To whom it may concern, I am a resident of Dampier and would like to alert residents to possible thieves in the area. On Thursday evening around 5.30pm a gun metal grey Holden commodore station wagon containing a male and female, possibly in their 20’s stopped outside our house. The female got out of the car and took a photo of the property. She then got back in the car and they drove off. My husband was walking down towards the front of the house to see who it was when the male looked at him and drive off quickly. He didn’t attempt to tell my husband who he was and what he was doing. Enquiries with the real estate and owner revealed that they had not organized anyone to take photos. We are very concerned that someone may be casing properties for future theft. My husband was unable to get a registration number of the vehicle and we have not reported it to Police as we really have no information. I would however like the community to be aware of the security and the possibility that thieves may be on the lookout. Regards Julie Langlois

Thinker in Residence Thinker in Residence, Dr Stuart Shanker, is visiting Roebourne to discuss how communities can strengthen children and young people’s capacity to regulate their emotions and behaviour. The Thinker in Residence is an initiative of the Commissioner for Children and Young People, Michelle Scott and was created to provide WA with access to leading research and knowledge concerning the wellbeing of children and young people. “The theme of Dr Shanker’s residency is self-regulation, which refers to the ability to monitor and modify emotions, to focus or shift attention, to control impulses and to tolerate frustration or delay gratification,” Ms Scott said. “I was very keen for Dr Shanker to visit regional WA so he is able to share his understanding of self-regulation with teachers, parents and others, and discuss strategies which have been effective in his work with First Nations people in Canada.
“While clearly there will be differences, I hope that many aspects of Dr Shanker’s work will have relevance for Aboriginal people in Western Australia. “Dr Shanker is keen to hear from members of the Roebourne community and service providers about what is working in Roebourne to provide children with a positive start to life.” Nearly 41 per cent of Aboriginal people in WA are under the age of 18 years, compared to the 23 per cent of under 18s in the State’s total population. The 2006 census shows there are 225 Aboriginal children and young people in Roebourne. “This means that if we can provide the right supports and programs we can positively influence the lives of a large generation, and hopefully break the cycle of disadvantage,” Ms Scott said. Robyn Sermon, General Manager – Communities with Rio Tinto, said the company was pleased to work with Ms
Scott to bring Dr Shanker to Roebourne. “Our partnership on the 2012 Thinker in Residence program builds on Rio Tinto’s commitment to support the health and wellbeing of children and young people in the Pilbara, and throughout Western Australia,” she said. “Dr Shanker is a world leader in child development. “It is a wonderful opportunity for community representatives in the region to learn about his strategies and how they can benefit their relationships with children at home and in their work. “It is initiatives like this that can make a real difference on the ground.” Ms Scott said she was pleased many organisations have recognised the value of Dr Shanker’s visit by supporting the 2012 Thinker in Residence program. Rio Tinto and the departments of Education and Health have provided particular assistance for the Roebourne visit. Photo courtesy of Aaron Bunch

Am I odd wishing I actually had a live soundtrack to accompany my finest moments? You know that feeling, sitting in the car, hitting 110 on the open road and cranking up the volume on whatever super cool music floats your boat and makes you feel like – insert celebrity of choice – at some gala event. The reality is perhaps a little less exotic, but who needs cool when you can have 80s pop? Errr…
Play it loud, OK?

If life came with a soundtrack Plugged right into your brain Would yours be like a movie Or rockstar’s wild refrain? I often wish I had one When moments overwhelm To turn up all my party hits When I’m right at the helm
Or sorting out the pantry (the nips are getting bigger), and picking up a thousand toys the Barbie soundtrack niggles. A petrol bowser microphone is, boy, some price parade! The spewing fuel, oh such romance, death metal serenade.
and ruler of the universe and captain of my ship to PLAY IT LOUD, OK! I’d say and let it bl**dy rip! Unfortunately, though it seems, my soudtrack’s rarely cool. Yeah, sure, I’ve got the volume up but shovelling kids to school
Unfortunate this tedium, yet burning steak in error, that stupid soundtrack in my brain unleashes all its terror. For beef I cook deplorably, a butcher’s world of sin, and an anti Christlike harmony, the soundtrack’s Kath and Kim.
holds just as much enticing joy as scrambled eggs all curdled and so, were I to turn things up I’d get a high pitched yodel. There’s cleaning up the kitchen: the pots and pans and kettle. I listen carefully to the track and out pounds heavy metal.
If life came with a soundtrack plugged right into your brain Would yours play Meatloaf on repeat or the Angry Birds refrain? I tell you what though, here’s the thing, I’d rather mine each day than my dear love’s whose life’s Belinda Carlisle. All the way.

