It seems that asbestos has reared its head again in the North West with reports of asbestos exposure at three mines. According to reports, asbestos contamination was found at Rio Tinto’s West Angelas and Marandoo mines and also at BHP Billiton’s Jimblebar mine. This asbestos contamination raises concern for the hundreds of mine workers and construction workers who may have been exposed to the deadly dust. Asbestos Diseases Society (ADS) of Australia President, Robert Vojakovic said: “With the Australian Asbestos Management Review to report to the Government this week, the contamination at these three mines is a stark reminder of the prevalence of asbestos at worksites.” Senior Asbestos Lawyer with Slater & Gordon, Simon Millman has echoed the concerns. “As we understand, investigations into these contaminated sites are continuing. “That means that the full extent of the risk to workers working in the vicinity of these contaminated sites is not known.” “The presence of asbestos at these sites may present an imminent risk to the health and safety of these workers.” While it’s certainly not the case that everyone who has been exposed to asbestos develops an asbestos-related illness, it only takes the briefest of exposure to asbestos to develop into a deadly asbestos-related disease,” Mr Millman said. “The employers at these sites must ensure that their workers are kept safe from exposure.” Any mine or construction worker who may have been exposed to asbestos fibres should contact the Asbestos Disease Society, their union or Slater & Gordon. It is important that details about potential exposure are recorded.

Biggest ever budget Roebourne Shire Council has adopted its 2012/13 Budget at a Special Council Meeting held on June 29. Roebourne Shire Council President Fiona White-Hartig said Council had voted to adopt one of its biggest ever budgets. “A total capital expenditure of $71million has been committed to complete a number of important projects including the Karratha Leisure Complex and vital upgrades to water, wastewater and power at Karratha Airport,” Councillor WhiteHartig said. “More
than
$68million
in
operational expenditure has also been allocated in the coming financial year. “This budget is geared towards delivering on these remaining projects and managing the costs associated with their operation. “We must also contend with additional costs of development associated with the resource sector and population growth.” Once finalised, the full budget document will be made available at the Shire’s Administration Office on Welcome Road, Karratha, and at each of the libraries in Dampier, Wickham, Roebourne and Karratha.
Airport parking pass A new paid parking free structure at the Karratha Airport was put in place on July 1. Since the introduction of controlled parking nine months ago at the Karratha Airport, ongoing analysis has revealed approximately two-thirds of those parking in the short-term car park left within 30 minutes. Roebourne Shire Council President Fiona White-Hartig said with this analysis completed it was timely to reset the free parking period and parking charges. “Because the majority of people, who leave so soon after arriving at the Airport, are typically local residents, we have elected to keep the first 30 minutes of short-term parking free-of-charge,” Councillor White-Hartig said. “The Shire’s research shows the new paid parking fee structure, will result in short-term parking fees, which are substantially lower than other comparable airports in Australia.” Cr White-Hartig said revenue collected via paid parking at the Airport was needed to fund both ongoing maintenance and future upgrades to the terminal but those driving the need for these
improvements should pay for the lion’s share of the costs. “Those companies with large fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) workforces operating in the Shire of Roebourne are mainly responsible for a significant increase in passenger numbers in recent years,” she said.
Operation Quartz Over the course of three days from Thursday, June 28 to Saturday 30 June, the Pilbara Traffic Police held Operation Quartz, targeting drink driving. Over 200 cars were stopped with 29 people charged. Of those 29 people, 13 people were charged with drink driving, including a suspended driver with an alcohol reading of 0.254. The driver was arrested, refused bail and the vehicle was impounded. A total of five cars were impounded and five people were charged with no authority to drive. One person was charged with reckless driving and refused to stop. There were also seven other traffic charges and two charges of disorderly conduct. Twenty-five infringements were handed out and eight work orders were given. Pilbara Traffic OIC sergeant Steve Scott said that it is disappointing to see so many people drink driving. “As a result, we will be increasing the frequency of these operations until we see a definitive change in driver behaviour,” he said.

