Have your say On the quality of drinking water in the West Pilbara A draft water plan released for public comment recently by the Department of Water will protect catchments and support the delivery of high-quality drinking water to West Pilbara towns. The Bungaroo Creek Water Reserve drinking water source protection plan: draft for public comment outlines how to protect the quality of the Bungaroo Creek groundwater source. A key recommendation of the plan is a proposal to establish a water reserve for the Bungaroo Creek source area. Bungaroo Creek is the new groundwater source for the West Pilbara Water Supply Scheme that supplies water to the towns of Karratha, Dampier, Roebourne, Cape Lambert and Point Samson. The Bungaroo Creek source includes a borefield, around 35 kilometres
southeast of Pannawonica, owned and operated by Rio Tinto Iron Ore. The source was brought online following an agreement between the state government and Rio Tinto last year to develop water infrastructure for port water use and to supplement the West Pilbara town scheme supply. The plan proposes proclaiming a 46,507-hectare water reserve to protect the Bungaroo Creek borefield and the Bungaroo and Jimmawurrada Creek catchment areas, which recharge the Bungaroo Creek borefield during creek flows. The plan is open for public comment until July 13, 2012. To view the plan, go to the Department of Water website: www.water. wa.gov.au. Select Have your say > open for public comment.

The word getting about of late is quite a lot of us are noticing an invasion of rats into our homes and living areas. Now, while it’s not unusual to have an invasion of mice at different times of the year, it is another thing to have the quantity of rats around that I hear people talking about. Even people in homes without animals have sighted rats on their premises. Now, these critters are not to be mistaken for our native rats, which are quite different to the introduced species. The two ‘feral’ rats are the black rat (rattus rattus or ships rat) and the brown rat (rattus norvegicus or sewer rat). From my research, the brown rat hasn’t spread far from the major coastal cities and ports and is not a climber tending to live on ground level or below. The black rat that is more widespread. The rattus rattus is a very good climber and has no qualms about setting up house in your barbecue, getting into your rolled up swag or the roof of your house, sounding a much larger creatures than they are; while rampaging around in the roof during the night, looking at you through the kitchen window while scurrying across the brick windowsill, climbing up the wall of the house while you’re sitting on your patio watching it, or getting into the boat to chew and gnaw on cabling, (any of this sound familiar?), they are also very good swimmers. I didn’t realise my rat problem was as bad as it was till I found a few common areas where their habitation was obvious. The cache of foodstuffs and
the size of the droppings left behind made me realise I was dealing with more than one and it certainly wasn’t mice. Around this time during general conversation with others it was apparent I was not the only one with a rat problem. Thankfully mine had not entered the house. While contemplating the extermination program, my husband voiced his concerns that the offenders could be native rats and how did I know the difference. The rats I had seen were quite large, and while brown (not black) had long tails. Anyone familiar with our native rats and mice will be aware that the tail of the natives is the same length as the body or shorter, except in the case of the kangaroo and tree rats and hopping mice.In the native animals, the tail is quite fat as well. Our native rats don’t grow to the size of the black or brown rat which can reach upwards of 30cm. As I set out the first round of baits, hubby was still not convinced they weren’t natives that I was about to exterminate. It was only when we started finding the bodies that I was able to show him the difference. Using a tape measure the body was 9cm long and the tail was 15cm long and it looked just like the pet rat we had a few years ago, but a different colour. He was still dubious as they had a pale underside and and it was only after I got on the net and showed him many images of native rodents that he conceded I was right in my observation and that the ones I had killed were indeed the ones whose ancestors had ‘ jumped ship’.

Rio Tinto to expand Pilbara operations Rio Tinto has committed $3.64 billion to expanding its massive iron ore operations in Western Australia’s Pilbara region.
chief executive Tom Albanese said in a statement.
The world’s second largest iron ore producer said mining in the Pilbara presented long-term growth prospects.
“Today’s announcement is in line with our long-held strategy of investing in and operating longlife, low-cost, tier one assets, and consistent with our view of the economic outlook.”
That’s despite recent comments from big mining companies about uncertainty created by falling commodity prices, slowing growth in China and economic woes in Europe and the United States.
Rio will spend $1.97 billion over the next four years on port and rail developments that will expand its production capacity in the Pilbara to 353 million tonnes per annum from 2015.
“We are directing investment to projects that will generate the most attractive returns for shareholders and are resilient under any probable macroeconomic scenario,” Rio Tinto
A further $1.67 billion will be spent to extend the life of the Yandicoogina mine in the Pilbara to 2021 and expand its capacity by six million tonnes per annum.

