenges are to be expected. Horizon Power will provide regular updates on the Project in local media and on our website at www.horizonpower.com.au. Customers with any enquiries are encouraged to call the local Karratha Horizon Power office on 9159 7253.

• Carol Hood, manager Cheyne Reely and Gemma Bickler supporting breast cancer awareness last year Karratha bakers will join forces with their community to show support for local women and families affected by breast cancer, during the Pink Bun fundraising campaign this May. This year, Bakers Delight bakeries across Australia will aim to raise a record breaking $1.2million, to help BCNA’s work in informing, supporting, representing and linking together women living with breast cancer. From May 3 to 23, local bakers will join 615 Bakers Delight bakeries in turning pink and donating 100 per cent of the sale of their Pink Finger Buns, to Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA). Sporting legend and breast cancer survivor, Raelene Boyle, is throwing her support behind the Pink Bun fundraising campaign. “The monies raised through this year’s Pink Bun Campaign will support BCNA’s information resources, including the My Journey Kit, a free resource provided to women newly diagnosed with breast cancer,” she said. Raelene said this year’s Pink Bun campaign is particularly exciting, as Bakers Delight customers will also be funding the development of a new booklet, educating women with breast cancer about the importance of keeping active. “Exercise has made such an amazing difference to me in managing many of the emotional and physical side effects that came with a diagnosis of breast cancer,” said Raelene.

“BCNA hears from the women within our network, that keeping active after breast cancer can be very daunting. “The support of Bakers Delight means BCNA is able to develop this new booklet so more women can improve their wellbeing through exercise, after a breast cancer diagnosis.” Maxine Morand, BCNA CEO and breast cancer survivor, said that with more than 14,000 Australian women expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer this year alone, the support provided through the Bakers Delight Pink Bun campaign, is as important as ever. “We greatly appreciate the enthusiasm and support that Bakers Delight bakeries across Australia provide BCNA,” she said. “Seeing the lengths that bakeries go to in support of women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, is truly inspirational.” Local Bakers Delight bakeries at Karratha hope to make this the most successful Pink Bun campaign ever. As well as selling pink buns, the staff and the bakery will be dressed in pink with collection tins available on the counter for oneoff donations. Customers are also encouraged to leave a personal message on a Pink Lady silhouette, for a gold coin donation. BCNA urges the public to get behind their favourite ‘best dressed bakery’ and vote for them on Facebook: www. facebook.com/ bakersdelight

Pilbara towns to switch to digital TV early The Digital Switchover Taskforce today announced the West Australian towns of Dampier, Derby, Exmouth, Newman and Pannawonica will switch to digital-only free-to-air TV earlier than the rest of the region.

This is known as an early switchover and occurs when broadcasters switch off analog TV on the same day digital TV is switched on. This happens because the transmitters can’t provide analog and digital TV services at the same time. The switchover dates are as follows: • Dampier –July 19 • Newman –July 20 • Pannawonica - June 28 The early switchover means for the first time these communities will have access to all 16 digital

free-to-air digital channels from the ABC, SBS and commercial broadcasters. To access new digital TV services, residents will need to make sure their televisions can receive the digital signal by: connecting a set-top box or digital TV recorder to their existing analog TV, or upgrading to a digital TV (a TV with a built-in digital tuner). Some buildings may also need to upgrade their antenna systems and cables to receive digital TV. People who rent their homes or live in buildings with shared antenna systems, should check with their landlords or body corporate to ensure their building is ready for digital TV. Residents who can watch ABC2 or SBS TWO are already watching digital TV and may not

need to do anything. To assist local residents with the switch to digital, staff from the Digital Switchover Taskforce will be hosting local information days throughout the region. Residents can drop in to find out what to expect on the day of the switchover and receive tips and advice about how to best tune into the new digital TV services. Centrelink will write to eligible people and invite them to opt-in for assistance by calling Centrelink on 1800 55 64 43. To find out more about the switch to digital, residents can enter their full address into the mySwitch tool on the Digital Ready website www.digitalready. gov.au or call the Digital Ready Information Line on 1800 20 10 13.

