Karratha leisure complex coming to life The $63.7million Karratha Leisure Complex has reached an important milestone with the selection of five Australian artists to create public art installations at the facility. Jason Hirst and Tim Macfarlane Reid have been selected as the lead artists for the commission, with Leanne Bray, Steve Monk and Karratha artist, Catherine Cresswell also contributing works. Minister for I n d i g e n o u s Employment and Economic Development, Community Services and the Status of Women, Julie Collins, inspected the construction site today during her threeday visit to the Pilbara.

“With construction progressing we can now see the footprint of the complex and picture how it will look once completed,” Ms Collins said. “When tilt panels start to go up next month, the walls will take shape and create the space in which this state-of-the-art facility will exist. “Hosting over 12 sport, cafe and crèche facilities, meeting and club rooms, the Karratha Leisure Complex will deliver vital community infrastructure for this growing resource region. “As an emergency evacuation and welfare centre, it will also be an important point of safety and security

during severe weather events,’ Ms Collins said. Regional Australia and Arts Minister, Simon Crean said the combination of artworks would celebrate the identity and culture of the Pilbara region. “These works will add to the experience of over 300,000 visitors expected to use the complex each year,” Mr Crean said. “The application pool of 29 artists shows the high level of interest among the artistic community to contribute to this major project as it comes to life in the Pilbara. “The Karratha Leisure Complex will not only create new social and sporting

opportunities in the Pilbara, it will also raise the profile of visual arts in regional Australia. “The Australian Government has invested $15 million in the Karratha Leisure Centre under the first round of the almost $1 billion Regional Development Australia Fund (RDAF). “This first round is investing $150 million in 35 projects and because we have prioritised projects that leverage funding from other partners, we have generated an overall investment of almost $418 million in regions around Australia,” he said. The Regional Development Australia Fund is supporting

• Minister for Indigenous Employment & Economic Development Julie Collins, Shire of Roebourne president Fiona White-Hartig & Project Manager Geoff Shoemark investment-ready projects that distribute the proceeds of the resources boom to the regions of Australia. Projects are currently being considered for funding under the $200 million second round.

Karratha Library set to open The Karratha Library will be opening at the Pam Buchanan Family Centre on May 30. All local Councillors, State Library WA representatives, including the Chief Executive Officer and State Library Board members, Members of Parliament, Shire of Roebourne representatives, members of the media, and tenants of the Pam Buchanan Centre have been invited to the small, invite-only event. Shire of Roebourne president

Fiona White-Hartig said that the Shire recognises that a library is an important hub for the local community, full of great resources. “It provides a welcoming place for people to gather and relax and facilitates the opportunity for social and educational activity,” she said. “From the latest books and magazines, to computer access and Internet, the Karratha Library opens up a world of information, resources and

entertainment for the local community.” It was back at the December 2011 Ordinary Council Meeting, when an internal budget reallocation was endorsed, to fund the library’s operations. “It is envisaged that this Library will be in place for approximately 12 months,” Cr White-Hartig said. I bumped into a friend doing the grocery shopping late Mother’s Day. Like me, she’s not keen on shopping. So it’s saying something that she was so full up on love from her precious little ones that, rather than explode, she’d hit the supermarket. For fun. It is a true blessing to have the gift of one’s own family. Sometimes, interestingly enough, the gift of an hour staring vacantly at tin cans can elicit a similar euphoria.

A mother of a day I told them “Yes” to breakfast. My husband wasn’t home. I asked if they’d need help. They’d do it all alone.

Please post all applications to: The UWA IELTS Test Centre, M438 35 Stirling Highway, Nedlands WA 6009. Places are limited. The Deadline for Applications is 26th June 2012 unless full before.

They knew I needed toast. Two pieces. Marg’ and honey. They knew that if I didn’t have that, things might get unfunny. They’ve noticed me make tea,

a ritual often seen. I tell them every morning, “I just need my caffeine.” They asked if they might bake. Eyes closed I mumbled, “Um…” The older asked again. The young moaned, all glum. They asked again politely. With voices sweet as pie. I scrunched my nose and yawned, “For sure and donkeys fly.” “Are donkeys just like unicorns?” The younger said, distracted. I thought, just let me go to sleep. You kids are too proactive. And suddenly the silence. The room quick smart abandoned. And suddenly the fighting in the kitchen. Rather random. I heard the yells, the bargaining, then clinking, chinking, sway. I thought of hubby sleeping. Did I mention he’s away?

I waited all pretendy like and hoped no one was burnt with boiling water, charcoal toast (through everything they’d learnt). And suddenly, surprise, surprise, where did I see that coming? It’s brekky on a tray, two cherubs, “Happy birthday” humming.

Although, ‘twas not my birthday. But what day? Check my phone. Oh Sunday, ah yes, Mother’s Day, Two kids. And Mum. Don’t groan… “Ta dah!” they wibble wobbled in, the tray a heavy beast and on it all ingredients, this (very very) early morning feast. “We love you mum!” the pair chimed in. Their cooking skills at stake: Coke can, and mushy cereal, and a…picture of a cake.