Be immersed in subsea exhibition The Western Australian Museum’s exhibition Immerse: Exploring the Deep will be on display at the Youth Shed, from June 23. This follows it’s success in Fremantle where it attracted almost 47,000 visitors. Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said the exhibition was particularly relevant to the coastal cities and towns of the State’s North-West, the future of which was so bound up with the natural resources lying off-shore. “Since hard-hat diving was introduced to the pearling industry in the 1860s, WA has been at the forefront of innovation when it comes to developing tools and equipment to work underwater,” Mr Day said. “Immerse was created by the WA Museum and is the first Australian exhibition to publicly show the innovation of the subsea industry, providing visitors with an insight into the activity that happens under the water off the NorthWest coast. “This exhibition is a celebration of WA technology. The WA Museum is proud to bring it to Karratha as part of its commitment to delivering a State-wide museum service.” The Minister said the exhibition would then move to the Perth Royal Show. “For the first time, a WA Museum exhibition will be on display at the Show, giving thousands an insight into the resources industry, the technology that facilitates it and also the work of the museum,” he said. “It is through our partnership with the Society for Underwater Technology and sponsors, particularly Woodside, that we have been able to bring the exhibition to these two venues.” Immerse: Exploring the Deep will be at The Youth Shed from June 23 – July 22 and at the North West Shelf Visitors Centre from June 25-July 20. For more information http://www. museum.wa.gov.au/immerse
“A few years ago these projects were just concepts on paper, this is now the fourth major community infrastructure project delivered in the last six months following the opening of the Pam Buchanan Family Centre, The Youth Shed and the revitalised Cattrall Park earlier this year,” Councillor White-Hartig said. “Our vision was made a reality with support from the State Government’s Royalties for Regions Pilbara Cities and Country Local Government Fund initiatives, the Department of Sport and Recreation’s Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund and the Pilbara Development Commission.” With the redevelopment of the Hunt Way car park now complete
the Frank Butler Community Centre change rooms and facilities are now available for use. “I think anyone who has witnessed this facility taking shape over the last 12 months would agree that it truly delivers as a first-class facility,” Cr White-Hartig said. “This is a centre that I know many sporting clubs, community groups and businesses will gain significant benefit from.” The new addition to Bulgarra Oval boasts indoor and outdoor entertainment areas as well as a fully equipped kitchen and servery making it perfect for community and private functions. The Centre also includes four change rooms, a first aid post and a dedicated umpire’s room.

Soroptimists celebrate 29 years of local service Soroptimists International Karratha and Districts Inc. celebrated 29 years of operation last weekend. In the true spirit of Soroptimism, the occasion was marked by hosting a Sewing for Charity day in which 23 women gathered to sew 110 beanies and a dozen birthing aids, with tea and coffee kindly donated by Dampier Salt Ltd. Fleece beanies were sewn for Perth youth affected by homelessness; red beanies were knitted for Nuns in Bhutan and birthing aids were sewn for midwifery training in Papua New Guinea. ‘On the eve of our 29th anniversary of service, this created a great sense of community, and we should do it more often!’ said Soroptimist Honorary Life Member, Glen Slee. It seems other community members agree and there are already talks of holding another sewing day later this year to sew beanies for the Cancer Foundation. Soroptimists International is a dynamic organisation for today’s professional women, seeking to inspire action and create opportunities to transform the lives of women and girls through a global network of members and international partnerships. Locally, Soroptomists support many initiatives including running the monthly Millars Well Markets and hosting a ‘Speaking Personally’ Dinner at the Karratha International Hotel on the first Wednesday of every month. Anyone who is interested in learning more about the activities of Soroptimists, or interested in attending a future sewing day, is welcomed to register their interest via email to sikarratha@siswp. org. Anyone interested in attending a ‘Speaking Personally’ dinner is asked to contact Soroptimist Arran McOscar, on 0408 938 851 for details.

More power for the Pilbara An additional 20 megawatts (MW) of energy will be installed in the Pilbara by Horizon Power following the State Government’s allocation of $43.5 million in the State Budget. The 20 MW of gas generation to be installed on the North West Interconnected System (NWIS) - the Horizon Power network that provides power to residents and businesses in Port Hedland and Karratha. These measures will increase the total generation capacity on the NWIS to approximately 160 MW, well above the current maximum demand of 122 MW to meet forecasted increased demand from residential and small businesses in the Pilbara. Horizon Power Manager Generation Projects Craig Julian explained that the additional generation is needed to support the expected growth in the Pilbara. “Horizon Power and State Government are committed to ensuring adequate power supplies are available to support this growth and the installation of this additional 20 MW of generation is one way we can achieve that,” Mr Julian said. The new gas turbine will be located adjacent to the ATCO power station in Karratha, which also feeds power into the NWIS for Horizon Power customers. The generator will be operational from early 2012/13 to meet the peak demand experienced at that time of year in the Pilbara.