Alcohol free Cheeditha The Cheeditha community in the Shire of Roebourne has requested that they become alcohol free.
One knock. Multiple opportunities.
The Aboriginal community will be declared a restricted area under section 175 of the Liquor Control Act 1988.
“Members of the Cheeditha community wrote to me asking for the introduction of regulations under section 175 of the Act to prohibit alcohol in these communities,” Mr Waldron said. “The community representatives said they considered these restrictions the most effective way of reducing the amount of alcohol-related harm and illhealth in the community. “This was reiterated when I visited the community this week. “It was clear the bans had widespread support, and become a circuit breaker to
• Cheeditha has requested to become alcohol free stop the cycle of alcohol abuse and community harm. “Liquor licensees breaching the restrictions would be liable for a $5,000 fine, while all other people in breach of the restrictions would face a $2,000 fine.”
Don’t miss your chance to develop a grouped housing site at Baynton West in Karratha.
The restrictions give police the power to seize and dispose of opened or unopened liquor containers throughout the community. The proposal to make Cheeditha a restricted area is supported by WA Police and the Shire of Roebourne and it becomes the 16th remote community to have section 175 alcohol bans introduced.
Karratha is growing and so is the demand for high-quality housing. Developers are invited to submit Expressions of Interest for a new multi-dwelling site in Baynton West Estate. With new infrastructure and amenities nearby, this residential community has plenty to offer its residents. A $40million sidings project and Tailings Storage Facility have been delivered by two Pilbara based companies. 100% Traditional Owner Company, Gumala Enterprises Pty Ltd (GEPL) and National Construction Company Georgiou, have continued to cement their relationship after successfully delivering the projects. The joint venture has now successfully secured the next package of works for Tailings Storage Facility 4 a $37million project based in Pannawonica for Rio Tinto Iron Ore. Georgiou’s Chief Executive Officer John Georgiou and Commercial Manager for GEPL, José Castillo congratulated the teams on their strong relationship. “The Gumala Georgiou partnership has been ongoing since 2010 when we came together to provide civil and construction capabilities to the resource
sector,” said Mr Georgiou. “Gumala and Georgiou successfully completed the TSF3 project in June 2012, under budget and injury free. We will continue to demonstrate that we can deliver excellent projects for our clients.” Both Georgiou and GEPL have worked tirelessly during the course of the last two projects to develop their joint venture relationship and ensure both partners gain lasting benefits in the form of increased capability and relationships. José has seen the positive changes over the past couple of years. “Together we have worked to achieve greater understanding of the Gumala Traditional Owners’ culture and their relationship to the land. “Like any joint venture we have used this relationship to build a business plan,

It had to be held during the Pilbara’s magic time; we had to obtain sponsorship; and it had to be far enough into the future to find a time that would fit with John and Abbe Harman. They call it work, but escorting photography and writing enthusiasts to all corners of the world, sounded like a pleasurable pass-time to us. They are good at what they do, and have an easy manner of communicating their passion and teaching their skills. We all agreed they were great, giving individuals time to discuss how they could improve, and generally have a chat.

Reward day at Millars Well Last Monday and Tuesday, students at Millars Well Primary School enjoyed their participation in a rewards day. Clint from Rad Rock Mobile Climbing visited the school and each class from year one through to seven enjoyed an hour of challenging climbing. The Rewards Day is recognition for the positive behaviour of the majority of students for the term. The idea to reward positive behaviour originated in 2011 from a review of the school behaviour management policy, where rather than simply being a punitive policy outlining the consequences for inappropriate behaviour the school
community focused on methods to reward the majority of students who consistently display appropriate behaviour. Thus every semester students must qualify for the rewards program, by not being suspended or having three visits to buddy class. The Rewards program seems to be a big incentive for students and we have seen around a 40% decrease in the number of suspensions and visits to buddy class this semester alone. The Rock Climbing was incredibly well received by the students and the teachers and most challenged themselves to reach the top of the summit!