New Bristow Helicopter hangar Bristow Helicopters Australia has started work on the construction of a new $7 million helicopter hangar and heliport at Karratha Airport. The Director of Bristow’s Australia Business Unit, Mr Allan Blake, was onsite to officially mark the first stage of construction, along with Bristow’s Pilot in Charge and Chief Engineer. Mr Blake said that the new hangar and heliport would provide modern facilities to support its helicopter services to some of Australia’s most significant offshore drilling and production facilities. “This new facility will help us to continue providing passengers with a reliable, safe and smooth journey to and from work,” he said. “The heliport, in particular, will make our passengers’ journeys
easier by enabling them to embark directly from our facility to their offshore workplace, rather than from Karratha’s main airport terminal.” Bristow provides helicopter support for oil and gas operations by major clients Apache Energy, Santos and Vermillion. The hangar is being built by local Western Australian company, Northwest Shedmasters, and is expected to take six months to complete. It will accommodate up to five large helicopters. “Bristow Australia is delighted to be making this significant investment in Karratha and reinforcing our commitment to our clients in the region,” added Mr Blake.

Temporary interruption to water supply in Karratha Water supply to parts of Karratha will be interrupted on Thursday, 21 June from 12.00am to 4.30am to enable the Water Corporation to complete essential works on the town’s water scheme. Water Corporation North West Regional Manager Kerrie Chapman, said areas affected will include businesses and homes east of Balmoral Road, including the Karratha Town Centre, Karratha Centro Shopping Centre, Searipple Camp and Bulgarra. “The works are required as part of the refurbishment of the Karratha town storage tank, which is located on the hill behind the Visitors Centre,” Mrs Chapman said. “Once commissioned later in the year, this second storage tank will significantly increase the water
storage capacity in Karratha and provide improved pressure in certain areas of town. “Some residents may notice their water is aerated and discoloured when supply is switched back on, but this will quickly disappear.” Mrs Chapman said she appreciated the community’s understanding during these essential works to improve Karratha’s town water supply. The Corporation encourages residents to manage their own water needs during the supply interruption. People with special water requirements during this time are urged to contact the Corporation on 13 13 75, well in advance of the supply interruption.
“Some residents may notice their water is aerated and discoloured when supply is switched back on, but this will quickly disappear.”
Have your say on city centre parking policy A NEW draft policy intended to guide parking in the Karratha town centre is in development at the Shire of Roebourne. Shire residents are invited to comment on the Draft Karratha City Centre Parking Policy before June 20. Shire of Roebourne Acting Chief Executive Officer Simon Kot said 27 per cent of the Karratha city centre was devoted to car parking, with a further 23 per cent of the area paved for vehicle circulation and access. “Today, the city centre is spread out over a wide area, which makes shopping an often-difficult and inefficient experience,” Mr Kot said. “The 40 per cent of city centre land area currently devoted to car parking and vehicle circulation can be far more efficiently used.” This draft policy is supported by a Parking Supply and Management Strategy. Together, these documents set out a range of ways to improve the supply of parking and increase the efficient use of parking spaces in the Karratha city centre. The draft parking policy provides guidance on when the Shire may vary parking required in the City Centre
Zone and sets out details for a cash-inlieu contribution for reductions in the provision of on-site parking. Meanwhile, the Parking Supply and Management Strategy sets out maximum and minimum parking to be supplied for non-residential uses in the City Centre Zone with a permissible discount of 10 per cent for residential developments compared to the Residential Codes. The proposed cash-in-lieu generated through the implementation of this new parking policy will contribute towards the provision of more efficient on-road and multi-level parking in future in the Karratha’s central area and opens the way for improved pedestrian, bicycle and disabled access. The draft policy will be available for public comment until 20 June, 2012. The Draft Karratha City Centre Parking Policy and the Karratha City Centre Parking Supply and Management Strategy are available at www. roebourne.wa.gov.au/parkingpolicy or by visiting the Shire of Roebourne Administration Office on Welcome Road, Karratha.