Art, anatomy and the skull By Tracey Evans We all want to know how people get into such interesting jobs. Last week I met Susan Hayes, a facial anthropologist, who is passing through the Pilbara on a working holiday. Dr Susan Hayes, Honorary Senior Research Fellow, Faculty of Science, University of Wollongong to be exact. Susan told me she was a facial anthropologist, specialising in evidence-based facial approximation (more popularly known as ‘facial reconstruction’), which involves applying what we know about the skull and its soft tissues, to produce the likely facial appearance of a deceased person. Susan said that she would be travelling through the Gascoyne, Pilbara and Kimberley, supported by Inspiring Australia, throughout June and early July. Inspiring Australia is an Australian Government Initiative and is all about taking science out to the wider community. “This all came about a few weeks ago when I was talking with Simon Carroll, the Director of Inspiring Australia in WA, and commented that rather than drive back across the Nullarbor I would be going up over the top, as I’d never driven further than Broome before. “Simon suggested I tried out this experiment with their support,” said Susan. “This trip is an experiment to see whether my area, which is pretty unusual, is interesting to the people of the NorthWest.” “I have had a great response in Geraldton; am going to be speaking and
• Susan Hayes, a facial anthropologist, who is passing through the Pilbara on a working holiday. teaching facial anatomy to artists and the general public up in Broome at the end of the month - and while it was a sudden decision and too short notice this time for the Pilbara - I’ve been meeting people all along the way, both locals and fellow travellers, and been very happy talking about what I do and answering questions about my work,” Susan added. Susan started out in 3D (working in clay over the skull), then moved to 2D, and is now fully computer graphic. Inspiring Australia is an Australian Government Initiative and is all about taking science out to the wider community. “Basically, I think this experiment has already shown that it’s possible to be a travelling scientist; my collection of replica skulls seem to be surviving the trip intact, and I’m already thinking about how it may be possible to revisit the Pilbara. “My work is mostly with international archaeological remains – including people
unearthed in Vanuatu, Argentina and New Zealand, and historical collections in Scotland. “Every skull shows the wear and tear of a life lived, and every skull I research is very clearly the unique remains of a unique individual.” Susan said she felt this most strongly when she was requested by Sydney Homicide to work with the unidentified remains of a young girl found by trail bike riders in 2010 in the notorious Belanglo State Forest. “I know these cases can take time and I have been told that Sydney Homicide have received a number of different leads in response to the work I have done, but so far these have not proven to be successful.“ ‘We still don’t know who she is, and therefore her friends and family have yet to receive closure.”

Judges bring tears of joy to singer By Courtney Bertling The Naidoc Idol auditions proved to be another success with young and old participating in the competition, which was held on Friday, June 15 at the 50 Cent Hall in Roebourne. Now in its second year, Naidoc Idol showcases Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island talent. The first performance of the day was Noretta Wailu, who sang ‘Superwoman’, by Alicia Keys. “I felt that I had to do more for myself and my children,” she said. “I choose to sing Superwoman because I feel like every woman needs to be empowered. “We all struggle – we hear so many stories how the men are the head of the house, but no one looks at the wife, the housemaker. “She can juggle children, while still having a job.” The standout of the day was Roebourne schoolteacher Josie Alec who was brought to tears by the judges’ comments. Josie sang ‘Shine’ by Vanessa Amorossi and said that it has a lot of meaning behind it.
“I just think it has so much meaning for the Aboriginal people to shine, especially after 40 years of tent embassy, fighting for our rights as first nation Australians,” she said. They were tears of joy as Tootsie Daniels said, “If I was to get married I would want you to sing at my wedding” and “you have a voice of an angel”. The talent kept on coming with the younger generation belting out songs and proved that they too can dance like the famous Chris Brown. Liana Wailu, who came to support her daughter Noretta, stayed the whole day with no intention to participate, until the end, when she thought she would give it a go. And it’s good she did, as with her confidence and singing ability, she made it into the finals with the song ‘Redemption song’ by Bob Marley. The finalists, who will go head to head on July 18 are, Josie Alec, Liana Wailu, Wendy Darby, Kobe Farmer, Nelson and Maverick Eaton and Jordan Coppin and Billy Snook. The finalists will perform on stage at the Keith Richards Oval in Karratha, followed by Roebourne’s own Blackstone Ramblers, Casey Donovan and Troy Casser-Daley.