Strategic Community Plan 2012-2022
SHIRE OF ROEBOURNE’S NEW our vision STRATEGIC COMMUNITY PLAN 2012-2022 for the future The Strategic Community Plan 2012–2022 represents our new approach to planning for the Shire of Roebourne’s future. It builds on our past strategic planning work, addresses the challenges we face and sets out what actions we will take in the next 10 years to work towards achieving the community’s vision. This plan has been developed through engaging our communities using a number of strategies including community surveys, community forums and community feedback. SCHOOL HOLIDAY PROGRAM

Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said the Royalties for Regions program provided a significant and much-needed funding boost for community projects in the Pilbara and had enabled a wider scope of projects to be eligible for funding.
“The Frank Butler Community Centre is one of six strategic community wellbeing projects helping to improve public amenity and lifestyle options for all local residents,” Mr Grylls said. “This centre will not only provide better facilities for the local football and sporting clubs but will also benefit local businesses and community groups.” Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron said sport and recreation and vibrant communities went hand in hand. “Complexes such as this fit comfortably within the Government’s plans to ensure regional West Australians have quality sporting facilities around which communities revolve,” Mr Waldron said. “It’s appropriate that this wonderful new facility should incorporate areas for sport and recreation - it’s the common thread that binds communities together, particularly in the bush.” The Frank Butler Community Centre is now available to hire through the Shire of Roebourne, enquiries can be directed to the Karratha Entertainment Centre.

Roebourne Shire Council Deputy President, Peter Long welcomed the crowd who enjoyed an afternoon of free activities and entertainment. Western Force front rower, Kieran Longbottom made a special appearance, lending a hand to run an interactive activity that proved to be very popular with the kids. Local band, Setting Sons, kept the crowd entertained playing an array of popular songs that had everyone singing along.

De-stress for diabetes There will be a special information and assessment day on July 10 to see if you are at risk of getting diabetes. The Pilbara Health Network and the Wickham Primary Health Care Centre will mark National Diabetes Week (July 8-14) with an open day. The statewide campaign by Diabetes WA, aims to increase awareness of who is at risk of developing diabetes and of the significant effect that stress can have on people with diabetes. Living with diabetes can in itself be a major cause of anxiety for many people. Everybody responds to stress differently and there is both good and bad kinds, which are a part of normal life. This week aims to increase awareness of how stress impacts the effective management of diabetes as well as the steps that people living with diabetes can take to help them to de-stress. “Speak with your GP, Diabetes educator, Indigenous Health Promotion Worker, or other Health Professional; we want you to know that stress is a serious factor when managing diabetes and also to provide advice to those living with the condition on how best to de-stress,” said Judith Dee, Diabetes Educator, Karratha. Managing stress is particularly important for people with diabetes, as during a tough period they may see a change in their blood glucose levels. “Stress management can reduce blood glucose levels and help prevent long-term complications and we want to help people with diabetes living in Karratha, Roebourne, Onslow, Tom Price and Wickham by providing them with techniques on how they can best manage stress in their lives,” said Judith. Mr Bernie Ryder has Type Two diabetes and has experienced stressful situations around normal family life and also stress with ill health including heart disease and a foot injury.
“I have had diabetes for more than ten years and I always wondered why sometimes my blood glucose levels would rise unexpectedly, regardless of how well I thought I was managing myself. “I did not realise that stress could have such a noticeable impact on my blood glucose levels and now take this into consideration when managing my diabetes,” said Bernie from Karratha. Diabetes is Australia’s fastest growing chronic disease with over 100,000 people across Western Australia living with the condition. For more information about stress management and diabetes download the fact sheet available online at www. ndss.com.au/en/Resources/Diabetes-Information-Sheets/. Or call the Diabetes WA Information and Advice Line on 1300 136 588 Diabetes WA is asking people with diabetes to de-stress by: • Recognising they’re stressed and doing something about it • Reminding themselves that they have managed through bad times before • Talking to their family and friends about how they feel • Adding some physical activity to their routine • Spending time having fun, doing things they enjoy • Monitoring their blood glucose levels • Choosing healthy food options • Limiting the amount of alcohol they drink • Stopping smoking • You could have diabetes if you are: • Overweight • Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, Pacific Islander or Maori descent • Know a family member with diabetes • If you have had high blood sugar when you were sick or pregnant.