A Heart of Mulga by Tracey Evans
Family, friends and sponsors gathered in Dampier last week to lend support to two local men who were setting off on the journey of a lifetime.
• The trip is all about family
Dave Peck and Mick Tuthill will take three weeks on trail bikes, to ride through the outback deserts of Western and South Australia, while making a film to highlight historic sites and their interactions with the local aboriginal people. Dave and Mick set off on Sunday on a trip which will take them through Newman and Wiluna, along four wheel drive tracks through to Warburton and Warakurna, to raise money for charity. They are aiming for Mimili Aboriginal Community, not far from the Northern Territory border, in South Australia. They have gained special permission to visit the community and to meet with the elders.
Free Weekly 16 -17 June 2012
Dave told us that an aboriginal family at the community adopted both men 26 years ago when they lived there and now they want to help by recording their story and catching up with them again. “Mick and I grew up on Mimilli,” Dave said. “Our adopted father has passed but we still have contact there and still speak the language and that’s become the heart of the film and we decided to go back there and it comes back to family. “We are going back to family, we are leaving family; so that’s where it becomes a bit of a personal journey. “That’s the major part of the story – that is our story, so it’s not a lad’s trip. “We didn’t want to have a travel documentary, we wanted to record the culture, its positive its negative, and you only see the negative.” Dave added. Dave stressed that it was about a couple of guys breaking away from the monotony of society and finding out that you go back to grass roots and then find out the importance of your own family. “If you go somewhere really remote you do find you miss the family quite a lot.
Rio Tinto Iron Ore proposes to enter into an ILUA (Area Agreement) pursuant to Subdivision C of Division 3 of Part 2 of the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) (Proposed ILUA) with the Ngarlawangga native title claim group.
‘When you come back you really see the rewards, you’ve got something to come back to rather than not come back to. “You have to come back and not fall in the same trap of doing it all over again and getting tied up in life. Dave and Mick hosted a night at Thai Lanna Restaurant in Dampier last week where invited guests had the opportunity to speak to the support crew, study a map of the trip, look at the trail bikes up close and touch the support vehicles; including a sturdy four wheel drive covered in sponsors’ logo’s and Dave’s trusty, old Ford ute. All money raised from sales of the DVD will go to charity. The Pilbara Echo is one of the sponsors. Dave was looking forward to getting five kilometres down the road and unraveling some of the true culture and secrets in Australia.

Tick one off the bucket list I was charmed by this friendly town and soon discovered there’s so many more reasons to venture to Exmouth By Susanne Braithwaite Trekking in Nepal, Bungy jumping in NZ and swimming with the Whale sharks in Exmouth – all things at the top of my ’ bucket list’. So since my recent move to the region, I’ve been excited at the prospect of taking up this opportunity of a lifetime. Whale sharks arrive at Ningaloo Reef to feed on the microscopic creatures known as zooplankton around March and generally stay until July. The various Whale shark tour operators offer a full day for visitors to fully experience these wonderful creatures up close and provide everything you need to enjoy your day. Starting early with a pick up direct from the hotel and an informative tour of Exmouth and its surrounds, we pass local points of interest like the old US Navy base and the amazing transmitter ‘Tower Zero’ that has stood the test of time. Choosing to take my plunge with ’ Kings’, it’s not long before we are on board the ‘Magellan’ and we are motoring out to the Ningaloo Reef. A practice snorkel and plenty of experienced instruction on hand, makes even the most novice snorkeler’s feel confident as we explore the reef that is teeming with an amazing array of colourful fish and even the odd reef shark.
The spotter planes were up and in what seemed like minutes – it was all systems go. Time to tackle those nerves and just take the plunge! Whale sharks come up to swim just below the water’s surface to warm their skin in the sun and filter feed, which gives us the wonderful opportunity to see them up close. The idea is we drop into the water ahead of the Whale shark and wait for him to swim past us. The first time I looked under the water and saw this amazing animal that was as big as a mini bus, just gently cruise past me, was breathtaking. Moving so effortlessly through the water, it felt like I got caught up in his slipstream and it was effortless to just tag along for the ride with him for a while. We got the opportunity to swim with these giants about five times, so we definitely had the chance to work up an appetite, and the delicious gourmet lunch on board hit the spot perfectly. In all, an unforgettable experience that lived up to my expectations. I was charmed by this friendly town and soon discovered there’s so many more reasons to venture to Exmouth: Cape Range National Park, picturepostcard Turquoise Bay, boutique shopping, resort accommodation and quality dining - it’s the perfect place to relax and take a break.