Dampier community says yes to gym By Natalie Gray Thirty plus residents recently attended a community meeting facilitated by the Dampier Community Association to gauge interest and support for a gym in Dampier. For the past 30 years an informal `drop-in’ gym located at the old Hospital building has been well utilised by many in the community, however the facility has now been earmarked for demolition in the near future. Those attending the meeting made it clear that they fully supported the temporary relocation of the gym equipment to another local sports facility for members to utilise until another option can be found. A working party has been established who are keen to garner further support from other interested local community members, as well as source avenues for funding the project. They aim to secure a more suitable long-term arrangement for the gym facility in close consultation with key stakeholders such as the Dampier Community Association, Rio Tinto and the Shire of Roebourne. For further details contact the DCA on dca613@bigpond.net.au.

Children’s author visits library By Courtney Bertling Karratha Community Library played host to children’s author Phil Kettle on Wednesday, June 20. Parents were invited to bring their children to the newly opened, temporary Karratha Community Library. Phil Kettle is a prolific children’s author who specialises in encouraging reluctant readers and as well as visiting the library, he has also stopped in at some of the locals schools. “I have also been visiting some of the schools, sharing tips on writing and talking about books,” he said. “I believe that every student has potential to write, they just have to want to do it.” Phil believes the imagination of the kids has been great, most have
a much wider imagination than ‘city kids’. “In the country, the kids get to experience a lot more, they play outside and have to make their own fun,” he said. His first series, ‘Too Cool’, was incredibly successful and he has since penned the ‘Boyz rule and Girlz Rock’ and ‘Billy Cool’ series. “My ideas come from things that I saw and did as a child,” he said. “As an aging person, to be able to reflect on my childhood is amazing. “But the best feeling you can get is when a parent tells you that my books have gotten their child interested in reading and writing.” For more information about libraries in the Shire of Roebourne visit www.roebourne.wa.gov.au/ libraries

Red-backed Kingfisher
Pilbara to
boost water savings
Pilbara Wildlife Carers Association
The Red-backed Kingfisher (Todiramphus pyrrhopygius) is a species of kingfisher, also known as tree kingfishers. It is a predominantly bluegreen and white bird with a chestnut rump, which is where it gets its name from. It is found across the continent of Australia, mainly inhabiting the drier regions.
It has a black band stretching from the bill, through the eyes and to the ear coverts. The female is duller overall in coloration. The iris is dark brown and the legs and feet dark grey. Immature birds have speckling on their breasts. The call is a descending whistle, with a harsh alarm call given by birds near the nest. The Red-backed Kingfisher is native to most of Australia. It is a summer visitor to the southeast of the country; elsewhere it is resident all year round. It inhabits dry forests, mulga and mallee country, to savannah. It avoids denser forests. During breeding season, birds will move to river courses to make use of the earthy banks to dig nesting burrows. They can be seen sitting on an exposed branch, where they

“They will also enable consumers to make more informed decisions about their water usage. “Investment in these projects further demonstrates the Australian Government’s commitment to securing water supplies for cities and towns in regional Australia.” The expansions were made possible as a result of $1.5 million of savings identified in another regional integrated water efficiency project receiving funding under the National Water Security Plan for Cities and Towns program.

More than $12 million is being provided for these projects through the Australian Government’s Water for the Future initiative.

In 2010/11, the Shire of Roebourne extended the airport car park, revising traffic flow and passenger drop-off/ collection arrangements. This was necessary to contain the increasing number of vehicles being parked at the airport. Initially, many members of the community were unhappy with the work - particularly the fact that for the first time ever, residents were expected to pay for their parking. Since completion of the project, however, the Shire has had feedback that it is a positive thing to be able to more readily find secure parking. Our town airport sees massive passenger traffic associated with the $90 billion of committed Pilbara construction works. Yet while our passenger numbers have increased from 300,000 to 800,000 in just four years, our town’s permanent population has increased by only a few thousand. This puts us in a difficult position - should the 20,000 or so Shire residents be expected to fund the facilities for a million FIFO workers who pass through our airport annually? We can if we are paid for it. The Shire derives income from
the airport which helps fund our community programmes. This is an aspect of FIFO, which is positive. Your Council and airport team have been closely examining the fees and a new set of rational charges are being developed which will be fair and transparent to all. There needs to be a fee to cover the cost of the extensive new works, but most of this will be paid by companies who utilise the long term parking. Our short term parking costs are substantially lower than all comparable airports we have researched in Australia. We have calculated that with its new charges, 60% of short term parking - which is what affects locals most - will be free. Growth is expected to continue and we need to ensure that the fees extracted from FIFO’s and other users are used to continually improve our town and airport. I am keen to hear from you on any of this.