POLICEWATCH

By Senior Constable Newby Community Information:

Karratha Police want to remind members of the public to please drive carefully on gravel roads. There have been two serious crashes of late where both drivers have lost control of their vehicles. In both crashes there were serious injuries and four people were flown to Perth via RFDS. Both crashes are still being investigated but in both, control was somehow lost, causing the vehicle to roll. There are lots of gravel roads in the Pilbara and it is a very high chance that many of you have and will drive on gravel roads quite regularly. Police are urging you to please take care. The surface can be uneven and can be extremely dangerous if you are not concentrating on the road. Most importantly, Karratha Police want to make sure that you are all wearing your seatbelts. Some people think that as soon as they go off road it is a reason to take off their seatbelt. This is by far the worst thing to do and could be a deadly move on your behalf. Remember to take care on gravel roads and always wear your seatbelt. Traffic Information: Karratha Traffic would like to remind the public of the importance of wearing bicycle helmets. Helmets are to be worn for your own safety as they can prevent head injuries in a collision. Section 222(1)(a) of the Road Traffic Act states that a Bicycle rider failing to wear a protective helmet securely fastened on their head will receive a $50 fine. As adults we need to lead by example

Our representatives will be attending the Pilbara Pulse Economic Summit and are available for appointments on Tuesday 5 June 2012 and Wednesday 6 June 2012. Tour ticks all boxes for WA businesses A group of WA business leaders were given a snapshot of resources activity in the North West during a weeklong tour of the region organised by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) WA. In all, 25 businessmen and women joined the annual CCIWA Resources Tour that saw them spend a week in the Pilbara visiting some of the nation’s richest resource projects. CCIWA Chief Executive Officer James Pearson said the popular tour has been run for several years and is an opportunity for local WA businesses to see first hand the potential for business growth and investment in the resource sector of the North West. “We bring together local companies that are interested in doing business with the resources industry with companies like Apache, Chevron, BHP, Rio Tinto, FMG, Woodside the companies that want to engage more effectively with local suppliers,” he said. “Some of them [businesses] are already supplying goods and services to companies in the mining and oil and gas industries others are hoping to crack into the market.” Mr Pearson said the feedback from participants of the 2012 tour was optimistic and a clearer understanding of opportunities in the mining, oil and gas industries. “And the other clear messages that are coming through here is that if local companies are competitive and if the big companies with the big developments make an effort to engage local companies then they’re both going to do well out of it,” he said. The group spent a day with Apache Energy, with a helicopter ride over Barrow Island, the Citic Pacific magnetite ore development at Cape Preston and a ground tour of Apache’s Devil Creek Gas

Plant, about 70kms south west of Karratha. “We got the chance at Apache to really understand how the different parts of the energy mix come together to drive specific projects and drive West Australian business,” said Mr Pearson. Apache’s Government and Public Affairs Director David Parker said the CCI trip was a valuable opportunity to connect with existing and potential local suppliers and supporting industry, as well as showcasing Western Australia’s new domestic gas hub at the Apache-operated Devil Creek domestic gas plant located south of Karratha.

“Apache is a committed participant in the local economies and communities in which it operates such as Western Australia,” Mr Parker said. “The CCI North West Resources Tour provides a unique insight into the scale and quality of major energy investment underway in WA today.” Apache Energy’s $850 million Devil Creek onshore processing plant is Western Australia’s third domestic natural gas processing hub and the first new one in more than 15 years. The plant processes gas from the Reindeer Field, which lies approximately 100kms off the North West coast. Devil Creek delivered first gas into the Dampier to Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline late last year and now in full production, supplies up to 220 terajoules per day.

The CARE (Communities Against Rubbishing our Environment) group is at it again. This time they will be cleaning up the parklands, road verges, bicycle paths, creeks and drains of Millars Well on Sunday, May 27. And with each bag of rubbish collected, $6 will go towards SAFE (Saving Animals From Euthanasia), a worthy local organisation who is in desperate need of funds. This will be made possible by the Shire of Roebourne’s ‘Bucks for Bags’ program. A short pre-cleanup briefing will be held at 8am at the Millars Well footy oval car park (dirt car park right next to Balmoral Road).

Apprentices and trainees to support expanding workforce Rio Tinto plans to significantly expand its apprenticeship and trainee programs, to meet the demands of its future business needs.

Rio Tinto decided in October 2011 to take in-house, the responsibility for apprentices and trainees, including the 145 then underway.

This comes on top of a substantial increase over the past year, which has doubled the number of apprenticeships already underway.

Within six months that number had increased to 310.

Greg Lilleyman, President, Pilbara Operations for Rio Tinto’s iron ore business, said the economic environment and industry competition provided the ideal context in which to again increase the intake of new trainees. His comments followed calls from some major construction industry employers and unions for resources companies to make substantial contributions to the building industry trainee fund to compensate for the relative decline in numbers taking up an apprenticeship. Rio Tinto expects to take in at least 120 more apprentices over the next 12 months. They will join the 310 apprentices and 403 trainees already learning new skills while working inside the business. “We are acutely aware of our responsibility to train and develop from within our own ranks and the communities surrounding our operations, and we take this responsibility very seriously,” he said. “The current skills shortage and resulting focus on skills development creates the perfect conditions by which to promote innovative training business cases and to take bold steps in terms of investment.”

“Rio Tinto spends more that $85 million a year on its training programs in Western Australia, with about 700 employees actively involved in conducting training or assessing skills,” he said. “We currently have 6.4% of our total workforce under a trainee or apprenticeship program.” There are now five dedicated regional training facilities: Dampier, Cape Lambert, Paraburdoo, Tom Price and the new “Kuttajin Borne” training facility at Belmont, opened in June 2011 by the Minister for Energy, Training and Workforce Development, the Hon. Peter Collier MLC. The current and proposed increases to the number of apprentice and traineeships available is complemented by a range of innovative strategies, the most recent being the funding earlier this month of 43 mining-related scholarships to the University of Western Australia. A number of Rio Tinto’s recruitment and training programs are focused on improving the range and diversity of the workforce, targeting women and indigenous candidates to further improve Rio Tinto’s above-average industry performance.

Young people to have their say The Shire of Roebourne is looking for young people aged 15-25 years to be a part of the Youth Leadership Network. The Youth Leadership Network is an initiative that will engage young people aged 15 to 25 years in learning, leadership and community engagement. Shire of Roebourne president Fiona White-Hartig, said that the Network is designed to assist in the sustainable development of cross sector partnerships between young people and the community. “It will provide young people in the Shire of Roebourne with the opportunity to raise awareness of youth issues and establish connections with community,” she said. “The Shire of Roebourne recognises that supporting youth development is a priority for the region. “We respect and acknowledge all young people as important members of our community.