Students in the garden Dampier Primary students have another great activity to participate in during Tuesday lunchtimes. Our gardener Mrs Moy and our deputy Mrs Smyth take a growing number of students to the vegetable garden and surrounding school garden to help plant and maintain garden beds. We have met for 3 weeks and so far the students have planted bean seeds and tomato plants, weeded a garden bed and today they planted cuttings. Next week we hope to have collected a range of fruit and vegetable seeds from the kitchens of the students, which we will pot and hope to plant at a future date. The students gain knowledge about how to correctly handle seeds and small cuttings. They have learnt how to correctly dig out weeds, roots and all. Some students have taken on the responsibility of watering our new seeds and cuttings. The Gardening Club gives students an opportunity to help grow and care for plants and our school environment. They will also reap the benefits when we get to sample the produce from the vegetable patch.
“Some students have taken on the responsibility of watering our new seeds and cuttings.”

DIRT
It’s early winter in Melbourne and the chill might have descended, but right now the surf’s the living end for Andy Strachan. “It’s been two of the best days of the year I reckon,” he says. “It’s been pumping, so excuse me for being overly excited.” Excitement is something, however, that Strachan had to get his head around quick smart when he took up the position of drummer for legend Aussie band The Living End about decade ago. Strachan’s at home in Barwon Heads when he makes the apology, confessing to a euphoria perhaps only matched by one of the band’s besotted fans. But right now, he and the band aren’t on the road greeting their masses, so he has a chance to greet the water and hang out with his wife and young daughter down the coast from Victoria’s capital city, and be full on in other ways. “When we’re not touring I’m pretty much full time dad,” Strachan offers.
“And when I’m away, obviously I’m not dad at all - we get the best of both worlds really.” Since 1994, The Living End has provided a rousing richness to the musical tapestry of Australian music. A couple of Melbourne Wheelers Hill boys, Chris Cheney and Scott Owen, merged their affection for rockabilly and punk to form first a cover band – The Runaways – before becoming The Living End. Armed with Cheney’s voice and stunning guitar, the idiosyncratic cool of Owen’s double bass and a procession of drummers, the band soon had hit airplay with songs such as “Second Solution” and “Prisoner of Society”. Having generated themselves a solid rock resume, and lead singer and guitarist Cheney then suffering a car accident in 2001, Strachan became the band’s ultimate drummer in 2002 and things took off even more.

“Chris has been noodling around with a few riff ideas so we’ll hash it out, take it day by day and song by song; we don’t want to have any preconceived ideas,” Strachan says. Indeed, the organic nature of the musical experience is vital. “When it’s right, you know it and everyone in the room starts to get excited and the process of creation is so different every time,” he adds. As with their huge album “White Noise”, which spawned the massive hit of the same name, culling from thirty songs appeared impossible at first. “They were good, they were really good, but they just weren’t amazing,” Strachan states, matter of fact, “and then Chris came in with this octave pedal and it just made his guitar sound like a Harley Davidson and he started playing the riff to ‘How do we know’ and Scott and I just both had tears in our eyes, we were so excited. “It took months and months to find that sound and it just happened in an instant. “I’ll never forget those sort of things you know, and we’re pretty lucky to have experienced them.” Not only creating music, but coming to grips with fame and fans still has Strachan waking some days in disbelief. “We’re so appreciative of having fans; it allows us to do what we do and we’re forever grateful for it and we’re overwhelmed sometimes by the amount of support we’ve had and continue to receive.” Come August 18, North West Festival ticketholders will be on the receiving end of thrills from The Living End. It’s been about six years since the group played in the Pilbara and Kimberley and they can’t wait to return. “We’ve got this show coming up and that’s our chance to get together again,” Strachan says. “We had to do it because we don’t get that opportunity to get up there that often and to tour off your own bat is near on impossible. “It’s a no brainer.”