For over two decades, Willie Creek Pearls have been captivating people with the wonderful and mysterious world of pearls. Now, the Broome owned business has expanded to Karratha, opening to locals at the Karratha International Hotel on Thursday, April 26 and to loyal costumers at The Icon on Friday, April 27. Willie Creek Pearls group marketing manager, Anne Pesic, said the events were an open shopping night for the community, showcasing their 2012 collection. “Last year we decided to expand to Karratha,” she said. “We have been thinking what other regions in Australia to expand to, so we have decided that we are going to have a permanent cabinet at The Icon in town. “We have so many costumers both here and in Port Hedland. “So for our next expansion, we would love to move into Port Hedland.” Ms Pesic said the reason behind expanding to Karratha is for the costumers. “Now they don’t have to travel so far, to Broome or Perth to come and buy our jewellery,” she said. Willie Creak Pearls approached Sean

Throssel at The Icon last year, to partner with them in selling the product. “He is a fantastic businessperson and we like to partner with like-minded companies and also the fact that he is Western Australian,” Ms Pesic said. “With such a beautiful product like ours, costumers really want to touch and feel it before they buy it, so that is really the main reason we did decide to partner with Sean. “People can now have a cocktail and try something on,” Ms Pesic laughed. “We’ve had so many costumers’ call up and say ‘thank God that you have a permanent cabinet here in Karratha’.” On both nights, Pilbara models were showcasing some of the products including 2010 Pilbara Girl judges choice, Finola Woodley and 2011 Pilbara Girl second runner-up, La-Toya Phillips. Willie Creek Pearls are also sponsoring with Goolarri Media, the Kimberley and Pilbara Girl. For more information, head in to see Sean Throssell at The Icon, 1 Sharpe Avenue, Karratha. Introducing rubbish-recycling program to schools Rio Tinto and ToxFree have joined forces to educate local school children about the importance of recycling through the Recycling Warriors program. The Recycling Warriors initiative allows local schools to have their own recycling depot on school grounds and ensures all students are given an opportunity to learn about the value of recycling. Through an educational and interactive presentation, students are encouraged to deposit their rubbish in the appropriately labelled bins – paper/cardboard, aluminium, glass and food scraps. Bins for paper and cardboard will also be located in all classrooms. Tox Free services school depots weekly and provides statistics on the amount and type of rubbish collected. Rio Tinto community advisor Toni Salmon said Dampier Primary School was already part of the program and she looked forward to rolling it out to the participating schools in Karratha, starting with

Pegs Creek Primary School earlier this week. “Since September 2011, Dampier Primary School students converted 90 per cent of their total waste to be recycled, which equates to nearly one tonne of paper, cardboard and plastic,” Ms Salmon said. “It’s great to see such fantastic results and commitment from the school and students towards recycling.” In conjunction with the Recycling Warriors program, Rio Tinto and ToxFree continue to work together to maintain the Dampier Community Recycling Station. ToxFree customer and community relationships manager Andy Bradshaw said the commitment to sustainability would only have a positive impact on the community. “Rio Tinto and ToxFree will work collaboratively to ensure long-term recycling services are delivered to the community and young people in the area are educated on the importance of recycling,” Mr Bradshaw said.

Author David Morgan visited the Karratha Visitor Centre on Friday, April 28, to promote his new book Mangadoo. The story of Mangadoo introduces readers to George Nolan, transported as a convict to Western Australia at a young age and serving out his sentence by working on a property near Pinjarra. “Inside of him grows a determination to one-day find the truth behind his unjust conviction of stealing a horse and transporting it from England to Australia,” Mr Morgan said. “Once freed, George sets off on an adventure that takes him to the Roebourne area. “The whirlwind story creates a captivating panorama that takes readers from India, to England and on to the North West of Western Australia. “The find out the rest, I guess you will have to read it to find out.” The inspiration for Mangadoo came from David’s involvement with the Nor West Jockey Club, Roebourne, where he was a committee member. “When it all got blown away in 1989 by a cyclone, so I was involved in restructuring and rebuilding the club,” he said. “I looked at promoting the club by a heritage angle and from there, I read every book, and I just saw this story that started to evolve around

what they call the Nor West Bred where the lives of the pioneers evolved around horses, as that was all they had in those days. “They developed a type of horse called the Nor West Bred which was intelligent, strong and very nimble around spinifex grass and it was ideal for the British army in South Africa. “And they actually raced these horses in Roebourne as well.” The closure of the plot of how he was going to transport the horse from England was a struggle for Mr Morgan until he read a horse magazine on a plane trip to Adelaide. “I was reading a feature article in a racing magazine about ‘Shergar’, the champion Irish horse that won the Epsom Derby, later stolen and just disappeared,” he said. “It said in the article, it said that Shergar had reports of being seen running around outback Queensland. “And I thought, so the horse had come from England to Australia, stolen and it fits the story, so that was it, Mangadoo was born.” Mr Morgan mentioned his family have been great supporters of his book, which took him 17 years to write. “A lot of the book was written at Coral Bay during family holidays,” he laughed. For more information on Mangdoo, visit www.mangdoo.com.au.