A grant will help Dampier and Pegs Creek Primary Schools to encourage parents’ involvement in their children’s learning. Both schools have been named as recipients in Easternwell’s latest round of community grants, with funds totaling $3490. The funds will be spent on literacy programs aiming to involve parents in their children’s learning. Dampier Primary School will use the funds to purchase literacy backpacks for their students in Kindergarten to Year Two, marking focused effort to improve students’ literacy levels. “The backpacks will contain a range of books and detailed information to parents about how to use the backpacks,” said Deputy Principal Tracey Smyth. “The aim is to provide support to busy parents by showing the range of books children should be exposed to, giving them detailed lists of questioning
techniques and activities to accompany the books,” Tracey said. The moves to boost learning resources are part of a statewide focus on literacy with the Whole School Literacy program. Pegs Creek Primary School’s Whole School Literacy team intends to purchase SMARTKIDS literacy tools and is looking forward to the improvement in resources the Easternwell Community Grants funding will enable. “The school works tirelessly with students and their families to promote literacy success, and these new SMARTKIDS literacy resources will underpin our efforts,” said Pegs Creek Primary School teacher Belinda Jones. The Easternwell Community Grants program provides financial and social assistance to the regions where it has key operations. It aims to strengthen community groups in a number of different areas including education, health, indigenous,
safety, training and youth. Easternwell CEO, Troy Campbell said that they see our grants program as an essential way to ensure we remain connected to the local communities where we work and to support those areas which mean most to them. “The program specifically targets the small, often forgotten organisations that make a real difference to the lives of the people involved. The grants are about recognising the efforts of these groups, which often sit under the radar but have a real genuine need. The Easternwell Community Grants awards $40,000 spread across two rounds assessed bi- annually with the next round opening August 2012. Eligible groups may apply for funding up to $2,000. Criteria and application forms can be found at www.easternwell.com.au/ ourcommunity.

to raise money that is supportive of the nutrition in schools policy and delivers positive messages about the importance of physical activity to a child’s healthy growth and development. “I think it’s wonderful that organisations such as adidas and CUA are making this style of health-based school fundraising possible”, said Brendan Hopp, General Manager of The Fundraising Group. Last year the adidas School Fun-Run program helped to raise in excess of $2.5 million to purchase computers, books, sporting equipment and other school resources. The program’s major partner CUA also showed further support for schools by donating an extra $45,000 in school grants through the Community Care
program linked with the School FunRun. Jeff Emmel, National Executive Director of the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation said, “The school based event was an ideal way to promote health messages to the community while raising money for the school and ACHPER was delighted to support it. The important thing is that the event allows schools to be flexible in terms of when and how they become involved. It encourages participation and basically students can run, walk or wheelchair the distance”. All schools are invited to participate in the adidas School Fun-Run by visiting www.schoolfunrun.com.au

Strategic Community Plan 2012-2022
Do you desire to study the arts…? Do you aspire to create art….?
SHIRE OF ROEBOURNE’S NEW our vision STRATEGIC COMMUNITY PLAN 2012-2022 for the future The Strategic Community Plan 2012–2022 represents our new approach to planning for the Shire of Roebourne’s future. It builds on our past strategic planning work, addresses the challenges we face and sets out what actions we will take in the next 10 years to work towards achieving the community’s vision. This plan has been developed through engaging our communities using a number of strategies including community surveys, community forums and community feedback. The new Strategic Community Plan presents our community’s vision for the future and states the actions we need to take to achieve our vision. The new plan is also supported by our financial management, asset planning and workforce commitment. The Strategic Community Plan 2012–2022 is now available to the community for comments and feedback. Copies of the Strategic Community Plan 2012– 2022 are available for viewing at all public libraries in the Shire and at the Shire of Roebourne Administration Office, Welcome Road, Karratha. The plan is also available for download online at www.roebourne.wa.gov.au.