• Hollerin Matt Southon
s ...comes to town e u l B n i w r a D d a o R l a v i t s Fe . . . . w o Sh As part of the build-up to the increasingly popular Darwin Blues Festival on June 29, WAMI award winner Junior Bowles and East coast touring blues man Hollerin’ Matt Southon are combining. The Darwin Blues Festival Travelling Road Show has a run of gigs through WA and the NT this June and July. WA’s own Junior Bowles has spent all of 2011 living the life of the itinerant, gypsy bluesman, travelling the length and breadth of the country plying his original brand of pre-war inspired blues and promoting his 2011 WAMI award winning album, ‘The Time Will Come’. “2011 has been a big year for getting out there,” says Junior. “The experience has been great, the music has been really well accepted in small places and big gigs alike, and winning the WAMI award was like icing on the cake.” And there have been some big gigs indeed,
including two support slots for Cold Chisel during the Perth leg of their recent tour, and appearances at the Australian Blues Festival and festivals in Darwin, Cairns and Tasmania. Joining Junior is East coast blues man Hollerin’ Matt Southon, another muso who has lived most of 2011 on tour, playing some of the biggest blues festivals including Bridgetown, Darwin, Cairns and Woodford festivals and making a few high profile fans in the process.
Dallas Frasca reckons he ‘conjures up the spirits of the past’; Lloyd Spiegel says his sound is a ‘raw cry from the soul’ and Geoff Bell, the Director of the Australian Blues Festival, thinks Matt ‘plays the blues how it should be played, with passion’. Described as frightening in its intensity, but still raucous, fun and entertaining, he says his music is drawn from the bottom of his soul to create a passion people can connect to. “Mate the kind of blues I play - or even just the kind of music that I enjoy listening to - is music that is presented with guts and emotion,” says the bluesman.
events CONCIERGE EXPRESS KARRATHA Hungry? Don’t waste your time!
“It’s a combination of that and the fact that when I try and be tidy and pretty, it just doesn’t work!” he laughed. Both musicians agree that their respective styles are very well suited to each other and are both looking forward to the Road Show gigs. “I’ve played on the same bill with Junior a few times now and I really enjoy the way he plays his blues, he knows what it’s about. “I never fail to be blown away at how well he captures that pre-war sound and combines it with his original lyrics” notes Matt, while Junior suggests that Matt’s music has a “… Powerful drive and groove reminiscent of delta blues, with a realness that is rare in so much of today’s music scene...”

YABU BAND WINS ‘INDIGENOUS ARTIST OF THE YEAR’ On completion of a highly successful sold-out tour, Yabu Band received some well deserved recognition by winning Indigenous Artist Of The Year at the 2012WAMi Awards on June 2. The annual WAMi Festival kicked off on May 26, with the awards ceremony held on the final night that celebrates the great West Australian talent on offer. Coming off the back of a sold out tour throughout Western Australia and a show in both Melbourne and Alice Springs, Yabu Band’s efforts have been acknowledged and have paid off in their home state of Western Australia. The WAMi Festival runs over one week and the awards night is held on the last day. Yabu Band’s continual commitment is to bring youth substance abuse to the forefront of mainstream Australia’s mind. Yabu Band has an exciting year ahead. They have secured a prestigious performance slot
at the National Indigenous Music Awards to be held in Darwin on August 11, 2012. They also look forward to releasing a new album titled ‘My Tjila’, meaning ‘My Country’, towards the end of the year that will contain the highly emotional, message driven track Petrol Paint & Glue as well as new progressive and innovative indigenous music. With the National Indigenous Music Award nominations now open and with Yabu Band to perform, we expect see Yabu Band receiving more accolades on the night and solidifying them as one of Australia’s top indigenous acts.

Helping Heal with Art Children from Millars Well Primary School have donated their artworks to adorn the walls of Nickol Bay Hospital. They will be placed in a new special children’s treatment room. Young children undergoing minor treatments or procedures can find hospital environments daunting and unfamiliar. The aim of the artwork and the new procedure room is to provide an environment that gives colour and comfort whilst undergoing treatment. Local paediatrician Dr Anand Deshmukh said the room helps to reassure children that hospitals are places for healing, even if they have little hurts along the way. “I got the idea from working at Princess Margaret Hospital where they perform a lot of procedures, and I immediately thought how wonderful it would be for our children in Karratha to have access to a similar room for treatments,” Dr Deshmukh said. “The room is decorated in an ‘under the sea’ theme thanks to paintings donated by students at the local Millars Well Primary School; this is an effective distraction for children
undergoing a variety of procedures. “We have noticed a huge improvement in patient recovery since the room opened and have had a positive reaction from parents, carers and the children.” WA Country Health Service-Pilbara Acting Regional Director Jan Cook said Dr Deshmukh was the first Community Paediatrician in West Pilbara. The position in Karratha is funded under the $38.2 million Pilbara Health Initiative – a fiveyear partnership between the State Government Royalties for Regions program and the WA Chamber of Minerals and Energy’s Pilbara Industry’s Community Council (PICC) Health initiative members (BHP Billiton Iron Ore, Chevron Australia Pty Ltd, North West Shelf Joint Venture, Rio Tinto and Woodside Energy), which aims to boost health services in the region. “Dr Deshmukh has been at working across the region for the past four years – three years in the Town of Port Hedland and one year in Karratha. Prior to moving to regional Western Australia, Dr Deshmukh worked at the Paediatric and Neonatal Intensive
Care at Princess Margaret Hospital for eight years. “Dr Deshmukh’s expertise and c o m m i t m e n t is a wonderful contribution to children’s health and wellbeing,” she said. Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia (CME) Chief Executive Reg Howard-Smith said the appointment of Dr Deshmukh was
a great example of government and industry working together to bring dedicated medical professionals to the Pilbara. “The Pilbara Health Initiative plays an important role in helping to attract qualified health professionals, such as Dr Deshmukh, to the region for the benefit of the wider community,” he said.