Nickol Bay Hospital has spent the last 18 months working on an international initiative promoting breast-feeding. Now, after the long hours and effort put in by many people of the community, accreditors from the Australian committee of the World Health Organisation have visited the hospital, to see if it has what it takes to promote the Baby Friendly Health Initiative (BFHI). BFHI coordinator, Kath Badzinska, said that it is an accreditation process, so it is quite involved and there were many people who helped with this journey. “We had the accreditors in last week, where the women were interviewed in the community about their experiences at Nickol Bay Hospital,” she said. “They were very kind and positive in the things that they said about us which we are really grateful for, because we can put as many posters up as we like but it’s about what the women think of us that counts. “And also the proof that we can present to them in our data of how many women initiate breast-feeding with us, how many women leave us breastfeeding and the support that the women believe they receive from the hospital.” Ms Badzinska said it is not about those women who don’t want to breastfeed, it is about the women that do want to breastfeed but are having difficulties in some way or another. “Influences of a successful breastfeeding mother are huge, breastfeeding affect the child, the mother and the community,” she said.

10 KILOS 10 WEEKS?

During the process, Nickol Bay Hospital has had people from the community helping them, the Australian Breastfeeding Association and the employees in the hospital. “Everyone in the hospital had to learn about the initiative,” Ms Badzinska said. “From the cleaners, storemen, nurses, doctors, everyone. “It was huge, but everyone pulled together and we believe we have done really well.” “The accreditors were very positive about us, they said that we were a lovely team that work in a wonderful unit and that the mothers really loved us, which really impressed them. “And although it is not formalised yet, all of the hard yards are done and now the accreditors take back all of their information that they gathered to the Australia committee and then they approve us or they don’t.” Australian Breastfeeding Narelle Dale said that Kath Badzinska, as the coordinator of the committee, has been there from day one. “She has put in countless amounts of her own hours and time to get this up and running,” she said. “So, she has been a great leader and without her leadership, we probably wouldn’t have come this far, so she has ben very, very inspirational.” Ms Badzinska said that a baby friendly hospital has a lot of kudos attached to it. “Mothers who are researching where to have their babies, one thing that they look for are baby friendly hospitals, well there is only three in WA,” she said. “We are hoping to be the fourth and also the first rural Western Australian hospital to achieve the accreditation.” The current three baby friendly hospitals in WA include King Edward, Joondalup and Kalgoorlie. The Baby Friendly Health Initiative is funded by the Royalties for Regions.

TOWER HEIST TOWER Heist is a 2011 crime comedy film directed by Brett Ratner and written by Ted Griffin and Jeff Nathanson, based on a story by Bill Collage, Adam Cooper, and Griffin. When the staff of New York City’s most expensive and luxurious condominium discovers that the billionaire investment advisor living in the penthouse has plundered their retirement fund, they take matters into their own hands in a “downright fun, comic caper” (Mike Scott, Times Picayune). Convinced that light-fingered Wall Street Titan Arthur Shaw (Alan Alda) has stashed his ill-gotten millions in his apartment, building manager Josh Kovacs (Ben Stiller) rallies his troops and enlists the help of small-time thief Slide (Eddie Murphy) to make sure they get back what’s rightfully theirs. REAF EVENT RECEIVES FUNDING

AN INTIMATE JOURNEY THROUGH MUSIC AND STORY

THE North West has received funding for the Red Earth Arts Festival through Eventscorp’s 2012-13 Regional Events Scheme, which is jointly funded by Royalties for Regions. Member for North West, Vincent Catania MLA said regional events were important as they delivered many social, cultural and economic benefits to the community, while showcasing the region to visitors. “The Regional Events Scheme supports a range of smaller or developing sporting, arts, cultural and culinary events, that encourage visitation, add vibrancy and provide valuable media exposure for the region,” Mr Catania said. Mr Catania thanked Tourism Minister, Dr Kim Hames and Minister for Regional Development Brendon Grylls, for supporting the development of regional events across Western Australia. “Thanks to the 2012-13 round of the Regional Events Scheme, 45 events across Western Australia will receive funding of between $5,000 and $50,000,” Mr Catania said. The Red Earth Arts Festival was first launched in 2010 and aims to give local artists the opportunity to showcase their talents in the form of workshops, dance, theatre and musical performances.