Greg says, “Opportunities will be available for students to amalgamate some really special and exciting extra curricular activities within our community.” In Years 8 and 9, students will have the opportunity to excel in all art forms. In Year 10, they will be able to specialise in their chosen art discipline, which will lead to Senior School pathways and opening up post school opportunities including university, traineeships and employment. Entry to the program is through a rigorous application process. Twenty-five places are available in each year group. Successful students will be required to meet a high standard of commitment and achievement to maintain their place in the program. Parents and students wishing to find out more about the program are invited to the Year 8, 2013 Parents and Student Information Evening on 19 June 2012 at Karratha SHS Senior Campus at 6.00pm.

If the answer is YES then the place for you is in the Excellence in The Arts program at Karratha SHS. Karratha SHS are introducing a new Excellence in Arts Program from the start of 2013. The program will allow students to immerse themselves in five different Art forms and have the opportunity to study the Arts at a higher dimension through the new Excellence in Arts Program. A unique program, not offered at any other school in the Shire of Roebourne, it will begin in 2013 with Year 8 and 9 students and by 2016 the program will cater for Year 8 to 12. Principal Greg Kelly said, “The Excellence in Arts Program will immerse students in an arts culture and environment that is about learning based on contemporary arts practice of working in multiple art forms. The program will blend the five Arts forms of Dance, Drama, Media, Musical Theatre and Visual Arts and will allow students the opportunity to develop to new levels of excellence across a range of areas within the Arts.” The program will provide ongoing learning experiences for students who want to enrich their educational opportunities through The Arts as well as develop creative and critical thinking. Students in the Excellence in Arts Program will be involved in some extraordinary projects that link all years of school and the broader community.

interview
Over the years, Mind Electric has remixed big names like Kaskade, Deadmau5, Ian Carey with Snoop Dog, The Potbelleezz, TV Rock, Evermore and many more. He has also worked with world-renowned vocalist Max ‘C. His remixes (Approaching 40) have played a vital part of his success with his standout mixes of ‘To the Beat of the Drum’ (Tribal Kings), ‘Right in the Night’ (Sgt Slick) and ‘She Got it’ (Vandalism & Angger Dimas) getting hammered by the likes of superstars Kaskade, Laidback Luke and Chris Lake in clubs worldwide and to festival crowds of 80,000 plus! The best thing about being a DJ, Kristian said would be the free drinks and travelling to amazing places. “This year I’ve travelled to Bali three times, America, Europe and around Australia - I consider myself very lucky,” he said. Although travelling all around the world, Kristian has not encountered any weird experiences, so maybe his trip to Karratha and Port Hedland will change that. “I am Mr Boring on that one,” he laughed. “I really can’t think of anything strange to date - hopefully something freaky happens at my up and coming gig…hint hint.” His trip to the Pilbara will not be his first time; locals will remember this DJ’s face and tunes as he has performed a number of times in the region over the last 18 months. “I really look forward to the party crowds, it’s all about the crowd in these towns,” he said. “I find the regional crowds are much more appreciative than the spoiled city slickers. “They party hard and as long as the music has tons of energy an awesome night is guaranteed.” Mind Electric will be performing at the Evolution Nightclub in Karratha on Friday, June 29 with support from DJ’s Damian John, Panda, Flowers and Hanky. The next night, Saturday, June 30, he will be performing at The Pier Hotel with support from DJ’s Damian John and Dirty Bootz. Entry costs $25 each, at the door.

David Quirk, a member of the roadshow for the WA leg, said that the Thursday night gig was one of the best they’d had on the whole tour. “Normally an outdoor gig, you don’t get to do it very often. “They can be great, but we had one in Kununurra and that was excellent too, but this was actually better again. “The crowd was so up for it, I hope they are as good tonight. “I reckon it could be a bit rowdy being Friday. “But last night was excellent and it was fun!” David said. David came out carrying a stubby and his style of chatting to the crowd worked well. Joel Creasy from Perth, warmed up the show and introduced each act. Joel was a lot of fun and anyone who dared cross in front of the stage when Joel was front and centre, quickly became his subject. He has a self-deprecating humour and a knack for including a local flavor

to his fast-paced bitchy act. Joel kept the night going with an attack on football players, Armadale and men. Harley Breen raised quite a few laughs with his hilarious stories about his wife – not only after a night out with the girls, but also the birth of their baby. Roger David and Fletcher Jones (I had to wonder whether a Karratha crowd knew these men’s clothing stores) made up Smart Casual. Their act, Same Mother, Different Fathers was a little slow in parts but when the bearded Fletcher Jones went down to the audience and showed them what he was made of, the crowd erupted. New York comedienne, Marina Franklin had a laid-back style that she compared with her Afro-American sisters, before regaling us with stories of little people (you can still tell these stories in Australia), and her lovers. When audience members were asked what they thought of the night the comments were, “Awesome, fantastic” and “Very, very good.” The Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow continued on to Port Hedland and is in Perth on June 23 and 24.
Over two nights the gags flew thick and fast to an appreciative audience under the stars at the Walkington Theatre.