“Our Shire is committed to supporting the enhancement and development of effective services, programs and activities that meet the needs of youth and is keen to provide a range of opportunities that encourage all youth to be active and productive members of the community. “The Youth Leadership Network will enhance advocacy to support youth development and address negative youth stereotypes; it will also provide the opportunity for young people to raise awareness of youth issues.” The Youth Leadership Network will be driven by young people and will provide personal and professional development opportunities. The Youth Leadership Network will also be actively involved in planning youth events and activities within the Shire of Roebourne. Volunteers watch over nesting turtles In the Pilbara township of Wickham a small yet dedicated group of volunteers has been keeping a close eye on the annual nesting of marine turtles that occurs on their local beaches. The West Pilbara Turtle Program (WPTP) has been operating for seven years with funding from Rio Tinto and assistance from the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) and local residents who donate their time and effort to the cause. DEC marine conservation officer Marissa Speirs said the community group mainly monitored turtles during the nesting and hatching season, between October and April. “This year we saw turtle nesting activity on two beaches within Rio Tinto’s lease and the Wickham back beaches, with volunteers regularly visiting these beaches to identify the species of turtle coming ashore to nest and determine if they nested successfully,” Ms Speirs said. “This season volunteers recorded a total of 139 successful nests, which were all laid by flatback turtles, while in the past the occasional green or hawksbill turtle has also been recorded.” WPTP coordinator Michelle Ludbrook said she was pleased that locals were becoming

• Volunteers monitoring turtle nesting activity more aware of turtle nesting on Wickham’s beaches. “The word is slowly spreading and people are starting to realise that turtles nest on their back doorstep,” Ms Ludbrook said. “We have a responsibility to ensure that turtles continue to nest here, and monitoring turtle tracks through the WPTP is one way people can help. “Working with local volunteers was a rewarding experience. It was great to see people’s positive reactions to seeing their first turtle or hatchling.” Rio Tinto port manager Cape Lambert operations Michael Bailey said Rio Tinto

was committed to sustainable environmental partnerships that engaged the community and provided positive outcomes for the region. “Our ongoing partnership with DEC on the West Pilbara Turtle Program has been one that locals including Rio Tinto employees really connect with,” Mr Bailey said. “The long-term partnership works to ensure the longevity of turtles on our beaches and ensures we monitor population numbers, nesting habits and hatchling numbers.” DEC and Rio Tinto would like to thank Michelle and the WPTP volunteers for their efforts during the 2011-12 turtle nesting season.

Rangers will fine illegal campers Shire of Roebourne president Fiona WhiteHartig said that the Shire of Roebourne Rangers would not tolerate anyone camping illegally in the Shire. “However, they will tolerate backpackers... enjoying the same privileges we ‘locals’ enjoy,” Cr White-Hartig said. “It’s important to remember that backpackers have just the same rights as residents, when it comes to using public facilities. “I will use Cattrall Park as an example because there have been a number of travellers parking their vehicles in the car park on Balmoral Road in recent times. “Our Rangers can and will issue warnings and infringements where necessary but only when backpackers are found to be camping illegally. “Backpackers are more than welcome to park in the car park during the day, but they should not be hanging out their clothes to dry for all to see,” she said. “Rangers will not intervene when backpackers are cooking meals, unless they are intending to camp the night illegally.” The Rangers have

Although no backpackers have been caught camping illegally at Cattrall Park in recent months, Rangers have issued a number of warnings and infringements throughout the Shire. “For those of you who’ve been wondering what will happen at the overflow camping area this tourist season, new

rules are now in place,” Cr White-Hartig said. “Campers must check for alternative accommodation each day and a new permit is required each night. “Tariffs will be paid per-person, per-night and the maximum stay is three nights per camper, per 28 days.” Permits are available from the Karratha Visitor Centre, by calling 9144 4600 or 0437 616 098 after hours.

Teacher sculpts Mary

pilbaraecho www.pilbaraecho.com.au

St Paul’s Primary School unveiled a hand made sculpture of Mary on Friday, May 11, made by teacher assistant at the school and arrtist, Cathie Creswell. Father Steve blessed the sculpture on the Friday along with a prayer assembly held by year 1T for Mary. Also on the day, a slideshow was put on which showed how the sculpture was made. The planning was initiated last year and Cathie had taken photos throughout the whole process. Assistant principal Coby Rhatigan said the slideshow was really interesting for the kids to see first hand how much effort and creativity went into the sculpture.

seen as a feature in the school and a prayer focus. The planning was initiated last year, so it has been a bit of a process.

In the tropical north and the sandy deserts of the west, it has a patchy and seasonal distribution. Diet is varied, with a large number of insects, but also small birds and reptiles, and in particular, small rodents, mostly mice. They will kill with their talons. Nankeen Kestrels are adaptable and hunt in a number of different ways but it does not rely on speed to catch its prey. Instead it simply perches in an exposed position, but it is their habit of hovering motionless that is most distinctive. Typically seen singly, or in pairs, they can aggregate into loose flocks of up to 30 when conditions are right. Pairs are typically monogamous and may or may not disperse to different areas during the nonbreeding season. The nest is any convenient structure: a tree hollow, or cliff ledge. Three to seven eggs are laid in late winter (usually about four) and incubated by the female alone. Hatching takes place after 26 to 28 days, and the male brings food while the female continues to incubate until the young are close to fledging, at which time the female leaves the nest to hunt for them too. Multiple broods are raised in good seasons.