Northern Territory singer songwriter Shellie Morris is working with Artback NT to deliver her national tour of Shellie’s Story and will be at the Walkington Amphitheatre on May 17. Shellie’s Story is an intimate performance providing audiences with an insight into Shellie’s journey so far. And what a journey! Exploring identity and family through song and with large doses of Shellie’s playful attitude, Shellie’s Story promises to be a memorable tour that will incorporate workshops in song writing and master classes in many of her locations around Australia. From Multicultural Festivals such as Emerge in Shepparton, Victoria to a community performance at the Pinjarra Massacre site in Western Australia and

Band, Shellie is a well-travelled and highly experienced performer. This experience and her travels inform much of Shellie’s Story. Her album Waiting Road was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2007 Deadly Awards.

She has a Wardaman (Katherinearea) grandfather remembered for his skills with guitar and voice, and a Yanyuwa (Borroloola-area) grandmother who was taken from her family at eight years and brought up in Darwin’s Kahlin compound.

She has been featured nationally on ABC TV’s Message Stick program and in the Black Arm Band documentary Murandak.

Shellie has played with an amazing array of musicians including Yothu Yindi, Neil Murray, Ross Wilson, Gurrumul Yunupingu, Archie Roach, Sinéad O’Connor, John Cale, Meshell Ndegeocello, Rickie Lee Jones and Brazilian singer Gilberto Gil.

Shellie’s Story will be at the Walkington Amphitheatre on Thursday, May 17 at 7.30pm.

THINKING CAPS ON TO RAISE FUNDS The Karratha United Community put the fun into fundraising for charity last Saturday night, with a Trivia Night at the All Seasons Sports Bar. About 170 people put their thinking caps on to help raise money for a local not-for-profit organisation, Pilbara and Kimberley Care.

Pilbara and Kimberley Care provide a variety of services to the community including domestic assistance, social support, home nursing, transportation and respite care.

Professor Paul Skerritt from the Southern Cross Care Board who looks after the Pilbara and Kimberley Care said the Trivia Night was a wonderful idea.

“Just because something is not-for-profit, doesn’t mean it can’t make a loss,” he said. “It does require money to run the service and it is really grateful that the United Community have decided to support the Pilbara and Kimberley Care as it is a worthy cause.”

❙ The Crawford Realty team.

Karratha United Community branch manager, Amanda Letcher, said that by raising funds for PKC, they are able to improve their service that they provide to the community. The United Community were hoping to raise between $10,000 - $15,000. When Pilbara Echo went to print, United Community had raised $13,900.

meaning, but I thought I’d give it a go,” he said.

UNDER THE STARS IN A VERY CASUAL ATMOSPHERE, LOCAL COUNTRY MUSICIAN COREY COLUM PERFORMED HIS DEBUT ALBUM AT THE KARRATHA VISITOR CENTRE, LAST SUNDAY NIGHT.

“I decided to take the experts advice so the song ‘Fire in the Hole’ is a lot more rockier.

“This album is a lot more rockier than what I have previously played,” Colum said. “I spent lots of time in the studio recording this album and it was quite an experience. “It was a little daunting and nerve racking, but I was able to spend time with experts, who told me I should play some younger stuff as there isn’t a lot of a young following from country music.”

“So let’s see what happens.” Karratha Visitor Centre manager, Bazz Harris, said the event was the first trial for many more performances to be held at the centre. “It has been a terrific response, and we had to stop taking RSVPs at 3pm as we wanted a very casual atmosphere,” he said. “This has given us an idea of what we can do. “There has been free snags on the barbie and everyone is glowing and raving about it.

He said that it is not ‘Yankee pop music’; he just rocked it up a bit.

“It is very humbling and I’m glad to have something here like this.

“Most of the country music following is older and wiser people, I myself love slow songs with

PILBARA TAFE STUDENT SHOWS SOME CHEEK IN AUSTEN CLASSIC Former Karratha TAFE student Cally Zanik is taking to the stage this May in a timeless love story from one of the most widely read writers of all time.

Director Vanessa Jensen has adapted the script for stage herself, based on the original 1815 novel.

Directed by Vanessa Jensen at Melville Theatre, Jane Austen’s Emma follows a beautiful and clever young woman who prides herself on her matchmaking ability – but while she’s preoccupied with romance, she’s clueless to her own feelings of love.