We have lived the dream and have just completed our trip around Australia in our 2010 Ultima 27RK 5th wheeler.
Our travels in our rig have been recorded on our blog www.soulfoodtraveller.com We reluctantly offer our beautiful Ultima Luxury rig for sale; as it is time to settle down. Our Ultima which is in immaculate condition was purchased in September 2010 from Cameron’s Caravans in Albany. Only 18 months old, still covered by 18 months Factory warranty. See in the Cameron’s site www.cameroncaravans.com.au It is state-of-the-art, eco-friendly, of “Compositech” non wood construction, a super light fifth wheeler which was especially built in the USA to Australian standards specifically designed and suited to a 3.0 liter Turbo Diesel Ute. Yes a 3 litre Turbo Diesel, the Utima has a dry curb weight of only 2790 Kgs. Especially made for use with Nissan Navara, 4x4 3.0, Mazda BT 50, Holden Colorado, Isuzu D Max. We are using a Twin Cab 4x4 2006 Nissan Navara STR 3.0Di with enough power and good economical results of around 6.5km per litre at around 90km/Hr. Our Navara has comfortably taken the Ultima over Australia’s highest mountain ranges such as The Grampians, and Bell Bird Mountain Victoria , Mount Ousley in New South Wales, The Daintree and the Glasshouse Mountains and the Atherton Table lands and Daintree forests in Queensland. It’s travelled through Western Australia from Esperance to the Pilbara into the Kimberleys to Lake Argyle the northern Territory to Darwin the York peninsula and up to Cooktown, then over to Karumba in the Gulf of Carpentaria, and through the Centre to the Alice and Uhluru, down through into South Australia. Over the Nullarbor to Esperance in WA where the rig is situated. The Ultima includes almost every option imaginable, such as: a pop-up 32” LED TV in lounge, separate TV in bedroom. Water filtration and pump, Fresh water and grey and black water tanks, giant slide-out, club lounge, leather type interior. Dometic Marine full flush porcelain toilet in its own room, Windgard TV antenna, front electric stabilizers, electric Domestic awning, and slide topper, queen bed, a second big double bed under lounge, Domestic auto AGA 186 Liter 2-door fridge/freezer, SMEV four burner/griller/ oven (Mod. 401 AGA), Dometic B3300 240V ducted hot & cold air conditioner. Suburban 240V/LPG AGA hot water heater, alloy wheels, bathroom with separate shower, Jensen DVD/CD surround sound entertainment pack, Multistar built in microwave oven full sized LG front load washer/drier. Rig fitted with 2 Huge 90amp/Hr sealed batteries with back up solar power panel for free camping. If you would like more information on this unique opportunity well below replacement costs contact us on our mobile 0459216866 or by email druce@space.net.au