The Australian Kestrel or Nankeen Kestrel (Falco cenchroides) is Australia’s smallest falcon (about 31 to 35 centimetres). The Nankeen Kestrel is a slender falcon and is a relatively small raptor (bird of prey). The upper parts are mostly rufous, with some dark streaking. The wings are tipped with black. The underparts are pale buff, streaked with black and the under tail is finely barred with black, with a broader black band towards the tip. Females tend to be more heavily marked and have more rufous on the crown and tail. Males have a greyish crown and tail, although the extent varies between individuals. Females are larger than males. Young Nankeen Kestrels closely resemble the adult female, with heavier markings. Their slim build, small size and distinctive straightwinged hovering habit, make identification easy. They are a very common and easily seen raptor. The Nankeen Kestrel is found in Australia, New Guinea, and nearby islands. It occupies any type of land that is not too densely vegetated, but in particular temperate grasslands and open woodlands.

• Alan and Mel at Pilbara Echo’s beginning February 29, 2008 The Pilbara Echo celebrates 200 editions this week. With 40 pages and record advertising sales, it is a bumper edition, including the Echo Gig Guide that was launched two weeks ago, which has been a real hit with the community. The paper has seen many changes after the first edition of February 2008, which owner Alan Richardson and his partner Mel Jonsson brought into reality by themselves. The first Pilbara Echo had only 16 pages and included a welcome from the Echo team of Alan and Mel, with the caption, ‘community spirit is the aim of Echo newspaper.’ Articles about a dramatic performance specialist, Sue Gibson, visiting Australian Technical College students; International Women’s Day; kindy kids from Pegs Creek School and SAFE pets and it’s volunteers helped to make the first edition of just 5500

turns 200!

copies. The locally owned community newspaper sees edition 200 having over 14,700 copies! “In the early days of the Pilbara Echo, we were open for three days straight,” said Alan remembering the early days. “Between the paper, the race books for the Roebourne races and the printing work that was coming in, we worked all day and night - Wednesday, Thursday and Friday night – to get it all done. “That’s how we met Mathias; he saw our lights on late one night and came in asking to use the Internet.” Mathias is now the longest serving employee, who works in the printing side of the business, Coral Coast Print. “We often watched McDonalds close and then open again in the morning,” said Mel of the early days of the Echo. Alan said the reason they started the Pilbara Echo, was because as a small

business owner in Karratha, the price of advertising was ridiculously expensive. “I couldn’t afford to advertise my own small business,” he said. “Plus some competition is healthy.” The Echo grew out of Alan’s other business – Coral Coast Print- that is also situated in the Pilbara Echo office. “Instead of complaining about the negative side of things in the area, we prefer to see the positive side,” said Alan of the Echo. As staff numbers have grown with the business, so has the office space and the staff involved in bringing the paper to the Pilbara community. Some new faces and talents now grace the Pilbara Echo office and are committed to bringing the towns of the Pilbara a fresh paper with positive community spirit each week. The Pilbara Echo now has a very positive feel and endeavours to make living in the Pilbara more enjoyable.

Westy (Nathaniel Ihanimo) Some of you may know of Westy through his design and illustration artwork with his personal business, Westytoons. Our contributors/distributors/walkers We wouldn’t be where we are now, without the constant help of our contributors, including the locals who send in articles which they feel are important to share with the community and to our distributors and walkers, who spend their Saturday afternoon and Sunday mornings sorting out the Echo’s and making sure they are delivered on time. Thank you everyone for all your hard work. So many people have worked together to make the Pilbara Echo possible.

A Perth builder you can count on TLB Troy Leaman Building is a family run business that has been handed down from father to son and provides a wide range of construction services. We specialise in building new homes, renovating old homes, kitchens, bathrooms, alfresco’s/ out door kitchens and specialized carpentry work. Troy is a hands on builder and the sole director of the company and has 20 years experience in the construction industry. Troy prides himself on his excellent client liaison skills, ability to tackle difficult and challenging renovations, while still sticking to clients brief.

the job is getting done properly and is not just thrown together. The business started in the 1970’s when Troy’s father Rodger, also a builder, had a large carpentry and building team in Perth. Troy’s father is now retired but loves to visit the site and put his nail bag on. Troy has known since he was a little boy that he wanted to build houses and even starting going to site with his dad from the age of 6.

This gave him the opportunity to learn valuable experience about being a builder and how to use his building ticket properly and effectively. “You have to walk before you can run” said Denis, the owner of Hillcrest Homes. There of thousands of builders in Perth, each one of them specialising on particular parts of building. Troy has learnt the art of home improvements through working with his father and through his own experiences.

“Nothing is a problem, there are only solutions” is his motto.

Once finishing his apprenticeship in carpentry and joinery under the guidance of his father, he decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and became a builder himself.

We try to deliver the best customer service, by providing some of the most experienced trades people in Perth.

Rodger retired and passed the business over to Troy who has continued to take it from strength to strength.

The art of a good renovation is not to be able to see where the new begins and the old finishes.

This in turn lends itself to a speedy delivery of high quality of workmanship.

Some of the difficulties that Troy faced were trying to compete in an industry where there were a lot more experienced builders trying to compete for the same job.

We believe that we offer a good service because we still believe in old-fashioned values. Customer service is essential.

We also provide an in house carpentry team who are familiar with all the different areas of carpentry and joinery i.e. roofing, internal fixing, decking, timber lining etc.

Building a new house is easier.

Troy has perfected this skill.

Being a family owned business and renovating two homes ourselves with two young children, means we understand how hard it is to live through a renovation. This is why we try very hard to stick to time frames and get

THE LIVING END AND THE CAT EMPIRE TO JOIN HILLTOP HOODS

guess who’s coming to dinner!