“I directed Pride and Prejudice at Melville Theatre and wanted to direct Emma next – but I struggled to find a version of Emma I liked.

When Emma takes on a young friend as her latest project, her wellintentioned efforts misfire, leading to a whirlwind of complications. Zanik plays Mary, a cheeky, outspoken housemaid. “She has a lack of regard for the rank and dignity of her employers,” she said. “Jane Austen novels are a favourite of mine so I jumped at the opportunity to be involved in Emma.” Involved in theatre for more than 10 years, Zanik has performed in numerous productions with Phoenix and Kwinana Theatres, Arena Arts and Entertainments and the Karratha Youth Group. She said she always found playing characters with an accent a little difficult. “But the romantic and fun nature of Emma has really helped with this,” Zanik said.

“I am a Jane Austen fan, and have been for years,” she said.

“They were all modernised and changed and the lyrical beauty of Austen’s words were often lost with the propriety and manners hidden. “I asked myself what I was looking for and the answer was ‘the novel on the stage’, so I set out to dramatise it. “Changes had to be made to accommodate theatrical conventions and to keep the show to a reasonable length but the tone, style and many of the words are straight from the pages of the novel.” Emma plays at 8pm, May 4, 5, 10 - 12 and 17 - 19 with a 2pm matinee May 13. Tickets are $18, $14 concession – book on 9330 4565 or email melville. theatre.company@gmail.com. Emma is also an officially registered fundraising supporter for the National Breast Cancer Foundation with Melville Theatre donating $2 from every ticket sold, as well as raffle proceeds and any donations collected.

HERE’S TO SISTER LILLY Local, Lilly Edwards, celebrated her 21st birthday last Saturday night with friends, family and a yardie! Held at her Aunty Coral’s house, everyone danced the night away with DJ Hanky at the decks. “The night was an all round awesome night,” Lilly said. “The speeches were filled with lot’s of laughs, tears and cheers. “They were done by Mum, Nana, both my brothers, my cousin Shamara and two of my best friends Jade and Shinnai. “Shinnai and Jade had not prepared a speech and only had to say “I love Lilly Edwards… that is all,” which made me laugh.” Like any 21st birthday, embarrassing stories were told;

including Shamara telling everyone about how close the cousins were growing up and were basically joined at the hip. “She talked bout how I would get her grounded most weekends, but would still find a way to sneak out and figure out an excuse to tell my dad when returning the next morning,” Lilly said. “The yard glass I was dreading the whole night, but to my surprise I finished it myself! “I had finished my yard glass only because I had the encouragement of my oldest brother in my ear to not give up and to finish it off! “Thanks to all my beautiful friends and family who attended.” Photos courtesy of CB Snapz Photography

Tennis is back up and running after having to postpone the season, due to lack of courts.

Dale said that the previous surface was torn and had holes in it; it was tearing at the seams, the bounce wasn’t true and the lines stood out.

And to welcome the members, old and new, the Karratha Tennis Club will be holding an open night at the Bulgarra Tennis Courts on Monday, May 7. Over the past two months, the Shire of Roebourne has been completely upgrading four of the six tennis courts. “The Shire has just resurfaced, four of our six courts and upgraded the lighting on those four courts, so the season hasn’t really been able to get going until now,” president Stuart Dale said. “So we will be starting our season next Monday, where any member of the public is

“So we hadn’t spent any money on the courts for about five or six years because we thought we were shifting, so it would be a waste of money. “But we found out there was no room at the leisure centre for the tennis courts, so we are staying here, so they had to spend a bit of money.” • Peter Thomas

“So the Shire ripped it up, the base was fixed to some degree, the new surface was laid and they have also done some fence work and various other bits and pieces around the place,” he said.

The tennis courts obviously needed a major upgrade, since not spending money on the courts or facilities for five-six years.

Anglers to have their say on fishing rules The proposal to change WA’s recreational fishing rules, were discussed with local anglers, when the recfishwest CEO visited Dampier recently. The draft strategy, released by the Department of Fisheries earlier this year, contains sweeping reforms that will affect

all recreational fishermen. Recfishwest urged each recreational fisherman who attended the discussion, to submit feedback on a draft strategy, developed by the Department, which contains significant changes to bag and possession limits across the State.

Recfishwest acting chief executive officer, Andrew Rowland, said the review was aimed at standardising and simplifying the rules from a statewide perspective.

Standardising the current highly complicated daily bag limits is another key objective of the draft strategy.

“As with all strategies, there will be support for some of the propositions and opposition to others,” Dr Rowland said.