The Midwives of the Pilbara Stacey Oliver didn’t meet her ‘ultimate’ midwives until after her son was born. It is an unusual story of a surprise birth that ended with midwives Shirley and Kath at Nickol Bay Hospital. Stacey Oliver said that when she gave birth two and a half years ago in her bathroom at home, Shirley and Kath at Nickol Bay Hospital were amazing. “I didn’t know I was pregnant; they where just the ultimate midwives,” she said. “They walked me through everything that had happened and what was going
to happen. “As we came in via ambo with my son in my mums arms and his placenta and imbilical cord in a plastic woolies bag. “They made the situation all the very better. “And two years later when I had my son Nate I requested to have them back when I gave birth to him. “Words cannot describe what I feel for them at all! “So everything that could be ‘high’ risk happened and they coped so well with it. “They are heroes in my life.”

Bright Blue ride red bikes By Tracey Evans When is the Gibb River ride not the Gibb River ride? When it’s 35 policemen riding red -they only come in one colour- ‘posties’ motorbikes over corrugations at 85kmh to raise money for sick children. Sergeants’ Dave Loverock from Dampier Police Station and Rick Bond from Karratha Police Station each rode one of the 35 donated bikes recently – vintage “2008 post office” – from Curtin Air base to Kununurra over four days, to raise a total of $130,000. Dave Loverock said that they needed to ride the bikes pretty fast to get over the corrugations. “You need to go fast, about 85kmh, and you have to follow a line or you can come to grief,” said Dave. “There was no time to look at the scenery because that’s how you run off the road.” Only one bike and two riders didn’t finish the ride that went through Derby, Winjana Gorge, Mt Elizabeth Station and Home Valley station. “The river crossings were pretty interesting. “Only one of the bikes didn’t like the water much and kept stopping in the rivers,” said Dave, adding that they were looking out for croc’s even though they’d been told they were at least 800 metres away. Each night in true fundraising style, they were fined for either being on the Gibb River Road for the first time or if
they had been on it before; or being on their first ride or not; or for falling off – or not. The next ride Sergeant Dave will go on, accompanied by Inspector Kevin Dale from the Pilbara District Office and Police Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan with almost 50 other policemen, is the Wall-to-Wall ride for Remembrance with kid’s fundraising for cancer. A ten-day ride in its third year, the group will travel from Perth to Canberra in September. On ‘real’ motorbikes including Harley Davidson Tourer’s, GSR 1000’s, a 400cc Suzuki dirt bike and with Dave on his Harley Davidson 1993 FXR Superglide, the group of about 50 policemen from all over the state will be staying in motels on the way this time, instead of tents. Their mission is to raise money and allocate 100% of donations towards purchasing specialised medical equipment for both research and direct treatment in helping sick kids throughout WA and beyond on an annual basis. WA Police Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan established Bright Blue, a not-for-profit, public ancillary fund, in March 2011 for this purpose. The formation of Bright Blue was initially inspired by two very special, very sick children, of serving police officers and their brave fight against cancer. Separate fundraising groups under the Bright Blue banner, raised enough to purchase the only 3D Molecular Imaging