Having recently announced the first annual North West Festival, set to take over the heart of the Pilbara Region, Port Hedland Sunset Events are thrilled to be adding two amazing

bands to the bill. Joining the Hilltop Hoods at the Port Hedland Turf Club on Saturday, August 18 are The Living End and The Cat Empire. The Living End is quite simply one of Australia’s greatest living rock bands. The infamous trio of Chris Cheney, Scott Owen and Andy Strachan has released six classic albums, two of which have gone to number 1 on the ARIA charts. They have won countless awards including ARIA’s, APRA’s and Jack’s and hold the record for the most consecutive entries in triple j’s Hottest 100, making the cut every year from 1997 – 2006. In an industry where few bands survive beyond the first album, The Cat Empire has consolidated them as a world-class touring

band over decade.

the

past

This is a rare success story, which shows that a combination of hard work, great songs, a good vibe, a genuine vision, and a little bit of luck go a long way. While it looked as though The Cat Empire had come out of nowhere, it was very much the determination and design of front man Felix Riebl, which made this band a solid reality on the Australian Music scene with the release of their debut album back in 2003. Teeing off with their breakout hit, the highly infectious “Hello”, the band has now sold over three quarters of a million albums and DVDs in all corners of the world. They have headlined global festivals, won ARIAs, played on Letterman and Leno, toured many

review ❙ Circa cast at the Matt Dann

❙ Getting into practise for joining the circus

RSL Members & Most Welcome

BINGO “CIRCA” HAS HEADS IN A SPIN By Elise Batchelor Sometimes there are no words, for some nights the theatre can be too mind blowing to get your head around. Such was the case when “Circa” took over the Matt Dann Cultural Centre recently with an acrobatic treat not only mind blowing but mind and indeed, body bending. The ensemble cast of seven young performers who come from circus, gymnastic and dance backgrounds, tested their bodies’ limits of strength, power, flexibility and notably pain, in a series of astonishing danceperformance pieces. Each “dance” seemed to tell a different story, with each story inextricably intertwined with a unique and powerful score, such as the ethereal music of Icelandic band Sigur Rós. As bodies moved in harmony or rebelled against each other and their environment (how many ❙ Fans meet the Circa cast

times can you watch a dancer race on stage and smash their sliding torso onto the floor and not wince in pain yourself?) the audience witnessed extreme emotional dynamics played out in the space as well. Sexual power and play between couples became evident in dances where one taunted the other in lyrical displays of bodies teasing, overpowering or escaping. Hints of themes such as adoration, abandonment, domination and mutual dependence also emanated from the pieces in what became an exploration not only of physical strength, but also of the lengths to which we might go for love and the fickle nature of trust. Such was the case with one piece involving a dubiously wellused red balloon and a pair of red stilettos, in which the strong male was literally walked all over by his female muse.

Eyes down at 8.00pm

GAWTHORNE DRIVE

Call him used and abused, or call her teasing and cheeky, the piece seemed a realisation of the ends people might go to for mateship. Performers also became human skipping ropes or were tossed by toe and head from pair to pair. Watching a woman contort herself in and out of about a dozen sparkling hula hoops in a routine lasting several minutes, makes the “normal” person’s three second achievements chuckleworthy. The audible “wows” from the audience throughout this incredible show were testament to the phenomenal feats of mind and body the cast performed. Circa is touring Western Australia, with concurrent branches of the show being performed in the eastern states and overseas.

KRAFTY KUTS BLOWS CROWD AWAY

Karratha residents were treated to a huge night at the All Seasons Hotel with one of the world’s greatest DJ’s – Krafty Kuts.

❙ Beau, Vicki Greg and Cartledge

The night started with local, admired DJ Panda, who got the crowd pumping and the bass booming at the beginning of the night. Perth’s number one DJ, Micah, then hit the decks before the long-awaited Krafty Kuts, with his famous electronic dance music.

❙ DJ Krafty Kuts and DJ Panda

The All Seasons was packed out with people, dancing to the hits that have given Krafty Kuts his glittering career. Being voted the best DJ in the Breakspoll Awards five times, with his mix of breaks - electro, dubstep, drum ‘n bass and hip hop spectrums - had the crowd blown away from start to finish by the skillset of the hardest working man in the music business. Last week, Joanie Pollock told the story of her experience with her midwives, as part of celebrating International Day of the Midwife, held on May 5.

What’s on for the Biggest Morning Tea?

We at Pilbara Echo, wish to continue to recognise the hard work the midwives do and the appreciation from the families that they help.

By Courtney Bertling

Midwife experiences of the Pilbara Week 2, Jo Madin

If you have a story about a midwife you may like to tell, email news@pilbaraecho.com.au This week, Jo Madin tells her story. My gorgeous little boy Xavier was born in 2008, at Nickol Bay Hospital, although his birth was far from ideal as he was almost seven weeks early. I was sitting in the ambulance on the runway of Karratha Airport, when the waiting RFDS doctor told me that I would have to return to Nickol Bay Hospital for delivery . I was too close to delivering.

. KIDS CLOTHES.. WE’VE GOT YOU COVERED

But my husband was in the Qantas plane taxi-ing along the runway, he was flying to meet me in Perth! And it was the last flight of the day! So, I delivered my first baby, seven weeks early, by myself, in Karratha. Physically, everything went very well, Xavier was small but healthy and I received excellent care. But the highlight for me was the emotional support I received from one very special midwife called Sharon, who I believe is still at Nickol Bay Hospital today. She stayed with me from start to finish almost 12 hours or more - way past the end of her shift. She did not leave my side. She was my one constant and I managed to stay relatively calm and sane because of her. I will never forget her, she was a star. I think midwives enter our lives, particularly first time around, at a particularly vulnerable and emotional time. It’s such a raw experience that I think when you have a good one then it’s hugely wonderful and when you get a bad one it’s hugely awful. I often think about how (emotionally) different it could have been for me had I not had a good midwife. First baby, plus no husband, plus new to Karratha, plus fears of premature complications could have, equals seriously bad experience, but it really was a positive one! Those Nickol Bay Hospital midwives are brilliant. You know they had my husband, mother and mother in law on the phone while I was in labour! Ha, they were great.

Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is one of Australia’s most well loved fundraising events, and plays a vital role in raising money towards the Cancer Council’s work in research, education, prevention and support. Across Australia people will be joining in to support cancer patients on Thursday, May 24. This year, a number of businesses within the Shire of Roebourne will be holding Biggest Morning Tea’s. The Shire of Roebourne’s Dampier Library and Karratha Entertainment Centre will each host a Biggest Morning Tea on Thursday, May 24. Roebourne Shire Council President Fiona White-Hartig said all money raised at the Biggest Morning Tea’s would go towards the Cancer Council’s work in research, education, prevention and support. “Head to the shaded picnic area next to Dampier Library from 10am onwards to support the Cancer Council and indulge in a homebaked morning tea by our seniors and the library,” said Cr WhiteHartig. “Those planning to attend the 11.30am to 12.30pm tea at the Karratha Entertainment Centre are encouraged to bring along a healthy snack or a mouthwatering treat to share. “A fundraising raffle will be held with two-dollar tickets and prizes including one month free membership to the Karratha Entertainment Centre; vouchers for Nirvana Hair and Body Sanctum, Nails Are Us, and Cool Change. “These are great community

Volunteers fill the gap in rural Australia

Its National Volunteer week from May 14-20 and Outback Links is calling on more people to lend a hand off the beaten track. Volunteers fill the gap for people in rural and remote Australia who do not have access to the same services that are available in larger towns and cities. On average, 50 volunteers a month travel to remote parts of Australia with a frontier Service’s program called Outback Links. They offer their time and skills for up to three weeks to assist families in a variety of ways. “People living in remote Australia cannot rely on the support and services that most people take for granted in the city,” said Outback Links Coordinator Davida Melksham. “More than ever, there are fewer services available on the ground, where people live. “With the lure of well-paid mining work, it is much harder to attract staff and labour on rural and remote properties.” Ms Melksham explains, “What sets Outback Links apart is that we are able to carefully match existing needs with volunteers who have the appropriate skills.” “Probably the most common feedback we have from volunteers is that they have a whole new appreciation of the lifestyle and work loads for people on the the land.

• The display of 100 pink lady silhouettes at the front of Retravision

Pink ladies raise thousands Karratha Cancer Support Group and Retravision displayed a Mini-Field of Women last weekend. The visual display of 100 pink lady silhouettes was held at the front of Retravision, along with a Mother’s Day stall, including gifts donated by Retravision. The pink lady silhouettes on display symbolised the 14,000 Australian women diagnosed with breast cancer and the 2,600 women who die from it each year. The day was a huge success, raising $1500 for the Karratha Cancer Support Group and over $1600 for the Mini-Fields of Women. Tins are still being collected, so this figure is sure to go up. A Mini-Fields of Women event is for the community to gather together to show support and pay tribute to women and their families affected by breast cancer. The Karratha Cancer Support Group would

like to thank Retravision for their generosity and support. Retravision also donated a 31” LCD TV, a Kitchen Mixer and a digital camera for the raffles, along with a beautiful bunch of flowers donated by Red Earth Flowers.

• Karratha Cancer Support Group member Michelle Louis

“They can come in and help with the endless, everyday jobs that get shelved because less help is available; that might be in the garden, in the schoolroom, in the house or out on the run. “It makes a big difference for the families to have some additional support around, particularly when they are extra busy.” While the volunteers make a huge impact in the lives of the families they visit, it’s a two way street according to volunteers John and Shan Sharp. “We get so much out of this,” they said. “The appreciation for what we do is phenomenal and we’ve met so many wonderful people out here. “The more work we do on properties around rural and remote Australia, the better we feel both physically and spiritually.” Often the experience forges life-long friendships between the volunteers and families, with many staying in touch long after they say goodbye. Ms Melksham added, ”As the gap between the city and bush seems to get wider, Outback Links is jhelping to bridge that divide, increasing understanding and building connections across the country.”

Inspiring stories at the

c i s s a l C y a D s r e h t Mo 

By Courtney Bertling

For more than a decade, the Mother’s Day Classic fun run and walk has provided communities with a great way to celebrate Mother’s Day and raise funds for breast cancer research.

• Racing to the finish line

• The Baynton Babes

• Cameron Briggs, Maddison and Olivier Raphael

And last Sunday, May 13, was no different, with more than 440 people turning up to the Bulgarra Oval to either run or walk. Gathered around a truck before the race, MC, Margaret Bertling, spoke about the inspirational men and women out there who have and still do, deal with cancer. Standing on the truck with Margaret, were the eight-committee members behind the Mother’s Day Classic. “One in nine women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime,” Margaret said. “So there’s one, two, three,” she counted the committee members. When getting to herself, “Nine… oh,” she stopped. “Oh wait, Narelle, she has survived breast cancer, so we’re all good,” she pointed to the committee members and herself. “Not too sure about you guys out there though,” she and the crowd laughed. Narelle Naulls, breast cancer survivor and Mother’s Day Classic committee member, took to the microphone and told the crowd about her journey and why the

Mother’s Day Classic is so important. “The shock and the horror is so unexplainable,” she said. “But I learnt early on, that as a coping mechanism, I would take the mickey out of myself whenever possible. “Some things I said were, ‘I don’t know where to finish my foundation’, ‘I got a free Brazilian wax minus the pain’ and ‘even though I lost all my hair, I still had to shave my legs’.” You could hear the emotion and the pain of Narelle’s journey when she spoke, especially about her kids. “My son is my little hero - when he was five, he had to be his little sister’s carer,” she said. “But through it all, I have discovered what a wonderful community Karratha is and that is evident today.” A minute silence was then held for those who haven’t survived the battle of breast cancer. Before the crowd enjoyed a warm-up held by Jenna Ferreira and Shari Tindall from the Karratha Entertainment Centre, Margaret finished off the heart-felt speeches. “When someone gets cancer, we all go through the journey with them,” she said. “That is what today is all about, we are going on a journey with those who are suffering cancer.” Another lady was proving that breast cancer is no match for her was Janette Yeatman.