Students learn to run fast – and so can you! By Courtney Bertling When you want to run fast, who do you go to? All the top AFL and NRL players will tell you the same person - Lindsay Bunn, better known as ‘Coach’. Mr Bunn is an elite sprint coach, who trains people to run, and how to do it fast. Students at St Paul’s Primary School were given the opportunity to learn some tips from the coach, as well as two of his runners, Mangar Chuot and Richard Akera. The two runners, originally from South Sudan, moved to Perth in 2004. Through Mangar’s sister, Susan, they met Bunn, who improved their running skills and are now ranked in the top two in different distances. Chuot just missed out on competing in the 2012 Olympics after an injury
occurred in February this year. He is currently ranked number two in WA in the 100m and 200m sprints. Akera, only 19-years-old, currently ranked second fastest 400m sprint runner in WA, dreams to one day represent Australia. “They weren’t always that fast at running,” Bunn said. “They worked hard and believed in themselves.” Bunn said it is just simple activities that you do daily which improve your running. “These tips that I show people, it is not rocket science, they just have to work on it,” he said. “The harder you work, the better you will become. “And never tell anyone that they can’t do it, because people will surprise you.”
And don’t let the country people fool you, Bunn told the students. “Just because people live remotely, doesn’t mean that you can’t be successful,” he said. Bunn taught the students a number of tips to fast running, including the power they put into the ground and that fast arms equal fast running. “The key to running fast is fast arms, your legs will follow,” he said. Sprint runner, Akera, said that there is a lot of talent in the town. “We come here to give country kids an opportunity to learn running techniques,” he said. “But talent is one thing, it only makes up 20%, the rest of hard work, training and passion.” Bunn, Akera and Chuot will be at the Bulgarra Oval on Monday, June 25 at 4pm for a training session of running techniques.
Steph’s second great catch By Elise Batchelor Ernest Hemmingway’s novel, “The old man and the sea”, is possibly the most famous literary take on sitting around waiting for a darn fish. If you don’t count “Moby Dick”, that is. Then again, except for a couple of minority countries, none of us are actually into catching whales, so other big fish do quite nicely, thank you very much. Winter weather provides many opportunities for people to get out on local waters and fish and such was the case when Pilbara resident Steph reeled in this beautiful blue bone when camping last weekend down at Point Samson. “Pretty to look at and extremely delicious!” Steph said. “I needed a hand to reel it in.” According to partner Dane Johnson, “She caught it on Tuesday June 12 at the end of the boat ramp,” as one does.
“They key to running fast is fast arms, your legs will follow.”
“It’s a tusky if you’re a Queenslander,” he said. Mr Johnson, a keen fisherman himself, added that with Steph living in Port Hedland and with relatives residing in Karratha, she’s going to have plenty of impressed friends and family when they see this particular catch.
- Elite sprint coach, Lindsay Bunn
The much loved and much in love couple hope to get out for many a fishing trip still. Now it’s up to Dane to cook! “It’s my favourite fish to eat”, Steph said.

NW Netball Championships By Jordan Grigson Karratha took out the Division 1, Masters and 14 & Unders Divisions last weekend when they took to the courts in Broome. The weekend ran smoothly with many thanks going to Jessica Dickson and her team who coordinated the Karratha team. A huge congratulations goes to Jade-Ellen Beattie who took out the most improved umpire award for the 2012 Summit Homes North West Netball Championships. Every year, to commence the weekend’s competition, there is a fashion parade held between all the attending clubs to judge which town is best dressed. This year Karratha took out the parade so a big congratulations to them.
All the girls who attended had an amazing time and are already hanging out for next year’s Championships. This weekend would not have been possible if it weren’t for our current sponsors of the Karratha Netball Association and our Regional Partners so we thank you for your contributions.

What little 3 to 4 year old girl or boy wouldn’t enjoy walking on the moon, ice-skating on a frozen lake, slopping through the mud or visiting everyone in the land of toys? Ovation Performance Company has developed an exciting world of imagination for their youngest dancers and no two classes are the same. The class format remains the same, providing little ones with a strong sense of the familiar, however the themes and content vary every week. “There is obviously a lot of ongoing preparation work involved in these classes, however in my experience you can quickly lose the interest of young dancers if they are continually exposed to the same music and actions week in and week out. “Plus the renewed enthusiasm of our students, every lesson is very rewarding and makes the prop trips to and from the car worthwhile!” says principal teacher Megan Wood-Hill. Our students get to work with props such as wands, ribbons, pom-poms, hoops, dress ups, instruments and a variety of scenarios and music which ignite their imaginations and facilitate the range of early childhood movement we are trying to encourage. “At this stage of development we are most interested in nurturing exploration of their range of movement while activating their minds through imagination and musicality, helping them to gain confidence and provide opportunities for them to express

themselves,” Megan said. We also cover traditional dance steps such as skipping, hopping and galloping, however this is always done with a sense of purpose such as skipping through the forest to find the fairy cave or riding their pony to find the end of the rainbow.”
“The best parts of the classes are always when the children contribute to what comes next, there is nothing more exciting for them than seeing everyone perform their ideas.” If you would like to find out more about these and other classes on offer visit www.ovationperformance.com.au

Focus on fitness, fun and friends By V Swans regional development manager Clint Degebrodt The Pilbara AFL Women continue to attract new members as they are put through their paces each and every Tuesday night at Kevin Richards Memorial Oval from 6pm. The team trains together to prepare for upcoming matches against Tom Price and arch rival Port Hedland, with a strong focus on fun. “It’s heaps of fun but there is a chance to push yourself,” Elysia Canning said. “I’m running around, keeping fit and having a kick with my mates; it’s something different and much easier to chase a ball than go for a road run.” There are all types inside the program with Mums, high school girls, cross over athletes and people just looking to have a crack at the big game. The Pilbara AFL Women is focused on fitness fun and friends and if this is you, feel free to join in on Tuesday evenings.