Machine in the Southern Hemisphere to aid cancer research. The machine tests laboratory-grown tumours, enabling researchers to determine the best possible treatment for patients with mitigated risk. The Bright Bluey’s Benefit will be holding an evening with local band Snatch, supper supplied from Thai Lanna, a drink on arrival (plus bar sales) and an auction of donated goods. Dampier Community Hall will come alive on July 28 for this fundraising night to help Sergeant Dave to reach his goal of raising $50,000 over three years of his association with Bright Blue. Tickets are available from Kellie Loverock on 0400 621 672. The Bright Blue Benefit appreciates the support they receive from businesses for donations of fuel, bike transport and flights and other needs to make the rides possible; otherwise it is their own money and energy that gets them there! Coppin from the South Hedland Swans, even though his team scored a zero result for the game, the seven goals he kicked against the Karratha Falcons 13.5 (83) still stands. In the Karratha Kats game, the Kats scored 20.9 (129) with B. Francis kicking six goals, to Wickham Wolves 9.13 (67). Port Hedland Rovers booted a
whopping 28.20 (188) to trounce the Dampier Sharks 2.4 (16), with S. Hart getting 12 goals for the Rovers. In the reserves games, an unregistered player for the Wickham Wolves caused the team to receive a zero scoreline, with Karratha Kats kicking 20.14 (134). The Karratha Falcons v South Hedland Swans reserves game saw the Falcons come out winners 13.12 (90) to 8.7 (55). The Wickham Wasps travelled to Port Hedland for a top of the table clash against the Hawks. What was meant to be a close encounter between the two undefeated sides of the competition turned out to be a one sided affair with the Hawks claiming premiership favouritism with a dominant performance. The Wasps started off well, scoring first off a kick from Cody Felton, which the Hawks failed to clean up. The Hawks hit back quickly with a number of tries of their own and from then on took control of the match. Lead by a potent hooker and half combination the Hawks scored at will out wide and by half time were ahead by 28 to 6. The second half followed the same script as the first with the Hawks out classing an undermanned Wasp’s outfit. To the Wasps credit, they fought all the way to the end, managing to cross for another couple of tries. This was to no avail as the Hawks went on to win the game very comfortably by 50 points, 66 – 16. Hawks had a number of players that played well but none more so than Hooker, Daniel Payne who was outstanding. In the other game of the round, a small
crowd showed at Millars Well oval to watch the Roosters host Broncos in what turned out to be a nail biter finish. The Broncos put first points on the board with two good tries as a result of some hard running forwards. After a slow start, the Roosters soon found their rhythm crossing the try line and taking the lead at the end of the first half. The second half started much the same as the first with the lead changing many times. Roosters ran in two consecutive tries to put them in front 34-30. With a minute and a half to go, handling errors saw the Roosters turn the ball over on their try line, giving the Broncos one more chance to even the score with a conversion to win. Some scrambling defence saw the Roosters hold out the Broncos attack for a hard fought win 34-30. Rooster’s pair Hoani Paewai and Jimmy Kadar-mia had strong games, while Jarrod Wehi impressed for the Broncos. Next week’s games see the Wasps take on the Karratha Storm in Karratha and the Karratha Broncos travel to Port Hedland to take on the Ladder leaders, the Port Hedland Hawks. Both games kick off at 7:30pm Saturday night.

The Wickham, Roebourne and Point Samson Motocross Club (WRAPS) will hold their third Pindan Dash on Sunday, July 15. Last year over 60 riders went down to the Wickham Motocross track – from as young as four years old and up to that child’s grandfather who was 56-years-old. The one to look out for will be the winner of two years running and Port Hedland rider, Jono Squires, who said last year that he already planned to take out first place again this year. • 2011 Pindan Dash - Jono Squires in first, WRAPS president Jake Watling in second and Tyson Lind in third Barry Branch spoke of Jono as a great rider and fundraiser for the year and we thinks it is a bit nostalgic when incorporate our sponsors and you consider that his father raced give them as much publicity as on this very same track back in we can.” the 70’s.