This time last year, Janette was going through her second round of chemo and was bald as could be. “I wanted to prove a point that if I could run the eight kms last year, then I could beat this,” she said. “And now, I have my hair back, and I am in my two-year waiting period to see if it stays away or comes back.” With her were her husband Mike, her son Jed and three friends, Jenny Treib and Ross and John Marks. “These people helped me through every step of the way and last year they walked in the Mother’s Day Classic, so here we are again,” she said. “I’m not running the eight kms this year, I’m walking, in honour of everyone who walked with me through my journey.” To Jenny Treib, Janette is her inspiration. “She got me out of my comfort zone, she is just inspiring.” During the day, Izzy the Lizard was there helping with stretches before the race, the kids were able to enjoy themselves on the bouncy castles and there were also demonstrations on what to look out for in breast and testicular cancer. After the race, participants enjoyed a free sausage sizzle put on by the Karratha Apex and SR Cakes donated more than 400 pink cupcakes, waking up early that morning to add the finishing touches.

WPSO season kicks off By Claire Moran

• Ethan & Hayley

So, We Think We Wanna Dance Hayley Bruce and Ethan Louis are preparing themselves for their Royal Academy of Dance Intermediate Ballet Exam in July/August. An exam at this level requires specialist preparation and about 6 hours a week in the dance studio, as well as body conditioning exercises to hone their bodies to meet the challenge they have set themselves. During the April School holidays Hayley and Ethan attended the RAD Autumn Vocational School in Perth, where they experienced worldclass tuition alongside their metropolitan peers. “Every time we get to dance in the city it rejuvenates our passion and motivates us to work even harder. It’s amazing to dance with other students and see the incredible talent out there. One of our teachers, Ms Veronica Mahon danced with the Australian Ballet and Sydney Dance Company and she was just so awesome and inspiring” Ethan said. Hayley and Ethan’s local ballet teacher, Megan WoodHill of Ovation Performance Company observed some of the classes and was extremely impressed by the quality of feedback received and the giving nature of the tutors involved.

“Their encouragement of Ethan was particularly thrilling as he is very much going it alone in the Karratha environment. “Lots of boys are attracted to Street Dance, but very few see what Ethan sees regarding a potential career in a dance company. “Boys are very much in demand in the world of ballet and contemporary dance. It’s an exciting prospect for both of them to imagine themselves travelling the world living their passion” said Megan. While in Perth, private tuition with one of Perth’s leading ballet instructors and RAD examiners, confirmed our belief that Hayley and Ethan are on track in their pursuit of dance careers. “While they both have a lot of hard work ahead of them, it was very exciting to see such enthusiasm expressed regarding their ability and attitudes. “Physical capability is only half the battle. “With all pursuits in excellence you must be mentally strong and never give up, even when it gets tough. “They are both rising to the challenge and are a great support for each other” Megan said. For further information on Ovation Performance Company visit their website, www. ovationperformance.com.au

On Saturday afternoon the ladies from the West Pilbara Softball Organisation made their way down to Bulgarra Oval to kick start the 2012 WPSO season. The afternoon got underway with the 2011 Champions Inland Storm taking on a very strong Wickham 1 side. The away side started off very convincingly and stayed resilient throughout the whole game, keeping Inland Storm off the home plate, bar one run by Kyla Thomas. Inland Storm has started off the season with a much less experienced side than they had last year, with this being their first defeat since the end of 2010. The Wickham side batted for about 75% of the game, consistently hitting into the gaps to put the burden on the outfield. Their new pitcher Coco, also put a great amount of pressure on with her intense pitching and batting skills, which almost took out Inland Storms pitcher Char Joseph, taking a hit straight off the bat! In the end, the stronger side took the game with Wickham defeating the Champs by an impressive 13 runs. The next teams to start off their season were Geckos and Orbits; Geckos reached the grand final last year only to be beaten in a nail biting game that ended in a tie break decider, seeing

them take second position in the Championship. It seems that a lot can change in the off-season, with Geckos fielding a very new and somewhat inexperienced team. The teams didn’t get to see the match through to the end as Geckos struggled for numbers from the outset. The game lasted two innings, with Orbits looking very strong, getting 18 runs across the plate, with Mereana Joseph hitting an impressive two home runs, before Geckos had to forfeit. Due to work and personal commitments, Geckos have sadly been struggling for numbers this year and are still on the lookout for new players, so if you’re interested in getting involved please contact the WPSO president Barrie Sargeant on 91442443. The remaining games of the day saw Sinners take on the WPSO’s newest side Pilbara Perk and Dampier Falcons took on Wickham 2. Both Sinners and Pilbara Perk have had a number of players join them this season that haven’t played softball previously, which made it a good match up for their first game. Sinners did look to be the stronger side in their fielding ability but the Pilbara Perk had a very strong batting line up, which kept Sinners on their toes in the outfield. Jodi Stilson took a remarkable catch in right field, with the ball

firstly popping out of her glove, off her chest, with her catching it again in her other hand! Angie Ayers also had an impressive first game in centre with only one big hit getting past her mitt! In the end Sinners ended up taking the game 26-14. Both sides look like they will become stronger as the season progresses, starting next week when Pilbara Perk take on the Dampier Falcons and Sinners take on Wickham 2 at 2pm down at Bulgarra Oval. The 4pm games see Orbits take on Inland Storm and Wickham 1 take on Geckos. Please come down and support your local teams and if you want to get involved in any way at all, whether it’s scoring, coaching, umpiring or playing please come down or contact our President Barrie Sargeant for further information. See you around the diamond.