The Department also proposes to standardise the bag limit of pelagic

This is the first time the Department of Fisheries has asked the peak body to conduct the community consultation for a major strategy. “It is crucial recreational fishers consider the proposed changes and submit their comments on the proposal,” he said. “The basis of support or opposition for the proposals is important in ensuring the Department implements the most soundly based strategy.” Dr Rowland stressed that the review is merely a set of proposals and Recfishwest will coordinate the community’s views to be presented to the State Government. “This review provides fishers with a great opportunity to provide input into the management of recreational fishing over the next five years,” he said.

The highly renowned Recfishwest Community Fishing Clinic Program will return to Karratha, to the delight of school children. Recfishwest has been facilitating the Community Fishing Clinic Program for more than a decade and is pleased to announce that Woodside and Healthway will support the initiative once again this year. Clinics will begin in Karratha on May 8 and there will be six sessions held at a number of schools until May 19. The fishing clinics encourage school children to become involved in a fun activity that helps to provide positive life skills, such as creative decision making, problem solving, goal setting and patience. This year’s Northern Community Fishing Clinic Program will begin in Carnarvon and visit towns right through to Derby; as well as dropping

by the remote communities of Middle Lagoon, Lombadina and One Arm Point. Recfishwest chief executive officer Andrew Rowland said the fishing clinics in the North West were made even better by the incredible fishing this spectacular part of Western Australia offered. “The Recfishwest fishing clinics are extremely popular in this region. Everyone gets something positive out of learning how to appreciate our aquatic resources and becoming a better fisher,” Dr Rowland said. The clinics educate the children about sustainable fishing practices including casting techniques, selection of bait and general rigging, recognition of fish species, catch and release and aquatic conservation. The students are also taught about personal safety, caring

for their catch and current rules and regulations. Dr Rowland said the fishing clinics encouraged young people to get out and be active, by engaging in an enjoyable activity. “The fantastic thing about fishing is that it is an activity for everyone.” Woodside has recognised the important role it plays in North West communities and will be fostering the sustainable fishing message by partnering with Recfishwest. “We are very supportive of programs that improve understanding and sustainability of the marine environment – particularly through hands on, grassroots education programs such as Recfishwest’s North West Tour,” said Jo Ferrie, Woodside manager community relations.

The fast and the furious Results

By Barry Branch

50cc Jap

Racing again was fast and furious with some great performances put in from all classes. Starting with the 50cc class Mitchell Bond was on the money until his engine blew and was unable to fight for first with Sammy Armstrong. Grant Eastwell dominated the 85cc class with some impressive win margins. Local and track maintainer Chris Anastazjew (Xman) took out the Clubman class. Greg Chistie was put under some pressure in the vets class with new rider Robert Dick showing him his front wheel on numerous occasions. Lochie Smith, Tyson Lind and Dave Alexander put in some awesome riding throughout the day in the open and pro lite classes, but unfortunately Smith took a spectacular crash in the feature race, which resulted in a DNF. To the delight of all spectators he got up and walked away uninjured, other than some scratches. Without safety gear, which was worn by Smith, this could have been far worse and ended any podium finishes for his racing year.

Free Weekly 5 - 6 May 2012

Collins sets standard on rocky climb By race director Mark Smith Darryl Collins will admit 2011 was patchy, but after winning race one of the Burrup Mountain Bike Club 2012 Race Series, he has set a high standard and earned new respect from the other elite riders. After being neck and neck all race, Collins broke away and won by 32 seconds in 57:31 when Tristan Wood-Hill slipped a gear on the last rocky fire-trail climb of the course. “Tristan slipped and I got a break”, recalls Collins. New club life member, Roman Raudonikis, showed his tank was full with a strong third place. Forty-one riders tackled the new five kilometre lap course the terrain testing both rider and bike with several punctures.

Expert category also provided close racing, with a focused Dave Dann winning ahead of Jason Giekie and Jim McLeod. Aaron Day won sport category, in front of junior graduate Toby Muller and Steve Marrows. A bike fit Sally Smith led from the start, to win ahead of new rider Tania Neeson and another progressing junior, Mikayla Smith. Neeson showed a smooth transition from a successful Triathlon season. Junior Brent Hamilton got a taste of racing as he finished ahead of cheeky BMXers Dylan Muller and Jarrod Pickford. Next race is on May 12 at the Baynton Power Poles Course. Visit www.home.spin.net.au/burrupmb for full details.