Learn work-life balance It’s no secret the majority of individuals working in the resource-rich Pilbara region are working long, hard hours. Demand for skilled labour is ever increasing, putting pressure on workers’ relationships and lifestyle. Nationally-acclaimed author and speaker, Jennifer Jefferies, will be in Karratha next week to present two workshops formulated to help individuals create and sustain a healthy work-life balance. The workshops are being delivered as part of a Business Development series, a partnership between the Small Business Centre West Pilbara (SBCWP) and the Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KDCCI). SBCWP Manager Rachel Whiting said the focus for this series had come about in
response to feedback from previous workshops. “We are all feeling the pressure here in the Pilbara and many people are putting their business or career before making time for family, friends and the activities we enjoy,” Ms Whiting said. “These workshops will teach participants how to utilise scheduling and time management tool to avoid feeling burnt out. “These workshops are not just for small business owners, I highly encourage businesses to send their staff to this workshop to promote a healthy work-life balance culture in their organisation. “Providing professional development workshops and training for employees is a key part of attracting and retaining staff, which is more important
in the Pilbara than anywhere else in the country.” The first workshop, The 7 Deadly Sins of Work Life Balance, will be held at Welcome Lotteries House on Tuesday June 19 from 5.00pm. This will be followed by a second workshop on Wednesday, June 20, entitled Staying Sane in the Workplace. This workshop commences at 12.30pm at Welcome Lotteries House. Light refreshments will be provided at each workshop. Tickets are just $25 per workshop for KDCCI members and $30 for non KDCCI members. Registration forms are available on the Small Business Centre website www.sbcwp. com.au.
Deputy’s dispatch 2 Karratha Airport In 2010/11, the Shire of Roebourne extended the airport car park, revising traffic flow and passenger drop-off/collection arrangements. This was necessary to contain the increasing number of vehicles being parked at the airport. Initially, many members of the community were unhappy with the work - particularly the fact that for the first time ever, residents were expected to pay for their parking. Since completion of the project, however, the Shire has had feedback that it is a positive thing to be able to more readily find secure parking. Our town airport sees massive passenger traffic associated with the $90 billion of committed Pilbara construction works. Yet while our passenger numbers have increased from 300,000 to 800,000 in just 4 years, our town’s permanent population has increased by only a few thousand. This puts us in a difficult position - should the 20,000 or so Shire residents be expected to fund the facilities for a million FIFO workers who pass through our airport annually?
We can if we are paid for it. The Shire derives income from the airport, which helps fund our community programmes. This is an aspect of FIFO, which is positive. Your Council and airport team have been closely examining the fees and a new set of rational charges are being developed which will be fair and transparent to all.

Our short-term parking costs are substantially lower than all comparable airports we have researched in Australia. We have calculated that with its new charges, 60% of short-term parking - which is what affects locals most - will be free. Growth is expected to continue and we need to ensure that the fees extracted from FIFO’s and other users are used to continually improve our town and airport.

Local gymnasts prepare for regionals
Round 12
Over 45 local gymnasts, aged 5-15 years, competed in a Mock Competition on Saturday, June 9, at the Karratha Entertainment Centre. It was an opportunity for both gymnasts and coaches, many of them competing for the first time, to practice their routines and competition etiquette in preparation for the upcoming North West Regional Championships. The female gymnasts competed in four events: floor, beam, bar and vault; while Karratha’s only male competitor, Ben Middleton, competed in six events: vault, pommel horse, rings, floor, parallel bars and high bar. While no prizes were awarded at the Mock Competition, everyone had fun and learnt a lot. The North West Regional Championships are to be held in Karratha on July 14 -15. It is anticipated that nearly 80 gymnasts will be competing from clubs in Port Hedland, Broome, Carnarvon and Karratha.