Join in the fun of BMX By Matt Power BMX Racing is back in full swing for 2012, having completed the first three rounds. With over 90 riders competing every Friday night, the racing has been very competitive. A few first round classing issues saw the start of round one delayed, but the ladies in registration got the classes sorted and racing was under way. The following rounds have got a lot smoother, as the club and riders get back in to the swing of Friday night racing under lights. With the support of Rio Tinto, Tania Bailey (2008 Olympic Rider) is coming to town to provide coaching to our riders; in particular we are holding sessions for the female riders.

Having an elite rider provides our riders with the opportunity to learn valuable skills. The Karratha BMX Club welcomes new members all year round and there are several options for those wishing to come along and try out BMX Racing. Anyone can come along and give it a go, from the sprockets to the more mature and even a few of the mum’s have taken to the track. Our youngest rider (three years) has been at all three rounds and is starting to get around the track by himself. For more information please visit www. karrathabmx.asn.au or come down on Friday nights.

Big thrills and spills next weekend at speedway By Chantelle Dalgarno The annual Sprintcar Spectacular has been a major racing event at Nickol Bay Speedway for decades, attracting competitors from the far reaches of Australia to compete on what a lot of travelling drivers have described as ‘one of the best racing surfaces in the country!’ Saturday, May 26 will see local and travelling drivers from as far as Mandurah, go head to head to compete for their share of the $10 000 prize pool at the Bridgestone Chameleon Sprintcar Spectacular. For those new to the area or new to the sport, in Karratha Sprintcars are infamous for producing some of the biggest thrills (and spills) at Nickol Bay Speedway. With vehicles capable of reaching speeds of up to 240KPH around a 500m slippery clay and dirt track, while surrounded by concrete and steel walls which

are re-enforced with thousands of tonnes of compacted rock and earth; it takes a lot of skill, concentration and courage for drivers to strap themselves into a metal cage topped with a wing that will literally make them fly if just one tyre “bites” the track a little too hard. It takes even more courage and concentration to stand in the centre of the action while drivers try every trick (and occasionally a few that aren’t) in the book to win their share of the massive prize pool. As such, non-emergency personnel will not be present on the in-field during racing for their own safety. The Flag Marshalls, who are responsible for relaying instructions to the drivers from the Chief Steward via a complex system of flags, will be moved to the exclusion zone between the main track fence and the public safety fence.

The Nickol Bay Speedway Committee and Racing Officials request that the public do not approach these volunteers at any time or for any reason during racing – they must remain completely focused for the safety of the drivers and emergency personnel on the infield. In advance, Nickol Bay Speedway would like to thank Bridgestone Karratha and Chameleon Resources for their donation of the $10 000 prize pool; Onsite Rentals for donating extra toilet facilities for the anticipated large crowds and our entire volunteer workforce for making this event possible. Gates open at 6pm, with racing starting at 7pm. Adults: $20 // 7-16yrs: $5 // Under 7’s: FREE. NO BYO alcohol as bar and canteen facilities available at the track.

Norton scores nine goals in round six Round six of the Newman National Football League was held last weekend with the Tigers defeating the Saints, 10.18(78) to 8.10(58). For the Tigers, Parr scored four

goals, while Michoff and Dickie both scored two. And for the Saints, Cocodis and Jones scored two goals each, while McMurtrie, Mallard, Smithers and Thorpe all scored

one each. The Centrals then defeated the Pioneers 26.25(181) to 1.5(11) with Norton scoring nine goals for the Centrals and Groves scoring one goal for the Pioneers.

Smith wins by three seconds By Dale Hannemann Last Saturday saw 39 riders take on the Baynton Power Poles course in round two of the 2012 Scott Cycles Mountain Bike Series. A warm, calm afternoon was about to be disrupted as the riders set off in a cloud of dust, trying to find an ideal amount of racing room and settle into a good pace. In Elite (six laps) four riders went lap for lap with a gap of only eight seconds. Mark Smith snatched the lead on the last lap from Darryl Collins to win by three seconds in 40:30. A duel for third between Troy Atkinson and Tristan Wood-Hill saw Troy have an involuntary dismount 300m from the finish and Roman Raudonikis sneak through to finish in third in 42:42. In Expert (five laps) Jim Macleod took a comfortable

win (36:44) against a battered and injured Andries Van der Walt (37:15) and third went to Trevor Phelps (37:48) who is showing some real speed after a DNF in the first race, having jumped up a class since last season. Aaron Day (30:08) held off a strong attack from Toby Muller (30:18) who has moved up to the Sport class (four laps) away from Junior and is enjoying the free time away from BMX. Mathew Oronce, (31:33) also an ex-junior, finished third and these guys will be looking for wins this year. A good class of Ladies (four laps) have taken to the hills and are settling in. Sally Smith (32:03) took a comfortable win from Tania Neeson (36:27) and Mikayla Smith, who is another moving up from Juniors, finishing third (39:45). In the Junior class (two

laps) Jarrad Pickford (19:19) took the win with William Gethin (21:24) in second and Lachlan Pickford in third with a (28:56). The six-hour race for 2012 is scheduled for Saturday, June 23. The date is fast approaching, so get your team together for the race. This year sees the introduction of a new course without the big hill, so make sure you’re there to try it. With the party atmosphere and team riding it is the one event of the year that you do not want to miss. Full race results from this round and directions for the next race on the Hidden Valley short course on May 26 are available on the club website at http://home.spin. net.au/burrupmb.
